Full textThis essay examines four navigation patterns that can be applied toresponsive websites. A navigation pattern consists of the placement of awebsite's navigation menu as well as any interaction a user must do to gainaccess to this. The posed question aims to determine which of these fourpatterns that are best suited for implementation on websites whose menuitems also have subcategories. The study makes use of freely availablepatterns that are modified and implemented in four websites, one for eachnavigation pattern. The results from the interviews and observations showsthat the tab system that's included in the "Paneled" prototype is experiencedas least time consuming and most orderly. In the chapter of conclusions it isstated that it isn't optimal to use navigation pattern "Paneled" for ecommerce purposes without further modification due to usability problems

Full textIt is becoming increasingly common for web site owners to customize their site to low-resolution devices such as mobile phones. To implement such an adjustment there are several technical options. This paper examines the technical aspects that can constitute an obstacles for web developers when they meet their customers' demands for resolution-independent design, with responsive web design. The work includes a interview with a client that resulted in a product specification, which then was used as the basis for a prototype. In which responsive web design was tested and evaluated as a technical option. The study revealed several technical aspects that can be challenging,e.g. pictures and iframes,so due to varying support for CSS in different browsers and many web sites complex structure.

Full textThe market of smart mobile devices is getting bigger and bigger and it can be a great way to reach out with your service or product to the crowed by deploying a mobile application. The installable applications on the mobile devices that uses device-specific functions is called native applications, and are tied to one platform. They can therefore only be used by those devices that make use of that platform. The two largest platforms is iOS (used by mobile devices from Apple) and Android (used by a variety of devices including Samsung, LG and HTC). This means that if you want to reach out to multiple platforms you will have to create a separate application for each platform. It also requires the developer/developers to have the proper knowledge of the programming languages in which the platform is compatible to. This can be both time consuming and expensive, especially if you as a company is hiring developers to develop your app. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the open source library known as Phonegap can be used to develop a mobile application that ultimately can be distributed and installed on multiple mobile platforms, this by using Web technologies such as CSS, HTML and JavaScript. During this study a mobile application will be created and evaluated. Studies will be done on how to go about and if there is anything one might need to take in consideration when it comes to the variety of units with different properties and functions. Usability testing will also be performed to determine whether a near native performance can achieved with this technique. The results show that Phonegap is an excellent tool for access of device-specific functions and that you together with interface frameworks such as jQuery Mobile can reach out to most of the newer mobile devices available today. However, one would do well to analyze if the scope of the application requires an interface library, as those who are available may perform poorly on certain mobile operating system.

Full textIt has become increasingly common that we now use our mobile devices to visit the web. This thesis examines the central design principles a designer should strive for when it is intended to simplify the use of a website in a static and variable situation trough a mobile device. The thesis includes a literature review, interviews on two occasions and a prototype development. The first interviews identified the fundamental design principles which then became the basis for the prototype. The second interviews were conducted towards the prototype with the same individuals. It examined if the fundamental design principles simplified the use of a website trough the mobile device. A comparison of the two interviews was conducted to compile the central design principles.

Mobi is a system that automatically rewrites web pages into formats optimized for web browsing on mobile devices. The system estimates heuristically which parts of a web page's content users are most likely interested in, using previously recorded history of user actions on the Web. By doing so, Mobi is able to remove the unnecessary portions of the web page and rewrite it in a format more fitting for the mobile device's form factor. Mobi accomplishes this by having a proxy server inject a client-side script onto web pages. The script examines previously recorded user actions related to the web page it is injected onto and rewrites the web page accordingly. The design and implementation of the system are described, as well as an evaluation over a variety of web pages.
