Full textThe Quebec Jesuits were given the Chinese mission of Xuzhou by the Holy See in 1931. They were supported by many French Canadian donors convinced of the importance of missionary causes. A museum of Chinese arts and the missionary review Le Brigand were the principal publicity of their activities in China. From June 1931 to August 1950, more than 1.1 million of Canadian dollars were given to the Church of Xuzhou by the Procure des Missions Étrangères de Chine, a Jesuit institution founded at Quebec to fund the mission. Poverty, climate instability and political insecurity maintained the Catholic community of Xuzhou in a state of dependence towards the French Canadian Church's generosity. Prioritizing the financing of the schools of the Church of Xuzhou, the Quebec Jesuits trained few Chinese priests before their exile of China by the Chinese Communist Party, starting in 1949.

Full textAt the source of the Chinese thought: the work of Father Mailla (1669-1748) and the history of european ideasJesuit missionary in China, Father Mailla published a monumental work about chinese history and the origin of Chinese culture. His General history of China had a considerable echo in France and Europe. The book was part of the long list of scholarly works published about China by the Jesuits. However, the polemics were born due to the author's affirmation about chinese high antiquity, who seemed to challenge the biblical chronology. The thesis puts the book of Father Mailla in its historical context; it studied the gestation and the diffusion in the European area, and particularly in France. The Research also focuses on the influence of Chinese thought to the european writers and philosophers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Through the reception of “history”, we also discover the difference between two types of philosophical culture, particularly with regard to the vision of the cosmos and of the history. The divergent metaphysical systems are brought to light in a transcultural perspective, where the mirror effects extend the search for meaning.Key words. Full textRegarding today’s intensified transnational activities, this research aims to comprehend the identity construction of immigrants and to analyze the identity traits that they associate with their original country and host country. It also intends to interrogate nationalism theories in the context of globalization, as inspired by banal nationalism (Billig, 1995). From this perspective, the research explores the relations between identity construction and cultural practices in everyday life, such as food practices and transnational travel. It selects the case of Quebec City and its Chinese immigrants to proceed with the examination. Based on a qualitative analysis of 20 semi-structured interviews with 21 participants, this thesis presents the following findings. First, the analysis of identity markers shows that primordialist markers possess strong constructivist functions, and their significance only becomes crucial in social interaction. Second, the analysis presents four transnational identity types that can evolve through time and transform into one another in relation to specific social settings. Third, the thesis proposes a conceptual model to explain those identity changes. This model demonstrates that identity changes are responses to the distinction between two social systems, particularly two sets of social norms, and are influenced by the push and pull factors involved in the process of resocialization. Fourth, a further examination of participants’ cultural practices underlines the complex nature of their role in the national identification process. Those practices can either reinforce or reduce individuals’ national identities based on the way they are intertwined with the push and pull factors. Thus, the research suggests that it is vital to investigate the ways everyday life practices are involved in the push and pull mechanisms to understand how they consequently alter the trajectories of individuals’ national identity development

Canada and Quebec are searching for a large number of immigrants to ensure their demographic, economic and social development. That is the case in the Quebec City region, where the workforce is in high demand due to the aging of the population. By observing the socioprofessionnal dynamics of Chinese skilled workers, the thesis aims to better understand their professional choice in the local labor market and their tactics used to promote their integration. This research seeks to better understand the work search path of Chinese immigrants, their decision to undertake a business project, and the place that they give to social network when they begin their creation or takeover of their company / companies. The methodology adopted in this research is based on life course, the semi-directed interview and the qualitative analysis. The network map is also used to learn about the development of the network, a strategy adopted by Chinese immigrants during the entrepreneurship process. The analysis is divided in two parts. As a first step, the different strategies to enter into Quebec’s labor market from immigrant newcomers are highlighted. Then, the entrepreneurship process and the social network development during the creation and the takeover of the company are analyzed. The trajectories and the characteristics of the individuals, their motivations to undertake a business affair, and the phenomenon of immigration in region are part of the subjects which raise theoretical questions with regard to integration, entrepreneurship and social network. This study, based on stories and interviews of participants, also reveals the diverse resources that business creators and buyers use. Finally, there are differences between creators and buyers of businesses regarding their human capital, their social networks and their ways of running the business. It is necessary for government and para-government bodies to become aware of the different needs of immigrant entrepreneurs in order to put in place policies which contribute to the development of immigrant entrepreneurs.
