Full textThe Quebec Jesuits were given the Chinese mission of Xuzhou by the Holy See in 1931. They were supported by many French Canadian donors convinced of the importance of missionary causes. A museum of Chinese arts and the missionary review Le Brigand were the principal publicity of their activities in China. From June 1931 to August 1950, more than 1.1 million of Canadian dollars were given to the Church of Xuzhou by the Procure des Missions Étrangères de Chine, a Jesuit institution founded at Quebec to fund the mission. Poverty, climate instability and political insecurity maintained the Catholic community of Xuzhou in a state of dependence towards the French Canadian Church's generosity. Prioritizing the financing of the schools of the Church of Xuzhou, the Quebec Jesuits trained few Chinese priests before their exile of China by the Chinese Communist Party, starting in 1949.

Full textAt the source of the Chinese thought: the work of Father Mailla (1669-1748) and the history of european ideasJesuit missionary in China, Father Mailla published a monumental work about chinese history and the origin of Chinese culture. His General history of China had a considerable echo in France and Europe. The book was part of the long list of scholarly works published about China by the Jesuits. However, the polemics were born due to the author's affirmation about chinese high antiquity, who seemed to challenge the biblical chronology. The thesis puts the book of Father Mailla in its historical context; it studied the gestation and the diffusion in the European area, and particularly in France. The Research also focuses on the influence of Chinese thought to the european writers and philosophers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Through the reception of “history”, we also discover the difference between two types of philosophical culture, particularly with regard to the vision of the cosmos and of the history. The divergent metaphysical systems are brought to light in a transcultural perspective, where the mirror effects extend the search for meaning.Key words. Full textRegarding today’s intensified transnational activities, this research aims to comprehend the identity construction of immigrants and to analyze the identity traits that they associate with their original country and host country. It also intends to interrogate nationalism theories in the context of globalization, as inspired by banal nationalism (Billig, 1995). From this perspective, the research explores the relations between identity construction and cultural practices in everyday life, such as food practices and transnational travel. It selects the case of Quebec City and its Chinese immigrants to proceed with the examination. Based on a qualitative analysis of 20 semi-structured interviews with 21 participants, this thesis presents the following findings. First, the analysis of identity markers shows that primordialist markers possess strong constructivist functions, and their significance only becomes crucial in social interaction. Second, the analysis presents four transnational identity types that can evolve through time and transform into one another in relation to specific social settings. Third, the thesis proposes a conceptual model to explain those identity changes. This model demonstrates that identity changes are responses to the distinction between two social systems, particularly two sets of social norms, and are influenced by the push and pull factors involved in the process of resocialization. Fourth, a further examination of participants’ cultural practices underlines the complex nature of their role in the national identification process. Those practices can either reinforce or reduce individuals’ national identities based on the way they are intertwined with the push and pull factors. Thus, the research suggests that it is vital to investigate the ways everyday life practices are involved in the push and pull mechanisms to understand how they consequently alter the trajectories of individuals’ national identity development

Canada and Quebec are searching for a large number of immigrants to ensure their demographic, economic and social development. That is the case in the Quebec City region, where the workforce is in high demand due to the aging of the population. By observing the socioprofessionnal dynamics of Chinese skilled workers, the thesis aims to better understand their professional choice in the local labor market and their tactics used to promote their integration. This research seeks to better understand the work search path of Chinese immigrants, their decision to undertake a business project, and the place that they give to social network when they begin their creation or takeover of their company / companies. The methodology adopted in this research is based on life course, the semi-directed interview and the qualitative analysis. The network map is also used to learn about the development of the network, a strategy adopted by Chinese immigrants during the entrepreneurship process. The analysis is divided in two parts. As a first step, the different strategies to enter into Quebec’s labor market from immigrant newcomers are highlighted. Then, the entrepreneurship process and the social network development during the creation and the takeover of the company are analyzed. The trajectories and the characteristics of the individuals, their motivations to undertake a business affair, and the phenomenon of immigration in region are part of the subjects which raise theoretical questions with regard to integration, entrepreneurship and social network. This study, based on stories and interviews of participants, also reveals the diverse resources that business creators and buyers use. Finally, there are differences between creators and buyers of businesses regarding their human capital, their social networks and their ways of running the business. It is necessary for government and para-government bodies to become aware of the different needs of immigrant entrepreneurs in order to put in place policies which contribute to the development of immigrant entrepreneurs.

Full textECLAIRs, the hard X-ray imager of the Chinese-French SVOM mission, is dedicated to the detection and localization in near real-time of cosmic transient sources in the energy range from 4 to 150 keV. This instrument is a wide field camera, equipped with a detection plane paved with 6400 CdTe Schottky detectors, which allows to create hard X-ray images of the sky thanks to a localization system called "coded mask". The work presented in this manuscript details the design, the realization and the measurement of the performances of hybrid modules of 32 detectors read by an ASIC (called XRDPIX modules), which constitute the basic bricks of the detection plan, and which make it possible to reach unequalled performances for this type of instrument with a threshold in energy equal to 4 keV. After having posed the problem of detection of transient cosmic sources in X-rays, based on the astrophysical context of the SVOM mission, and then detailed its main instrument, I present, in this thesis, my work on the realization of large pixelated detection plans for gamma-ray astronomy, with in particular my contribution to the study and the realization of the XRDPIX module. The development of the XRDPIX modules, calls for both a low noise design and the use of innovative technologies. The CdTe detectors are biased down to -450V and regulated at low temperature (nominally 20°C) in order to minimize the leakage current and to limit the polarization effects. The low energy threshold required for the space mission is reached thanks to a thorough characterization of the elements constituting the 200 flight XRDPIX, which form the ECLAIRs camera. I present in detail the physical and technological characteristics of these modules, the various stages of their development, justifying the solutions and technical compromises that have marked their manufacture. Then, based on an abundant statistical sample, obtained during the numerous tests and qualifications carried out on several hundreds of modules and sub-modules, I present the results of measurements which demonstrate the excellent performances of the XRDPIX module, in terms of spectral resolution, low energy threshold, gain and counting. Additional studies are also shown, in order to complete the validation of the XRDPIX by analyzing the influence of various physical parameters on the performances, such as temperature. In conclusion, thanks to these abundant data analyses, and to models of the total equivalent noise, I propose optimal settings for two key configuration parameters: the bias value for the high voltage and the peaking time, which allow to obtain the 4 keV energy threshold required by the SVOM mission, with a good uniformity on the whole detection plane. Finally, I present this feedback, coupled with the study of the key parameters that determine the sensitivity of a wide field imager in the hard X-ray domain (detection area, energy range, field of view, ...), which leads me to propose avenues for the realization of ambitious instruments with significant gains in sensitivity in the future

Full textBased on the analysis of official data, this research proposes a study on the relationship between the trend of new international migration flows from China after the 2000s and the economic and social performances of Chinese immigrants in Canada and Quebec. The purpose of this research is to observe the quantity and the quality of new Chinese immigrants as well as their performances after immigration. These new flows of people are different from the previous ones, because the rich and elites become the majority of the recent immigrants. The new immigration tide from China is also accompanied by a strong growth of the number of Chinese students who study abroad and by a significant flow of returnees. However, the results we got don’t show any improvement of their performance despite their more skilled and younger profiles. Indeed, the recent Chinese immigrants brought many influences to Canada and Quebec. Due to big changes in the internal economic and social conditions, the trend of these flows from China will not stop in the near future. Thus, the policymakers of the host country and region need to pay more attention and better react in front of this tendency.

Full textThe Quebec Federation of catholic scouts was founded in 1935. Its goals were demanding: it proposed to train men, Christians and citizens. Moreover, it intended to train leaders who could influence the French-Canadian society. Although headed by the Catholic Church, the Francophone Quebec scout movement was in fact dominated and directed by laymen. The Scoutmaster (SM) and the Patrol Leader (PL) were the two main lay leaders of the scout troop. They were respectively in charge of the troop (24-32 youths) and the patrol (6-8 youths). The PL was a young scout himself. The ideals and system representations conveyed to youths were transmitted through the SM and PL. They needed to be trained appropriately to respect their commitment. Beyond the regular competencies of a leader, their training proposed to transmit nothing less than an authentic dealing with the world: the ideal of Scoutmaster. Taking the scout method recommended by the Federation as a formal background, this dissertation analyses its true life actualization by Scoutmasters and Patrol Leaders of four Outremont troops. The impact of the Quiet Revolution on the traditional representation of the boyscout leader is also examined.

Full textThe legitimacy of an organization is based on its mission, i.e. its raison d’être. Some libraries directors and many researchers fear that the legitimacy of public libraries is challenged in the information society. Moreover, official texts presenting the missions of public libraries are varied and the missions are deliberately not defined there. In Quebec, where a large majority of autonomous public libraries are directly under the supervision of municipalities, public libraries have to define and legitimate their missions with city councillors. The main objective of this research is to understand, via the discourses, the point of view of city councillors in Quebec on the missions of autonomous public libraries, compared to the libraries’ practices in their communities. Using the theory of the social construction of reality, a conceptual framework is proposed not only to study the discourses in their textual dimension, but also to contextualize them and analyze the distance between them and the libraries’practices. The research strategy adopted is that of the multiple case study. The aim is to develop an in-depth analysis of each case as well as a cross-case analysis. The twelve cases (municipalities) were selected according to two criteria of variation (size of the municipality and annual budget allocated by the municipality to the library) and a discriminant criterion (the distance from the Université de Montréal). Interviews were conducted with the city councillors who chair the commissions or the committees on which the public libraries depend. These interviews and the municipal cultural policies were subjected to a discourse analysis. The interviews with the directors of the public libraries and documents were subjected to content analysis. This made possible the triangulation of methods and data sources. Neither the city councillors in Quebec, nor the professionals have a homogenous discourse on the missions of public libraries. However, a model of discourse does emerge. It shows a “limited” discourse compared to the literature, in which a passive image of thelibrary is presented and in which the tradition continues in spite of the context of the information society. But the analysis also revealed that the city councillors base their points of view on their own convictions as individuals, on their role in the management of the municipality as elected officials, and on the image they have of the users of public libraries. Finally, the analysis revealed an axis of differentiation of the points of view according to whether the discourse was based on fundamental values or on the (real or supposed) uses of the library.
