Abstract:
Background A cross-sectional study (Miyara et al, 2020) conducted by French researchers showed that the rate of current daily smoking was significantly lower in patients with COVID-19 than in the French general population, implying a potentially protective effect of smoking. Objective We aimed to examine the dissemination of the Miyara et al study among Twitter users and whether a shift in their attitudes toward smoking occurred after its publication as preprint on April 21, 2020. Methods Twitter posts were crawled between April 14 and May 4, 2020, by the Tweepy stream application programming interface, using a COVID-19–related keyword query. After filtering, the final 1929 tweets were classified into three groups: (1) tweets that were not related to the Miyara et al study before it was published, (2) tweets that were not related to Miyara et al study after it was published, and (3) tweets that were related to Miyara et al study after it was published. The attitudes toward smoking, as expressed in the tweets, were compared among the above three groups using multinomial logistic regression models in the statistical analysis software R (The R Foundation). Results Temporal analysis showed a peak in the number of tweets discussing the results from the Miyara et al study right after its publication. Multinomial logistic regression models on sentiment scores showed that the proportion of negative attitudes toward smoking in tweets related to the Miyara et al study after it was published (17.07%) was significantly lower than the proportion in tweets that were not related to the Miyara et al study, either before (44/126, 34.9%; P<.001) or after the Miyara et al study was published (68/198, 34.3%; P<.001). Conclusions The public’s attitude toward smoking shifted in a positive direction after the Miyara et al study found a lower incidence of COVID-19 cases among daily smokers.

Abstract:
Nobiru Coast, which is 2.8 km long coast located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, is a well-known coast because of high sediment deposition rate (Figure 1). The predominant littoral drift of this coast is from east to west (Takahashi and Tanaka, 2005). The sediment deposit at the western end causes significant effect on the aquaculture in Matsushima Bay which is located on the right of Miyato Island, due to closure of a channel connecting open sea and Matsushima Bay. Tanaka et al. (2006) reported the sediment deposition rate on this coast from historical maps. The tsunami, which occurred on 11 March 2011, caused different types of damage on the left and right-hand sides of the coast. Accordingly, this study would evaluate the change of shoreline on Nobiru Coast at decadal to centennial scales including the 2011 tsunami impact using aerial and satellites images.

Abstract:
Previous results, based on inhibition of fertilization by an anti–α6 integrin mAb (GoH3), suggest that the α6β1 integrin on mouse eggs functions as the receptor for sperm (Almeida, E.A., A.P. Huovila, A.E. Sutherland, L.E. Stephens, P.G. Calarco, L.M. Shaw, A.M. Mercurio, A. Sonnenberg, P. Primakoff, D.G. Myles, and J.M. White. 1995. Cell. 81:1095–1104). Because the egg surface tetraspanin CD9 is essential for gamete fusion (Kaji, K., S. Oda, T. Shikano, T. Ohnuki, Y. Uematsu, J. Sakagami, N. Tada, S. Miyazaki, and A. Kudo. 2000. Nat. Genet. 24:279–282; Le Naour, F., E. Rubinstein, C. Jasmin, M. Prenant, and C. Boucheix. 2000. Science. 287:319–321; Miyado, K., G. Yamada, S. Yamada, H. Hasuwa, Y. Nakamura, F. Ryu, K. Suzuki, K. Kosai, K. Inoue, A. Ogura, M. Okabe, and E. Mekada. 2000. Science. 287:321–324) and CD9 is known to associate with integrins, recent models of gamete fusion have posited that egg CD9 acts in association with α6β1 in fusion (Chen, M.S., K.S. Tung, S.A. Coonrod, Y. Takahashi, D. Bigler, A. Chang, Y. Yamashita, P.W. Kincade, J.C. Herr, and J.M. White. 1999. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA. 96:11830–11835; Kaji, K., S. Oda, T. Shikano, T. Ohnuki, Y. Uematsu, J. Sakagami, N. Tada, S. Miyazaki, and A. Kudo. 2000. Nat. Genet. 24:279–282; Le Naour, F., E. Rubinstein, C. Jasmin, M. Prenant, and C. Boucheix. 2000. Science. 287:319–321; Miyado, K., G. Yamada, S. Yamada, H. Hasuwa, Y. Nakamura, F. Ryu, K. Su- zuki, K. Kosai, K. Inoue, A. Ogura, M. Okabe, and E. Mekada. 2000. Science. 287:321–324). Using eggs from cultured ovaries of mice lacking the α6 integrin subunit, we found that the fertilization rate, fertilization index, and sperm binding were not impaired compared with wild-type or heterozygous controls. Furthermore, a reexamination of antibody inhibition, using an assay that better simulates in vivo fertilization conditions, revealed no inhibition of fusion by the GoH3 mAb. We also found that an anti-CD9 mAb completely blocks sperm fusion with either wild-type eggs or eggs lacking α6β1. Based on these results, we conclude that the α6β1 integrin is not essential for sperm–egg fusion, and we suggest a new model in which CD9 acts by itself, or interacts with egg protein(s) other than α6β1, to function in sperm–egg fusion.

Abstract:
Purpose: This report details a rare case of a high-pressure washer injury that caused ocular contusion, vitreous hemorrhage, and irreversible corneal edema without perforation necessitating corneal transplantation. Methods: The medical chart of a patient with a high-pressure washer injury at Miyata Eye Hospital (Miyazaki, Japan) was retrospectively reviewed. Results: A 57-year-old man presented to our hospital with a contusion in the left eye caused by a high-pressure washer 1 day prior to the visit. The visual acuity in the left eye was hand motion. Slit-lamp examination of the left eye revealed the presence of corneal epithelial defects, conjunctival lacerations, hyphema, and lacerated iris. Mild clouding of the lens was observed in the anterior chambers, suggestive of cataract. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography revealed the presence of blood in the anterior chamber and a thickened and edematous cornea. Ultrasound examination revealed the presence of vitreous hemorrhage. Therefore, vitreous surgery and traumatic cataract removal were performed under general anesthesia. Postoperatively, the corneal edema and marked opacity persisted, accompanied by glaucoma, and the visual acuity was measured at 0.01. Penetrating keratoplasty was performed 1 year and 2 months after the injury, and scleral fixation of the intraocular lens was performed under local anesthesia 2 years after the injury. The final visual acuity was 0.1 under rigid gas-permeable contact lens usage 3.5 years after sustaining the injury, and the patient required anti-glaucoma drugs. Conclusions: Our patient presented with ocular trauma caused by a high-pressure washer. Corneal transplantation was required although no ocular lacerations were detected. Sufficient instructions must be provided on the usage of heavy machinery to develop a safe working environment.

Abstract:
The indirect fluorescent-antibody technique has been used to establish the pattern of polar extension in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe 160 over a complete cell cycle in liquid medium, thus avoiding the possibility of perturbations being introduced by growth on an agar pad, which is the technique used in most other investigations. Nearly all of the cells (about 98%) showed more growth at the old end than at the new end that was formed by cleavage of the septum at the previous division. Importantly, there was no evidence of the abnormal growth pattern (i.e., the significant contribution of new ends to extension) in cells of S. pombe growing on agar pads reported by Miyata et al. (H. Miyata, M. Miyata, and B.F. Johnson. 1986. Can. J. Microbiol. 32: 528–530 and 1990. Can. J. Microbiol. 36: 390–394). In addition, extension over the cycle was inversely related to birth length (cells shorter than the mean at birth tended to produce daughter cells longer than themselves and vice versa), there was a small but significant asymmetry in the position of the septum, and the time of initiation of extension at the new end was estimated at about 0.24 of the cycle.Key words: Schizosaccharomyces pombe, fission yeast, cell-wall extension, end growth, cell cycle.

Abstract:
Geographic distribution and habitat use of Lepidoblepharis miyatai (Squamata: Sphaerodactylidae), with comments on the taxonomic status of the genus in northern Colombia. We present some ecological and biogeographic data on Lepidoblepharis miyatai, a small and endangered gecko endemic to the northwestern foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (SNSM), 31 years after its description. Based on museum specimens and feld observations, we recorded four new localities with confrmed presence of L. miyatai. We calculated the extent of occurrence and altitudinal distribution of this species reaching 21.3 km2 and from sea level to 360 m respectively. Lepidoblepharis miyatai inhabits plant formations of scrub thorn and tropical deciduous forest. Based on microhabitat data obtained from 88 individuals observed in “Las Tinajas Village” we can state a differential use of three substrates with predominant use of leaf-litter. We consider L. miyatai an endemic species of the northwestern sector of the SNSM with a distribution range limited to the south-west by the occurrence of L. sanctaemartae, and towards the east by a thus far undetermined Lepidoblepharis species (here called Lepidoblepharis cf. sanctaemartae). We do not register sympatry of L. miyatai with any other congener. Accordingly, we consider that the recent records of this species in the southeast sector of SNSM are erroneous, given that the specimens cited as L. miyatai of this zone correspond to Lepidoblepharis cf. sanctaemartae. Finally, a reevaluation of the conservation status of L. miyatai is needed, including precise information of its distribution.

Abstract:
Along with mono no aware, miyabi is an aesthetic sentiment that dominates the Heian period. Miyabi describes the elegant attitude and behavior between man and man, as well as between man and nature. Originating from Shinto, miyabi has subsequently become a significant concept of Japanese aesthetics. Miyabi percolated through Japanese literature over eras and was recorded in the compositions of Y. Kawataba – a writer who dedicated his life and literary career to preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of Japan amidst the invasion of European and American civilization. In Y. Kawabata's works, miyabi was expressed through the passion of being able to care for, cherish and contemplate nature at its utmost richness; of finding in nature the joy and energy that healed the wounds of the soul; of appreciating objects-symbols for traditional culture; of love, generosity and tolerance towards people.

Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction is an efficient and utilized method for the direct formation of carbon-carbon bonds. The effectiveness and efficiency of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction and its applications have been the topic of interest for synthetic chemists for the last few decades. Green chemistry is the area where we use eco-friendly products. Suzuki coupling includes palladium or nickel catalyzed coupling reaction, which involves ester of boric acids or simply boric acids with the organic halides or pseudohalide. In recent years, these catalytic systems have been developed in a green environment for Suzuki reaction (Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction). This review epitomizes the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction using efficient catalysts in various green media.

Abstract:
Abstract The Ryukyu Archipelago is located in the southwest of the Japanese islands and is composed of dozens of islands, grouped into the Miyako Islands, Yaeyama Islands, and Okinawa Islands. Based on the results of principal component analysis on genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms, genetic differentiation was observed among the island groups of the Ryukyu Archipelago. However, a detailed population structure analysis of the Ryukyu Archipelago has not yet been completed. We obtained genomic DNA samples from 1,240 individuals living in the Miyako Islands, and we genotyped 665,326 single-nucleotide polymorphisms to infer population history within the Miyako Islands, including Miyakojima, Irabu, and Ikema islands. The haplotype-based analysis showed that populations in the Miyako Islands were divided into three subpopulations located on Miyakojima northeast, Miyakojima southwest, and Irabu/Ikema. The results of haplotype sharing and the D statistics analyses showed that the Irabu/Ikema subpopulation received gene flows different from those of the Miyakojima subpopulations, which may be related with the historically attested immigration during the Gusuku period (900 − 500 BP). A coalescent-based demographic inference suggests that the Irabu/Ikema population firstly split away from the ancestral Ryukyu population about 41 generations ago, followed by a split of the Miyako southwest population from the ancestral Ryukyu population (about 16 generations ago), and the differentiation of the ancestral Ryukyu population into two populations (Miyako northeast and Okinawajima populations) about seven generations ago. Such genetic information is useful for explaining the population history of modern Miyako people and must be taken into account when performing disease association studies.

Abstract:
We re-examined the taxonomic status of plants treated as Sedum formosanum (Crassulaceae) from Miyako-jima Island of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, using morphological comparison and molecular phylogenetic analyses with related species. In morphology, plants from Miyako-jima Island bore a close resemblance to the other plants of S. formosanum, but differed in being perennial, polycarpic, and having lateral axillary branches. Molecular analyses based on ITS of nrDNA and six regions of cpDNA sequencing indicated that the Miyako-jima plants formed a distinct subclade. This subclade was part of a polytomy with three other subclades comprising nine taxa endemic to Taiwan and S. formosanum from other areas, including the type locality. Therefore, we propose and describe the Miyako-jima plants as a new subspecies, Sedum formosanum subsp. miyakojimense.

Ishii gave a simple state model for the two-variable Miyazawa polynomial by using pole diagrams in 2008 [A multi-variable polynomial invariant for virtual knots and links, J. Knot Theory Ramifications 17 (2008) 1311–1326]. H. A. Dye and L. H. Kauffman constructed an arrow polynomial of a virtual link in 2009 which is equivalent to the multi-variable Miyazawa polynomial [Virtual crossing number and the arrow polynomial, preprint (2008), arXiv:0810.3858v3, http://front.math.ucdavis.edu .]. We give a bracket model for the multi-variable Miyazawa polynomial via pole diagrams and polar tangles similarly to the Ishii's state model for the two-variable polynomial. By normalizing the bracket polynomial we get the multi-variable Miyazawa polynomial fK ∈ ℤ[A, A-1, K1, K2, …] of a virtual link K. n-similar knots take the same value for any Vassiliev invariant of degree < n. We show that fK1 ≡ fK2 mod (A4 - 1)n if two virtual links K1 and K2 are n-similar. Also we give a necessary condition for a virtual link to be periodic by using n-similarity of virtual tangles and the Miyazawa polynomial.

Abstract:
In the particular context of post-Cold War Japanese animation, the name of Miyazaki Gorō 宮崎 吾朗 (born 1967) is mostly related to the name of his illustrious father, Miyazaki Hayao 宮崎 駿 (born 1942). Professionally speaking, Miyazaki Gorō is a landscaper (construction consultant in the planning and designing of parks and gardens) as well as an animation director of two animation movies and one TV animation series. This paper focuses on the two animation movies released by Studio Ghibli under Miyazaki Gorō’s direction: Tales from the Earthsea (ゲド戦記 Gedo senki, 2006) and From Up On Poppy Hill (コクリコ坂から Kokuriko-zaka kara, 2011). Miyazaki Gorō’s two animation movies are described and analyzed, both as ideological manifestos continuing and, from a certain point onward, transcending what might be called the “Ghibli paradigm” and as aesthetical masterworks combining the “Ghibli paradigm” with fresh visions of employing animation as a medium, exploring, absorbing and integrating influences from beyond geographical boundaries and striving to break the “Japanese” limitations of the artistic language utilized in his approach to animated expressive modes.

Abstract:
Background Bystander intervention in cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a key factor in bridging the gap between the event and the arrival of emergency health services at the site. This study investigated the implementation rate of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) and 1-month survival after OHCA in Miyazaki prefecture and Miyazaki city district as well as compared them with those of eight prefectures in the Kyushu-Okinawa region in Japan. In addition, we analyzed prehospital factors associated with survival outcomes in Miyazaki city district. Methods We used data from an annual report released by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan (n = 627,982) and the Utstein reporting database in Miyazaki city district (n = 1,686) from 2015 to 2019. Result Despite having the highest rate of bystander CPR (20.8%), the 1-month survival rate (15.7%) of witnessed OHCA cases of cardiac causes in Miyazaki city district was comparable with that in the eight prefectures between 2015 and 2019. However, rates of survival (10.7%) in Miyazaki prefecture were lower than those in other prefectures. In 1,686 patients with OHCA (74 ± 18 years old, 59% male) from the Utstein reporting database identical to the 5-year study period in Miyazaki city district, binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that age of the recipient [odds ratio (OR) 0.979, 95% confidential interval (CI) 0.964–0.993, p = 0.004)], witness of the arrest event (OR 7.501, 95% CI 3.229–17.428, p < 0.001), AED implementation (OR 14.852, 95% CI 4.226–52.201, p < 0.001), and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) before transport (OR 31.070, 95% CI 16.585–58.208, p < 0.001) predicted the 1-month survival with favorable neurological outcomes. In addition, chest compression at a public place (p < 0.001) and by nonfamily members (p < 0.001) were associated with favorable outcomes (p = 0.015). Conclusions We found differences in 1-month survival rates after OHCA in the Kyushu-Okinawa region of Japan. Our results suggest that on-field ROSC with defibrillation performed by nonfamily bystanders who witnessed the event determines 1-month neurological outcomes after OHCA in Miyazaki city district. Continued education of citizens on CPR techniques and better access to AED devices may improve outcomes.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Using a library of genomic DNA from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Miyazaki F, a strict anaerobe, and two synthetic deoxyoligonucleotide probes designed for F-type ATPases, the genes for open reading frames (ORFs) 1 to 5 were cloned and sequenced. The predicted protein sequences of the gene products indicate that they are composed of 172, 488, 294, 471, and 134 amino acids, respectively, and that they share considerable identity at the amino acid level with δ, α, γ, β, and ɛ subunits found in other F-type ATPases, respectively. Furthermore, a component carrying ATPase activity was partially purified from the cytoplasmic membrane fraction of theD. vulgaris Miyazaki F cells. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of three major polypeptides separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate–12% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were identical to those of the products predicted by the sequences of ORF-2, ORF-3, and ORF-4, suggesting that an F-type ATPase is functioning in the D. vulgaris Miyazaki F cytoplasmic membrane. The amount of the F-type ATPase produced in the D. vulgaris Miyazaki F cells is similar to that in the Escherichia coli cells cultured aerobically. It indicates that the enzyme works as an ATP synthase in the D. vulgaris Miyazaki F cells in connection with sulfate respiration.

Abstract:
In this essay, Karou Miyazawa reflects on how she was both insider and outsider during her fieldwork in Fukushima, Japan, between 2013 and 2016, after the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant explosion devastated the region. During her time in Fukushima, Miyazawa experienced the emotions of community members as well as her own, which were rooted in specific individual and collective memories. While her nostalgic memories of home pulled her inside the community, community members' anger and skepticism toward researchers, which stemmed from memories of the wartime atomic bombings, pushed her outside the community. Based on this experience, Miyazawa has reconceptualized agency as one's ability to be susceptible to various emotions that circulate in the community and to move toward and/or away from insider and outsider positions. This new approach allows researchers to recognize the agency of their participants, form dialogic relationships with them, and collaboratively give testimonies over the long term. Miyazawa contends that such relationships will contribute to the decolonization of research.

Abstract:
This study employed two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) for the detection of anomalies in the two-dimensional ionospheric total electron content (TEC) associated with Japan three earthquakes and earthquake-induced tsunamis. From 04:40 to 04:50 (UTC) on February 15th, first TEC precursor was detected over the epicentre of the 16 February quake with the duration time of at least 10 minutes. A weak TEC anomaly associated with an earthquake-induced tsunami was also detected from 23:15 to 23:20 (UTC) on 16 February with the duration time of at least 5 minutes. An additional earthquake (Mw = 6.3) occurred in Miyako in the vicinity of the first earthquake. Second TEC precursor to the 20 February Miyako earthquake was recorded over the epicentre between 10:20 and 10:30 (UTC) on 19 February with the duration time of at least 10 minutes. A supplemental earthquake occurred (Mw = 6.1) as well in Miyako in the vicinity of the first earthquake. A TEC precursor to the 21 February Miyako earthquake was recorded over the epicentre between 04:15 and 04:25 (UTC) on 20 February with the duration time of at least 10 minutes. The three Miyako earthquakes presented similar anomalies and duration time in the TEC fluctuations, due largely to similarities in the magnitudes of the largest principal eigenvalues and the close proximity of the epicentres. Our results led to the reasonable confirmation that the very weak TEC anomaly following the Miyako earthquake on 16 February was associated with the earthquake-induced tsunami. 2DPCA is a useful mathematical tool for the monitoring of anomalous ionospheric fluctuations for use in the early warning of weak tsunamis.

Abstract:
IntroductionNew medications for anaemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are desirable, owing to the limitations of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), the current standard of care. Molidustat is a novel hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl-hydroxylase inhibitor that stimulates erythropoietin production, predominately in the kidney. We report methodological details of three phase III trials, named MolIdustat once dailY improves renal Anaemia By Inducing erythropoietin (MIYABI), designed primarily to investigate the efficacy of molidustat therapy in adults with renal anaemia and dialysis-dependent CKD.Methods and analysisMIYABI Haemodialysis-Correction (HD-C) is a single-arm trial (24-week treatment duration) in approximately 25 patients on haemodialysis, currently untreated with ESAs. MIYABI Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is a single-arm trial (36 week treatment duration) in approximately 50 patients on peritoneal dialysis, treated or untreated with ESAs. MIYABI Haemodialysis-Maintenance (HD-M) is a randomised, active-controlled, double-blinded, double-dummy trial (52-week treatment duration) comparing molidustat with darbepoetin alfa in approximately 225 patients on haemodialysis, treated with ESAs. Molidustat (starting dose 75 mg/day) will be titrated 4-weekly to maintain haemoglobin in predetermined target ranges. The primary objective is to evaluate the efficacy of molidustat, using the following measures: the rate of rise in haemoglobin (g/L/week) at the first dose change up to week 8 (MIYABI HD-C); responder rate (MIYABI HD-C and MIYABI PD); mean haemoglobin level during weeks 33–36 and non-inferiority to darbepoetin alfa shown by change in mean haemoglobin level from baseline (MIYABI HD-M). The secondary objectives are to assess safety, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. These trials will provide the first evaluations of molidustat therapy in patients receiving either peritoneal dialysis or currently untreated with ESAs on haemodialysis, and provide further evidence in patients treated with ESAs on haemodialysis.Ethics and disseminationThe protocols were approved by ethics committees at all participating sites. The trials will be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice. Abstract:
From historical strain records, Penicillium citreonigrum NBRC 4692 was originally isolated as the toxigenic fungus responsible for the yellow rice incident in Japan in 1937. The fungus was named Penicillium toxicarium by I. Miyake, which was considered invalid due to the lack of a Latin diagnosis. Initially, it was named Penicillium sp. by Miyake et al. in 1940. Subsequently, P. toxicarium, which was erroneously cited as synonym of P. citreo-viride, was validated by C. Ramírez in 1982 with a Latin diagnosis and type designation (CBS 351.51). Later, CBS 351.51 was assigned to Penicillium trzebinskii by Houbraken et al. in 2014. In 2016, P. toxicarium was treated as a synonym of Penicillium citreosulfuratum based on a conclusion of molecular phylogenetic analysis. Recently, we discovered the taxonomic and nomenclatural short communication (in Japanese) by I. Miyake in 1947 on P. toxicarium sp. nov. with its Latin description and four illustrations but lacking the type designation. In this paper, we re-examined strain NBRC 4692 for its current taxonomic position based on morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis. NBRC 4692 (received from I. Miyake in 1951) has been found to have the same morphological characteristics as P. toxicarium, as was shown in Miyake's diagnosis in 1947. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the NBRC strain belongs to a unique clade, different from the clade comprising P. citreosulfuratum strains. As a conclusion, herein, P. toxicarium I. Miyake (1947) is reinstated as a correct name with the lectotype designation.

Abstract:
Little is known about how mitochondrial lipids reach inner membrane–localized metabolic enzymes for phosphatidylethanolamine synthesis. Aaltonen et al. (2016. J. Cell Biol. http://dx.doi.org/10.1083/jcb.201602007) and Miyata et al. (2016. J. Cell Biol. http://dx.doi.org/10.1083/jcb.201601082) now report roles for two mitochondrial complexes, Ups2–Mdm35 and mitochondrial contact site and cristae organizing system, in the biosynthesis and transport of mitochondrial lipids.
