Abstract:

Abstract:
Flavonoid profiles have been determined for 16 species of Mitella and for the two monotypic genera, Bensoniella and Conimitella. With a single exception the profiles are based upon the flavonols kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin. The flavanone eriodictyol was seen in two Japanese species of Mitella. The flavonols exist as a series of 7-O-mono-, 3-O-mono-, 3-O-di-, and 3-O-triglycosides, although not all levels of glycosylation occur in each taxon. 7-O-Methylkaempferol and 7-O-methylquercetin were found in M. nuda and M. diphylla; M. nuda also has isorhamnetin. The flavonoids of M. nuda are unique in the genus, but otherwise the distribution of the pigments does not offer support for Rydberg's view of the species being assigned to four genera or Rosendahl's view that Mitella comprises two sections. The flavonoid profile of Bensoniella oregona clearly distinguishes it from Mitella. Flavonoid data for Conimitella williamsii agree in general with those of a moderately advanced species of Heuchera in agreement with Savile's views on the origin of Conimitella. Our results are discussed in terms of the recent finding that Conimitella and Mitella form natural hybrids.

Abstract:
Abstract Capitulum mitella is an important species in the intertidal ecosystem and in the economy in China. This study explored the genetic diversity and population structure of C. mitella using mitochondrial 16S ribosomal subunit (16S rRNA) gene sequences. The researchers sequenced a 527 bp fragment of 16S rRNA from 390 samples collected from six localities along Western Taiwan Strait and identified 45 distinct haplotypes with an average haplotype diversity (h) of 0.451 and an average nucleotide diversity (π) of 0.00124. The pairwise statistics and AMOVA indicated a lack of significant population structure. The results indicated a recent expansion of the population of C. mitella in the study area. This expansion, combined with the species’ high dispersal capabilities, limited physical barriers, and the influence of oceanic currents, may be the factors contributing to its current phylogeographic structure. This study provides particularly important information for managing and protecting the resources of C. mitella in Southern China.

Abstract:
AbstractCapitulum mitella is a tropical/sub-tropical intertidal barnacle of high economic value. However, no studies have yet focused on the effects of the extrinsic and intrinsic factors that affect the metamorphosis of this species. The current study stored cyprids at room temperature (24–26°C) and low temperature (7°C) and then compared the effects of age and storage temperature on cyprid metamorphosis. The effects of salinity and temperature on cyprid metamorphosis and survival were examined. Results showed the following. (1) Young 0-day cyprids were not competent to metamorphose, and C. mitella cyprids had a pre-competent phase. (2) The cyprid metamorphosis percentage at different storage temperatures with the same age was higher at room temperature than at 7°C. Low temperature storage of cyprids appeared to be unsuitable for C. mitella. The ideal storage time at room temperature for cyprids was 3–5 days. (3) The cyprids could complete metamorphosis at a salinity range of 20–45 mg l−1, and the optimum salinity range for metamorphosis was 25–35 mg l−1. At 15 mg l−1 salinity, the cyprids could survive but failed to metamorphose. (4) The cyprids could survive and complete metamorphosis at 18–36°C, and the optimum temperature range for metamorphosis was 21–33°C. The metamorphosis of C. mitella cyprids can tolerate a wide spectrum of salinity and temperature, which is related to the distribution location, habitat environment and lifestyle. Results of this study may provide a basis for the settlement biology, recruitment ecology and aquaculture of this species.

Abstract:
Background: Capitulum mitella is a widely distributed and ecologically important stalked barnacle that settles extensively on rocky shores. This species contributes to the structural complexity of intertidal habitats and plays a critical role in the marine ecosystem. This study aimed to reveal the genetic diversity and population structure of C. mitella by analyzing the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene. Methods: A 683bp fragment of the COI gene was sequenced from 390 individuals sampled from six localities in Fujian, China. Results: A total of 84 distinct haplotypes were identified through the analysis of 82 polymorphic sites, resulting in an average haplotype diversity (h) of 0.660 and nucleotide diversity (π) of 0.00182. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and pairwise FST statistics showed no significant population structure. Neutrality tests and mismatch distributions provided evidence of recent population expansion for the species. Conclusions: We suggest that the species' high dispersal ability, and ocean currents coupled with limited physical barriers in the region, contribute to its current phylogeographic structure. These findings enhance our comprehension of the genetic diversity and population structure of C. mitella, providing valuable insights for future conservation efforts.

Abstract:
Comparative morphology of the cement delivery apparatus of three lepadomorph barnacles indicates that the lepadid Lepas anatifera is unable to relocate voluntarily, whereas the two scalpellids Pollicipes pollicipes and Capitulum mitella can. Mean relocation speeds of up to 50 μm d−1 were measured for both scalpellids, which are probably underestimates of maximal rates given the absence of a directed stimulus. In the laboratory neither gravity nor unidirectional flow proved effective stimuli in directing scalpellid relocation. The two scalpellid species use quite different mechanisms to effect relocation at a leading edge of the base, although both slough basal material at the trailing edge. It is suggested that basal growth effectively accounts for the mobility of P. pollicipes but C. mitella is likely to employ muscular activity.

Abstract:

Agostino was also an excellent draughtsman and granted a great importance to the graphic medium as a verification and practice instrument. This predilection influenced also his followers: after his death there was a great demand of his drawings, used as ornamental and quadratura's repertoires. They were also used as a mean of study, in fact there is a large amount of copies and exercises in his style, that I have systematically analyzed. Therefore I was able to identify some of the most important followers of Agostino: Domenico Santi, Giacomo Antonio Mannini and Marc'Antonio Chiarini. To assess the influence of Agostino's work on following generations the chalcographic production is also important. I analyzed this production from his four ornamental etchings sets, which have been reprinted several times, even in France. After his death other sets were printed and they were very close to his work. The first one was made by his son, Giuseppe Maria Mitelli, who engraved some of Agostino's drawings. Santi, Buffagnotti, Mannini, Chiarini and several others' sets followed and those also included quadratura and view and this sets were very often re-assembled by editors and collectors. Also contemporary sources discussed the dependence of following generations from Agostino Mitelli's work, it is the case of the unpublished manuscripts of Giovanni Mitelli, the other son of Agostino, that provided a lot of new information.

Abstract:
The PHD thesis entitled: Soft prevention models as a remediation tool for mafia facilitation in the entrepreneurial field. The method of "antimafia compliance by design" analyzes the networks between mafia and economy, trying to identify the mimetic forms of adaptation of the mafia entrepreneur in the area of the legal economy. The selected qualitative research method is based on sociological-legal analysis, that was used to investigate the tools of patrimonial aggression of criminal assets created by Italian legislation to counter the infiltration of the mafia into the economy. The prevention tools of articles 34 and 34 bis of the Anti-Mafia Code were selected, among all criminal and administrative instruments, because they were considered the most suitable to operate on the criminal contamination of the company in a surgical manner, protecting the work and the value of the healthy companies. The sociological-legal effectiveness of these tools was analyzed through the study of 16 cases sampled based on the geographic survey and on the variables of the reference economic sector. At the end of the analysis, the author proposes a “compliance by design model” dedicated to the prevention of mafia infiltration into the economy, according to the canons of business ethics.

Abstract:
Starting from the critics’ observations about the structure of Microcosmi, the essay focuses on the key role played by the love story between the protagonist-narrator and his wife Marisa, a sort of rewriting of Orpheus and Eurydice’s myth. Convergences and variations between the classic vulgate of the myth and the pseudo-rewriting of Microcosmi are highlighted. The essay also focuses on the Indian myth of Savitri and Sátiavan, to understand the source of the many substantial variations and, in particular, the reversal of roles between male and female characters. This myth turns out to be a privileged source for the rewritings of the Orpheus’ myth that are offered by Magris in his Microcosmi.
