Full textThe work of a. S. Byatt (born 1938) has been surprisingly neglected by many studies of the contemporary british novel. This thesis constitutes the first full-length study of her fiction. I have concentrated on the self- reflexive processes used by byatt, particularly tne intertextual and the intratextual, which are examined in order to establish a poetics of byatt's work, and to situate this in the postmodern ethic and esthetic. Byatt multiplies diegetic levels, includes the mise en abyme of the writing character, uses a wide range of inserted texts, real and fictional, and invents new hybrid forms, making a particular feature of brilliant neo- victorian pastiche in possession her most acclaimed work. The thesis falls into 3 parts, corresponding approximately to what have termed (1) canonic intertextuality, (2) forms of intertextuality other than the canonic (such as reference to the fairy tale or to the painting, which i have united by analysing their emblematic aspects in the novel), and (3) the degree of innovation in the deployment of the text in the text in byatt's most recent novel, babel tower. The structure of the thesis is thus roughly chronological, and follows the natural evolution of byatt's work. In each chapter i have begun at the hermeneutic level, establishing the relationship between the various levels of the text in order to elucidate the project of the work as a whole. This basic analysis is then rendered more complex and is completed by the study of what i have termed the 'double form', which consists of modes such as irony and parody, as well as rhetorical tropes such as metaphor and allegory, or - representing amn innovation - intersemiotic illustration

Full textThis work of comparative literature explores the profusion of novelistic forms based on the representation of embedded writer characters during the modernist period. This structure of fictionalized literary enunciation is employed on a large scale by authors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in Western Europe. We recognise these occurrences as “ventriloquial fictions”, following Max Saunders’s work. Our hypothesis considers this specific kind of narration as a particularly active paradigm of the modernist formal revival. It allows the writers to deconstruct narrative mediation devices, and to set up reflexive matrices for a renewal of the representation of subjectivity. Our comparative study of the subject is set through a novelistic corpus from five different linguistic areas (France, England, Spain, Portugal and Italy), gathered around the period which is described as “Early Modernism” by the English-language critical tradition. This body of texts is composed of Luigi Pirandello’s Il fu Mattia Pascal (1904), Alfred Jarry’s Gestes et opinions du docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien (1911), Mário de Sá-Carneiro’s A confissão de Lúcio (1914), Miguel de Unamuno’s Niebla (1914) and Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Soldier (1915). The first stage of our study is diachronic. It makes use of literary history in order to draw the ways of sedimentation of fictional biographical writing within European literature. We then apply a narratological approach for enlightening the issue. It allows to define, in a synchronic way, the mechanisms used for the constitution of the modernist ventriloquial reflexivity. The third and last part of this work offers to outline concrete elements of novelistic poetics through three scales of analysis, articulated around the possible worlds theories. The ventriloquial fictions thus appear as an exemplary modality of the modernist renegotiation of the hermeneutic categories at the beginning of the twentieth century

Full textAn artistic and literary procedure and, at the same time, an intellectual reflexion, mise en abyme is one of the favorite strategies of creation of the novelist U. Eco. Certain authors have used this technique just to create "simple" games of mirrors (such as the French writers called "Nouveaux Romanciers"). In the case of Umberto Eco, mise en abyme is destined to emphasize both the intelligibility of his work, as well as its being structured in multiple layers of narrativity. We reckon that this is the recursive principle, serving at the generating of fractal shapes and characters: this is therefore the reasoning laying at the foundation of creating a fictional universe self-reflective par excellence. If we want a very concise (but essential) representation, we will say that the mise en abyme is that device consisting of the insertion of one or many more stories into The Story, which, by reproducing the characteristics of the latter, provides us with an explanation and will shed light on the theme / themes of the work

Full textThis PHD thesis approaches Perec’s work through the prism of the mise en abyme, an a priori overused process of 20th century literature, whose narrative efficiency seems nevertheless to have attracted a writer set on basing his writing in a system and maintaining the illusory pleasure of fiction. Due to the aporia of a pure appearance of the process, the area of the study is broadened to the more wide et #8208;ranging movements it implies: inclusion and repetition. These two movements, which initiate a tension between the whole and its parts, can also be used to describe Perec’s gesture of writing, animated by the wish to be part of the world. A specific narrative horizon emerges. On the one hand, the mise en abyme is considered in its closeness to the metatextual dimension of the narratives, whose effects are often metaleptical. On the other hand, because of the process’ figurability, which enables it to act as subject as well as objet of a reflection, Perec’s writing can be apprehended in its plasticity. Finally, this narrative horizon is confronted with the idea that Perec voices about a possible “narratheme”, a minimal narrative unit that would contain the seeds of a fictional world. The local effect of the mise en abyme opens to a more general dynamic of the narratives, between condensation and extension. Narrative or textual thresholds appear, where the inclusion of the author in his writings is negotiated: to narrate and to narrate oneself. Besides the perecquian corpus, the relevance of the enlargement of the mise en abyme is demonstrated in the works of Luxembourgish authors writing in french: Jean Portante and Jean Sorrente
Tsonis, Fotios. "L'ambiguïté salvatrice et destructrice dans l'œuvre romanesque d'André Gide." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUL110.
Full textThe present study aims to demonstrate that the ambiguity which torments the writer's life is both redeeming and destructive, while exploring the impact of the latter on Gide's work and contemporary mores. By studying Gide's writings, we have the impression of attending a dialogue in which opposing opinions confront one another. The ambiguity that emanates from Gide's ambivalent character and enables to reveal his stylistic experiments in the quest for the renewal of classical writing, is also examined herein. In The Immoralist, Gide raises the question of the individual freedom towards the social constraint. Furthermore, Strait Is the Gate is the critique of Protestantism on the one hand, and the critique of virile powerlessness on the other. As for The Vatican Cellars, Catholicism is attacked. Gide likens the religious power to money and theorizes the gratuitous action. In The Pastoral Symphony physical blindness opposes to moral blindness; Christianity and paganism are bound therein and confronted through an impious and aberrant love. The four Socratic dialogues of Corydon follow, a real plea in favor of pederasty. The Counterfeiters are in a way the conclusion of the novel and the sum of his worries, therefore the summit of his ambivalence. An ensemble of themes touching the entirety of social life is also approached, highlighting the falsity of his contemporaries. Finally, Gide opens himself up through If the seed doesn’t die and claims the inscription of his perversion in the normal, while admitting that the autobiographies can only be half-sincere

Full textBy using a minimal language but a very complex narrative structure, Agota Kristof's trilogy stages the mental division which is operated by the historical fracture through war and totalitarism, and all the kinds of exile the entailed. The consequences of this fracture are numerous, and deeply reach the narrator's identity as well as his relation to language and to the world. The fact that a fiction is tied up to another one - and then to a third one - creates some geology, each layer of which gives shape to one aspect of division. Through fiction writing, elements which are part of a very dark and shattered universe can be gathered and structured in their multiples dimensions, where a paradox is taking shape, and which comes from the totalitarian ideology by denying the individual and his world. Through the narrative organisation of the work, the reader actually feels this paradox and is induced to actively penetrate it
