The Polish Jesuit Maksymilian Ryłło (1802-1848) participated in several missionary endeavors undertaken by the Church in nineteenth century and entrusted to the Society of Jesus. Besides his missions in Middle East in 1836-1837 and 1839-1841, he was also one of the protagonists of an exploratory trip to North East Africa started in 1847 from Egypt and directed south. Abstract This book chapter was to tackle the mission of International Laboratory for Research on Animal Disease (ILRAD): discuss AAT and East Coast fever. As a result, a large body of research on AAT was conducted over 30 years: genetics, breeding and immunology research. This chapter reviews the earlier field work of ILRAD followed by that of International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) after 1994 in East and West Africa, including the engagement of those institutions with regional and global initiatives. Looking to the future, AAT is likely to remain a priority constraint for African livestock. We now have approaches that are highly effective at reducing the impact of AAT, either singly or in combination. We also understand better the challenges of adoption of even economically attractive strategies and how the changing dynamics of AAT may lead to future opportunities for optimized control.

The Scottish diasporas to Africa occurred in different forms in the varied regions of Africa. There was some settlement in East and Central Africa, but in West Africa and elsewhere in the continent the prime influence, for good or ill, was through Christian missions and their educational, ethnological and medical work. In East Africa, Scots had a major role in the imperial take-over through the foundation and personnel of the Imperial British East Africa Company, while in South and Central Africa, Scots had profound effects upon the economic, educational, scientific and religious dimensions of white rule. Scots, however, were also instrumental in some places in supporting the emergence of African nationalism.

Abstract By the beginning of World War I, African Methodism’s unique moment in the intertwined history of the United States and South Africa had more or less passed. Henry Turner, the driving force behind the AME Church’s African outreach, went to his rest in 1915, the same year as Benjamin Tanner, his great antagonist. Questions about Africa and its relationship to African American life, which had consumed AME councils for the better part of a century, were crowded aside by a host of concerns closer to home—by war, by renewed spasms of racial violence, and by a massive northward migration that depopulated whole swaths of the church’s southern heartland. While AME leaders continued to endorse African missions and occasionally to support them financially, Africa was clearly becoming a sideshow within the church. In the face of the East St. Louis race riot of 1917 and the explosion in Chicago two years later, it was hard to see Africa as the primary challenge for black Christianity, the field on which the future of the race would be determined.

Abstract:

This study sought to assess the contribution of Zimbabwean uniformed women in peacekeeping in Africa with specific reference to Liberia and East Timor. The study found out that despite being a key ingredient for successful operational impact in any peacekeeping mission, the contribution was not greatly appreciated due to a variety of factors. The study also noted that uniformed women peacekeepers were grappling with a plethora of challenges ranging from language and cultural barriers, a low number of female peacekeepers, gender stereotypes, to a non-family status of most United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions. The study concludes that UN member states should vigorously conduct more sustained recruitment of women into national institutions such as military, police and prisons and correctional service to increase the pool of personnel for subsequent deployment to peacekeeping duties. The UN should look at the possibility of reviewing some of its policies to reduce the negative impact caused by the prolonged absence of peacekeepers away from their families.

Global participation in research statistics indicate that the engagement in the conception or the creation of new knowledge, products, processes, methods, and systems in regions such as Africa, South-East Asia and South America is fairly limited. This includes the participation of researchers at a postgraduate level. Increased quality of research and the potential for research to lead to new and innovative knowledge, addressing development challenges through internationalisation of higher education has been widely argued. The chapter will attempt to develop insight to advance postgraduate intra-Africa research from a South African perspective. Statistics of current and completed postgraduate research in Africa will be presented. These statistics will be contextualised in the internationalisation of higher education. Concomitantly, postgraduate research as a strategy to advance internationalisation in general and internationalisation of research in particular will also be discussed. The role of higher education internationalisation in developing a collaborative research culture across Africa will also be explored. The chapter will highlight key strategies for the development of an inclusive research culture through research skills development, at a postgraduate level. The arguments to advance higher degree internationalisation will focus on international virtual engagement as a facilitator of research collaboration. The benefits of enhanced supervisory capacity through virtual means will also be explored. Furthermore, additional facilitators for intra-Africa research collaboration will be presented together with institutional missions for advancing research on the African continent.

Abstract:

The process of surface erosion due to particle collision has been the focus of a number of investigations with regards to gas turbine engines, aircraft, reentry missiles, pipelines carrying coal slurry, etc. Recently, increased interest in wind energy by countries in the Saharan regions of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) brings about some concern about leading edge erosion of wind turbines operating under such dusty conditions. Leading edge erosion can have a detrimental impact on the extracted energy as it changes the blade surface roughness causing premature/unpredictable separation.
