Abstract:
CARIX is an ion exchange process which usually applies a mixed bed consisting of a weakly acidic and a strongly basic exchanger material. Carbon dioxide is applied as the only chemical for regeneration of the exchangers. As a consequence, the effluent contains only the amount of salt eliminated during the service cycle. CARIX allows a combined partial softening/dealkalisation/sulfate/nitrate of drinking water. A modification of the process uses exclusively a weakly acidic cation exchanger and allows a softening/dealkalisation. The process has been realised for drinking water treatment in five

Ion exchange is used extensively for the removal of ionised impurities found in natural waters. The final stage in the production of ultra pure water is normally a bed of mixed anion and cation exchange resins. Three areas within the operating cycle of a regenerable mixed bed - resin separation, resin mixing and anion exchange kinetics - have been investigated. Complete separation of the two resins by backwashing, prior to chemical regeneration, is necessary to prevent the subsequent release of trace impurities into the purified water. Biofuels are a promising solution to society's quest for sustainable energy. In the transportation sector, biodiesel is the leading alternative diesel fuel currently in use today. However, the current global and domestic production of biodiesel is far below the petro-diesel consumption and demand. To increase the availability of biodiesel in the market, new methods of biodiesel production must be developed to take advantage of the plentiful low quality waste derived feed stocks that currently present problems to biodiesel production using conventional methods. Judging what is and what should be are everyday human activities, and, by understanding how they are done, analysts can explore the issue central to this chapter: that citizens are losing sight of the positive functions of politics and becoming too focused on its unavoidable and undesirable traits. Two aspects of political culture are making it more challenging for citizens to embrace the mixed nature of politics. First, too much fast thinking—intuitively driven cognition processes—is framing the political exchanges between citizens and political elites by citizens leading the former to focus

Clinically recognised cryoprecipitates are predominantly immunoglobulin-containing. In Type 1 cryoglobulinaemia, the precipitate is formed from a monoclonal paraprotein, usually IgG. In Type 2, a monoclonal IgM binds IgG to form a mixed precipitate. Type 3 cryoglobulins do not contain a monoclonal element.Type 1 cryoglobulins are a rare cause of renal disease, but cause a membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) with nephrotic syndrome and haematuria and

In many recent democracies, candidates compete for office using illegal strategies to influence voters. In Hungary and Romania, local actors including mayors and bureaucrats offer access to social policy benefits to voters who offer to support their preferred candidates, and they threaten others with the loss of a range of policy and private benefits for voting the “wrong” way. These quid pro quo exchanges are often called clientelism. How can politicians and their accomplices get away with such illegal campaigning in otherwise democratic, competitive elections? A d.c. voltage as high as 22 kV was applied to the inner electrode, while the heated wall was grounded.
