Abstract:
The contraction of poly(methacrylic acid-co-methyl methacrylate) (P(MAA-co-MMA)) gel induced by complexation with linear poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) is quite different from that of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) gel. It was found that the concentration of PVP has a strong effect on the complexation with P(MAA-co-MMA) gel. When PVP was introduced into the P(MAA-co-MMA) network, its dynamic mechanic properties vary greatly between complexed and uncomplexed networks. It had the following results: (1) the higher modulus ratio; (2) a slight contraction of gel.

Abstract:
This article proposes a square split-ring resonator (SSRR) metamaterial absorber (MMA) for sub-6 GHz application. The unit cell of the MMA was designed and fabricated on commercially available low-cost FR-4 substrate material with a dielectric constant o 4.3. The higher effective medium ratio (EMR) of the designed unit cell shows the compactness of the MMA. The dimension of the unit cell is 9.5 × 9.5 × 1.6 mm3, which consists of two split rings and two arms with outer SSRR. The proposed MMA operates at 2.5 GHz, 4.9 GHz, and 6 GHz frequency bands with a 90% absorption peak and shows a single negative metamaterial property. The E-field, H-field, and surface current are also explored in support of absorption analysis. Moreover, the equivalent circuit model of the proposed MMA is modelled and simulated to validate the resonance behavior of the MMA structure. Finally, the proposed MMA can be used for the specific frequency bands of 5G applications such as signal absorption, crowdsensing, SAR reduction, etc.

Abstract:
Nanoparticles of the poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) or copolymer of P(MMA-co-MAA), were prepared by semicontinuous heterophase polymerization; they show a mean diameter of 12 nm and a 1.75 MMA/MAA molar ratio determined by carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance. The content of MAA, greater than that of Eudragit S100, copolymer of P(MMA-co-MAA) accepted by the FDA for the preparation of tablets, ensures its biocompatibility and its metabolism without toxic effects. Loaded with up to 22 wt. % aspirin, that is, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), these nanoparticles increase slightly their size, according to transmission electron microscopy; however, the presence of ASA on the nanoparticle surface decreases their stability, which leads to a certain aggregation of the particles in the dispersion. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry was used for demonstrating the loading of ASA in the nanoparticles.

Abstract:
Three electromagnetic-based linear actuators, namely a solenoid actuator (SA), a moving coil actuator (MCA), and a moving magnet actuator (MMA), are proposed for driving the needle in a jet dispenser. The total resistance force acting on the needle during operation, including the damping force, the friction force, the inertia force, the compression spring force, and the backpressure, are measured by an experimental model. The thrust force required to overcome this resistance force is then predicted for each actuator using finite element analysis (FEA) simulations. Simple two-dimensional models of the SA, MCA, and MMA are constructed using the same coil dimensions in every case in order to facilitate an objective comparison between them. Simulations in ANSYS Maxwell software are then performed to adjust the specific dimensions of each actuator structure in such a way as to generate the thrust force required to drive the needle in the jet dispenser with the minimum excitation current possible. The simulation results show that for a maximum needle driving frequency of 250 Hz and a stroke length of 0.5 mm, the excitation current required to generate the necessary thrust force is equal to 1.8 A and 1.9 A for the MCA and MMA models, respectively, when a return spring is not used, and 2.2 A, 3.8 A, and 4.1 A for the SA, MCA, and MMA models, respectively, when a return spring is employed. It is additionally shown that the thrust force drop of the MCA and MMA models is far less than that of the SA model, about 0.7%, 1.8%, and 61% for three models, respectively. Three preliminary designs for jet dispensers incorporating the proposed actuators are also generated for reference purposes.

Full text
Abstract:
Methylmalonyl-CoA epimerase enzyme (MCEE) is responsible for catalyzing the isomeric conversion between D- and L-methylmalonyl-CoA, an intermediate along the conversion of propionyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA. A dedicated test for MCEE deficiency is not included in the newborn screening (NBS) panels but it can be incidentally identified when investigating methylmalonic acidemia and propionic acidemia. Here, we report for the first time the biochemical description of a case detected by NBS. The NBS results showed increased levels of propionylcarnitine (C3) and 2-methylcitric acid (MCA), while methylmalonic acid (MMA) and homocysteine (Hcy) were within the reference limits. Confirmatory analyses revealed altered levels of metabolites, including MCA and MMA, suggesting a block in the propionate degradation pathway. The analysis of methylmalonic pathway genes by next-generation sequencing (NGS) allowed the identification of the known homozygous nonsense variation c.139C>T (p.R47X) in exon 2 of the MCE gene. Conclusions: Elevated concentrations of C3 with a slight increase in MCA and normal MMA and Hcy during NBS should prompt the consideration of MCEE deficiency in differential diagnosis. Increased MMA levels may be negligible at NBS as they may reach relevant values beyond the first days of life and thus could be identified only in confirmatory analyses.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine how MMA is portrayed in Swedish news mediasince historically speaking there has been a stigma about the sport and news media tends to depict it in a very violent manner, which previous studies also shows. The study appliestwo theoretical perspectives, framing theory and moral panic. Through a quantitativecontent analysis combined with a framing analysis a selection of articles are analyzed from some of the biggest sources of news media in Sweden, Aftonbladet, Expressen and SVT Nyheter as well as two MMA focused ones, Kimura and MMANytt. This is done toexamine how different types of news media depicts MMA and, in that way, see differencesand similarities to create a comprehensive understanding of the problem. The results show that the sport has grown and become more legitimate the last few years when compared to previous studies. Despite this a level of moral panic is being mediated in the way articles frame both the sport and its practitioners.

Abstract:
”Never!” That was the answer UFC President Dana White gave when asked when women would be seen in the UFC. Two years later the first fight between two women took place and now there’s more than 50 female competitors in the UFC - an organisation that earlier was reserved only for men. ”Women will never fight in the UFC” – A qualitative content analysis of the depiction of women’s MMA in media is a study which focuses on how women’s MMA and Ronda Rousey as an individual athlete are portrayed in american internet based MMA media, with a gender research perspective. This study also investigates how the introduction of the first women’s division in the UFC might have affected the depiction women’s MMA in media. The theoretical framework consists of gender theory concepts such as gender performativity, the man as norm, sports and masculinity. With this theoretical framework as foundation, a directed content analysis was used as research method. The results of this analysis shows a frequent emphasis on the appearance of female athletes in the material. An attractive woman is preferable, and a muscular and more masculine woman is considered as deviant. Female athletes are constantly in comparison to male athletes, both in a positive sense, when their athleticism or talent is compared, and in a negative sense to downgrade their appearance. It is clear that the man is the starting-point, which the women are compared to. The material shows that before the introduction of a female division in the UFC there were strong concerns about women entering the organisation - would it be received as a positive or a negative change and thus if it was economically sustainable. After the first women’s fight in the UFC, the appearances of the competitors weren’t referenced as frequently in the material as before, and their performances were highlighted in a much higher degree. Ronda Rousey is portrayed as the most important individual competitor in women’s MMA. She’s got “everything”, both the looks and talent. But to some extent her talent is marginalized. A resistance that may be based in the unfamiliarity of seeing a woman in the spotlight of the MMA-world.

This dissertation uses the cinematographic genres and its conventions as starting point to the writing of screenplays. The analysis of action movies, known as boxing movies, is taken as reference in the writing of a fighting films screenplay, which approach more specifically the MMA universe. Hence, my dissertation has two distinct results which are complementary at the same time: first a study of the proposed genre, suggesting its transformations, and the movie screenplay itself, O Demônio do Ringue

The following study consists in a sociological analysis about the production of manhood styles in the universe of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), from an ethnographic research made with a group of physical fight practitioners in the city named Goiânia-GO. Thus, it points out to the relevance of consumption and the interference of the market in the construction of some symbolic repertoire about manhood seen as essentials and/or primordials, discussing how the subjects seize and embody such an imaginary thing amidst stress, ambivalences and disputes. The document is organized into five chapters. In the first, I talk about the questionable utilization of physical fights and martial arts as an invented tradition, as an orientalist play, in the configuration of imaginary communities. In the second, I talk about the appearance of MMA coming from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), giving focus to historical and sociological aspects that takes part in the symbolic economy in which establishes some manly speeches that are important for involved agents with the dynamic of manhoods in question. The third chapter brings thoughts about implied codes to the expression of manhoods in the universe of fighters where it was realized the field research, emphasizing the usage of signs associated to the genre relations with the production of relevant styles of the habitus of fighters. I develop discussions about the acceptance of the speech of order and the discipline of the contributors in the fourth chapter, in order to determine how interactions with women and other manhoods go through the influence of conservative opinion; and how much this dynamic is responsible for the creation of conflicts in this universe. The fifth chapter talks about the biographies of iconic fighters in several levels of the field topology embodied by fighters and referees that take part of the cultural goods market around MMA and UFC. So I posit that the fight that brought the thoughts about manhoods in this study highlights the stress around the sexuality, of questions related to family and to work; and before it means a sportivization, it indicates an intense civilizing process, as it allows the fruition an uncontrolled control of the emotions and makes evident tools of social control. The respect and affection of traditional institutes like family and heterosexuality, like the possibility of social ascension through MMA, require from the fighters a self-sacrifice that reinstalls in the contemporaneous scenario the perspective of the individual discipline as a resource to the success. This process allow us to imply that dynamics and rhetoric of market (re)products styles of manhoods seen as “non corruptible” by the present day, such elements being appropriate by interested agents in the symbolic capital that is inherent in the form of disputes for hegemony. Keywords: Mixed Martial Arts, manhoods; uncontrolled control; imaginary communities; market of symbolic goods.

Abstract:
This work, conducted as part of a collaboration with the Safran-Heraklès group, aims at developing a new synthesis concept for the monomethylhydrazine (MMH), by process intensification using microreactor technology. The work was funded by the Rhône-Alpes region in the form of a doctoral fellowship TARGET 2008-2011. The first part of this research aims to study the stability of monochloramine solutions prepared in stoichiometric conditions. This synthesis was carried out continuously, for the first time ever, using microreactor technology. Optimal synthesis conditions as well as a set of security parameters have been established for a fast and secured transfer to industrial scale. The second part, also one of the main objectives of this work, is the extraction, under pressure, of all organic products (mostly MMH and monomethylamine) in the form of one condensed phase by demixing the crude reaction liquors. This phenomenon is related to the existence of a miscibility gap in the liquid ternary system H2O-MMA-NaOH. The optimization of the demixing step requires then the study of different solid-liquid-liquid phase diagrams involved. The last part deals with the chemical engineering aspect of the research. A kinetic modeling of the synthesis of MMH by the Raschig way was used in order to estimate the composition of the synthesis solution. These results and the application of phase diagrams allow the determination of optimal conditions for the isolation step and the establishment of process flow-sheets for the synthesis of MMH

Abstract:
Concepts about masculinity and violence are closely connected in today´s society, and have been so historically as well. The purpose of this essay is to study how these connections influence men who practice and compete in MMA and how this affects their construction of  masculinities. By the study of these men’s attitudes towards violence, masculinity and intimacy within MMA, this study aims to clarify the discourse that has developed in a martial arts club in Sweden. The conclusion of this study is that a seemingly contradictory image of violence and intimacy is produced in this discourse. Inside the MMA discourse there is room for physical intimacy between men in a way that is rarely accepted in society at large. At the same time their attitudes towards violence can be explained by the fact that the practitioners separate violent actions from aggression and therefor do not view these actions as violence.

Abstract:
Abstract Machine learning-accelerated topology optimization faces the challenge of generating large amounts of optimal topologies for supervised learning on a training dataset. This data generation step is challenging for the method of Moving Morphable Components (MMC) which presents an oscillatory behavior near local optimum that negatively affects its convergence speed and therefore present a high data generation cost. This paper presents a comparative study of the most-used first-order optimizers applied to minimum compliance problems under the MMC framework for topology optimization. The Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA), its Globally Convergent version (GCMMA) and the hybrid MMA-GCMMA optimizer are compared using their final compliance and the total number of iterations until convergence as performance metrics. An extensive set of diversified boundary conditions for a rectangular beam minimum compliance problem is used as case study. The method of performance profiles is utilized to provide for each solver a probability distribution of outperforming its counterparts. Numerical results show that using a hybrid optimizer can accelerate the convergence speed of the MMC framework while still producing equally compliant topologies when compared to the MMA optimizer.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present the design, fabrication, and testing of a moving magnet actuator (MMA) for large range (∼10mm) nanopositioning. MMAs are direct-drive, single-phase electromagnetic linear actuators that provide frictionless and backlash-free motion. These qualities, along with an adequate motion range, make MMAs promising candidates for large range nanopositioning. In this work, we identify actuator- and system-level performance criteria and associated design tradeoffs, and use this knowledge to systematically and concurrently design an MMA and a double parallelogram flexure bearing. The resulting actuator provides a force output per unit square root power of 4.56N/W, better than 9% force uniformity with respect to stroke, and a low moving mass of 106g. An integrated thermal management system is also incorporated as part of the actuator in order to mitigate the heat dissipated from the MMA coils. The overall single-axis motion system was fabricated and tested to demonstrate a 36Hz open-loop bandwidth and less than 4nm (RMS) steady-state positioning noise over a 10mm motion range. Preliminary closed-loop design and testing highlight the potential of the proposed actuator in nanopositioning.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The objective of the present study was to analyze the findings of the scientific literature related to MMA through an exploratory systematic review on the subject and to present the state of the art of the sport from a multifactorial perspective. Condition being studied: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport characterized by its high degree of freedom in offensive and defensive approaches resulting in the inclusion of techniques and tactics from multiple combat sport styles. MMA has gained legitimacy and uniformity of rule sets after a tumultuous and unregulated introduction in North America as well as it is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are still no methodical, comprehensive, transparent, and replicable studies that have summarized the overall perspective of MMA athletes, resulting in an integrated analysis for a better scientific understanding and more efficient practical applications.
