AbstractData collection takes up much of the already limited time archaeologists have to excavate and often requires additional time to digitize. Moreover, despite efforts to standardize data, archaeologists often find errors such as blank or incorrectly recorded fields. To avoid these issues, several projects have made use of tablet computers to streamline and digitize data, but this process can be opaque, specialized, and expensive. The resulting hybridity in folk culture gave birth to various religious sects, especially on the Vietnamese-Cambodian border. From the view of late imperial Confucianism, these groups were judged as “heretical sects” and their leaders “heretical masters”. Despite being classified as “heretical”, these local “mas

Abstract:
The mechanisms of sucrose uptake into the vacuole and sucrose efflux from the vacuole were studied using tonoplast vesicles from red beet at two distinct developmental stages. Vesicles from both developing and mobilizing hypocotyls (sucrose uptake and efflux, respectively) accumulated sucrose against a concentration gradient. However, higher rates and maximal levels of sucrose accumulation were obtained with tonoplast from developing hypocotyls. ATP-dependent sucrose efflux was more pronounced in vesicles from mobilizing hypocotyls. Despite the apparent overlapping, the data indicate that the

This paper concerns the migration of American modern dance to Britain throughout the 1960s and 1970s when Martha Graham's technique and repertory were introduced to British dancers and audiences. The author addresses these issues from a historical and phenomenological point of view using her memories and reflections, the data from the research she has conducted into this milestone in British dance history, and the theories of Pierre Bourdieu.

The oil sands region in northeastern Alberta faces various pressures that require rapid knowledge mobilization and decision making, while still acknowledging ecological sensitivities immediately downstream in the Peace-Athabasca Delta (PAD) in the Wood Buffalo National Park. Deliberative exercises may reinvigorate civic life by building citizens’ capacity to engage in other types of civic activities. This study examines members of a citizens’ panel ( n = 56) who participated in a 6-day deliberative event on climate change and energy transition in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada), in 2012. We compared panellists’ civic engagement, political interest, and political knowledge with those of the general population using a concurrent random digit dialling survey conducted 2.5 years after the event ( n = 405). Panellists are more likely to talk about politics, and volunteer in

In the literature on political participation through contestation, the apparent difficulties that can hinder the realization of protests are extensively debated. The high costs associated with the act of protesting can make it an option of political participation mainly associated with the high class. The importance of certain institutional frameworks that more easily give vent to a society that protests is also discussed. Psychological variables are as well explored in this area of Political Science: lacking the horizon of possibilities, certain societies can become distrustful of the efficie

This paper uses social movement theory to examine the rise and development of Boko Haram and AQIM into radical groups. Boko Haram and AQIM were initially established as moderate and conservative Islamist groups in Nigeria and Algeria respectively. AQIM was originally a political party – the FIS but changed names to the GIA, the GSPC, and AQIM each with a different modus operandi. Boko Haram was a local organization that has been espousing an anti-system frame alongside violent tactics since 2009. AbstractStates with large markets routinely compete with one another to shield domestic regulatory policies from global pressure, export their rules to other jurisdictions, and provide their firms with competitive advantages. Most arguments about market power tend to operationalize the concept in economic terms. In this paper, we argue that a state's ability to leverage or block these adjustment pressures is not only conditioned by their relative economic position but also by the political institutions that govern their markets. Specifically, we expect that where a state chooses to draw jurisd
