Abstract:
Starting in the 1960s, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) became one of the most visible points of entry in America for the so-called “Swiss-style,” a distinctive, modernist approach to graphic design. Three women were largely responsible for its success: Therese Moll, Jacqueline Casey, and Muriel Cooper. While Casey and Cooper have begun to get their due, Moll—a visiting designer from Basel—remains almost unknown. This article examines why MIT provided such fertile ground for this style, before it became the lingua franca of corporate modernism, and how, by the 1980s, it traveled

Abstract:
This chapter examines the economic returns to funding scientific research. The Bank of Boston did an analysis of the economic impact of scientific research on the local economy. Boston has eight major research universities: Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Boston College, Brandeis, Northeastern, U-Mass Boston, and Tufts. These eight universities employed 51,000 people and provided indirect employment for 37,000, not counting those workers employed by the university hospitals, themselves massive employers. Every year, 32,000 students graduated from these eight universities, many of whom remained in the local economy. Each year, the universities produced over 250 patents, over 280 commercial licenses, and roughly forty start-ups. Altogether, the universities contributed $7.4 billion to the regional economy. To pay for this, the federal government provided $1.5 billion in research contracts and grants. This is a 393 percent rate of return on the federal government's investment.

Abstract:
The opening section of the book describes the relationship between the first edition and the second, written more than thirty years apart, which document the author’s experiences as the elementary-school music teacher at an inner-city school in Boston, Massachusetts. The school partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in a professional development and research project. The author also describes her role as an academic at MIT and relates it to her present university position and to her lifelong work as a music educator. The conversational style of the opening section foreshadows the remaining chapters and the retrospective approach that is taken throughout, as the author explores why the pedagogy described in the first edition has endured so well over the years, not only in terms of her classroom-teaching experiences but also in her role as a preservice educator and music-education researcher.

Abstract:
Although photocatalytic chemistry has been the subject of intense interest recently, the rate of these reactions is often slow due to the limited penetration of light into typical reaction media. Peter H. Seeberger at the Max-Planck Institute for Colloids and Surfaces in Potsdam and the Free University of Berlin showed (Chem. Sci. 2012, 3, 1612) that Ru(bpy)32+-catalyzed reactions such as the reduction of azide 1 to 2 can be achieved in as little as 1 min residence time using continuous flow, as opposed to the 2 h batch reaction time previously reported. The benefits of flow on a number of strategic photocatalytic reactions, including the coupling of 3 and 4 to produce 5, was also demonstrated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 4144) by Corey R.J. Stephenson at Boston University and Timothy F. Jamison at MIT. In this case, a reaction throughput of 0.914 mmol/h compares favorably with 0.327 mmol/h for the batch reaction. Professor Seeberger has also reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 1706) a continuous-flow synthesis of Artemisinin 7, a highly effective antimalarial drug, starting from dihydroartemisinic acid 6. The conversion occurs by a sequence of photochemical oxidation with singlet oxygen, acidic Hock cleavage of the O–O bond, and oxidation with triplet oxygen, a process calculated to be capable of furnishing up to 200 g/day per reactor. A scalable intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of 8 to produce 9 was reported (Tetrahedron Lett. 2012, 53, 1363) by Matthias Nettekoven of Hoffmann-La Roche in Basel, Switzerland. Stephen L. Buchwald at MIT developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 5355) a flow process for the enantioselective β-arylation of ketones that involved lithiation of aryl bromide 10, borylation, and rhodium-catalyzed conjugate addition to cycloheptenone. For continuous flow production of enantioenriched alcohols such as 14, Miquel A. Pericás of the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia developed (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 1816) the robust polystyrene-supported aminoalcohol 13 for diethylzinc addition to aldehydes. Professor Jamison found (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 568) that flow chemistry provides a convenient and reliable solution to the reduction of esters to aldehydes with DIBALH (e.g., 15 to 16) that occurs rapidly and without the usual problem of overreduction.

Abstract:
The Prins cyclization is a powerful approach for the construction of oxygen-containing heterocycles. B.V. Subba Reddy at the Indian Institute of Technology has reported (Tetrahedron Lett. 2012, 53, 3100) an approach to 2,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octanes 2 by way of a tandem Prins reaction/intramolecular acetalization of the diol 1 and a variety of aldehydes. Christine L. Willis of the University of Bristol utilized (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 3901) nontraditional γ, δ-unsaturated alcohols 3 for a Prins-type strategy to access bicyclic heterocycles 5, while Zhenlei Song of Sichuan University employed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 5367) a bis(silyl) homoallylic alcohol 7 in the synthesis of structures such as 8, corresponding to the B ring of the bryostatins. In a mechanistically related process, the conversion of unsaturated ketones 9 to tetrahydropyranyl products 11 by treatment with a boronic acid 10 and triflic anhydride was described (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 1187) by Aurelio G. Csáky at the Universidad Complutense in Spain. A powerful approach to heterocycles is via the ring expansion of smaller, and especially strained, ring systems. Jon T. Njardarson of the University of Arizona has been exploring such strategies and has reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 5675) the conversion of vinyl oxetanes to dihydropyrans via catalysis by transition metals or Brønsted acids. The use of a chiral catalyst such as 13 allowed for the enantioselective conversion of divinyl oxetane 12 to enantioenriched dihydropyran 14. Meanwhile, Amir H. Hoveyda at Boston College and Richard R. Schrock at MIT have developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 2788) a highly reactive and stereoselective catalyst for the ring-opening/cross-metathesis of several ring systems such as 15 with enol ethers. Notably, reactions occur rapidly (e.g., 10 min) using as little as 0.15 mol% catalyst. An alkynyl cyclopropyl ketone such as 17 can be converted (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 4112) to products 18 by treatment with a gold/silver catalyst mixture, as shown by Zhongwen Wang at Nankai University. Notably, the oxabicyclic ring structure contained within 18 is present in a diversity of natural product structures.

Abstract:
The hymns and psalms of the Congregational minister Isaac Watts circulated in the North American colonies prior to the revivals of the 1730s and’40s. Watts's transatlantic links are clearly evident in his regular correspondence with ministers and academics including Cotton Mather and Benjamin Colman. He gave forty-nine of his own books to Yale and many of these survive. Watts exchanged many letters with Benjamin Colman, pastor in Boston and an overseer of Harvard. Watts has often been regarded as having been first published in America in 1729 when Benjamin Franklin reprinted his Psalms of David. This paper examines two earlier publications of Watts's work, both printed in 1720 in Boston, and Cotton Mather’s reception of Watts’ early work. In so doing, it seeks to understand better Watts's influence in the American colonies before the arrival of George Whitefield and the Great Awakening of mid-century.
