Abstract:
The emerging techniques of mobile GIS applications, its abilities and its implied limitations ofinternet connections is the main subject in this study. Many of the operations that mobile devicesuse are dependent on mobile internet connectivity. Therefore the potential for it in well connectedareas is great but how would they function in less connected areas? Mobile GIS, which is todaymostly used in devices as smart phones and tablets, has internet connectivity for uploading anddownloading files and other data. Mobile GIS is also dependent on location-based services thatenable the device to get information or take action from the current location of the device. Thisresearch examines the potential usage of mobile GIS in conjunction with the bandwidth of wirelesstechnologies. It is important to study this issue to see if mobile applications can perform upload anddownload tasks within reasonable time in poor mobile coverage. To test the possibilities of mobileGIS in rural areas a test environment is set up in a mobile GIS application for septic tanks. Thetesting is performed by uploading and downloading data with real GIS actions from pre-selectedlocations that have low mobile coverage. The study is comparing the measurements with a scale ofacceptable time for download and upload. The result for registering (uploading) a new point inmobile GIS with three small images is that it requires at least 330 Kbit/s connection to transfer thedata within acceptable time. The results for uploading data without images and downloading giveseven better results and are not as dependent on a good connection for transferring within acceptabletime. The conclusion is that mobile gis applications are able to run within acceptable time measuresin rural areas. The results and other sources were used to make general guidelines for mobile GISapplications for use in rural areas.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) a computerized mapping system for capturing, storing, retrieving, analysing, and displaying spatial data (the type of data that has a geographic location). It is one of the fastest growing high tech fields and has been widely used in my areas where analysis of spatial referenced data is needed. In this paper we developed and implemented a GIS-based personalized Travel Planning application. Our goal is to provide a map based information system that gives recommendation information (e.g. closeby sights, must-see sights) to travellers according to their destinations, locations and preferences. Furthermore, the TP application was developed as a client-side service under the Tourist Information Provider System. It runs on client machines and uses the spatial referenced data stored at the TIP server-side database.

Abstract:
Today, there’s no effective way for field data collection and its associated map objects when planning construction of new roads. The forest industry wishes to be able to do this with a mobile device with or without an internet connection, with the help of an open-source geographical information system-framework. We have therefore conducted a case study. We needed to know what the requirements were. The requirements needed was forwarded during an interview with one person from our partner organization that had contact with a forest company. We identified eight frameworks, whereas five were left after the screening. The screening was done by discarding the frameworks that didn’t fulfill the main requirements that we got from the interview. The five remaining frameworks were analyzed by identifying the pros and cons that were based on how well the frameworks fulfilled the evaluation criterias. The evaluation criterias were based on the requirements we got from the interview as well as the additional criterias that we considered important when working with open-source frameworks. E.g. the quality of the documentation, when the framework was last updated, the eventual cost etc. The framework we finally recommended was “Mapbox”. This framework did not have the highest coverage of requirements. However we decided that it was the most well-suited choice based on the open-source criteria’s we put forward.

Abstract:
This study examined whether the current generation of consumer-grade digital mobile computing technology, so called smartphone technology, is usable to perform and improve field data collection in the context of sustainable forest management. An electronic data acquisition system, based on a handheld smartphone device and desktop geographic information system (GIS), was developed. A proprietary timber cruise application and commercial mapping software were used with the smartphone/desktop GIS to record and process forest stand and geospatial data. Usability testing was carried out to measure workflow efficiency and system performance of the smartphone GIS compared to traditional paper-based methods. The smartphone GIS successfully met performance objectives and significantly increased workflow efficiencies by improving data transfer and processing times over conventional paper methods; however, use of the mobile device resulted in greater data entry errors, increased data collection times, and led to more equipment malfunctions than use of paper recording methods together with a GPS and digital camera. Overall, the prototype electronic data acquisition system was not reliable as a stand-alone solution solely responsible for collecting cruise data, but was found to be well suited for ad-hoc mapping of forest features.

Abstract:
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a technology that can help collect, edit, store, manage, transform, analyze and represent data. This research aimed to show how mobile GIS application can  be designed, developed and applied to electric field work. An Android mobile application, which had been integrated with GIS was developed in Java. The prototype was tested and evaluated by employees of China Southern Power Grid (CSG). The resulting mobile application had three important features and functionalities: map view, location and electrical object querying, and attribute viewing and editing. According to the results of the user testing, the advantages of the application were its improved performance as brought about by the different scales used in the maps, its clear layout, and the speed of completing the query tasks. The disadvantages, on the other hand, were restrictions in the data types used and the query window. The study showed that with wireless communication, GPS and Location-based (LBS) supplements, electric utilities can benefit from this mobile GIS application in the following aspects: 1) eliminate the obstacles of going out in the field; 2) increase the flexibility of field work by faster access to data; 3) increase the accuracy and efficiency of field workers by dealing with the querying and editing task, and field mapping on a portable devices in real time. According to these aspects, electric field work can easily be enhanced by saving time, resources, and costs.

Trincavelli, Marco. "Gas discrimination for mobile robots."

Full text
Abstract:
The problem addressed in this thesis is discrimination of gases with an array of partially selective gas sensors. Metal oxide gas sensors are the most common gas sensing technology since they have, compared to other gas sensing technologies, a high sensitivity to the target compounds, a fast response time, they show a good stability of the response over time and they are commercially available. One of the most severe limitation of metal oxide gas sensors is the scarce selectivity, that means that they do not respond only to the compound for which they are optimized but also to other compounds. One way to enhance the selectivity of metal oxide gas sensors is to build an array of sensorswith different, and partially overlapping, selectivities and then analyze the response of the array with a pattern recognition algorithm. The concept of anarray of partially selective gas sensors used together with a pattern recognition algorithm is known as an electronic nose (e-nose).In this thesis the attention is focused on e-nose applications related mobile robotics. A mobile robot equipped with an e-nose can address tasks like environmental monitoring, search and rescue operations or exploration of hazardous areas. In e-noses mounted on mobile robots the sensing array is most often directly exposed to the environment without the use of a sensing chamber. This choice is often made because of constraints in weight, costs and because the dynamic response obtained by the direct interaction of the sensors with the gas plume contains valuable information. However, this setup introduces additional challenges due to the gas dispersion that characterize natural environments.Turbulent and chaotic gas dispersal causes the array of sensors to be exposed to rapid changes in concentration that cause the sensor response to behighly dynamic and to seldom reach a steady state. Therefore the discriminationof gases has to be performed on features extracted from the dynamics of the signal. The problem is further complicated by variations in temperature and humidity, physical variables to which metal oxide gas sensors are crossensitive. For these reasons the problem of discrimination of gases when an array of sensors is directly exposed to the environment is different from when the array of sensors is in a controlled chamber. This thesis is a compilation of papers whose contributions are two folded. On one side new algorithms for discrimination of gases with an array of sensors directly exposed to the environment are presented. On the other side, innovative experimental setups are proposed. These experimental setups enable the collection of high quality data that allow a better insight in the problem of discrimination of gases with mobile robots equipped with an e-nose. The algorithmic contributions start with the design and validation of a gas discrimination algorithm for gas sensors array directly exposed to the environment. The algorithmis then further developed in order to be able to run online on a robot, thereby enabling the possibility of creating an olfactory driven path-planning strategy. Additional contributions aim at maximizing the generalization capabilitiesof the gas discrimination algorithm with respect to variations in the environmental conditions. First an approach in which the odor discrimination is performed by an ensemble of linear classifiers is considered. Then a feature selection method that aims at finding a feature set that is insensitive to variations in environmental conditions is designed. Finally, a further contribution in this thesis is the design of a pattern recognition algorithm for identification of bacteria from blood vials. In this case the array of gas sensors was deployed ina controlled sensing chamber.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mobile systems which are used professionally are often developed for professions whom work outside of the office. Map presentation is an important component which is used as a foundation to show application specific data or to handle input of information out in the field.Map information or geodata is often handled in two separated formats. First raster information which is picture data and second vector information. Vector data consists of areas, lines and points which have mathematical definitions. Vector data have the advantage by being resolution independent, very accurate and more space efficient than raster data. Unlike raster data vector data does not store information about how it should be presented visually. The presentation can be implemented using source code but it is much more productive to use a style language. In the same way CSS works with HTML. There are a variety of style languages which are applicable on vector maps. Within this thesis we dives deeper into the existing methods of styling vector maps but also look at alternative solutions. A prototype application is to be constructed to implement the chosen solutions. Finally are we going to apply the tested solutions on the existing GIS-application created by IT-bolaget Per&Per.

Abstract:
With the economic growth, the number of motor vehicles has increased rapidly for the last decades, especially in developing countries like China and India. Availability of more vehicles makes it more convenient for people to travel and merchandise transport. The increase of the number of vehicles also brings stresses to public traffic and pollution to the environment. When the number of vehicles on the road is over the available space, it results in traffic congestion. The problem is being studied and there are several solutions to it, like building more roads, rebuilding the existing streets and enlarging the cities. Based on the traffic reason and the environment reason, the government and the institute of environmental protection appeal to the public to take public transport means instead of private cars. But the measure affects the utilization ofmotor vehicles. Global Positioning System (GPS) provides autonomous geo-spatial positioningand navigation service. Once the user enters the destination, the navigation service will show the shortest path from the location of the user to the destination. Following the guide makes the vehicles running purposively, and it is also favorable for traffic control and management. Theoretically, if the diver keeps the same driving mode, the shortest path will cost the shortest time, but in reality, the traffic environment is complex and the driving speed is variable thus the shortest path is probably not the fastest path. In this study, the hinder factors of the speed and traffic are fixed constructions on the road, like: turnings, hospitals, schools, residential areas, traffic lights and the user-controlled factor (sites of traffic jams, accidents, and temporary construction on the road). We take the hinderfactors of traffic and driving speed into consideration while providing the route plan, finding the shortest-time path, and showing the result as an online map via the web Geographic Information System (GIS) application. We show that reducing the travelling time of motor vehicles, makes the traffic flow more rapid and efficient. Alsoreducing the emission time of motor vehicles, diminishes the greenhouse effect. Beside these, the achievement of our study also shows that the public can take advantage of open source tools and data to build their GIS application to do spatial and data analysis.

Abstract:
"Mapping is a way of visualizing parts of the world and maps are largely diagrammatic and two dimensional. There is usually a one-to-one correspondence between places in the world and places on the map, but while there are limitless aspects to the world, the cartographer can only select a few to map" Daniel Dorling, 1996 Map generalization is the process by which small scale maps are derived from large scale maps. This requires the application of operations such as simplification, selection, displacement and amalgamation to map features subsequent to scale reduction. The work is concerned with the problem of effective rendering of large scale datasets on small display devices by developing appropriate map generalization techniques for generating schematic maps. With the advent of high-end miniature technology and large scale digital geographic data products it is essential to devise proper methodologies and techniques for the automated generation of schematic maps specifically tailored for mobile GIS applications. Schematic maps are diagrammatic representation based on linear abstractions of networks. Transportation networks are the key candidates for applying schematization to help ease the interpretation of information by the process of cartographic abstraction. This study looks at how simulated annealing optimisation technique can be successfully applied for automated generation of schematic maps from large scale digital geographic datasets tailored specifically for mobile GIS applications. The software developed makes use of a simulated annealing based schematic map generator algorithm to generate route maps from OSCAR® dataset corresponding to a series of user defined start and end points. The generated schematic route maps are displayed and tested on mobile handheld devices shows promising results for mobile GIS applications. This work concentrates on the automatic generation of schematic maps, which, in the context of mobile mapping, are seen as being a particularly useful means of displaying routes for way finding type and utility network applications.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, we present and evaluate algorithms for statistical gas distribution modelling in mobile robot applications. We derive a representation of the gas distribution in natural environments using gas measurements collected with mobile robots. The algorithms fuse different sensors readings (gas, wind and location) to create 2D or 3D maps. Throughout this thesis, the Kernel DM+V algorithm plays a central role in modelling the gas distribution. The key idea is the spatial extrapolation of the gas measurement using a Gaussian kernel. The algorithm produces four maps: the weight map shows the density of the measurements; the confidence map shows areas in which the model is considered being trustful; the mean map represents the modelled gas distribution; the variance map represents the spatial structure of the variance of the mean estimate. The Kernel DM+V/W algorithm incorporates wind measurements in the computation of the models by modifying the shape of the Gaussian kernel according to the local wind direction and magnitude. The Kernel 3D-DM+V/W algorithm extends the previous algorithm to the third dimension using a tri-variate Gaussian kernel. Ground-truth evaluation is a critical issue for gas distribution modelling with mobile platforms. We propose two methods to evaluate gas distribution models. Firstly, we create a ground-truth gas distribution using a simulation environment, and we compare the models with this ground-truth gas distribution. Secondly, considering that a good model should explain the measurements and accurately predicts new ones, we evaluate the models according to their ability in inferring unseen gas concentrations. We evaluate the algorithms carrying out experiments in different environments. We start with a simulated environment and we end in urban applications, in which we integrated gas sensors on robots designed for urban hygiene. We found that typically the models that comprise wind information outperform the models that do not include the wind data.

Hekimat-Nazemi, Ali. "Gas absorption in mobile beds of spherical packings." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1992. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/8884/.

Full text
Abstract:
Experiments have been conducted to investigate the hydrodynamics and mass transfer performance of some alternative mobile bed packings. The polypropylene packings used in this work were 50 x 38 mm oblate spheroids, 38 mm diameter plain spheres, 25 mm diameter plain spheres and 25 mm diameter slotted spheres. The perspex column was 22 cm internal diameter and 144 cm high and was fitted with a supporting grid having 72% open area. In the hydrodynamics studies, air and water were passed counter currently through the column. Bed pressure drop, mean expanded bed height, minimum expanding gas velocity and volume of liquid hold up for all of the packings were measured at different air and water rates and with two bed static heights of 10.5 and 16.5 cm. The general hydrodynamic behaviour of the fluidized packings has been observed and factors influencing pressure drop, liquid hold up, expanded bed height and minimum expanding velocity have been identified. Evidence for gas and liquid flow through the interiors of the slotted packings and giving rise to higher liquid hold up and a smoother quality of fluidization as compared with the other packings has been found. Plain spheres and oblate spheroid packings appeared to have almost identical hydrodynamic behaviour, although the oblate spheroid was found to show more slugging fluctuation in the bed height at high gas veloci ti e s . In mass transfer studies, dilute C02 (2% voV Vol) was absorbed into sodium hydroxide solutions and the interfacial area and liquid film transfer coefficient were thereby established employing the pseudo first order reaction model for the rate of absorption (known generally as the Danckwerts' model) (41). The experimental results on the Danckwerts' plot lay on a straight line and therefore confirmed the applicability of the Danckwerts' model from which (kL) and (a) could be estimated. The interfacial area per unit volume of expanded bed (a) and per unit volume static bed (as) was found to be higher for the slotted packings than for the plain sphere packings and the oblate spheroid packi ngs. The interfacial area per unit volume of liquid hold up (aL) was higher for the plain sphere packing than for the oblate spheroid and the slotted sphere packings, however, the (a) and (as) for the plain sphere packings were higher than for the oblate spheroid packings. The liquid film transfer coefficient for the slotted sphere packings was higher than for the other packings and was found to be almost the same for the plain sphere and the oblate spheroid packings. The operational mass transfer efficiency (defined as the ratio of the volumetric liquid film mass transfer coefficient to the fluid energy consumption in the bed) for the oblate spheroid packings was found to be higher than for the plain and slotted sphere packings. This efficiency ratio was also found to be higher for the slotted packings than for the plain sphere packings. Finally, the slotted packings appear to offer high volumetric mass transfer coefficients with a smoother quality of fluidization and homogeneous contacting of gas and liquid.

The data needs to therefor bereliably and continuously controlled and updated, especially due to thecomponents of an outdoor environment constant change and move. An effective wayto store, visualize and manage data related to geographic locations is to useGeographic Information System (GIS) solutions. This thesis is applying a user-centered design approach to derive a prototypethat encourages use of web and mobile GIS solutions in the field duringcontrols and maintenance and thereby resulting in more efficient data updateprocedures and maintenance operations. A case study is performed involving thetwo housing companies Svenska Bostäder and Stockholmshem where management andmaintenance of geographic data representing the outdoor housing environment isinvolved in their work and is today managed by primitive methods. Theuser-centered design approach Focus Rapid Contextual Design is applied toderive user requirements in terms of functionality and user interface forfurther use to develop and integrate a prototype within the housing companiesexisting GIS solutions. The overall objective is to investigate, document andevaluate how an user-centered design approach can be applied to introduce webGIS solutions that will improve the workflow between office and field, this byreducing the number of steps performed during a field control by replacingprimitive tools such as paper and PDF maps used today with the suggested GISsolutions. The potential long term impact of this study is to encourage thelayman users that are working in field to use these new solutions instead ofprimitive methods, this by adapting functionalities and user interface in theweb and mobile GIS solutions according to the layman users needs and levels byapplying the user-centered design approach. The Focus Rapid Contextual Design method shows to be successful in terms ofgathering and managing user data in a structured way. Due to tight timeschedule and project resource limitations, an iterative prototype process whereuser feedback is used to redesign the prototype for further improvement was notperformed. Only one prototype evaluation was performed and did not take placein context of use. This lead to weak user feedback meaning that the prototypemost likely could have been further adapted to the users needs if an iterativeprocess that took place in context of use was performed. It would most likelyfacilitate the faster adaptation for the web GIS solutions in the housingcompanies daily work. Encouraging layman users to change from manual to digitalsystems is seen as one if the major challenges during this thesis. Even thougha user centered design approach contributes to reach the potential long termimpact of this study which is to encourage layman user to use the suggestedsolutions, most likely organizational changes and policies are needed toaccomplish process changes and make field workers change their working manners.A small case study like the one performed in this thesis could possibly havebeen performed excluding the Working Models and Storyboarding in the Focus RapidContextual Design method without affecting the final result, this to gain moretime for the iterative prototype process as well as time for involving moreusers. Doing so could improve the work in this study to better reach the statedgoals.

Abstract:
This project has focused on the applicability of using superheated water as an alternative eluent for use in reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). A system based on instrumentation from gas chromatography (GC), HPLC, and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) was utilised with some success. Of particular importance was the stability of the column stationary phases commonly employed in RP-HPLC. The most popular phases based on alkyl bonded silica proved unsuitable due to excessive dissolution of the base silica at high temperatures. Nevertheless, two other phases—one a poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) material and the other a porous graphitic carbon—proved stable to temperatures as high as 240°C. At such temperatures compound stability was good, except for a notable case with nitrobenzene. The mechanism of elution remained reversed phase mode throughout, with polar solutes being eluted before non-polar ones.

Abstract:

This thesis work is intended to analyze whether the municipalities has a need for the new technology of mobile mapping.

Mobile mapping consists of the technologies of laser scanning, photographing and positioning of streets and roads in city environment and in the countryside. When these technologies are operating together a georeferenced three-dimensional image model is created, which has specific coordinates that states its position on the surface of the earth. Thanks to the laser scanning process even measuring can be performed in this model.

The municipal sector consists of many different departments which use visual spatial information. These departments are an interesting target group for this system. Specific departments within the municipal sector, which we considered were the most suitable, have been selected. Individuals within these departments have replied to a questionnaire where several statements were given. The statements are constructed so that the replies that are received as much as possible describe the need for this new technology. In addition to the questionnaire a number of telephone- and in-depth interviews have been done in purpose of creating a basis which is as solid as possible.

The results that have been obtained indicate that there is a rather considerable demand for the technology. The majority of the asked professions have given replies which hint that they would appreciate visual measurable spatial information in accurate and detailed 3D-models. The telephone interviews have pointed in this direction as well.

Since a municipality is organized of a large number of departments which each have a need for the technology, a reference can be made to the expression “many a little makes a mickle”. In other words, the municipal need for the technology is considerable since many different units find their own uses for mobile mapping.

We have after this investigation obtained a result which implies that mobile mapping would be a good investment for the municipal sector.

Abstract:
Civic issues in a society can be reported through a crowdsourcing web application. People can download the application on their smartphones and report the issues such as a pothole or broken streetlight. The report is submitted by taking a photo of the issue and additional information is entered. At first, the reports are submitted to a call center and after analyzing they will be transferred to organizations responsible for this type of events. In such a crowdsourcing project it is very vital to motivate people to participate in the project. The reports are supplied by users and without an acceptable number of users the application would be useless. In addition, having the exact location of a report is very helpful to facilitate the process of solving civic issues. Positioning with smartphones is not very accurate as they do not have strong and accurate GPSs. Therefore, there is a need to improve the accuracy of the positioning process and consequently accuracy of the spatial data. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how to employ GIS to help reporting civic issues and how to design an interesting client interface for such an application, in order to motivate user to download and use it. The goal is also to find out shortcomings and weaknesses of the positioning with smartphones and find a way to improve its accuracy. Some of successful similar applications’ structures and their interfaces were reviewed. In addition, a survey among existing users of crowdsourcing applications has been done in order to find out how to design the application to be interesting for users. Furthermore, some techniques and methods were chosen in order to improve the GPS accuracy especially in the places with a low GPS signal strength. These methods exploit WLAN and some of embedded features in a smartphone such as microphone, camera, accelerometer, gyroscope to improve the positioning accuracy. In the end, along reporting civic issues the user is able to report and get information about cheap and appropriate necessities and public events in different geographical areas through a map-based application. Furthermore, he or she is benefited by some location-based services such as online-food or taxi. The client application’s interface was designed for iPhone. This GIS-based mobile application would be an appropriate alternative for the old reporting methods like phone call or mail. Nevertheless, reporting civic issues itself, cannot be necessarily a strong motivation to attract the user to download and use the application. Therefore, desired feedbacks of the crowd need to be found out in order to encourage them to spend their time for the application. User needs to get motivated to use the application and considered additional parts can be very helpful to reach this aim.

In the final master’s dissertation analysis on current 15below communication platform PASNGR. In addition to this there is a short analysis done on each of PASNGR components to find out usage possibilities. Furthermore, the platform is dependant on Reservation Systems, so analysis on them is done as well, including processes and data. The goal of this dissertation is to create a mobile app integrated into PASNGR. For this reason integration analysis is done, by reviewing components, data and functions. After analysis is done, Business Process Model is created to represent the workflow of the app, including internal processes and interaction with PASNGR. Furthermore a review of mobile application technologies is done, including common tools used in development. By doing this there is the best solution for current 15below developers’ environment found. The solution would mean the least resources to be used to develop the app. Finally a prototype of the mobile application is created, to show the possibilities. The app works on Android and iOS platforms, gives an ability for user to download itineraries and store for offline usage, an ability to scan a barcode at the airport straight from the app, give post flight experience feedback for the airline, receive schedule change notifications and accept them.

Abstract:
This thesis describes in detail how a mobile Geographical Information System (GIS) was designed, implemented and evaluated for the prevailing circumstances of a land regularisation project in Lesotho in Southern Africa. The GIS was developed as an application for the Android platform, primarily with the tablet-computer format in mind, to be used for land registration field work. The main purpose of the paper is to determine whether an ad hoc mobile GIS solution can improve the efficiency of the field work as well as the integrity of the data collected in the field work of the land regularisation project in Lesotho. The aim is also to evaluate the performance and usefulness of modern tablet computers in this context. The application was developed and tested on site in Lesotho on two tablet computers borrowed from Samsung Electronics AB in Sweden. After the development phase, the solution was later implemented on tablet computers of a different model for the remainderof the land regularisation project in Lesotho. The design process started with a field visit where the work-flow of the project was analysed. From this a needs analysis were formed together with the management staff on site that served as a base for the development process. The development and implementation was then performed with continuous communication and evaluation with the personnel of the project. As the development progressed, the solution was also tested and evaluated continuously in the field work. Not only did the solution perform well both software- and hardware-wise, despite strong sun from high altitudes and lack of internet connection in Lesotho, it also exceeded the expectations of the staff. The solution significantly improved the work environment for the field workers of the project and the efficiency was raised, according to the evaluation. A unified management staff concludes in the evaluation of this paper that they will consider using tablet computers together with an ad hoc application for the field work of their next project.

Ercan, Cemal. "Gas phase dispersion in mobile bed and spray contacting." Thesis, McGill University, 1989. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=74224.

Full text
Abstract:
Gas phase axial dispersion for gas-liquid countercurrent contacting in mobile bed contacting (MBC) and in a spray column were measured for 240 combinations of five variables, gas and liquid flow rate, packing size and density and static bed height, for MBC; for 114 combinations of three variables, gas and liquid flow rate and static bed height, for the spray contactor. The experimental technique was dynamic response to a tracer, coupled with moment equations for the system in axially dispersed plug flow (ADPF).
The ADPF model was found to represent well the residence time distribution curves for all experiments with both gas-liquid contactors. Comprehensive correlations were obtained as axial dispersion number, D/u$ sb{ rm G}$d$ sb{ rm p}$, for MBC; as dispersion length, D/u$ sb{ rm G}$, for spray contacting.
For spray contacting, gas dispersion length increases strongly with liquid flow rate but varies little with gas flow rate and column height.
For MBC, axial dispersion number is very sensitive to packing size and to liquid flow rate, but has low dependence on static bed height and gas flow rate. Axial dispersion number is linearly proportional to liquid holdup, with this proportionality a weak function of only static bed height. The trends in axial dispersion number with operating variables for MBC parallel those for countercurrent gas-liquid flow in fixed bed contacting (FBC), but with the much higher throughputs possible with MBC than in FBC, axial dispersion number is typically about one order of magnitude higher.
In both contactors the effect of axial dispersion on mass transfer is demonstrated to be very important at high recovery level. A comprehensive analysis of hydrodynamics and mass transfer in MBC is presented.
For the model of transient response of mass transfer between two fluid phases, both in axially dispersed countercurrent flow, moment equations were derived for the general case and for one special case. These moment derivations provide the needed theoretical framework for future experimental investigation of the degree of interaction between coefficients of mass transfer and of axial dispersion.

Abstract:
This research presents the development and proof of concept of a TeleGeoMonitoring (TGM) system for spatially monitoring and analyzing, in real-time, data derived from vehicle-mounted sensors. In response to the concern for vibration related injuries experienced by equipment operators in surface mining and construction operations, the prototype TGM system focuses on spatially monitoring vehicle vibration in real-time. The TGM vibration system consists of 3 components: (1) Data Acquisition Component, (2) Data Transfer Component, and (3) Data Analysis Component. A GPS receiver, laptop PC, data acquisition hardware, triaxial accelerometer, and client software make up the Data Acquisition Component. The Data Transfer Component consists of a wireless data network and a data server. The Data Analysis Component provides tools to the end user for spatially monitoring and analyzing vehicle vibration data in real-time via the web or GIS workstations. Functionality of the prototype TGM system was successfully demonstrated in both lab and field tests. The TGM vibration system presented in this research demonstrates the potential for TGM systems as a tool for research and management projects, which aim to spatially monitor and analyze data derived from mobile sensors in real-time.

Forghany, Saeed. "Impes modeling of volumetric dry gas reservoirs with mobile water." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/256.

Full text
Abstract:
As the importance of natural gas as a resource increases, the importance of volumetric dry gas reservoirs with mobile water as the dominant gas reservoir types will also increase. This research developed an efficient, user-friendly simulation program specifically designed to model two-phase flow of gas and water in these reservoirs. Since fluid compression and viscous forces are the dominant parameters that control fluid movement in a dry gas reservoir, we used the Implicit Pressure and Explicit Saturation (IMPES) formulation of flow equations in which neither gravity nor capillary pressure terms are pertinent. Therefore, the IMPES approach showed greater stability for all cases considered in this work. The developed simulator is a Visual Basic Application (VBA) code for which the users can obsereve the results in a pertinent Microsoft Excel file. This program allows users to study the depletion behavior of volumetric dry gas reservoirs with mobile water as efficiently and accurately as is now possible in more expensive commercially available reservoir simulators. The program was validated by comparing the results with a well-recognized commercial reservoir simulator (CMG). The results of a battery of tests of this simulator matched very well with results of the commercial reservoir simulator for all tested schemes including different simulation plans; reservoir, grid and fluid data; and well configurations. The observed applicability of the program suggests when dealing with volumetric dry gas reservoirs with mobile water there is no need to employ more expensive commercial reservoir simulators, as the program can reliably be used for any simulation scheme of this case. Furthermore, the program can later be applied in a more robust reservoir simulator as the part that handles dry gas cases.

Abstract:
Abstract In today's traffic, congestion occurs on a daily basis due to different events in the traffic, such as accidents, wildlife or other hazards. Queues are often formed due to lack of information or late broadcasting of information about the events. This work develops a simple web service aimed at users who want and can report in the daily events that affect traffic flow. The service is fast to load on mobile devices and includes a simple form for reporting of events, based on four main types. Data are published not only on the web service but are also spread on to three different social networking services and blogs. One problem with the web application that was not resolved during the work is the adaption to different screen sizes for different mobile devices. The performance of the rescaling varies with screen size and browser of the mobile device used. A further development of the web application is to implement a system for validation. At present no information is verified by more than the user who initially reported the information, therefore further verification from multiple sources / users is needed to strengthen the credibility of the information.

Abstract:
The subject of the report is to review and evaluate the potential for vector graphics in web maps. It ishoped that a web mapping only should display vector graphics. Compared to the traditional webmapping approach, that has raster tiles pre-rendered on the server side for each zoom level. Thedrawback with raster data is that it lacks in information content compared to vector data, which interms can contribute to a richer user interface. However, vector graphics, in comparison to raster datahave a complex data structure and are inefficient to handle such as raster data traditionally is managed. Thanks to new rendering techniques for vector graphics, such as by VML, SVG, but mainly throughthe canvas element, web maps can be improved since vector graphics can be drawn directly in theclient through the browser without the need to generate data on the server side and sent it to the client.By selecting three vector-based mobile mapping libraries that use HTML5, in particular the canvaselement, each library is examined and evaluated based on their ability to use vector graphics, bothperformance-wise, by randomly generating vector data on a map comprising of the world, but alsoaccording to a number of usability criteria. Thereafter, a mobile travel habit implementation isdeveloped based on one of the libraries that meets the criteria the best. The travel habit application isdesigned to register the user’s geographical movements and subsequently display the user’s completedtrip in terms of vector data on a map. The application is developed with the ASP.NET technique thatconsists of HTML, JavaScript and C# languages. Results show that each library is superior / comparesfavourably to the others for at least one of the assessment criteria. Based on the performance test forthe rendering of vector data, the Tile5 library performed best with a rendering time corresponding toapproximately half the time it took for the second best library Leaflet. However, since Tile5 indicatesdeficiencies in the documentation, Leaflet fits the overall established assessment criteria best and isselected for the implemented of the mobile application for travel habits. For future development, Tile5has the potential to become a useful and effective tool for vector web mapping and to compete withthe traditional mapping platforms that renders raster data.

Abstract:
Although air pollution is one of the largest threats to human health, the data available to the public is often sparse and not very accurate nor updated. For example, there exists only about 5-10 air quality measuring points across the city of Stockholm. This means that the available data is good in close proximity of the sensing equipment but can differentiate much only a couple of blocks away. In order for individuals to receive up to date information around a larger city, stationary measurements are not sufficient enough to get a clear picture of how the current state of the air quality stands. Instead, other methods of collecting this data is needed, for instance by making the measurements mobile. GOEASY is a project financed by the European Commission where Galileo, Europe’s new navigational service, is used to enable more location-based service applications. As part of the GOEASY project is the evaluation of the potential of collaborative applications where users are engaged to help individuals affected by breathing-related diseases such as asthma. This thesis presents the choice of architecture and the implementation of a mobile platform serving this purpose. Using sensors mounted on a range of objects real time air quality data is collected and made available. The result is a mobile platform and connected Android application which by utilizing air quality sensors, reports pollution measurements together with positional coordinates to a central server. Thanks to the features of the underlying systems used, this provides a platform which is accurate and more resilient to exploits compared to traditional location-based services available today. The result allows individuals with respiratory conditions to receive much more accurate and up to date information in a larger resolution. It also serves the purpose of demonstrating the potential of the supporting technology as part of the GOEASY project.

Information Systems can improve workflow, speed and security of processes. In the academic area, although new discoveries are always researchers purposes, some processes are established and are not submitted to severe changes throughout time. The data collection follows a given standard, where the collection points and variables are defined then the procedure is executed, recording variable values on each sample. Tools which automate this process are not popular. In cases concerning data where the occurrence place is crucial, the available systems are scarcer. This information is characterized as georeferenced structures, with known coordinates, in some reference system. So, new technologies of information and communication applied in this study resulted in a software that share and present accordingly the field research data, in order to help the Topography and Geoprocessing Lab (GeoLab) researchers of Western Paraná State University, campus, Cascavel, in their agricultural activities. The research of Topography and Geoprocessing Lab has improved the agriculture on Western Paraná. In order to contribute for new progresses in this field, that has Brazilian GDP relevance, some interviews with researchers of GeoLab was done. Thus, aiming at contributing with more relevant breakthroughs for Brazilian GDP and for this area, interviews were conducted with researchers at the lab, examining documents and spreadsheets used for data collection, and a flexible data model was created to meet the numerical data, alphanumeric, temporal, spatial and logical storage. Thus, during the solution development, Java 8 platform, PostgreSQL 9.4 relational database, PostGIS 2.1 extension, and some UML artifacts for documentation were used as well as some UML artifacts for documentation.

Abstract:
This thesis is a project assigned by Gia Premix within the program for bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Karlstad University during spring 2018.   This project contains the design of a mobile emergency shower unit. The project is assigned by Gia Premix with a goal to develop a new product for their portfolio of emergency showers to expand the range of products on the market. Today Gia Premix doesn’t have a department for design and development of new products, because of this Gia Premix choose to do a collaboration and have a project together with Karlstad University.   During the project analyses of stresses in the construction has been made to make sure that the product is safe and secure to use. These analyses have been made both manually and with help of FEM-analyses in computer environment. With a CAD program 3D-models has been modelled. From these models a complete set of drawings on the product has been made.   The project has reached its design goals of a new product for the company with success. Drawings of about 40 components and assemblies is made as a base for manufacturing of a prototype for evaluation. Insulation of pipes and connection of shower units to the pressure system is excluded from the project. Ideas for solutions on these parts can be found under the chapter of ideas for later work. The goal for the details in the excluded part is also reached with good success.

Ai, Chengbo. "A Sensing Methodology for an Intelligent Traffic Sign Inventory and Condition Assessment Using GPS/GIS, Computer Vision and Mobile LiDAR Technologies." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53643.

Abstract:
Traffic signs, which transportation agencies must inventory and manage, are one of the most important roadway assets because they are used to ensure roadway safety and provide important travel guidance/information. Traffic sign inventory and condition assessment are two important components that are essential for establishing a cost-effective and sustainable traffic sign management system. Traditionally, state departments of transportation (DOTs) have conducted traffic sign inventory and condition assessment manually, a process that is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and sometimes hazardous to field engineers in the roadway environment. Methods have been developed to automate sign inventory and condition assessment using video log images in previous studies. However, the performance of these methods still needs to be improved. Based on the need to inventory signs and manage them more effectively, this study has two focuses. The first focus is to develop an enhanced traffic sign detection methodology to improve the productivity of an image-based sign inventory for state DOTs. The proposed methodology includes two enhanced algorithms: a) a lighting dependent statistical color model (LD-SCM)-based color segmentation algorithm that is robust to different image lighting conditions, especially adverse lighting and b) an ordinary/partial differential equation (ODE/PDE)-based shape detection algorithm that is immune to discontinuous sign boundaries in a cluttered background. The second focus of the study is to explore a new traffic sign retroreflectivity condition assessment methodology to develop a mobile method that uses emerging computer vision and mobile light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technologies to assess traffic sign retroreflectivity conditions. The proposed methodology includes a) an image-LiDAR registration method employing camera calibration and point co-planarity to register the 3D LiDAR point cloud with 2D video log images, b) a theoretical-empirical normalization scheme to adjust the magnitude of the LiDAR retro-intensity values with respect to LiDAR beam distance and incidence angle based on the radiometric responses, and c) a population-based retroreflectivity condition assessment method to evaluate the adequacy of a traffic sign retroreflectivity condition based on the correlation between the normalized LiDAR retro-intensity and the retroreflectivity values. For the proposed traffic sign detection methodology, comprehensive tests using representative datasets (e.g. with different road functions, data collection sources, and data qualities) were conducted to validate the performance of the two enhanced algorithms and the complete methodology. For the proposed retroreflectivity condition assessment methodology, the fundamental behavior of LiDAR retro-intensity was comprehensively tested and simulated under a controlled lab and roadway environment to quantify the impact of beam distance and incidence angle. A preliminary test on Type 1 engineer grade stop signs was conducted in the field to validate the performance of the proposed sign retroreflectivity condition assessment method. The results from both of the proposed methodologies are promising.

Abstract:
The colonisation of rivers by fishes is directly linked to abiotic habitat conditions but often impaired by dispersal abilities of fishes and movement constraints such as barriers. The first part of this thesis provides the first comprehensive quantitative analysis of freshwater fish movement while considering fish populations consisting of differently mobile specimens. 160 empirical datasets from 71 studies on the movement of 62 riverine fish species were analysed based on refitted leptokurtic probability-density functions (dispersal kernels). A share of one third and two thirds emerged as a general pattern of the mobile and stationary component of a fish population, respectively. Moreover, four variables were identified primarily determining dispersal distances: fish length, aspect ratio of the caudal fin, river size and time. In the second part of the thesis, the novel fish dispersal model FIDIMO is introduced. FIDIMO provides a GIS-tool for predicting and simulating spatio-temporal patterns of fish dispersal in dendritic river networks considering movement barriers. The fish dispersal model FIDIMO links conceptual considerations on dispersal modelling with empirically observed leptokurtic fish movement patterns and the strengths of geographically explicit modelling in Free and Open Source GIS. In the third part of the thesis, FIDIMO was applied for modelling dispersal of 17 fish species to disentangle the effects of (i) habitat suitability, (ii) dispersal constraints and (iii) network fragmentation on the distribution of river fishes. The results show significant positive effects of both, local-scale habitat quality and species-specific dispersal ability on the distribution of river fishes, whereas no significant effect of barriers influencing the presence of a species could be found. Over longer time periods the importance of dispersal decreased in favour of habitat suitability becoming relatively more relevant in determining species'' presence.

The rapid development of ICT(Information and Communication Technology) brought huge impact to all industries. Mobile internet, Web 2.0, positioning technology are deployed world-widely, that initialized inner request of new technologies in the field of tourism as well. By enjoying the convenience brought by new technologies, more and more users starting to focus on privacy issues. As known, there is a contradiction between the quality of recommended location-based services and privacy. Detailed user profile and precise location information are needed for providing location-based service with high efficiency and quality, while privacy preservation requires hiding user's profile and location. Many recent researches aims to seek a balance between them, to obtain the best quality of the LBS in the context of the least exposed user profile content and location information. In this thesis, the author focused mainly on the privacy of mobile user profile, which covers both personal characteristics and location information.1, Customized user privacy model considering both personal attributes and spatial and temporal location is defined for mobile user.In this research, we proposed customized privacy model for every user to define, his/her own meaning of privacy. With this model, for different travel purpose, or even for different time and location, they can have different definitions for their privacy.2, Minimized the data to be stored on server.Profiles are stored in two different ways, complete profile is stored on the client side, and only the values of the attributes that are able for the users to share are stored on the server side, thus minimized the data to be stored on server.3, Customized levels of granularity of disclosure of location and time are adjustable for users. For frequently changing attributes such as location and time, user can disclose them with suitable granularity, in order to obtain expected service from the service providers. Keywords: privacy, location, user profile, mobile, tourism
