AbstractObjectives:This paper reports five cases of aberrant cochlear implant electrode array insertion into the vestibular labyrinth. A review of the literature was conducted in order to clarify reasonable preventive and detection strategies and endorse the routine use of intra-operative plain skull X-ray.Methods:The study entailed a clinical case series and literature review. The setting was a tertiary academic referral centre. The following data were evaluated: pre-operative temporal bone computed tomography, operative reports, intra-operative imaging, neural response telemetry/imaging and

Introduction: To review the indications and necessary steps for successful irido-zonulo-hyaloidectomy in persistent aqueous misdirection. Study design/materials and methods: A 60-year-old woman was referred for persistent aqueous misdirection despite aggressive medical management. Her intraocular pressure would elevate with discontinuation of cycloplegics and her lens shifted anteriorly. She underwent standard 25g pars plana vitrectomy with irido-zonulo-hyaloidectomy. Results: The aqueous misdirection resolved with successful creation of the irido-zonulo-hyaloidectomy with noticeable deepening

Abstract:
Aqueous misdirection syndrome is a rare, incompletely understood, sight-threatening eye condition that is difficult to diagnose and treat. We present a case of simultaneous bilateral aqueous misdirection following the administration of certolizumab in a 41-year-old women with rheumatoid arthritis and no known risk factors. To our knowledge, aqueous misdirection has not previously been associated with the use of tumour necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors.

Abstract:
Misdirection of regenerating axons is one of the factors that can explain the limited results often found after nerve injury and repair. In the repair of mixed nerves innervating different distal targets (skin and muscle), misdirection may, for example, lead to motor axons projecting toward skin, and vice versa—that is, sensory axons projecting toward muscle. In the repair of motor nerves innervating different distal targets, misdirection may result in reinnervation of the wrong target muscle, which might function antagonistically. In sensory nerve repair, misdirection might give an increased

A 61 year old female with no prior ocular history developed progressive anterior chamber shallowing following uncomplicated phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. This shallowing rapidly accelerated after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, and led to a significant myopic shift. Ultrasound biomicroscopy imaging demonstrated anterior displacement of the irido-lenticular diaphragm and anterior rotation of ciliary processes confirming a diagnosis of aqueous misdirection. One year after Nd:YAG anterior hyaloidotomy and medical therapy, her anterior chamber deepened and myopic shift resolved.

In their quest for creating magical experiences, magicians rely on a host of psychological factors. Here, we compare tricks based on attentional misdirection with tricks based on amodal completion. Based on the notion that amodal completion is a cognitively impenetrable perceptual phenomenon, we predicted that the tricks based on this perceptual effect should—to a much larger extent than tricks based on attentional misdirection—retain their deceptive power when the tricks are repeated. Object An experiment was performed to study the limits of the ability of screws designed to center themselves in the pedicle during insertion, and to study whether straight-ahead versus inward screw insertion trajectories differ in their resistance to pullout. Methods Forty-nine human cadaveric lumbar vertebrae were studied. Pedicle screws were inserted in trajectories starting 0°, 10°, 20°, or 30° from the optimal trajectory, either medially or laterally misdirected. The surgeon then inserted the screw with forward thrust but without resisting the screw's tendency to reorient its own trajecto

Discourses on men’s violence against women have long been associated with linguistic avoidance and communicative strategies that obscure the responsibility of male perpetrators. Linguistic avoidance does not only obfuscate the responsibility of male perpetrators; such strategies also hide the norms and attitudes that underpin much of men’s violence against women. Such techniques represent a form of misdirection: communicative strategies that draw attention away from the true causes or nature of an issue.
