Abstract:
Mishima Yukio's dramatic suicide half a century ago ensured that his name would forever be associated with a certain fanatic imperialism, and largely fulfilled his own wish that he would die as a military man. And yet, he was until the end foremost a literary artist, concerned with the critical reception of his written works and preoccupied with his lasting reputation as an author. This paper examines Mishima’s portrayal of the celebrity writer, as well as the potentials and limitations of literature as presented in his oft-neglected modern noh play Genji kuyō (Devotional offering for Genji, 1962). It positions the play within the long history of prayers for Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji, ca. 1008) that began in the twelfth century in response to the perceived ambiguous morality of the author Murasaki Shikibu (d. ca. 1014). Mishima's Genji kuyō provides a pointed criticism of readers, as well as anxieties regarding a writer's life and literary recognition. Though Mishima himself famously disowned it after its initial publication, Genji kuyō offers critical insights regarding the writing and reading of literature.

Abstract:
In the social study, there is a concept about strong desire to be recognized by others named thumos. Mishima as a Japanese ultranasionalist have a value about guarding the traditional Japanese values. Among of these values is the absolute position of Japanese emperor in the state. If Mishima’s thumos which expressed in the novel linked with his ideology, there is strong similarity between the protagonist’s disappointment and Mishima’s critics related with the Japanese society. Those assumptions supported by novel’s structural aspects.

Abstract:
In the case of literary translations from Japanese into Western languages, paratextual elements such as book blurbs are one of the tools through which the contact between the target-culture readers and the literary work is mediated. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of back-cover blurbs in the process of introducing and promoting a foreign author in a new culture – in our case, the Japanese writer Mishima Yukio (1925-1970) in Romania. Throughout this article, I will present six functions of blurbs which contribute to creating a specific image of a foreign writer and his work in the target cultural space: 1. (re)confirming his literary value and including him in a literary canon; 2. presenting the book-to-screen adaptations of his novels; 3. illustrating similarities between Mishima’s style and the style of some famous authors from the European cultural space; 4. marking the cultural difference; 5. referring to other valences of Mishima Yukio’s literary works; 6. exposing the universal character of Mishima Yukio’s literary work.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In Duras and Mishima works (essentially) in theirs confessions short novels theater plays, (starting from translations for the Japanese writer), we notified love and death as the main thematic structure. Thanks to the leitmotiv of the reapparition and the reincarnation our approach has been turned into love and death, rapture and ecstasy. G. Bataille could be common energy for the two authors giving them that sensual pleasure in each experience of life even death : suicide or seppuku (ritual Japanese suicide) the hypothesis of second culture : Duras way of life in her childhood in Indochina and the European cultural knowledge of Mishima could reduce the distance between them. By the way, it could permit us to consider India as a go-between occident and japan. Then, Duras and Mishima appeared as if they were playing a modern no with reversibility because the waki (who is watching at) and the shite (who is watched by) are always exchanging their plays and their masks

This dissertation is based on the investigation of the books “Sun and Steel” (1968) by the Japanese artist Yukio Mishima (1925-1970) and “The construction of a pornographic body” (2005) by the Belgian artist Nathalie Gassel (1964). Both artists practiced bodybuilding as an artistic process in order to build an organic work of art. Through literature, they reconfigure their practice and produce a particular sense of creation for it. In dialogue with those books, concepts and perspectives from the arts, literature, social sciences and philosophy, in order to understand how the work of these artists, based on bodybuilding, can discuss the body culture approaches and its use as art.

Abstract:

Paris 7, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992PA070074.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of the thesis us centered on yukio mishima's quest of a male identity through his writings, and later through his own military actions. Virility, according to the author, is defined in terms of a combative ethics embodied in the image of the heroic soldier and symbolized by the phallus. As he was lacking the very signifier which constitutes it - in his works he perceives himself as lacking the name-fo-the father which should have transmitted to him the phallus-, y. Mishima attempted to constitute the image of his manliness through his novels. But he failed in his attempt and thereafter turned toward military action, defined accordingly as the only means for man to acquire his identity. The author grasped the notion of virility in purely imaginary terms, i. E. Not sympolically through the transmission by the father of the phallus but though his own perception of what it means to be a man. And as he held onto the image of the heroic warrior he emulated the ethics and actions of the romantic character, which brought him to attempt to die courageously as is dictated by militarist ideology. In his writings and through his actions, y. Mishima attempted to sustain the ideal of male virility. By doing so, he exposed the paradoxal rapport of the male subject to language and "jouissance", all the while pinpointing the mythical and fictitious dimension fo man's sexual identity

Abstract:
2092 data of two-phase flow pressure drop were collected from 18 published papers of which the working fluids include R123, R134a, R22, R236ea, R245fa, R404a, R407C, R410a, R507, CO2, water and air. The hydraulic diameter ranges from 0.506 to 12mm; Relo from 10 to 37000, and Rego from 3 to 4×105. 11 correlations and models for calculating the two-phase frictional pressure drop were evaluated based upon these data. The results show that the accuracy of the Lockhart-Martinelli method, Mishima and Hibiki correlation, Zhang and Mishima correlation and Lee and Mudawar correalion in the laminar region is very close to each other, while the Muller-Steinhagen and Heck correlation is the best among the evaluated correlations in the turbulent region. A modified Chisholm correlation was proposed, which is better than all of the evaluated correlations in the turbulent region and its mean relative error is about 29%. For refrigerants only, the new correlation and Muller-Steinhagen and Heck correlation are very close to each other and give better agreement than the other evaluated correlations.

Abstract:
Abstract Safety is the biggest concern of nuclear power plant and research reactors. As one of the three primary thermal design criteria for rectors, the critical heat flux (CHF) guarantee the reactor’s safety and economics. The bubble dynamics in narrow rectangular channel is didderent from that in conventional channels. Therefore the CHF characteristics obtained in the conventional channel may not be suitable in the narrow rectangular channel. To analyze CHF characteristics in the narrow rectangular channel, a visual experiment study on CHF was carried out in one side heated narrow rectangular channel under upflow condition condition. The experiments were performed at pressures ranging from 1 to 4 MPa, with inlet subcooling ranging from 65 to 120 K and mass flux ranging from 350–200 kg/(m2s). The deionized water was used as the working medium. The relevant thermal-hydraulic parameters and visualization results were collected synchronously. Then compare the CHF experimental values with the predicted values of the W-3 correlation,Mishima correlation, and Chang H correlation. The result shows the predicted values of W-3 correlation and Mishima correlation are always larger than the experimental values. Among these corrrelations, we found that the errors of Chang H correlation is within 30% in 2mm gap size.

Abstract:
Abstract As a common heat exchange structure, vertical pipe is widely used in neaclear reactors and other systems. Flow pattern and flow regime map are the basis of thermal-hydraulic calculation. In this paper, the experiment of air-water two-phase flow pattern was carried out based on the visual test section of 10 mm vertical pipe. Three impedance meters were used to measure the void fraction at three axial positions (L/D = 66, 148, and 229) along the vertical pipe. Compared with the flow pattern criterion proposed by Mishima and Ishii, six superficial liquid velocities are selected for design conditions, which are 0.5 m/s, 1.0 m/s, 1.5 m/s, 2.0 m/s, 2.5 m/s and 3.0 m/s, respectively. And the superficial gas velocities are ranging from 0 to 30 m/s. Considering the inlet and export effects of pipe flow, the void fraction parameters from L/D = 148 (#2 impedance meter) were applied for analysis. Based on the experimental data and random forest algorithm, the flow pattern was identified for each condition, and the flow regime map of 10 mm vertical pipe was established. It is concluded that the flow pattern transition point of air-water flow in the 10 mm vertical pipe was different from that of the Mishima-Ishii’s model, and the inner diameter of the pipe will affect the flow pattern formation and flow pattern transition.

Abstract:
Air-water two-phase flow patterns in a four by four square lattice rod bundle consisting of an acrylic channel box of 68 mm in width and transparent rods of 12 mm in diameter were observed by utilizing a high speed video camera, FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) tubes for rods, and a fiberscope inserted in a rod. The FEP possesses the same refractive index as water, and thereby, whole flow patterns in the bundle and local flow patterns in subchannels were successfully visualized with little optical distortion. The ranges of liquid and gas volume fluxes, <JG> and <JL>, in the present experiments were 0.1 < <JL> < 2.0 m/s and 0.04 < <JG> < 8.85 m/s, which covered typical two-phase flow patterns appearing in a fuel bundle of a boiling water nuclear reactor. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained: (1) the region of slug flow in the <JG> – <JL> flow pattern diagram is so narrow that it can be regarded as a boundary between bubbly and churn flows, (2) the boundary between bubbly and churn flows is close to the boundary between bubbly and slug flows of the Mishima & Ishii’s flow pattern transition model, and (3) the boundary between churn and annular flows is well predicted by the Mishima & Ishii’s model.

Abstract:
Adiabatic two-phase flow pressure drop of R134a have been investigated experimentally in a rectangular channel with hydraulic diameter of 0.14 mm. Single-phase flow experiments were also conducted with liquid and vapor R134a, and an empirical correlation was developed for the turbulent flow regime. The parameter ranges examined for two-phase flow are: mass flux from 158 to 785 kg m−2 s−1; vapor quality from 0.01 to 0.95; and saturation temperature at about 24 ~ 32°C. The experimental data were compared with twelve existing correlations. The homogeneous model and the Mishima and Hibiki (1996) correlation give better predictions than any other correlations.

Abstract:
In this study, liquid-gas two-phase flow pressure drops were measured in an ex-situ PEM fuel cell test section. Pressure drop signatures were studied for three nominal air flow rates and different water flow rates within a flow channel. The pressure drop signatures showed an increasing trend at the beginning of the experiments which were followed by a drop to lower values before reaching uniform patterns. It was observed that as the water flow rate increased, the time interval at which pressure signatures reached uniform patterns decreased. In addition, a qualitative comparison with Mishima-Hibiki model [13] revealed that this two-phase flow pressure drop model showed the best prediction capability for the medium air flow rate used in this study, ∼300mℓ/min inflow channel, corresponding to ∼220 Reynolds number.

Abstract:
To investigate the analogy between heat transfer and fluid friction of two-phase flow in minichannel, heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop and void fraction were simultaneously measured for vertical upward heated air-water two-phase flow in a 2.01 mm I.D. stainless steel tube. Void fraction was slightly different from Smith’s correlation and drift flux model, but the latter gave fairly good prediction when α>0.8. Frictional pressure losses were greater than the experimental results of Mishima-Hibiki for a 2.05 mm I.D. Pyrex glass tube and the correlation of Chisholm-Laird. Heat transfer coefficients agreed with our previous experimental results for a 8.03 mm I.D. tube. A theoretical calculation was performed for an annular liquid film flow model using experimental values of wall shear stress and liquid holdup, and satisfactory results were obtained except when the liquid flow rate was very low.

Abstract:
Experiments on flow boiling of water are carried out for a rectangular vertical channel with dimension (width × depth) 0.86 × 2.0 mm2 (hydraulic diameter 1.2 mm). The Confinement number, Co = [σ/(g(ρL − ρG)dh2)]0.5, for the investigated range of operating parameters is about 2.2. So, applying the criterion Co > 0.5 for micro channels, the investigated channel has to be classified as “micro”. Water as working fluid is used with different mass and heat fluxes. Investigations of heat transfer and pressure drop were carried out. Results of flow visualisation are presented. On the basis of observations, a flow pattern map is obtained and the results are compared with existing flow pattern transition boundaries proposed by Taitel et al. (1980) and Mishima and Ishii (1984). The paper contains recent experimental results of an ongoing EU-project. Previous results have been presented in Shuai et al. (2002, 2003).

Abstract:
Monitoring water quality of small inland lakes and reservoirs is a critical component of USACE water quality management plans. However, limited resources for traditional field-based monitoring of numerous lakes and reservoirs that cover vast geographic areas often leads to reactional responses to harmful algal bloom (HAB) outbreaks. Satellite remote sensing methodologies using HAB indicators is a good low-cost option to traditional methods and has been proven to maximize and complement current field-based approaches while providing a synoptic view of water quality (Beck et al. 2016; Beck et al. 2017; Beck et al. 2019; Johansen et al. 2019; Mishra et al. 2019; Stumpf and Tomlinson 2007; Wang et al. 2020; Xu et al. 2019; Reif 2011). To assist USACE water quality management, we developed an ESRI ArcGIS Pro desktop software toolbox (waterquality for ArcGIS Pro) that was founded on the design and research established in the waterquality R software package (Johansen et al. 2019; Johansen 2020). The toolbox enables the detection, monitoring, and quantification of HAB indicators (chlorophyll-a, phycocyanin, and turbidity) using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Four tools are available 1) to automate the download of Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery, 2) to create stacked image with options for cloud and non-water features masks, 3) to apply water quality algorithms to generate relative estimations of one to three water quality parameters (chlorophyll-a, phycocyanin, and turbidity), and 4) to create linear regression graphs and statistics comparing in situ data (from field-based water sampling) to relative estimation data. This document serves as a user's guide for the waterquality for ArcGIS Pro toolbox and includes instructions on toolbox installation and descriptions of each tool's inputs, outputs, and troubleshooting guidance.

Aslam, Saba, and Megan Schmidt-Sane. Evidence Review: COVID-19 Recovery in South Asian Urban Informal Settlements. SSHAP, June 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2022.012.

Full text
Abstract:
The global pandemic has brought renewed attention toward the everyday challenges in informal settlements. COVID-19 reminds us that southern urban life is rooted in ‘collective’ experiences where toilets and kitchens are shared by multiple families; where the categories of work and home, private and public space overlap; and where the majority live in vulnerable conditions. Despite these challenges, some of the most innovative and collective responses to COVID-19 have emerged from these areas. While informal settlements did face a host of risks and vulnerabilities during the pandemic, local responses have highlighted the resilience of informal settlement communities. However, few informal settlements are actually ‘resilient’ and any local responses must be robustly supported by system-wide change including support from local and national governments, improvements to built infrastructure, and improved access to health care services, among other priorities. The category of ‘informal settlements’ also captures a wide range of settlement types, from a legal slum to an informal settlement with no legal status, with many other types in between. This underscores the need to address fundamental issues that ‘perpetuate conditions of inequity, exclusion and vulnerability’ while also recognising the needs and contexts of different kinds of informal settlements. Whether COVID-19 helps governments recognise conditions of insecurity and vulnerability to address safe and secure housing and infrastructures remains to be seen. This is an update to the previous SSHAP brief on ‘COVID-19 in Informal Urban Settlements’ (March 2020). This evidence review highlights local responses, grassroots efforts, and challenges around COVID-19 recovery within urban informal settlements in South Asia. It focuses on specific examples from Karachi, Pakistan and Mumbai, India to inform policy responses for COVID-19 recovery and future epidemic preparedness and response. We show how local level responses are shaped in these cities where national and international responses have not reached communities at municipal and sub-municipal levels. This brief was written by Saba Aslam (IDS Alumni) and Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), with reviews from Professor Amita Bhide (Tata Institute of Social Sciences, India), Dr Asad Sayeed (Collective for Social Science Research, Pakistan), Annie Wilkinson (IDS), and contributions from Swati Mishra (LSHTM), Prerana Somani (LSHTM), Saleemullah Odho (Deputy Commissioner, Korangi district Karachi), Dr Noman Ahmed (NED University, Karachi), Tahera Hasan (Imkaan Foundation, Karachi), Atif Khan (District Health Officer, Korangi district Karachi), Dr Harris (District Focal person, Korangi), Aneeta Pasha (Interactive for Research and Development, Karachi), Yasmeen Shah (Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum), Ghulam Mustafa (HANDS Pakistan), and Dr Shehrin Shaila Mahmood (icddr,b).
