Full textWith a series of prestigeous events such as the Bråvalla Music Festival and the European premiere of Harry Potter: The Exhibition, Norrköping will, during the summer of 2014, attract many tourists. As a visitor, it may be difficult to locate appropriate parking spots in situations like these. Norrköpings Municipality currently has a map on their website with an overview of parking spots in the central areas of the city. This map, however, is only suited for viewing on big screens. To search for the map on a mobile device, find an appropriate parking and then correctly navigate to its location may serve difficult for a user who is new to the town or pressed for time. The purpose of this study is to create a user-friendly interface design for a mobile application that aims to facilitate the parking process for drivers who live in, or are visiting, Norrköping. The study uses a sequential mixed method approach and the design process is based on a goal-directed and user-centered design. Surveys, interviews and usability testing have been employed to collect research in order to create an interface that meets the needs of the user. The study resulted in the creation of an interface for a parking application that can be used for planning purposes as well as navigation. Choices for design and interactivity are based on the users' goals and preferences. The study concludes that a stressful situation requires information to be clear, easily understood and call for minimum effort from the user's side. Redundant information should be removed and the steps it takes to obtain information should be reduced. Different users have different attitudes towards the use of mobile applications for planning and parking. The majority of interviewees would in a similar situation rely on a Google search for information. From this we can conclude that the easiest solution would be for Norrköping's Municipality to create a mobile website with information about parking in the city. However, in order to reach a broader target group and to incorporate certain complex functions and features, the creation of an application becomes necessary.

Full textThis exam paper has been a collaboration between the writers and SYSteam Utvecklingspartner in Huskvarna. The assignment was about finding a need for a mobile application, making a requirement specification document with design documents and parallel to this constructing a prototype. The assignment is summarized in the following questions:
• How can companies in the forest industry benefit from mobile information technology?
• How can a user centered perspective be used in the process of making the requirement specification document and the design documents?
• How do guidelines for usability apply to a mobile application?
Three visits to companies in the forest industry were made to find a need for mobile information technology solutions. After a small analysis of the different companies’ problems and conditions the decision was to use Tenhults Impregneringsverk AB in the case study.
We used the FA/SIM method in our job of finding the organization needs for change and the principles of User Centered Design in the work of constructing a prototype.
The result of our work is a requirement specification with design documents and a prototype. The final prototype is an application deployed on to a PDA with a barcode scanner.
Our conclusion is that the purpose of mobile information technology often is about making the torrent of information more effective by reducing the duplication of work and securing the quality of the information.
Using a user centered perspective in the development work has in general terms worked out pretty well for us. Requirements and demands of the application have become clearer to us after each iteration, and in the end the customer and the developer organization where on the same terms.
We have been able to apply the guidelines of usability on MobSaw (is the name of the application prototype that was made during the exam work). The principles are universal; the biggest difference is about input and screen size because the hardware’s capacity is limited. The advantages of the smaller frameworks for mobile devices is that the focus on usability increases.

Projektet har utförts i samarbete med studenter från högskoleprogrammen programvaruteknik och informationsekonomi på Blekinge Tekniska Högskola. Vår uppgift som MDA-studenter har varit att kartlägga dagens arbetsprocess kring frånvarorapporteringen genom fältstudier på skolan samt ge ett förslag på det grafiska gränssnitt som sedan utvecklades av programvaruteknikerna. Uppsatsen behandlar även hur det är att samarbeta med studenter från andra högskoleprogram.

Full textThe availability and usage of study spaces in universities is important for students due to that majority of their study time is on their own. Study spaces provides a place for discussions and studies, which is important to achieve a good study environment. At the Mid Sweden University, a web-based booking service is available for students to reserve study rooms. In the current booking system, there exist no direct link to the booking service and there is no way to verify that a reservation that has been made is being used. Therefore, the objective of this study has been to examine and develop a mobile application for booking study rooms at Mid Sweden University that presents new functionalities and user interfaces to solve these problems. The study has been conducted with the aid of previous works, discussions with the IT architects, student surveys and user stories to capture requirement specifications. Thereafter a prototype was made based of said requirements, this prototype was then used as a blueprint when developing the actual mobile application. For testing the application, seven participants were chosen to test a set of functionalities and thereafter evaluate their experiences for further development. After the first test, a second test was done by comparing the time it took for participants to perform a set of tasks using the mobile interface versus the existing booking interface. The mobile interface was faster to perform tasks on and participants would like to use a mobile application for future reservations.

Full textDen här rapporten ämnar besvara frågan om hur man bör utforma ett användargränssnitt för en mobil applikation så att antalet knapptryckningar, speciellt textinmatning, på den mobila enheten minimeras. Med mobil applikation menas i detta fall ett program avsett att köras på en mobiltelefon med en numerisk knappuppsättning. Applikationen i fråga är en resesökningsfunktion ämnad för lokal busstrafik; för testsyften används hållplatser inom Jönköpings län.
Ett designkoncept utformades baserat på ett menysystem bestående av alfabetsgrupper för inmatning av namn på orter och hållplatser. Utifrån detta utvecklades en prototyp i Java Micro Edition som sedan kunde utvärderas och modifieras efter ett mindre användartest.
Prototypen testades på tre personer efter en metodik som utformats på mjukvaruföretaget Apple. Resultatet visade en allvarlig brist, som lyckligtvis är enkel att korrigera. Resterande problem ansågs ej utgöra några större hinder för framtida användare. Responsen från testpersonerna var positiv då de inte bara upplevde färre knapptryckningar utan också ett enklare användande jämfört med traditionell textinmatning.
This report aims to answer how to design a user interface for a mobile application minimizing the amount of key presses, specifically text input. In this context, mobile application means a program designed to run on a mobile phone with a numerical keyboard. The application we’re designing is a travel search function for local bus traffic. For out test purposes we used the bus stops in Jönköping County.
We developed a design concept based on a menu system consisting of alphabetic groups for inputting names of towns and bus stops. From this we developed a prototype in Java Micro Edition which could later be evaluated after a small user test.
The prototype was tested on three people using a method developed at the software company Apple. The results revealed one significant flaw, which, fortunately, is easy to correct. The remaining problems were not considered to be any insurmountable hurdles for users to overcome. Response from the test subjects was positive in that they not only experienced fewer key presses, but also a simpler usage of the application.

Full textThe web develops fast and web applications are getting more advanced. At the same time the mobile browsers develop at a rapid pace. However, it still differs a lot between a mobile browser and a standard web browser. You also interact with a mobile phone in a different way than what you do with a computer. This thesis examines whether it is possible to create advanced web applications that by utilizing the latest web technologies can replace ordinary mobile applications. The investigation is done by creating a lightweight version of a phone application, Mobile Documents on Symbian S60, which is an application that manages documents, emails and attachments. The development is done in Google Web Toolkit and technologies such as AJAX and Comet are both used. As the number of different types of phones with touch screens is very large the investigation only will target a small number of phones running web browsers as Mobile Safari, microB and Android Browser. The conclusions of this report is that the JavaScript support of today's browsers is enough to run advanced web applications. However, it differs a lot between browsers and the main problem is to create a functional user interface that works equally well on all phones and with all the different interaction possibilities that a mobile phone gives.

Full textNumera när de flesta är vana vid smartphones vill Volvo Group-koncernens IT-avdelning undersöka användningen av mobila enheter i produktion och utforma en applikation som kan användas i måleriprocessen vid fabriken i Umeå. När man lär sig ett nytt system, oavsett om det finns på en dator eller en mobil plattform, är det avgörande för användarnas prestation att utveckla systemet i enlighet med deras behov och önskemål. En faktor som kan leda till försämrad prestation är om användarna upplever en hög kognitiv belastning vid användandet av systemet. Den här uppsatsen undersöker därför vilka designval i en mobilapplikation som kan leda till minskad kognitiv belastning. Studien är en enfallsstudie där fem olika intervju-sessioner och ett test för att mäta kognitiv belastning har genomförts. Urvalet av deltagare i testet för att mäta kognitiv belastning bestod av 7 deltagare, varav 2 var kvinnor och resterande män. Deltagarna instruerades att utföra sju olika uppgifter på prototypen medan deras responstider mättes. Efter varje slutförd uppgift skulle deltagarna svara på en enkät som mätte mental ansträngning. När alla uppgifter var utförda skulle de svara på en enkät som undersökte den upplevda svårighetsgraden av varje uppgift. Alla testningar spelades in med hjälp av Microsoft Teams och analyserades kvalitativt. Resultaten visade att tre typer av designval som användes ledde till en låg nivå av kognitiv belastning; (1) användning av rätt typ av ikoner, (2) användning av färgkontrast och kanter och (3) bevarande av användarnas bekanta och tidigare arbetsupplevelser.
