Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the length and readability of a mission statement contribute to stakeholder behavior regarding the mission statement. The majority of studies in the mission statement literature have not attempted to find an empirical link between mission statement design and employee behavior. This study employed a 2 (length: long v. short) x 2 (readability: low v high) post-test only factorial design to test the relationship between message design and beliefs about the mission statement. Students at a large southeastern university (n=212) were shown the one of four treatments and asked to report their reactions on a brief questionnaire. Results indicated a significant link between readability and beliefs about the functionality of the mission statement. Using the theory of planned behavior, the effects of readability on beliefs about the mission statement were shown to be linked to behavioral intention. The results of this study partially support the relationship between message characteristics of mission statements and the behavioral intention of employees, as well as supporting the TPB model.

Mathye, Mokadi Max. "Becoming a missional church : the case of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA)." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24453.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of my study is: Becoming a missional church- the case of Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa (ELCSA). The lack of missional astuteness and intelligence emanating from Christendom mind-sets and agendas is detrimental to the growth of the church and is creating missional chaos and paralysis; this is what I am struggling with in my study. The challenge I am grappling with is that the ELCSA as a church has been exposed to a variety and multiplicity of missional cultures and mission settings through a diversity of missionaries operating from different missional landscape and backgrounds. The various and differing missional histories has created inconsistencies in the theological foundations that underpin and add force to her missional outlook and maturity. As the church considers becoming a missional church, there is an imperative need to radically revisit her traditional ecclesiologies in order to develop a clearer understanding of her missional vocation. The missional direction of the church is in quandary, partly because of the leadership failure to manage the contradictory and inconsistent missional attempts and missional immaturity within the ELCSA. Leadership development and formation within the Lutheran training institutes in Southern Africa, which are crucial in church life seems inadequate from a curriculum perspective. Failure to understand and appreciate the current missional language will inadvertently confuse the church’s understanding of God’s mission in the world (missio Dei). The challenge facing the ELCSA will therefore be an imperative and absolute need to move from a church with mission to a missional church. The study seeks to further explore and investigate insights from the ELCSA’s mission history with a view of determining the missional health and checking whether the church has a comprehension and understanding of the concept and language of a missional church and missional leadership. In this study I will also attempt to answer two possible sub-problems of the study viz. How does the ELCSA create a missional leadership aptitude environment and how does the ELCSA implement the missional conversation(s) to the operating landscape of the church? This study will also contrast the attractional and incarnational mindsets I reflect in the conclusion the significance and importance of a missional church and highlight the characteristics or indicators of such a church by applying it to the ELCSA. Recommendations are indicated for consideration by the ELCSA and are not presented as an answer or solution to the challenge that the church is facing.

Schiewer, Tana M. "The Nonprofit Mission Statement as Genre: Speech Acts, Social Facts, and Ecologies." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/80475.

Full text
Abstract:
In this case study, the author explores the nonprofit mission statement as a genre, its place within a genre ecology, and its communication through various genres. Theorizing the mission statement as a controlling and stabilizing force in a genre ecology, the author notes the potential of the mission statement to enact the genre function, "the authority a genre has even in the absence of its author. Noting the limitations of current genre ecology modeling (GEM), the author maps the genres, documents, and activities of a small community foundation using a revised form of GEM that more purposefully includes speech genres to map relationships; in this case study, the speech genres revealed how the mission statement is mediated through genres and activities. Further, observations and interviews revealed ideological conflicts of the organization's key stakeholders that resulted in clashes between key stakeholder values and the language of the nonprofit's mission (and other genres). Additionally, ideological consensus resulted in the addition of new organizational activities and genres, even though these activities are not in line with the language of the mission statement as written. Eventually, these activities become social facts, "ideas that the key stakeholders believe are in line with the mission when they are, in fact, in conflict with it. If these social facts are not re-aligned with the mission statement, new activities and genres are created and mediated by speech genres, potentially moving the organization further away from its purpose and goals. The author ultimately suggests a cycle of genre and activity production that will realign the social facts and the mission statement and encourage organizational leaders to return to the mission statement and change the language to reflect the organization's new reality.

Abstract:
Many new institutions struggle with issues of identity and purpose, which can create instability and lack of growth. Mission statements are often used to clearly identify the characteristics that make an organization unique. This study was informed by theories of organizational management, art integration constructivism, and Bronfenbrenner's cultural ecology. The literature indicates that there is a strong connection between a clear and concise mission statement and the organization's behaviors. This study examined a small Southeast Michigan charter school devoted to integrating arts and academic curricula to determine how the stated mission was understood and implemented by its stakeholders. An applied, mixed methodology design was used to investigate the connection between the stated mission and the actions of the school's stakeholders. A 4-point, Likert type, quantitative survey was administered to 40 teachers, administrators, and board members and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the summative data. The analysis examined coded themes and found inconsistencies in the knowledge base of the school's stakeholders, primarily related to a lack of shared understandings of organizational statements and arts integration. The study recommendations include a guide for a staff introduction to ongoing pragmatic action research as a method to investigate and implement possible resolutions to the stated problem. The action research would help the school meet its stated goals of providing a coherent, arts-integrated learning experience for the school's students. The study and recommendations will lead to positive social change in that a coherent, arts-integrated education has been shown to provide an educationally and socially beneficial learning environment for the individuals involved in the program.

Abstract:
Mission statement is important to companies, especially as a strategic communication tool with stakeholders. Innovation is also important to companies and has its implications on performance. This study examines the relationship between financial performance and explicitly communicating innovation in mission statement. The study uses a quantitative approach with logistic regression to test empirical hypotheses related to revenues, profits, change in assets and market value, and their relationship with explicitly communicating innovation in mission statements. The conclusion is that among all the financial performance indicators considered, only market value represents a strong and significant result, indicating a positive relationship with explicitly communicating innovation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of a university's faculty as to how the strategies, staffing policies, and systems procedures were aligned with the mission statement. Differences in perceptions were examined by college affiliation, rank, primary teaching assignment and gender. Data were analyzed to determine if there were correlations between faculty members' perceptions of alignment of the university's mission statement with administration's actions, policies, and procedures and their level of organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and overall satisfaction with their job and the organization The population for this study was comprised initially of 1363 teaching faculty members of the University of Central with more than one year of service and reduced to 1285 who were determined to meet the criteria for inclusion. The 67-item survey instrument used in this study was developed and copyrighted by Dr. Robert C. Ford (Ford et al, 2006), and was administered during January and February 2006 A total of 297 usable responses (23.1%) were returned. An analysis of all responses indicated that there was a wide disparity in perceptions and that respondents did not believe that there was a strong alignment of mission with administrative practices, policies, and procedures. This confirmed an earlier finding as to the importance of perception (Dickson, Ford, & Upchurch, 2006, Ford et al., 2006). Significant differences in faculty perceptions by college affiliation, university rank, and primary teaching assignment were identified. Significant differences based on gender were minimal. The correlations of items representing level of organizational commitment were highly correlated. Items representing job satisfaction and overall satisfaction with their job and the organization were moderately intercorrelated, and the interrelationship was not strong.

The following research project seeks to answer the question: “To what extent can differences among juvenile detention centers be explained on the basis of concepts of restorative and retributive justice?” To investigate, mission statements were collected from a national sample of Juvenile Detention Centers. A semantic network analysis was performed to answer the above research question. The computer program CATPAC was used to create 2-d images of the semantic analysis. From these images eight themes emerged through clusters: institutional identity, public safety, life skill values, family and child tie, and community and family tie, support from staff, support from environment, and support from environment and staff. These themes were reflective of retributive or restorative orientation. Results indicate that male public institutions are reflective of retributive justice while female public, male private, and female private institutions are more reflective of restorative justice. These findings suggest biases and treatment patterns within the juvenile justice system.

Youngberg, Lon. "The Democratic Purpose Of Post Secondary Education: Comparing Public, Private Nonprofit, And Private For-Profit Mission Statements For Expression Of Democratic Social Purpose." DigitalCommons@USU, 2008. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/97.

Full text
Abstract:
Thomas Jefferson envisioned a symbiotic relationship between democracy and public education because he considered educated citizens to be the critical ingredient of a successful democracy. Nevertheless, political and educational reforms over the past two centuries have not always been kind to the relationship that Jefferson envisioned. This study examines frequency that postsecondary education institutions declare a democratic social purpose in their mission statements. The DSP definition, data instrumentation, and theoretical lens for this study were situated from the Jeffersonian perspective. Although the primary concern for this study was publicly funded/subsidized postsecondary education, recent enrollment growth in private education and privatization initiatives, such as voucher programs, justifies comparison with private nonprofit and private for-profit institutions to reveal how the different types of institutional control influence DSP. The comparison also provides a sense of the non-economic consequences of reduced public education subsidy and intentional or unintentional privatization. A number of Carnegie classification variables were also examined to better understand what factors influence DSP expression. This study utilized a national random sample of undergraduate institutions, from associates colleges to research universities. The sample size was 336 and there were no cases of missing data. Interrater reliability was calculated as .873 Kappa on the dichotomous dependent variable (DSP presence or absence). The first research objective was to determine if public, private nonprofit, and private for-profit institutional mission statements differ in the frequency of DSP expression. Public institutions exhibited 36.5% DSP, private nonprofit institutions exhibited 69.1% DSP, and private for-profit institutions exhibited 11.9% DSP. Chi-square test determined that there was significant difference between each of 2x2 comparisons (p < .003). The second research objective utilized logistic regression analysis to gauge the influence of several variables on DSP frequency. Institutional control, focus, enrollment, and mission statement length were found to be significant at the p = .05 level. There are differences between public and private institutions and also between two-year and four-year institutions in the frequency of DSP expression. These differences have serious social and political implications that will likely go unnoticed as the bulk of society focuses on private and economic concerns.

Abstract:
Due to the persisting failure of ever continuing reforms driven by politics a new mode of reform has been established during the last decade: Universities are granted higher autonomie with respect to decisionmaking aiming at strengthening their capability of self-organisation. With flexible clauses in new higher education laws the possibility for self-reference has been created - Universities are responsible for themselves. This possibility is nevertheless just one of the required conditions for sucessful self-reference. The second required condition, the ability for self-reference, is not fulfilled automatically by just "loosening the chains". In order to develop this ability Universities have to recognize themselves as embedded in a tight network of relationships and they have to be able to incorporate reciprocal effects between themselves and its environment into their decisionmaking. This case of an organisation being able to reflect on its impact on its environment as well as on the backlashes created by that, can be termed "rational reflexivity" with LUHMANN (1984, p.617). This paper adresses the management instrument of creating mission statements and analyses, how this instrument can contribute to the rational reflexivity of Universities. Using the theory of social systems three conditions are suggested that should be accounted for when aiming to unreveal the potential of the orienting and coordinating management instrument mission statements

Abstract:
The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County is interested in determining the approach that it may take if it decides to pursue conservation and limited development as a strategy to preserve land. In using conservation and limited development, the Conservancy may put into practice its core values by employing this intensely-collaborative conservation tool and informing itself about development, conservation, collaboration and financing, in order to meet multiple community needs. Information about the limited development process was collected from books, news articles and personal communications with professionals to determine its components. Each chapter of this report analyzes one component, putting authors’ strategies into conversation, critiquing these and then offering conservancies several different approaches to accomplish each component. This report concludes that the most important decision that a conservancy must make when pursuing conservation and limited development, is determining the level of involvement appropriate for its conservation mission, resources, expertise, and role in realizing project goals. The final portion of the report provides two case studies that draw upon telephone interviews with professionals, and analyze the contrasting levels of involvement that each project’s conservancy assumed. Since this report was requested by the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, it addresses some concerns and realities particular to the county; however, most recommendations are generally applicable to other land conservancies.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mission and vision statements are concepts that are often discussed at meetings where companies discuss and debate whether or not to implement them to ensure sustained profitability or increase the motivation of employees. This, however, is a misconception in the business world since mission and vision statements do not lead to instantaneous success. Mission and vision statements are strategic tools to help organisations to focus on what they are good at and what they stand for. Mission statements help an organisation to identify which current direction the organisation should be taking, whereas a vision statement helps an organisation to identify where it wants to be in the future. A mission and vision statement provides a goal towards which the people of the company can work so that it can be profitable and endure lasting success. This goal binds the workers of an organisation, resulting in people that are happy since they know what the organisation's core purpose is. They key importance of these statements is that they provide guidance of strategic and day-ta-day operational decision-making. Companies that enjoy enduring success have core values and a core purpose that remain fixed, while their business strategies and practices endlessly adapt to a changing world. The dynamics of preserving the core while stimulating progress is the reason that companies such as Hewlett Packard, 3M, Merck, Sony and Nordstrom became elite institutions able to renew themselves. It is important to realise is that there is no documented proof that organisations that do not have these mission and vision statements are less successful than those that do have them. The dynamic of the concepts developed in Built to Last, i.e. preserving the core/stimulate the progress should be kept in mind. Neither vision nor mission statements are the primary engines of enduring great companies, and bear in mind that visions simply provide the guiding context for bringing the this dynamic to life.

Abstract:
This thesis uses feminist critical discourse analysis to find and understand the discourses embedded in the mission statements and program documents of three domestic violence and/or rape crisis centers that primarily serve Black/African American populations in three distinct geographic locations in the United States. Existing literature addresses the discourses present in domestic violence and sexual assault service provision, but no literature addresses the discourses present in the mission statements of domestic violence and rape crisis centers, leaving a considerable gap in the literature. This project uses frameworks of feminist understandings of Foucauldian discursive patriarchal power, intersectionality and material feminism to analyze the mission statements and put them in conversation with each other. The three organizations chosen, Our House, Jenesse Center and Black Women’s Blueprint, each are 2015 award grantees of one of two federal Office of Violence Against Women’s grants to provide services to culturally specific populations. I argue the mission statements of Our House, Jenesse Center, and Black Women’s Blueprint have a discourse of resistance articulated through embedded discourses of Black feminism, neoliberalism, community and cultural competency, and storytelling. This larger discourse of resistance draws on Black/African American historical structures of resistance. Understanding Black/African American serving domestic violence and rape crisis centers as sites of resistance allows for a deeper understanding of Black/African American women’s unique expression of power and domination.

Abstract:
Market orientation is generally defined as the implementation of the marketing concept within organizations. It has been operationalized by such dimensions as customer orientation (the pursuit of customer satisfaction), Competitor Orientation, Inter-functional Coordination, and Responsiveness. According to a growing body of literature, this strategy is likely to help higher educational institutions in their effort overcome the challenges and pressures of their changing environment (these are: massification, professionalisation, budget constraints, the rise of stakeholders’ requirements in terms of quality control and accountability… In this research, I first object that those researchers who are suggesting market orientation as the suitable strategy have said nothing as for its content or definition. I also contend that empirical works using higher educational setting to operationalize the market orientation strategy are just conceptual transpositions, which do not consider the specificities of higher education institutions as compared to private firms. These shortcomings are the theoretical justification of my research. Hence, after showing the origin of the market orientation rhetoric in higher education, I develop a new conceptualization of the strategy and suggest a new scale for its measurement. The following dimensions composed my suggested scale: Stakeholder orientation (Students, policy-makers, and organizations), Competitor Orientation, Collaboration, Inter-functional Coordination, and Responsiveness. The empirical validation of these dimensions was enriched by a quantitative assessment of the place of the market orientation strategy within the mission statements of higher educational institutions. This research is one attempt in a whole ongoing trend towards research on how to relevantly import private sector strategies into public and nonprofit sector organizations, among which, higher education/

Abstract:
In this dissertation, the strategic planning process in a family owned firm of Saudi Arabia will be discussed. The main aim is to develop a comprehensive model of strategic planning, specific and customized to the family businesses of Saudi Arabia. The model will encompass all the factors that are unique to the Saudi Arabian family businesses, such as the family culture of Saudi business families, the interfamily dynamics that shape the strategic approach of the family and the unique market conditions or the external environment that influences the strategic planning process of family owned firms in Saudi Arabia. The literature review extensively covers the topic of strategic planning, family business dynamics and major salient features of family business described by various authors. The literature review also discusses the models of family business that define the interaction of various elements in family owned firms, their drawbacks and the gaps in applicability of these documented models to family businesses in general and specificallyt o Saudi Arabian family businessesT. he literaturer eview revealst hat there is no comprehensivem odel of strategicp lanning processf or the family owned firms that highlight all the critical factors that shape the strategic planning process and also documents uccessfufli rms that haveb enefitedf rom thesem odels. Based on an extensive survey of the family owned firms of Saudi Arabia and statistical analysis of various unique features of such firms, the most critical factors that play a major role in strategy formulation could be isolated. These critical factors helped in designing the strategic planning model for the family owned firms of Saudi Arabia. The model was practically implemented and validated in 10 family businesses of the kingdom and results confirm the applicability of this model. The model formulation and validation in the family firms of Saudi Arabia, forms the main focus of this dissertation.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses quantitative as well as qualitative methods to examine the impact of school philosophical statements on school development planning. Three case study schools from an Asian city were selected. A questionnaire and face to face interviews were used as data gathering tools. The data from the questionnaires informed the questions created for the interviews and the outcomes of these two data sources were analysed qualitatively. As a result of the findings from qualitative analysis a further quantitative analysis was made of the questionnaire data. A total of 188 responses to questionnaires were examined and 22 interviews took place. The main aim of this research is to empirically examine the assumptions that underpin the Council of International Schools and New England Association of Schools and College’s accreditation standards for school philosophical statements and development planning. At the heart of these assumptions is the belief that school development planning is most effective when it is closely linked to a clearly written, collaboratively created set of philosophical statements which articulate the school’s values and beliefs. To date this assumption has not been substantiated by research. A secondary aim is to examine the systems and structures in schools that assist in linking the school’s philosophy to its planning processes. The data resulted in a set of interesting findings. Firstly, insights were gained into techniques used to reaffirm and embed school philosophy into the school’s culture. Secondly, the data suggested that the assumptions made by the accrediting agencies hold true under certain circumstances but that a school’s underlying ideology may be more powerful in driving institutional planning. As a result of the findings, suggestions to further develop accreditation standards are made and ideas for further research are proposed.

Abstract:

This qualitative study was conducted to identify whether or not a relationship exists between a leader’s sense of life calling and the mission statement he or she creates for the organization he or she leads, in relation to life calling theory. Organizational leaders from Christian schools associated with the Council on Educational Standards and Accountability, who had participated in the creation of the school’s mission statement, made up the sample for the study. Participants were interviewed utilizing open-ended questions and the data was analyzed employing the Consensual Qualitative Research method and in relation to the elements of the Life Calling Model and the Life Calling MAL-3D Rubric. The mission statement of the schools involved in the study were evaluated for the presence of organizational calling, in relation to the three components of the Life Calling Model, using content analysis. The two sets of data were evaluated to identify any relationship between the two.

The focus of this study attempted to understand three aspects of organizational leadership, specifically related to the organizational leader and the organization’s mission statement. The first aspect of the study identified the leaders’ level of thought maturity on life calling. The second aspect of the study included an analysis of the organizational mission statement for the presence of organizational calling or purpose. The third aspect of this study attempted to identify whether or not a relationship existed between the two sets of data, and if so, what the nature of that relationship was.

This work examines the purpose, construction, and identification of stakeholders in organizational vision and mission statements. This work also reviews differing views on the governing objectives of publicly held companies and concludes that the objective of maximizing shareholder value, while acting responsibly toward all the other stakeholders, provides the best opportunity for providing long-term value to all The Eastman Chemical Company vision, "to be the world's preferred chemical company", and the mission, ''to create superior value for customers, employees, investors, suppliers, and publics", are closely examined. Value creation, from each stakeholder's point of view, is evaluated, including the view of the employee investor. At Eastman, all employees have some equity ownership in the company. The thesis concludes that the Eastman vision and mission are both realistic and achievable, albeit difficult. Success will depend on effectively aligning the decisions and actions of the workforce to the vision and mission. Creating value for the various stakeholders requires that the value drivers for each is understood and that tensions among stakeholders be anticipated and managed. The ability to pick up on and act on "early warning signals" that threaten the firm's core capabilities, its competitiveness, and stakeholder satisfaction are critical for success.

Marsh, Colin. "Partnership in Mission : an analysis of policy statements of USPG in relation to its mission training College of the Ascension, Selly Oak, Birmingham (1965-1996)." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30445.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis aims to assess the influence of the concept of Partnership in Mission in key policy statement of the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG) in relation to its mission training College of the Ascension, Selly Oak, Birmingham between 1965 and 1996. It will be demonstrated that the concept of Partnership in Mission owes its origins to the theology of Missio Dei, which understands that mission belongs to God and that the church’s role is to participate in God’s mission in the world. Partnership in Mission occurs when churches share resources for mission in mutual and interdependent relationships. The concept challenges the traditional practice of Western missionary agencies of transferring resources in a one-way direction from the West to the rest of the world. Learning to share together in God’s mission across geographical, cultural and theological boundaries is fundamental to the application of Partnership. The thesis examines the extent to which Partnership in Mission influenced decisions of the USPG in relation to the College of the Ascension. Each chapter of the thesis examines a key decision taken by USPG concerning the College of the Ascension between 1965 and 1996. The seven chapters are based on the following decisions: to re-open the College in 1965; to receive students from across the Anglican Communion in 1969; to review missionary selection and training policy in 1974; to inaugurate a College Advisory Group in 1978; to initiate a Bursaries Programme in 1982; to extend the college facilities in 1989; and to form a United College with the Methodist Church in 1996. Each chapter examines the minutes of USPG committees which outline the decision, and the background reports which illuminate the process taken to formulate the committee resolution.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
Vision and mission statements are believed to play an important role in organisations in their quest to provide clear and concise guidance to their ambitions and purpose. This is especially true for not-for profit organisations as they do not have a ‘bottom-line’ to drive performances and other strategic decisions. Although several studies have been conducted on the effect of effective vision and mission statements on organisations, there is no evidence of a study having been conducted on secondary schools in the Helderberg area, to the best of the researcher’s knowledge. The aim of this study was to explore the extent to which the vision and mission statements are communicated and used within the two secondary schools as part of their decision making processes, especially by the principals of these schools. In order to sufficiently address the implementation, communication and integration of the vision and mission statements in the secondary schools, the following research questions were formulated: • What is the level to which the school’s mission and vision statements are used by its principals to guide decision-making processes and the setting of goals and ambitions? • How well are the school’s mission and vision statements communicated to – and understood by its stakeholders? • How to properly create and integrate the school’s vision and mission statements in order to ensure improved and sustainable academic performances This study explores the levels of communication of the vision and mission statements most notably by the principals to the rest of the school’s stakeholders and the integration of these statements into the daily decision making processes. Furthermore, the study investigates the review process of these statements and whether the principals embody the values and visions of their respective schools. From the analysis of the findings, it was clear that these statements are still largely unknown within the two schools, as only 54% of the correspondents have ever seen these statements. The views were varied about whether principals have communicated the vision and mission statements to the stakeholders of the schools. According to Sherman (2001: 24) the ability to clearly and concisely communicate the vision and mission of the organisation is a critical characteristic of leadership. The study also concluded that the statements appeared to not have been fully understood, embodied and communicated by both the principals interviewed. The lack of a clear strategy and the focus on solving crisis issues at the schools were evident during the interviews with both principals. This research findings were analysed, concluded and recommendations made on the factors that could assist the establishment, communication and integration of the vision and mission statements within secondary schools within the Helderberg area.

Despite site-based decison making (SBDM) educational mandates, research determined the virtual exclusion of parents, family, and/or home as co-authoritative voice in Texas public school district mission statements. Qualitative analysis determined six parent roles within 155 inclusive mission statements through rhetorical deconstruction, a text-based grammatical evaluation procedure; quantitative analysis determined no significance between inclusive and exclusive districts in factors of size, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. The implications of this study add further support to the growing parental insistence for greater educational decision-making options: ie., home schooling, voucher system, and charter schools.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 87-91.
Given the political changes in South Africa in recent years, an exploration of any particular set of education-related documents, as far as the impossibilities/possibilities they allow for action, is made tempting and promising. This is what the present study takes on; more particularly, a discourse analysis (disciplined reading) of school mission statements. The results in general reveal support for both a traditional and a liberal/progressive orientation to schooling and control, arguably limiting the possibility of realising democracy within the school, and increasing the likelihood of punitive techniques of control. One of the most evident ideals seems to be of providing for the nation's person-power needs, and of ensuring later financial security for the individual. Finally, it was found that at well resourced schools, there is a resistance to transformation and in particular social equality, accompanied by support for a liberal capitalist system. In comparison, at less resourced schools there is less support for a capitalist system, but rather a desire for socioeconomic transformation.
