AbstractStructure sharing (SS) and multi-mode integration (MMI) are types of sharing in designs that help in resource effectiveness. This research explores their prevalence in successful designs. To do this: (a) 5 award-winning designs from International Design Excellence Awards are chosen, information of these designs is used to construct their Function-Means Tree and this is used to check whether they exhibit SS or MMI, and (b) 250+ award-winning designs are examined via a longitudinal study to check whether they exhibit SS or MMI. Abstract We report dark–bright pulse pair generation from the ytterbium doped fiber laser mode-locked by cascaded nonlinear multimode interference (MMI) effect under an all-normal dispersion configuration. The MMI is implemented in a step index single mode–multimode–single mode fiber structure. The combination of two MMI structures, acting like a saturable absorber, has been used for stable mode-locking operation in the resonator. By adjusting the polarization controller attached to one of the MMI structure, stable dark–bright pulses are observed at fundamental, second and third harmonic repet

Dynamic control of the interaction significantly promotes the flexibility of design and is very important for the applications mentioned above. Many researchers tried to produce the dynamic structural color using mechanical displacement [2], polarization [3], and phase-change materials [4]. However, the color gamut from one design unit still be restricted. In this work, we demonstrated ultra-wide dynamic structura

Abstract The excellent stability of mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated titanium anodes have been used in the cathodic protection industry for almost 30 years. MMO coated titanium anodes are used in various environments, including seawater, brackish water, fresh water, carbon backfill, and concrete. However, many structure owners and CP engineers simply specify MMO coated titanium anodes by size, life, current rate or manufacturer’s name without understanding the characteristics, limitations and evaluation method of the MMO anodes. In addition, there is some confusion in the industry regarding the

Abstract During the chemical cleaning process using acids, in many electroplating and other descaling industries, there exists the problem of heavy metal loss. Hence there is always a need for abatement of this metal loss. A critical (steady state) value of the resistivity to corrosion of two organic compounds, 5-[2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-vinyl]-3-phenyl isoxazole (MVI) and 5-[2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-vinyl]-1,3,8-triaza-cyclopenta[a]indene (MCI) were determined by a combination of non-electrochemical and electrochemical monitoring techniques. The behavior of organic compound, on a metallic alloy, i.e.,

Abstract Most transportation infrastructure is built from steel and concrete. The steel may be in structural sections, such as girders, piles or rails, or embedded in concrete to form reinforced or prestressed concrete. Concrete provides excellent protection for embedded steel because Portland cement is very alkaline, forming a passive, protective layer on the steel surface. Concrete is also permeable, and even good-quality concrete can be penetrated by aggressive chemical ions that may initiate steel corrosion. Abstract:
The Old River Low Sill Structure (ORLSS) is located approximately 25 mi south of Vidalia, LA, and is part of the Old River Control Complex. The structure is founded on steel piles and is a 566-foot-long concrete structure constructed in 1959. The structure resembles a dam with 11, 44-foot-wide gates to prevent migration of the Mississippi River’s current course to a hydraulically shorter course down the Atchafalaya River. A reanalysis was undertaken by the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center to investigate the current level of stability and the potential for adjusting the operatin

Abstract:
The objective of this research project is to generate experimental information with the aim to quantify the conservatism of current interaction rules and to develop more accurate (less conservative) rules for "thin-walled" structures under plastic collapse. The conservatism in current defect interaction rules for ductile materials has been assessed by examining the failure behaviour of 8 mm and 10 mm thick, narrow (width: 100 mm and 120 mm) and wide (width: 427 mm) plate, specimens containing two coplanar or non-coplanar through thickness notches. The test results were compared to the failure

Methods to quantify soil conditions of pore connectivity, tortuosity, and pore size as altered by compaction were done. Air-dry soil cores were scanned at the GeoSoilEnviroCARS sector at the Advanced Photon Source for x-ray computed microtomography of the Argonne facility. Data was collected on the APS bending magnet Sector 13. Soil sample cores 5- by 5-mm were studied. Skeletonization algorithms in the 3DMA-Rock software of Lindquist et al. were used to extract pore structure.
