Abstract:
A trial was carried out to investigate the effect of limited water supply on leaf area duration (LAD), relative growth rate (RGR), crop growth rate (CGR), and above-ground biomass (AB) of spring maize. The results indicated that the LAD was significantly (p<0.05) increased by 10.6%, 15.4%, 16.9%, 19.3%, 13.4% and 17.0%,12.2%, 19.7%, 18.4%, 20.9% in MI1, MI3, MI4, MI5, CK than MI2 during both 12-leaf stage to heading and heading to silking. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in RGR among all the treatments and check during 6-leaf to 12-leaf stage and silking to middle grain filling, but significant difference occurred during other measured stages. Also, significant difference was found in CGR among some treatments and check during all the measured growth stages. The maximum AB of maize was maintained in CK with 23.0 t ha-1, significantly improved by 16.2%, 16.2%, 22.3% and 41.1%, 35.3% respectively than in MI1, MI4, MI5 and MI2, MI3, and the minimum AB was recorded in MI2 with 16.3 t ha-1.

Abstract:
Evaluation of the efficacy of blue-green algal compounds against the growth of either pathogenic or antagonistic microorganisms as well as their effect on the antagonistic ability of bioagents was studied underin vitroconditions. The present study was undertaken to explore the inhibitory effect of commercial algal compounds, Weed-Max and Oligo-Mix, against some soil-borne pathogens. In growth medium supplemented with these algal compounds, the linear growth of pathogenic fungi decreased by increasing tested concentrations of the two algal compounds. Complete reduction in pathogenic fungal growth was observed at 2% of both Weed-Max and Oligo-Mix. Gradual significant reduction in the pathogenic fungal growth was caused by the two bioagents and by increasing the concentrations of algal compounds Weed-Max and Oligo-Mix. The present work showed that commercial algal compounds, Weed-Max and Oligo-Mix, have potential for the suppression of soil-borne fungi and enhance the antagonistic ability of fungal, bacterial, and yeast bio-agents.

Abstract:
In today’s world vehicles form an important asset to us, without which our life would be incomplete. But, when it comes to the security of our vehicles, we are very helpless. It is of a great concern, especially in metropolitan cities, where these incidents occur each and every day. So, in this paper, I have focussed on the security of vehicles. The setup consists of a mix of software and hardware. In software, I will be using an android application, and in hardware, a Raspberry pi board B+ model, a jaw or a gripper and other hardware devices. This whole system will allow you to connect with your vehicle from anytime, anywhere and confirm it’s security. A vehicle is usually the most expensive and important asset next to a home, so this system enables you to keep this asset at your fingertips using wireless technology. Think of it as a wireless leash to your car.

Full text
Abstract:
Bacteria in biofilms are encased in an extracellular polymeric matrix that limits exposure of microbial cells to lethal doses of antimicrobial agents, leading to resistance. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa, biofilm formation is regulated by cell-to-cell communication, called quorum sensing. Quorum sensing facilitates a variety of bacterial physiological functions such as swarming motility and protease, pyoverdine, and pyocyanin productions. Peptide mix from the marine mollusc, Olivancillaria hiatula, has been studied for its antibiofilm activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Microscopy and microtiter plate-based assays were used to evaluate biofilm inhibitory activities. Effect of the peptide mix on quorum sensing-mediated processes was also evaluated. Peptide mix proved to be a good antibiofilm agent, requiring less than 39 μg/mL to inhibit 50% biofilm formation. Micrographs obtained confirmed biofilm inhibition at 1/2 MIC whereas 2.5 mg/mL was required to degrade preformed biofilm. There was a marked attenuation in quorum sensing-mediated phenotypes as well. At 1/2 MIC of peptide, the expression of pyocyanin, pyoverdine, and protease was inhibited by 60%, 72%, and 54%, respectively. Additionally, swarming motility was repressed by peptide in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that the peptide mix from Olivancillaria hiatula probably inhibits biofilm formation by interfering with cell-to-cell communication in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Abstract:
Due to their antimicrobial and antiviral activity potential in vitro, polyphenols are gaining a lot of attention from the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. A novel antiviral and antimicrobial approach could be based on the use of polyphenols obtained from natural sources. Here, we tested the antibacterial and antiviral effect of a mix of polyphenols present in natural almond skin (NS MIX). The antimicrobial potential was evaluated against the standard American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains, by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Herpes simplex virus type I was used for the antiviral assessment of NS MIX by plaque assay. Furthermore, we evaluated the expression of viral cascade antigens. NS MIX exhibited antimicrobial (MIC values of 0.31–1.25 mg/ml) and antiviral activity (decrease in the viral titer ** p < 0.01, and viral DNA accumulation * p < 0.05) against Staphylococcus aureus and HSV-1, respectively. Amongst the isolated compounds, the aglycones epicatechin and catechin showed the greatest activity against S. aureus ATCC 6538P (MIC values of 0.078–0.15 and 0.15 mg/ml, respectively), but were not active against all the other strains. These results could be used to develop novel products for topical use.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Game industry is increasing and developing its possibilities by creating new trends, making it more attractive for users and offering way more than just a spending-time activity.  This bachelor thesis presents a brief study about games which are designed and based on real geographical places. This study argues the question about playing games created after real cities and if this can attract gamers to the real destination which a particular game is based on. The aim of this paper is to see if there is a link between tourism and game industry. The methods used for this study are qualitative, in form of interviews, as well as quantitative. The quantitative study is performed with a survey answered by players, and what effect that has on the user experience, both in the game, but also in visiting real destinations. To find out this particular issue, questions about user experience were asked in aim to find out what provokes the desire to visit the physical location. By analyzing collected data, it has come to a conclusion that players are positively affected by the fact that the game they are playing is based on real geographical places.  This conclusion is based on players answers which are reflected by the fact that game felt more real, but also that players took different decision for visiting places during their stay at the destination, which they probably would not do if they did not play those particular games.

Rippy, Daniel S. (Daniel Spensley). "Assessing decision inputs in drug development between small, early stage companies and big pharma : is there is a difference?" Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/42209.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 83-85).
The pipeline productivity challenge facing large, publicly traded pharmaceutical companies, collectively referred to as "Big Pharma," is well known. The unprecedented success Big Pharma achieved over the past few decades in commercializing blockbuster products means that it is now faced with near-term patent expirations on such products, representing billions of dollars in lost sales and profits. In order to maintain its economic momentum, Big Pharma is increasingly relying on the universe of smaller, early stage biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies as a source of new products. Early stage companies may offer Big Pharma something beyond simply more product bets. Several recent consulting studies have shown that economic returns to Big Pharma of products sourced externally are greater than those developed internally, which raises the question: What, if anything, are early stage companies doing differently from Big Pharma in their product development programs? The goal of this thesis is to evaluate product development programs ("projects") and compare qualitatively and quantitatively the decisions for projects at key decision points between early stage pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and Big Pharma. Given that much of the critical discovery and R&D work on pharmaceutical products happens both before and during a product's entry into human clinical trials, this thesis focuses on those areas of the development continuum where R&D plays a central role. The key decision points are therefore: lead candidate selection/optimization, moving a project from pre-clinical trials into Phase I human clinical trials, and moving a project from Phase I to Phase II clinical trials in humans.
(cont.) The thesis tests the hypothesis that small, early stage, publicly traded U.S. & Canadian biotech and pharma firms (Small Pharma) focused on 1-2 therapeutic areas who high levels of homogeneity in their decision making process, number of decision inputs, prioritization processes, and metrics for all three key decision points in the product development process irrespective of whether a product originates inside or outside the company. In comparison, Big Pharma companies will show heterogeneity in these variables for their projects. I have obtained data from primary interviews of industry executives within Big Pharma and Small Pharma firms. The therapeutic areas selected for the early stage company data set are: (1) cancer and autoimmune disease, (2) cardiovascular disease, and (3) infectious disease. The rationale for these therapeutic areas is that there is significant drug development activity taking place in these fields, and there are significant unmet medical needs within them. Additionally, both Big Pharma and Small Pharma companies are developing products in these fields. I compare these data sets statistically using Fisher's exact test and Yates' chi-square test.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates Max Reger's Variations and Fugue on an Original Theme Op. 73, demonstrates the refinement of Reger's composition, and underlines his connection to the great performer Karl Straube. His musical language, dynamic markings and technical problems regarding the tempo, registration and acoustics will be examined by an actual performance in Canterbury Cathedral. Several issues such as cathedral acoustics, mechanical or pneumatic actions and choice of tempi have underpinned this study. Within each variation, the characteristics and techniques of Reger's compositions express his exceptional connection with the art of fugue and, of course, the use of variation technique in the rest of his organ works. The long Introduction falls into five clear sections and is, followed by the wistful mood and resignation of the Original Theme, where the great role of the third bar is often quoted in the course of the variations. Due to the all-pervading chromaticism Op. 73 gives the impression of being completely pantonal. Canterbury Cathedral organ's electro-pneumatic action and acoustics are close to the Leipzig Sauer instrument, and it seems well capable of meeting the challenges of control, polyphonic harmony, mystery and chromatic moods of Op. 73. Approaching the interpretation of Reger's highly demanding Variations and Fugue on an Original Theme Op. 73 through formal analysis and the complicated background of early twentieth century performance practice will be the final goal of the live performance.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore ‘how children are’ in a case study of Achuar communities of the mid Corrientes River region, in the Peruvian Amazon. An interdisciplinary approach, drawing on anthropological, epidemiological and sociological methodologies, is used to build a multi-dimensional analysis of relations between the physical and social context of the Corrientes River basin and young children’s ‘how-being’. Grounded in a focus on everyday practice in communities and health posts, this analysis highlights intersections and tensions in knowledge about and among inhabitants, interrogating tacit understandings of what it means for children to be ‘healthy’. Inter-related themes of place, food and work are explored using complementary theoretical tools from Said (strategic location and strategic formation), Bourdieu (relational analysis) and Amazonian anthropological theory of conviviality and perspectivism. A concept of ‘how-being’, developed to avoid the assumptions inherent in ‘health’ and ‘well-being’ is introduced and discussed.

AbstractBertrand et al. introduced a model of parameterised systems, where each agent is represented by a finite state system, and studied the following control problem: for any number of agents, does there exist a controller able to bring all agents to a target state? They showed that the problem is decidable and EXPTIME-complete in the adversarial setting, and posed as an open problem the stochastic setting, where the agent is represented by a Markov decision process. In this paper, we show that the stochastic control problem is decidable. Our solution makes significant uses of well quasi orders, of the max-flow min-cut theorem, and of the theory of regular cost functions.

Abstract:
Two frequently used geometries for fixed-valve micropumps are the nozzle-diffuser and Tesla-type valve. However, little work has been done to investigate the relative merits of optimal shapes for each type of valve. In this study 2D steady-state computational fluid dynamics coupled with a formal optimization procedure and experimental evaluation were performed to address this problem. Non-dimensionalization of the problem allowed a comparison of the two valve types independent of physical size, i.e. shape alone was studied. Optimal shapes were found based on maximizing calculated diodicity as a function of Reynolds number in conjunction with a weighting function used to control forward pressure drop. The optimal shape for each valve was then compared numerically and experimentally to reference valves similar to those reported in the literature. The optimal shape for each valve type was found to be significantly different from the reference shape and exhibited significantly improved performance. Both valve types achieved a maximum diodicity of approximately two in the range of Reynolds number 0 ≤ Re ≤ 2000. The optimal Tesla-type valve was characterized by a large return loop and shallow return loop angle. The optimal nozzle-diffuser was characterized by a very long diffuser section that prevented flow separation in the forward flow direction along with increased wall shear stress in the reverse flow direction. The diodicity vs Reynolds number curve for the Tesla-type valve monotonically increased, while the nozzle-diffuser exhibited a local maximum in the mid-Reynolds number range. These characteristics may play an important role when valve size is determined to maximize resonant behavior of a micropump. Thus they influence numerous pump design criteria such as target flow rate-pressure characteristics and overall pump size.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the theme of the relevance of IS research. Based on recent experiments and experiences in the borderland between research and practice and politics we suggest some additions to the discussion of the IS research relevance in Fitzgerald (2001). One addition concerns relevance to whom, where we suggest considering a regional relevance, through cultivation of regional IS knowledge networks. Such networks comprise regional knowledge production in collaboration between researchers and practitioners, and results are made public and tested also in other organizations than the research sites. This is closely related to the view of knowledge and research put forward by American pragmatism. A second addition is to complement Fitzgerald’s suggestion to expose researchers to practice with the suggestion to expose practitioners to research. It is just as difficult to learn the ‘true nature’ of research from reading the executive summary in MIS Quarterly as it is to learn the ‘true nature’ of practice from a couple of interviews with practitioners. A regional IS knowledge network is an excellent opportunity for such double exposure.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper describes the development and implementation of a computerized knowledge-based system (SmartMix) that provides assistance to concrete mix designers by automatically generating designs of concrete mixes. These concrete mixes can be used for the construction of power plants, buildings, bridges, etc. The generation of designs by SmartMix is based on current design practices and heuristic rules. SmartMix incorporates current empirical data and its knowledge base can be expanded to include data gathered in the future. SmartMix is a fully operational system and has been designed taking into account the existence of several concrete plants geographically distributed that produce concrete mixes. This is an important consideration because different materials will be available depending on the geographic location of a particular plant. The mix design provided by SmartMix addresses the specific requirements and characteristics of the concrete plant that is to produce it. SmartMix was built using a knowledge-based systems environment called Smart Elements from Neuron Data. The system’s domain expertise consists of heuristic knowledge, statistical information and intelligent objects. The system has improved the reliability and consistency of the new concrete mix designs and has reduced dramatically the time and cost associated with the design of concrete mixes with respect to the manual process. The development of SmartMix was completed in 1995 as a result of a Joint Research Venture project between Pildysh Engineering Inc. and the Alberta Research Council. SmartMix has been in use since the fall of 1995 and is currently being used by Pildysh Engineering Inc. as a primary tool for the design of concrete mixes. Substantial cost savings and quality improvement have been achieved as a result of the implementation of SmartMix.

Abstract:
For 45 years TN International has been involved in the radioactive materials transportation field. Since the beginning the spent nuclear fuel transportation has been its core business. During all these years TN International, now part of AREVA, has been able to anticipate and fulfill the needs for new transport or storage casks designed to fit the nuclear industry evolutions. A whole fleet of casks able to transport all the materials of the nuclear fuel cycle has been developed. In this presentation we will focus on the casks used to transport the fresh and used MOX fuel. To transport the fresh MOX BWR and PWR fuel, TN International has developed two designs of casks: the MX 6 and the MX 8. These casks are and have been used to transport MOX fuel for French, German, Swiss and in a near future Japanese nuclear power plants. A complete set of baskets have been developed to optimize the loading in terms of integrated dose and also of course capacity. MOX used fuel has now its dedicated cask: the TN112 which certificate of approval has been obtained in July 2008. This cask is able to transport 12 MOX spent fuel elements with a short cooling time. The first loading of the cask has been performed in September 2008 in the EDF nuclear power plant of Saint-Laurent-des-Eaux. By its continuous involvement in the nuclear transportation field, TN International has been able to face the many challenges linked to the radioactive materials transportation especially talking of MOX fuel. TN International will also have to face the increasing demand linked to the nuclear renaissance.

"Effect of Prestressing Wire Indentation Type on the Development Length and Flexural Capacity of Pretensioned Concrete Crossties." In 2015 Joint Rail Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/jrc2015-5739.

Full text
Abstract:
Load tests were conducted on pretensioned concrete prisms cast with 13 different 5.32-mm-diameter prestressing wire types that are used in the manufacture of pretensioned concrete railroad ties worldwide. The tests were specifically designed to evaluate the development length and bonding performance of these different reinforcements. The prestressing wires were denoted “WA” through “WM” and indentation types included smooth, spiral, chevron, diamond, and 2-dot and 4-dot. Four wires were embedded into each concrete prism, which had a 3.5″ (88.9 mm) × 3.5″ (88.9 mm) square cross section. The wires were initially tensioned to 7000 pounds (31.14 KN) and gradually de-tensioned when the concrete compressive strength reached 4500 psi (31.03 Mpa). A consistent concrete mixture with type III cement, water-cement ratio of 0.32 and a 6-in. slump was used for all prisms. Prisms were tested in 3-point-bending at different spans to obtain estimations of the development length of each type of reinforcement. Two identical 69-in.-long (175.26 cm) prisms were load tested, at both ends, for each reinforcement type evaluated. First prisms were tested at 20-in. (50.8 cm) from one end and 13-in. (33.02 cm) from the other end, whereas the second prisms were loaded at 16.5-in. (41.9 cm) from one end and 9.5-in. (24.13 cm) from the other end. Thus, a total of 52 load tests (13 wire types × 4 tests each) were conducted in this study. During each test, a concentrate load with the rate of 300 lb/min (1334 N/min) was applied at mid-span until failure occurred, and values of load, mid-span deflection, and wire end-slip were continuously monitored and recorded. Plots of load-vs-deflection were then compared for prisms with each wire type and span, and the maximum sustained moment was also calculated for each test. The load tests revealed that there is a very large difference in the development length of the different wire types currently used in the manufacture of pretensioned concrete railroad ties. The results imply that there would also likely be large differences in the reserve capacity (beyond first cracking) for pretensioned concrete crossties fabricated with these different reinforcements.

Abstract:
We have investigated the molecular basis of platelet:fibrin binding by studying interactions between platelets and protofibrils, soluble two-stranded polymers of fibrin which are intermediates on the fibrin assembly pathway. We have taken advantage of the well-characterized anticoagulant properties of the fibrinogen degradation product, fragment D, to prepare solutions of short protofibrils, composed of fewer than twenty fibrin monomer molecules per polymer. Fibrin protofibrils bound to ADP-activated platelets in a time- and concentration-dependent process which was effectively blocked by excess unlabelled fibrinogen, i.e. the binding was specific and appeared to involve a common receptor. ADP-stimulated cells bound approximately 3 micrograms of fibrin protofibrils/108 platelets, compared to 4 micrograms of fibrinogen/108 cells, following a 30 min incubation period at room temperature. The apparent first order rate constant for fibrin protofibril binding was found to be five-fold slower than that measured for fibrinogen. Two monoclonal antibodies directed against the glycroprotein Ilbtllla complex inhibited the binding of fibrin protofibrils and fibrinogen in a similar, concentration-dependent manner, providing strong evidence for a common receptor. Neither fibrin protofibrils nor fibrinogen bound to -Glanzmann’s thrombasthenic platelets, further supporting the hypothesis that fibrinogen and fibrin bind to a common platelet receptor present on the glycoprotein IIb:IIIa complex. The specificity of these interactions was examined with transmission electron microscopy, which clearly showed thin fibers of lengths up to 150 nm attached to the surface of normal, stimulated platelets. Immunogold electron microscopy using rabbit anthihuman fibrinogen as the first stage antibody verified identity of the surface bound molecules and the immunogold distribution paralleled that observed with the fibrin/fibrinogen molecules alone. Contacts between the ends of the fibers and the platelets were frequently observed, but lateral contacts were also evident

Abstract:
Renewable energy and natural gas are displacing coal and nuclear power in many parts of the world as sources of electricity. While, the environmental benefits of such changes seem clear, the impact on worker safety, especially in developed nations is less clear. Coal mining is a relatively dangerous occupation, though one that has grown significantly safer in recent decades. Manufacturing and installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) power may pose less risk to workers on a per hour basis, but the number of worker hours necessary to generate a Megawatt-hour of electricity is currently higher for solar PV than it is for coal-generated power. The implications for the overall occupational burden of accidental deaths and injuries has not been previously detailed. This paper presents the results of a Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis for changes in total worker injuries and injury rates under different assumptions for the future energy mix in developed nations. Projections from the Energy Information Agency (EIA) and other organizations together with documented productivity gains for the various energy industries provide test cases for this analysis. The analysis indicates that future occupational fatality and injury burden of the energy sector is highly dependent on improvements in safety in the expanding industries, while specific projections on the share of specific technologies is less critical. This result highlights the need to invest in occupational risk mitigation in these industries.

Full text
Abstract:
The identification of part families and machine groups that form the cells is a major step in the development of a cellular manufacturing system. The primary input to cell formation algorithms is the machine-part incidence matrix, which is a binary matrix representing machining requirements of parts in various part families. One common assumption of these cell formation algorithms is that the product mix remains stable over a period of time. In today’s world, the market demand is being shaped by consumers, resulting in a highly volatile market. This has given rise to a class of products characterized by low volume and high variety, which presents engineers with lots of problems and decisions in the early stages of product development. This can have an adverse effect on manufacturing like high investment in new machinery and material handling equipment, long setup times, high tooling costs, increased intercellular movement and excessive scrap which increases the cost without adding any value to the parts. Any change to the product mix results in a change in the machine-part incidence matrix, which may change the part families and machine groups, which form the cells. The manufacturing system needs to be flexible in order to handle large product mix changes. This paper discusses the impact of product mix variations on cellular manufacturing and presents a methodology to incorporate these variations into an existing cellular manufacturing setup.

Abstract:
This article provides estimates of the effective tax rates in Ireland for the 1995-2017 period. We use these aggregate tax indicators to compare the developments in the Irish tax policy mix with the rest of the European Union countries and investigate any potential relation with Ireland’s macroeconomic performance. Our findings show that distortionary taxes, e.g. on factors of production, are significantly lower while less distortionary taxes, e.g. on consumption, are higher in Ireland than most European countries. Thus, the distribution of tax burden falls relatively more on consumption and to a lesser extent on labour than capital; while in the EU average the norm is the opposite. The descriptive analysis indicates that this shift in the Irish tax policy mix is correlated with the country’s strong economic performance.

Full text
Abstract:
New evidence suggests that over four months after the closure of early childhood development (ECD) programmes on 18 March 2020, the ECD sector was likely to be operating at less than a quarter of its pre-lockdown levels. Of the 38 percent of respondents from the new NIDS-CRAM survey reporting that children aged 0-6 in their households had attended ECD programmes before the lockdown in March, only 12 percent indicated that children had returned to these programmes by mid-July, well after programmes were allowed to reopen. Using these findings, we estimate that just 13 percent of children aged 0-6 were attending ECD programmes by mid-July to mid-August compared to 47 percent in 2018. The last time that ECD attendance rates were as low as this was in the early 2000s. At this point it is not yet clear what proportion of these declines are only temporary, or whether there will be a lasting impact on ECD enrolment in the country. This dramatic contraction in the ECD sector relates to prohibitive costs to reopening ‘safely’ imposed by the regulatory environment, coupled with shocks to the demand side for ECD programmes (both in terms of reduced household incomes and parent fears of children contracting COVID-19). When viewed from a broader socio-economic lens, the threat of ECD programme closures across the nation will have impacts beyond ECD operators to the lives of millions of children, millions of households and millions of adults who rely on these ECD services. A swift intervention by government is necessary to save this important sector and limit the ripple effect of programme closures on multiple layers of society.

Abstract:
In Illinois, hot-mix asphalt overlaid concrete pavements typically exhibit reflective cracking of joints and cracks from the pavement below, resulting in shortened life and maintenance issues. Over the years, various patching, fabric, and crack and seat techniques were attempted with few positive results. This led to more aggressive techniques to eliminate the slab action of the concrete pavement where the pavement would be broken or rubblized into pieces typically less than 12 inches. Since the first rubblizing project in 1990, policy, procedures, and specifications have evolved to the point that rubblization is the mainstream option in dealing with problematic concrete pavements. This report summarizes the performance of several interstate rubblizing projects in Illinois by analyzing available data in Illinois Department of Transportation’s pavement management system. Condition rating survey data allowed the serviceability of these projects to be evaluated by surface mix types and asphalt performance grades. Traffic in the form of 18,000 lb equivalent single axle loads was determined for the projects to evaluate fatigue and rutting as well as compare section performance to the design procedure. The research team reviewed plans, design procedures, and specifications to determine best practices and identify where improvements might be made. Data showed that the use of stone matrix asphalt surface mixtures and mixes using PGXX-28 asphalt binders provides improved performance. Overall, rubblizing has shown good to excellent performance. To provide additional life with improved performance, recommendations include adopting softer asphalt grades, increasing the use of stone matrix asphalt, and improving procedures for protecting culverts.

Abstract:
In the aerospace industry, competition is high and the need to ensure safety and security while managing costs is paramount. Furthermore, stakeholders—who gain the most by working together—do not necessarily trust each other. Now, mix that with changing enterprise technologies, management of historical records, and customized legacy systems. This issue touches all aspects of the aerospace industry, from frequent flyer miles to aircraft maintenance and drives tremendous inefficiency and cost. Technology that augments, rather than replaces, is needed to transform these complex systems into efficient, digital processes. Blockchain technology offers collaborative opportunities for solving some of the data problems that have long challenged the industry. This SAE EDGE™ Research Report by Rhonda D. Walthall examines how blockchain technology could impact the aerospace industry and addresses some of the unsettled concerns surrounding its implementation.

Abstract:
New language technologies are coming, thanks to the huge and competing private investment fuelling rapid progress; we can either understand and foresee their effects, or be taken by surprise and spend our time trying to catch up. This report scketches out some transformative new technologies that are likely to fundamentally change our use of language. Some of these may feel unrealistically futuristic or far-fetched, but a central purpose of this report - and the wider LITHME network - is to illustrate that these are mostly just the logical development and maturation of technologies currently in prototype. But will everyone benefit from all these shiny new gadgets? Throughout this report we emphasise a range of groups who will be disadvantaged and issues of inequality. Important issues of security and privacy will accompany new language technologies. A further caution is to re-emphasise the current limitations of AI. Looking ahead, we see many intriguing opportunities and new capabilities, but a range of other uncertainties and inequalities. New devices will enable new ways to talk, to translate, to remember, and to learn. But advances in technology will reproduce existing inequalities among those who cannot afford these devices, among the world’s smaller languages, and especially for sign language. Debates over privacy and security will flare and crackle with every new immersive gadget. We will move together into this curious new world with a mix of excitement and apprehension - reacting, debating, sharing and disagreeing as we always do. Plug in, as the human-machine era dawns.

Abstract:
Washington, DC is ranked second among cities in terms of highest public transit commuters in the United States, with approximately 9% of the working population using the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrobuses to commute. Deducing accurate travel times of these metrobuses is an important task for transit authorities to provide reliable service to its patrons. This study, using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), developed prediction models for transit buses to assist decision-makers to improve service quality and patronage. For this study, we used six months of Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) data for six Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) bus routes operating in Washington, DC. We developed regression models and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models for predicting travel times of buses for different peak periods (AM, Mid-Day and PM). Our analysis included variables such as number of served bus stops, length of route between bus stops, average number of passengers in the bus, average dwell time of buses, and number of intersections between bus stops. We obtained ANN models for travel times by using approximation technique incorporating two separate algorithms: Quasi-Newton and Levenberg-Marquardt. The training strategy for neural network models involved feed forward and errorback processes that minimized the generated errors. We also evaluated the models with a Comparison of the Normalized Squared Errors (NSE). From the results, we observed that the travel times of buses and the dwell times at bus stops generally increased over time of the day. We gathered travel time equations for buses for the AM, Mid-Day and PM Peaks. The lowest NSE for the AM, Mid-Day and PM Peak periods corresponded to training processes using Quasi-Newton algorithm, which had 3, 2 and 5 perceptron layers, respectively. These prediction models could be adapted by transit agencies to provide the patrons with accurate travel time information at bus stops or online.
