This paper aims to study Mishima Yukio’s description of homosexuality and misogyny. It will review discourses about Mishima, his performance, works and sexuality. It points out Mishima’s views on love, why the female characters in his books are always similar, and his attitude towards women. In conclusion, this paper will use the characters in Mishima’s novels as examples, analyzing his motives by explaining the intrinsic relationship between homosexuality and misogyny found in his literature.

Abstract:
Mishima Yukio's dramatic suicide half a century ago ensured that his name would forever be associated with a certain fanatic imperialism, and largely fulfilled his own wish that he would die as a military man. And yet, he was until the end foremost a literary artist, concerned with the critical reception of his written works and preoccupied with his lasting reputation as an author. This paper examines Mishima’s portrayal of the celebrity writer, as well as the potentials and limitations of literature as presented in his oft-neglected modern noh play Genji kuyō (Devotional offering for Genji, 1962). It positions the play within the long history of prayers for Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji, ca. 1008) that began in the twelfth century in response to the perceived ambiguous morality of the author Murasaki Shikibu (d. ca. 1014). Mishima's Genji kuyō provides a pointed criticism of readers, as well as anxieties regarding a writer's life and literary recognition. Though Mishima himself famously disowned it after its initial publication, Genji kuyō offers critical insights regarding the writing and reading of literature.

In the social study, there is a concept about strong desire to be recognized by others named thumos. Mishima as a Japanese ultranasionalist have a value about guarding the traditional Japanese values. Among of these values is the absolute position of Japanese emperor in the state. If Mishima’s thumos which expressed in the novel linked with his ideology, there is strong similarity between the protagonist’s disappointment and Mishima’s critics related with the Japanese society. Abstract:
In the case of literary translations from Japanese into Western languages, paratextual elements such as book blurbs are one of the tools through which the contact between the target-culture readers and the literary work is mediated. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of back-cover blurbs in the process of introducing and promoting a foreign author in a new culture – in our case, the Japanese writer Mishima Yukio (1925-1970) in Romania. Throughout this article, I will present six functions of blurbs which contribute to creating a specific image of a foreign writer and his work in the target cultural space: 1. (re)confirming his literary value and including him in a literary canon; 2. presenting the book-to-screen adaptations of his novels; 3. illustrating similarities between Mishima’s style and the style of some famous authors from the European cultural space; 4. marking the cultural difference; 5. referring to other valences of Mishima Yukio’s literary works; 6. exposing the universal character of Mishima Yukio’s literary work.

Tokyo: 25 November 1970, midday. The parade ground of the Self Defence Force's Ichigaya garrison was crowded with personnel. All looked up at the balcony of the main hall, knowing that in the adjoining room the commandant had been taken hostage. On the parapet of the balcony stood one captor, dressed in a brown uniform and donning a headband with an ancient samurai motto, shichishōhōkoku (‘serve the nation for seven lives’). He was Mishima Yukio, the famous writer and founder of a militia named Tatenokai (Shield Society). Hardly able to make himself heard through the wail of sirens and the jeers from the crowd, Mishima held a speech in which he called the constitutional curtailment of the military a threat to Japan's culture. Nothing new, as he had been flirting openly with the extreme right for years. His plea to the men below to follow him in a revolt was greeted with howls of derision.

This article constitutes a comparison of two films — Patriotism (1965) by Yukio Mishima and Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) by Paul Schrader, a biographical film about the Japanese writer and director of the first film. The article focuses on how the latter film imitates the former, both in formal style and in showing the act of suicide. The analysis also covers problems of adaptation, theatricality, homoerotism and the tradition of Japanese cinema.

De entre los numerosos países que contribuyeron a la creación tan única del universo de Mishima, España es uno de los que, a pesar de la impronta que dejó en el escritor, menos investigación existe. La relación de Mishima con nuestro país está llena de altibajos, sinsabores y frustraciones. Sin embargo, y a pesar de ello, el tema de lo español mantiene una presencia inamovible a lo largo de su vida, desde su primera visita a Madrid en 1958 hasta el año de su fatal suicidio en 1970. En el presente trabajo analizaremos de forma pormenorizada el papel de lo español en Mishima, representado básicamente bajo la apariencia del flamenco y la tauromaquia, para, con posterioridad, ver la dimensión cultural que el escritor le confiere en relación con lo japonés y lo occidental. Para ello recurriremos a la presentación de diversos textos en traducción, tanto escritos del propio Mishima como entrevistas realizadas al escritor y allegados, todo ello hilvanado a través de tres importantes figuras que, en sus respectivos campos, condicionaron y forjaron el conocimiento que Mishima obtuvo de España, a saber, Antonio el Bailarín, Katori Kiyoko y Luis Díez del Corral.

Durante gli Anni Sessanta del secolo scorso, all’apice dello sviluppo della cultura giapponese riformata secondo i canoni liberaldemocratici di stampo occidentale, lo scrittore giapponese Yukio Mishima (Tokyo 1925 - 1970) decide di deporre le armi della poesia e della letteratura per incarnare l’eroe della restaurazione. Contro la progressiva colonizzazione del mondo orientale da parte dell’occidente, Mishima oppone l’antico mondo dei guerrieri e dei samurai ribellandosi alla parola e ai suoi regimi discorsivi in quanto responsabili del radicale fraintendimento del soggetto, costantemente ecceduto da qualcosa che discorre e, soprattutto, legifera al suo posto. Nel 1970 Mishima porterà a termine il suo compito infliggendosi un taglio nello stomaco alla maniera dei samurai. Resta tra gli esempi più rimarchevoli di ribelli dello spirito.

The writer Yukio Mishima is known in the Occident mostly for his novels, but he also wrote many plays for the theatre inspired in oriental and western themes. In Madame de Sade, from 1965, the main role is given to the wife of Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, the 18th century libertine and writer. In this paper, we examine Mishima’s reasons for his choice of protagonist. We also try to show how some of the subjects raised in the play reflect ideas that are dear to the author.

Bupleuri Radix (Bupleurum spp. root) is one of the most important crude drugs in Korea, China and Japan. We investigated the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of three Bupleurum taxa (B. falcatum, B. falcatum ‘Mishima’ and B. latissimum). The highest total phenolic content was found in B. latissimum (18.6±1.7 mg/g) and the least in B. falcatum ‘Mishima’ (9.4±0.5 mg/g). The ethyl acetate fractions obtained from B. falcatum and B. falcatum ‘Mishima’ showed higher DPPH radical scavenging activity than the other fractions. In the case of B. latissimum, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of the diethyl ether fraction was higher than that of the other fractions. These results suggest that the three Bupleurum plants may be used as a food additive as a natural antioxidant.

Este manuscrito apresenta uma tradução de um texto do escritor japonês Yukio Mishima, em formato de prefácio, escrito em 1970, sobre duas obras literárias do autor francês Georges Bataille. No prefácio, Mishima faz a apreciação dos escritos de Bataille, destacando o aspecto do erotismo e do valor da transgressão de aspectos religiosos – eminentemente cristandade ocidental – na literatura. Para Mishima, a experiência da leitura de Bataille, ao colocar Deus sob a forma de uma prostituta lasciva e manifesto em um episódio de incesto entre mãe e filho, sentenciam o escrito de Bataille para além da narrativa clássica tão comum no século XX. Por ser um texto raro e de extrema importância tanto para os estudos literários, quanto para a fortuna crítica de ambos autores, empreendemos o gesto tradutório como forma de prover (sobre)vida ao escrito que, por si só, já demonstra sua irrefutável relevância histórica, literária e cultural.

The translation and reception of Japanese literature in Romania has followed the vicissitudes of the country’s coming into modernity in the 19th century and slide into fascism and communism throughout the 20th century, as well as the subsequent ups and downs of the relationship with Japan. This research offers a brief overview of that sinuous path. It then focuses on the pre- and post-1990 reception of the works of Yukio Mishima (1925-1970), one of the iconic figures of Japan’s postwar literature and exemplary for his continued trials and tribulations with modernity. By making use of scholarly and journalistic sources, the current incipient research provides several examples of the translation and reception of Mishima’s works in Romania, as well as the extent to which his presence in this literary space has managed to permeate the psyche of Romanian scholars, literary critics and readers alike.

This paper is titled Theme of Love in Mishima Yukio’s Shiosai. The purpose of writing is to reveal the major themes in Mishima Yukio's Shiosai and its relationship to other structures, especially figures and characters, plots and backgrounds. The analysis uses structural methods that have the concept that in a building of a literary work consists of interrelated and inseparable structures. The results of this paper indicate that the theme of love is a major theme that is evidenced by the correlation and relationship of love problems with other structures, especially figures and characterizations, plot, and background.

AbstractLaboratory mouse strains have mosaic genomes derived from at least three major subspecies that are distributed in Eurasia. Here, we describe genomic variations in ten inbred strains: Mus musculus musculus-derived BLG2/Ms, NJL/Ms, CHD/Ms, SWN/Ms, and KJR/Ms; M. m. domesticus-derived PGN2/Ms and BFM/Ms; M. m. castaneus-derived HMI/Ms; and JF1/Ms and MSM/Ms, which were derived from a hybrid between M. m. musculus and M. m. castaneus. These strains were established by Prof. Moriwaki in the 1980s and are collectively named the “Mishima Battery”. These strains show large phenotypic variations in body size and in many physiological traits. We resequenced the genomes of the Mishima Battery strains and performed a comparative genomic analysis with dbSNP data. More than 81 million nucleotide coordinates were identified as variant sites due to the large genetic distances among the mouse subspecies; 8,062,070 new SNP sites were detected in this study, and these may underlie the large phenotypic diversity observed in the Mishima Battery. The new information was collected in a reconstructed genome database, termed MoG+ that includes new application software and viewers. MoG+ intuitively visualizes nucleotide variants in genes and intergenic regions, and amino acid substitutions across the three mouse subspecies. We report statistical data from the resequencing and comparative genomic analyses and newly collected phenotype data of the Mishima Battery, and provide a brief description of the functions of MoG+, which provides a searchable and unique data resource of the numerous genomic variations across the three mouse subspecies. The data in MoG+ will be invaluable for research into phenotype-genotype links in diverse mouse strains.

Abstract:
O presente artigo descreve resultados de análise de um conto do japonês Yukio Mishima, no qual são abordadas questões sobre suicídio, sexo, honra, além do próprio patriotismo, aspecto central que nomeia a obra. Tal conto é relevante por possibilitar gestos de interpretação em campos que extrapolam as teorias literária e textual, viabilizando uma articulação com propostas dos campos do discurso e da Psicanálise. Esta última, de maior relevo neste trabalho, interessa particularmente porque oportuniza (re)pensar as relações entre constituição subjetiva, escrita, desejo e alteridade. Para condução da presente investigação, lançamos mão de revisão bibliográfica e análise discursiva da materialidade linguística como escolha metodológica. Destarte, tendo o material discursivo como ponto de partida, foi-nos possível destacar efeitos de sentido que emergem do texto de Mishima, em interpretações que encadeiam de maneira complexa as noções de corpo, sexo, gozo e o suicídio como mote de criação. Os resultados asseveram que, dada a especificidade da escrita de Mishima ¾bem como a dimensão complexa das questões que ele aborda ¾os gestos de interpretação ampliam e/ou subvertem sentidos de vida-morte, suicídio, desejo e gozo, ao tempo em que problematizam a escrita como um exercício de alcance da sublimação.

O trabalho que ficou conhecido como obra inaugural do Ankoku Butô de Tatsumi Hijikata foi nomeado Cores Proibidas, fazendo uma alusão direta ao título do romance escrito por Yukio Mishima. Deste ato proposital, surgiu uma amizade entre esses artistas que durou onze anos. Este artigo apresenta a partir do Cores Proibidas do escritor e do dançarino as distinções entre suas perspectivas acerca da morte, atrelada diretamente aos modos que investigaram seus próprios corpos. Propõe-se um embate entre o Corpo Saudável em Mishima – forjado pela doutrina severa do Sol e do Aço – e o Corpo Debilitado em Hijikata – aberto e poroso como condiz à sabedoria anunciada pela lama.
