Full textThis thesis was developed between 05/2014 and 03/2017 together with Umicore AG & Co. KG and is related to the BMWi project 'NeoKarII' with the search for novel, oxidic electrode materials for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEM-FC). In this work, various oxidic materials were prepared by sol-gel and impregnation processes and their suitability for a fuel cell application was tested. In addition to comprehensive X-ray diffraction examinations of the materials systems IrO2-TiO2, IrO2-SnO2 and Cr2O3-TiO2, the composition dependence of electrical conductivity is also shown. For this purpose, a new measurement setup with a 2-point resistance measurement method was developed and brought into services. The semi-automatic setup allows a temperature- and pressure-programmed measurement of powdered materials.

Full textThe deposition of metastable layers by means of heteroepitaxy is gaining more and more in importance in current solid state physics, especially if it is possible to deposit layers with rather different lattice parameters in perfect quality, necessary for the fabrication of electronic devices and semiconductor technology. The use of such layer systems enables to controlling specific material properties, for example the mobility of charge carriers and the energy gap. Within the framework of this work the early stages of the relaxation of very thin strained silicon-germanium layers deposited onto (001)silicon substrates were investigated. Such metastable layers create so-called misfit dislocations at annealing. The formation of dislocations in nearly perfect materials as silicon in macroscopic extension presumes a nucleation process and the propagation by means of gliding and/or climbing of the threading segments. These processes were investigated systematically at silicon-germanium-films on silicon substrates as a modelsystem. Very low densities of dislocations were investigated by in-situ and ex-situ X-ray topography as well as high resolution X-ray diffractometry. Plane-view transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy complemented the experiments in order to study the behavior at the dislocation crossings at smaller length scale. Dislocation glide rates were measured at different concentrations of impurities (e.g. carbon) in the sample and for different growth techniques. There was no significant influence of the epitaxial method on the glide velocities but a very low amount of oxygen decreases the the velocity effectively. A low density of carbon (0,1%) wich occcupy silicon or germanium lattice sites had no significant influence on the propagation of dislocations. The process of nucleation is dominated by heterogeneous nucleation as was verified at a large number of samples and varies in detail for different epitaxial depostion methods. The activity of single nucleation centers is rather different and can interpreted with a "spectrum" of centers of different strength. A strong center can induce as many as 100 dislocations. These dislocations form bunches of dislocations as was observed with X-ray topography. The centers are sequentially activated. This was demonstrated at samples where a pretreatment with an excimer laser "activated" weak centers thereby inducing a comparatively homogeneous distribution of dislocations. By means of in-situ synchrotron radiation experiments the prozesses of propagation, blocking and crossslip could be observed for the first time in large areas of samples. The double crystal X-ray topography is a suitable method to observe these processes in comparatively large samples with a very low degree of relaxation.

Full textBecause of their relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of about 1·10-6 K-1, LAS-type glass-ceramics consisting mainly of keatite solid solution (s.s.) are much more sensitive to fracture due to thermal shock than glass-ceramics consisting mainly of high-quartz s.s., the CTE of which is about 10 times smaller. Nevertheless, it was shown that with certain parameters a glass-ceramic consisting of keatite s.s. can be produced to satisfy the criteria for thermal shock resistance. In this work the thermal shock behaviour (TUF) in a keatite s.s. glass-ceramic was investigated and optimised. A basic thermal shock resistance (“Basic-TUF”) is caused by the parameters a, E and n which can be increased through suitable ceramisation parameters. This additional thermal shock resistance can be attributed to a surface layer of approximately 100 µm thickness. The ceramisation process can induce compressive stresses of up to 10 MPa, which increase consequently the TUF. These small stresses were semi-quantitatively characterised by the use of Vickers indentation and described by a model, based on the theory of fracture toughness. The stresses influence the crack growth of the induced cracks. The length of these Vickers cracks can be correlated to the stresses and the TUF. As a consequence the TUF can be identified as a surface near property. It is also possible to distinguish between samples with high and low TUF-values

Full textThe coupling of collective excitations was studied in monolayer and bilayer quasi two-dimensional electron systems. Different modulation-doped samples based on GaAs were prepared with gate electrode and grating coupler in order to detect the plasmon excitations at variable electron densities by means of far-infrared spectroscopy. The experimental data were analyzed by calculating self-consistently the electronic ground state, the plasmon energies, and the optical absorption of the electron gas. To determine the optical absorption, based on existing concepts an own formalism in the framework of the current-response scheme was developed. By this, the existence of optical and acoustic intersubband modes in a bilayer system could be shown for the first time, and a detailled analysis of the coupling of intersubband plasmons to optical phonons and to radiative grating modes in the range of the Rayleigh anomaly was possible

Full textThis thesis was developed between 12/2014 and 02/2018 in an extended framework of BMWi project „NeoKarII “ in cooperation with Umicore AG & Co. KG. The project was concerned with the search for novel oxidic electrode materials for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEM-FC). In this work we prepared niobium- and tantalum-doped tin oxides with different doping levels (mainly 1 to 10 %) by sol-gel synthesis, impregnation and co-precipitation. For co-precipitation we developed and built a MicroJet reactor plant. We analysed the materials by X-ray diffraction and tested them for suitability for use as catalyst support material in PEM-FC. Target values were BET surface area and specific conductivity, which was determined using a specially developed conductivity measurement setup.:1 Einleitung 1.1 Brennstoffzellen 1.2 Methoden zur Synthese der Mischoxide 1.3 Eigenschaften von Zinnoxiden 1.4 Zielsetzung 2 Ergebnisse und Diskussion 2.1 Synthesen und Beobachtungen 2.2 Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse 2.3 Pulver-Röntgendiffraktometrie 2.4 BET-Oberfläche 2.5 Leitfähigkeit 2.6 Röntgenphotoelektronenspektroskopie 3 Experimenteller Teil 3.1 Synthesen 3.2 Analytische Methoden 4 Zusammenfassung und Ausblick 4.1 Zusammenfassung 4.2 Ausblick 5 Anhang
