Abstract:
As a mean to increase the subscriber base, Mobile telecom operators are now trying to target also fixed network subscribers. The main idea is to use the mobile network to provide fixed network rates (cheaper) for the used telecom services when the mobile subscriber is at home and mobile network rates (more expensive) for the used telecom services when the mobile subscriber is not at home. The "home zone" area therefore shall be defined by individual subscriber and the service provider shall be able to determine whether the subscriber is within his home zone. This thesis work investigates the HZB issues and possible solutions, and implements a service prototype thereof exploring user experience of HZB functionality. The thesis report starts with an introduction of related background concepts regarding GSM Mobile Network, Intelligent Network and mobile positioning technologies. Then a detailed technical solution of the HZB service is presented in terms of system requirements, design and implementation. Several major communication protocols in the mobile core network, such as CAP, SMPP and MLP, are involved in the HZB prototype. The prototype is implemented as a framework for future commetial product. Furthermore, some evaluations are conducted to explore the user experience during the call setup phase. Finally, the report discusses potential future work based on the accomplished system prototype and summarizes achievements as well as challenges of the project.

Abstract:

Mobile phones and electronic gadgets on the market today have become more and more powerful, in both processing power and functionalities. Accessing files and documents residing at users’ home networks via a vast amount of devices is therefore anticipated. The current solution to remote home access, i.e. Virtual Private Network (VPN), is not supported on all different types of devices. In particular, limited processing power and memory footprint on mobile devices such as PDAs and cell phones are not suitable for VPN clients that require high processing power during encryption and decryption of data. In addition, setting up VPN on home network is not a straight-forward task that anyone can complete. Regular users do not have knowledge to set up and configure VPN correctly. It is obviously that we need another approach/method to access home network in an easier manner. The specified system, Mobile Home Access, will provide ubiquitous access to the home network independent of network infrastructures, platforms and terminals. This goal has many challenges and obstacles, such as firewall and routing issues as well as compatibility and the restrictions of the well-known networked file system, i.e. Common Internet File System (CIFS). Based on the previous research project, Mobile Home Access will be implemented as web services and written in Java, the platform independent programming language. XML web services offers intercommunication between applications and protocols running on various network infrastructure. Using web services, the networked file system’s services can be exposed to remote clients. The system will operate in two different modes, the reduced-mapping mode for restricted clients (mobile phones, PDA, etc) and the tunneling mode for rich clients (desktop computers, laptop, etc). This thesis will address and try to overcome challenges associated with the tunneling mode in addition to the design of the overall system.

Abstract:
With the fast development of wireless networks and devices, Mobile IP is expected to be used widely so that mobile users can access the Internet anywhere, anytime without interruption. However, some problems, such as firewall traversal and use of private IP addresses, restrict use of Mobile IP. The objective of this thesis is to design original schemes that can enable a mobile node at abroad to access its home network as well as the Internet securely and that can help Mobile IP to be used widely and commercially. Our solutions are secure, efficient, and scalable. They can be implemented and maintained easily. In this thesis, we mainly consider Mobile IPv4, instead of Mobile IPv6. Three research topics are discussed. In each topic, the challenges are investigated and the new solutions are presented. The first research topic solves the firewall traversal problems in Mobile IP. A mobile node cannot access its firewall-protected home network if it fails the authentication by the firewall. We propose that an IPsec tunnel be established between the firewall and the foreign agent for firewall traversal and that an IPsec transport security association be shared by the mobile node and a correspondent node for end-to-end security. The second topic researches further on firewall traversal problems and investigates the way of establishing security associations among network entities. A new security model and a new key distribution method are developed. With the help of the security model and keys, the firewall and the relevant network entities set up IPsec security associations to achieve firewall traversal. A mobile node from a private home network cannot communicate with other hosts with its private home address when it is visiting a public foreign network. A novel and useful solution is presented in the third research topic. We suggest that the mobile node use its Network Access Identifier (NAI) as its identification and obtain a public home address from its home agent. In addition, a new tunnel between the mobile node and its home agent is proposed.

Abstract:

The mobile home, or manufactured home as it is called to day, comprises 25% of all new homes sold today. Although it is such a large portion of the housing market, it is plagued by a social stigma which has undeniably been a part of its history as a building type. Many factors contribute to this problem, including zoning ordinances, federal regulations and financing. All of these issues need to be and are being addressed by the industry, federal and state legislators, and homeowners. The thesis proposes to look at ways of reducing that stigma from yet another perspective, that of design. One challenge is to work within and with current manufacturing processes and legal restriction. This research project begins with a simple question - How might the manufactured home as an existing type be rethought in order to not only better its position as an alternative to the conventional single family home bur also be seen as an alternative for a broader market: in terms of social use: a. redefinition of the family; b. work/living scenarios; c. service/served or work/leisure relationships; in terms of spatial improvements, in terms of land use innovations, If these dwellings were accepted as houses for the middle class and second homes for the upper middle class the result would be a transformation of the genre.

Abstract:
I have spent more than a quarter of a century living outside my homeland of Japan. In recent visits to Japan, I have noticed that my sense of belonging is growing stronger. This has caused me to question whether this is simply nostalgia or something deeper. I wonder whether my prolonged exposure to other cultures has enhanced my appreciation of my own, or whether I am losing my cultural identity and the idea of home is becoming more attractive because it feels familiar and safe. Through my studio work, I seek to juxtapose the present with the past, to examine the role that memory plays in our notions of home, and particularly to discover how my memories influence my emotional response to geographical and cultural dislocation. In this exegesis, I examine the nature of memory and the idea that home is not merely a place on a map. My research investigates whether a particular material associated with a specific place—in my case, wood—can be fundamental to developing a better understanding of who we are, where we come from, and why we call one place home over another.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) protocol enables mobile nodes (MNs) to remain connected to other correspondent nodes (CNs) while roaming the IPv6 Internet. Home and correspondent registrations are essential parts of the MIPv6 protocol, whereby MNs register their care-of addresses (CoAs) with their home agents (HAs) and with their CNs, respectively. Security provision for home and correspondent registrations is a fundamental part of the MIPv6 protocol and has been an open research issue since the early stages of the protocol. This thesis examines state-of-the-art protocols for securing home and correspondent registrations in MIPv6 networks. The strengths and weaknesses of these protocols are discussed. The investigation of these protocols leads to the proposal of an enhanced home registration protocol and a family of correspondent registration protocols. The Enhanced Home Registration (EHR) protocol extends the basic home registration protocol defined in MIPv6 to support the location authentication of MNs to their HAs. The EHR is based on novel ideas of segmenting the IPv6 address space, using a symmetric CGA-based technique for generating CoAs, and applying concurrent CoAs reachability tests. As a result, EHR is able to reduce the likelihood of a malicious MN being successful in luring an HA to flood a third party with useless packets using MIPv6. In addition, EHR enables HAs to help in correspondent registrations by confirming MNs' CoAs to CNs. Simulation studies of EHR have shown that it only introduces a marginal increase in the registration delay, but a significant increase in the signalling overhead as a cost of supporting the location authentication of MNs.The thesis also proposes a family of correspondent registration protocols. These protocols rely on the assistance of home networks to confirm the MNs' ownership of the claimed HoAs and CoAs. The protocols consist of three phases: a creation phase, an update phase and a deletion phase. Informal and formal protocol analyses have confirmed the protocols' correctness and satisfaction of the required security properties. The protocols have been simulated extensively and the results show that they produce lower registration delay and a reduction in the signalling overhead during update and deletion phases. This is at the cost of a varying increase, depending on the protocol variant, in the registration delay and signalling overhead during the creation phase.

Abstract:
In this thesis we consider the problem of searching for an intruder in arbitrary networks. A team of mobile software agents is deployed to capture the intruder (i.e., a virus) and decontaminate the network. These agents follow a common protocol, derived from the Breadth-First Search (BFS) algorithm, that is independent of the intruders' speed or knowledge and is designed to prevent any further re-contamination. To measure the efficiency of our protocols and find the ones which give the best results, we conduct experiments on arbitrary synchronous and asynchronous networks. In each experiment, we study a different aspect of the impact multiple starting locations and different levels of visibility have on minimizing the number of mobile software agents required to decontaminate the network and the time used in the process.

Abstract:
As the medium cost of conventional housing rises, many people unable to incur such an expense look for alternative forms of adequate housing. In rural areas surrounding Bowling Green, Kentucky, several families have utilized the mobile home as a base to expand, embellish, and personalize, creating a larger more conventional-looking home. Many of these altered homes possess gabled roofs, rock exterior walls, and expansive interior space. Of primary concern is: why have these families undertaken a project of this nature? As material culture scholars and folklorists examine our built environment, they find relationship between construction and the builders. What can the altered mobile home tell us about these individual builders? A contextual analysis examining the surrounding landscape, economic dilemmas, and personal aesthetics and values help elucidate each altered mobile home. Also, by examining the individual builder’s work technique, materials, and values associated with housing, one can understand how each mobile home is a direct reflection of its owner. Since the mobile home’s creation, the public’s conception of the form has led to claims that it is not a housing form, but rather an accessory for the automobile. Steadfast values associated with housing have not adhered to the image of the mobile home. Because of this ambiguity, the mobile home is an ideal form for individuals to mold and alter, thereby creating a form imbued with personal aesthetics and personal values concerning housing. These ideas are examined through analysis of four families.

Abstract:
Poverty is an important socio-economic problem with serious negative consequences for consumers worldwide. Currently, there are approximately 57 million Americans considered as the "marginal poor" and 37 million Americans categorized as the "extreme poor" (Newman and Chen 2007). The nuances between these two different forms of impoverishment as well as other forms of poverty (e.g., the urban poor, the rural poor, the immigrant poor) highlight the multi-dimensional and dynamic nature of poverty with economic, social, cultural, motivational, and even political aspects (Chakravarti 2006). Despite the importance of this research domain, little research in marketing has examined multiple faces of poverty and the ways impoverished consumers socially construct the meaning of deprivation. This research offers the first in-depth ethnographic investigation exploring different social constructions of poverty and multiple social identities adopted by the poor within the same geographically bounded setting. While much of the current conceptualization of poverty in the consumer research literature explore poverty from a structural perspective and assume that the poor share a collective social identity, I suggest an alternate conceptualization of poverty that includes the poor consumer's coping strategies and resources, perceptions of various forms of deprivation, and agency construction through five distinct social identities. The Association for Consumer Research through the Sheth Foundation (http://www.acrweb.org) and the American Marketing Association (http://www.marketingpower.com) provided financial support for this research in the form of dissertation grants.

Abstract:
Drifter-style tourism in Asia has become a sanitised and institutionalised tourism alternative. Similar to its counterparts on other continents, it now represents a curious mix of rebellion and conformity, rite of passage and a way of life. Over the last thirty years it has developed its own tourism myth and spawned a mobile subculture of Western travellers. This travelling subculture seeks experiences and insights into other cultures beyond the reach of conventional mass tourism and perpetuates the myth of the traveller as an intrepid explorer. As it has evolved, the subculture has begun to appeal to a far wider cross-section of Western society than ever before and has become a mass phenomenon itself. Contrary to mass tourism, it offers not a holiday but an experiential physical and psychological journey for those inclined to go. Its effect on the traveller is of an existential rather than transitory nature and has the potential to significantly alter the future course of an individual's life. With rapidly increasing numbers. the subculture now represents a viable market in its own right. one that fits in nicely with a balanced tourism product. However, development of this tourism alternative is continuously being undermined by the cannibalisation of its destination sites by other tourism sectors. The existence of a flourishing subcultural centre frequently invites a "hostile take-over" of local tourism structures by outside operators and competing tourism sectors. The thesis will argue that Western travellers now represent an institutionalised alternative to mass tourism and, as such, comprise a significant part of the international tourism market. It will further assert that for a given destination to achieve a balanced tourism product and to maximise economic returns, the ongoing cannibalisation of subcultural destinations by other tourism sectors is both unnecessary and undesirable.

Wells, John Dowling. "A Network Mobility Survey and Comparison with a Mobile IP Multiple Home Address Extension." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36459.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the paucity of research on network mobility with a taxonomy and a quantitative comparison on a real test bed of existing and forthcoming network mobility solutions. Broadly, network mobility solutions can be divided into two broad categories, intra-domain and inter-domain solutions. The two are distinct enough to warrant separate solutions. Network mobility solutions can also be divided into four catogories according to their implementation, (i) Mobile IP-based solutions, (ii) Mobile IP Mobile Routing, (iii) intra-domain routing protocols, and (iv) Mobile IP Foreign Agent-based solutions. This latter division by implementation serves as a useful starting point for a discussion and study of these protocols. The qualitative and quantitive comparisons presented here yield two "winning" solutions, Mobile IP with Network Address Translation (NAT) and Mobile IP Mobile Routing, both based on Mobile IP, the draft standard for Internet mobility. The two were chosen because they are the only solutions fit for production networks, not necessarily because they are the best performing solutions. Indeed, nearly all of the other solutions are promising alternatives and some, such as mobile ad hoc network (MANET) routing protocols and the solutions based on the next generation Internet (IPv6) version of Mobile IP, are particularly so. One of the solutions uses a novel extension for Mobile IP, the Multiple Home Address extension, developed and specified in this thesis, that turns a Mobile IP mobile node into a mobile router able to support dynamically sizing mobile networks while using the existing Mobile IP infrastructure.

Abstract:

Mobile telephony technology like GSM made portable telephony a possibility. The arising and development of the Internet made a revolutionary change to communication and interchange of information. Bluetooth wireless technology revolutionizes personal connectivity by providing freedom from wired connections. Combining these technologies together brings the concept of Mobile@Home of Ericsson.

Mobile@Home is a fixed-mobile convergence concept using the fixed network to carry present and future mobile services (e.g. voice, video, mail and Internet access) all the way to the home or office. By combining the high bandwidth of the fixed access network with the wireless technology of Bluetooth, Mobile@Home makes it possible to deliver high bandwidth to the mobile phone. Mobile@Home requires a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone and a Bluetooth enabled HBS (Home Base Station), placed at the home or office. By means of fast IP access (ADSL, cable modem etc.) the HBS connects into the standard mobile core network through a HBSC (Home Base Station Controller).

The purpose of this thesis is the generation of simulated traffic between the HBS and HBSC and to analyze its behavior. This primary involves generation of signaling through an internal protocol, provided by Ericsson, for management and call control, and generation of GSM EFR (Enhanced Full Rate) voice streams over the RTP (Real Time Protocol) protocol. The simulation will consist of both the HBS and MS (Mobile Station). A set of HBS: s with attached MS will call one another through the HBSC. In this assignment only the GSM signaling will be considered because of time and scope limitations. The goal is to validate the RTP traffic generated towards the HBSC. Parameters like packet loss, packet delay and erroneous packets will be analyzed.

Abstract:
This thesis examines whether residing in a mobile home predicts higher rates of psychological distress. Using combined data from the General Social Survey (1994-2006), I differentiate housing into four distinct categories: mobile homes, conventional homes, apartments, and townhouses. After looking extensively at the history and experience of residing in a mobile home, particularly when viewed through a social stress theory lens, I hypothesize that mobile home residents should have higher levels of psychological distress after socioeconomic variables are controlled. While mobile home residents have the highest raw scores for psychological distress (a composite of depression and anxiety), these did not hold significance after the inclusion of the socioeconomic and control variables. Conversely, social network ties were stronger in the mobile home community than in other types of housing and this remained so after socioeconomic variables were included. This thesis supports Shelton, et al.â s (1983) findings that mobile home residents are in many ways more similar to their conventional home counterparts than those living in apartments. It also supports social stress theoryâ s assertion that social support is associated with better mental health and that socioeconomic factors are paramount when predicting levels of psychological distress.

Finding a desired off-campus home could be a difficult task for incoming students at K-State. This cross platform mobile application can help students in this task. This mobile application will serve as platform for students and home owners to find, list and review a property. Users can create their personal account and manage their profile and properties they listed. They can post multiple property listings with the key details and these listings will be visible to all the other users. To avoid spam and repetitive postings there is an address verification system in place. While posting a property listing the address is verified with Google maps database. If Google maps fail to identify the address or if that address is already listed, the user will not be allowed to list that property. Users can see all the property listings and their details including a Google map location image, a link to navigate to the address, contact details of the owner, reviews of other users. Users can rate a property from 1(low) to 5(high) along with an optional review. The review and rating can help other user to select a desired place to live. The user interface is developed with web technologies and using Cordova the same code can be used to convert it into a mobile application for both iOS and Android which makes this application platform independent and easily available.

Mthelebofu, Gontse. "Mobile technology strategies incorporated in teaching and learning activities to support English Home Language." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/67825.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate which mobile technology integration strategies are incorporated in activities to support English Home Language teaching and learning. This study is important because even though technology is used daily, inside and outside the classroom, it is not clear at which cognitive level these activities are being implemented. The study was conducted in two private secondary schools, as a comparative case study. Mobile technology-based activities in Grade 9 English Home Language classes were observed and analysed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the principal, IT specialist and English Home Language teacher from each school, observations of activities, as well as focus group discussions with six learners from each school. The conceptual framework combines the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition (SAMR) model with the revised Bloom’s taxonomy. The eight observed activities were analysed and presented in the conceptual framework using the Activity Theory. Technology was integrated seamlessly in both English Home Language classrooms for communication, collaboration, presentations, investigations, analysis and research work. The two schools have similar supportive environments for implementation of technology in teaching, even though School B has a slight advantage in weekly community of practice sessions, training and technical support. The results indicate that activities in both schools were on the higher levels of conceptual framework, with a slightly higher approach identified in School B. In this study the results cannot be generalised as data were not collected over a long period of time, the number of activities observed was limited and the study was restricted to two schools only. However, it is evident that, in a supportive environment, technology can be very beneficial to, and even redefine, teaching and learning.

Liang, Po-Chou. "Cost-effective design of real-time home healthcare telemonitoring based on mobile cloud computing." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2016. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/809778/.

Full text
Abstract:
The rise in both ageing and chronic disease populations has highlighted a pressing demand for better access to quality healthcare at home. Meanwhile, studies have shown that home-based treatments for older patients as a substitute for hospital care can produce better clinical outcomes and reduce healthcare expenditure. However, there remains a considerable question relating to the low adoption rate of home telehealthcare technologies due to a lack of robust evidence for their cost-effectiveness. In light of both the epoch-making advancements in smartphone-centric technologies and the pervasive uptake of smartphones, we set up as our core objective the cost-effective design of a real-time home healthcare telemonitoring system based on mobile cloud computing. Our second objective was to develop a simulation environment to produce robust evidence for cost-effectiveness of a telemonitoring system so as to explore technology choices in different settings prior to moving to full-scale trials on a more scientific basis. A proof-of-concept system consisting of three main monitoring functions, namely vital sign, safety (for fall detection) and movement pattern monitoring (for real-time indoor location tracking), was developed based on a smartphone. With the exception of vital sign monitoring design which was not regarded as a search problem, the results of the other two were promising with sensitivity and specificity for successfully detected falls and recognised non-fall activities being both 95.5% and an average estimation error of 0.47 metres for real-time indoor location tracking. A large number of patients and their activities of daily living, as well as real-world like telehealthcare scenarios involving a number of different stakeholders and telemonitoring interventions, were modelled and created through simulations. The cloud-based components of our proposed telemonitoring system were also modelled and simulated together with our proposed forward-looking unused capacity-based auto scaling (FLUCAS) algorithm to enhance system performance and scalability and reduce the costs. Economic evaluations of our proposed system were conducted based on a comparative cost-effectiveness analysis approach and the results of our simulation experiments. Although exploratory, this study not only offers some insight into the great potential of smartphone-centric technologies in support of a cost-effective design of real-time home healthcare telemonitoring, but also provides justifiable evidence for cost-effectiveness of telemonitoring.

Shozi, Nobubele Angel. "Factors affecting the use of mobile devices for remote data collection in home community based care." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1012621.

Full text
Abstract:
The health care systems of developing countries, which are already weak, have to carry an additional strain brought on by the burden of infectious diseases. This added strain means that the health care provided is not of the highest quality. The use of home community based care (HCBC) was introduced as an attempt to provide basic health care services to people through the services of community health care workers (CHCW). With the development of HCBC in developing countries and the CHCW playing a vital role in ensuring that the lives of people living with diseases are improved, the need for information and communication technology (ICT) solutions is increased. The information that is collected by the CHCW is paper-based and it cannot be analysed and used efficiently and effectively. This study embraces the adoption of a socio-technical perspective when an ICT solution is introduced in an environment. A socio-technical perspective focuses on three dimensions: the user, the environment and the technology used. These three need to be in coherence to ensure that the technology is used effectively by the user within the environment. Therefore the objective of this study is to identify a list of socio-technical factors that affect CHCWs when they are using mobile phones for data collection purposes in home community based care. In order to achieve this it was necessary to understand how the socio-technical subsystems of the HCBC environment are constituted. The study followed a qualitative approach, including interviews and observations, to collect the data which will best enable the researcher to understand the home community based care environment, its people and the use of the technology to collect data in this environment, in particular mobile phones. A qualitative content analysis approach was followed to analyse the data and constitute a list of factors affecting the use of mobile devices for remote data collection in home community based care. It is hoped that this research will assist to inform the design of appropriate mobile health applications to both ease the burden of CHCWs (i.e. it should be faster and easier to use than paper) and improve the healthcare service provided through enabling access to patient records to all partners in the care continuum.

Abstract:

Hamm, Julian J. "Technology-assisted healthcare : exploring the use of mobile 3D visualisation technology to augment home-based fall prevention assessments." Thesis, Brunel University, 2018. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/16422.

Full text
Abstract:
Falls often cause devastating injuries which precipitate hospital and long-term care admission and result in an increased burden on health care services. Fall prevention interventions are used to overcome fall risk factors in an ageing population. There is an increasing need for technology-assisted interventions to reduce health care costs, whilst also lessening the burden that an ageing population increasingly has on health care services. Research efforts have been spent on reducing intrinsic fall risk factors (i.e. functional ability deficits and balance impairments) in the older adult population through the use of technology-assisted interventions, but relatively little effort has been expended on extrinsic risk factors (i.e. unsuitable environmental conditions and lack of assistive equipment use), considering the drive for healthcare outside of the clinical setting into the patients' home. In the field of occupational therapy, the extrinsic fall-risk assessment process (EFAP) is a prominent preventive intervention used to promote independent living and alleviate fall risk factors via the provision of assistive equipment prescribed for use by patients in their home environment. Currently, paper-based forms with measurement guidance presented in the form of 2D diagrams are used in the EFAP. These indicate the precise points and dimensions on a furniture item that must be measured as part of an assessment for equipment. However, this process involves challenges, such as inappropriate equipment prescribed due to inaccurate measurements being taken and recorded from the misinterpretation of the measurement guidance. This is largely due to the poor visual representation of guidance that is provided by existing paper-based forms, resulting in high levels of equipment abandonment by patients. Consequently, there is a need to overcome the challenges mentioned above by augmenting the limitations of the paper-based approach to visualise measurement guidance for equipment. To this end, this thesis proposes the use of 3D visualisation technology in the form of a novel mobile 3D application (Guidetomeasure) to visualise guidance in a well-perceived manner and support stakeholders with equipment prescriptions. To ensure that the artefact is a viable improvement over its 2D predecessor, it was designed, developed and empirically evaluated with patients and clinicians alike through conducting five user-centred design and experimental studies. A mixed-method analysis was undertaken to establish the design, effectiveness, efficiency and usability of the proposed artefact, compared with conventional approaches used for data collection and equipment prescription. The research findings show that both patients and clinicians suggest that 3D visualisation is a promising development of an alternative tool that contains functionality to overcome existing issues faced in the EFAP. Overall, this research makes a conceptual contribution (secondary) to the research domain and a software artefact (primary) that significantly improves practice, resulting in implications and recommendations for the wider healthcare provision (primary).

Abstract:
The ageing of Europe's population is a crucial challenge for the 21st century. Today, the mean life expectancy in Sweden is 83 years for women and 78 for men. Ageing well is a frequently used process, describing the objectives of future elderly care and rehabilitation. Enabling elderly people to live longer and independently in their homes is one goal for society as a whole. Providing health care of high quality, on equal terms for all citizens, is an important political goal in Sweden. It is a great challenge for providers to achieve elderly care of high quality and to develop products, services and technologies that meet the needs of elderly people. There is an assumption that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) will enhance quality of life. Additionally "electronic accessibility" is one of the goals for the European Information Society to support and enable self-determination and mobility. Dimensions of empowerment such as participation and ability to influence/control one's life situation imply an approach to health care with the patient/client in focus. The aim of this thesis was to explore different dimensions of empowerment and an empowerment methodology for elderly persons in home health care, and if ICT was a useful tool in this process. A multi-method approach was used that included interviews with patients with experience of rehabilitation, interviews with elderly persons with homecare and safety alarms, exploring their needs in relation to empowerment dimensions such as autonomy, self-determination, participation and mobility, an intervention where a mobile safety alarm was tested by elderly individuals and reflective learning workshops with front line staff in home care. Different methods of analysis were used, including Grounded Theory, Latent Content analysis and Constructivist Grounded Theory together with reflections. One of the overall findings was that all patients/clients that participated in these studies had not reflected upon whether it would be possible or not, to influence care and rehabilitation. The results indicate low patient participation in and influence on, the rehabilitation process. Elderly people perceived freedom of movement as a prerequisite for participation and in one of the studies the elderly participants felt that they could influence care and be participating in one aspect, but they still wanted more support with, for example, being more physically active, like walking out doors. The overall findings show a genuine patient/client desire, but limited possibilities to influence care and rehabilitation. Put another way, patients/clients want to have influence and participate authentically, but they do not exactly know how to achieve this. All patients/clients were positive towards the professionals in care and rehabilitation. They were really grateful and admired the professionals and also identified themselves with how stressed and how overloaded with work the professionals were. This might mean that the concept interdependency is looked upon as more important than real autonomy. The patients/clients tried to be compliant and this can be understood as "learning unpretentiousness". After reflecting upon their situation they were more able to articulate their needs that were not responded to or taken care of. When ICT, as an empowering tool, was implemented, findings showed that elderly people experienced the use of a mobile safety alarm as empowering. The mobile safety alarm gave them the freedom of movement needed to be physically active and still feel safe. The positioning device was not experienced as a threat to their integrity. Mobility and safety were experienced as more important than privacy. The research findings indicate that in order to improve home health care services from the patient's/client's perspective, we need to work with the triads of participation, empowerment and mobile Information and Communication Technology. We need to critically and creatively reflect on what clients say and then try to respond positively to what we learn and shift the focus away from ‘what's life like?' and ‘what should life be like?', towards the explicit action question, ‘what needs to be done to make life as good as it can be?' Real improvement is more likely to be sustained with some changes in accountability.

Abstract:
Background: To be able to live independently, older persons can use technology-based health communication (HC) for support, guidance, and contact with health care professionals within their home environment. Informal caregivers who assist in different situations can also find support in their caring role using technology. The study of mobile technologies is an important research area in gerontechnology. Nevertheless, there is a gap of research in technology-based HC utilized by older persons, including preferences related to cognitive impairment (CI) in a home environment. Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to define the concept and describe experiences of HC within the home environment from a gerontechnological perspective. The aim of Study I was to identify and construct the meaning of HC from the perspective of older persons in need of care in the home environment and their informal caregivers. The aim of Study II was to describe how older persons with CI experienced technology-based HC through the use of a mobile application in order to facilitate a sense of coherence. Method: This thesis has a naturalistic approach. In Study I, the evolutionary model of concept analysis was used, based on a systematic literature review including 29 studies. In Study II, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 older persons with CI. The transcripts were analyzed with a deductive thematic analysis. Findings: The defining attributes of the concept HC identified in Study I were: Resources of the recipient, Influence on decisions, and Advantages of tailored information. These attributes led to the following descriptive definition of HC: Tailored information, based on needs and resources of the recipient influence care decisions. The findings of Study II resulted in an overall theme: A technology that supports but creates challenges. Further, the analysis yielded the following three themes, with associated subthemes: Making sense of mobile technologies, Mastering mobile technologies, and Added value to use mobile technologies. Conclusion: Technology-based HC utilized by older persons and their informal caregivers within the home environment emphasizes suiting needs, capacity and preferences to be considered useful. Influences of the context, the home environment also needs to be taken into account when developing technology-based HC and mobile technologies for this purpose.

Abstract:
The overall aim of this licentiate thesis was to describe views and reasoning about the use of mobile distance-spanning technology (MDST) in health care at home, from the perspectives of persons in need of health care and general practitioners (GP). A descriptive qualitative approach was chosen to achieve the overall aim. Individual qualitative research interviews and qualitative group research interviews were used for data collection. Qualitative content analysis and qualitative thematic content analysis were used for data analysis. The findings show that persons in need of health care at home recognized MDST as being similar to the technology used at hospital. They described the MDST at home as acceptable but still in its infancy. The limited experiences in using MDST led to some persons doubting the reliability of the examinations routinely carried out at home instead of at hospital. When using the MDST, more examinations can be performed at home but there was some overconfidence concerning the possibility of what MDST can achieve. They saw the staff as users of the MDST, and the MDST should not be used by the persons or their family members. The MDST was seen as possible for distance communication but personal meetings with a GP or a nurse also have to be possible. The GPs must know the person concerned before making decisions at a distance. The persons felt that as long as it is easy to go to the healthcare centre or to the hospital the examinations should be done there, but if they are in a bad condition and there are long distances, then examinations at home become relevant. In an emergency situation, going to hospital rather than staying at home was inevitable and obvious. The MDST at home was described as a part of a chain which can be efficient only when other parts of the chain are taken good care of. When the MDST was assumed to be safe and secure then it could be used on a permanent basis at home, but this decision had to be made by DNs and GPs. The GPs reasoned that the MDST should be used with caution. There is a professional caution, which is based on the GPs' professional experiences, responsibilities and skills. Human meetings were seen as important for performing secure judgments and as the basis for health care, but some meetings can be replaced by virtual meetings. A virtual meeting could be useful for the patients and their families but it depends on their expectations. It could benefit them but there is also an overconfidence concerning what MDST can do. The GPs reasoned about the MDST in general and the usability of different diagnostic tools. The MDST was described as being not yet fully developed. Sometimes the MDST could support the GPs' decisions, but when handling very complicated cases, meeting the patient and understanding his or her context was seen as highly important. Expanded access to patient records facilitates the GPs work but the patient's integrity has to be ensured. It is easy for nurses to do more during home visits, but there must be an agreement between the nurse and the GP regarding how to handle the responsibility. The results in this thesis indicate that the participants attach both positive values about MDST as well as believing that some tools have no value at all. This is important when attempting to understand what is important for persons in need of health care and for GPs benefit when planning health care at home for the future.

Abstract:
Research Question: how are Lithuanian international long-haul truck drivers’ livelihoods constructed in terms of work, home, and everyday life? Research Problem and significance. The aim of this research is to look at work, home, and everyday life in the context of mobility and mobile livelihoods in Lithuanian international long-haul truckers. Portrayals of truckers in media and pop culture are often negative or sensationalized, including stories about truck accidents, smuggling, immoral behaviors, or problems with the law. This research is a response to such perceptions, motivated by the fact that there is no qualitative research on truck drivers in Lithuania. Research Tasks 1. Create a theoretical base for analyzing and interpreting mobile lives using various theoretical approaches on mobility, place, home, community, and boundaries. 2. Present and analyze empirical work from the field of Lithuanian long-haul truck drivers based on emic frameworks of ‘kasdienybė’ and ‘namai’. 3. Apply theoretical approach of mobile livelihoods along with emic frameworks of ‘kasdienybė’ and ‘namai’ from the Lithuanian case toward an analysis of Cameroon long-haul truck drivers’ work-lives. Methods. Fieldwork conducted with Lithuanian international long-haul truck drivers who spent 5-6 days or more on the road at a time, with just 2-4 days per month ‘at home’ (in Lithuania). Abstract:
The objectives of this study has been to examine the techniques available for enabling home automation via mobile control (for instance via a smartphone) in order to facilitate the user's role in contributing to the upgrade of the present power-grid, but also to treat the matter of which of the techniques that will probably be of most importance for the future of the smart home, and how an implementation of a mobile application for remote home controlling could be developed. The investigation was primarily conducted through a comprehensive feasibility study of information gathering, comparison of the pros and cons of different networking techniques, and investigation of suitable development environments based on the availability of open developer APIs, availability of product solutions and support, and the cost of development tools for both development and system testing. The investigation has shown that there is currently no clear winner among the networking techniques in this area, although Zigbee, Z-Wave and Wi-Fi are the strongest candidates to gain large market shares. There is also no certainty that any technology will play a much greater role than the others since the techniques may complement each other because of their strength in different areas. The investigation also showed that as for a development environment the product solution developed by the Swedish company Telldus (called Tellstick) is relatively cheap and simple to use to get started with home automation, and that they encourage third party development by offering two open APIs for application development.

Abstract:
In order to leverage the use of various modalities such as audio-visual-touch in instilling learning behaviour, we present an intuitive approach of annotation based hapto-audio-visual interaction with the traditional digital learning materials such as eBooks. By integrating the traditional home entertainment system and respective media in the user's reading experience combined with haptic interfaces, we examine whether such augmentation of modalities influence the user's reading experience in terms of attention, entertainment and retention. The proposed Haptic E-Book (HE-Book) system leverages the haptic jacket, haptic arm band as well as haptic sofa interfaces to receive haptic emotive signals wirelessly in the form of patterned vibrations of the actuators and expresses the learning material by incorporating audio-video based augmentation in order to pave ways for intimate reading experience in the popular eBook platform. We have designed and developed desktop, mobile/tablet based HE-Book system as well as a semi-automated annotation authoring tool. Our system also supports multimedia based diverse quiz augmentations, which can help in learning tracking. We have conducted quantitative and qualitative tests using the developed prototype systems. We have adopted the indirect objective based performance analysis methodology, which is commonly used for multimedia based learning investigation. The user study shows that, there is a positive tendency of accepting multimodal interactions including haptics with traditional eBook reading experience. Though our limited number of laboratory tests reveal, that haptics can be an influencing media in eBook reading experience, but it requires large scale real life tests to provide a concluding remarks.

Tremoulet, Andrée. "Policy Responses to the Closure of Manufactured Home Parks in Oregon." PDXScholar, 2010. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/304.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a case study about policy responses to a specific form of gentrification at the urban fringe: the closure of manufactured home parks in Oregon. The study analyzes the following research questions: (a) What factors affected the quantity and distribution of manufactured home parks? (b) Why did parks close? (c) How did the state legislature respond and why? (d) What are the likely impacts of the state response? A wide variety of sources (e.g., key informant interviews, observations of meetings and public hearings, focus groups of park residents, archival materials and secondary data about manufactured home parks) are employed to investigate a phenomenon imbedded in its context.Parks subject to development pressures, as evidenced by their location in an area experiencing population growth and within an Urban Growth Boundary, were significantly more likely to close than other parks. Manufactured home parks were replaced by compact, mixed-use development in urban or urbanizing areas--smart growth. Based on this evidence, this study concludes that gentrification, in the form of park closures, is integral to Oregon's process of metropolitan restructuring. In the wake of mounting publicity about park closures, the 2007 Oregon legislature adopted legislation that supported two ameliorating strategies: (a) reduce the harm caused to displaced manufactured homeowners through financial assistance, and (b) preserve parks where possible through enabling resident purchases from willing sellers. Who pays for the costs of this legislative package and preemption of local ordinances were the most contested issues. This research is one of the first to analyze gentrification in urban fringe areas. To understand the economic dynamics, it applies rent gap theory to the special case of divided asset ownership. It explores the likely efficacy of two types of policy remedies. Finally, by establishing park closures as a form of gentrification related to metropolitan restructuring, this case study raises the question of whether policies could support a kind of metropolitan restructuring that does not take the toll on people and places exacted by gentrification.

This thesis presents the dynamic external Home Agent (x-HA) assignment for mobile Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The proposed architecture is based on the IPsec-based VPN proposed by the IETF for mobile users. The IETF solution, however, leads to two questions: where should we put the x-HA and how should we trust the x-HA? We propose to assign the x-HA dynamically so the handoff latency and end-to-end latency could be reduced significantly. Based on Diameter Mobile IPv4 application, we also propose a technique such that the x-HA can be associated with the VPN securely. In addition, the registrations with x-HA and internal HA (i-HA) are concurrently accomplished. The proposed technique is implemented in a mobile VPN testbed. Performance analysis based on empirical experiments is discussed.

In recent years, the universality and using rate of the mobile devices have been increased, which leads many commercial investing in it. The intelligent control of home appliance is one of the most popular tepies in relative fields. Most people have a smart phone due to the advances of relative technologies. The benefits of using mobile devices are not only in the remotes control of all appliances, but also have no need to consider the placement of remote controls. In order to solve these problems in this thesis, the intelligent home appliances control system has been developed through the combination of the mobile device and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth transimission with the 8051 chip control circuitry. In addition, one other important problem has to be considered is whether, the users need to relative control home appliances by mobile devices and the comespemcling cost issue for appliance manufacture. In this study, we build up the correspondling control circuits into a plugin module to integrate new home appliances and remote control by mobile devices. The users with new home appliances can buy the proposed remote module according to their requirements. The manufacturers of new home appliances only need to add a pluggable socket to combine with remote module, and therefore cost reduction for manufacturing new home appliances can be expected.

In the conventional IP protocol, whenever a mobile device moves to a different network, it must change its IP address to communicate with other nodes in the Internet. Mobile IP protocol keeps mobile nodes online without changing theirs IP addresses while changing the attachment points. The packets destined to MNs are relayed by their HAs. However, once the only one HA fails, all MNs managed by the HA will not receive packets normally. In the paper, we propose a novel protocol with multiple MAs where only double mobility bindings are maintained in the whole system. When an HA is failed, its backup HA can take over it in a short time without fetching the bindings from other places. Besides, we also consider the load balancing between these HAs during HA takeover and recovery. Through the simulation and analyses, we found that our method has less registration overheads, better MN-scalability, less sensitivity on MN mobility, more fault-tolerance robustness, and less takeover time than others.

Display is an extension of artist''s thought. A good exhibition is able to resonate and reach an excellent interaction with the visitors. At the same time, the exhibition can provides visitors as a places to think over, mediums to contact with arts, and the opportunities to interact with artists. These are also part of educational behaviors. However, there are many problems need to be faced such as transportation problems, remote districts, the lack of information, or some other related factors. How to change display type in order to suit for those people who cannot go into the art galleries is a challenge task. Recently, we can see there are a lot of groups and artists expend display sites to other substitute spaces and bring up different thoughts about the way to display. With the diversification to field of art, the subject matter is no longer how to show the works, furnish and plan the routes, but to come up with ideas of how to immerse the design into different exhibition, what kind of design methods can change the situation, and how to arouse the visitors'' attention and resonate in their hearts. The display should consider more local situation than just a space but a place that may become a strong relationship between the art-viewers and the works of the artists. This design was going to study display and design, space filed, audiences'' perception, mobile imagination, and authentic mobile and think about the previous development of display space and the possibility of continuous design. Also, to discuss the possible space change and the works placement needing attention by mobile frame, material and structure, and preservation works. Based on the above study, we precede a design concept and operation design in order to study the effects of possibility of the space changing to audience, to integrate the way of design display space, to verify the variable of open spaces, to create methods of construction of the imagined mobile spaces. Hence, we derive with two possibilities. One is for mobility (base on truck) and the other is for a long term display which is a mobile display space cubes (type changed) with a purpose of developing the possibilities of mobile display site for different area of people to visit.

Mobile devices have been very popular these days and play an important role in our lives. Home care becomes more and more important due to the rapid increase of aging population. Therefore, using mobile technologies to improve the quality of home care becomes a serious issue. The first step is to provide a tool that allows the users to tell the mobile devices what his home environment looks like. In general, if you want to own or make your own home indoor map, you need to spend the time or request the professionals to help in measuring and drawing. In this paper, we use iOS to develop an interactive home map decorating APP that has a feature of easy operation, intuitively clear functions, and receive and transmit function of network remote database. It allows the users not to have the expertise, and they can simply make a rough but beautiful indoor map, as well as experience the differences between mobile devices and computers. Through the combination of making indoor map and indoor positioning techniques, users can initially apply to the monitoring of home care. We also combine Google Maps to calculate the real coordinates in order to combine indoor positioning and other technologies, which could develop the real mobile home care in the future, and thus, derive more applications in different fields.

In this thesis, we propose an enhancement of Mobile IP called MIP with HA Handover (HH-MIP) to enjoy most of the advantages of Route Optimization MIP (ROMIP) but with only a small increase of signaling overhead. In HH-MIP, the concept of Temporary HA (THA) is proposed and the mobile host registers the new CoA with its THA rather than its original HA. Moreover, HH-MIP adopts an aggressive approach in selecting the THA for an MH, i.e. whenever an MH is moving away from HA or previous THA, the MH triggers the handover of THA. Simulation results demonstrate that HH-MIP enjoys small handoff latency as well as routing efficiency and the number of control packets generated in HH-MIP is significantly less than that in ROMIP.

As the time goes by and with the renovation of technology, human beings have demands of higher living quality. The key factors lie in the information technology and the environment. In order to attain the goal of controlling home appliances via home automation system, the IA products on the market at the present time are developed in several ways. The new functions are being developed on traditional home appliances. New types of IA products uses the method that by means of either wireless network or using a PDA connected with a mobile phone to communicate with the PC at home and then the PC will control the home-appliance network. However, this solution is not essentially enough for people nowadays. It is due to the limits that whether PDAs have accesses to network or not, the PCs at home can only be used at the fixed place, and chores of setting up network. These limits have become the factors hinder the E-generation people from the satisfaction of pursuing speedy convenience. Therefore, the increasingly prevalent high-tech wireless communication equipment—cell phone—provides us with a good solution; that is, the integration of the technology of mobile communication and the system of home automation. Thus, it is no longer a dream in 2004 that the perfection of Mobile-Communication-Based Remote Control System For Home Automation. This system is making the best use of the features of a cell phone—light and convenient. In addition, almost every person has at least one cell phone at hand. The SMS of mobile phone can be used to send instant text-message to the improved home-automation system at home. As a result, the infrared ray home appliances, for instance, TV, air conditioners and so on, can be controlled remotely and setup. Thus, home appliances can be controlled easily, conveniently, instantly and monitored efficiently. On the purpose of making users have more convenient access to this system, as for the user-input interface, it is inclusive of the SMS interface of the cell phone and the control buttons on the main part of home automation system. By sending SMS via cell phone to the SMS module at home, then through the main part of home automation system, which could send control command in the method of interacting with main transmission medium constructed with power line, and at the time when they get those commands from their receivers, the modules of different home appliances can only respond and work; in this way, the purpose of home automation is implemented. Based on this purpose, the most contribution of this system is the integration of consumer electronics at home so as to form home automation to provide an easy and instant access to manage the home environment. Thus, the efficiency of home appliances can be leveled up, the living burden can be eased, and attain the goal of saving manpower and energy. Moreover, the living security can be ensured.
