Abstract:
In this paper, I will explore the concept of 'yakuwarigo' in Japanese language and present text analysis of three female characters, Eboshi, Rin and Yubaba from two anime movies of Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away). My aim is to demonstrate how the well-known director employs role language, particularly masculine language, to empower his female characters to take on prominent roles in a society where men traditionally hold dominance. In terms of film analysis, Miyazaki places his female characters in the public sphere, making them active participants in the storyline while consistently defying traditional Japanese feminine conventions. This study is closely tied to the field of gender linguistics and linguistic ideology from an analytical perspective, aiming to illustrate how Miyazaki's female characters diverge from linguistic norms in their dialogues.

Abstract:
The animated films of Hayao Miyazaki are populated by women, children and men at work. This article argues that the rendering of physical labour has the capacity to (re)connect the body to its broader social collective experience. The late philosopher, Bernard Stiegler, identifies the loss of savoir-faire (know-how) and savoir-vivre (life skills) as a critical deficit to how we live and work today. Miyazaki’s animated films provide a platform for potentially regaining savoir-faire and savoir-vivre in their reflexive portrayals of human labour. Every story told by Miyazaki involves scenes where bodies work with tools, with each other, and with machines to perform tasks. The rhythms of the working body speak to the ideals of labour as craft – not as exceptionally skilled expertise, but as an everyday practice – that presents ‘an opportunity to “think otherwise”’ as proposed by Glenn Adamson in The Crafter Reader (2010: 136). This article examines the performance of manual tasks in three contexts: the physical act of labour, labouring with machines and the animator’s labour. The author concludes by making the case that the animator’s labour extends to the craft of storytelling and, specifically, that Miyazaki’s animations are what Walter Benjamin called Kraftwerk – a ‘power work’ that re-models the ‘folkloric relations of space’ (see Esther Leslie’s, ‘Walter Benjamin, Traces of Craft’, 1998: 47) that keeps the human spirit alive.

Abstract:
In the particular context of post-Cold War Japanese animation, the name of Miyazaki Gorō 宮崎 吾朗 (born 1967) is mostly related to the name of his illustrious father, Miyazaki Hayao 宮崎 駿 (born 1942). Professionally speaking, Miyazaki Gorō is a landscaper (construction consultant in the planning and designing of parks and gardens) as well as an animation director of two animation movies and one TV animation series. This paper focuses on the two animation movies released by Studio Ghibli under Miyazaki Gorō’s direction: Tales from the Earthsea (ゲド戦記 Gedo senki, 2006) and From Up On Poppy Hill (コクリコ坂から Kokuriko-zaka kara, 2011). Miyazaki Gorō’s two animation movies are described and analyzed, both as ideological manifestos continuing and, from a certain point onward, transcending what might be called the “Ghibli paradigm” and as aesthetical masterworks combining the “Ghibli paradigm” with fresh visions of employing animation as a medium, exploring, absorbing and integrating influences from beyond geographical boundaries and striving to break the “Japanese” limitations of the artistic language utilized in his approach to animated expressive modes.

Abstract:
Background Bystander intervention in cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a key factor in bridging the gap between the event and the arrival of emergency health services at the site. This study investigated the implementation rate of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) and 1-month survival after OHCA in Miyazaki prefecture and Miyazaki city district as well as compared them with those of eight prefectures in the Kyushu-Okinawa region in Japan. In addition, we analyzed prehospital factors associated with survival outcomes in Miyazaki city district. Methods We used data from an annual report released by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan (n = 627,982) and the Utstein reporting database in Miyazaki city district (n = 1,686) from 2015 to 2019. Result Despite having the highest rate of bystander CPR (20.8%), the 1-month survival rate (15.7%) of witnessed OHCA cases of cardiac causes in Miyazaki city district was comparable with that in the eight prefectures between 2015 and 2019. However, rates of survival (10.7%) in Miyazaki prefecture were lower than those in other prefectures. In 1,686 patients with OHCA (74 ± 18 years old, 59% male) from the Utstein reporting database identical to the 5-year study period in Miyazaki city district, binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that age of the recipient [odds ratio (OR) 0.979, 95% confidential interval (CI) 0.964–0.993, p = 0.004)], witness of the arrest event (OR 7.501, 95% CI 3.229–17.428, p < 0.001), AED implementation (OR 14.852, 95% CI 4.226–52.201, p < 0.001), and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) before transport (OR 31.070, 95% CI 16.585–58.208, p < 0.001) predicted the 1-month survival with favorable neurological outcomes. In addition, chest compression at a public place (p < 0.001) and by nonfamily members (p < 0.001) were associated with favorable outcomes (p = 0.015). Conclusions We found differences in 1-month survival rates after OHCA in the Kyushu-Okinawa region of Japan. Our results suggest that on-field ROSC with defibrillation performed by nonfamily bystanders who witnessed the event determines 1-month neurological outcomes after OHCA in Miyazaki city district. Continued education of citizens on CPR techniques and better access to AED devices may improve outcomes.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Using a library of genomic DNA from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Miyazaki F, a strict anaerobe, and two synthetic deoxyoligonucleotide probes designed for F-type ATPases, the genes for open reading frames (ORFs) 1 to 5 were cloned and sequenced. The predicted protein sequences of the gene products indicate that they are composed of 172, 488, 294, 471, and 134 amino acids, respectively, and that they share considerable identity at the amino acid level with δ, α, γ, β, and ɛ subunits found in other F-type ATPases, respectively. Furthermore, a component carrying ATPase activity was partially purified from the cytoplasmic membrane fraction of theD. vulgaris Miyazaki F cells. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of three major polypeptides separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate–12% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were identical to those of the products predicted by the sequences of ORF-2, ORF-3, and ORF-4, suggesting that an F-type ATPase is functioning in the D. vulgaris Miyazaki F cytoplasmic membrane. The amount of the F-type ATPase produced in the D. vulgaris Miyazaki F cells is similar to that in the Escherichia coli cells cultured aerobically. It indicates that the enzyme works as an ATP synthase in the D. vulgaris Miyazaki F cells in connection with sulfate respiration.

Abstract:
(Title: Representation of Hero’s Journey on Main Character Chihiro in Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away Anime) This paper is the result of a qualitative descriptive type of literature study. The purpose of this study was to reveal the heroic journey process of main character of Spirited Away anime named Chihiro, based on the Hero’s Journey theory proposed by Vogler. Data about Chihiro's heroic journey are obtained from anime with note taking techniques. The method used in the analysis is the method of content analysis based on the theory of Hero's Journey. From the results of the analysis, it can be seen that the main character Chihiro has undergone a total of the twelve stages of the hero’s journey. Chihiro's adventure has succeeded in changing her personality which was initially timid, spoiled, and whiny to be brave, independent, calm and confident, and full of compassion. Chihiro's heroic journey proves the true definition of a hero according to Vogler, while also proving that to win a fight does not always use physical strength. There are times when thinking intelligence and emotional intelligence are much more needed. In addition, this anime also features a lot of kamisama which was once believed by the Japanese. Miyazaki might want to remind again about the existence of Japanese gods by displaying them in this anime, either those actually found in Japanese mythology or Miyazaki's own creations. Thus, the story of Spirited Away which has a mythical structure as stated by Vogler becomes much more alive and interesting.

Abstract:
The object of the study is the work of the Japanese animator, director Hayao Miyazaki. The subject of the research is the relationship between parents and children in Japanese society on the material of the animated fantasy film, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The empirical material of the article is not only the film itself, but also interviews of the director, participants of the film creation process, journalists, viewers, and posts in social networks. The research focuses on the images of the parents of the main character Chihiro and her parents from the point of view of Japanese viewers. The goals of Miyazaki in creating the image of «inadequate parents» are defined and analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the description of the beliefs associated with spiriting away (hidden by kami) in Japan. The authors describe cases of missing children in medieval Japan, including such phenomenon as 間引き mabiki – «getting rid of children». The basis of the research methodology is an interdisciplinary socio-cultural approach, methods of cultural and phonological interpretation and linguocultural commentary. The relevance of the research topic is determined by the expanding space and forms of intercultural communication, the popularity of Hayao Miyazaki's works all over the world, the humanistic nature of his works, the increased interest of researchers in the subculture of anime, which transfers cultural values and behavior models and serves as a tool of youth socialization. Scientific novelty of the study is determined by the fact that for the first time the film «Spirited Away» is analysed in terms of the relationship between parents and children, taking into account the broad context of national and cultural attitudes. Original materials in Japanese and their interpretation are introduced into the scientific turnover. In the course of the research, the authors conclude that the main task that the director was to help unleash the inner life force of the main character Chihiro, and for this purpose he sent the girl on a journey full of trials.

Abstract:
Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films question what audiences may conceive to be inanimate and bring these objects into a new sphere of categorization. New eco-philosophical schools of thought have recently raised the dualistic definitions of the terms ‘human’ and ‘non-human’ as problematic. Philosophical approaches of ‘new materialism’ point to agency inherent to all objects. Utilizing the term ‘non-human’ within this article will enable a more nuanced grasp of what may be considered as the ‘inanimate’ and the ‘non-human’. Miyazaki utilizes a philosophical approach to ‘enchantment’ to present audiences with a complex view of the relations between the human and non-human world through a folkloric lens, thereby providing an alternative mode of eco-criticism.

Abstract:
Objective. Ecology model is useful to provide a framework for organizing medical care. We aimed to see if the ecology model is applicable to perinatal care in Japan.Methods. On a population-based approach, we had 53,461 deliveries in Miyazaki from 2001 to 2005. In comparison, we used all of the 106,613 deliveries in Tokyo in 2009. Women were divided into 4 grades by risk-allocation criteria and their proportion was expressed per 1,000 women to apply to the model and to delineate the ecology curve. The perinatal mortality was compared by Chi-square test.Results. We found remarkable similarity in ecology curves between the original ecology models and that representing Miyazaki perinatal data. However, the curve representing Tokyo was different from the original one. Besides, the perinatal mortality was significantly lower in Miyazaki (4.40/1,000) than in Tokyo (5.06/1,000).Conclusion. Applying the ecology model to perinatal care is useful with improvement of perinatal outcome and it would provide an appropriate framework for organizing perinatal care.

Abstract:
The forcible relocation of Japanese-Canadians (Nikkei) during World War II has been widely examined; however, little scholarly attention has been paid to the impact of relocation on the medical services provided to, and by, the Nikkei. This article highlights the issue of providing sufficient medical care during forcible relocation and the experiences of one Nikkei physician, Dr Masajiro Miyazaki. His story illustrates both the limitations in the healthcare provided to the Nikkei community during relocation and the struggle for Nikkei medical professionals to continue their practice during the war. The agency of the Nikkei—who constantly balanced resistance and adaptation to oppressive conditions—comes to the forefront with this case study. Dr Miyazaki’s personal records of forcible relocation, as well as his published memoir, reveal aspects of the lived reality of one Nikkei physician who was not included in the government discourse, or in the dialogue among his fellow Nikkei physicians, such as inter-racial medical care. It is evident through this case that there was great diversity in the level of medical care which the Nikkei received during their relocation in Canada. Furthermore, Dr Masajiro Miyazaki’s story proves that healthcare professionals, from doctors to nurses’ aides who were both Nikkei and white, provided extraordinary medical services during the forcible relocation, despite significant constraints.

The development of 5G technology has brought tremendous changes to all areas of social life, especially in the external communication of culture; the increasing effect of 5G technology has become more obvious. All kinds of new media are constantly emerging, and the expression of cultural products is more diversified, and they also have certain characteristics of their own national cultural symbols. As one of the important representatives of Japanese modern and contemporary culture, animation works have made extremely outstanding contributions in promoting the spread of Japanese culture. Japanese animation is not only second to none in Asia but has also many fans all over the world. This article takes the characteristics of Hayao Miyazaki Animation’s external communication under the background of 5G as the starting point and deeply analyzes the impact of technological background changes on the external communication of Japanese traditional culture. Through data comparison, it is found that with the support of 5G technology, people’s habit of watching videos has changed a lot, from mobile terminals and short videos in the 4G era to large-screen projections and long animations in the 5G era. In a certain sense formed the return of the animation viewing form to the television era at the end of the last century. The number of video clicks on major websites shows that the number of Japanese animation products represented by Hayao Miyazaki Animation has increased significantly. Moreover, the age and occupation coverage of the audience is also very wide. The survey shows that people’s appreciation of Hayao Miyazaki’s animation at this stage is not only the attractiveness of the plot itself, but the deep meaning behind the animation is also the focus of attracting them. This gives Hayao Miyazaki Animation a higher level of appreciation value, that is, guiding countries that have suffered from the side effects of industrial civilization to rethink the relationship between ruleism and development speed. The research results suggest that the development of 5G technology has given traditional Japanese animation new characteristics in the dissemination of it and directly affected the cross-cultural dissemination effect of Japanese traditional culture. Abstract:
Neogene sedimentary deposits are present in the Miyazaki region, southern Kyushu, on the Pacific side of southwestern Japan. The upper part of the Miyazaki Group, exposed in the Tsuma–Takanabe region of northern Miyazaki, is divided into the Tsuma, Sadowara, and Takanabe formations, in ascending order, and contains a planktic foraminiferal and calcareous nannofossil record of Pliocene events of the mid-latitude northwestern Pacific. The geological age of these units is based on magneto- and biostratigraphy. Five calcareous nannofossil datum horizons are recognized: the last occurrence (LO) of Reticulofenestra pseudoumbilicus, the termination of acme zone II of Reticulofenestra minutula var. C, the LO of R. minutula var. B, calcareous nannofossil datum plane A, and the termination of acme zone I of R. minutula var. C. Six planktic foraminiferal bioevents are also recognized: a coiling direction change, from sinistral to dextral, in the genus Pulleniatina; the first occurrence (FO) of Globorotalia crassaformis; the LOs of Globorotalia margaritae, Sphaeroidinellopsis seminulina, and Dentoglobigerina altispira; and the FO of Neogloboquadrina asanoi. The presence of two calcareous nannofossil bioevents, Datum A and the termination of acme zone I of R. minitula var. C, suggests that the normal and reversed polarity intervals of the upper part of the Takanabe Formation correspond to Chron C2An.1n (latest Gauss Normal Epoch) and Chron C2r.2r (earliest Matuyama Reversed Epoch), respectively. Based on combined floral and faunal data and magnetostratigraphic chron boundaries from the ATNTS2004, the upper part of the Miyazaki Group is Middle to Late Pliocene in age.

Abstract:
This research paper evaluates how Hayao Miyazaki’s film Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) does not reaffirm or condone the celebration of the kidult but rather solemnizes confronting reality and growing up by the infantilized adult. By placing the narrative of war as a major subject matter within the film, Miyazaki allows the child to step outside their safe space while also contextualizing the actions of the characters Howl and Sophie. On one hand, Howl acts as a vain and powerful wizard who avoids choosing sides in the war and attempts to protect civilians. His maturation is explored through several symbols such as the castle, his hair and appearance, his heart, and the concept of staying human. Simultaneously, Sophie who skips the awkwardness of maturation and acts as a wise and heroic figure with agency and intellect becomes an active agent in ending the war. The characters thus echo Miyazaki’s other narratives of psycho-social maturation, combining elements of both Western and Japanese traditions in animation, and fashioning a transnational piece of work that appeals to a diverse audience.

Abstract:
This article attempts to address the lack of terminology concerning the long-standing but often overlooked relationship between religion and entertainment in Japan, arguing that these two seemingly discrete and opposing fields are often conflated. Examining the underlying thought behind the animation films of director Miyazaki Hayao, and investigating audience responses to those works, the article suggests that this conflation——religious entertainment or playful religion——can best be described by the neologism shûûkyôô asobi. Composed of the words "religion" and "play" in Japanese, shûûkyôô asobi jettisons the artificial distinction between popular entertainment and religion in favor of describing the common space between them, as well as describing the utilization of that space by various interest groups. This deployment of simultaneously religious and playful media or action can result in the creation of entirely new religious doctrines, interpretations, rituals, and beliefs.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the central role of landscape in Hayao Miyazaki’s films. The depiction of landscape in Miyazaki’s films goes beyond mere visual backdrops in order to convey deep symbolic meanings and to foster an empathic connection between the viewer and the world depicted. The renowned Japanese animator, filmmaker, screenwriter, draftsman, manga artist and film director has strongly promoted environmental awareness in his productions by paying close attention to the depiction and visualization of landscape dynamics, using details, and real and invented elements to create an engaging visual experience. The landscapes also take on emotional, metaphorical dimensions, reflecting the emotions and inner thoughts of the characters. Through an in-depth critical analysis of eleven selected films, the proposed research identifies the character-defining elements adopted by Miyazaki to stimulate reflection on a sustainable combination between urban development and the preservation of natural elements, as well as increasing focus on the beauty of the landscape, thereby highlighting the importance of its preservation. The relevance of this research is to understand Miyazaki’s approach to creating representations of natural elements and how he has managed to combine them with the plots of his various films, indirectly stimulating environmental awareness and fascination with nature in its different forms.

Full text
Abstract:
A species-specific latitudinal distribution of soybean rhizobia has been reported; Bradyrhizobium japonicum and B. elkanii dominate in nodules in northern and southern areas, respectively. The aim of this study was to elucidate whether temperature-dependent proliferation in soil or infection is more reliable for determining the latitudinal characteristic distribution of soybean-nodulating rhizobia under local climate conditions. Three study locations, Fukagawa (temperate continental climate), Matsue and Miyazaki (humid sub-tropical climate), were selected in Japan. Each soil sample was transported to the other study locations, and soybean cv. Orihime (non-Rj) was pot-cultivated using three soils at three study locations for two successive years. Species composition of Bradyrhizobium in the nodules was analyzed based on the partial 16S rRNA and 16S–23S rRNA ITS gene sequences. Two Bradyrhizobium japonicum (Bj11 and BjS10J) clusters and one B. elkanii (BeL7) cluster were phylogenetically sub-grouped into two (Bj11-1-2) and four clusters (BjS10J-1-4) based on the ITS sequence. In the Fukagawa soil, Bj11-1 dominated (80–87%) in all study locations. In the Matsue soil, the composition was similar in the Matsue and Miyazaki locations, in which BeL7 dominated (70–73%), while in the Fukagawa location, BeL7 decreased to 53% and Bj11-1 and BjS10J-3 increased. In the Miyazaki soil, BeL7 dominated at 77%, and BeL7 decreased to 13% and 33% in the Fukagawa and Matsue locations, respectively, while BjS10J-2 and BjS10J-4 increased. It was supposed that the B. japonicum strain preferably proliferated in the Fukagawa location, leading to its nodule dominancy, while in the Miyazaki location, temperature-dependent infection would lead to the nodule dominancy of B. elkanii, and both factors would be involved in the Matsue location.

Full text
Abstract:
In our previous study, we used genome resequencing to detect all candidate polymorphisms within a quantitative trait loci (QTL) region for beef marbling reported previously at 10–30 Mbp on bovine chromosome 7, and we selected 6044 polymorphisms as candidate quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs). In the present study, we aimed to identify quantitative trait genes (QTGs) and QTNs in this QTL region by verifying the effect of SNPs on beef marbling in two Japanese Black cattle populations using a Dynamic Array integrated fluidic circuit. In total, 96 selected SNPs were genotyped in 441 and 529 animals in Hyogo and Miyazaki cattle populations, respectively. The most significant p-values were detected in a SNP in a splice region of ALDH7A1 (SNP93_ALDH7A1; p = 3.46 × 10−5) in Hyogo cattle and a missense polymorphism of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM1) (SNP37_ICAM1; p = 3.33 × 10−4) in Miyazaki cattle. Interestingly, SNP93_ALDH7A1 was not significant (p = 0.459) in Miyazaki cattle, and SNP37_ICAM1 showed a weakly significant association (p = 0.043) in Hyogo cattle. Thus, each population would likely have different QTGs and QTNs for beef marbling in the QTL region. In the Hyogo population, it was not possible to determine the accurate range of the linkage disequilibrium (LD) block in LD block analysis because of a strong LD structure throughout the assessed region. In Miyazaki cattle, however, an LD block containing SNP37_ICAM1 had a range of 15.8–16.1 Mbp, suggesting that QTNs would be located within this region. The functions of 19 genes in the LD block were investigated. ICAM1 is known to play an important role in adipocyte differentiation; given this function and the effect of amino acid substitution, SNP37_ICAM1 was identified as a promising candidate QTN for beef marbling. Further research on the effect of SNP37_ICAM1 on adipocyte differentiation is expected to provide insights into the mechanism underlying beef marbling formation.

Abstract:
After evaluating some of the limitations in the reception of Hayao Miyazaki’s films as advocacy for climate change reform, the author suggests the need for a new path in animation toward animating the nonhuman. He nominates the anime series Mushishi as the ideal trailblazer for a more ecologically sound and posthumanistically inclined future. Mushishi envisions a fairly realistic turn-of-the-20th-century Japan in which beings called ‘ mushi’, simple organisms that are neither plant nor animal nor Miyazaki-esque fantastic spirit, exist alongside small agrarian communities. Using Mushishi and its barely animated titular beings as a test case, he argues that animation’s allusory–illusory nature and depiction of nature can combat the central tenets of anthropocentrism, generating a visually figurative ontology in which humans and nonhuman animals, subjects and objects, and characters and landscapes are democratically leveled down to symbolic totems, all rendered unreal through the filter of cartooning.
