Abstract:
The increasing growth of mobile devices penetration has provoked the rise of the mobile payments industry. With many years in the market and with a constant evolution in both its technology and transactions volume, numerous implementations have entered the market around the world. It has demonstrated potential and innovation for services offered, business models, and delivery schemas. All these positive aspects bring new challenges for the industry and in particular for regulators. Mobile payments are emerging in the intersection of financial regulation, telecommunications regulation, and other technological rules that make the picture complicated and challenging. That is why regulators’ role should be to develop fair rules to protect both customers and the market, but having the ability to create at the same time an environment able to encourage innovation, open competition, and new services. This master thesis presents a depiction of mobile payments from its concept, functioning, technologies, and current situation. Everything conducted to introduce, explain, and analyze the existing regulations covering mobile payments and how the creation of such regulatory frameworks have helped the industry to grow and develop. Finally, several cases from different geographical regions and diverse markets are analyzed in order to see their regulatory approach and specific frameworks. Everything intended to analyze the existing trends and differences around the world with regions and countries with different socioeconomic characteristics. As a result an analysis locates each case in a logic map which allows the reader to understand how enabling is the environment for the development of the industry in terms of their regulatory situation. Additionally, the trends and differences between the regions are identified and presented based on the finds of each study case.

Abstract:
Mobile payments are an emerging trend and an alternative to traditional payment methods. Mobile payments involve the usage of the mobile phone to handle credit transfers during purchase of goods and peer to peer money transfers referred to as mobile wallet service, instead of depending on bank cards and cash. In this scenario, while the mobile wallet industry still being in its infancy there exist a few drivers of mobile wallet solutions aiming to create a de-facto standard in the mobile market. The major drivers of mobile wallets can be attributed to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), banks and web based companies.   In this report we would compare the motive behind every driver’s intent to enter the mobile payment market and the challenges associated in providing the wallet service to the market and assimilate the similarities and differences that exist among them. The key technical aspect behind the comparative analysis involves a standard set of factors on which the analysis would be based upon. The results obtained from the comparative analysis emphasizes on the significance behind the origin of industry of each mobile payment driver. The results also enlighten the varied yet partially coinciding objectives of each mobile payment driver.   The approach adopted to conduct this research is primarily through analyzing different origin industry based mobile wallet drivers, and then generalizing the data based on the researched use case models. The comparative analysis performed is based on the generalized data obtained by studying the use case under each mobile payment driver. Further, to predict the future marketing strategy of each driver, ansoff matrix is employed to devise the roadmap. Finally the main objective of the investigation is answered, which is finding out the reasons behind the entry of different industry origin drivers into the mobile payment market and the challenges faced by them.

Abstract:
Abstract Contactless mobile payments are a payment method done with a mobile phone and a contactless technology. Instead of paying with cash, a payment card or a cheque, a user can tap its mobile phone onto a terminal to pay. Across the globe, several markets have been embracing the need for new payment methods. In Asia, contactless mobile payments have been used since 2004. In some of the African countries, due to an insufficient banking industry, mobile payments have been the only electronic payment method. However, in Europe contactless mobile payments are still in their initial phase. The benefits of contactless mobile payments are that they are easier to use, faster and more secure. However, there are some implications. Firstly, the lack of standardisations regarding how the technology will work has led to an undefined ecosystem consisting of many stakeholders with different motives. Secondly, in order for contactless mobile payments to break significant ground the users need to change their existing payment methods and habits. This is a time consuming process, which will require consistency and patience. The research purpose of this thesis has been to define the contactless mobile payment ecosystem with its future potential on the European market. The research paradigm has been of an interpretive nature where the researchers’ interpretations on the information have been in focus. In order to answer the research purpose, an action research has been conducted, including an analysis the of Porter’s Five Forces model applied on the current contactless mobile payment ecosystem with its various stakeholders, the attendance at the annual NFC Congress in Austria as well as an experimental case study on Google. 3The findings of the action research have resulted in new definition of the current contactless mobile payment stakeholder ecosystem. In this new definition of the ecosystem, the user has been defined as the strongest force, hence has been placed in the centre encircled by mobile network operators, banks, merchants and transit authorities. In the ecosystem handset manufactures, operating system providers, technology vendors, cash handling organisations, card networks, POS terminal manufactures and governmental bodies have also been represented. The vision of the case study on Google has been to present a market entry strategy for how Google could enter the European market of contactless mobile payments. The research resulted in a proposition that Google would enter the market in the following order; the UK, France, Turkey, Russia, Germany, Spain and Italy. The conclusions of the research have been that contactless mobile payments will cut across an entire ecosystem, but that the ecosystem at the moment is not fully defined. To achieve a competitive position, a stakeholder has to deliver an outstanding user experience that is interoperable within the whole European market. Keywords: Contactless mobile payments, near field communication (NFC), mobile payment ecosystem, payment ecosystem, Google, Android

Abstract:
Regardless all the advantages of MPs, it has not reach the sizable customer base. In this paper, we examined the core drivers of using mobile payments (MPs) in restaurant industry from the consumers' perspective. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), we developed a six factor model to reveal the determinants of consumers' intention to use MPs in restaurant. Security, subjective norm, compatibility with lifestyle, and previous experience with MPs were added to the traditional two factor TAM model (usefulness and ease of use). 300 respondents were recruited from an online survey agency and 258 valid responses were included in the data analysis. The regression results suggested that consumers' intention to use MPs in restaurants is influences by compatibility with lifestyle, usefulness, subjective norm, security, and previous experience in MPs. Lifestyle compatibility was found as the strongest determinant of consumers' acceptance of MPs in restaurants. However, ease of use was not a significant predictor of MPs usage in restaurant. Based on the findings, the study provided several implications to the restaurant industry. Five factors (compatibility with lifestyle, usefulness, subjective norm, security, and previous experience in MPs) can serve as a guideline to encourage consumers' adoption of MPs in restaurant industry. Industry practitioners can develop advertisement catered to a trendy, innovative, tech-friendly generation who desires the flexibility that MPs give and is willing to have everything in one device. MPs should be developed to provide an added value to the user. It is also important to increase the source credibility of social information to improve communication campaigns. Finally, restaurant staff could be trained in guiding and assisting consumers in their first experience with MPs.

Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate what factors influence the adoption and use of technologies in services, more specifically in the financial services sector. The theoretical framework allowed the definition of cognitive and affective constructs for the preparation of the conceptual model. Furthermore, this model also includes constructs with high relevance for consumption of financial services, like Trust and Perceived Risk. Finally, the Technology Readiness construct, developed by Parasuraman and Colby (2014), was added to the model in order to analyze the influence of individual predisposition in relation to technology in general, as an antecedent of the other constructs. Data was collected via an online survey, which was answered by 402 students or recent graduated of graduate and post-graduate courses. The final model, named Model of Readiness and Acceptance of Mobile Payments, indicated that the Readiness Technology has stronger effects on cognitive aspects than on the affective aspects, indicating that readiness significantly assists the rational evaluation process about the use of technologies. Furthermore, the results indicated that the Perceived Usefulness and Advantage construct has the strongest effect over Attitude, followed by Trust and by Enjoyment of Perceived Quality, confirming that the cognitive aspects are predominant in decision-making regarding the use of financial services. Finally, Perceived Risk had a negative but very little effect over Intention. The Model of Readiness and Acceptance of Mobile Payments was able to explain about 76 percent of Attitude and 68 percent of Intention, showing itself a model with good predictive capability and presenting significant contribution to the literature of acceptance of technologies.

Abstract:
The rapid development of technology is quickly changing the everyday lives of people, and it is now possible to use a mobile phone to pay at the checkout in stores. However, being able to pay with a mobile phone has no intrinsic value over existing payment methods, and thus banks have to find a way to add value to their mobile payment services through inter-industry collaboration with other actors. The aim of this report is to find how banks can collaborate with other actors in order to strengthen their brand in the mobile payment business. Through a literature review and several interviews with representatives in the financial industry, merchant sector, and academia, this report answers questions related to the market in Sweden, dominant design, network externalities, business collaboration, trust, and co-branding. This report found that there is a difference in prioritization regarding features and qualities of mobile payments between different segments in the market, and banks should choose a segment to focus their efforts on. There is also a need for discussion in the market between different actors in order to promote the standardization needed to develop mobile payment services further, and banks should therefore collaborate with other actors regarding standards, even if the collaboration does not need to involve resource sharing. Co-branding with other actors could also be a way banks to enhance their brand in mobile payments and reach new market segments. Trust is a critical factor for the success of mobile payments and the handling of customer data will be one of the biggest issues to solve for the banks and their collaborators. Finally, the most important conclusion of this report is that the banks have to find a business model which is attractive enough to the merchants in order to attract them in collaboration and be able to create added value to mobile payments.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis work was to make a survey of current on-line payment technologies and find out which are they and how do they work? Compare and analyze them from a security point of view, as well as a usability point of view. What is good? What is bad? What is lacking?

To achieve this purpose, an overview of the current on-line payment technologies was acquired through academic books and papers, Internet sites, magazines. Basic cryptographic and security related techniques were studied for the security analysis of current on-line payment systems.

In this work, various current on-line payment systems were classified into two groups [Macro and Micro on-line payment systems]. This classification was based on the mode of on-line payment transactions. To analyze these on-line payment systems, a set of payment system requirements were formed [Security Issues, Usability Issues, Anonymity, Scalability etc].

Under the category of Macro payment system, Credit Card payment system, Debit Card payment system, Stored Value Card payment system, Electronic Check payment system, Electronic Cash payment system, Electronic account transfer payment system and mobile payment system transactions were examined.

Under the category of Micro payment system, Hash Chain based Payment System, Hash Collisions and Hash sequences based Payment Systems, Shared Secrete Keys based Payment Systems and Probability based payment systems were examined.

Based on the requirements of payment system, these on-line payment systems were analyzed and compared. In the analysis phase, the advantages and drawbacks of these payment systems were figured out.

It was found from the study that the credit card based payment systems are the most widely used means of conducting on-line payments. It is evident that credit card based payment systems satisfy stakeholder requirements the best, as they offer more flexible payment options, having a large user-base, benefit from familiarity and simplicity of use and also allow international payments. The other on-line payment systems lack this flexibility

It can also be extracted from the study that users want more simplified, convenient and secure on-line payment systems. Thus the futuristic on-line payment systems will have all secure payment options into one system.

Abstract:
The ubiquitous nature of mobile devices coupled with a promise of speed and convenience makes mobile payments an attractive innovation. However, mobile payments also raise concerns with regards to consumer protection. This thesis evaluates how selected jurisdictions address these concerns. The discussion is premised on the argument that mobile payments may prove counter-productive if there are no clear regulatory rules protecting the end users. This is particularly significant for jurisdictions hoping to exploit this service to address financial exclusion problems. The thesis adopts a typology of consumer policy tools which could be used to address the identified consumer concerns. This typology guides the enquiry into how the selected jurisdictions address the consumer issues in m-payments. The purpose of this enquiry is to identify what best practices Nigerian authorities can emulate from the regulatory approach in other jurisdictions. Building on the findings of the enquiry, the thesis puts forward certain recommendations which are intended to address the shortcomings observed in the Nigerian regime.

Over the last decade, there has been a proliferation of mobile payments systems (MPS). Close to 150 MPS currently exist in the world according to the Bank for International Settlement records (BIS). Mobile payments (MP) markets are at different stages of development depending on countries. However, most of them are going through their embryonic or early phases. According to the theory, at this fluid stage, where no dominant design has emerged, it is nearly impossible to predict industry evolution. This paper tests the hypothesis that (i) because the MP industry is a path dependent system rather than a hysteresis system whose state depends on their immediate history, (ii) we can actually rely on accumulated experiences (success and failures) to narrow markets options in terms of dominant players and speed of adoption. In this paper, we elaborate a classification matrix of payment services and using the Weil-Utterback system dynamic model of the diffusion of innovation we analyze the main loops at play in US, Europe and Japan. In the process we provide numerous examples of MPS and several case studies. The key take aways of our analysis are that (i) incumbents are likely to dominate the offering of mobile payments services. (ii) in the next three to five years, US rate of adoption is likely to be faster than the European one.

Abstract:
The objective of this research is to understand how consumers perceive mobile payment services and the consumers’ maturity level to adopt mobile payments in the Swedish market. To reach our objective interviews were conducted asking about consumers experience with current payment methods and how consumers perceive mobile payment services. Questions from the interviews are derived from theories about technology adoption mainly from Diffusion of Innovations and Technology Acceptance Model. In addition questions about how consumers perceive mobile payment services are based on existing and concept based features. The results show that consumers are open to, and can even consider paying to use the mobile phone as a payment instrument. At the moment mobile payment services are either based on Near Field Communication (NFC) or Quick Response (QR) code technologies at Point of Sale(POS) purchases. Consumer perceive each payment solution differently; NFC based payments were perceived as more convenient while QR code were perceived as more secure. In addition mobile payment services have the potential to incorporate additional features that can increase its attractiveness, such as storing loyalty cards digitally and the ability to transfer moneybetween accounts. The maturity level among the consumers are in an early stage because their knowledge about mobile payment services is very low at the moment, due to that the interviewees did not consider themselves as early adopters when new technologie s are introduced.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the regulation of 'mobile money'. This is an electronic payment and storage service provided by phone companies ('mobile money firms' or 'MM firms'). The first mobile money service, M-Pesa, was launched in Kenya in 2007. Since then, mobile money has spread rapidly throughout the developing world, particularly across Africa. A novel feature of mobile money is its ability to serve large numbers of people who do not have bank accounts, commonly labelled 'the unbanked'. The thesis offers a framework, based on a functional approach, to analyse the key regulatory and policy issues that arise when customers’ funds are stored and transferred within mobile money platforms. The objectives of this framework are drawn from traditional financial regulation, such as financial stability and consumer protection, and 'financial inclusion', which involves connecting the unbanked to formal, electronic payment and storage functions. The thesis makes three main claims. First, mobile money operates as a shadow retail deposit system. Mobile money is 'shadow' because a customer contracts with a non-banking firm. It is 'retail' because the system meets the payment needs of individuals for ordinary transactions. And the service is a 'deposit' system because a mobile money account provides payment and storage functions which are functionally equivalent to a bank deposit. Second, mobile money provides these payment and storage functions, functionally equivalent to a bank deposit, through a different legal structure to that used by a bank to provide deposit account services. This structure, which is established through private ordering, comprises a set of mechanisms by which the MM firm (the 'agent' in the service) and its associates credibly commit to safeguard the funds of the mobile money customers (the 'principals') for the purposes of providing payment and storage functions. Collectively, these commitments require the MM firm to maintain a 1:1 relationship between cash received from customers, which is stored within the system as highly liquid assets, and 'e-money' which customers use in the mobile money service. As a result, mobile money customers face primarily operational risks, usually without the credit and liquidity risks associated with banking. Third, public ordering can increase the efficiency of MM firms' commitments in addressing risks in mobile money platforms through adopting an 'active' approach to regulation. In this approach, the policymaker monitors a greater range of risks and more closely than what might be expected in other comparable principal-agent relationships, such as retail investors and financial intermediaries, and depositors and banks. This approach is appropriate because unbanked customers are likely to face significant information asymmetries with MM firms and coordination problems amongst themselves. This means they are unlikely to effectively monitor a range of risks to the service caused by the MM firm and its associates.

Abstract:
When we buy things in a store it is given that you also pay for the products you buy. There are a handful of payment services available on the market. More and more people choose to abandon cash as a payment method in Sweden. The usage of cash is in a negative trend and the number of card users increase, according to statistics. This in turns means that credit-/debit card providers will have a monopoly-like position over the payment market and can therefore set transactions fees that suit their needs. Only 1 % of all transactions consist of mobile payments. Despite these low numbers the successful mobile payment service Swish has over 5 million users in Sweden. Although mobile payments match all the criteria to be regarded as a payment service in stores, the lack of trust among consumers makes them not confident enough to use it as their primary payment method. This in turn creates problems for mobile payments to establish themselves on the market. With these problems in mind this study focuses on identifying and prioritizing factors that affect consumers trust for mobile payments. To answer this study’s research question a quantitative self-completion questionnaire was conducted with a selection of respondents. 130 respondents answered the self-completion questionnaire and the responses were used in a statistical analysis program to identify and create useful statistical data. A discussion that is grounded in theory and empirical data shows that the respondents mostly assesses safety based on their subjective perception, the subjective perception is often based on the perception of the application interface. Another interesting finding is that a majority of the respondent stated that benefits of mobile payment over traditional payment solutions are equally important. Respondents also point out that the benefits with mobile payments are an important contributing factor towards the trust they experience. Finally, a discussion about personal integrity and how it affects the choice of mobile payments is held. The result of the study shows that consumers value security the most. However, consumers perceive safety as inadequate, but they choose to ignore it. The benefits that mobile payments offer are also a very important factor for consumers in choosing mobile payments. To increase trust in mobile payment solutions, security and benefits should be the focus of the payment service provider. Even if the results only show a small number of respondents prioritizing personal integrity it should still be considered an important factor. Mobile payment providers should therefore also focus on personal integrity in order to attract customers who prioritize integrity.

Abstract:
The mobile payments industry, which is currently at an early stage of development, is taking the direction to be established mainly as an NFC-based industry, and, moreover, led by the mobile digital wallets setting. A mobile digital wallet is a complete payment app for your NFC-enabled mobile phone that enables consumers to pay at stores at the point of sale with a mobile phone. The digital wallet, which is associated with a credit card, integrates all payment-related services like the management and storage of receipts, coupons and offers, and loyalty cards. Currently, there are three big partnerships going ahead of the NFC mPayments stream: Google Wallet, VISA’s Digital Wallet and ISIS Mobile Wallet. Each one of these three mobile digital wallets is led by an actor coming from a different industry of origin. Google Wallet is led by Google, an internet and technology actor. VISA’s Digital Wallet is managed by Visa, a traditional payment processor. And ISIS Mobile Wallet is led by three of the largest US telecom operators: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Thus, applying a business network theory to analyse how the industry of origin of the mobile digital wallet affects the interaction within the partnership formed is a unique and perfectly fitted opportunity. The aim of this Master Thesis was to analyse the influence, regarding interaction, of the origin industry of the leading partners on the NFC-based mobile digital wallet partnerships of the mobile payments developing industry. A literature review on business network theory was conducted, in order to identify key features of the business landscape affecting interaction on business networks, as well as an industry analysis of the mobile payments developing industry. Then, the business network theory approach was applied to the study of the mobile payments digital wallet setting, conducting a discussion based both on the industry analysis performed and a set of interviews with experts on the mobile payments industry.

Abstract:
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short distance radio frequency communication technology that is suitable for use in a mobile handset. The technology enables payment cards, transport tickets and access cards to be replaced by software in the handset, thereby creating a mobile wallet with virtual cards. This thesis is focused on the mobile phone payment environment including NFC technology, industry collaboration and security. The research is based on literature studies, interviews and the development of a prototype system. The prototype was developed to demonstrate payments and loyalty membership transactions using an NFC-equipped mobile phone. The technology of NFC is ready for commercial use since the most critical standards have been published. What remains to be done before widespread technology implementation is to establish the payment infrastructure. This consists of compatible systems and a solid business model supported by industry collaboration agreements. When wireless communication and embedded systems including software applications are introduced to the payment environment, new threats to payment security arise. Due to this, there is a need for continuous research to maintain the security and suppress new attack methods but the current protection against attacks in these areas is strong. A suggestion for future work is to further study the threats from software attacks as well as usability aspects regarding mobile phone payment systems. Another suggestion is to further develop the prototype for integration into an existing payment system.

Abstract:
Mobile Payments’ is a new technological mantra not only for researchers, innovators, company executives, but also for every household across the globe. True to the statement, Mobile payments are in the verge of taking a giant leap towards a cashless society. Accordingly, mobile payment services are still followed in both developed and developing countries. In the developing economies, mobile based payment services has reached a pinnacle of success in a short span of time due to the favouring conditions such as very few banked people with more mobile phone penetration etc. But in the developed markets such as Europe, USA etc., with more advanced technology and payment solutions find it difficult to reach a steady growth. In this thesis, the main objective is to find out the factors that are hindering the uptake of mobile payments in European market. This is done by comparing the Non-European market with the European one and analysing the factors for success in the developing market and this success factors are considered for the European market which can be the lessons learnt for a better uptake of mobile payments. For this, four countries are selected in each of the markets. This analysis is made by diving into two phases. In the first phase, different cases of mobile payment present in both the markets are taken and analysed. In the second phase, factors considered for influencing the success of mobile payments such as Socio-economic conditions, Technology and Hardware used, Actors involvement, Pricing, Regulatory issues and Consumer acceptance are collected, analysed for both the markets. The analysis is done for two phases and for each phase a separate framework is used. Once the analyses are done, a summary of the results are produced. Based upon the summary of both the phases, the overlying factors causing success in Non-European market are identified and explained. Then they are compared with the European market to identify where certain suitable lessons can be learnt from the developing market. The identified factors are considered as the lessons to be learnt for a big break in mobile payment industry. In the future work section, Contactless mobile payments (CMP) is explained and their future scope in mobile payment ecosystem is discussed.

Abstract:
This research investigates consumer acceptance of mobile payments. Mobile payments offer an alternative payment method for consumers, and allow consumers to make point-of-sales payments through mobile devices, such as mobile phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). It aims to present a better understanding of mobile payments, developing a consumer acceptance model for mobile payments. Moreover, it offers a reference and a source of literature for the industry and academic researchers in this new information systems research domain. This thesis focuses on consumer acceptance of mobile payments, and explores and investigates the factors that influence consumer acceptance of mobile payments. The lack of literature and empirical research in the field of mobile payments encouraged the development of a research framework to elucidate the acceptance of mobile payments by consumers. The present research has been conducted in order to offer a more in-depth understanding of consumers’ perspectives on mobile payments. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT) have been introduced into this research, offering a solid foundation for this research and the development of a research model. A mixed methods approach was adopted for the research in this thesis. The research started with a qualitative method, using a focus group to investigate potential mobile payment users concerning usage, issues and adoption via open-ended questions. This process was followed by an example of mobile payment being identified and explored to understand mobile payments: a closed-ended questionnaire was used in this part of the research study. Study two is a case study, the selected case being ZOOP mobile payments. At the time of this research, ZOOP was a successful commercial infraredbased mobile payments system. These two studies offer rich information regarding the attitude and behaviour of mobile payments users toward mobile payments, and the expectations and concerns of potential users. The data and results from study one and study two were important as background material and for reference, and they also offer a context for the interpretation of the data from study three. Therefore, through these processes, a solid foundation for this research has been established. The proposed research model has been used in study three to address the research question in conjunction with evaluating the research model. The relationships between the potential factors in the research model have also been identified. The conceptual framework presented in this research is based on two well-known theories, IDT and TAM. Study three obtained two sets of data. The first survey was for all mobile payments users around the globe, and the second survey focused on one particular mobile payments service in the UK. The second set of data is designed to confirm the result from the first set of data. This rigorous process provides a solid model of consumer acceptance of mobile payments. The data has been analysed through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) via Linear Structural RELationships (LISREL) computer application software. The study has successfully evaluated the research model and obtained results. Moreover, the survey instruments used have also been validated in this study. This empirical research is used to improve the understanding of the phenomenon of mobile payments. Moreover, it offers insight into the attitudes and behaviour of consumers towards using mobile payments. In study one, focus group studies identified the reasons for adopting mobile payment systems, for example, a convenient service. Concerns about using the services, for instance, security, have also been identified. Furthermore, the second study surveyed ZOOP mobile payment users in South Korea: it also identified that convenience, ease of use, and a safe service would attract consumers to use the service. Both studies have provided valuable information for academics and the industry to understand why consumers would like to use mobile payments and also their concerns. The results of the study have confirmed the importance of the identified factors for consumer acceptance of mobile payments. Apart from TAM and IDT, respondents note that perceived costs, perceived trust, perceived system quality, and social influence are important to them. The results of this research study should be of interest to both academic and business communities. The research in this thesis expands the usage of the TAM model in Information Systems (IS) research, validates and extends the TAM model within the mobile payments domain, and develops a new model of mobile payment adoption. Moreover, the results are of value to the business communities interested in developing and implementing mobile payment systems. Potential service providers would benefit from an improved understanding of these aspects. The identification of important factors concerning mobile payments in this study will assist them to develop and implement their systems to ensure the full acceptance and continuous use of the systems. The research framework can also be used for future research related to mobile payments or mobile commerce.

Abstract:
A progressive shift from cash and card –based in-store payments, towards contactless mobile payments, is currently in the making on the European market. This shift would imply payments in stores to be performed in a fast, simple, secure and preferably less costly manner, between a consumer´s mobile phone and a merchant´s payment terminal. Technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC) and the use of Quick Response (QR) -codes, both facilitate such contactless payments, and have already built momentum in many European countries. This implies an undoubtedly very tempting new payment experience by the use of mobile phones. However, this shift entails several uncertainties and issues regarding the crystallization of the new “industry” that is forming. These issues regard social, organizational as well as market –related aspects, and adhere to stakeholders on both the provider- and user- side of contactless mobile payment products and services. It has been found that there is a great need for new research on this matter, from a more holistic perspective, where theories on industrial dynamics, developments and user adoption could be used to guide and explain these new industry-impeding issues as well as reveal new ones. This master thesis aims to answer this call – by using such theories in conjunction with a multi-stakeholder perspective from a wide base of empirically gathered data – in order to find, interpret and shed new light on key issues that impede the development and adoption of contactless mobile payments on the European market. It was deemed necessary to first conduct a thorough literature review on the current mobile payments landscape in Europe, in order to find out which key issues seem to be existent on the European market (adhering to both providers and users of mobile payment solution), with the intention to presuppose from those issues for further guidance of choices in theories and construction of empirical data gathering methodology. The theoretical framework was in such way built upon five different but highly interconnected theoretical concepts on new industry evolvement, strategy and adoption. The empirical data was gathered from a two-day conference on mobile payments in Europe, as well as from 10 in-depth interviews with different key stakeholders on the Swedish and European market. The theoretical framework and the empirical data was later merged for analysis purpose, in order to find, interpret and shed new light on these and other issues on contactless mobile payment development and adoption on the European market. This has led to some key findings or conclusions. Firstly, the literature review on the current mobile payments market in Europe revealed some key issues. On the provider-side of the stakeholder spectra; issues mainly revolve around collaboration and competition, where business models are hard to standardize due to the unevenly distributed control and power over the users. This was seen to relate heavily to the NFC Secure Element (SE) -placement, holding the consumers´ payment credentials, since different stakeholders prefer different SE -placements (on the SIM –card or integrated in the mobile phone). Some big actors have also created their own – more of end-to-end - contactless payment solutions, complicating the evolvement even further. This might further lead to issues related primarily to; early and late movers among providers, alternative mobile payment solutions, as well as issues related to interoperability between solutions/technologies as well as across borders. Security concerns have also been highlighted in the literature as a prioritized matter. Among the user-side of the stakeholder spectra; key issues relate to the adoption of in-store contactless mobile payments, such as investment costs for merchants to implement new hardware and/or software (terminals, mainly NFC -compatible), security concerns, reluctance in behavioral change among consumers´ payment habits, and uncertainties in the perceived added value through these new types of payments compared to foremost card payments. Secondly, after merging the theoretical framework with the empirical data for analysis purpose, it was revealed that the uncertain role of mobile network operators creates tensions in the ecosystem on various levels and to various extents. Secondly, preemption strategies utilized by indigenous firms in European countries shows the possibility of hampering payment interoperability, and first-movers risk hurting not only themselves, but the entire mobile payment ecosystem, if security breaches are discovered due to technological uncertainties. This is one strong reason for banks to move slower, but they mightcontradictively risk losing some of their high trustworthiness towards other stakeholders if being too passive. Moreover, two additional trade-off issues were discovered (technology/business model standardization versus innovation, and too many features in the provided offering versus too few features in the provided offering). The first of these trade-offs is further damaging for the ecosystem since there are strong differences in opinions on the matter, as well as what might increase adoption speed. The second trade-off is important to take into consideration where payment card penetration-rate is high. An additional factor carrying issues was the explicit focus of providers on only one side (consumers) in a two-sided market (consumers and merchants). Also, merchants can not be seen as a homogenous group. Finally, the “chicken and egg” –problem seem do not seem to be such a big of a problem after all.

Abstract:
Technology development always makes the life easier and faster thus it also impacts the way we do business in our lives. As the widespread usage of mobile devices in recent years mobile technology has created an environment in which people around the world are getting closer. Recently the popularity of personal mobile devices like Ipad and Iphone leads to the appearance of opportunities to improve payments more fast and efficient. And for the past years various services and applications for mobile payment have been developed by the companies which are eager for the leader positions in the new market. With the development of mobile payment and the important relationship between payment and our lives, a lot of security risks associated with this field should be extensively studied. This thesis aims to analyze the security risks related to the mobile payment. This thesis uses an explorative method to research the stakeholders, critical assets and vulnerabilities within mobile payment by utilizing case studies of Square and Google Wallet. The information gathered from the case studies and security analysis is further analyzed by the dynamic network analysis tool (ORA) in order to discover the security risks. The results of this thesis indicate that accounts and business data are the most critical assets in mobile payment because accounts are the foundation to perform payment transactions. Further, the mobile payment service provider, merchant and consumer are the stakeholders affected most by the security risks. And this thesis concludes that all the stakeholders should be aware of the security risks within the mobile payment environment, and further if service and device providers want to keep continuous business they should make more effort to cooperate with each other to protect the users against these risks.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to examine the challenges of digital payments, the risks they pose and the impact they have in society. Technology is constantly changing, companies need to keep in pace with technology in order to provide accurate and actual financial information. Therefore it is important to examine the digital transactions impact on accounting. The issue that has been chosen to be studied is to identify the challenges that banks and companies that provide digital payment solutions face and how they work with these challenges. The method that was chosen to achieve the study was the qualitative method and the empirical material were obtained by semistructured interviews. Six respondents participated in the study, four banks and two companies that provides digital payment solutions. The results are analysed with the help of previous research and chosen theoretical concepts of mobile payment, card payment, risks and safety, cost-effectiveness and acceptance of payment services. The result of the theoretical and empirical study implies that higher requirements are placed on banks and companies, they have to follow laws and directives in order to increase the security of digital payments. The study is in swedish.

Abstract:
For the last decades there has been a steady shift from cash to card payments and with increased smart phone penetration, payments have started to move into our mobile devices. This thesis studies how mobile payments can change the traditional payment landscape. The purpose is to assess the disruptiveness of the Swedish mobile payment market and describe key stakeholder strategies for managing a potentially disruptive change. The study has been designed as a combination of a theoretical and an empirical study where the theoretical part consisted of a literature review that hinted on a gap in terms of available literature on the disruptiveness of different mobile payment business models. Main theoretical concepts used are; disruptive innovation, business model innovation, and theories on competing solutions and dominant design. The subsequent empirical study consisted of a number of qualitative, indepth interviews with key stakeholder from the Swedish mobile payment industry: five mobile payment providers, one major merchant, and the Swedish Trade Federation. This thesis shows that two fundamentally different types of mobile C2B payments are emerging; mobile payment solutions based on existing card payment schemes and mobile payment solutions that build on new and independent payment schemes. The independent model has been defined as the most powerful disruptive force in relation to the existing market for card payments, mainly because it offers opportunities for innovative players to build simple new payment schemes that bypass traditional card payment players and therefore can be made far more cost efficient. However, many established card payment players are inhibiting this development since they are afraid it could seriously harm their existing card business.

Abstract:
Magister Legum - LLM (Criminal Justice and Procedure)
Money laundering is defined as the process of converting the proceeds derived from a wide range of underlying criminal offences, called predicate offences, to apparently legitimate property. In other words, it is the process of washing away the stain of illegality from the proceeds of crime in order to give them the appearance of legality. In fact, the nomenclature of the practice itself was inspired by Americas notorious gangster Al Capones practice of channelling the proceeds of his criminal enterprise through his laundromats in order to cloak their illegality so as to endow them with an appearance of legality. The crime of money laundering has been a scourge on the economies of the world, hence it has become a crime of international concern. The international community has developed numerous international treaty norms obligating states to criminalise money laundering. These norms, when incorporated into national legislation, are expected to serve as the legal basis not only for national prosecution of money laundering offences but also for international mutual legal assistance in AML (for example, international co-operation in the confiscation of criminal proceeds and extradition of money launderers).

Abstract:
The Swedish people are making more and more mobile payments, (Riksbanken, 2020), but despite the change in behaviour as a private individual, the situation for Swedishcompanies seems to be different. The Ministry of Trade and Industry (2021) states thatSwedish companies remain in analogue payment processes, a thesis The World PaymentReport (2020) agrees with, while they state that digitized business models around B2Bpayments are predicted to have great development potential. What does it look like in research on mobile payments? In the compilation of Dahlberg etal (2015; 2008), it is feared that the research perspective has been too focused on privateindividuals, which has created a gap between practice and academia. This study aims to shed light on the situation of Swedish micro-entrepreneurs by lookingat how Swedish micro-entrepreneurs use services linked to mobile payments, what theirexpectations are and how the services meet the needs of micro-companies.This was done on the basis of a theoretical framework by Apanasevic et al (2016), whichis well suited as it partly contributes to a new perspective on issues concerning mobilepayments and attaches great importance to the respondents' expectations. Using aninterpretive research method, the study was conducted as a qualitative study in whichseven qualitative, semi-structured interviews were analysed thematically. The study concluded that Swedish micro-entrepreneurs' adoption of mobile paymentservices differs. From managing the entire company's finances through an app to mainlyusing mobile means of payment in situation-adapted events, or not using mobile means ofpayment at all. The study also shows that the expectation when an entrepreneur switchesto a mobile means of payment is to digitize a manual process. If this is done wholeheartedly, the entrepreneurs are satisfied with the mobile service and expectations are met.Integrated systems, especially with accounting, are very positive. As in previous research,a fast, smooth and clear service is perceived positively, and its opposites as negative.Entrepreneur’s reason about internal business opportunities, that the service saves themtime, as time is money. This differs from studies that look at retailers and privatecustomers, where previous studies like Mallat (2007), and Apanasevic et al (2016) ratherfocus on a mobile payment service creating external business opportunities that can attractnew customers or more sales. For future research, case studies on the mobile services mentioned in this study areproposed, in accordance with continuing to broaden the perspective in mobile payments.

Abstract:
Traditional authentication methods like Personal Identification Number (PIN) are getting obsolete and insecure for electronic-payments while mobile-payments are becoming more and more popular. Biometrics such as fingerprint and face recognition authentication methods seem to be a solution to this security issue as they are becoming a regular and integrated part of an average smartphone end-users purchase. However, for mobile-payments to be authenticated by biometrics, end-users acceptability of both technologies must be high. In this research, fingerprint and face recognition authentication methods are being tested with end-users and their current acceptability level is being determined based on interviews which are conducted upon finishing each testing scenario. The interview is using 39 questions which are determining previous usage of the technologies, their likeability, positives, negatives, and feelings about various features biometrics provide such as ease-of-use, stress-free method of payment, security, and many others. Additionally, one more authentication method is tested, namely two factor authentication consisting of one biometric method (fingerprint) and one traditional method (PIN) of authentication. The main goal for testing this method is to find out whether implementing (as currently it is not available) such technology into mobile-payments would be beneficial and how it scored in user-acceptance next to fingerprint and face recognition authentication methods. Once the user-acceptance level is determined the main reasons for it are presented. Last but not least, suggestions for improvements in this domain are presented so that biometrics are even more accepted by end-users who are performing mobile-payments on their smartphones.

Abstract:
Abstract Payment industry is witnessing a fast transition from cash dominant era, to card payments and recently mobile payments. Sweden as one of the pioneer countries moving towards cashless society, has experienced quite fast transition thanks to it’s widespread internet access coverage and robust card payment infrastructure. During last few years there has been many mobile payment solutions launched to this market. As a result, some challenges and dynamics have emerged within the Swedish payment ecosystem. Different actors employed different strategies to secure and maintain their position within the ecosystem. This study aims to investigate the current status of power control within the ecosystem by using an extracted part of ARA framework to clarify how different established actors are reacting to this transition. What is more, conducted literature review for this study revealed that, there are few studies for the future of the payment industry and how the ecosystem should be responded to the current trend of moving toward mobile payments. As a result, by use of Configuration value for networks, this study managed to fine a gap which is, absence of a “Value Network” role within the ecosystem. The study suggests that concepts of value chain and value shops are no longer answering the demands of the market and thus, recommend the incumbents of the industry to create and fulfill the Value Network role, so that it could be used as a defense strategy against potential future industry disruption.

Abstract:
Fueled by ubiquitous access to mobile phones, and a massive population of nearly 3 billion unbanked people around the globe, mobile commerce is evolving as a disruptive technology. Simultaneously, mobile payments are surfacing as a killer application within the mobile commerce context (Hu et al. 2008). Undeniably, the proliferation of wireless mobile technology provides much-needed access to vital information, and financial services for disenfranchised, unbanked populations. In addition, technological innovations offer first-time opportunities for suppliers of goods and services in a market context to gain competitive advantages while enhancing their economic viability. According to Portio Research, the volume of mobile payments rose significantly from $68.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, with predictions of $633.4 billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2014 (mobithinking.com 2012). Despite exponential growth in the number of mobile subscribers globally, and widespread adoption of mobile commerce, acceptance rates for mobile payment applications have lagged (Dahlberg et al. 2007, Ondrus et al 2009, Ondrus and Lyytinen 2011). Yet examinations of factors inhibiting the widespread acceptance of mobile payments are relatively sparse. Using Social Network theory, this research examines factors affecting engagement in mobile payments. The researcher posits that four primary elements influence mobile payment engagement: 1) the relationships between and amongst inter-organizational alliance members; 2) the prevailing regulatory environment; 3) the state of existing banking and technology infrastructures, and 4) an assessment of economic opportunity. The research outcomes from this exploratory examination led to the development of a comprehensive model for mobile payment engagement, and strongly suggest that ties between and amongst firms in inter-organizational alliances help ensure the success of mobile payment engagement. Support was found for the following suppositions: 1) similarities and relations (continuous ties) help establish a framework and understanding amongst alliance members as to each party’s goals and objectives; and 2) interactions and flows (discrete ties) between and amongst inter-organizational alliance members strengthen the overall ties between alliance members while solidifying a viable working relationship amongst the alliance members. This study employs a qualitative approach to obtain real world insight into the dynamism of the mobile payment arena. A model is then proposed to practically examine mobile payment engagement opportunities. From a theoretical perspective, the research contributes to the extant scholarly knowledgebase pertaining to engagement in mobile payments.

Hampshire, Chris. "Exploring UK consumer perceptions of mobile payments using smart phones and contactless consumer devices through an extended Technology Adoption Model." Thesis, University of Chester, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/620339.

Full text
Abstract:
Widespread adoption of mobile payments has not taken place despite a decade of trials in various countries based upon a mobile phone handset that does not have the technology capabilities of today’s smart phones. However, significant technology developments have led to widespread consumer adoption of smart phones and other devices that may now provide the foundation for wider consumer adoption of mobile payments. Understanding UK consumer cultural perceptions on the new phenomenon is one of the first steps to influencing purchase behaviour. This thesis is based upon a post-positivist philosophy and a social constructionist ontology that explores UK consumer perceptions of mobile payments through human cognitive and affective responses of consumer payment behaviour as these influence attitude that leads to adoption. However, UK consumer interest in mobile payments on its own is unlikely to be enough to change payment behaviour, although meeting specific payment needs can motivate consumers to amend their payment behaviour that can lead to widespread adoption. Inductive empirical research is used to explore UK consumer perceptions of mobile payments through sequential mixed methods. A questionnaire is used as the 1st research instrument with closed questions that explore various aspects of consumer interest in the mobile payments phenomenon. The key themes identified from the numerical analysis of the questionnaire data are used to guide the semi-structured interviews. Content analysis is then undertaken on the qualitative interview data from which new knowledge on consumer perceptions of mobile payments is identified. Analysis of the empirical data suggests that UK consumers have significant technology and security concerns which negatively affect consumer interest. Despite these concerns, UK consumers demonstrate interest in the mobile payments phenomenon when perceived usefulness benefits are identified. The perceived usefulness positively influences attitude that overcomes perceived risks which can lead to amended consumer payment behaviour and widespread adoption. In addition, UK consumers have a significant lack of trust towards unknown organisations as well as new market entrants although there is an increased level of trust in mobile payments provided by UK banks as well as other established organisations. This research fills an important gap in existing literature on consumer payment behaviour as it explores UK consumer cultural perceptions of the mobile payments phenomenon using smart phones and contactless consumer devices; whereas earlier consumer payment research is based upon a mobile phone handset that does not have the technology capabilities of today’s smart phones and has an Asian and Nordic cultural focus. Furthermore, this research provides UK empirical evidence that refines and extends existing research through the use of sequential mixed methods whilst adding to the understanding of UK consumer attitudes related to UK payment instruments.

Abstract:
Both communication, and the methods and tools of commerce have evolved over time through the invention of new technologies. The latest of these technologies are mobile devices and electronic commerce respectively. The combination of these two technologies has resulted in the creation of electronic commerce which also enables mobile payments. Mobile payments (mpayments) are enabled by many technologies with Near Field Communication (NFC) being the most recent one. NFC is a wireless technology that enables mobile devices in close proximity to exchange data. The mobile device has already been enthusiastically accepted by the customers and they carry it with them wherever they go and this makes it a good device for providing a payment method alternative. This research looks at contactless mobile payment as a payment method. Customers in marginalized rural areas lack a payment alternative to cash hence in this research we are investigating and proposing the use of a NFC enabled mobile payment application for Marginalized Rural Areas. This research extensively evaluates and assesses the potential of using NFC enabled m-payments in Marginalized Rural Areas in South Africa by carrying out an investigation of the technology and its acceptance by customers. The investigation of the technology included implementation of a prototype application which was used to introduce the technology to the consumers. The customer acceptance of the NFC enabled mobile payments was evaluated using the Technology Acceptance model (TAM). The model was modified to suit the context of this study by adding more constructs. This research concluded that Near Field Communication enabled m-payments have great potential to be used and accepted by people in the marginalized rural areas.

Abstract:
Many new mobile payments services have launched especially within Europe since 2012. Mass adaption of those new ways of payment is still far away though. Former research papers focused already on business models in forms of value networks to increase success and popularity of such services. However, the highly fragmented markets concerning consumer behaviour and the technological conditions were very often neglected. Therefore the thesis is directed to mobile payment services to improve their current service offering as well as potential partners in a possible value network. To highlight the importance of human behaviour in regards to consumer needs, a six months research period has been undertaken during and before the launch of a mobile payment service. The key outcomes of that research have been aligned with available literature on this field, to draw conclusions on how to shape and further extend a mobile payment service. As a final result, mobile payment services have to follow two strategies. First they have to maintain their flexibility by adjusting their service to different consumer needs and offering value added services. Second, by forming alliances in forms of value networks, as partnerships with long-established companies like banks, they will contribute to further popularity and further growth of mobile payment services. Due to the complexity of the subject, a list of further research can be found at the end for more investigations related to the latest topics influencing mobile payments.

Pourghomi, Pardis. "Managing near field communication (NFC) payment applications through cloud computing." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/8538.

Full text
Abstract:
The Near Field Communication (NFC) technology is a short-range radio communication channel which enables users to exchange data between devices. NFC provides a contactless technology for data transmission between smart phones, Personal Computers (PCs), Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and such devices. It enables the mobile phone to act as identification and a credit card for customers. However, the NFC chip can act as a reader as well as a card, and also be used to design symmetric protocols. Having several parties involved in NFC ecosystem and not having a common standard affects the security of this technology where all the parties are claiming to have access to client’s information (e.g. bank account details). The dynamic relationships of the parties in an NFC transaction process make them partners in a way that sometimes they share their access permissions on the applications that are running in the service environment. These parties can only access their part of involvement as they are not fully aware of each other’s rights and access permissions. The lack of knowledge between involved parties makes the management and ownership of the NFC ecosystem very puzzling. To solve this issue, a security module that is called Secure Element (SE) is designed to be the base of the security for NFC. However, there are still some security issues with SE personalization, management, ownership and architecture that can be exploitable by attackers and delay the adaption of NFC payment technology. Reorganizing and describing what is required for the success of this technology have motivated us to extend the current NFC ecosystem models to accelerate the development of this business area. One of the technologies that can be used to ensure secure NFC transactions is cloud computing which offers wide range advantages compared to the use of SE as a single entity in an NFC enabled mobile phone. We believe cloud computing can solve many issues in regards to NFC application management. Therefore, in the first contribution of part of this thesis we propose a new payment model called “NFC Cloud Wallet". This model demonstrates a reliable structure of an NFC ecosystem which satisfies the requirements of an NFC payment during the development process in a systematic, manageable, and effective way.

This study objects to identify aspects that can promote or limit the emergence of mobile payment arrangements (m-payments) that can be used in microcredit initiatives in Brazil. The microcredit theme was chosen not only for the huge potential to perform microcredit operations in Brazil but also for the aspect of economic and social integration that microcredit operations can provide. The choice of mobile payment theme was based on the versatility and innovation of this payment method, with potential for a major transformation of payment methods in the Brazilian market. The analysis of the use of mobile payment initiatives in microfinance arose due to the contributions this mode of payment can bring to perform microfinance operations. The objective of this qualitative study is to assist in understanding the supportive and limiting aspects for the use of mobile payment initiatives in microcredit, as well as to verify what contributions the use of mobile payment can bring to perform microfinance operations. Additionally, using the information obtained from the Relevant Social Groups (RSG) involved in these payment arrangements, this work also aims to identify the influences of these agents to form and to adapt these arrangements. Information to conduct this study was collected primarily through in-depth interviews with selected participants of RSG from these payment arrangements representatives. The interviews were transcribed at the end of this work and represent an important source of information to those interested in the subject, considering the richness of detail presented. For the understanding and interpretation of the object of study, the theoretical framework presented by Coase and Williamson (Transaction Costs), Gannamaneni e Ondrus (Multilevel Framework) was used. With the publication of Resolution 4.282 of Brazilian Central Bank in November 2013, establishing the regulatory framework that governs the authorization and operation of arrangements and payment institutions in Brazil, the subject of this study becomes even more relevant for the academic community participants in the microfinance market and RSG members of the mobile payment arrangements. We hope with this study contribute to a better understanding of the barriers and facilitators for adoption and development of mobile payment arrangements, but mostly that this study may contribute to a greater interaction of these arrangements with microcredit initiatives.

Abstract:
Aim: Banks’ settlement of handling cash and the technological developments of our payment services, leaves us guessing at the outlooks of consumers’ payment systems. One of the new payment options arising from this development is mobile payment. With access to internet, mobile payment can take over the role as the primary method of payment, as it can be used on any occasion. Questions are raised about which factors that are affecting the future users’ attitude to use mobile payment, and if the service can be a threat to the traditional card payments. Method: This study is based on a quantitative method by the means of a survey design. Questionnaires are used in order to collect a considerable amount of data. A deductive approach is used to formulate hypotheses from existing theory, which is tested with various statistic methods. Result & Conclusions: The study results display a significant relationship between the users’ attitude to start using mobile payment and compatibility and usefulness. The variable that showed no significant relationship was ease of use. The results also showed that the method of card payment is accepted and is therefore main competitor for mobile payment. Suggestions for future research: To investigate which factors future users value between the variables compatibility and usefulness is a possible suggestion for future research. When these two were found to have a relationship with attitude, it can affect the future users’ acceptance to mobile payment. It would also be interesting to examine a merchant’s perspective to identify who intends to offer such services. This is an important aspect, as the study results showed that the respondents had lower response rates regarding whether mobile payment could be associated with the availability for use in the market. Contribution of the thesis: The study highlights future users’ acceptance of mobile payment and which factors that can be driving for increased spread. The result can provide ideas on what incentives are neccessary to be focused on, to get more of the younger generation to develop a positive attitude towards this service and then apply it. The study results also provide an insight for card companies, as they seek knowledge whether the mobile payment is a threat in the current situation.

Abstract:
The convergence of mobile and social media, enabled by the ever-changing landscape of information and communication technologies and wireless technologies, has over the last decade, transformed our world into a Socio-Mobile Economy. Looking at the disruptive impact of this convergence on the global payment market, this study investigates the incentives behind different reactions and cooperation models that have been adopted by providers in the Swedish mobile payment market. The methodology of the study has been built on a combination of both theoretical and empirical bases. The theoretical base constitutes a literature review along the line of concepts such as innovation management, disruptive innovation, business model innovation, resource-based theory of the firm and the transaction cost theories, to identify existing gaps within the literature. The empirical base constitutes of qualitative in-depth interviews with three providers in the Swedish mobile payment market. The study shows three main reactions from the Swedish mobile payment providers. These providers have reacted to disrupt the disruption, attract a critical mass of customers, and to wrap their solutions with the right context. Currently, there is no cooperation between all three key input providers of a mobile payment solution, the banks, the MNOs and the card payment systems thus there are no full-integration or partial-integration models in the Swedish mobile payment market. Three cooperation models, the all-bank-centric, the MNO-centric and the light models were also identified in this market.

Abstract:
Background: This study explores the significance of ICT on the capabilities of unbanked MSE entrepreneurs in Lesotho. MSE entrepreneurs are the primary source of income for their families, especially in the context of developing countries. Accordingly, MSEs are fundamental instruments for economic growth, poverty alleviation and source of employment in developing countries. Hence, the country that invests in this business sector is a step closer to accomplishing its MDGs. Purpose: The study explored and empirically assessed the influence of mobile payments among MSE entrepreneurs through a capabilities lens. Given that MSEs are crucial for developing countries, the targeted participants were MSE entrepreneurs from diverse trading industries in Lesotho. Research methodology: The methodology for this study was qualitative. Exploratory and descriptive research methods were used to evaluate the influence of mobile payments on the capabilities of MSE entrepreneurs. This study adopted Kleine's Choice Framework to explore and empirically assess the benefits of mobile payments among MSE entrepreneurs. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and field notes and analysed using thematic analysis. Key Findings: The findings revealed the use of M-Pesa within the MSE sector enabled microentrepreneurs to accomplish their goals. The findings show that M-Pesa leads to the growth of MSEs. Therefore, entrepreneurs in the MSE business sector are capable of providing food, shelter and clothes for their families through income generated from their enterprises. Additionally, MSE entrepreneurs bank, transfer and receive money through accessible and available mobile payment platforms. However, these entrepreneurs face issues such as network failure, withdrawal amount limits and security risks while using mobile payments. Value of the study: The study contributes to the existing ICT4D and mobile payments literature in Lesotho by discussing the influence of mobile payment through the Choice Framework.

Often effectively excluded by formal financial systems, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries have found in Mobile Money services an efficient and cost effective means of availing themselves of financial services without holding bank accounts. In order to provide meaningful recommendations to the stakeholders of the banking sector of Cameroon, small and medium-sized enterprises, Mobile Money service providers, and relevant state organs, this study was conducted to investigate the influence of Mobile Money services on the financial performance of SMEs in two markets in Douala in Cameroon. A mixed methods research design was employed to conduct the study. The quantitative data was collected through the administration of a survey questionnaire and the qualitative data from one-on-one in-depth interviews. By means of snowball sampling, a sample of 285 SMEs was obtained to respond to the survey questionnaire, while the researcher used purposive sampling to select the owners or managing directors of twelve of the respondents to participate in the interviews. Version 25 of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software was used to analyse the quantitative data, while the qualitative data was subjected to thematic analysis. Correlation and regression analyses yielded that independent variables pertaining to the adoption of Mobile Money services by the respondents to the questionnaire predicted of the order of 73 percent of variance with respect to increased sales turnover. Most of the twelve interviewees perceived that their business operations had improved significantly after they had begun making and receiving payments in the form of Mobile Money transactions. The participants in the study used Mobile Money mainly to receive money, send money, and buy airtime and a significant majority perceived that Mobile Money services were more cost effective than those of banks. Convenience, safety, and accessibility were the attributes of Mobile Money which the participants cited as having provided their principal motivations for electing to register as users of Mobile Money services. It could be concluded that Mobile Money services exerted a significant positive influence on the financial performance of the SMEs of the participants in the study. On the basis of the conclusions which were drawn from the findings, recommendations were made to the owners of SMEs in Douala, the Ministry of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Social Economy, and Handicrafts and Mobile Money service providers. The findings of the study underscore the role of Mobile Money services as an effective means of increasing financial inclusion and financial performance and could be useful to academics, owners and managers of SMEs, financial institutions in Cameroon and elsewhere, and also relevant policy makers.

The 2015 mandate of Europay MasterCard and Visa (EMV) “chip card” technology in the U.S. left the payments market primed for the adoption of alternative technologies. The goal of this study is to determine the factors that contribute to the adoption of new, alternative payment technologies by integrating the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Switching Cost Theory and operationalizing both theories in a consumer context. Through a survey of 210 chip card and mobile payment users, this study finds the TAM dimensions of self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, and social influence are key determinants of a user’s propensity to use a new technology in a mandated consumer context and introduces switching costs as an important antecedent to a consumer’s likelihood to use an alternative payment technology. More generally, this work integrates those theories to gain insight into how industry mandates influence user behavior with regards to consumer acceptance of alternative technologies.

Abstract:
Information Communication Systems (ICT) has brought about a change in the way people handle transactions. The payment systems have undergone an incredible evolution over the passing years from physical transfer of cash to exchanging money in a digital form. Mobile Payment (mPayment) which is a branch of mobile commerce is one of the areas that is becoming more and more popular these days. In Sweden, there is a growing success of mPayment system such as SEQR, Swish amongst others. However, a huge chunk of the population is yet to adopt the system. Hence, there is a need to identify factors that influence peoples’ decisions to adopt or not to adopt the mPayment system like Swish. This study aimed at identifying the factors that influence the adoption of mPayment system amongst the consumers in Sweden. The research question was: what factors influence the adoption of Swish mobile payment app among the consumers in Sweden? A qualitative research was conducted. A semi structured interview was used as the data collection method. This data collection method was used because this research work seeks to identify the feelings, opinions and experiences of people and this method fits best into the research work. The thematic analysis approach was used for the data analysis. The study showed that impact of the system on day-to-day activities, speculation of risk and trust of the system, integration to lifestyle, speculation of user friendliness and flexibility, age and peer influence are the factors that influence the adoption of swish mobile payment app amongst the consumers in Sweden. Furthermore, the research was viewed through the lens of the UTAUT by comparing the findings of the study and how it relates to the determinants and moderating factors of the model. In conclusion, this study has contributed to the field of ICT specifically the mobile technology field. The conceptual model that was built will be useful for developers and researchers to be able to know the areas to put in more efforts and areas to keep maintaining. Furthermore, this research was conducted within a country that has experience with m-payment apps. Abstract:
Background: Emerging in December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly changed consumer behaviour leading to social distancing and mitigating physical contact. Statistics show an increased use of contactless and mobile payment usage and adoption during the pandemic. It is unclear how valid previous models on mobile payment adoption explain adoption behaviour in emergency situations. While there are few studies approaching the adoption behaviour during the pandemic, there is also little previous research on mobile payment adoption prior to the pandemic in Germany. Purpose: The present thesis intends to advance several previously researched technological adoption frameworks to focus on and measure consumers’ perception of mobile payment technology adopting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, our model provides a basis to understand mobile payment adoption in Germany during the pandemic. Method: Based on hypotheses derived from an adapted UTAUT2 model, we conducted quantitative deductive research reaching 258 questionnaire participants based in Germany. The empirical data was analysed through structural equation modelling. Conclusion: The findings show that Performance Expectancy still represents the primary driver of intention to adopt mobile payments during the pandemic, yet it is strongly supported by the initially contextualised Contamination Avoidance element and complemented by Habit, Effort Expectancy. Practitioners benefit from the study to better tailor campaigns in accordance with the main driver of adoption behaviour, while our findings contribute new insights into technology adoption in Germany during emergency situations.

Abstract:
The mobile payments industry has in recent years experienced large growth and rapid changes. Several different actors are trying to capture the market, to get enough users of their system to reach critical mass. This study investigates how a small Swedish mobile payments company have utilized its business network in their strive to reach critical mass, both in their domestic market and internationally.  The study intends to describe how the company has developed its network and which stages of the network development that have been the most important.  We utilize the ARA-model to analyze the business network and the Uppsala Model and born global theory to define how the company has internationalized.  Our main results indicate that our case company has the mindset of a born global but the particulars of the industry have forced it to internationalize following the Uppsala Model. The development of the business network have to a large part been dependent of the initial activities since this builds the credibility needed to work with large actors.  Moreover the business network is found to not only help the company, but to be essential for their plans on reaching critical mass.

Mobile payments are payments made with a smartphone and are evolving at a quite high pace, even existing in a whole system of urban transportation, such as the Japanese transports through the telecommunications company NTT DoCoMo. In the case of Portugal, this issue has gained importance so that transport and telecommunications companies are actively collaborating to implement mobile payments in transports in the near future. This research focuses on the study of the possibility of an implementation of mobile payments service in transport ticketing using Near Field Communication (NFC), an innovative and recent technology, in Portugal. We will also examine the positive and negative reasons that influence most the adoption of mobile payments. The methodology used for this study was an exploratory analysis using a convenience sampling. The results demonstrate that it is possible an implementation of mobile payments in Portugal, where the main problem relates to communicate the technology to the general public or, in other words, potential users.

Keywords: Mobile payments, usefulness, ease of use, security, attitude, future intentions. An increased reliance on mobile phones by consumers for making retail purchases has been witnessed over the years. Given the pervasive use of m-payments and the incessant diffusion of innovations in South Africa, it is important for marketers to have knowledge of the right set of factors that enhance consumers’ intent towards favouring m-payments in future encounters. This study draws from the undertones of Davis’s (1989) Technology acceptance Model (TAM). Whereas the theory alludes to the influences of both usefulness and ease of use on consumer attitudes and behaviour, this study further amplifies the salience of cosumer perceptions of security as a salient drive towards m-payment acceptance. This is because m-payments involve moneybased transactions and therefore it is important for consumers to have assurance that they operate along a secure platform. The TAM was nominated as the underlying theory in this research owing to its effectiveness when applied during the initial phases of an innovation, to avoid costly mistakes of implementing innovation attributes that do not offer the requiredset of elements for persuading consumers. The purpose of this study was to test an integrative research model of the antecedents of mpayment acceptance using a South African sample of consumers. A quantitative study comprising a non-probability snowball sample of 474 consumers aged between 18 and 50 years was conducted in 2016, in and around the five major towns of Southern Gauteng province in South Africa. The structured questionnaire requested respondents to indicate their perceptions regarding the usefulness, ease of use and security of m-payment platforms they have utilised. In addition, the questionnaire relates to consumers’ attitude evaluations of m-payments in general, as well as their intentions to both use and recommending m-payments to others in the future. Initially, descriptive statistics were performed on the data set, including correlation analysis and multicolinearity testing. Subsequently, structural equation modelling was applied by first, assessing the measurement model using fit indices, confirmatory factor analysis and statistical accuracy tests of reliability and validity. Specification of the measurement model led to the conclusion that the future intentions model was a five-factor structure comprising usefulness, ease of use, security, attitude and future intentions. Thereafter, the results of the structural model (Structural model A) supported the existence of a direct influence between usefulness and security with attitude, while the latter was found to have a direct influence on future intentions. Nevertheless, the relationships between ease of use and attitude was not significant and therefore, alternative hypothesis Ha3 could not be supported in this study leading to the need to specify a vi subsequent competing model. Under Structural model B, perceived usefulness is used as both a dependent and an independent variable since it is predicted by perceived ease of use and in turn predicts attitude towards using and behavioural intention to use simultaneously. The results of Structural model B led to the decision to accept the competing model as the ultimate model for this research since the model presents complete evidence of path weights that are greater than 0.20, interpreted as evidence for significant path outcomes. Insights gained from this study could assist both marketing academics and practitioners to understand the perceptions of consumers towards m-payments. In this regard, if a determination is made that conducting m-payment transactions in secure and effort-free environments could enhance the effectiveness of consumers in their jobs and lives in general, then marketers could be in a better position to deliver a worthwhile innovation solution for South African consumers.

Abstract:
This work deals with the Brazilian market for electronic payments. The aim of this study is to analyze the impacts of technological developments in the Brazilian market for electronic payments, emphasizing innovation and the expansion of financial services to its users. To accomplish that, it begins with a retrospective on the forms assumed by currency, to perform one of its main functions: to be a medium of exchange or of payments. Innovation is discussed by means of a brief literature review, revisiting from renowned authors of economic theory, like Joseph Schumpeter, to contemporary publications in the areas of technology information and services. The characterization of the market for mobile devices seeks to show both quantitative aspects that highlight the booming growth of this market in Brazil and the world, as well as facts elucidating the interaction of this segment with society, in their quest for greater well-being. The development of the empirical part includes the data obtained from a financial institution. The results from the sample verified allowed us to expand the original hypothesis that the mobile device, besides being an innovative gadget, in the light of understanding of the models and theories, is equally able to promote access and better use of financial services to its users.

With the rapid development of wireless technologies and popularity of mobile phones, many studies have tried to integrate wireless technologies with mobile phones in mobile payment, which not only provides consumers grater convenience in life, but also facilitates further development of mobile commerce. Paying via wireless technologies can involve individual privacy and payment confidentiality. In order to prevent the information to be stolen and modified, information security must be assured. However, since the calculating ability of mobile devices is limited, the implementation of security payment is very difficult. The study first examined the security, requirements architecture and problems of mobile proximity payment, then reviewed privacy protection in existing mobile payment systems in businesses and the protocols proposed in previous studies. Then, the wireless transmission technologies and standards for mobile proximity payments one introduced. Finally, we analyzed payment modes in current mobile payment systems and proposed corresponding modes. We hope that a better understanding of potential risks and disadvantages of these systems can thus be achieved.
