Full textThe subject of this thesis is the artistic representations of the immaculate conception that became cult objects throughout the three centuries of the colonisation of Brazil. They are mostly wooden polychrome sculptures. The originality of this thesis lies in its theme and cultural context, in the aspects of analysis in art history (the cult of images and their meaning) and in the choice of historic documents and of the research methods. The cult of the virgin is a major element of the portuguese-brazilian culture. Among over 450 names by which mary was invoked, the immaculate conception - chosen as patron of the portuguese empire in 1646 - is by far the favorite. No other catholic figure of devotion received greater honor in the art of the counter-reformation. The two questions at stake are : why did the images of the immaculate conception become such important cult objects in portugal and Brazil ? How did this happen ? My hypothesis answers the first question : the multifold meanings of purity applied to the imamculate conception and to her image. The concept of purity is understood from an anthropological viewpoint and encompasses various fields such as theology and the condition of woman. This meaning of purity is the most important and differentiating element of the identity of the image of the immaculate conception. Which is composed also of powers and qualities applied to other images of the virgin. The answer to the second question is that the sculpted body is the artistic media that most allows the fusion between the prototype and the image, a prerequisite for the cult of images. The analysis of the cult of these images and of their meaning comprehends the cultural specificity of portugal and of brazil

Full textThe beatification of John Henry Newman in 2010 should highlight the theological thought of this globally acknowledged genius of the nineteenth century, including his mariology which is at once original, ahead of its time and seminal. Writing at the time of the dogmatic definition of the Immaculate Conception, he offers key insights which reveal the continuing relevance of this definition, with this enigmatic formula at its heart : “the conception of the Virgin mother of God was that of the first-begotten woman who was to conceive the first-begotten of all creatures”. This work aims to understand this formula using selected writings of Newman. The first part sets out the theological content of the bull Ineffabilis Deus, its major orientations and internal logic, and reads the formula in this light; next, it traces chronologically Newman's mariology as an Anglican and then as a Catholic, determining its specificity, its development and its homogeneous continuity. The second part examines his other writings on subjects which bring out the themes at stake in Pius IX’s formula : sanctification and the relations between the Incarnate Word and his mother. Fully attentive to the “economy” at work in the divine plan, Newman considers the Incarnation as always redemptive; the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the mother of God and the unfallen Eve, far from being merely incidental, establishes her intimate part in this purpose as pledge of the “new creation” which is the destiny of humanity. Anticipating the biblical, patristic and theological renewal of contemporary mariology, Newman proves relevant and beneficial to our understanding of the Faith in the 21st century

Full textThe introduction of the celebration of the conception of mary (december 8 th) in the western countries during the xiith century is at the origin of a long controversy which can be reconstructed thanks to numerous documents of various types: treaties, sermons, commentaries of the sentences, quodlibeta, liturgical books and even chronicles and litterary texts. Besides the fact it was new, the celebration of the conception of mary shocked many theologists because of its apparent incompatibility with a doctrinal system firmly established: universality of the original sin, transmission of this sin by means of an irremediably guilty sexuality, and the necessity for each person to be redeemed by the sacrifice of the passion of christ. The discussions concerning a possible exception in favour of mary did not only lead to a better view on these various points, they also clarified a certain number of anthropological representation concerning the reproduction, the virginal conception, the mother to son and creature to creator relationship. These discussions also reveal some social or political models, notably concerning the figure of the sovereign power and how it related to the law, or the personal status of individuals. We can distinguish three phases in the controversy. At the beginning the propaganda in favour of the celebration gives birth to a new type of discourse which both explores new ways of thinking and remains strongly linked to the development of scholastic thought. Subsequently the immaculist opinion is completly left aside by the dominating discourse of an academic theology at a climax and only indirect testimonies of its existence still remain, whereas the celebration keeps gaining ground. Yet between the end of the xiiith century and the beginning of the xivth century both anonymous and famous voices are heard among theologists in favour of a new discourse which should reconcile cult and doctrine. This reversal leads in a third phase to paradoxical results: while, during the course of the xivth century the celebration becomes a widespread habit, and the immaculist opinion becomes the major trend, the existence of a barrier of resistance in the dominican order will give a new unexpected turn to the controversy, till the council of bale which brings the crisis to an uncertain end in 1439

Full textThis work presents a methodological approach aiming at analyzing and processing mission profiles and more generally environmental variables (e.g. solar or wind energy potential, temperature, boundary conditions) in the context of system design. This process constitutes a key issue in order to ensure system effectiveness with regards to design constraints and objectives. In this thesis, we pay a particular attention on the use of compact profiles for environmental variables in the frame of system level integrated optimal design, which requires a wide number of system simulations. In a first part, we propose a clustering approach based on partition criteria with the aim of analyzing mission profiles. This phase can help designers to identify different system configurations in compliance with the corresponding clusters: it may guide suppliers towards “market segmentation” not only fulfilling economic constraints but also technical design objectives. The second stage of the study proposes a synthesis process of a compact profile which represents the corresponding data of the studied environmental variable. This compact profile is generated by combining parameters and number of elementary patterns (segment, sine or cardinal sine) with regards to design indicators. These latter are established with respect to the main objectives and constraints associated to the designed system. All pattern parameters are obtained by solving the corresponding inverse problem with evolutionary algorithms. Finally, this synthesis process is applied to two different case studies. The first consists in the simplification of wind data issued from measurements in two geographic sites of Guadeloupe and Tunisia. The second case deals with the reduction of a set of railway mission profiles relative to a hybrid locomotive devoted to shunting and switching missions. It is shown from those examples that our approach leads to a wide reduction of the profiles associated with environmental variables which allows a significant decrease of the computational time in the context of an integrated optimal design process

Full textThis thesis was devoted to the study of the specifications of the spectral analyzer of the PHI instrument (Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager) aboard the Solar Orbiter mission of the European Space Agency. We will review briefly the theory of solar oscillations and the birth, goals and results of helioseismology, the domain of astrophysics that studies them. Afterwards, we will have a look at the different criteria that define the main characteristics of PHI’s spectral analyzer, a Fabry Perot interferometer (FPI). We will see how the peculiar environmental conditions of the mission, together with the scientific objectives, constrain the instrumental parameters and the technological choices, and we will propose a concept of spectral analyzer based on two FPIs meeting the requirements. A proof of concept was studied in the lab, in the form of a piezoelectric tunable Fabry Perot cavity. We will describe the experiments performed in order to determine the characteristics of this interferometer, proceed to calibration measurements, and address the issue of in-flight usability. We have taken our FPI to a solar observatory in Tenerife in spring 2008 in order to measure solar oscillations. Performance was satisfactory, although we were not able to obtain a nice enough k-ω diagram. We compare our results with ones obtained with data of the GONG network that stand as a reference

Full textIn recent years, several states have introduced new corporate forms into their commercial law, which requires the commitment of shareholders towards a “mission”. By stipulating their purposes in their documents, these companies appear as a paradox for literature on corporate governance: would such a commitment not hamper strategic flexibility and undermine the monitoring of management? Is it not likely to deter shareholders' investments? The aim of this thesis is to explain the emergence of "mission-driven companies", to understand their motivations, but also to characterize the alternative model of governance they draw and the significance of this model in management science.First, the analysis of the process of emergence and design of these mission-driven forms in the United States enables us to enrich the classical model of the corporate contract, by showing that such a contract can have restrictive effects on the collective purposes if it only contains a commitment on invested resources, or provisions on the distribution of decision rights or value created to stakeholders. The thesis proposes, in a second step, a model of the "mission": by specifying desirable, yet potentially inventive, properties of the upcoming collective action, the mission calls for the design of novel strategies aiming at building new commons and collective interests. This model reveals, beyond the new legal forms, a wider class of “mission-driven” organizations, of which we can observe numerous variations both historically and currently. Finally, the thesis examines the systems of governance of mission-driven companies. A study of contrasting cases shows original devices combining control of the strategic exploration and solidarity mechanisms. The mission thus opens fruitful perspectives to explore new possible systems of solidarity
