Abstract:
In the contemporary scene, alongside the crisis of political communication and the traditional forms of participation, the transformation of the formats and languages of telepolitics and the increasingly more widespread access of the citizens to interactive platforms that liberate them from the role of mere spectators of the political debate, have come to assume major significance. This book proposes an approach of meditation and mixed methods research, already validated within the framework of the project «Against political communication. Rethinking participation in the age of the old and new media» (PRIN 2007). The aim is to explore the ways in which political communication is currently exploiting the media ecosystem, and the role of this new media equilibrium in the construction of political concepts and political participation on the part of the citizens.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews qualitative research methods and specifically focuses on educational research as an example thereby explaining the position of educational research within an accessible social research framework. It provides an overview of research paradigms, and relationships between research approaches and methodologies. Furthermore, the chapter compares and contrasts the qualitative and quantitative research methods and illustrates how the mixed methods approach blends these two individual approaches. The key characteristics of the following mixed methods methodological approaches are presented: case studies, evaluation, ethnography, action research, ideology critique, biography/narrative. Selection of the method is discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyses how the three most important valuation approaches – the market approach, the income approach, and the asset based or cost approach – are reflected in the practice of international investment tribunals. After a short description of the theoretical concept of the respective approaches at the beginning, the corresponding cases are presented and analysed in some detail. The discussion shows that also other approaches are applied in the practice of tribunals, such as mixed methods, insurance value, tax value or contract based valuation. Tribunals sometimes also consider additional types of damages, such as loss of reputation, liability to subcontractors, costs for damage limitation, repair and maintenance, as well as costs for pursuing the claim.

Abstract:
This chapter revisits trade-offs that qualitative researchers face when balancing the different expectations of area studies and disciplinary audiences. One putative solution to such trade-offs, mixed-method research, emphasizes the triangulation of quantitative and qualitative methods. CAS, as defined above, essentially encourages a different form of triangulation—the pooling of observations and interpretations across a wider array of cases spanning multiple areas. This kind of triangulation can be facilitated by cross-regional contextualized comparison, a middle-range approach that stands between area-bound qualitative research and (Millean) macro-comparative analysis that brackets out context in search of causal laws. Importantly, this approach relies upon an area specialist’s sensibilities and experience to generate awareness of local complexities and context conditions for less familiar cases. The examples of cross-regional contextualized comparison considered in this chapter collectively demonstrate that engagement with area studies scholarship and the pursuit of disciplinary knowledge can be a positive-sum game.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 begins with the story of the Canadian Futures Study and its growth and change over the 15 years of its research “life span.” To orient the reader to the issues of research on personality and narrative that are the focus of this book, the authors first cover mixed methods, which integrate both qualitative and quantitative approaches to research, and their epistemological and research underpinnings in general. The authors then turn specifically to recent approaches to narrative research, including methods for studying the life story. Broader approaches to developmental methods and longitudinal analyses over time are briefly discussed. The chapter ends with a discussion of the specific research methods used in the collection of data and the analyses of narrative and personality development in the Futures Study.

Full text
Abstract:
Mixed Methods Research (MMR) combines different research methodologies in the same study with the goals of producing better and more profound knowledge of the phenomenon under investigation than use of a single method would achieve. Typically, both quantitative and qualitative approaches are employed in MMR. Music therapy is an example of a complex research area, where MMR can be considered a suitable way to capture and reflect the complexity of practice. There are many ways to understand and conduct MMR and the field is developing quickly. The chapter briefly describes MMR and its latest developments using examples of music therapy research in which MMR has been applied. Though MMR is a welcome addition to the research methodologies in music therapy, it is a challenging type of research as well. For instance, it can be difficult to published mixed method studies as some journals have low tolerance for innovative methodologies.

Palinkas, Lawrence A., and Brittany Rhoades Cooper. Mixed Methods Evaluation in Dissemination and Implementation Science. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190683214.003.0020.

Full text
Abstract:
In reviewing the rapidly growing literature on the use of mixed methods to address important issues confronting the science of dissemination and implementation, the authors make two observations. The first observation is that mixed methods reflect an iterative process of data collection and analysis that involves both inductive and deductive approaches to understanding complex phenomena. Second, this chapter begins with the observation that using mixed methods is more than parallel play involving separate quantitative and qualitative studies. Both the iterative nature of dissemination and implementation science and the likely debate and compromises involved in selection and application of quantitative and qualitative methods in a mixed method design demand attention on the part of the investigators to document and detail the rationale for the selection of methods and the process and outcomes of their use.

Baaij, C. J. W. The Mixed Approach of Current EU Translation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190680787.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
The current EU Translation practices prove to be internally inconsistent and thus less than fully effective. The most important methods of EU Translation, using neologisms for EU legal terminology and maintaining close textual homogeny, are not incompatible as such. Rather, the aims that these methods seek to satisfy turn out to be inconsistent. In terms of Friedrich Schleiermacher’s essay on translation, EU Translation is at once both “receiver-oriented” and “source-oriented.” In view of the contradictory philosophical concepts of language underpinning these translation orientations, EU Translation thus aims to both “foreignize” and “familiarize” the recipients of language versions. The principles of legal integration and language diversity require absolute concordance among the 24 language versions of EU legislation. Yet, different theoretical approaches to translation provide different answers as to what such concordance entails. Improving EU Translation thus lies in settling for either a receiver- or source-oriented approach.
