Abstract:
On today’s web, a web page needs to load fast and have a great user experiencein order to be successful. The faster the better. A server side rendered webpage can have a prominent initial load speed while a client side rendered webpage will have a great interactive user experience. When combining the two, some users with a bad internet connection or a slow device could receive a pooruser experience. A new technology called Amplified Mobile Pages (AMP) wascreated by Google to help combat this issue. The authors of this report gives an answer to if Google AMP could maintain theuser experience while still contributing with a fast initial load speed for applica-tions. To do this, we conducted an experiment through creating a Google AMPapplication and compared it to another application using a different renderingengine called Pug. We have also measured the metrics: page load time, speedindex and application size between the two applications. To fully understandthe AMP format, the authors conducted a literature study, to further strengthentheir findings.Google AMP is a great technology but it can still grow to become better. Theformat could increase the speed of a website, however the same result could beachieved without AMP if focus was set on writing a fast application. From theexperiment, the authors concluded that Google AMP takes a great time to learnbecause of its own version of JavaScript through modules. The format also hasa different structure than standard HTML. From the tests, a smaller applica-tion does not favor the implementation of AMP. We did however derive fromthe experiment and the literature study that bigger applications could benefitfrom the perks of AMP and could therefor be a potential choice for old and newapplications.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with a topic of SEO onpage signals, which are important for search engines because of sorting pages in a search engine result page. It focuses on importance of these signals for mobile SERP. Main goals of this study are to describe current recommendations for SEO on-page factors for mobile web and experimentally test real importance of these signals. Based on the results I composed an optimal set of factors with the most benefit for SEO. Theoretical part of the study summarizes basic facts about mobile searching, describes specific mobile users behaviour and describes current recommendations for mobile web onpage optimizing from Google and Seznam.cz. In practical part there is a comparative study of chosen on-page signals. For its needs I had to create few one page static websites. Each one has been optimized for on factor. All websites focused on the same very specific topic to ensure the same initial conditions. By keywords rank tracking in a SERP I was able to determine which signal is more important than others for search engines. The study results contribute to actual evaluation of each on-page signals importance for mobile website. The study could be beneficial for smaller companys websites, which need to get more visible on the net. They are able to optimize their costs by choosing the right set of on-page factors.

Yu, Chen-Hsiang. "Web page enhancement on desktop and mobile browsers." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/79216.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, February 2013.<br>"February 2013." Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 154-165).<br>The Web is a convenient platform to deliver information, but reading web pages is not as easy as it was in 1990s. This thesis focuses on investigating techniques to enhance web pages on desktop and mobile browsers for two specific populations: non-native English readers and mobile users. There are three issues addressed in this thesis: web page readability, web page skimmability and continuous reading support on mobile devices. On today's primarily English-language Web, non-native readers encounter some problems, even if they have some fluency in English. This thesis focuses on content presentation and proposes a new transformation method, Jenga Format, to enhance web page readability. A user study with 30 non-native users showed that Jenga transformation not only improved reading comprehension, but also made the web page reading easier. On the other hand, readability research has found that average reading times for non-native readers has remained the same or even worse. This thesis studies this issue and proposes Froggy GX (Generation neXt) to improve reading under time constraints. A user study with 20 non-native users showed that Froggy GX not only enhanced reading comprehension under time constraints, but also provided higher user satisfaction than reading unaided. When using the Web on mobile devices, the reading situation becomes challenging. Even worse, context switches, such as from walking to sitting, static standing, or hands-free situations like driving, happen in reading in on-the-go situations, but this scenario was not adequately addressed in previous studies. This thesis investigates this scenario and proposes a new mobile browser, Read4Me, to support continuous reading on a mobile device. A user study with 10 mobile users showed that auto-switching not only provided significantly fewer dangerous encounters than visual-reading, but also provided the best reading experience.<br>by Chen-Hsiang Yu.<br>Ph.D.

Abstract:
Displaying web page content in mobile screens is a challenging task and users often face difficulty retrieving the relevant data. It can force them to adopt a time-consuming hunt-and-peck strategy. Application of design principles can improve the view of the webpage data content and reduce the time consumption in viewing it. This is especially true with HTML tabular data content. This thesis discusses the background and applications of the gestalt design principle techniques to HTML tabular data content. An empirical study was performed to investigate the usability of two types of the adaptive styles namely, single and multi-layout. This thesis also compared the adaptive styles that use gestalt principles with simple HTML tabular data on mobile screens. A controlled study which involved university students was performed showed that the adaptive layout styles improved the efficiency of finding information in the website by gestalt principles usage and eliminating horizontal scroll.

Abstract:
User perceived latency is the most prominent performance issue influencing the World Wide Web (www) presently. Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol(HTTP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) have been the backbone of web transport for decades, thus received a lot of attention recently due to end-to-end performance degradation in mobile environments. Inefficiencies of HTTP and TCP strongly affect web response time mainly in resource limited devices. HTTP compression reduces some of the burden imposed by TCP slow start phase. However, compression is still an underutilized feature of the web today [1]. In order to fulfill the end user expectations, we can optimize HTTP to improve Page Load Time (PLT), low memory usage and better network utilization. SPDY, a web latency reducing protocol and HTTP pipelining are a recent proposal to provide faster information exchange over web. Through the course of this work, we present a comprehensive study of new approaches to reduce mobile web latency. At first, we measure the PLT after implementing SPDY, HTTP and HTTP pipelining. Secondly, we also analyze the performance of these protocols after tuning the network parameters like bandwidth and round-trip time (RTT). Finally, we compare the performance of HTTP and other latency reducing protocols. We have conducted all experiments over DummyNet under user-configured network conditions. We critically discuss the challenges of shifting from HTTP to these latency-reducing protocols.

Abstract:
This paper reports a study in how a search service on the Internet can be completed either through a mobile application or through a responsive website, to facilitate use on a smartphone. The focus of the study is on the National Archives' search service National Archives Database (NAD), which is not currently adapted to mobile devices. Our aim is also to investigate how the attitude looks for applications and responsive websites among users and how these views differ between user groups. Together with data from previous research, a study was conducted to examine the pros and cons between apps and responsive websites. In our investigations we have chosen to use two methods of data collection: a quantitative web survey and semi-structured qualitative interviews, to complement each other. A total of nine interviews were conducted with three members from each of National Archives' main target groups. An online survey has also been published on the National Archives and Stockholm stadsarkivs websites.

碩士<br>國立中正大學<br>資訊工程研究所<br>88<br>The World Wide Web has become the largest source of Internet traffic, but the many protocols were not designed for wireless networks. Caching and prefetching are well-known solutions to sovle the problem of long-latency in both wired and wireless network. The performance of prefetching in the basestation can be improved when the basestation has the caching information of mobile hosts. But when the mobile hosts have high mobility . The information validation will degrade the performance when handoff occurs and the web pages should be fetched again. Here we propose a method which send the cache information in wireline links instead of wireless links. And we can retrieve the web pages quickly from the nearby basestation when handoff occurs.

Manjunath, Geetha. "Semantic Analysis of Web Pages for Task-based Personal Web Interactions." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2005/2809.

Abstract:
Mobile widgets now form a new paradigm of simplified web. Probably, the best experience of the Web is when a user has a widget for every frequently executed task, and can execute it anytime, anywhere on any device. However, the current method of programmatically creating personally relevant mobile widgets for every user does not scale. Creation of these mobile web widgets requires application programming as well as knowledge of web-related protocols. Furthermore, these mobile widgets are also limited to smart phones with data connectivity and such smart phones form just about 15% of the mobile phones in India. How do we make web accessible on devices that most people can afford? How does one create simple relevant tasks for the numerous diverse needs of every person? In this thesis, we attempt to address these issues and propose a new method of web simplification that enables an end-user to create simple single-click widgets for a complex personal task - without any programming. The proposed solution enables even low-end phones to access personal web tasks over SMS and voice. We propose a system that enables end users to create personal widgets via programming-by-browsing. A new concept called Tasklets to represent a user’s personal interaction, and a notion of programming over websites using a Web Virtual Machine are presented. Ensuring correct execution of these end user widgets posed interesting problems in web data mining and required us to investigate new methods to characterize and semantically model browser-based interactions. In particular, an instruction set for programming over web sites, new domain-specific similarity measures using ontologies, algorithms for frequent-pattern mining of web interactions and change detection with a proof of its NP-completeness are presented. A quantitative metric to measure the interaction complexity of web browsing and a method of classifying relational data using semantics hidden in the schema are introduced as well. This new web architecture to enable multi-device access to user's personal tasks over low-end phones was piloted with real users, as a solution named SiteOnMobile, and has received very positive response.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立高雄應用科技大學<br>資訊管理研究所碩士班<br>105<br>The rapid popularity of smartphones has led to the rise of the Internet market; thus, topics such as the effects of online advertising have become increasingly crucial. It is known that viewers exhibit different levels of attention toward such advertisements based on the type of webpage they are browsing (e.g., viewers typically focus their attention on the text when browsing text or video pages, and may overlook advertisements). Therefore, this study focused on the impacts that the four common types of webpages (i.e., text, picture, picture–text , and video) have on users’ attention and memory regarding the advertisements they observed while browsing the Internet on a smartphone. This study also explored whether product involvement had a moderating effect on the relationship between certain types of webpages and the viewers’ attention to the advertisements shown within. A laboratory experiment method was conducted, wherein a mobile phone tourism-focused website was constructed for testing. The website consisted of eight webpages, each of which contained a banner advertisement that displayed fictitious brand products. Users were directed to browse the website and then were requested to complete a questionnaire that measured their ad recall. Total 69 participants participate in the study. The questionnaire is applied for measuring the ad recall, and eye-tracking is conducted for measuring visual attention. The results indicated that (1) webpage type can influence viewers’ attention toward web banners, and the influence is, from high to low, as follows: picture–text > video > picture > text. This finding partially supports Hypothesis I of this study; (2) viewers more clearly remember a web banner if they pay more attention to it. This discovery supports Hypothesis II of this study; and (3) regardless of the degree of product involvement, webpage type always influences viewers’ attention toward web banners, which rejects Hypothesis III of this study. However, product involvement has direct influence on the visual attention toward web banner.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>資訊科學與工程研究所<br>94<br>It is not uncommon to browse Web pages via mobile devices because of their popularity today. However, most Web pages were designed for desktop computers that are equipped with big screens. When browsing on the mobile devices, a user might have to scroll up and down all the time to find the information they want simply because of the limited visible area, which is really not user-friendly at all. Although some famous websites have already provided additional condensed version of their content, it would be cumbersome to spend the time on maintaining multiple versions of the same content from the Web developers’ perspective. Besides, some commercial products choose to reformat Web pages to fit the screen width of mobile devices, thereby eliminating the need for horizontal scrolling. However, the result of reformatting Web pages doesn’t necessarily help the user a lot. Since the result page still contains the irrelevant information. On this basis, we propose a system to help users personalize Web pages. For example, a user can determine which blocks of content in a Web page should be retained when he/she browses that page on mobile devices. The sequence of those blocks can also be altered according to individual preferences.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>資訊學院碩士在職專班資訊組<br>94<br>Using mobile devices to surf WWW is popular gradually. However, the Web pages for desktop computers are not conforming to the mobile devices. There are many limitations on mobile devices, such as small screen and low bandwidth. Through using Web adaptation technologies, we adapt the pages to mobile devices. Web pages are transformed into small pages for displaying on small screen finely. In this paper, we introduce representative efforts adopting respective analyzing techniques. These content adapting implementations can automatically adapt web pages to mobile devices. However, there are two issues we must solve. One is content extracting and the other is adapting correctness. Users always only care about a part of the web content. Content adapting applications should provide a function to extract these parts form a web page. Besides, theses implementations do no adapt content finely in some kinds of web. Therefore, we proposed a pattern-oriented Mobile Web Page Generation scheme. With our scheme, users can customize their own mobile page easily and rapidly. Finally, we implement a system to prove our scheme and compare with existing implementations.

There are many factors, such as font size, image size, frame support, etc, that will cause problem for small screen device. To address the problem described above, client application software of mobile devices can be used to convert web pages for small screen. A second solution is to design the web site to accommodate for small screen. Therefore the enterprise web design and improvement are the main purpose of this study. The browsing issue on the majority of web sites is due to a large number of transactions arise from the use of the framework of mobile devices browser. The solution is to minimize the complexity of the development of web designers, and allowing a mobile device viewing every information on the web page. The second purpose is to follow up the recommendations of W3C that suggests conversion HTML to XHTML, and this study shall test an automatic conversion tool of XHTML for the dynamic web pages.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立彰化師範大學<br>資訊工程學系<br>102<br>Recently Augmented Reality(AR) has attracted academic attention, because it has been applied to enhance learning effectively. Since lots of elementary schools in Taiwan only provide the campus plants with their name, the information about the plants are ignored. It makes children can not understand the characters of plants very well. In this paper, augmented reality was designed into a mobile phone application to provide children to learn campus plants. Moreover, competitive learning strategy is applies to observe the effects between using augmented reality materials and using web pages materials. This action research has been employed to 29 sixth-grade children grouped in the experimental group and the control group. Both groups of students are introduced into competitive learning in the learning process to learn campus plants. After learning is done, the students are given the post-test and questionnaire for evaluating the learning process. The experimental results show that using augmented reality materials can get better performance than using web page material on campus plants learning under competitive environment. Since students are familiar with web pages now, they are easy to ignore some provided contents of web pages under the pressure of competition. This research introduces campus plants by applying a mobile learning system with augmented reality. It shows that this proposed application can enhance students' learning through augmented reality method to present instant messages about campus plants.
