Abstract:
Mobile web browsers of today have many of the same capabilities as their desktop counterparts. However, among the capabilities they lack is a way for web applications to interact with local devices. While today’s mobile phones commonly include GPS receivers and digital cameras, these local devices are currently not accessible from within the browser. The only means of utilizing these devices is by using standalone applications, but such applications lack the versatility of web browsers. If a mobile browser could utilize these local devices, then a mobile application could run within the browser, thus avoiding the need for specialized client software. This thesis suggests an approach for adding such capabilities to mobile browsers. In the proposed method, scripted access to local device functionality is facilitated by a local Java application. This application acts as a proxy server and allows the browser to call methods exposed by the local Java APIs. Both the benefits and some security concerns of this approach are examined. The benefits are further highlighted through two example web applications which utilize local devices.

Abstract:
The existing advanced web browsers in today’s mobile phones open up the door for mobile web applications. By using standard webtechnologies, a web page can be crafted to mimic the behavior of a normal application. The purpose of this master’s thesis has been to look at web application development for mobile phones in general and to implement a web-based Mobile TV client to determine whether it would be a viable alternative to existing clients based on other technologies. The advantages are the same as for any other web application: 1) the user avoids the hassle of installing an application and will always run the latest version, 2) developers benefit from the browser’s ability to render generic content, and 3) it is believed that the differences between browser implementations are less than in other environments in which an application would run, for example Java or operating system specificenvironments.

Abstract:
The explosion of mobile applications both in number and variety raises the need of shedding light on their architecture, composition and quality. Indeed, it is crucial to understand which mobile application paradigm fits better to what type of application and usage. Such understanding has direct consequences on the user experience, the development cost and sale revenues of mobile apps. In this thesis, we identify four main mobile application paradigms and evaluate them from the viewpoints of developers, users and service providers. To ensure objectivity and accuracy we start by defining high level criteria and then breaking down into finer-grained criteria. After a theoretical evaluation an implementation was carried out as a practical verification to ensure that the method adopted in analysis and evaluation is trusted and applicable. The selected application is object recognition app, which is both exciting and challenging to develop.

Abstract:
Mobile applications can be developed using a variety of different techniques and technologies. One of the most recent of these techniques is the Progressive Web Application (PWA), a cross-platform solution that is built exclusively using common web technologies. The technique has great potential to become a major competitor to native applications but is currently held back by a few rather significant limitations. This project was initiated because of a significant lack of academic research on the topic of PWA, and a perceived poor level of knowledge in the industry about the technique. The goal of the project was to determine if PWA deserved broader utilization or if the current low level of adoption was justified. During the project, two surveys were conducted. The first survey asked mobile application developers from companies in different countries about things such as their knowledge of, experience with, and opinions of PWA. The second survey asked similar questions but was instead answered by lecturers in higher education in Sweden only. The results of this project show that the average level of knowledge of PWAis very low and that developers’ opinions of the technique are quite negative. The limitations of PWA were found to be few but crippling to its potential to achieve widespread adoption.

Abstract:
What was once simply a clever way of semantically present scientific reports has during the last two decades evolved into a ubiquitous and accessible form of communication. The web has since 2007 also been included in our mobile devices in its entirety. The vast amount of known unknowns regarding the users’ devices, browsers, physical location, context and more makes the development of applications difficult. However, by constructing an app with native technology a bunch of the unknowns can be eliminated and hardware can also be leveraged. In this case though, the app is locked in to a single platform and misses out on the webs ubiquity, its accessibility and its standardized technology. This research is aimed to answer three distinct questions regarding the web’s ability to support a mobile application. The questions consider problems and solutions with theory, practicality and usability. The theoretical investigation is accomplished through researching books, journals, articles, blogs, papers and code. Thereafter follow a development process of a prototype in order to research the technology. The prototype is also used in the usability tests, which together with interviews brings light to how users experience a mobile web app.Result of this research points towards a web platform that is capable of supporting a form intense mobile application, such as a flight booking app. Standards and technologies are evolving for the mobile web and users are more concerned with user experiences than issues with the platform.

Mobile web applications refer to web applications on mobile devices, aimed at personalizing, integrating, and discovering mobile contents in user contexts. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of mobile web applications by proposing a new taxonomy for mobile web applications, and conducting a business analysis in the field of mobile web applications. The thesis reviews the current surrounding environment for mobile web applications, namely, web 2.0 and 3.0, wireless communication technology, and Smartphone platform. The recent entry and success of Apple's iPhone greatly enhanced the public awareness of the Smartphone technology. Google's release of open-source Android platform and T-Mobile's deployment of Android-powered "Dream" Smartphone not only intensify the competition among suppliers, but also provide an open-source foundation for mobile web applications. This thesis introduces a new mobile web application taxonomy to systematically study the values and the groupings of the mobile web applications. By introducing features and categories, the taxonomy provides a framework so the related companies and businesses can be comparatively analyzed and summarized. Selected case companies are studied in the light of the taxonomy. The thesis discusses the key issues of mobile web aggregation, namely, mobile application development platform, context modeling, mobile user interface, mobile application logic, and mobile web aggregation strategy.
(cont.) "System Thinking" is applied to the management of mobile web application business. The market ecosystem, the value proposition, and the revenue model for mobile web application are described. A system dynamic model is constructed to understand the dynamic among the key factors in the mobile web business. Experimental results are reported in the thesis.

Abstract:
Modern software applications need to run on a variety of web and mobile platforms with diverse software and hardware-level features. Thus, developers of such software need to duplicate the testing and maintenance effort on a wide range of platforms. Often developers are not able to cope with this increasing demand and release software that is broken on certain platforms, thereby affecting a class of customers using such platforms. Hence, there is a need for automating such duplicate activities to assist the developer in coping with the ever increasing demand. The goal of my work is to improve the testing and maintenance of cross-platform web and mobile applications by developing automated techniques for comparing and matching the behavior of such applications across different platforms. To achieve this goal, I have identified three problems that are relevant in the context of cross-platform testing and maintenance: 1) automated identification of inconsistencies in the same application's behavior across multiple platforms, 2) detecting features that are present in the application on one platform, but missing on another platform version of the same application, and, 3) automated migration of test suites and possibly other software artifacts across platforms. I present three different scenarios for the development of {cross-platform} web and mobile applications, and formulate each of the three problems in the scenario where it is most relevant. To address and mitigate these problems in their corresponding scenarios, I present the principled design, development and evaluation of the two techniques, and a third preliminary technique to highlight the research challenges of test migration. The first technique, X-pert identifies inconsistencies in a web application running on multiple web browsers. The second technique, FMAP matches features between the desktop and mobile versions of a web application and reports any features found missing on either of the platform versions. The final technique, MigraTest attempts to automatically migrate test cases from a mobile application on one platform to its counterpart on another platform. To evaluate these techniques, I implemented them as prototype tools and ran these tools on real-world subject applications. The empirical evaluation of X-pert shows that it is accurate and effective in detecting real-world inconsistencies in web applications. In the case of FMAP, the results of my evaluation show that it was able to correctly identify missing features between desktop and mobile versions of the web applications considered, as confirmed by my analysis of user reports and software fixes for these applications. The third technique, MigraTest was able to efficiently migrate test cases between two mobile platform versions of the subject applications.

This dissertation has contributed to develop a structured didactic tool that integrates existing quality information on Web Information Systems, from properly accredited sources, making it available to the target audience (engineering students outside the area of information and communication technologies), indicating and helping them to find the best course of action in this learning process. The didactic tool can be currently found in three different formats – Website that uses a Content Management System software, Android mobile application and text document – thus attempting to reach the largest number of individuals within the target audience. The didactic tool is oriented to properly structured self-learning. It discusses the main theoretical foundations on Web Information Systems: concepts, definitions, architecture and its layers, building components (databases, Web Services, user interface in Android mobile application and Website formats). Provides recipes for cases of practical use that are expandable to different areas, for example, the development of a system that makes use of a LAMP server, in which there are RESTful services that provide the information stored in a database to be accessed in an Android mobile application. The tool has not been yet tested and validated in the student community, but first impressions are very promising.

Abstract:
In recent times, attention to the indoor plants in the houses has increased, which can be used to produce food or just for decoration and for health purposes. However, moving plants from their original place in nature to a closed place leads to negative effects due to changing environmental parameters around them. For instance, fluctuations in temperature, light, and soil moisture might affect indoor plant growth process. This work investigates the possibility of using the smart mobile and web applications to monitor remotely the most of changing environmental parameters around plants. These parameters can give the user the real-time information on air temperature and humidity, soil temperature and moisture, as well as amount of light. The Top-down method has been used to design a monitoring system to help the user keep informed of indoor climate changes. This system contains Raspberry and some sensors that are used in sensing various environmental conditions. It also includes the software component which defines services and actions to be taken on the data collected by sensing objects. The system is tested and evaluated in the indoor environment to prove the required concepts. The results indicated that web and mobile interfaces transfer data in real-time manner and send environmental information to the user. The data collected is visualized by different charts and figures to give a better understanding of the surrounding conditions in which the plant grows. It is concluded that the proposed system provides a user-friendly monitoring application to monitor the most indoor environmental parameters.

Abstract:
Today, Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing and Web Services play an important role in networking and computing. P2P computing, that aims addressing all the resources in a network and sharing them, is an old paradigm that gains importance nowadays with the advent of popular file sharing and instant messaging applications. On the other hand, a Web service is a software system that has an interface allowing applications to interact with other applications through Internet or intranet. Providing methods for publishing and discovering Web services from which mobile devices can facilitate in a P2P environment enables exploitation of P2P and Web service technologies efficiently by mobile devices. This also extends the range of devices that facilitate P2P and Web services technologies from servers and desktop computers to personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile phones. In this thesis, an architecture that enables publishing and discovering Web services for mobile clients that are inter-connected in a P2P environment is introduced. Key issues in this architecture are allowing mobile devices to join in a P2P network group, publishing Web services and discovering these services in P2P network. Invoking Web services that are published and discovered is another key issue in this architecture. The architecture introduced exploits P2P and Web services standards using various tools for mobile devices. For the purpose of organizing a P2P environment, JXTA protocols and services are used. WSDL is used for describing Web services. JXTA advertisements help in publication and discovery of Web services
and BPEL enables composition, deployment and execution of Web services. The architecture introduced within the scope of this thesis combines all these standards with tools that enable use of these standards on mobile devices. The work done in this thesis is realized as a part of Artemis, a project funded by European Commission for providing interoperability of medical information systems.

Abstract:
One of the main challenges of mobile development lies in the high fragmentation of mobile platforms. Developers often need to develop the same application several times for all targeted platforms, raising the cost of development and maintenance. One solution to this problem is cross-platform development, which traditionally only includes mobile applications. However, a new approach introduced by Google in 2015 also includes web applications. Progressive Web Apps, as they are called, are web applications that can be installed on mobile and behave like mobile applications. This research aims at studying and comparing their performance to mobile applications on Android, especially in terms of smoothness, memory and CPU usage. To that end, we analyzed the Rendering pipeline of Android and Chrome and deducted a smoothness metric. Then, a Progressive Web App, a Native Android and a React Native Interpreted Application were developed and their performance measured in several scenarios. The results imply that ProgressiveWeb Applications, though they have great benefits, are not as smooth as Mobile applications on Android. Their memory performance and CPU usage lag behind Native Applications, but are similar to Interpreted applications.

Developing native applications for different platforms with different resolutions and screen sizes is both time consuming and costly. If developers were able to develop one web based application which can be used on multiple platforms, yet retain the same level of security as a native application, they would be able to reduce both development time and costs. In this thesis we will investigate the possibilities of achieving a level of security in a web-based application that can equal that of a native application, as well as how to develop an application that uses the Mina Vårdkontakter (My Healthcare Contacts) framework.

The smartphone market in recent years has grown sharply and with it the possibilities to mobile devices programmers have also grown. This expanding market is currently dominated by two operating systems: Android and iOS. Although these two have a big share of the market (91% of the smartphones sales in 2012 were from one of these two systems) is in the programmer interest to develop applications that are compatible with the largest number of devices and operating systems possible. Companies like PT Inovação have great interest in this market and want to have at their disposal the best tools available to develop application that can attract customers. As such, this dissertation is a study, proposed by PT Inovação, of a method for the development of mobile applications, which makes easier to create applications compatible with several devices and systems. The aforementioned method is the development of mobile applications based on web technologies (HTML5, CSS and Javascript). To study this method several mobiles hybrid applications were developed based in applications already developed, by PT Inovação, using native technology. After the development phase, it was made a comparative study between the hybrid and the native applications, to comprehend which ones had better performance, were easier to develop and had more appealing design, for the several elements that constituted the applications. The conclusions of this study are the main result of the dissertation.

This thesis explores techniques for extending Department of Defense (DoD) Information Technology (IT) capability from web-based desktop clients to mobile platforms. Specifically, we examine how existing data services can be consumed by native and web-based mobile clients without modification to the services. We consider the data access layer, the User Interface (UI) design, and the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) as areas to compare and contrast each implementation. We develop a web-based application and implement comparable capability on native and web-based mobile clients. We determined that native applications and mobile aware web applications are capable of consuming an existing web service without modifying the service. In general, we find no clear advantage between our mobile implementations when consuming existing web services and maintaining a consistent UI. We found that, while developing a data access module, it is difficult to share code between an existing web application and a native mobile application. We find that in some cases, a mobile aware web application excels at rapidly deploying on multiple devices and because it maintains a single code baseline lowering the TCO.

The rapid development of ICT(Information and Communication Technology) brought huge impact to all industries. Mobile internet, Web 2.0, positioning technology are deployed world-widely, that initialized inner request of new technologies in the field of tourism as well. By enjoying the convenience brought by new technologies, more and more users starting to focus on privacy issues. As known, there is a contradiction between the quality of recommended location-based services and privacy. Detailed user profile and precise location information are needed for providing location-based service with high efficiency and quality, while privacy preservation requires hiding user's profile and location. Many recent researches aims to seek a balance between them, to obtain the best quality of the LBS in the context of the least exposed user profile content and location information. In this thesis, the author focused mainly on the privacy of mobile user profile, which covers both personal characteristics and location information.1, Customized user privacy model considering both personal attributes and spatial and temporal location is defined for mobile user.In this research, we proposed customized privacy model for every user to define, his/her own meaning of privacy. With this model, for different travel purpose, or even for different time and location, they can have different definitions for their privacy.2, Minimized the data to be stored on server.Profiles are stored in two different ways, complete profile is stored on the client side, and only the values of the attributes that are able for the users to share are stored on the server side, thus minimized the data to be stored on server.3, Customized levels of granularity of disclosure of location and time are adjustable for users. For frequently changing attributes such as location and time, user can disclose them with suitable granularity, in order to obtain expected service from the service providers. Keywords: privacy, location, user profile, mobile, tourism

Abstract:
Web applications are becoming increasingly sophisticated and functionality that was once exclusive to regular desktop applications can now be found in web applications as well. One of the more recent advances in this field is the ability for web applications to render 3D graphics. Coupled with the growing number of devices with graphics processors and the ability of web applications to run on many different platforms using a single code base, this represents an exciting new possibility for developers of 3D graphics applications. This thesis aims to explore and evaluate the technologies for 3D graphics that can be used in web applications, with the final goal of using one of them in a prototype application. This prototype will serve as a foundation for an application to be included in a commercial product. The evaluation is performed using general criteria so as to be useful for other applications as well, with one part presenting the available technologies and another part evaluating the three most promising technologies more in-depth using test programs. The results show that, although some technologies are not production-ready, there are a few which can be used in commercial software, including the three chosen for further evaluation; WebGL, the Java library JOGL and Stage 3D for Flash. Among these, there is no clear winner and it is up to the application requirements to decide which to use. The thesis demonstrates an application built with WebGL and shows that fairly demanding 3D graphics web applications can be built. Also included are the lessons learned during the development and thoughts on the future of 3D graphics in web applications.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we focused on two problems in mobile application development: contextualization and large-scale testing. We identified the limitations of current contextualization and testing solutions. On one hand, advanced-remote-computing- based mobilization does not provide context awareness to the mobile applications it mobilized, so we presented contextify to provide context awareness to them without rewriting the applications or changing their source code. Evaluation results and user surveys showed that contextify-contextualized applications reduce users' time and effort to complete tasks. On the other hand, current mobile application testing solutions cannot conduct tests at the UI level and in a large-scale manner simultaneously, so we presented and implemented automated cloud computing (ACT) to achieve this goal. Evaluation results showed that ACT can support a large number of users and it is stable, cost-efficiency as well as time-efficiency.

Abstract:
This thesis compares a native Android application with two different classes of cross-platform applications, an interpreted application developed in React Native and a Progressive Web-Application (PWA). The main contribution of the thesis is a comparison table, placing application features on the y-axis and the evaluated frameworks on the x-axis. This table in conjunction with the cost analysis provide clear framework selection guidance. The evaluated applications were created to evaluate the frameworks' fulfillment of the enumerated features. A user study was performed to learn if there was any discernible difference between the evaluated applications. Qualitative data obtained from a think-aloud in the user study, indicates a slight preference for the PWA, despite a smaller feature set. However, quantitative analysis from a User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) failed to show any systematic UX performance difference over the evaluated applications. Therefore, it is concluded that cross-platform applications are able to both emulate and even outperform a native experience in some regards, with the added advantage of significantly offsetting both development and maintenance costs. Finally, we recommend using a cross-platform mobile application framework if it provides all the features required by the intended application.

Abstract:
Discovering the surroundings while walking using a mobile device is now possible by coupling new technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and location-based services. Many mobile applications have been designed for that purpose recently. The surroundings of the user are presented on the screen of her mobile device using the location data and she can interact with her environment through a digital information layer superimposed on the captured scene. However, since the amount of geo-referenced information increases every day, there is a growing need for a generic approach that aims at presenting information in a structured manner and adapted to different application domains and users profiles. Our work focuses on the definition of a data model for 3D objects to be used in mobile AR applications. The data model we propose prioritizes access to available spatiotemporal and thematic information about real-world objects. While Augmented Reality appears to be well-suited for searching location-based information, most of the AR approaches focus on domain specific scenarios and we observe that there is no generic data model dedicated to information search and discovery that could be re-used in various AR applications. On the other hand, Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud is an ever-growing set of structured and interlinked datasets published on the Web. It contains vast amounts of spatiotemporal information that can be exploited by location-based mobile applications and presented using AR for fostering interaction. In our research, the LOD cloud serves as a basis for information retrieval during the AR experience of the user. For this purpose, we first publish 3D objects that correspond to real-world objects (buildings, monuments, etc.) on the Web by using our data model and interlink them with data sources on the LOD cloud. Then, using our data model, any real-world object can be represented by three informational dimensions: themes (describing the roles or functions of this object), space (through its 3D geometry), and time (the period linked to its existence). Each change in the life of a real-world object is represented in the model by semantic information following the LOD publishing principles. This allows a binding between the content of our data model and the LOD cloud. As a consequence, on her mobile device, the user visualizes an AR view built with light and transparent 3D models. She can interact with these AR objects in order to access to information related to the corresponding real-world objects of her surroundings she is pointing at. These AR objects allow the user to mentally construct the referential relationships between virtual and real-world objects, while the mobile application developer can create experiences based on different concepts found on the cloud (thematic and temporal concepts, etc.). This way, the LOD cloud, as a growing and updated structured source of semantic data, becomes the main source of information and facilitates knowledge discovery in AR applications.Using this conceptualized knowledge base, we propose our architecture, called ARCAMA-3D (Augmented Reality for Context Aware Mobile Applications with 3D), whose modules allow application designers and developers to create their own AR applications for different domains by being able to extend the data model, bind 3D models with other data sources on the LOD cloud, cover a selected part of LOD and feed their application only with these specific data sources. We develop our ideas working on the case study of the Royal Monastery of Brou, in France, and implement a use case scenario for a user visiting the monastery

Abstract:
In conjunction with the rapid growth of mobile devices, web developers are faced with optimization obstacles in providing their products and services to mobile consumers through rich Internet applications. Programmers utilize available research and tools to effectively guarantee optimal performance of their web applications on wide sets of devices. Due the lack of adequate information on rendering performance of mobile browsers, developers either use a pre-existing framework which constrains their application design or expend many hours in code refactoring in attempts to ensure optimal performance of their web applications. To this end, a framework is developed for identifying factors which might lead to significant lag or bottlenecks in web applications. A small web application is used to showcase the feasibility of integrating this framework on pre-existing web applications in order to assess performance of user devices in real-time.

Although learning management systems (LMSs) have been widely adopted by universities in developing countries, their potential to support students' learning has not been fully exploited due to several factors. Some of the factors limiting the more successful implementation of LMSs in developing country universities have been identified and reported in this study. Most importantly, LMS implementation in developing country universities is constrained by limited institutional ICT infrastructures, Internet bandwidth and electricity outages that affect the accessibility of LMS services by the students. The main research question addressed in this study is: How can we better use the available ICTs and ICT infrastructure in developing country universities to enhance the accessibility of the LMS services by students to better support the implementation of LMSs? The research question was addressed through surveys and experimentation. Two surveys were carried out, and the findings of these surveys were useful in: understanding the current state of practice in LMS implementation in developing country universities; defining the problem; understanding the students' LMS expectations and needs; and deciding the nature of the intervention to be implemented. Through the surveys, it was established that the majority of students in the surveyed universities possessed mobile phones, most of which being internet enabled phones. The study therefore explored the possibility of enabling and enhancing mobile access for LMS services so as to enhance students' LMS accessibility through their mobile phones. The design, development, implementation and evaluation of the intervention (the mobile LMS) were achieved through a user-centred development approach that included participatory design, prototyping and user experience evaluation. An impact evaluation of the mobile LMS intervention indicated that: mobile LMS interfaces can lead to students' increased access and use of the LMS through mobile phones; students prefer streamlined mobile LMS interfaces with fewer and block-based services; with streamlined mobile LMS interfaces, students are able to get the LMS services they need on their mobile phones without the need for desktop and laptop computers and without the need for the full desktop LMS interfaces. While the streamlined mobile LMS allows the students an opportunity to more satisfactorily access the LMS services through their mobile phones, it also takes away the pressure from the constrained institutional ICT infrastructure and facilities such as computer laboratories. The design and development process of the mobile LMS intervention highlighted that students' involvement leads to creation of more usable and useful mobile LMS interfaces and that most of the students' mobile LMS needs can be achieved through a cross-platform mobile Web application.

We currently live surrounded by a myriad of computing devices running multiple applications. In general, the user experience on each of those scenarios is not adapted to each user’s specific needs, without personalization and integration across scenarios. Moreover, developers usually do not have the right tools to handle that in a standard and generic way. As such, a personalization platform may provide those tools. This kind of platform should be readily available to be used by any developer. Therefore, it must be developed to be available over the Internet. With the advances in IT infrastructure, it is now possible to develop reliable and scalable services running on abstract and virtualized platforms. Those are some of the advantages of cloud computing, which offers a model of utility computing where customers are able to dynamically allocate the resources they need and are charged accordingly. This work focuses on the creation of a cloud-based personalization platform built on a previously developed generic user modeling framework. It provides user profiling and context-awareness tools to third-party developers. A public display-based application was also developed. It provides useful information to students, teachers and others in a university campus as they are detected by Bluetooth scanning. It uses the personalization platform as the basis to select the most relevant information in each situation, while a mobile application was developed to be used as an input mechanism. A user study was conducted to assess the usefulness of the application and to validate some design choices. The results were mostly positive.

Abstract:
Developers often need to re-engineer distributed applications to address changes in requirements, made only after deployment. Much of the complexity of inspecting and evolving distributed applications lies in their distributed nature, while the majority of mature program analysis and transformation tools works only with centralized software. Inspired by business process re-engineering, in which remote operations can be insourced back in house to restructure and outsource anew, this dissertation brings an analogous approach to the re-engineering of distributed applications. Our approach introduces a novel automatic refactoring---Client Insourcing---that creates a semantically equivalent centralized version of a distributed application. This centralized version is then inspected, modified, and redistributed to meet new requirements. This dissertation demonstrates the utility of Client Insourcing in helping meet the changed requirements in performance, reliability, and security. We implemented Client Insourcing in the important domain of full-stack JavaScript applications, in which both the client and server parts are written in JavaScript, and applied our implementation to re-engineer mobile web applications. Client Insourcing reduces the complexity of inspecting and evolving distributed applications, thereby facilitating their re-engineering. This dissertation is based on 4 conference papers and 2 doctoral symposium papers, presented at ICWE 2019, SANER 2020, WWW 2020, and ICWE 2021.

Modern web applications are distributed across a browser-based client and a remote server. Software developers need to optimize the performance of web applications as well as correct and modify their functionality. However, the vast majority of mature development tools, used for optimizing, correcting, and modifying applications work only with non-distributed software, written to run on a single machine. To facilitate the maintenance and evolution of web applications, this dissertation research contributes new automated software transformation techniques. These contributions can be incorporated into the design of software development tools, thereby advancing the engineering of web applications.

The scientific publications at the core of this thesis offer adescription of the research I have performed over the last five years, andcomprise studies involving several hundred users. My research efforts included the elicitations of the requirements for and thedesign of a number of web and mobile tools to support collaborative seamlesslearning activities. A web-based environment called CeLS was developed tosupport the orchestration of CSL activities. It was then expanded to integratemobile solutions, aimed to extend the ability of CeLS to support educationalinteractions performed inside as well as outside physical classroom. Thesemobile solutions were designed to implement learning activities that supportdata collection, personal response systems and interaction with mobile videos. The main aim of the research was to investigate how best to design tools andsystems to support students during the enactment of collaborative seamlesslearning activities, and to provide teachers with artifacts to design and assessthose. Special emphasis has been given to the exploration of approaches thatenhance the flow, reusability and sharing of learner-generated content acrossdifferent learning activities. Several studies were conducted in order to validateand assess these ideas and concepts. Various data collection methods wereused to gather data from different stakeholders during the deployment of thedifferent CSL activities. The outcomes were processed and analyzed resultingin a set of recommendations concerning the design, development anddeployment of web and mobile applications to support collaborative seamlesslearning. A software architecture including various web and mobile integratedcomponents used to support innovative CSL activities is also proposed.

Abstract:
The integration of mobile and sensor technologies, and the design and implementation of different web-enabled visualizations to support inquiry learning in different educational scenarios encompass the main research efforts carried out in this thesis. These challenges are addressed from the perspectives of mobile and web engineering, visualization and technology-enhanced learning (TEL). Thus, the main research question investigated in this thesis relates to the identification of the main features that can guide the design and implementation of web and mobile applications to support inquiry learning in different contexts. This thesis consists of a collection of four publications that describe the research efforts conducted during a period of three years in relation to the Learning Ecology through Science with Global Outcomes (LETS GO) research project. The research questions investigated and the implemented technological solutions reported in these publications are closely related to the main goals and challenges of this thesis. The design and implementation of the proposed software system was guided, deployed and refined having the following aspects in mind: (1) System Requirements and Architectural Design, (2) System Implementation and Deployment, and (3) System Assessment and Web Usability Testing. During the three years of development efforts, three software prototypes were implemented utilizing service-oriented approaches. These efforts have been tested with more than 200 users in connection to several trials that took place during this period. The user trials allowed testing the software application throughout three development iterations on authentic settings, while new requirements continuously emerged in these activities. This process made it possible to verify that user requirements were adequately addressed while satisfying their needs. The outcomes of these activities led to the design and implementation of a system architecture that relies on service-oriented approaches and open standards. The main outcomes of this thesis are presented in the form of Architectural Concepts, as they can be used to guide the design and implementation of web and mobile applications to support inquiry learning. The idea behind architectural concepts is to provide a set of tools for supporting the overall life cycle of a software development process, such as requirements, design, implementation, deployment and testing while coping with rapid changes of technological implementations. Some of the architectural concepts identified in this thesis correspond well with the kind of support that inquiry-learning activities require. They provide solid foundations in terms of possibilities to tackle the requirements for supporting inquiry learning in a flexible manner.

Abstract:
Many health care providers aim to become more patient-centered, and developing mobile health applications for patients might help achieve this. In the light of this, this thesis explores if the progressive web application (PWA) concept is suitable for mobile health applications. It is investigated by developing a PWA intended to be used to gather health care patients’ self assessments. The work follows the double diamond design process with: a discover phase containing a literature study, interviews with experts, and partaking in a workshop; a define phase where system requirements are specified; a develop phase with lo- and mid-fi prototypes as well as usability tests with six test users; and a deliver phase where the application is implemented using Polymer 2.0 and web components. To furthermore assess the patients satisfaction of a PWA, an evaluation phase is conducted where eleven test users tries it during five consecutive evenings and answers a survey at the end. The general opinions were that they thought it worked good and was easy to use, indicating that a PWA can be suitable for this purpose. Following this and discussions of findings, we suggest guidelines for how to design and implement a PWA for similar projects. However, the developed PWA was due to shortage of time not completely finished and the test users support for PWA features were rather limited, so future investigation is recommended to determine if PWAs are suitability in this context.

Abstract:
As the number and diversity of applications available to mobile users increases, there is an increasing need for developers, network service providers, and users to understand how users perceive the network performance of these applications. MySpeedTest is a measurement tool that actively probes the network to determine not only TCP throughput and round trip time, but also the proximity to popular content providers, IP packet delay variation, and loss. It also records other metadata that could affect user experience, such as signal strength, service provider, connection type, battery state, device type, manufacturer, time of day, and location. The tool also takes passive measurements of the applications installed on the device and the network usage of these applications. My SpeedTest is available on the Google Play Store and currently has 1300+ active users. This thesis presents the design and implementation of MySpeedTest as well as effect of metrics like latency and IP packet delay variation on performance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In recent years, innovation and the subsequent technological advancements have gained significance in shaping consumer behavior to a disruptive extent. Especially with the advancements in mobile technology, consumer behaviors shifted towards an elevated expectation of mobility and increased interactivity. Marketers who seek a better degree of access to the consumer market and provide customer satisfaction needed to adopt new tools and methods in communication, which would align with their target groups more effectively. Mobile marketing emerged as an innovative technique that is based on and driven by this change in consumer behavior; therefore it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of its approach and implementation. In this light, this research paper employs a quantitative approach based on the results' analysis of an online survey conducted by the Author of the thesis, aimed at testing whether there is a strong correlation between mobile marketing efforts and customer satisfaction. Consequently, one can conclude that the same mobile devices that serve as convenience for consumers, serve as an effective channel of communication for marketers, whereas with an integrated approach where other components of the marketing mix support mobile content, the likeliness of attaining consumer satisfaction is higher.

Abstract:
On today’s web, a web page needs to load fast and have a great user experiencein order to be successful. The faster the better. A server side rendered webpage can have a prominent initial load speed while a client side rendered webpage will have a great interactive user experience. When combining the two, some users with a bad internet connection or a slow device could receive a pooruser experience. A new technology called Amplified Mobile Pages (AMP) wascreated by Google to help combat this issue. The authors of this report gives an answer to if Google AMP could maintain theuser experience while still contributing with a fast initial load speed for applica-tions. To do this, we conducted an experiment through creating a Google AMPapplication and compared it to another application using a different renderingengine called Pug. We have also measured the metrics: page load time, speedindex and application size between the two applications. To fully understandthe AMP format, the authors conducted a literature study, to further strengthentheir findings.Google AMP is a great technology but it can still grow to become better. Theformat could increase the speed of a website, however the same result could beachieved without AMP if focus was set on writing a fast application. From theexperiment, the authors concluded that Google AMP takes a great time to learnbecause of its own version of JavaScript through modules. The format also hasa different structure than standard HTML. From the tests, a smaller applica-tion does not favor the implementation of AMP. We did however derive fromthe experiment and the literature study that bigger applications could benefitfrom the perks of AMP and could therefor be a potential choice for old and newapplications.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the Knowledge Management Information Tool (KM-IT) Vendor Management Web Service and its reliability features. KM-IT is a web-based knowledge management information tool for the deactivation and decommissioning (D&D) user community. The Vendor Management (VM) module provides a directory service for searching D&D vendors. Clients have an increasing need to integrate and display the vendor information in their own applications. As such, this study proposes Web Services technology to provide VM access to clients. Moreover, when clients access information, particularly via mobile applications, they can encounter different failures that may occur on the network or the server. Such problems require fault tolerance in the VM Service. This study examines various reliability standards and selects the WS-ReliableMessaging standard as the best-suited approach to implement the reliability features for the VM Service. Implementation evaluation confirms that the KM-IT VM Service can effectively tolerate different types of failures.

The increasing interest on mobile technologies and the evolutionary context in which mobile applications are developed have made the usability evaluation of these applications an important research area. However, usability evaluations are often avoided by developers or companies due to their lack of experience in the field. This thesis presents the UBICUA (Usability-Based Inspection CUstomizable Approach) technique, an inspection technique specifically proposed to assess the usability of hybrid mobile web applications (i.e., applications that rely on the Internet, such as widgets). Also, our approach is customizable by the inspector s knowledge, which results in a greater usability problem identification even by non-expert users. To support our UBICUA technique s creation process, this research has adopted an evidence-based methodology. Then, this thesis describes how UBICUA was created based on the outcome of a secondary study, two results feasibility studies and observation studies. Our ultimate goal is to increase the quality of hybrid mobile web applications and improve the user s interaction in this technology. We also present the guidelines and resources developed to support the execution of usability inspections of mobile applications in software development organizations.

Abstract:
This report describes the development of a RESTful web service for mobile applications. The web service makes resources from an existing system called kompetensdatabasen ("the competence database") available. Kompetensdatabasen holds information about the capabilities of consultants and about assignments carried out at the IT consultant business Nethouse AB. The web service was developed according to the principles of REST and ROA (Resource Oriented Architecture) which puts focus on making resources available. The resources are made available through the HTTP protocol and the methods associated with it. This means it was designed to use the same technologies as the world wide web. Following these principles when designing the system has been of great importance. To make sure that the service does not leak information to competing companies or violate the Personal Data Act some kind of solution for securing the service had to be implemented. A model for authentication was produced to make the system accessible only for employees of the company.

Abstract:
The Internet created new challenges for radio that managed to maintain and expand the close relationship with its listeners. Recently, innovations in electronics, telecommunications and computing challenged radio to adapt to a new context of media consumption, using Web’s potential, to build mobile applications that give a range of new listening and interaction options to its users and mobile listeners. Throughout this paper, we will illustrate how multimedia convergence, changes in consumption patterns and the emergence of mobile applications contributed to the changes in radio concept. We also performed the study of two cases, analyzing the online presence and mobile applications of the two radio stations with more audience in Portugal: Rádio Comercial and RFM. We conclude that the potentials enunciated in the literature review are, in general, ensured by the two radio stations. However, we can not forget that interactivity and participation should be encouraged, facing Web’s potential and, mainly, mobile access’ potential. Bringing all these changes together, we recover Cordeiro’s (2011) concept that demonstrates in a simple way what could be the future radio, or rather, "r@dio": a cloud-based platform with the cognitive radio as a mechanism. Using technology, radio stations will reach innumerous benefits, reshaping listeners and producers’ role, in a new communication concept.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the use of Facebook and digital educational mobile applications as devices for mediating English language learning. It analyses the impact of these nomadic devices on the English language learning of students at the Higher Institute of Educational Sciences of Guinea (ISSEG).The absence of a Digital Language Resource Centre (DLRC) at ISSEG leads teachers and learners to focus on these tools that socialize, transform and transmit knowledge in the pedagogical sphere. Today, these non-formal tools quite naturally mobilize attention and influence practices in one way or another. The aim is to understand how the implementation of a social mediation system supported by free mobile applications from the start of the licence1 influences the learning of English. More concretely, 53 students 1st year served as an experimental group in Basic Writing. The subject we are dealing with has been the subject of several works that are part of a scientific concern of other researchers (Benali et al., 2018; Nijimbere, 2013; Rabardel, 1995, Lave & Wenger, 1991; Hanson & Robertson, 2007, Villemonteix and Khaneboubi, 2014, Béziat, 2012). In Guinea, English is considered a foreign language and is learned late in the academic process. The Institut National de Recherche et d'Action Pédagogique (INRAP) decided in 2013 to overhaul the existing English language curriculum (MOBEL) to cover both upper secondary and lower secondary schools. For INRAP, bachelors enrolled in the English language stream at university would not feel very comfortable and would lack prerequisites. An analysis of 149 transcripts of the Baccalaureate session 2015 shows that they are not the most deserving ones who are oriented at ISSEG. Of the 149 transcripts analysed, 93 have a low average in the Baccalaureate (average < 10/20). That is to say 57% of the 93 have a mark in English < 10/20. The mode and median of the observations stabilize at 10/20 and the average at 9.96. As a result, the failure (46%) and drop-out (22.5%) rates for the English-language Baccalaureate 1 are relatively high at the ISSEG. After the didactic exploitation of the system, the analysis of the academic marks and the texts published in the account allow us to affirm that the practice of Facebook in 1st year has influenced the academic results of the 28 most active students. In Basic Writing, the group1 (experimental) had an average score of 6.39, relatively higher than the group2 (control), which obtained 6.15. Even if this influence is not very significant compared to the averages of the two groups, the individual interviews reflect the positive effect of the community set up.Finally, by wondering about the conditions for the efficient use of open source applications in southern countries, which can promote Basic English skills, most of the respondents test their virtues. However, the fact remains that integrated basic competences remain limited to the lower level of the taxonomy of cognitive-type learning in Bloom’s (1956).In the perspective of research, the generalized use of social networks, free applications by students contribute to the development of learning strategies and also to visual and sound skills, essential for mastering intonation, rhythm and the understanding of English? One wonders how these teacher-trainees will be able to support the university program and thus become professionally qualified ?

Abstract:
Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are very common at companies nowadays, where they’re not just used for communication but also for doing work. Not all tools are available for such devices though, or at least not in a suitable form that makes it practical to use them. Semko Instrument Register (SIR) is a such a system, developed by Triona, in the form of a website that is not adapted for mobile devices, which is used for downloading calibration certificates for measuring instruments among other things. The goal of this project is to come up with a method of making the system available to as many mobile devices as possible in the simplest way possible. Different methods (websites adapted for mobile devices, native applications and cross-platform applications) are compared and analysed with a focus on possibilities for sharing code on multiple platforms and whether they’re able to fulfill what is required of the application. The design chapter presents such a method which is then evaluated on different aspects, such as the amount of code that can be shared between platforms. The conclusion is that the best way of making a system available on multiple platforms is through websites adapted for mobile devices, but because of this particular system’s requirements a cross-platform solution called Ionic was used instead, as modern mobile browsers are not yet able to fulfill what was required of the application.
