Abstract:

Abstract:
To create, update, or deploy a mobile application, a collection of hand-operated works must be satisfied. In this project, regardless of the mobile application's code and its core functionalities, which can be an e-book, an application, or even a mobile game, we will study how to automate, visualize and simplify the following manual procedures: 1.Create a remote Git repository for the mobile application. 2.Constructing or altering the mobile application's configuration or graphical contents. 3.Push all changes to the remote Git repository. 4.Deploy or distribute the mobile application from its Git repository after each push.

Production systems need to be monitored because failure to do so can cause a delay in production due to a lack of remote monitoring. There are solutions that provide this information, but they are limited, because they are owned and very expensive solutions. This paper proposes the development of a mobile application for the monitoring of S7-1200 programmable controller variables through Firebase. The goal is to use open-source-type tools to develop a real-time variable monitoring application of a programmable controller capable of hosting a Web server, and the sent data to the Firebase cloud, in order to avoid modifying the driver software and the data stored in memory. The implemented system of sending, handling and presenting variables is developed with tools of open source type, since they have as an advantage to have greater freedom in programming, unlike proprietary solutions or services. The tests were performed on the Siemens S7-1200 controller with a plastic injection molding machine.

Abstract:
The innovation progress for municipalities is currently going slowly. Today most of the communication, decision-making, delegation and service of process are still handled via letter mail or phone calls. Companies and municipalities are starting to comprehend this and see opportunities. With the technology that exists today it is possible to speed up the processes when citizens and municipalities comunicate with each other. By migrating from the old way of applying and filing different matters by letter mail to so-called digital e-services, the citizen can apply, complement and get info on how their matter is going directly on the web. Abou AB works with optimizing information handling for municipalities and has recently made it possible for municipalities to eliminate their tedious way of handling matters by traceable web communication. They have a vision to take this to a new level of easement to the municipalities and their citizens by offering these services in mobile phones as so-called apps. One of these contemplated services is to file error reports. The service will offer the citizen to send in a report with attached meta data such as photo and the location of the regarding matter. This will be done by the mobile phones built in hardware in form of camera and GPS. This master’s thesis will describe the work to develop a prototype for filing an error reports in mobile phones that support Android and iOS operating systems. The goal for this thesis work is to develop this prototype by means of a process tool called Kanban and investigate if the tool fits the situation properly. The situation is that two persons will work in parallel with slightly different projects. Also the quality and usability of the resulting prototype applications is asserted with qualitative evaluations that results in higher awareness of the defects and suggestions on how to reform and improve the application in a usability point of view. The actual implementation work was planned according to a slightly loose Kan- ban paradigm. Kanban is all about improvements along the way and the im- plementation phase is divided into smaller phases with sub goals and recurring process evaluations. Suggestions of improvement regarding the work processes is a result of this. A Kanban board that helps visualize the workflow is used to help team members and project owners to get a good overview of current situa- tions. Several adjustments were made throughout the project and the so-called lead times, the time it takes to complete a task, was shortened in average from the beginning of the project compared to the end of the project. Each phase in the implementation part of the thesis work resulted in different functionalities in the application. A phase was two weeks long and ended with a demo were the new functionality was demonstrated. Prior to each demo session everyone at the company where the thesis work was performed was invited. The participants in these sessions were encouraged to give feedback on what they saw to help increase the quality of the applications. The prototype applications resulted in a more easy accessible service to citizens. By cutting out the process steps that previously needed to been done on a computer the 1application contributes to the possibility of an increased democratization grade for the citizen. The investigation regarding if the Kanban process tool was a suitable aid in the implementation part of the project resulted in that it was suitable for the specific situation. By measuring both lead times and other activities that did not concern the implementation work and plot them in a diagram explained why some weeks did not have as high productivity as others. To assert the awareness and quality of the developed applications in terms of usability a so-called heuristic evaluation was performed. This qualitative eval- uation resulted in a set of usability problems. These problems were all graded into different priority to be solved and some was given suggestions on how to be solved. The main purpose with this evaluation was to find the problems and document them to possible future programmers if the prototype will go into production. The result of this evaluation has increased the usability of the application and consequently the quality.

Abstract:
Live Programming is a style of programming where the result of editing code can be immediately seen. This approach differs from the traditional edit-compile-run development model, as it reduces the gap between the meaning of the program representation and its behaviour. By giving immediate feedback, live coding can speed-up the development cycle, enable exploratory programming, and give a better understanding of a program. The gap is especially notable in mobile development, where the development cycle also includes the deploy to device step. Live Programming has the potential to make mobile development both easier and faster. The goal of this project is to investigate if a Live Programming environment can speed-up and make mobile development easier, by building and testing a working prototype of a Live programming tool. The results of building and testing the working system with users show that live editing speed is achievable for basic mobile applications and that the interviewed developers found live feedback valuable

Abstract:
Nowadays there are several different types of ways to build a mobile application, through web technologies, or through mobile manufacturers’ languages. Thus, in this study we focus on the three major mobile application development strategies: Native, Hybrid, and Web to Native. This plurality of solutions renders the selection of a mobile application development strategy complex. Hence, this study aims at understanding how developers deal with the selection of a mobile development approach. This thesis analyses their behaviour thanks to a survey that collects crucial information about developers searching habits. The latter analysis concludes that general guidelines are not sufficient to provide a tailored and accurate selection of mobile application development approach. Therefore, this study aims at improving the activity of finding a mobile application development strategy. In addition to this, the past and current states of the subject are discussed in a critical manner, which therefore results in using an analytical research approach. Knowing the aforementioned, a design science research approach is used to outline the iteration processes that occurred during this study. Each step of the study is thoroughly treated thanks to a tailored design cycle. Consequently, a mobile development strategy-finding model has been built by combining literature review and survey’s results. This model highlights the importance of the criteria extracted from the literature review and the survey. To support and allow constant self-evolution of the model, a suggestion of web platform is proposed. Finally, this model has been compared with a Titanium model. The result of this comparison outlines that the model created in this study seems more usable because it comprises the three major mobile application development strategies whereas the Titanium model only focuses in native solutions and its own hybrid solution. Moreover, the Titanium model focuses on selling its product rather than showing why it is better than the other mobile application development strategies.

Abstract:

The variety of mobile devices and their operating platforms has rapidly increased. With this increase come separate standards, programming languages, and distribution markets. Typically developers want to deliver their products to a variety of users encompassing various platforms; however choosing to develop using a native program for a platform can delay the development and release on another platform. Multi-platform development applications were created in order to deploy applications to various platforms in a more timely and cost efficient manner by using a single code base.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the multi-platform development applications MoSync, Appcelerator, and PhoneGap, create a test application using each multi-platform development application to run on the Android emulator and iOS simulator to determine performance, and also determine which multi-platform application was best suited for allowing a developer to create a mobile application that could be utilized on a variety of platforms.

Abstract:
Image enhancement improves an image appearance by increasing dominance of some features or by decreasing ambiguity between different regions of the image. Image enhancement techniques have been widely used in many applications of image processing where the subjective quality of images is important for human interpretation. In many cases, the images have lack of clarity and have some effects on images due to fog, low light and other daylight effects exist. So, the images which have these scenarios should be enhanced and made clear to recognize the objects clearly. Histogram-based image enhancement technique is mainly based on equalizing the histogram of the image and increasing the dynamic range corresponding to the image. The Histogram equalization algorithm was performed and tested using different images facing the low light, fog images and colour contrast and succeeded in obtaining enhanced images. This technique is implemented by averaging the histogram values as the probability density function. Initially, we have worked with the MATLAB code on Histogram Equalization and made changes to implement an Application Program Interface i.e., API using Xamarin software. The mobile application developed using Xamarin software works efficiently and has less execution time when compared to the application developed in Android Studio. Debugging of the application is successfully done in both Android and IOS versions. The focus of this thesis is to develop a mobile application on Image enhancement using Xamarin on low light, foggy images.

Abstract:
The overall purpose of this project is to develop a cross-platform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) application mainly for iOS and Android devices. This application aims to guide healthcare workers in the different processes and expected medication during cardiac arrest, which can often be a fast-paced and stressful scenario. The application will need to provide time-based and previous action-based recommendations for following medication and steps. Each step taken as well as at what time it was performed will also need to be documented automatically through the usage of the application.  This application is implemented using the framework React Native. Facebook developed React Native in 2015 targeting mobile application development. The base structure of React Native is based on React, a JavaScript library released in 2013 used to build web interfaces. React Native allows creation of mobile applications that can run on iOS and Android devices with a single codebase.  This project resulted in a mobile application capable of running on both iOS and Android platforms. The application has enough functionality to be used in a simulation for the CPR procedure during a cardiac arrest rescue scenario.

Abstract:
To develop mobile applications, developing companies can use different platforms. One approach is to use a native development environment targeting a specific operating system that gives access to all device functionalities. Another approach is to use a cross-platform development tool that allows developers to use a single code base targeting several operating systems, but often comes with limited standard features for accessing device functionalities. Each approach has its benefits and shortcomings. Multiple factors contribute to the selection of the developing platform. Thus, it is of big importance to use clearly defined criteria to make the decision that fits best the need of the final customer, but also that fits with the business and technological preconditions that the developing company can fulfil. Based on existing literature, and consolidating our takeaway with quantifiable, as well as additional business related criteria, this thesis work presents a framework to help decision makers in developing companies decide whether they will develop applications using a native or a cross-platform approach. A number of experienced professionals assessed the compiled list of criteria and attributed respective weight of each criterion in the framework. The decision makers in companies will use this framework, applying a formula, and thereafter calculating a score for each approach. The score will load then to determine whether to choose native or cross-platform development approach. The results show how we assign the final weight and, in the conclusion, we discuss limitations and future research directions for research.

Abstract:
Mobile devices are fast becoming ubiquitous in todays society. New devices are constantly being released with unique combinations of hardware and software, or platforms. In order to support the ever-increasing number of platforms, developers must embrace some method of cross-platform development in which the design and implementation of applications for different platforms may be streamlined. This thesis compares and contrasts two platforms, iOS and Android smartphones, and discusses how one might apply the Model, View, Controller pattern in order to minimize the inherent differences between the platforms. Furthermore, this thesis describes the Unified Design Process that can be used to implement native iOS and Android applications from a single design process. This design process reduces the amount of time required for the development of applications and maintains platform specific UI styles for the different platforms. The authors used this process to design and build a functional prototype of the NPS Muster application on both platforms. This application is capable of displaying announcements and allowing NPS students to conduct daily musters.

Abstract:
The evolution of Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs), has made an essential impact on patient-centered symptom management. PROs enable us to measure the patient‘s feels about their symptoms during treatment. ePROs (electronic PROs) are interfaces that allow a patient or health care provider to manage symptoms using an application such as mobile computing applications. The growth of mobile technologies in the healthcare sector has enabled us to take advantage of features like data manipulation, portability and standardization enable a better patient-driven symptom management. The Pan-Canadian Oncology Symptom Triage and Remote Support (COSTaRS) is a paper-based symptom management guideline designated for nurses. The objective of COSTaRS is to help and improve the decision-making process and create a consistent symptom management reporting system. Although this tool introduces numerous advantages in cancer symptom management, it also induces a number of issues for patients due to being overwhelming. Moreover, a noticeable portion of drawbacks originates from the paper-based nature of COSTaRS. In addition, cancer care symptom management mobile applications do not offer proper evidence-based centered symptom management system to the users. The purpose of this study is to design and developed the mobile version of COSTaRS for patients and caregivers. We identify problems with the current paper-based structure and related academic and non-academic works and then, we design and evaluate a mobile version of COSTaRS that takes advantage of advances in mobile technology. We leverage COSTaRS knowledge to create a mobile application for symptom management. We create an evidence-based platform for cancer treatment-related symptom management. A usability testing has been conducted for evaluation of the COSTaRS mobile application. The results of this study verify the usability of COSTaRS mobile application.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis was set to study the utilization of the MathWorks’ Simulink® program in model based application software development and its compatibility with the Vacon 100 inverter. The target was to identify all the problems related to everyday usage of this method and create a white paper of how to execute a model based design to create a Vacon 100 compatible system software. Before this thesis was started, there was very little knowledge of the compatibility of this method. However during the practical experiments, it became quite quickly clear that this method is very compatible with the Vacon 100. Majority of the problems expected before this thesis was started proved to be wrong. The only permanent problem that came up during this thesis was that Vacon 100 supports only the 32-bit floating-point precision while Simulink uses the 64-bit floating-point precision by default. Even though this data type incompatibility prevents usage of some of the Simulink’s blocks, it is by no means a limiting factor that restricts usage of this method. During the practical research no problems were found that completely prevent the usage of this method with the Vacon 100 inverter. The Simulink PLC Coder was in the spotlight during the practical research work. Even though the code generator worked better than was expected, the biggest problems limiting the usage of model based design relates to the PLC Coder. All in all based on this study, it is easy to say that model based design is a very usable tool for everyday design work. The method does not necessarily show its advantages in a small scale design work and the implementation phase can take some time before the company has collected the support model library needed. However in the future, the software requirements will increase, which grows the importance of model based design. A well-executed model based design can have a significant improving effect on financial, time and quality aspects
Tulevaisuudessa kuitenkin suunnittelutyön vaatimusten kasvaessa, mallipohjaisen ohjelmistotuotannon merkitys tulee kasvamaan.

Abstract:
Saab is a large swedish company providing a multitude of different products and services. This also means that Saab has to provide support and customer service for said products. Currently this is handled online in Support Portals, where customers and partners can access product information as well as an issue management system called SIRS. In the current situation the system is tailored for a desktop experience, and the workflow is therefore limited in terms of mobility. This project aims to allow the users to be more mobile by investigating the possibility of developing a mobile application for usage with SIRS. During the project a proof of concept of such an application has been developed. The implementation relies largely on using currently available api:s and when necessary porting some code from server to client side. By using various UX-related methods during the development of the application it is expected that the application is user friendly and fits the target audience. When looking at the result of the work, it is indeed possible to integrate a standalone mobile application with SIRS. The application also has usability which is comparable to the current system. However, some limitations were found that required rewriting the existing system to provide necessary data to client side applications like the one developed in this project. To conclude, the application is a proof of concept that shows what can be done without modifying the current system. Some of the major things that has to be modified before taking the application to production, such as stability concerns and testing, is also presented as results of the project.

Abstract:
In the medical field images obtained from high definition cameras and other medical imaging systems are an integral part of medical diagnosis. The analysis of these images are usually performed by the physicians who sometimes need to spend long hours reviewing the images before they are able to come up with a diagnosis and then decide on the course of action. In this dissertation we present a framework for a computer-aided analysis of medical imagery via the use of an expert system. While this problem has been discussed before, we will consider a system based on mobile devices. Since the release of the iPhone on April 2003, the popularity of mobile devices has increased rapidly and our lives have become more reliant on them. This popularity and the ease of development of mobile applications has now made it possible to perform on these devices many of the image analyses that previously required a personal computer. All of this has opened the door to a whole new set of possibilities and freed the physicians from their reliance on their desktop machines. The approach proposed in this dissertation aims to capitalize on these new found opportunities by providing a framework for analysis of medical images that physicians can utilize from their mobile devices thus remove their reliance on desktop computers. We also provide an expert system to aid in the analysis and advice on the selection of medical procedure. Finally, we also allow for other mobile applications to be developed by providing a generic mobile application development framework that allows for access of other applications into the mobile domain. In this dissertation we outline our work leading towards development of the proposed methodology and the remaining work needed to find a solution to the problem. In order to make this difficult problem tractable, we divide the problem into three parts: the development user interface modeling language and tooling, the creation of a game development modeling language and tooling, and the development of a generic mobile application framework. In order to make this problem more manageable, we will narrow down the initial scope to the hair transplant, and glaucoma domains.

Chen, Wenqian. "Membrane enhanced peptide synthesis (MEPS) : process development and application." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/51499.

Full text
Abstract:
Peptides are polymers of amino acids and are better drug candidates than traditional small-molecule compounds due to high specificity and potency. Conventional synthesis methods include Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS) and Liquid Phase Peptide Synthesis (LPPS), which have different technical limitations. Significant improvements can be made by a new technology, Membrane Enhanced Peptide Synthesis (MEPS), which integrates nanofiltration into LPPS for the purification of intermediate products. The research work described in this thesis is an outcome of the MemTide consortium (Imperial College London, Institute for Research in Biomedicine (Barcelona) (IRB) and University of Turku) and three companies (Evonik Membrane Extraction Technology (MET) Ltd, Janssen Pharmaceutica and Lonza AG), whose task was to investigate membrane enhanced synthesis for both peptides and oligonucleotides. This research project demonstrates that MEPS is ready for industrial application in terms of technical feasibility and economic performance relative to SPPS and LPPS. The MEPS of two peptides (Fmoc-Arg-Ala-Asp-Ala-NH2 (fully deprotected Fmoc-RADA-NH2) and Pyr-Ser(Bzl)-Ala-Phe-Asp-Leu-NH2 (partially deprotected Pyr-SAFDL-NH2)) is presented in the form of case studies. In the first case study, MEPS of fully deprotected Fmoc-RADA-NH2 was attempted four times. The first three attempts encountered the problem of incomplete coupling after the post-de-Fmoc diafiltration, which was solved by the extended diafiltration (14 wash volumes). At a scale of 10.01 mmol (those in the proof of concept studies were 0.9 and 1.8 mmol), the fourth attempt at MEPS was successful with a purity of 98.5 % and an overall yield of 78.6 % before cleavage and global deprotection. This shows that the integration of nanofiltration into LPPS was technically feasible for obtaining high purity and decent yield of the anchored peptide that were comparable to those of SPPS (85.3 % and 78.3 % respectively before cleavage and global deprotection). In the second case study, a similar research approach was adopted for the partially deprotected Pyr-SAFDL-NH2 and the same problem of incomplete coupling occurred even with increased wash volumes. The cause was found to be residual piperidine in the system after the post-de-Fmoc diafiltration. The solution was to add a base (diisopropylethylamine (DIEA), which was also a reagent in each coupling) into the system during diafiltration to assist the removal of piperidine. At a scale of 33.65 mmol and an anchor concentration of 10.4 weight % in the starting solution, the third attempt at MEPS was successful with a purity of 88.1 % and an overall yield of 71.2 % before cleavage and global deprotection (98.6 % and 72.6 % respectively for SPPS; 100.0 % and 72.4 % respectively for LPPS (by precipitation)). Furthermore, MEPS outperformed SPPS and LPPS (by precipitation) in terms of material cost (8.7 – 13.0 % lower), process time (33.3 – 91.7 % shorter), volumetric efficiency (15.4 – 15.9 % higher) and E-factor (29.3 – 68.8 % lower). The results proved that this novel process is indeed an attractive alternative to SPPS and LPPS (by precipitation) and is ready for industrial application. Encouraged by the positive results from the two case studies, attempts were made to further improve the performance of MEPS before cleavage and global deprotection by reducing the significant yield loss during diafiltration. Peptide synthesis was performed on two alternative anchors (amine-functionalised silica nanoparticles and a branched compound with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) arms (PyPEG)), but each had technical limitations during the coupling of amino acids. On the other hand, promising results were obtained from the modelling of MEPS in a two-stage membrane cascade system, as the second membrane served to recover the anchored peptide that permeated through the first one during diafiltration. As a result, the overall yield would increase from 71.2 to 93.8 %, making the new process even more attractive in terms of material cost (23.6 – 33.5 % lower than the single-stage MEPS and SPPS).

Abstract:
Nowadays when most people are used to smartphones the Volvo Group IT would like to look into the use of mobile devices in the production and design an application which can be used in the painting process at the Umeå plant. When learning a new system, whether it is on a computer or a mobile platform, it is crucial for the users’ performance to develop the system in accordance with their needs and wishes. One factor that can affect the performance negatively is if the users experience a high amount of cognitive load while using the system. This paper, therefore, investigates which design choices in a mobile application minimise cognitive load. The study is a single-case study where five different interview sessions and one test to measure cognitive load have been conducted. The sample size in the cognitive load test consisted of 7 participants, where 2 of them were women and the rest were men. The participants were instructed to perform seven different tasks on the prototype while their response times were measured. After each completed task the participants had to answer a mental effort rating. When all tasks had been performed, the participants was asked to rate the difficulty of each task. Each test was recorded using Microsoft Teams and qualitatively analysed. The results showed that three types of design choices used led to a low amount of cognitive load; (1) the use of the right type of icons, (2) the use of colour contrast and edges and (3) preservations of the users’ familiar and prior work experiences.

Pursuit of innovation projects with the absent of a methodology to follow hampers the development of the software product as its complexity grows since the freedom of its own advancement is confused with the lack of order on it. Traditional and agile methodologies do not adapt to this kind of projects therefore, in this paper we aim to design a model that incorporates characteristics of both of them to get a solution of a need found in society. In this study, we focus on the construction of a mobile application that answer to the lack of a system that integrates pharmaceutical products from different establishment through the appliance of usability concept with the UCD (User centered design) approach. In this case we only detail about four of the seven stages proposed in the model developed with its techniques, tools and activities conducted. Results obtained show that the model proposed achieve the expectative and its use is not limited to just mobile applications but to any kind of software project.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work was both to explore the variety of methods to develop mobile applications and to create a requirement documentation and solution proposal to the case study Rundtursbuss. During the 10 weeks work-experience, I had the possibility to investigate a range of methods to develop mobile applications and apply it to a reference case. The questions regarding which method to choose when developing mobile application are not easy to answer, once there is not only one solution that can fit the needs of all the applications that will be developed at Scania. Each application needs to be evaluated not only from a technical perspective, but also from a user-centered way. One of the best ways to quickly evaluate a project is asking what that makes the project mobile The analysis of each criteria aided in the evaluation of the application requirements and in reaching the conclusion that the most promising methods to develop the application Rundtursbuss are either native or cross-compilation ones. In conclusion, it is crucial to emphasize that while Scania does not have a procedure on how to develop, maintain and coordinate the development of mobile applications, single initiatives will continue to emerge, which increase the cost and affect the quality of their IT products and services.

Although Magna (a fictional name for an automobile manufacturer) demonstrates year-on-year improvement across new and refreshed vehicle programs, they continue to lag behind the industry average within the category of "problems per 100 vehicles" as measured by J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality Survey (IQS). This project is concerned with the development of tools which can be used to improve the characteristics associated with complex system performance - considered a major factor in providing customers with high quality vehicles. The primary toolset leveraged for this effort was Datum Flow Chain (DFC) analysis which is useful for mapping out complex mechanical systems and identifying sources of potential improvement. This toolset also provides a practical means of generating standard design architectures which can be used to inform future product designs. Several technical and cultural barriers had to be addressed in order to clearly demonstrate the value of this new approach to improving customer satisfaction.

Medical devices have traditionally been designed, built, and certified for use as monolithic units. A new vision of "Medical Application Platforms" (MAPs) is emerging that would enable compositional medical systems to be instantiated at the point of care from a collection of trusted components. This work details efforts to create a development environment for applications that run on these MAPs. The first contribution of this effort is a language and code generator that can be used to model and implement MAP applications. The language is a subset of the Architecture, Analysis and Design Language (AADL) that has been tailored to the platform-based environment of MAPs. Accompanying the language is software tooling that provides automated code generation targeting an existing MAP implementation. The second contribution is a new hazard analysis process called the Systematic Analysis of Faults and Errors (SAFE). SAFE is a modified version of the previously-existing System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), that has been made more rigorous, partially compositional, and easier. SAFE is not a replacement for STPA, however, rather it more effectively analyzes the hardware- and software-based elements of a full safety-critical system. SAFE has both manual and tool-assisted formats; the latter consists of AADL annotations that are designed to be used with the language subset from the first contribution. An automated report generator has also been implemented to accelerate the hazard analysis process. Third, this work examines how, independent of its place in the system hierarchy or the precise configuration of its environment, a component may contribute to the safety (or lack thereof) of an entire system. Based on this, we propose a reference model which generalizes notions of harm and the role of components in their environment so that they can be applied to components either in isolation or as part of a complete system. Connections between these formalisms and existing approaches for system composition and fault propagation are also established. This dissertation presents these contributions along with a review of relevant literature, evaluation of the SAFE process, and concludes with discussion of potential future work.

Abstract:
Manufacturing companies need to be able to respond to customer demand quickly and accurately. This requires the capability to manage product data effectively. Product Data Management (PDM) systems have been identified as a solution to deliver this capability by providing the right information to the right people at the right time and in the right format. The foundation of this research is that the concept of PDM is relevant and important within the product development process. This research focuses upon how the PDM concept is applied in practice to define and configure products and how it can be integrated with other major information systems to enable an enterprise wide information system. To enable the research aim, an extensive review of literature was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of PDM in enhancing the product definition process and in creating an interface between different business functional areas. A survey ofPDM system usage was undertaken aimed at identifying the current level of PDM usage within manufacturing enterprises in the UK. This was followed up by three industrial case studies to provide some degrees of validation of the results obtained. A need for effective one time order capture was identified from the three case studies which led to the development of a model specification for a late product configuration tool. A prototype system was produced to validate the design specification and was successfully demonstrated to a collaborating company. During the submission of this thesis, the collaborating company and the university are working on funding a project to pursue with its implementation. The work undertaken has firmly established the relevance ofPDM within the product development process and the importance of effective interfaces between PDM and other manufacturing information systems. The research will be of interest to small and medium sized manufacturing companies searching solutions for improving the management of their product data to enhance product definition and configuration.

Abstract:
In mobile computing, there is variety of approaches to develop applications. One challenge is the diversity of mobile devices in the market and targeting more than one mobile device to develop applications. One approach to handle this is traditional, in which for every device there is a project carried out to develop application. Another method is the cross-platform application development which has been introduced in recent years. The purpose of this thesis is to explore if existing cross-platform frameworks can aid startup companies to develop cross-platform mobile apps. The research questions are 1) How can cross-platform frameworks be a viable approach for start-up companies in this respect? 2) What challenges and benefits do cross-platform approaches bring to developers? In order to answer the research questions, respondents from five small-sized and two large companies developing mobile apps are being interviewed. The results shows that cross-platform frameworks are good tools when developing mobile apps for multiple platforms, but are applicable to different degrees depending on the actual case. Challenges and benefits identified by the respondents mainly touched upon decreasing development time, and less coding effort, but also the uniqueness of Apple and Android products and difficulties in making developers switch to new languages.

With the rapid growth of mobile applications, it is hence important to consider both utility and usability during the development process. Therefore, this study aims to propose a systematic methodology that helps improve the development process through user-centered design. It is based on the guidance of ISO 9241-210, with some more details and techniques added. It comprises of five stages including: (1) Plan the human centered process: defining the role of each member so as to apply user-centered design to every single stage; (2) Specify the context of use: investigating user requirements, characteristics, and work processes, as well as enhancing compatibility through the use of skeuomorphism design; (3) Specify user requirements: following the theory of signs to identify the contents and representation of each function, as well as the corresponding expectations from users; (4) Produce design process: providing the options of design from sketching to prototype simulation; (5) Evaluate design against user requirements: planning user evaluation such as interviews, task analysis, and satisfaction survey based on user requirements in each design stage. Finally, a case study was conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed methodology, and it was found that the application developed by the proposal methodology outperforms that developed by other methods in terms of user satisfaction. In addition, the time required for developing the application can be shortened. Further the conflicts between developer’s ideas and user’s expectations can be reduced. Developers may use the proposed methodology as a reference to design mobile applications that better satisfy target users. In addition, it can also be extended to serve as supporting tools for specific types of mobile applications.

The smartphone application industry has been on a steady rise all over the world, creating new jobs every year, in one of these companies I realised a 5-month internship in Sweden, developing a new feature for their app using React Native and Firebase. In this internship not only did I improved my programming skill but also gained invaluable insight on the industry, agile environments, how to better work as a team and the responsibility of developing a new feature for an established app on the market. In this dissertation I shall go over the history of the app, some stats of the industry, the agile methodology, the tools, frameworks and Services used to develop the feature I was trusted with, the day-to-day life of an agile developer in Equilab and how we overcame some issues.

Abstract:
This work takes a look at how some of the challenges facing the African Continent can be tackled by the use of Mobile Phone Applications. Mobile phone penetration in Africa is very high, as indicated by statistics from South Africa in 2009 which showed that 70% of all South Africans owned a cell-phone. As such, the mobile phone is the ideal infrastructure platform to introduce technology applications that can be easily accessed by the general public. The paper briefly discusses the current state of mobile applications on the continent including some key applications presently deployed and how they are being used to meet some major social challenges faced. The work then proposes the creation of the Mobile Doctor Application, a tool that gives simple solutions to end-users in response to their health related text message queries. The key stakeholders for this application and their respective roles are then discussed. The paper then details the requirements for the application, separates them logically and represents them graphically for a clear understanding. Also put forth are two possible different sets of architecture for this application, one fully manual and the other using different sets of technologies. Finally, each architecture is evaluated using compliance metrics and the ATAM Quality Attribute Tree

As the mobile devices are developed vigorously in recent years, they have all kinds of variety. Therefore, many mobile applications are coded by many different programming languages. For example, WAP mobile applications and J2ME MIDP mobile applications can be run on various mobile devices. According to diversity of mobile devices, diverse specifications and computing capability of mobile devices are individually developed. Therefore, mobile applications have various presentations of user interfaces and computational performance on different mobile devices. As a result of previous facts, programmers have following trouble. If they want to run mobile applications with same function on various mobile execution environments, then they have to code various versions of program by using different programming languages. Therefore, this thesis proposes XML-based Mobile Application Development Kit to reduce the cost of coding and maintaining mobile applications and solve the problem with different points of view.

ART (Adaptive Remote Terminal) is an adaptive framework for developing mobile applications. This framework, integrates thin-client computing and mobile computing, has many advantages of handheld devices. From designers’ point of view, the mobile applications can be written once and run on every platform. It can reduce providers’ porting effort and the cost of program maintenance. In respect of application capability, we can serve lots of work which cannot be supported just within the handheld devices by the stronger computing power and richer resources on the server side. In ART’s architecture, ART-Client is responsible for displaying the execution results, and the ART-Server should execute all the computation logic. They communicate within the network by asynchronous message delivery. In the mobile executing environment nowadays, there are many situations that the network cannot work robustly. And, the handheld devices’ computing resources are becoming powerful. In this paper, we provide a general converting tool. It can convert the mobile applications from ART-based version into the version which can be standing alone worked on the client side even when network crashes. We define a language, followed the XML standard, called 『 Interface Mapping Markup Language』. It can record the API mapping rules between different platforms, including the codes of program logic and user interface. By using our development kit, application providers can not only reduce the efforts of development but also lessen the porting cost. We make the mobile applications provide their most efficacy and functionality by using the handheld devices’ computing resources.

In today’s tech-industry, all the enterprises are looking for the best efficiency, raising reputation of the brand name and loyalty, and reducing the complaints which are from the bad QC. Therefore, need to focus on quality to each single product. In this paper, we want to show how to use Ford 8D to improve the procedure of producing, and eliminate the flaws quickly. Our report uses Ford 8D as our methods and tools to raise the process yield. And then we use phone-vibration as an example. One cellphone was checked out while it was produced on ( yyyy, mm, dd ) . Referred to be irregular because of non-vibration in Pro QC. Fortunately, with 5W2H (When、Where、Who、Why、How、How much) and identifying which part was wrong. Engineers conclude several parts below, and finally meet the standard of Pro QC. First, create the pre-blocking system to make the procedure completed smoothly, and use Cross-Validation to make sure the part of vibration is wrong. Second, figure out the soldered dot of the cable of vibration came off. Finally, the improvement is we compound the join after soldered in order to avoid the join coming off. From these procedures, we can really meet the standard of Pro QC and ready to be shipments.

Although wireless networks and mobile devices have become popular, the diversity of mobile devices and unsteadiness of wireless networks still cause software development much trouble. Mobile application developers are forced to confront these problems, and therefore spend a lot of time developing mobile applications. Although many studies on user interface adaptation and language transformation have attempted to solve the problem, most of them do not consider the computing power and functionalities of end-devices. As a result, these resources are ignored or wasted. To overcome these problems, the author proposes a generic Java mobile application development framework, named GJMA, to help developers build Java mobile applications quickly and easily. The GJMA framework can tailor an application to fit different devices according to user interface formats and the computing power and functionalities of the devices. Every application developed by GJMA can run in one of three computing modes: thin-client computing, distributed computing and fat-client computing. As a result, a mobile application developed on GJMA can enjoy the “write once, run everywhere” benefit. In addition, three adaptation mechanisms are introduced in this dissertation: computing model adaptation, user interface adaptation and network adaptation.
