Ayanle, Hassan Shiekh-Ali. "Mode competition in cross-waves." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184872.

Full text
Abstract:
Cross-waves generated by an oscillating wavemaker in a rectangular wave tank are examined when two or more modes are simultaneously unstable. The partial differential equations governing the evolution of the complex amplitude of inviscid cross-waves are shown to be two coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations with transverse modulations. Energy dissipation in the system is taken into account by the inclusion of a linear viscous damping term into the amplitude equations. A linearized stability analysis is performed on these equations to determine the critical modes, the growth rates and the stab

Faraday waves arise on the surface of a liquid in a container that is undergoing vertical periodic oscillations. We investigate two-dimensional Faraday waves in a long rectangular container, both theoretically and experimentally. Hysteresis occurs when both finite amplitude solutions and the flat surface solution are available. We derive a nonlinear model of a standing wave, extending the Lagrangian method of Miles (1976). The model is used to investigate hysteresis. It is found necessary to retain cubic damping, cubic forcing and the fifth-order conservative term in order to achieve agreement

This study tested whether different modes of interaction led to differences in levels of this ‘objectivist’ thought. Logistics is increasingly becoming recognised as a source of competitive advantage, both in practice and in academia. The possible strategic impact of logistics makes it important to gain deeper insight into the role of logistics in the strategy of the firm. Firm's choice of the mode of organization is defined by his ability to acquire the information of worker's productivity. Also, firm fires the failed worker according to that information and the benefit and cost of rehiring a new worker from the market. Under certain conditions, an asymmetric equilibrium exists where some firms use outsourcing and the others use integration. The mixed mode in equilibrium exp

Nitride-based laser is an ideal light source because of its short wavelengths, high robustness and high speed. For the emerging applications in photonic chip, the low threshold pumping density and high speed are essential. Therefore, nitride-based microcavity or nanocavity are one of the topics with great research potential. In part one of this thesis, excitation area dependent photoluminescence and temperature dependent photoluminescence were conducted to expl

There are many tools to help students write codes easily. For example, MIT proposed Scratch for people without experience on coding. Google publishes AppInventor for everybody to design their application of mobile phone. To increase the interesting of learning, it is popular to design game to attract users. For example, PaGamO and EduCities are famous cases. The goal of these applications is not only

The refractive index of CLC molecules in cell change periodically that can be considered a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D PC). Owing to the selective reflection property of the photonic bandgap (PBG) in CLCs, circularly polarized incident light with the same handedness of the CLC helix is reflected, whereas the incident light with the opposite handedness is fully transmitted through the cel

To investigate these effects, the system of spatially independent carrier and photon rate equations is derived to examine the correlation between current density and mode distribution. A set of solutions for steady state is solved by the Newton’s method for nonlinear systems of equations under different initial conditions. The mode concept of oxide-confined VCSELs is also systematically studied. The disk-like contact is used throughout the calculatio
