L'Internet of Things (IoT) est caractérisé par l'introduction, auprès des utilisateurs, d'un nombre grandissant d'objets (ou things) capables d'acquérir des données depuis leur environnement et d'agir sur celui-ci, et dotés de capacités de calcul et de communication sophistiquées. Une grande partie de ces objets ont pour avantage d'être mobiles, mais cette particularitéprovoque aussi l'émergence de problèmes nouveaux. Les plus critiques d'entre eux découlent directement de l'Internet actuel, sous une forme amplifiée, et portent sur la gestion du grand nombre d'utilisateurs et d'objets connectés, l'interopérabilité entre des objets aux technologies hétérogènes et les changements d'environnement dus à la mobilité d'un très grand nombre d'objets. Cette thèse se propose d'étudier et de résoudre les problèmes susmentionnés en adaptant l'Architecture Orientée Service (SOA) pour que les capteurs et les actionneurs intégrés aux objets puissent être présentés comme des services et, de fait, réduire le couplage entre ces services et leurs hôtes de façon à abstraire leur nature hétérogène. Toutefois, en dépit de ses avantages, SOA n'a pas été conçue pour gérer une aussi grande échelle que celle de l'IoT mobile. En conséquence, la contribution principale de cette thèse porte sur la conception d'une Thing-based Service-Oriented Architecture repensant les fonctionnalités de SOA, et tout particulièrement les mécanismes de découverte et de composition de services. Cette nouvelle architecture a été mise en oeuvre au sein de MobIoT, un middleware spécifiquement conçu pour gérer et contrôler le très grand nombre d'objets mobiles impliqués dans les opérations propres à l'IoT. Dans le but d'évaluer cette nouvelle architecture, nous avons implémenté un prototype et analysé ses performances au travers de nombreuses expériences qui démontrent que les solutions que nous proposons sont viables et pertinentes, notamment en ce qui concerne le passage à l'échelle.

Abstract:
Pervasive computing is an intuitive evolution of computing paradigms driven by the wide adoption of mobile devices and wireless networks. It introduces a novel way to support users in their everyday life based on open and dynamic environments populated with unobtrusive services able to perform user tasks on the fly. Nevertheless, supporting user tasks from a functional point of view is not enough to gain the user's satisfaction. Users instead require that their tasks meet a certain Quality of Service (QoS) level. QoS is indeed an inherent and primary requisite of users going along with their required tasks. In the context of pervasive environments, fulfilling user tasks while delivering satisfactory QoS brings about several challenges that are mainly due to the openness, dynamics, and limited underlying resources of these environments. These challenges are mainly about (i) the lack of common QoS understanding among users and service providers, (ii) determining and integra- ting, on the fly, the services available in the environment and able to fulfill the functional and QoS requirements of users, and (iii) adapting the provided services at run-time to cope with QoS fluctuations and ensure meeting user requirements. To cope with the aforementioned issues, we opt for a middleware-based solution. Middle- ware represents indeed the appropriate software system to deal with common concerns of user applications such as QoS. In particular, we opt for a specific kind of middleware, viz., Ser- vice Oriented Middleware (SOM). SOM can leverage middleware technologies and the Service Oriented Computing (SOC) paradigm to enable pervasive environments as dynamic service en- vironments. Particularly, SOM can provide middleware services that allow for supporting QoS of user applications offered by pervasive environments. This thesis presents a QoS-aware service-oriented middleware for pervasive environments. The main contributions of this middleware are : (1) a semantic end-to-end QoS model that enables shared understanding of QoS in pervasive environments, (2) an efficient QoS-aware service composition approach allowing to build service compositions able to fulfill the user functional and QoS requirements, and (3) a QoS-driven adaptation approach to cope with QoS fluctuations during the execution of service compositions. The proposed contributions are implemented within a middleware platform called QASOM and their efficiency is validated based on experimental results.

Abstract:
In this thesis we will treat the Edge-to-Cloud services in the mobile Internet of Things context. Edge-to-Cloud services are services that, up to reach their goals, must run partially on the Cloud and partially on the Edge. This scenario has been chosen for two reasons: it is a very hop-topic nowadays, but these technologies have many treats and weakness to be solved. To refine those problems we considered some Edge-to-Cloud services and so by using some Cloud resources together with other resources, available on the IoT devices. In particular, to use Edge-to-Cloud services, we will move some resources from the Cloud to the device and so, Edge-to-Cloud service can also help the developer to make the deployment of his applications and this is an important feature in the IoT context. In this work our intent will be to make a support system for the developers and for the applications that helps to handle all the application life-cycle, offering a solution that will behave as a Middleware and so that is able to offer some service to the final applications in an almost transparent way. Between al the possible services, we focused our attention in the Migration services and so those services that allow to migrate the requests or application components. To do that we decided to split the applications in components, giving the possibility to the support system on the device to intercept the communication messages between the components. After having intercepted a message, the support system must autonomously take a decision for the application and it must decide if use a Cloud or a local resource to complete the task. Moreover, in most cases, this scenario is a constrained scenario, where the constrain are given by the application requirements. Up to offer a support system that will be more general as possible, we will introduce some user policies, by which the user will give some guidelines to the Edge-to-Cloud support system behavior.

Abstract:
Recent technical advances have fuelled the popularity of mobile computing. Mobile devices such as smart phones and personal digital assistants are becoming more commonly used due to the reduction in their size and increase of computational power. In addition, wireless network hotspots (in airports, hotels and commercial outlets) are now beginning to populate the environment. With these advances, new types of mobile applications are becoming available to support users on the move. The mobile environment presents a number of challenges to application developers (including frequent network disconnection and variable bandwidth); therefore mobile middleware platforms have emerged to simplify the development process of distributed mobile applications. However, the range of platforms now available introduces the new problem of middleware heterogeneity, i.e., applications developed upon different types of middleware do not interoperate with one another. Hence, the next generation of mobile computing applications must be developed independently of specific middleware implementation to allow them to continue interoperating in new locations. This thesis investigates the problem of middleware heterogeneity in the mobile computing environment. The approach taken to solve this problem involves the development of a component-based, higher-level middleware framework (named ReMMoC) that can dynamically adapt its underlying behaviour between different concrete middleware implementations e.g. in one location CORBA is utilised, whereas at the next location SOAP is used. Furthermore, this framework promotes a higher-level programming abstraction based upon the abstract services concepts of the Web Services Architecture. The ReMMoC framework is evaluated to ensure that middleware transparency is achieved and that applications can be developed that will operate in unknown locations across unpredictable middleware implementation. Inevitably, the ability to overcome heterogeneity comes at the cost of an incurred performance overhead; hence, this thesis also evaluates the impact of this overhead in the domain of mobile computing.

Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para a obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Informática<br>The last years have witnessed a convergence on the SOA paradigm from industrial processes enterprises (like logistics or manufacturing), using standards for data and communication. SOA promotes reusability, interoperability and loose-coupling of applications. The convergence towards SOA shows that we are leading to an infrastructure composed by several heterogeneous devices, the "Internet of Things". In this infrastructure everything can be abstracted as a service, such as household appliances, mobile devices, or industrial machinery. It is expected that this trend will continue, and as these devices interoperate in service composition, new functionalities may be discovered. Existing approaches for service composition, namely in business processes, are too bound to BPEL. Several alternatives and extensions of BPEL have been developed, but they feel more like patches than solutions. In this context SeDeUse [29] model has been proposed as an exercise to define new language constructs promoting a separation from service awareness and use. The model also relies on a middleware layer to support the execution of the application in dynamic environments. The goal of this dissertation is to instantiate the SeDeUse model in a widely used programming language in order to provide a framework for its assessment and for its future development. The work consists on implementing a concrete syntax for the model, a compilation process, and a middleware layer. The syntax contains the new language constructs that are integrated in the hosting language. The compilation process is responsible for service definition and code generation. Finally, the middleware acts as a support for the application (generated code) requests. We have seamlessly integrated SeDeUse in the Java programming language and developed a functional prototype. To assess the prototype capability, three scenarios were developed in which we demonstrated that our implementation provides a new, and simpler, approach for abstracting resources as services.

Software-intensive systems operating in a shared environment must utilize a â request, acquire and releaseâ protocol. In the popular client-server architecture resource-poor clients rely on servers for the needed capabilities. With mobile clients using wireless connectivity, the disparity in resource needs can force the consideration of adaptation by clients, leading to a strategy of self-reliance. Achieving self-reliance through adaptation becomes even more attractive in environments, which are dynamic and continually changing. A more comprehensive strategy is for the mobile client to recognize the changing resource levels and plan for any such degradation; that is, the applications in the mobile client need to adapt to the changing environment and availability of resources. Portable adaptation middleware that is sensitive to architecture and context changes in network operations is designed and implemented. The Adaptation Middleware not only provides the flexibility for the client applications to adapt to changing resources around them, but also to changing resource levels within the client applications. Further, the Adaptation Middleware imposes few changes on the structure of the client application. The Adaptation Middleware creates the adaptations; the client remains unaware and unconcerned with these adaptations. The Adaptation Middleware in this study also enables a more informative cost estimation with regard to applications such as mobile agents. A sample application developed using the Adaptation Middleware shows performance improvements in the range of 31% to 54%. A limited set of experiments show an average response time of 68 milliseconds, which seems acceptable for most applications. Further, the Adaptation Middleware permits increased stability for applications demonstrating demand levels subject to high uncertainty.<br>Master of Science

The coordinated provisioning of content tailored to user context and preferences, and the support for mobile multimodal and multichannel interactions are of paramount importance in providing users with a truly effective Ubiquitous support. However, so far the intrinsic heterogeneity and the lack of an integrated approach led to several either too vertical, or practically unusable proposals, thus resulting in poor and non-versatile support platforms for Ubiquitous computing. This work investigates and promotes design principles to help cope with these ever-changing and inherently dynamic scenarios. By following the outlined principles, we have designed and implemented a middleware support platform to support the provisioning of Ubiquitous mobile services and contents. To prove the viability of our approach, we have realized and stressed on top of our support platform a number of different, extremely complex and heterogeneous content and service provisioning scenarios. The encouraging results obtained are pushing our research work further, in order to provide a dynamic platform that is able to not only dynamically support novel Ubiquitous applicative scenarios by tailoring extremely diverse services and contents to heterogeneous user needs, but is also able to reconfigure and adapt itself in order to provide a truly optimized and tailored support for Ubiquitous service provisioning.

An MCC framework should provide elasticity and scalability in a distributed and dynamic way while dealing with limited environment resources and variable mobile contexts web applications, real-time, enterprise services, mobile to mobile, hostile environment, etc. that may include additional constraints impacting the design foundation of cloud services. We show in this thesis how service-oriented architecture SOA can be a key solution to provide distributed mobile cloud services and how OSGi platform can be an adaptive and efficient framework to provide such implementation. We adapt the proposed MCC framework to different architecture contexts. The first one is a traditional centric model, where mobile devices are reduced to consuming services. The second one is a distributed model where the power of mobile-to-mobile interaction offers unlimited value-services opportunities, and finally, three-tier architecture is considered with the introduction of the cloudlet notion. For each context, we explore the performance of our service-oriented framework, and contrast it with alternative existing solutions

Abstract:
This thesis investigates designs that enable individual components of a distributed system to work together and coordinate their actions towards a common goal. While the basic motivation for our research is to develop engineering principles for large-scale autonomous systems, we address the problem in the context of resource management in server clusters that provide web services. To this end, we have developed, implemented and evaluated a decentralized design for resource management that follows four principles. First, in order to facilitate scalability, each node has only partial knowledge of the system. Second, each node can adapt and change its role at runtime. Third, each node runs a number of local control mechanisms independently and asynchronously from its peers. Fourth, each node dynamically adapts its local configuration in order to optimize a global utility function. The design includes three fundamental building blocks: overlay construction, request routing and application placement. Overlay construction organizes the cluster nodes into a single dynamic overlay. Request routing directs service requests towards nodes with available resources. Application placement partitions the cluster resources between applications, and dynamically adjusts the allocation in response to changes in external load, node failures, etc. We have evaluated the design using complexity analysis, simulation and prototype implementation. Using complexity analysis and simulation, we have shown that the system is scalable, operates efficiently in steady state, quickly adapts to external events and allows for effective service differentiation by a system administrator. A prototype has been built using accepted technologies (Java, Tomcat) and evaluated using standard benchmarks (TPC-W and RUBiS). The evaluation results show that the behavior of the prototype matches closely that of the simulated design for key metrics related to adaptability and robustness, therefore validating our design and proving its feasibility.<br>QC 20100629

Abstract:
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are spontaneously formed out of a number of mobile devices that communicate thanks to short-range wireless communication capabilities (e. G. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). In many ad hoc networks deployed in real conditions, mobile nodes can exhibit highly dynamic behaviors of mobility and volatility. Because of their behavior, the devices in such network environments form so-called "islands" whose topology evolves continuously, rather than a single fully connected network. In this work, I focus on this class of MANETs which I refer to as disconnected MANETs. Network-wide communication in disconnected MANETs is still a challenge, namely because routing techniques designed for fully connected MANETs cannot be applied. The store-carry-and-forward approach provides a solution. With this approach, a message can be stored temporarily on a node, in order to be forwarded later when circumstances permit. Mobility then becomes an advantage as it facilitates message propagation. Messages are therefore forwarded from one network node to another when these nodes have the opportunity to meet. The service-oriented computing (SOC) model seems suited for ad hoc environments because it emphasizes the decoupled nature of its entities. Effectively, the decoupling between a client entity and a provider entity becomes essential in mobile environments with a fluctuating availability of providers, and where end-to-end communications are not guaranteed. Still, in existing service-oriented systems, providers are usually supposed to be always available (e. G. Web services). Providers are also assumed to be continuously reachable in wireless mobile environments, where local connected networks can be created using Wi-Fi hotspots, or by creating ad hoc networks using proximity one-hop or routed multi-hop protocols. Therefore, implementing distributed services for such networks still poses several challenges. Not only network-wide communication features must be provided, in spite of constant network fragmentation, but aspects such as the unpredictable reachability of the providers, or potential communication delays, must be taken into account at the service level. I propose a service platform for mobile nodes that supports the execution of service-oriented applications in disconnected MANETs. The service platform is implemented as a middleware composed of two layers: a communication layer, and a service layer. The communication layer provides mechanisms to decouple two service entities in terms of temporaneous interaction, synchronous behavior, and mutual knowledge. For this layer, I use an opportunistic and content-driven protocol (DoDWAN). The service layer provides mechanisms that decouple service providers and clients in terms of interoperability and service contract. For this layer, I propose solutions for service discovery and invocation. The elements that construct the discovery protocol are the description and advertisement at the provider side, and collection and selection at the client side. Description uses functional and non-functional service properties, as well as context properties. Discovery is based on a peer-to-peer architecture, where a client collects only interesting services. Content-based invocations are used to benefit from the service replication, where a multitude of providers can be offering the same business service. A client creates a functional request according to a discovered provider, then publishes its content-based request message to the attention of all compatible providers. After being satisfied, the client can initiate the healing of residual request and response messages from the network. The healing of response messages can also be initiated by the providers themselves according to the reliability of these responses. Using a prototype implementation of the middleware, I conducted simulations in a disconnected MANET environment. The performances of discovery is directly related to those of the underlying communication layer. Simulations confirm the benefits of content-based invocations in providing faster response times and better client satisfaction. G. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). Dans la plupart des réseaux ad hoc déployés dans des conditions réelles, les terminaux mobiles peuvent avoir des comportements de mobilité et de volatilité très dynamiques. À cause de leur mobilité, leur faible portée, et leur volatilité, les terminaux forment des îlots de connectivité qui évoluent continuellement. Dans cette thèse, je vise ce type de réseaux, qui sont appelés MANETs discontinus. Les communications dans les MANETs discontinus présentent un défi parce que les protocoles de routages conçus pour les MANETs connexes ne s'appliquent pas. L'approche store-carry-and-forward permet à un noeud de stocker temporairement un message, afin de l'envoyer plus tard quand les conditions deviennent favorables. La mobilité des noeuds devient un avantage en facilitant la propagation des messages : un noeud peut transférer un message d'un îlot vers un autre. L'approche orientée services semble appropriée pour mettre en oeuvre des applications dans les MANETs discontinus à cause de la nature découplée des entités. En effet, le découplage entre un client un fournisseur de service est essentielle dans un environnement où la disponibilité des fournisseurs est fluctuante, et où les communications de bout en bout ne sont pas garanties. Malgré ce découplage, dans les systèmes orientés services existants, les fournisseurs sont supposés toujours disponibles (e. G. Services Web). Les fournisseurs sont aussi considérés accessibles dans les réseaux locaux utilisant des bornes Wi-Fi, ou bien dans les réseaux ad hoc de proximité à un saut ou routés à plusieurs sauts. Bien que l'approche orientée services semble appropriée dans les MANETs discontinus, la mise en oeuvre de services distribués nécessite des communications dans l'ensemble du réseau malgré la fragmentation. En outre, la mise en oeuvre doit prendre en compte l'accessibilité non prévisible des fournisseurs, ainsi que les délais potentiels de la communication. Cette thèse propose une plate-forme de services pour les terminaux mobiles, qui supporte l'exécution d'applications orientées services dans les MANETs discontinus. La plate-forme consiste en un intergiciel structuré en deux couches : une couche communication et une couche service. La couche communication permet le découplage entre deux entités en terme d'interactions dans le temps, de comportement synchrone, et de connaissance mutuelle. Pour cette couche, un protocole opportuniste et basé contenu est utilisé (DoDWAN). La couche service permet le découplage entre les fournisseurs de services et les clients en terme d’interopérabilité et de contrat de service. Pour cette couche, des solutions de découverte et d'invocation de services sont proposées. Les éléments du protocole de découverte sont la description et la publication du coté fournisseur, et la collection et sélection du coté client. La description utilise des propriétés fonctionnelles et non-fonctionnelles du service, ainsi que des propriétés contextuelles. La découverte est basé sur le modèle pair-à-pair, où un client ne collectionne que les services intéressants. Les invocations sont basées contenus pour bénéficier de la réplication de services, dans les cas où plusieurs fournisseur peuvent fournir le même service métier. Le client crée sa requête selon un fournisseur déjà découvert, mais il publie cette requête pour être reçue par tous les fournisseurs compatibles. Après être satisfait, le client peut commencer de guérir le réseaux des messages résiduelles. Les fournisseurs aussi peuvent guérir le réseaux avant même la satisfaction du client. Des simulations dans un MANET discontinu sont effectuées. La performance de la découverte est directement liée à celle du protocole de communication. Les simulations montrent que l'utilisation des invocations basées contenus permet des meilleurs temps de réponses et une meilleure satisfaction du client. Les simulations montrent aussi que les mécanismes de guérison du réseau sont efficaces

One of the most important discussions in the cloud computing field is user satisfaction with the associated services. It is important to maintain trusted relationships between clients and providers, for customers who pay subscriptions to receive these services in a timely and accurate manner. Despite the overwhelming advantages of cloud services, clients sometimes have problems in service outage and resource failure. This is due to the failures that can happen in cloud servers, which cause outages to the received services. For example, the failure of Microsoft Office 365 on 18th of January 2016, caused email disruption which lasted for many days. New measures are needed to ensure that the contract signed between the two parties, known as a Service Level Agreement (SLA) has been adhered to. Measuring the quality of cloud computing provision from the client’s point of view is, therefore, essential in order to ensure that the service conforms to the level specified in the agreement; this is usually referred to as Quality of Experience. In recent years, there has been an increase shift in using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) to Representational State Transfer (REST) technology as an alternative technology in cloud applications APIs development. However, there is a penchant in most of cloud monitoring solutions to use SOAP protocol in managing the monitoring process. This trend has drawn the attention to the need for using REST technology in transferring the monitored data between the provider side and the client side. This thesis addresses the problem of monitoring the quality of Software as a Service from the users’ perspective, and the need for developing a lightweight middleware for delivering the monitored data in Software as a Service cloud computing. The aim of this research is to propose a user centric approach for monitoring Software as a Service in cloud computing, and to reduce the overhead caused by the monitoring process. In order to achieve this aim, a user centric middleware capable of monitoring the Quality of Experience has been developed. The developed middleware is a Service Oriented middleware which uses RESTful web services and provides the monitoring process as an add-on service. A new approach was developed for embedding the SLA parameters in REST services through extending the HTTP messages and exploiting the HEAD and OPTIONS methods to transmit the monitored data and to send notifications about anySLA violations. This reduces the need to exchange extra monitoring messages between the two parties, and hence reduces the communication overhead. Furthermore, the estimation of the user satisfaction was implemented by developing a decision making approach to estimate the Quality of Experience value and to predict the effect of the SLA parameters and the Quality of Service (QoS) on the user satisfaction. Fuzzy logic techniques were employed in the decision making process. The developed middleware is called MonSLAR, for Monitoring SLA for Restful services in SaaS cloud computing environments. The middleware was implemented using the Java programming language, and tested successfully in a cloud environment to prove the proposed solution’s capability of transmitting the data using the REST methods, in addition to providing automated and real time feedback. MonSLAR uses a distributed monitoring architecture, which allows SLA parameters to be embedded in the requests and responses of the REST protocol. The proposed middleware was evaluated by measuring the overhead caused by using REST technology in terms of response time and message size and compared to existing techniques. The results revealed that the message size overhead of using REST is approximately five times less than the message size overhead caused by SOAP. Furthermore, the response time overhead of the monitoring process is comparable to the overhead caused by the available monitoring frameworks. To sum up, the proposed middleware will help to strengthen the relationship between the client and the provider by using real time notifications to the client about any degradation in the cloud services, using a lightweight middleware.

Med utvecklingen av digitala trådlösa teknologier, som mobiltelefonen, är mobil Internettillgänglighet nu förverkligad.</p><p>Denna uppsats undersöker den förändrande miljön i finansindustrin som uppkommit till följd av informationteknologier, och vidare de strategiska affärsmässiga överväganden som måste göras inom detta område.</p><p>En kvalitativ fallstudie ansågs vara den mest givande metoden att använda i vår forskning. Genom att undersöka marknade, genom att skicka ut en väl strukturerad enkät till tre av de största svenska bankerna (Nordea, SEB och Handelsbanken), med relevanta intervjufrågor angående deras involvering i mobila banktjänster, kunde deras potential avgöras. These applications take their form in Internet-based banking, including transactions for equities trading, account enquiry, bill presentment and payments as well as transfers between accounts and people.</p><p>Mobile banking is the natural extension of these kinds of services. With the development of digital wireless technologies, such as the mobile phone, mobile Internet access is now enabled.</p><p>This thesis examines the changing landscape of the financial industry due to information technologies and the strategic considerations of mobile banking from a business perspective.</p><p>For us a single case study with a qualitative approach has been seen as the most rewarding method to apply in our research. By investigating the market, through sending out a well-structured survey to three of the major Swedish banks (Nordea, SEB and Handelsbanken), with relevant interview questions on their involvement in m-banking, their potential could be distinguished. The interviews were then conducted over the phone.</p><p>We conclude that in order to achieve a competitive edge in today’s world of advanced technologies, it is crucial that financial institutions position themselves in deploying these applications. Banks have the necessary capital assets in order to make significant invest-ments in technology infrastructure. Without having adapted themselves to technologies such as ATMs, credit cards, phones and the Internet, they would easily have been excluded from the market. It is likely that mobile banking will have the same impact.</p>

Although established in the market for more than a decade, and therefore mature, these technologies have failed to overcome the porting of the SOA concept to the Web. Web services are a recent technology that has been growing in the last few years. Their acceptance has increased over enterprises and organizations as they seem to overcome the Web and interoperability related problems of the Distributed Objects technology. Web services provide interoperability between systems and that is undoubtedly a strength of this technology since this is a crucial aspect of nowadays business. Moreover, the widespread of services led to the recent introduction of the service composition concept, that although being a technology independent concept,is closely related to Web services and there is no tool support for other technologies. Nonetheless, distributed objects still play an important role in the development of distributed systems, namely due to performance issues that are important when it comes to the internals of a platform. However, the use of service composition in these distributed object-based platforms requires the exposure of their composing services as Web services. The main objective of this masters thesis is improve the state-of-the-art in the support for the composition of services originating from distributed objects-based platforms. Bearing in mind that these kind of platforms are composed by several services, the idea is to present a platform as a set of Web services in order to be able to orchestrate them.

This thesis presents a new strategy in achieving highly reliable and accurate position solutions fulfilling the requirements of Location-Based Services (LBS) pedestrians’ applications. The new strategy is divided into two main parts. The first part integrates the available positioning technology within the surrounding LBS application context by introducing an adaptive LBS framework. The context can be described as a group of factors affecting the application behaviour; this includes environmental states, available resources and user preferences. The proposed adaptive framework consists of several stages, such as defining the contextual factors that have a direct effect on the positioning performance, identifying preliminary positioning performance requirements associated with different LBS application groups, and introducing an intelligent positioning services selection function. The second part of this work involves the design and development of a novel positioning model that is responsible for delivering highly reliable, accurate and precise position solutions to LBS users. This new model is based on the single frequency GPS Standard Positioning Service (SPS). Additionally, it is incorporated within the adaptive LBS framework while providing the position solutions, in which all identified contextual factors and application requirements are accounted. The positioning model operates over a client-server architecture including two main components, described as the Localisation Server (LS) and the Mobile Unit (MU). Hybrid functional approaches were developed at both components consisting of several processing procedures allowing the positioning model to operate in two position determination modes. Stand-alone mode is used if enough navigation information was available at the MU using its local positioning device (GPS/EGNOS receiver). Otherwise, server-based mode is utilised, in which the LS intervenes and starts providing the required position solutions. At the LS, multiple sources of GPS augmentation services were received using the Internet as the sole augmentation data transportation medium. The augmentation data was then processed and integrated for the purpose of guaranteeing the availability of valid and reliable information required for the provision of accurate and precise position solutions. Two main advanced position computation methods were developed at the LS, described as coordinate domain and raw domain. The positioning model was experimentally evaluated. According to the reported results, the LS through the developed position computation methods, was able to provide position samples with an accuracy of less than 2 meters, with high precision at 95% confidence level; this was achieved in urban, rural, and open space (clear satellite view) navigation environments. Additionally, the integrity of the position solutions was guaranteed in such environments during more than 90% of the navigation time, taking into consideration the identified integrity thresholds (Horizontal Alert Limits (HAL)=11 m). This positioning performance has outperformed the existing GPS/EGNOS service which was implemented at the MU in all scenarios and environments. In addition, utilising a simulation evaluation facility the developed positioning model performance was quantified with reference to a hybrid positioning service that will be offered by future Galileo Open Service (OS) along with GPS/EGNOS. Using the statistical t-test, it was concluded that there is no significant difference in terms of the position samples’ accuracy achieved from the developed positioning model and the hybrid system at a particular navigation environment described as rural area. The p-value was 0.08 and the level of significance used was 0.05. However, a significant difference in terms of the service integrity for the advantage of the hybrid system was experienced in all remaining scenarios and environments more especially the urban areas due to surrounding obstacles and conditions.

Interactions in the style of the ubiquitous computing paradigm are possible today, but only in handcrafted environments within one administrative and technological realm. This thesis describes an architecture (called Continuum), a design that realises the architecture, and a proof-of-concept implementation that brings ubiquitous computing to chaotic environments. Essentially, Continuum enables an ecology at the edge of the network, between users, competing service providers from overlapping administrative domains, competing internet service providers, content providers, and software developers that want to add value to the user experience. Continuum makes the ubiquitous computing functionality orthogonal to other application logic. Existing web applications are augmented for ubiquitous computing with functionality that is dynamically compiled and injected by a middleware proxy into the web pages requested by a web browser at the user?s mobile device. This enables adaptability to environment variability, manageability without user involvement, and expansibility without changes to the mobile. The middleware manipulates self-contained software units with precise functionality (called <i>frames</i>), which help the user interact with contextual services in conjunction with the data to which they are attached. The middleware and frame design explicitly incorporates the possibility of discrepancies between the assumptions of ubiquitous-computing software developers and field realities: multiple administrative domains, unavailable service, unavailable software, and missing contextual information. A framework for discovery and authorisation addresses the chaos inherent to the paradigm through the notion of <i>role assertions</i> acquired dynamically by the user. Each assertion represents service access credentials and contains bootstrapping points for service discovery on behalf of the holding user. A proof-of-concept prototype validates the design, and implements several frames that demonstrate general functionality, including driving discovery queries over multiple service discovery protocols and making equivalences between service types, across discovery protocols.

Tuttavia, i computer non nacquero inizialmente per persuadere: essi furono costruiti per gestire, calcolare, immagazzinare e recuperare dati. Non appena i computer si sono spostati dai laboratori di ricerca alla vita di tutti i giorni, sono però diventati sempre più persuasivi. Questa area di ricerca è chiamata pesuasive technology o captology, anche definita come lo studio dei sistemi informatici interattivi progettati per cambiare le attitudini e le abitudini delle persone. Nonostante il successo crescente delle tecnologie persuasive, sembra esserci una mancanza di framework sia teorici che pratici, che possano aiutare gli sviluppatori di applicazioni mobili a costruire applicazioni in grado di persuadere effettivamente gli utenti finali. Tuttavia, il lavoro condotto dal Professor Helal e dal Professor Lee al Persuasive Laboratory all’interno dell’University of Florida tenta di colmare questa lacuna. Infatti, hanno proposto un modello di persuasione semplice ma efficace, il quale può essere usato in maniera intuitiva da ingegneri o specialisti informatici. Inoltre, il Professor Helal e il Professor Lee hanno anche sviluppato Cicero, un middleware per dispositivi Android basato sul loro precedente modello, il quale può essere usato in modo molto semplice e veloce dagli sviluppatori per creare applicazioni persuasive. Il mio lavoro al centro di questa tesi progettuale si concentra sull’analisi del middleware appena descritto e, successivamente, sui miglioramenti e ampliamenti portati ad esso. I più importanti sono una nuova architettura di sensing, una nuova struttura basata sul cloud e un nuovo protocollo che permette di creare applicazioni specifiche per smartwatch.

Mobile devices are now capable of supporting a wide range of applications, many of which demand an ever increasing computational power. To this end, mobile cloud computing (MCC) has been proposed to address the limited computation power, memory, storage, and energy of such devices. An important challenge in MCC is to guarantee seamless discovery of services. To this end, this thesis proposes an architecture that provides user-transparent and low-latency service discovery, as well as automated service selection. Experimental results on a real cloud computing testbed demonstrated that the proposed work outperforms state of-the-art approaches by achieving extremely low discovery delay.

The current proliferation of mobile systems, such as smart phones, PDA and tablets, has led to their adoption as the primary computing platforms for many users. This trend suggests that designers will continue to aim towards the convergence of functionality on a single mobile device. However, this convergence penalizes the mobile system in computational resources such as processor speed, memory consumption, disk capacity, as well as in weight, size, ergonomics and the user’s most important component, battery life. Therefore, this current trend aims towards the efficient and effective use of its hardware and software components. Hence, energy consumption and response time are major concerns when executing complex algorithms on mobile devices because they require significant resources to solve intricate problems. Current cloud computing environments for performing complex and data intensive computation remotely are likely to be an excellent solution for off-loading computation and data processing from mobile devices restricted by reduced resources. In cloud computing, virtualization enables a logical abstraction of physical components in a scalable manner that can overcome the physical constraint of resources. This optimizes IT infrastructure and makes cloud computing a worthy cost effective solution. The intent of this thesis is to determine the types of applications that are better suited to be off-loaded to the cloud from mobile devices. To this end, this thesis quantitatively and qualitatively compares the performance of executing two different kinds of workloads locally on two different mobile devices and remotely on two different cloud computing providers. The results of this thesis are expected to provide valuable insight to developers and architects of mobile applications by providing information on the applications that can be performed remotely in order to save energy and get better response times while remaining transparent to users.

A feature-by-feature investigation and comparison of the J2ME and .NET environments was carried out, covering the range of issues necessary for a complete mobile Web application development life cycle. The resulting analysis addresses features and efficiencies of the application development environment and the target deployment environment, the degree to which the resultant services are compatible on a variety of platforms, and the ease with which applications can be designed to be extensible. The thesis offers an objective evaluation of the J2ME and the .NET mobile development environments, which highlights their strengths and weaknesses, and suggests guidelines for designing, creating, and deploying high quality mobile Web applications. The research uncovers no clear winner across all categories assessed. J2ME currently favours situations in which bandwidth is limited and client side processing power is relatively sufficient, it exerts the processing power of mobile devices over distributed network environments. .NET requires a less constrained network throughput, but performs adequately on clients with more limited processing power, supports a more diverse target platform range, and offers a more efficient, in terms of development time, development environment. Nowadays, many of the portable devices have significant processing power, storage and communication capacity. At the same time, grid computing technology became an important tool for collaborative work among users and organizations enabling the sharing of computing resources and services through multiple administrative domains. Due to the popularity of mobile computing, users of handheld devices form an important and new segment of the computing grid, assuming both the role of consumers and providers of resources and services. The integration of these two categories of distributed systems aims to extend the capabilities of portable devices, enabling access to a infrastructure of shared resources, as well as provide faster and easier means for grid services users to access information produced by these systems at any time and place. This work describes the MInteGrade (Mobile InteGrade), a software infrastructure that provides access to the InteGrade grid middleware from mobile devices connected through IEEE 802.11 wireless networks in infrastructure mode, and Bluetooth networks in Ad hoc mode. Through this mechanism for access to a computational grid, mobile clients can request the execution of applications on the grid, monitor the execution of applications and view the computation results already completed. The MInteGrade was designed so as to consider the dynamics of wireless networks. Paralelo a isso, a tecnologia de grades computacionais se consolidou como um ferramental importante para o trabalho colaborativo entre usuários e organizações, através do compartilhamento de recursos e serviços computacionais entre múltiplos domínios administrativos. Devido a esta popularização da computação móvel, usuários de dispositivos portáteis formam um importante e novo segmento da computação em grade, assumindo tanto o papel de usuários como também de provedores de recursos e serviços. A integração dessas duas categorias de sistemas distribuídos, objetiva estender as capacidades dos dispositivos computacionais móveis através do acesso a uma infra-estrutura de recursos compartilhados, além de fornecer aos usuários de serviços de grade meios mais rápidos e fáceis de acesso as informações produzidas por estes sistemas em qualquer hora e lugar. Mobile business solutions are one of the most attractive market segments of mobile information services. The third generation of mobile communication systems (3G) will be a significant step forward in the convergence of telecommunications and datacommunications industries. More specifically, the convergence of mobile technologies and the Internet allows compelling possibilities for future applications and solutions. However, most current mobile businesses and mobile application and solution providers are rather contributing to the process of convergence; many current ideas and solutions are based on the restrictions of existing mobile networks combined with Internet-based services. In the future, when mobile networks and the Internet have merged, it will no longer be possible to create revenue with these types of solutions. One concrete solution is the mobile middleware concept, bridging the mobile technologies and Internet world. This Master’s thesis studies the middleware concept for providing business applications in the light of 3G, making strategic recommendations to a provider of these kinds of services. A comprehensive discussion about the developments after 3G is introduced. Alternative solutions are presented and some strategic implications are introduced. The implications are motivated by an industry survey, carried out within this project. The topic of over-the-air data synchronization is discussed as an example for interim middleware. Mobile computing file system issues are seen as an interesting opportunity for business applications. The possibility of remote desktop screen access is studied, and measurements proving its feasability for hosted wireless application service provision are made. Emerging mobile Java technologies are discussed as an efficient platform for providing ubiquitous, device independent end-to-end solutions. As one of the recommended strategies, this thesis introduces the concept of hybrid thickness client applications as a feasible solution for migrating from current middleware solutions to an (uncertain) future of native, thick terminal applications, within a scope of two years. Based on this concept, a prototype for a 3G smartphone application was developed as an example. A set of possible strategic scenarios is presented and discussed. This thesis also discusses operator differentiation and business solutions in an all-IP based world. 3G networks and handset devices will introduce a large number of new applications and business opportunities, but such a change will also introduce new challenges and risks. The migration challenge is being illustrated in the case of Smartner, a mobile middleware solution provider focusing on business applications. As shown by this case, compared to current enabling solutions, a major shift in technologies is seen as needed, in order to maintain long-term success.<br>Mobila affärssystem bildar ett av de mest attraktiva marknadssegment inom mobila informationstjänster. Den tredje generationens mobila kommunikationssytem (3G) kommer att bli ett viktigt steg fram mot konvergensen mellan telekommunikationsoch datakommunikationsindustrin. Särskilt konvergensen som äger rum mellan mobila teknologier och Internet erbjuder utmanande möjligheter för framtida applikationer och lösningar. De flesta nuvarande företag och tjänster inom mobilbranschen kan dock snarast betraktas som ett bidrag till denna konvergens. Många av de nuvarande idéerna och lösningarna är nämligen baserade på avgränsningar och problem som uppstår vid kombination av mobila system med Internet-baserade tjänster. I framtiden, när mobila nät har vuxit ihop med Internet till en symbios, kommer det inte längre att vara möjligt att förtjäna på detta slag av lösningar. En konkret lösning är det mobila middleware-konceptet, som bildar en logisk koppling mellan mobila teknologier och Internet-världen. The appropriate framework to capture and share location information with mobile applications enable the development of interfaces and interface techniques that empower users to obtain and share information on the go. As such, the work in this thesis makes two major contributions. First is the SeeVT framework, a locative backbone that uses currently-available data and equipment in the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg VA environments (e.g., wireless signal triangulation, GPS signals) to make available to applications the location of the device in use. Applications built on this framework have available knowledge of the region in which the userâ s device is located. Second is a set of four applications built on the SeeVT framework: SeeVT â Alumni Edition (a guide for alumni returning to campus, often after lengthy absences), the Newman Project (a library information system for finding books and other library resources), VTAssist (a information sharing system for disabled users), and SeeVT-Art (a guide for users in our local inn and conference center to learn about the art on display). Key in this contribution is our identification and discussion of three interface techniques that emerged from our development efforts: an images-first presentation of information, a lightweight mobile augmented reality style of interaction, and locative content affordances that provide ways to quickly input focused types of information in mobile situations.<br>Master of Science

Se, comunemente, si è soliti immaginare un software in modalità on-premise, ovverosia installato ed eseguito direttamente sulla macchina locale, con il cloud computing questa mentalità viene meno: le applicazioni non hanno più la necessità di trovarsi fisicamente sul computer dell'utente, poiché vengono messe a disposizione via Internet attraverso una piattaforma virtuale e, tipicamente, ospitata e gestita da un fornitore di terze parti, risultando accessibili da qualsiasi terminale dotato di una connessione alla rete. Come vedremo nel corso dell'elaborato, questa soluzione non si applica soltanto ai software, bensì anche alle infrastrutture e piattaforme hardware. Il termine "cloud", nuvola in inglese, è molto azzeccato, in quanto esprime bene il concetto che sta alla base del paradigma: così come una nuvola si trova in cielo ed è visibile da molteplici posizioni, allo stesso modo il cloud "si trova" in rete ed è accessibile da vari device. Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello approfondire lo studio su questa frontiera dell'informatica, fornendo una descrizione più dettagliata dei vari aspetti teorici e mettendoli successivamente in pratica attraverso l'implementazione di un caso di studio.

Applications for Internet-enabled devices use machine learning to process captured data to make intelligent decisions or provide information to users. Typically, the computation to process the data is executed in cloud-based backends. The devices are used for sensing data, offloading it to the cloud, receiving responses and acting upon them. However, this approach leads to high end-to-end latency due to communication over the Internet. This dissertation proposes reducing this response time by minimizing offloading, and pushing computation close to the source of the data, i.e. to edge servers and devices themselves. To adapt to the resource constrained environment at the edge, it presents an approach that leverages spatiotemporal locality to push subparts of the model to the edge. This approach is embodied in a distributed caching framework, Cachier. Cachier is built upon a novel caching model for recognition, and is distributed across edge servers and devices. The analytical caching model for recognition provides a formulation for expected latency for recognition requests in Cachier. The formulation incorporates the effects of compute time and accuracy. It also incorporates network conditions, thus providing a method to compute expected response times under various conditions. This is utilized as a cost function by Cachier, at edge servers and devices. By analyzing requests at the edge server, Cachier caches relevant parts of the trained model at edge servers, which is used to respond to requests, minimizing the number of requests that go to the cloud. Then, Cachier uses context-aware prediction to prefetch parts of the trained model onto devices. The requests can then be processed on the devices, thus minimizing the number of offloaded requests. Finally, Cachier enables cooperation between nearby devices to allow exchanging prefetched data, reducing the dependence on remote servers even further. The efficacy of Cachier is evaluated by using it with an art recognition application. The application is driven using real world traces gathered at museums. By conducting a large-scale study with different control variables, we show that Cachier can lower latency, increase scalability and decrease infrastructure resource usage, while maintaining high accuracy.

Online information access on mobile devices is increasing as a result of the growth in the use of Internet-enabled handheld (or pocket-size) devices. The combined influence of recent enabling technologies such as Web 2.0, mobile app stores and improved wireless networks have driven the increase in online applications that allow users to access various types of information on mobile devices regardless of time and location. Examples of such applications (usually shortened to app) include: social media, such as FacebookTM App and TwitterTM App, banking applications such as (Standard Bank South Africa)TM Mobile Banking App and First National Bank (FNB) BankingTM App, and news application such as news 24TM App and BBCTM News App. Online businesses involved in buying, selling and business transaction processing activities via the Internet have exploited the opportunity to extend electronic commerce (e-commerce) initiatives into mobile commerce (m-commerce). Online businesses that interact with end user customers implement business to consumer (B2C) m-commerce applications that enable customers to access and browse product catalogue information on mobile devices, anytime, anywhere. Customers accessing electronic product catalogue information on a mobile device face a number of challenges such as a long list of products presented on a small screen and a longer information download time. These challenges mainly originate from the limiting and dynamic nature of the mobile apps operating environment, for example, dynamic location, bandwidth fluctuations and, diverse and limited device features, collectively referred to as context. The goal of this research was to design and implement a context-aware model that can be incorporated into an m-commerce application in order to improve the presentation of product catalogue information on m-commerce storefronts. The motivation for selecting product catalogue is prompted by literature which indicates that improved presentation of information in m-commerce (and e-commerce) applications has a positive impact on usability of the websites. Usable m-commerce (and e-commerce) websites improve efficiency in consumer behaviour that impacts sales, profits and business growth. The context-aware model aimed at collecting context information within the user environment and utilising it to determine optimal retrieval and presentation of product catalogue in m-commerce. An integrated logical context sensor and Mathematical algorithms were implemented in the context-aware model. The integrated logical context sensor was responsible for the collection of different types of predetermined context information such as device specification or capabilities, connection bandwidth, location and time of the day as well as the user profile. The algorithms transformed the collected context information into usable formats and enabled optimal retrieval and presentation of product catalogue data on a specific mobile device. Open-source implementation tools were utilised to implement components of the model including: HTML5, PhP, JavaScript and MySQL database. The context-aware model was incorporated into an existing m-commerce application. Two user evaluation studies were conducted during the course of the research. The first evaluation was to evaluate the accuracy of information collected by the context sensor component of the model. This survey was conducted with a sample of 30 users from different countries across the world. In-between the context sensor and main evaluation surveys, a pilot study was conducted with a sample of 19 users with great experience in mobile application development and use from SAP Next Business and Technology, Africa. Finally an overall user evaluation study was conducted with a sample of 30 users from a remote area called Kgautswane in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The results obtained indicate that the context-aware model was able to determine accurate context information in real-time and effectively determine how much product information should be retrieved and how the information should be presented on a mobile device interface. Two main contributions emerged from the research, first the research contributed to the field of mobile Human Computer Interaction. During the research, techniques of evaluating and improving usability of mobile applications were demonstrated. Secondly, the research made a significant contribution to the upcoming field of context-aware computing. The research brought clarity with regard to context-aware computing which is lacking in existing, current research despite the field’s proven impact of improving usability of applications. Researchers can utilise contributions made in this research to develop further techniques and usable context-aware solutions.

Today, the increasing number of applications based on the Internet of Things, as well as advances in wireless communication, information and communication technology, and mobile cloud computing have allowed users to access a wide range of resources while mobile. Vehicular clouds are considered key elements for today’s intelligent transportation systems. They are outfitted with equipment to enable applications and services for vehicle drivers, surrounding vehicles, pedestrians and third parties. As vehicular cloud computing has become more popular, due to its ability to improve driver and vehicle safety and provide provisioning services and applications, researchers and industry have growing interest in the design and development of vehicular networks for emerging applications. Though vehicle drivers can now access a variety of on-demand resources en route via vehicular network service providers, the development of vehicular cloud provisioning services has many challenges. In this dissertation, we examine the most critical provisioning service challenges drivers face, including, cost, privacy and latency. To this point, very little research has addressed these issues from the driver perspective. Privacy and service latency are certainly emerging challenges for drivers, as are service costs since this is a relatively new financial concept. Motivated by the Quality of Experience paradigm and the concept of the Trusted Third Party, we identify and investigate these challenges and examine the limitations and requirements of a vehicular environment. We found no research that addressed these challenges simultaneously, or investigated their effect on one another. We have developed a Quality of Experience framework that provides scalability and reduces congestion overhead for users. Furthermore, we propose two theory-based frameworks to manage on-demand service provision in vehicular clouds: Auction-driven Multi-objective Provisioning and a Multiagent/Multiobjective Interaction Game System. We present different approaches to these, and show through analytical and simulation results that our potential schemes help drivers minimize costs and latency, and maximize privacy.

The spread of SARS lead to a rapidly deteriorating and chaotic situation. Because SARS was a new infection, there was no prior knowledge that could be referenced to tackle such a complex, unknown and rapidly changing problem. Fortunately, through sound measures coupled with good leadership, quick action and inter-agency cooperation, the situation was quickly brought under control. This thesis uses the SARS incident as a case study to identify a set of network centric warfare methodologies and technologies that can be leveraged to facilitate the understanding and management of complex and rapidly changing situations. Mobile applications are demanding access to contextual information increasingly. For instance, applications require user’s environment data as well as their profiles in order to adapt themselves (interfaces, services, content) according to this context data. Mobile applications with this behavior are known as context-aware applications. Several software infrastructures have been created to help the development of this applications. However, it was verified that most of them do not store history of the contextual data, since mobile devices are resource constrained. They are not built taking into account the privacy of contextual data either, due the fact that applications may expose contextual data without user consent. This dissertation addresses these topics by extending an existing middleware platform that help the development of mobile context-aware applications. This work present a service named COP (Contextual data Offloading service with Privacy Support) and is based in: (i) a context model, (ii) a privacy policy and (iii) synchronization policies. The COP aims to store and process the contextual data generated from several mobile devices, using the computational power of the cloud. To evaluate this work we developed an application that uses both the migration and the privacy mechanism of the contextual data of the COP. Other two experiments were made. The first experiment evaluated the impact of contextual filter processing in mobile device and remote environment, in which the processing time and energy consumption were measured. In this experiment was possible to conclude that the migration of data from mobile device to a remote environment is advantageous. The second experiment evaluated the energy consumption to send contextual data.<br>Dispositivos móveis tornaram-se uma ferramenta comum no dia a dia das pessoas. Aplicações móveis cada vez mais exigem o acesso às informações contextuais. Por exemplo, aplicações requerem os dados do ambiente do usuário, bem como dos seus perfis, a fim de se adaptarem (interfaces, serviços, conteúdo) de acordo com esses dados de contexto. Aplicações com esse comportamento são conhecidas como aplicações sensíveis ao contexto. Várias infraestruturas de software foram criadas para ajudar no desenvolvimento dessas aplicações. No entanto, foi verificado que a maioria delas não possui um histórico dos dados contextuais, uma vez que os dispositivos móveis são limitados em recursos de armazenamento. Também foi verificado que a maioria delas não é construída levando em conta a privacidade dos dados contextuais, o que pode levar à exposição desses dados sem o consentimento do usuário. Esta dissertação aborda tais tópicos, estendendo uma plataforma de middleware existente que ajuda o desenvolvimento de aplicativos móveis e sensíveis ao contexto. Este trabalho apresenta um serviço denominado COP (Contextual data Offloading service with Privacy Support) e é baseado em: (i) um modelo de contexto, (ii) uma política de privacidade e (iii) em políticas de sincronização de dados. O COP visa armazenar e processar os dados contextuais gerados a partir de vários dispositivos móveis, utilizando o poder computacional da nuvem. Para avaliar este trabalho foi desenvolvida uma aplicação que utiliza tanto a migração como o mecanismo de privacidade dos dados contextuais do COP. Outros dois experimentos foram feitos. O primeiro experimento avaliou o impacto da execução de filtros contextuais no dispositivo móvel e no ambiente remoto, em que foi medido o tempo e gasto energético desse processamento. Nesse experimento foi possível concluir que a migração de dados de um dispositivo móvel para um ambiente remoto é vantajosa. O segundo experimento avaliou o gasto energético para o envio dos dados contextuais.

Este trabalho explora a gerência de segurança e cooperação de aplicações em sistemas distribuídos móveis. Neste contexto, é feito um estudo sobre os diferentes middlewares para ambientes móveis (mobile middleware): suas capacidades de enfrentar os desafios da mobilidade e da segurança. As análises do estudo mostram que esses middlewares devem possuir características que lhes permitem uma melhor adaptação às necessidades das aplicações e à natureza dos ambientes móveis. Os middlewares existentes pouco abordam a questão da segurança. A segurança ainda é um problema complexo que deve ser gerido em todos os níveis de um sistema distribuído móvel, incluindo novos mecanismos. Com base nessa análise, foi desenvolvido um modelo de gerência de segurança que implementa um mecanismo de autenticação mútua, confidencialidade, detecção de intruso e controle de acesso em ambientes móveis. O objetivo é garantir a confiabilidade, a disponibilidade de serviços e a privacidade do usuário através da tecnologia PET - Privacy-Enhancing Tecnologies. A idéia é fundamentada em agentes interceptadores e autoridades de segurança que distribuem tíquetes de segurança e controlam o acesso a recursos e espaços de tuple do ambiente. O estudo de caso apresentou resultados satisfatórios que permitem julgar a pertinência do modelo proposto. O modelo será integrado a um sistema de e-saúde.<br>The work exploits the security management and the cooperation of applications in mobile distributed systems. In this context a study of different mobile middleware is made. The study examines their capacities to face the challenges of mobility and security issues. The analysis shows that the existing middleware has very few approaches on security problems; security is still a complex issue to be managed in all the levels of mobile distributed system including new mechanisms. Based on this analysis, a security management model is developed that implements a mechanism for mutual authentication, confidentiality, intrusion detection, access control of mobile agents in mobile environments, ensures services availability and user privacy, through technology PET (Privacy-Enhancing Technologies). The idea is based on interceptor agents and security authorities that distribute security tickets and control the access to resources and Tuple spaces in mobile environment. The proposed model presents good performance and is integrated to an e-health system: Relationship Management with Chronic Patient GRPC.

Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Informática<br>This dissertation aims to take advantage of the virtues offered by data storage cloud based systems on the Internet, proposing a solution that avoids security issues by combining different providers’ solutions in a vision of a cloud-of-clouds storage and computing. The solution, TSKY System (or Trusted Sky), is implemented as a middleware system, featuring a set of components designed to establish and to enhance conditions for security, privacy, reliability and availability of data, with these conditions being secured and verifiable by the end-user, independently of each provider. These components, implement cryptographic tools, including threshold and homomorphic cryptographic schemes, combined with encryption, replication, and dynamic indexing mecha-nisms. The solution allows data management and distribution functions over data kept in different storage clouds, not necessarily trusted, improving and ensuring resilience and security guarantees against Byzantine faults and at-tacks. The generic approach of the TSKY system model and its implemented services are evaluated in the context of a Trusted Email Repository System (TSKY-TMS System). The TSKY-TMS system is a prototype that uses the base TSKY middleware services to store mailboxes and email Messages in a cloud-of-clouds.

Developers often need to re-engineer distributed applications to address changes in requirements, made only after deployment. Much of the complexity of inspecting and evolving distributed applications lies in their distributed nature, while the majority of mature program analysis and transformation tools works only with centralized software. Inspired by business process re-engineering, in which remote operations can be insourced back in house to restructure and outsource anew, this dissertation brings an analogous approach to the re-engineering of distributed applications. Our approach introduces a novel automatic refactoring---Client Insourcing---that creates a semantically equivalent centralized version of a distributed application. This centralized version is then inspected, modified, and redistributed to meet new requirements. This dissertation demonstrates the utility of Client Insourcing in helping meet the changed requirements in performance, reliability, and security. We implemented Client Insourcing in the important domain of full-stack JavaScript applications, in which both the client and server parts are written in JavaScript, and applied our implementation to re-engineer mobile web applications. Client Insourcing reduces the complexity of inspecting and evolving distributed applications, thereby facilitating their re-engineering. This dissertation is based on 4 conference papers and 2 doctoral symposium papers, presented at ICWE 2019, SANER 2020, WWW 2020, and ICWE 2021.<br>Doctor of Philosophy<br>Modern web applications are distributed across a browser-based client and a remote server. Software developers need to optimize the performance of web applications as well as correct and modify their functionality. However, the vast majority of mature development tools, used for optimizing, correcting, and modifying applications work only with non-distributed software, written to run on a single machine. To facilitate the maintenance and evolution of web applications, this dissertation research contributes new automated software transformation techniques. These contributions can be incorporated into the design of software development tools, thereby advancing the engineering of web applications.

In general, the user experience on each of those scenarios is not adapted to each user’s specific needs, without personalization and integration across scenarios. Moreover, developers usually do not have the right tools to handle that in a standard and generic way. As such, a personalization platform may provide those tools. This kind of platform should be readily available to be used by any developer. Therefore, it must be developed to be available over the Internet. With the advances in IT infrastructure, it is now possible to develop reliable and scalable services running on abstract and virtualized platforms. Those are some of the advantages of cloud computing, which offers a model of utility computing where customers are able to dynamically allocate the resources they need and are charged accordingly. This work focuses on the creation of a cloud-based personalization platform built on a previously developed generic user modeling framework. It provides user profiling and context-awareness tools to third-party developers. A public display-based application was also developed. It provides useful information to students, teachers and others in a university campus as they are detected by Bluetooth scanning. It uses the personalization platform as the basis to select the most relevant information in each situation, while a mobile application was developed to be used as an input mechanism. A user study was conducted to assess the usefulness of the application and to validate some design choices. The results were mostly positive.

MCC (Mobile Cloud Computing) est un candidat très fort pour le NGN (Next Generation Network) qui permet aux utilisateurs mobiles d’avoir une mobilité étendue, une continuité de service et des performances supérieures. Les utilisateurs peuvent s’attendre à exécuter leurs travaux plus rapidement, avec une faible consommation de batterie et à des prix abordables ; mais ce n’est pas toujours le cas. Diverses applications mobiles ont été développées pour tirer parti de cette nouvelle technologie, mais chacune de ces applications possède ses propres exigences. Plusieurs MCA (Mobile Cloud Architectures) ont été proposées, mais aucune n'a été adaptée pour toutes les applications mobiles, ce qui a mené à une faible satisfaction du client. De plus, l'absence d'un modèle d'affaires (business model) valide pour motiver les investisseurs a empêché son déploiement à l'échelle de production. Cette thèse propose une nouvelle architecture de MCA (Mobile Cloud Architecture) qui positionne l'opérateur de téléphonie mobile au cœur de cette technologie avec un modèle d'affaires de recettes. Cette architecture, nommée OCMCA (Operator Centric Mobile Cloud Architecture), relie l'utilisateur d’un côté et le fournisseur de services Cloud (CSP) de l'autre côté, et héberge un cloud dans son réseau. Users can expect to execute their jobs faster, with lower battery consumption and affordable prices; however this is not always the case. Various mobile applications have been developed to take advantage of this new technology, but each application has its own requirements. Several mobile cloud architectures have been proposed but none was suitable for all mobile applications which resulted in lower customer satisfaction. In addition to that, the absence of a valid business model to motivate investors hindered its deployment on production scale. This dissertation proposes a new mobile cloud architecture which positions the mobile operator at the core of this technology equipped with a revenue-making business model. This architecture, named OCMCA (Operator Centric Mobile Cloud Architecture), connects the user from one side and the Cloud Service Provider (CSP) from the other and hosts a cloud within its network. The OCMCA/user connection can utilize multicast channels leading to a much cheaper service for the users and more revenues, lower congestion and rejection rates for the operator. The OCMCA/CSP connection is based on federation, thus a user who has been registered with any CSP, can request her environment to be offloaded to the mobile operator's hosted cloud in order to receive all OCMCA's services and benefits

Abstract The popularity of social networking services emphasises the importance of user communities. As the next evolutionary step, social networking will evolve towards user communities that are dynamically established according to contextual aspects such as the shared location and/or activities of people. In this vision, distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) technologies provide a respectable alternative to the centralised client-server technologies for implementing the upcoming community-centric mobile services. This thesis focuses on the development of enabling techniques and methods for a community-centric mobile service environment and on the evaluation of users’ perceptions and user acceptance of novel community-centric mobile services. The research was carried out by first examining the applicability of different P2P system architectures for implementing the management of user communities. Next, an experimental prototype of a community-centric mobile service environment was implemented. The experimental prototype was used for evaluating the performance of the community-centric mobile service environment and for conducting the user studies of novel community-centric mobile services. The evaluation was conducted in a real deployment environment with test users. The main results are the following: (1) a conceptual analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of P2P group management systems that are implemented using architecturally distinct P2P system architectures; (2) a performance evaluation of a P2P community management system, in which each community is implemented as an independent structured P2P overlay network; (3) a novel community-centric mobile service environment and its core component, a mobile middleware, which enables the use of P2P technologies and context information as part of Web-based applications running on a Web browser; (4) an evaluation of users’ perceptions and user acceptance of novel community-centric mobile services that are related to making a selection of an entertainment premise based on its music style and voting for music in a user community<br>Tiivistelmä Käyttäjäyhteisöiden tärkeys on korostunut sosiaalista verkottumista edistävien palveluiden suosion kautta. Seuraavaksi sosiaalinen verkottuminen tulee laajentumaan yhteisöihin, jotka perustetaan dynaamisesti muun muassa ihmisten yhteisen sijainnin ja/tai toiminnan perusteella. Tulevaisuuden yhteisöllisten mobiilipalveluiden toteutuksessa hajautetut vertaisverkkoteknologiat tarjoavat varteenotettavan vaihtoehdon keskitetyille asiakas-palvelin -teknologioille. Tämä väitöskirjatyö keskittyy kehittämään tarvittavia tekniikoita ja menetelmiä yhteisöllisen mobiilipalveluympäristön toteuttamiseen sekä arvioimaan käyttäjien kokemuksia uusista yhteisöllisistä mobiilipalveluista. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin aluksi arkkitehtuurillisesti erilaisten vertaisverkkojärjestelmien sopivuutta käyttäjäyhteisöjen hallinnan toteutettamiseksi. Seuraavaksi tutkimuksessa toteutettiin kokeellinen prototyyppi yhteisöllisestä mobiilipalveluympäristöstä.
