Abstract:
In the Portuguese imagination Florence is justly considered the cradle of modern western civilisation. Seen and admired from the Renaissance on as the new Athens, for the Portuguese it has always represented not only a model of culture and civilisation to take as inspiration, but also and above all the locus amoenus of spiritual and intellectual harmony and balance, dreamed-of and unattainable, that floods and pervades the soul with a vague, nostalgic sentiment of admiration. Evidence of this, now as in the past, are the serried ranks of poets who for centuries have sung its praises and raised it to the rank of myth. This brief anthology proposes only a few of them, among the most renowned of recent generations. In a truly original way these poets have managed to convey to the hearts and minds of their compatriots their own stunned vision of the city, illustrating emotions that cannot fail to move even the Florentines and, in a broader sense, we Italians as a whole. Thus what is offered in these pages, in fine Italian translation, is this mesh of voices, an intimate and enthralling polyphony of city, poet and reader, unfurling in an evocative melody and proposing the legend of Florence in a new light – possibly more authentic and illuminating.

Abstract:
The Allais and Ellsberg paradoxes are presented. Various generalizations of expected utility motivated by these and other paradoxes are discussed, including betweenness preferences, rank‐dependent preferences, multiple prior max‐min preferences, and prospect theory. For betweenness preferences, which include weighted utility and disappointment aversion, an investor’s marginal utility is proportional to a stochastic discount factor. Disappointment averse utility and rank‐dependent utility have first‐order risk aversion. Multiple prior max‐min utility is one way to accomodate the Ellsberg paradox (ambiguity aversion or Knightian uncertainty). The dynamic consistency of updating multiple priors is discussed.

Alexandrova, Anna. Is There a Single Theory of Well-Being? Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199300518.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
A theory of well-being, in the way that philosophers typically pursue it, is a maximally general account of goods noninstrumentally valuable to the agent. These theories purposefully leave out the context of the agent and the benefactor. When these high theories meet counterexamples, philosophers either bite the bullet, make theories more intricate, or combine them with other theories. The latter two reactions move these theories away from measurement and hence away from the goals of science. This chapter argues that to secure value-aptness for science, a single theory that acts as a general vending machine is unnecessary. This is the thesis of well-being variantism. Instead high theories, along with more context-specific mid-level theories, have a place in a toolbox that enables building theoretically motivated constructs for scientific practice.

Meier, Paul F. The Changing Energy Mix. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190098391.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The energy mix is changing, and renewable energy is growing in importance. If you were born before 1989, you lived in a United States where no electricity was generated from either wind or solar power and very little from geothermal and biomass. By 2018, the combined generation from wind and solar had surpassed hydroelectricity. Fourteen states generated more than 10% of their electricity from wind and three generated more than 30%. And bioethanol, produced from corn grain, made up 10% of the US gasoline market. Changes have also occurred in the nonrenewable energy mix. Coal, which was responsible for 53% of the US electricity generation in 1998 is now only 28%, as natural gas has taken the leadership role, surpassing coal in 2015 as the primary energy for producing electricity. Similarly, the world did not see any electricity generation from wind until 1985 and none from solar until 1989. Now solar plus wind generate 7% of the worldwide electricity. The worldwide demand for all energy types is also increasing rapidly, as energy usage has increased 84% over the last twenty years. This book makes a systematic comparison of twelve different energy types to help understand the driving forces for this changing energy mix. Twelve common criteria are used to provide tools to make these comparisons, such as proven reserves, the levelized cost for each energy type, energy balances, environmental issues, and the energy footprint. Proven reserves are also projected for each renewable energy type.

Belgrad, Daniel. Improvisation, Democracy, and Feedback. Edited by George E. Lewis and Benjamin Piekut. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195370935.013.003.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 1960s and 1970s, improvisational artists explored the use of feedback, both as a creative method and a model of the self in relation to its social and physical environment. As an alternative to centralized authority structures, feedback loops could be used to organize decentralized events or activities. The result would be a self-informing system, or autopoiesis. This idea informed the new field of cybernetics and the social philosophy of Paul Goodman and Gregory Bateson. Max Neuhaus’s realization of John Cage’s composition,Fontana Mix—Feed, made use of this structure, as did his later broadcast works,Public SupplyandRadio Net, and the dance form of “contact improvisation” developed by Steve Paxton. In these works, attention to the dynamics of interaction (“deutero-learning”) fostered an improvisational style based on a heightened environmental awareness rather than an exteriorization of the internal psyche, thus pioneering the postmodern, networked self.

Sutyagin, Igor. Russian Military Operations. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198790501.003.0049.

Full text
Abstract:
Russian military operations since 1991 have displayed a high degree of continuity. Being tailored to specific situations, these operations reveal a nearly constant mix of tactics, evolving with time but remaining fundamentally the same. Russia’s operational use of ambiguity is predominantly aimed at impeding or disrupting an adversary’s decision-making process. Meanwhile, the traditional ‘conventional’ tactics are always present in any operation, resulting in the omnipresent mix, described as the ‘hybrid-warfare’ challenge to the West. The long Russian experience in exercising hybrid warfare represents significant accumulated hybrid operational skills, which give the Russian forces a substantial advantage over the West in terms of operational art. Russia’s post-2014 actions against the West involving its military carry all the features of previous military operations, which suggests that warnings about a unilateral ‘new cold war’ waged by Russia are not hollow.

Moreira, Maria E., and Andrew French, eds. Communication in Emergency Medicine. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190852917.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Widely varying patient needs, a wide provider mix, significant power differentials, and a heightened emotional state all contribute to barriers in communication in the medical field and all of these elements are magnified in an emergency department. Communication in Emergency Medicine highlights key challenges to effective communication in Emergency Medicine that may be experienced by healthcare providers, students, nurses, and even hospital administrators. The text addresses these pitfalls by demonstrating how a mix of foundational communication techniques and leadership skills can be used to successfully overcome barriers in information exchange highlighted by real-life clinical scenarios with an emphasis on avoidable pitfalls. Chapters explore principles of communication, patient and family interactions, and communications within and outside of the healthcare system, rounding off with a number of case studies. The approach of utilizing the environment of an emergency department with high stakes conflicts faced every day by medical professionals distinguishes Communication in Emergency Medicine as an ideal resource for Emergency Medicine providers, with lessons which can also be applied in many other settings as well.

Abstract:
Growing up with digital media is an ethical question. This volume examines current developments in the fields of digitalisation, education and the protection of minors in order to critically reflect upon a new set of issues in communication, media and information ethics. The importance of developing autonomy in children growing up in mediatised societies and of balancing autonomy with children´s need for protection (e.g. data protection or privacy) is central to this study. The book addresses the ethical dimensions of a mediatised childhood by exploring issues in surveillance and care, gaming and entertainment as well as reality and virtuality, giving weight to the consequences these practices and issues have for society, politics and education. Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes a number of international projects in various areas: oil and gas; mining projects; conventional power; renewable energy; nuclear power projects; and the infrastructure of public and private partnerships. Oil and gas projects span a broad range of activities from upstream ‘exploration and production’ projects to downstream LNG and petrochemicals projects. The second part of the chapter begins with a brief overview of the current American, UK, French, Japanese, Korean, and Saudi Arabian power markets focusing on current electricity generation mix policies in these markets and the current and future place of conventional power therein. The text then looks at renewable energy projects. These share many of the characteristics of conventional power projects. However, there are certain crucial differences which will impact upon the contractual structure and risk allocation employed in the development of these projects. Nuclear power projects are perhaps the most challenging power/infrastructure projects to develop and finance. The chapter finally provides a discussion of the applicability of project finance principles and disciplines to a unique and challenging segment of the power/infrastructure sector.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter comprises an empirical evaluation of trends in political support within established democracies, to evaluate whether there is indeed a trend toward declining political support in established democracies. Using a variety of comparative data sets, i.e. the World Values Surveys, European Values Surveys, the European Election Studies, and the Eurobarometer surveys, this chapter reevaluates the empirical evidence for declining legitimacy, comparing trends in political support in sixteen established democracies from the mid-1970s to 2015. No consistent evidence is found for declining political support after the mid-1970s. Rather than a clear-cut long-term decline in political support that is apparent across established democracies, there is large variation between countries both in levels and trends of support. These findings call for a critical reappraisal of existing theories of legitimacy decline: how valid are such theories if the predicted outcome, i.e. secular decline of political support, does not occur?

Abstract:
This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. The distinction between diegetic and nondiegetic music and its critiques have become something of an industry in film music studies lately. There are articles, sections of journal issues, conference sessions, and other activities organized on the topic. As I argued inHearing Film(2001), I have never found the terminology particularly useful, though as many have suggested, we can’t throw out all sense of the distinction that the vocabulary tries to describe. The problem, however, amps up exponentially when video games and Web sites are added to the mix. The use of music in “new media” challenges most of film music studies’ assumptions and presumptions, and these new practices demand new approaches and vocabulary. This chapter focuses on the challenges posed to film music studies models by digital media practices.

The publication deals with texts calling for violence and justifies this by religious arguments. It is however not always possible to distinguish, whether these arguments are motivated by religious convictions or whether they are later justifications. In most cases, they are intertwined. The contributions will also deal with criticisms of religious violence. Obviously religious traditions do no lead by consequence to violence but are the result of different interpretations. Smith, Steven C. Music by Max Steiner. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190623272.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
During a seven-decade career that spanned from 19th-century Vienna to 1920s Broadway to the golden age of Hollywood, three-time Academy Award winner Max Steiner did more than any other composer to establish and codify the language of film music. Composers today like John Williams use the same techniques perfected by the classically trained Steiner, in his scores for such motion pictures as Casablanca, King Kong, Gone with the Wind, The Searchers, Now, Voyager, the Astaire-Rogers musicals, and more than two hundred other titles. Steiner’s private life was as tumultuous as the films he scored. Born into an Austrian theatrical dynasty, he became one of Hollywood’s highest-paid composers. But he was constantly in debt, due to financial mismanagement, four marriages, and the actions of his emotionally troubled son. Steiner ended his career in triumph: at age 71, although practically blind, he wrote what Billboard called the most successful instrumental single of the era: “Theme from A Summer Place.” Throughout his chaotic life, Steiner was buoyed by a quick wit and an instinctive gift for melody, as he met and worked with a Who’s Who of artists: Johann Strauss Jr., Richard Strauss, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Oscar Hammerstein, David O. Selznick, Frank Sinatra, Frank Capra, and many more. This first full biography of Steiner brings to life the previously untold story of a musical pioneer and master dramatist who helped create a vital new art form (and multimillion-dollar industry), while writing many of the greatest scores in cinema history.

Full text
Abstract:
This work begins with a question posed by Machiavelli: ‘In what mode a free state, if there is one, can be maintained in corrupt cities; or, if there is not, in what mode to order it.’ The book analyses the different solutions proposed by Machiavelli starting with the hypothesis of the ‘civil principality’, passing through both the definition of the republican ‘civil and free way of life’ and the examination of the history of the Florentine institutions, to two short writings from the years 1520–22. In the Discursus florentinarum rerum and the Minuta di provisione per la riforma dello Stato di Firenze, Machiavelli exposed publicly for the first time, his proposals to bring back republican freedom to Florence after the fall of the first republic and the Medici’s return. The main thesis put forward in this work is that Machiavelli, when he worked for the Medici, was always a committed republican, even if he believed that the city’s constitution needed to change after the fall of Soderini. In the Discursus and in the Minuta Machiavelli proposed a constitution in which the ‘humours’ were forced to mix together in order to generate a new form of ‘equality’ that according to Machiavelli is the main characteristic of a free, just, and stable republic. The aim was not to obtain equilibrium among the parts of the city leaving them unaltered, but to mix them.

Abstract:
This chapter gives an overview of the type of pension system existing in Europe. Contributive and redistributive systems are opposed but the chapter shows that pension systems are more often a mix of both. The chapter shows how these systems have been more or less effective in tackling old age poverty in most countries and it points to the main challenges that these systems are facing, namely population ageing and low labour-force participation. The major reforms that have been implemented to ensure future sustainability of pension systems are presented but a number of additional changes that should be implemented are discussed. The chapter also presents projections for future outcomes and the link between demographic challenges and social security benefits is highlighted.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses some of the short fictional forms that persisted in as well as alongside the novel. These short fictional forms include chapbook and bluebook abridgements, religious tracts, and what would come to be called—by the end of the period covered here—the tale. Together, these forms highlight the dynamic field of writing that comprised the years that span the novel's rise and canonization. As it appeared in stand-alone collections, magazines, and literary annuals, the tale pushed the novel to consolidate its boundaries even as it developed its own mix of features to challenge the novel on its established ground. In the end, however, the novel won out in its generic competition with half-told and mangled tales.
