Abstract:
AbstractThis study deals with the interpersonal meaning revealed the use of modality system in students’ hortatory exposition text at one of universities in Ciamis. Five texts of students’ hortatory exposition were analyzed to find out what types of modality are used and what interpersonal meaning which is contained through modality system. This study employed Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) based on Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2004) framework since it can seek and identify the level of language structured which makes kinds of meaning.The findings showed that all of clauses which contained modality system indicated author’s interpersonal meaning with different value of language in the texts. The different types of language value and polarity also indicated the author’s interpersonal meaning in the texts. In addition, this analysis concluded that five texts comparised several modalization and modulation types which appeared with different ranks. Keywords: Hortatory exposition text, interpersonal meaning, SFG, modality AbstrakPenelitian ini berkenaan dengan makna interpersonal yang terungkap dari penggunaan sistem modalitas dalam teks eksposisi hortatory mahasiswa di salah satu universitas di Ciamis. Lima teks eksposisi hortatory mahasiswa dianalisis untuk mengetahui apa jenis modalitas yang digunakan dan apa makna interpersonal yang terkandung melalui sistem modalitas. Penelitian ini menggunakan Grammar Fungsional Sistemik (SFG) berdasarkan kerangka Halliday dan Matthiessen (2004) karena kerangka tersebut dapat mengidentifikasi tingkat bahasa terstruktur yang membuat berbagai jenis makna. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa semua klausa yang berisi sistem modalitas mengandung makna interpersonal penulis dengan nilai bahasa dalam teks yang berbeda. Berbagai jenis nilai bahasa dan polaritas juga menunjukkan makna interpersonal penulis dalam teks. Selain itu, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa kelima teks memiliki beberapa tipe modalization dan modulasi yang muncul dengan peringkat yang berlainan.Kata kunci: Hortatory exposition text, makna interpersonal, modalitas, SFG,

Abstract:
I have argued elsewhere (Hengeveld, 1987b) that for a proper treatment of modality the clause model used in Functional Grammar (Dik, 1978, 1980) should be adapted in such a way that a number of different layers can be distinguished. My main argument there was that predications, used in Functional Grammar to represent linguistic expressions, have two different functions: a DESCRIPTIVE function and a CONTENT function. A predication not only gives a description of the external situation the speaker refers to within his speech act, it also represents the prepositional content or message unit processed within that speech act. Subjective and evidential modalities, which express a propositional attitude, should take a predication in its contentrepresenting function in their scope, whereas objective modalities, i.e. those modalities that are concerned with the actuality status of a State of Affairs (SoA), should take a predication in its SoA-designating function in their scope. A clause model should therefore be able to distinguish between these two functions of predications.

Abstract:
The study of phonological structure and patterns across languages is seen by contemporary phonologists as a way of gaining insight into language as a cognitive system. Traditionally, phonologists have focused on spoken languages. More recently, we have observed a growing interest in the grammatical system underlying signed languages of the deaf. This development in the field of phonology provides a natural laboratory for investigating language universals. As grammatical systems, in part, reflect the modality in which they are expressed, the comparison of spoken and signed languages permits us to separate those aspects of grammar which are modality-dependent from those which are shared by all human languages. On the other hand, modality-dependent characteristics must also be accounted for by a comprehensive theory of language. Comparing languages in two modalities is therefore of theoretical importance for both reasons: establishing modality-independent linguistic universals, and accounting for modality-dependent structure and organisation.

Abstract:
The article examines the place of Charles Ballyʼs paper «Syntaxe de la modalité explicite» in the body of work of the prominent Swiss linguist on the category of modality and identifies the role of his ideas in modern description of syntax. In Charles Ballyʼs linguistic heritage the concept of modality plays an exceptionally important role. His views o n the modal organization of the sentence are based on the theoretical perspective to describing the phenomenon of language proposed by his teacher Ferdinand de Saussure. Charles Ballyʼs theory of modality is an integral part of his general theory of enunciation. Identification of the two components in the semantic structure of the sentence, namely the modus and the dictum, becomes some kind of a bridge between Saussureʼs intellectualized grammar of language and the grammar of speech, which specifically entails the study of emotional and affective factors, and also stylistic aspects of human language. According to Charles Bally, the modus is a combination of a modal verb, which may contain a variety of shades of opinion, feeling or will, and a modal subject, which can represent a speaking subject and also other subjects. Charles Ballyʼs studies significantly influenced the interpretation of the category of modality in modern linguistics. However, not every theory based on the idea of identifying the modus and the dictum in the sentence can be theoretically convincing. Identifying the dictum with the representation of the objective, and the modus with the subjective led to unsubstantiated theoretical opposition of objective and subjective modality. Only misunderstanding of Charles Ballyʼs ideas might explain the attempts to attribute the ability to express the category of evaluation and emotionality to the modus. Charles Ballyʼs original theoretical views proved to be productive in the development of the cognitive theory of modality, which in its turn is based on other theoretical views on the phenomenon of language. Within this theory, modality is defined as a category that describes the mental-sensory differentiation of the speakerʼs thoughts in the process of sentence formation. According to the active approach to sentence interpretation, the subject of the modus in cognitive modality theory is only the speaker. The paper «Syntaxe de la modalité explicite», which Charles Bally described as a program of studies, has not lost its relevance. The task of describing the semantic shades of modality, as well as various forms of its expression, the principles of classification of modal verbs outlined in the paper as the goal of linguistics, remains largely unresolved today.

Abstract Descriptions of modal verbs in learner grammars often evoke quite abstract semantic categories (focusing on dynamic, deontic and epistemic modality) in generalized usage contexts. Yet, in concrete utterances, modal verbs not only serve highly specific pragmatic and discourse-structural functions, but can also be shown to occur in (quasi-)formulaic sequences with specific lexical elements. These more idiosyncratic functional and formal properties are often insufficiently addressed in learner grammars. The article demonstrates, on the basis of two case studies, how insights and methods from Construction Grammar can help to improve the presentation of this topic. More specifically, it elaborates on the key determinants of L2 construction learning (involving frequency, proto-typicality and form-function mapping, among others) and illustrates what statistical techniques such as collostructional analysis and conditional inference trees can reveal about the intricacies involved in learning modal verb constructions.

Four syntactic categories are found to express epistemic modality—preverbal auxiliaries, initial particles, adverbs and final particles. Epistemic modality can also be further classified; five categories are found to be distinctive in the system of Thai grammar—assumptive, speculative, deductive, dubitative and certainty.

Abstract:
The article deals with the grammar category of modality in the structure of modern Spanish. The author aims to analyze the structural organization of the grammar category of modality in the Spanish language and to reveal its cognitive bases in order to form a schematic representation of this category, which in the future will allow, first of all, to solve the problem of the number of moods in modern Spanish, and also to avoid some mistakes when translating sentences from Russian into Spanish, and from Spanish into Russian as well. The usage of a functionalsemantic approach helps to analyze in details the structure of the grammar category of modality in the language and to educe its conceptual bases. Within a framework of the study the author introduces the term “field of time”. The “field of time” refers to the mentality, while the grammar category of time - to a language. The correlation of these terms facilitates to visualize the connection of the way of thinking with a language and to separate three different moods in the Spanish language, that are el Indicativo, el Subjuntivo, el Imperativo.
