ABSTRACT: Electroacoustic music is turning more and more to the sound diffusion techniques. Multichannel sound systems like BEAST and SARC are built so that the musician can independently control the intensity of several audio channels. This feature provides the possibility of creating several sound diffusion scenarios, i.e., immersion and the possibility of movement around the audience. The developed system (MIAUDIO) is a real-time sound diffusion system currently able to mix up to 8 audio input channels through 32 outputs channels. A hardware solution was adopted using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to perform the mixture. The analogue audio signals are conditioned, converted to digital format by several analogue-to-digital converters and then sent to the FPGA that is responsible to perform the mixing algorithm. The host computer connects to the FPGA via USB and is responsible for supplying the parameters that define the audio mixture. Being so, the user has control over the input levels through the output channels independently so that sound movement is possible. MIAUDIO was successfully implemented with a low-cost solution (<500€) when compared with similar systems. The developing time was relatively short and resources of the host computer operating system are almost not occupied because the mixture is done completely in FPGA. All the channels were tested using Precision One system with very good results.

Full textThis document constitutes the report of the traineeship accomplished at the audio and image producer Digital Mix Música e Imagem, Lda., in the contex of the nonteaching component of the Master Degree on Musical Arts. The report describes the activities followed and produced in the internship, in the context of audio postproduction, as well as the individual projects produced in the scope of audio postproduction and musical production. The aim of the study is to compare the methodologies used in the shaping of the sound object, enphasizing the comparison of the mixing processes in function of genre, concretely to this study audiovisual products and music. The report features the discription of the projects followed and produced in the internship, complemented by the literature review refering to the field of audio postproduction and musical production, and the reflexion of the acquired results. It is concluded that the processes and elements that characterizes the mixing are similar in audiovisual and musical objects, and the work of audio production represents the fusion of the techniques, the audition by the audio professional, and the unique creativity of each producer. The achieved results are still superficial in relation to expected, being necessary more research work and the practice of audio postproduction to be able to define more accurately the differentiation of the mixing process according to the sound object.

Full textIn an industry usually lead by commercial goals and audience leadership, professionals of audio department take on more and more responsibilities. Nowadays radio and television do not just operate in the traditional media for which they were initially conceived. They are keeping up with technological advances and multiplatform consuming habits. The following report presents techniques, strategies and challenges of audio operations across all stages of content production in the realm of radio and television, either at broadcast facilities or at remote locations, having as reference the academic internship held at the Portuguese public media service, at Centro de Produção do Norte of Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). The report is structured in four parts – the first addresses the internship in radio, the workspaces and equipment used there, the production of non-linear and live content of news reports and entertainment and lastly the experience of two remote productions; the second presents a comparative study about telecommunication solutions used in radio productions. My approach is based on the overview of use cases and the analysis of audio recordings captured for this study; in the third part I present the experience of the internship in television, the challenges of capturing vocal and musical content, the production of newscasts like the ones broadcasted in RTP3, the production of entertainment talk shows like the iconic “Praça da Alegria” broadcasted in RTP1, the remote production of a religious event and activities in television’s audio post-production department, lastly the impact of Covid-19 in broadcast audio operations at Centro de Produção do Norte. In this report I also present some of the technological advances in remote productions by using IP codecs and production of podcasts and radio shows in visual radio format.
