Building on new insights from organizational economics, management accounting researchers have highlighted how incentive contracts and performance measure choices complement structural arrangements in firms. We discuss how “slow-moving” elements in organizational design, such as the allocation of decision rights to local managers and interdependencies between different parts of the production function, affect the working of incentives and performance measures. We pay attention to the empirical challenges that researchers face in this area and argues that mixed-method approaches in which economic models are combined with empirical evidence can help to build a body of evidence that is robust and admits cross-study accumulation of knowledge. Finally, we illustrate how recent economic models that incorporate other-regarding preferences can help to bridge the gap between economics-based research in management accounting and more traditional approaches that rely on the behavioral sciences.

Mixed mode surveys are defined as surveys that involve mixtures of different contact and response modes. They have become increasingly popular as a way to mitigate problems of coverage and response error related to single mode options. However, differences in survey mode, especially the presence or absence of an interviewer, may influence item response and nonresponse through social desirability, primacy or recency effects, and visual response. This chapter considers the advantages and disadvantages of various modes and of combining modes. Each research design should consider the costs, including “house” costs and costs to the respondent, and benefits of a mixed mode design before implementation.

This chapter considers the organization and delivery of care for osteoarthritis (OA) within the broader context of chronic condition management, and with a specific focus on the current OA literature. It describes factors that have influenced healthcare reforms for people with chronic conditions such as OA, and the development and characteristics of chronic condition models of care. The chapter also examines existing models of care for OA, which are commonly multidisciplinary in nature and situated within primary care, community care, or secondary/tertiary care settings. It summarizes current evidence for the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of OA models of care, acknowledging that limited data are available regarding access and efficiency outcomes. Barriers to the successful development, implementation, and sustainability of OA models of care are discussed, as well as enablers that could facilitate the success of models of care. The chapter also presents points to consider when planning the implementation and evaluation of models of care, such as the development of a program logic, use of theoretical models or frameworks, and careful selection of appropriate research designs (including mixed-methods approaches). Finally, it considers future challenges for OA models of care, particularly the rise of multi-morbidity among patient populations that will necessitate integrated chronic condition management rather than stand-alone OA services. Future models of care may require the design of specific OA modules that can be integrated with generic chronic condition models that address risk behaviour modification and optimize self-management and mental health outcomes.

This article considers two functional data analysis settings where sparsity becomes important: the first involves only measurements at a relatively sparse set of points and the second relates to variable selection in a functional case. It begins with a discussion of two data sets that fall into the ‘sparsely observed’ category, the ‘growth’ data and the ‘nephropathy’ data, both of which are used to illustrate alternative approaches for analysing sparse functional data. It then examines different classes of methods that can be applied to functional data, such as basis functions, mixed-effects models and local smoothing techniques, as well as specific methodologies for dealing with sparse functional data in the principal components, clustering, classification, and regression settings. Finally, it describes two approaches for performing regressions involving a functional predictor and a scalar response: SASDA (sequential algorithm for selecting design automatically) and FLiRTI (Functional Linear Regression That’s Interpretable).

The cultural community a child grows up in is arguably the most important influence in a child’s development. Culture and context should be incorporated into every research program in human development in our field. Ecocultural theory links structural and environmental conditions to the cultural learning environments of children and the everyday routines and activities that shape behavior and the minds of children. To do this, we require strong mixed methods, designs, samples, and analytical approaches. The world certainly is not linear, additive, and decontextualized, although for analytical purposes we can usefully model the world as if it were. This chapter discusses five research programs that use ecocultural models and integrate qualitative and quantitative methods: rural-urban migration and effects on parenting and children’s development in Kenya; sibling caretaking; countercultural families and children in California; families with children with disabilities in California; and interventions to support working poor families in Wisconsin.

Further, under truncation selection (only individuals above some threshold leave offspring), the selection intensity is a function of the fraction saved, and hence the breeder's equation is often expressed in terms of the selection intensity. An important special case of truncation selection is a threshold trait, wherein an individual only expresses a particular phenotype when its underlying liability value exceeds some threshold. This chapter examines selection on such traits, and generalizes this binary-trait setting (with binomial residuals) to other classes of discrete traits, wherein some underling linear model (generating the threshold) is this transformed via a generalized linear mixed model into an observed trait value.

This chapter starts by presenting the case for a comparative approach of the UK and US models for financial restructurings of companies in financial difficulties. It argues that a comparison is useful as the systems used to deal with financial problems are actually very dissimilar. The US has its chapter 11 regime, which is a statutory process under the Bankruptcy Code. This allows a company to restructure under court protection and does not require proof of insolvency. The English system has, by contrast, a mixed approach of contract, common law, and statute and no formal regime specifically designed to achieve a financial restructuring of secured debt. The chapter also considers what changes have occurred since the first edition of this book was published.

This chapter provides an overview of how the Sí, Yo Puedo (SYP) curriculum and program was developed from a qualitative pilot study that examined the meaning of marriage, relationships, and domestic violence among a small group of immigrant Latina women between 2004 and 2007. A prevention model was developed from the original pilot study that essentially became the SYP 11-week, group format, culturally specific curriculum and program. Over a five-year period, evaluation of the SYP curriculum and program in group settings was conducted with different community-based agencies in two Midwestern states. Rigorous qualitative research methods and design such as action research, mixed-methods, and survey methods were used. These methods were used to examine participant’s experience, improve weekly sessions, assess group facilitator’s experience, and observe for any differences among participants after completing the program. The framework of community-based participatory research was used throughout the ongoing evaluation.

Camming is based on a five-year mixed-methods study of the erotic webcam industry, and tells a pornographic story about the multibillion-dollar online sex industry colloquially called “camming.” Through camming, millions of people from all over the globe have found decent wages, friendship, intimacy, community, empowerment, and pleasure. This deeply rich book is filled with the stories of a diverse sample of cam models from around the world. This book is not a utopian tale. Cam models, like all sex workers, must grapple with exploitation, discrimination, harassment, and stigmatization. Using an intersectional lens, Jones is attentive to how the overlapping systems of neoliberal capitalism, White supremacy, patriarchy, cissexism, heterosexism, and ableism shape all cam models’ experiences in this new global sex industry. This thorough examination of the camming industry provides a unique vantage point from which to understand and theorize around gender, sexuality, race, and labor in a time when workers globally face increasing economic precariousness and worsened forms of alienation, and desperately desire to recapture pleasure in work. Despite the serious issues cam models face, Jones’s focus on pleasure will help people better understand the motivations for engaging in online sex work, as well as the complex social interactions between cam models and customers. In Camming, Jones pioneers an entirely new subfield in sociology—the sociology of pleasure. The sociology of pleasure can provide new insights into the motivation for social behavior and assist sociologists in analyzing social interactions in everyday life.

Film music and other sounds from the soundtrack have extended film aesthetics beyond the bounds of film into other media and culture. Sound design now can use musical software to enhance sound effects in films and music composers to incorporate sound effect recordings. Soundtrack elements now appear to have an “aesthetic” character. Technology has engendered a spatial sonic arena wherein sonic elements have mixed into a sensual and psychological field. Modern film soundtracks often evince a conceptual or aesthetic unity strikingly similar to musical unity, evident in disc releases unconnected to the cinema. In films sounds on their own work in a different way, implying visuals that we then expect to see or imagine. That soundimpliesvisuals is crucial also to extended soundtracks outside film.

Modern consumers are confronted by a growing array of colorful eco-labels on everything from coffee to computers. Yet, not all of these eco-labels are trustworthy. Despite the existence of well-established best practices for eco-labeling, many labels remain little more than superficial exercises in “greenwash.” How can consumers separate greenwash from genuine attempts to address environmental challenges? Beyond Greenwash? systematically investigates the credibility of transnational eco-labeling in a global and cross-sectoral context. It brings original data, an innovative mixed-method research design, and a unique measure of procedural credibility in transnational governance to bear on one of the most salient questions in contemporary global environmental politics. In doing so, it reaches the important conclusion that the rigor and credibility of transnational governance depends as much on who is being governed as who is doing the governing. Beyond Greenwash? offers practical insights into the viability of eco-labeling as a form of transnational governance and makes a timely contribution to broader debates in political science and international relations about when and how emergent forms of transnational governance can succeed in achieving their stated objectives.

A substantial amount of development programming assumes that women have preferences or aptitudes that are more conducive to economic development. For example, conditional cash transfer programmes commonly deliver funding to female household heads, and many microcredit schemes focus on women’s savings groups. This chapter examines a public goods game in northern Liberia. Women contributed substantially more to a small-scale development project when playing with other women than in mixed-gender groups, where they contributed at about the same levels as men. We try to explain this composition effect using a structural model, survey responses, and a second manipulation. Results suggest women in the all-women group put more weight on co-operation regardless of the value of the public good, the fear of discovery, or the desire to match others’ behaviour. We conjecture that players have stronger motivation to signal public-spiritedness when primed to consider themselves representatives of the women of the community.

The Cases Within Trials (CWT) model combines the randomized clinical trial (RCT) research design, based on quantitative group research, with richly and qualitatively detailed systematic case studies involving contrasting outcomes drawn from the experimental condition of the RCT. Chapter 1 of the book provides the broad historical and methodological context out of which the CWT method developed, including the recent dramatic growth of mixed-methods approaches in psychotherapy research generally, with an associated increase in their credibility and rigor. Chapter 2 presents the details of the CWT method and its application to Chapters 3–6, which present four specific projects that concretely illustrate the CWT method. The four projects vary across such dimensions as theoretical orientation and type of mental disorder. To facilitate comparison across projects, each is organized in three main sections, including results gained from the RCT, results gained from the case studies, and a synthesis of the two types of knowledge. Each project concludes with a commentary by an outside expert (or expert team) in the theoretical and disorder focus of the project. Chapter 7 presents an outside perspective on the four projects from a research team highly experienced in conducting and thinking about traditional RCTs. In view of the four projects as a whole, Chapter 8 presents the editors’ summary and analysis of themes and guidelines for the future embodied in the knowledge gained from the four projects.

Unable to contain the unrelenting force of oligarchy, especially after experimenting with neoliberal policies, most democracies have been corrupted into oligarchic democracies. The book explains how to reverse this corrupting trajectory by establishing a new counterpower strong enough to control the ruling elites. Building on the anti-oligarchic institutional innovations proposed by plebeian philosophers, the book rethinks the republic as a mixed order in which popular power is institutionalized to check the power of oligarchy. The book demonstrates how a plebeian republic would establish a network of local assemblies with the power to push for reform from the grassroots, independent of political parties and representative government. The book proposes to reverse the decay of democracy with the establishment of anti-oligarchic institutions through which common people can collectively resist the domination of the few.
