Abstract:
The master thesis deals with ERP implementation projects, especially in context of post-implementation phase. It examines the impact of user behavior on the realized benefits of the newly established information system. Important point of the thesis is the acceptance of the system by users and their resistance to change. Significant causal relationships with the potential to influence successfull ERP implementation are described. By using system dynamics approach the model is created and simulations are then carried out. Subsequently, the results are presented and analyzed.

Abstract:
With a growing concern of an infectious diseases spreading in a population, epidemiology is becoming more important for the future of public health. In the past epidemiologist used existing data of an outbreak to help them determine how an infectious disease might spread in the future. Now with computational models, they able to analysis data produced by these models to help with prevention and intervention plans. This paper looks at the design, implementation, and analysis of a computational model based on the interactions of the population between individuals. The design of the working contact model looks closely at the SEIR model used as the foundation and the two timelines of a disease. The implementation of the contact model is reviewed while looking closely at data structures. The analysis of the experiments provide evidence this contact model can be used to help epidemiologist study the spread of an infectious disease based on the contact rate of individuals.

Forsman, Mikael. "A Model Implementation of Incremental Risk Charge." Thesis, KTH, Matematisk statistik, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-102752.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In 2009 the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision released the final guidelines for computing capital for the Incremental Risk Charge, which is a complement to the traditional Value at Risk intended to measure the migration risk and the default risk in the trading book. Before Basel III banks will have to develop their own Incremental Risk Charge model following these guidelines. The development of such a model that computes the capital charge for a portfolio of corporate bonds is described in this thesis. Essential input parameters like the credit ratings of the underlying issuers, credit spreads, recovery rates at default, liquidity horizons and correlations among the positions in the portfolio will be discussed. Also required in the model is the transition matrix with probabilities of migrating between different credit states, which is measured by historical data from Moody´s rating institute. Several sensitivity analyses and stress tests are then made by generating different scenarios and running them in the model and the results of these tests are compared to a base case. As it turns out, the default risk contributes for the most part of the Incremental Risk Charge.

Abstract:
There has been a considerable increase in the usage of paper products due to its sustainability in the product cycle. Many environmental and process variables can affect the mechanical behavior of paper from its making to finished products. Of these variables, moisture is of particular importance and strongly influences both papermaking, converting, and end-use of the paper products. Experimental investigations at different humidity levels reveals that normalized in-plane constitutive parameters, such as elastic parameters and the linear hardening modulus, in both MD and CD1) follow a linear relationship with normalized moisture ratio. This relation is found to be acceptable for a wide range of commercial paperboards. To capture this observation, a novel material model with orthotropic elasticity and anisotropic hardening2 is proposed. An associative flow rule for the evolution of plastic strain is proposed. The proposed flow rule is such that all stresses contribute to plastic flow rather than an effective stress. A simple version using anisotropic linear hardening is implemented. The mechanical properties, such as elastic parameters and hardening moduli are considered functions of the moisture ratio. An implicit variant of the material model is implemented in LS-DYNA®. The simulations with the proposed material model at different humidity levels follow the experimental results well for uniaxial loading, but discrepancies are obtained for simulation of biaxial loading tests. The moisture is assumed constant in the proposed model since the experiments are done in a moisture-controlled environment.<br>Användningen av pappersprodukter har ökat avsevärt på grund av dess hållbarhet i produktcykeln.

Abstract:
The latest developments of mobile devices include a variety of hardware features that allow for more rich data collection and services. Numerous sensors, Internet connectivity, low energy Bluetooth connectivity to other devices (e.g., smart watches, activity tracker, health data monitoring devices) are just some examples of hardware that helps to provide additional information that can be beneficially used for many application domains. Among others, they could be utilized in mobile learning scenarios (for data collection in science education, field trips), in mobile health scenarios (for health data collection and monitoring the health state of patients, changes in health conditions and/or detection of emergency situations), and in personalized recommender systems. This information captures the current context situation of the user that could help to make mobile applications more personalized and deliver a better user experience. Moreover, the context related information collected by the mobile device and the different applications can be enriched by using additional external information sources (e.g., Web Service APIs), which help to describe the user’s context situation in more details. The main challenge in context modeling is the lack of generalization at the core of the model, as most of the existing context models depend on particular application domains or scenarios. We tackle this challenge by conceptualizing and designing a rich generic context model. In this thesis, we present the state of the art of recent approaches used for context modeling and introduce a rich context model as an approach for modeling context in a domain-independent way. Additionally, we investigate whether context information can enhance existing mobile applications by making them sensible to the user’s current situation. We demonstrate the reusability and flexibility of the rich context model in a several case studies. The main contributions of this thesis are: (1) an overview of recent, existing research in context modeling for different application domains; (2) a theoretical foundation of the proposed approach for modeling context in a domain-independent way; (3) several case studies in different mobile application domains.

RAZZA, VALENTINO. "Nonlinear Model Predictive ControlFast Algorithms and Implementation." Doctoral thesis, Politecnico di Torino, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11583/2497475.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of an efficient implementation of a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm is addressed in this dissertation. The nominal problem formulation for the MPC control law involves the solution, for each sample time, to an optimization problem that is, in general, nonlinear and hard to be solved. The sample time must be greater than the time required to solve the optimization problem and, as a consequence, MPC cannot be directly applied to system with a fast dynamics. To overcome this problem, two possible approaches are proposed here: a set-membership (SM) based technique and a approximation of the optimization solver. The proposed SM based technique, substantially, allows to avoid solving the optimization problem on-line at each sample time. The control move is computed by means of a set of pre-computed solutions to the optimization problem for a given number of different system state values. This approach is potentially applicable to every kind of system, with the disadvantage to require a large amount of memory needed to store the data for the approximation. By focusing on the case of the linear MPC, other approximations can be used to obtain a fast implementation of a MPC controller with no pre-computed solutions. A modified interior-point algorithm which guarantee execution time in the order of a millisecond is described in this thesis. The effectiveness of the proposed techniques is shown through examples from real world applications. The examples were chosen from the set of such applications whose properties that prevent the applicability of the nominal predictive controller. The obtained simulations results shown the effectiveness of the proposed approximation techniques.

Abstract:
This field contains two branches, linear and nonlinear MOR, the linear MOR is a mature domain with well-established theory and numerical techniques. Meanwhile, nonlinear MOR domain is still stammering, and so far it didn’t show good and successful results in electrical circuit simulation. Some improvements however started to pop-up recently, and research is still going on this field because of the help that it can give to the contemporary simulators, especially with the growth of the electronic chips in terms of size and complexity due to industrial demands towards integrating systems on the same chip. A significant contribution in the MOR technique of HB solution has been proposed a decade ago by E. Gad and M. Nakhla. The technique has shown to provide a substantial system dimension reduction while preserving the precision of the output in steady state analysis. This MOR method uses the technique of projection via Krylov, and it preserves the passivity of the system. However, it suffers a number of important limitations in the construction of the pre-conditioner matrix which is ought to reduce the system. The main limitation is the necessity for explicit factorization as a power series of the equation of the nonlinear devices. This makes the technique difficult to apply in general purpose simulator conditions. This thesis will review the aspects of the nonlinear model order reduction technique for harmonic balance equations, and it will study solutions to overcome the above mentioned limitations, in particular using numerical differentiation approaches

Newman, K. J. "The current implementation status of the Boulder Model." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6976.

Abstract:
Since its inception just over 50 years ago, the Boulder Model has been the dominant training model in clinical psychology. The model has not been without its critics, however, and many commentators claim that it has not been implemented. Indeed, two alternative models of clinical training have emerged. However, many assertions about the Boulder Model's implementation failure are not well founded. This thesis was undertaken in an attempt to evaluate the current implementation status of the model that sought to define the essential character of the discipline of clinical psychology and ensure that the discipline would adapt to future changes in science, technology and society. In this thesis evidence pertaining to many of the Boulder Conference recommendations is critically reviewed. The evaluation of the implementation status of the Boulder Model presented in this thesis covers the following issues: the nature of the clinical graduates produced by the Boulder Model of training, practitioners' consumption and utilisation of research, indications of scientific behaviour among practitioners, clinical psychology's readiness to adapt to future changes in science, technology and society, and a critical appraisal of the nature of the clinical graduates produced by both the professional school and clinical scientist models. Critical attention is also given to the three philosophies of science most relevant for clinical psychology-empiricism, social constructionism and scientific realism-in an effort to clarify the critical role theories of science play in guiding both clinical science and clinical practice. The overall conclusion drawn in this thesis is that the Boulder Model has been implemented, albeit with two significant exceptions. Two possible future clinical training scenarios are depicted and the implications of these scenarios are critically explored. Based on the results of the thesis conclusions, some brief recommendations are made about how clinical psychology could strengthen its commitment to the spirit of the Boulder Model.

Abstract:
In recent years considerable attention has been diverted towards devising new strategies to deal with the competitive nature of manufacturing environments. Such strategies are often influenced by the costs and quality of the manufactured products. An effective tool management and control system can significantly contribute to the efficiency of manufacturing facilities by maintaining the flow of production, reducing manufacturing costs, and be instrumental to the quality of finished goods. Most companies however, have consistently overlooked the importance of tooling and its impact on the efficiency of their manufacturing facilities, consequently it has become a maior production bottleneck. Hence, the need for uncovering the nature, extent, and underlying causes of tooling problems. Having recognised the importance of a Computer Aided Tool Management And Control Systems (CATMACS) as a partial solution to the efficient management of tooling resources, the study then looks at the implementation of CATMACS in fourteen manufacturing companies in the UK, developing some 40 propositions. Based on the developed propositions, a framework for the implementation methodology is constructed. The framework consists of five phases; Tool audit, Strategy, Design, Action, and Review. The framework has been evaluated and the inputs and outputs to the phases have been identified. The framework represents a significant step in understanding of CATMACS implementation, in particular: <ul> <li>It addresses the need for such system.</li> <li>It provides the basis of an implementation toolkit.</li> <li>It provides guidance for the best way of implementing a CATMACS.</li> <li>It is constructed using hard data.</li> </ul>

Abstract:
Initially concentrated in information technology functions, it soon expanded to the telecommunications industry following the privatization of telephony operators in 1998. However, in spite of the major business that have been closed over the past 4 years, and the fact that their implementation continues to be considered a complex, high-risk operation, there are indicators pointing to a strong trend towards growth in this activity over the next few years in Brazil. The insertion of outsourcing in a strategic context in which it is treated as a kind of strategic alliance would therefore seek not only better results concerning its implementation, but also the construction of sustainable competitive edges for both of the parties concerned. The main purposes of this thesis was to develop an analytical framework that can help companies operating in Brazil effectively outsource critical functions. Therefore, the research started from the development of its theoretical basis, which sought to address the definition of the outsourcing concept, the implications of its implementation, and its categorization as a kind of strategic alliance. Upon introduction of the theoretical basis, an outsourcing typology was proposed which, together with the selected research methods, served as a basis for the subsequent stages of the thesis. In conclusion, a framework was proposed in a step-by-step structure to assist in the outsourcing of critical functions, inserting it into a strategic context so as to allow sustainable competitive edges to be sought. A new study case was presented, this time for the purpose to preliminarily evaluate the possibility of using the framework in an actual outsourcing case within a strategic context. The results obtained from this evolution and supported by the activities that were previously conducted allowed this thesis to contribute to both the academic area and the managerial practice, treating outsourcing firstly as a means to form strategic alliances, and providing the managerial practice with a framework to guide its implementation in such a manner as to get better results and seek to develop sustainable competitive edges.

Parker, David Anthony. "Implementation of symbolic model checking for probabilistic systems." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2003. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/229/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, we present efficient implementation techniques for probabilistic model checking, a method which can be used to analyse probabilistic systems such as randomised distributed algorithms, fault-tolerant processes and communication networks. A probabilistic model checker inputs a probabilistic model and a specification, such as "the message will be delivered with probability 1", "the probability of shutdown occurring is at most 0.02" or "the probability of a leader being elected within 5 rounds is at least 0.98", and can automatically verify if the specification is true in the model. Motivated by the success of symbolic approaches to non-probabilistic model checking, which are based on a data structure called binary decision diagrams (BDDs), we present an extension to the probabilistic case, using multi-terminal binary decision diagrams (MTBDDs). We demonstrate that MTBDDs can be used to perform probabilistic analysis of large, structured models with more than 7.5 billion states, way out of the reach of conventional, explicit techniques, based on sparse matrices. We also propose a novel, hybrid approach, combining features of both symbolic and explicit implementations and show, using results from a wide range of case studies, that this technique can almost match the speed of sparse matrix based implementations, but uses significantly less memory. This increases, by approximately an order of magnitude, the size of model which can be handled on a typical workstation.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since the advent of democracy in 1994, domestic and international expectations have steadily grown regarding the role of a new South African as a responsible and respected member of the international community. These expectations have included the hope that South Africa will playa leading role in a variety of international, regional and sub-regional forums and that the country will become an active participant in attempts to resolve various regional and international conflicts. The nature of international activities aimed at international conflict prevention, management and resolution has changed dramatically over the past decade. A radically post-Cold War security environment has seen the transformation of classical peacekeeping operations into complex, multi-dimensional conflict management activities with a political focus in which the military is but one of many participants. Whilst South Africa has, as a member of bodies such as the United Nations, the Organisation of African Unity, the African Union and the Southern African Development Community, begun to play an active role in diplomatic resolution initiatives, the country is also expected to contribute to wider multi-national peace missions. Contemporary peace missions are fundamentally political initiatives, despite the complex mixture of political, humanitarian and military concerns and means. South Africa must therefore make a careful appraisal of the political and strategic environment within which peace missions are to be launched and the principles governing South African participation in such efforts. A clear understanding is required of the type of mandate, which governs peace missions in order to facilitate a detailed articulation of acceptable entry and exit criteria and to determine the scope, level and type of resources that South Africa is willing to commit to future peace missions. This will provide a clear indication to the international community and the regional and sub-regional partners of South Africa's stance on participation in peace operations. South Africa has limited but valuable resources to offer the international community for the conduct of peace missions. These include civilians with a diverse range of skills and experience appropriate to peace processes, professional and experienced police officers and well trained and disciplined military capacity. If these resources are to be utilised by the international community in the cause of peace, their approximate nature and size must be defined through an appropriate readiness system for each component. On the other hand, a number of key conditions must be met before these potential resources are deployed in support of a particular peace mission. Some of the responsibility for meeting these conditions lies at the level of the international community - such as the formulation of a clear and realistic mandate. On the other hand, it is a national obligation to support and budget for such participation. After an assessment of the South African National Defence Force, operation BOLEAS in Lesotho, a clearly articulated Aide de Memoire is recommended as a model for Peace Support Operations, which will cover all aspects in relation to South African National Defence (SANDF) participation in peace initiatives. This Aide De Memoire aim to set conditions that should be met before any peacekeeping operation can be implemented. It will provide clarity on matters relating to the scope of South African peace missions; the question of mandates, joint task organisation and legal responsibilities.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Sedert die aanvang van demokrasie in 1994 was daar 'n stelselmatige groei in eie en internasionale verwagtinge oor die rol van 'n nuwe Suid-Afrika as verantwoordelike en gerespekteerde lid van die internasionale gemeenskap.

Bogner, Matthew Preston. "Nursing staff members' reactions to household model implementation." Thesis, Central Michigan University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10132103.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> Traditional nursing homes are based on a model that can limit a resident&rsquo;s ability to make basic choices, minimize opportunities to direct their own lives, and ultimately destroy the human spirit. As an alternative to the traditional model, the household model is an arrangement in which small groups of residents direct their daily lives in a shared home setting (a household), supported by a decentralized self-led service team of frontline professionals empowered to be responsive to the residents&rsquo; needs. While many frontline nursing staff members are advocates of the need for change, it is also common for them to react negatively toward the process of household model implementation. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine nurse aides&rsquo; and licensed nurses&rsquo; reactions to household model implementation. Sixteen semi-structured interviews were transcribed verbatim, divided into 524 units of meaning, and coded using concepts of Oreg, Vakola, and Armenakis&rsquo; (2011) theoretical model, derived from 60 years of qualitative studies on change recipients&rsquo; reactions to organizational change. In this model, employee reactions are a function of antecedents, categorized as pre-change (individual characteristics and internal context) and change antecedents (change process, perceived benefit/harm, and change content). Antecedents influence affective, cognitive, and behavioral reactions to change and, subsequently, lead to change consequences, including work-related and personal consequences. Two trained independent coders reviewed transcripts and achieved 70% agreement. Explicit reactions accounted for 48% of comments, followed by antecedents (27%) and change consequences (25%). Most common antecedents were related to change process (71%), perceived benefit/harm (24%), and change recipient characteristics (4%). Study participants reported difficulties with cross training, initial experiences of hardship and fear, confusion over the new model, and perceptions that it would be harmful to staff members and residents. Although experiences improved over time, some staff members, who self-identified as positive individuals, still reported perceived harm and engaged in resistant behaviors. Explicit reactions to change were behavioral (41%), cognitive (33%), and affective (26%). Most staff members supported household model implementation through their actions. They communicated with each other to learn and to cope with change. While three staff members actively resisted changes, they still supported at least some aspects of the household model. Cognitive and affective reactions were mixed, ranging from excitement and happiness to fear, nervousness, and frustration. Core household model components were received as positive, especially for residents. Concerns regarding work accounted for 94% of all reported organizational change consequences and included insufficient household staffing, harder working conditions, insufficient time to get everything done (or to do it well), and widespread feelings of isolation. The theoretical model for analyzing organizational change proved to be useful in understanding nursing staff members&rsquo; reactions to household model implementation and for identifying proactive steps to manage this change. Ongoing education is recommended to ensure staff members follow through with changes over time and to reduce confusion and perceptions of harm. The household model may need to be staffed at a higher level, at least initially, to maintain the same quality of care as in the traditional care delivery model. Ongoing team training within each household can serve to improve operations and balance responsibilities of blended roles. Due to the decentralized environments, potential feelings of isolation among residents and staff members are anticipated, which can be alleviated through regular multi-household gatherings.</p>

Abstract:
The European process industry is in need of modernization if it shall retain its competitiveness on the growing global market and at the same time reduce the environmental impact that the industrial activities have. The concept behind industrial automation has been very successful in increasing the efficiency for the material handling process, but some industries still have a lack in the field of automation. One of these industries is the mining industry. ABB is currently working within the EU-funded project DISIRE in order to increase the amount of traceability and therefore also the potential of automation in the mining industry by introducing a flow simulation over the mine infrastructure. But one of the largest inherited problems that this industry has over other process industries is that the flow partly consists of a batch structure where the continuous flows of the product only takes place between bunkers and buffer zones. ABB has developed a Matlab simulation where these bunkers are modelled by a simple queue algorithm which does not take the blending or time delays of the ore into account. The main task of this master thesis was to investigate which different modelling approaches that could increase the accuracy of the simulation. The Cellular Automata (CA) were found to be most suitable modelling approach due to its simplicity and a Matlab toolbox were developed and implemented based on the theories behind CA. The results were partly evaluated with the results of an ongoing experiment at Luleå university and by comparison to theories of granular media movement. The CPU-time for the silo flow with 10.000 particles in a flat silo using a MacBook Pro 2.26GHz was about 8 seconds.

Abstract:
The Community Earth System Model (CESM) is a coupling of five different models which are combined to simulate the dynamic interactions between and within the Earth's atmosphere, ocean, land, land-ice, and sea-ice. In this work, the installation and testing of CESM on Portland State University's Cluster for Climate Change and Aerosol Research (CsAR) is described and documented, and two research applications of the model are performed. First, the improved treatment of cloud microphysics within recent versions of CESM's atmospheric module is applied to an examination of changes in shortwave cloud forcing (SWCF) and results are compared to output from older versions of the model. Second, the CESM model is applied to an examination of the effect that increased methane (CH4) concentrations have had on the catalytic destruction of stratospheric ozone (O3) by ozone depleting compounds (ODCs) such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrous oxide (N2O).

Abstract:
In this thesis we present a solution for the Localization and Tracking of non cooperative moving targets in an indoor environment using a WSN. The design, model, and fabrication of devices based on directional antennas and electronically steerable antennas are presented. The emphasis of the study is based on the idea to develop a low cost system that can localize and track people in an indoor environment like old homes, hospitals, etc. due to the multipath no other sensors can be used as effectively as RF sensors. The narrow band sensors utilizing Received Signal Strength (RSS) based measurements were designed, modeled and fabricated. The designed electronically steerable antenna is also capable of exploiting the Time of Arrival (ToA) and Angle of Arrival (AoA) based measurements to improve the overall performance of the system. As in indoor environments the deployment of the sensor nodes is critical, the proposed electronically steerable antenna in ISM 2.4 GHz band is capable of giving better performance even with reduced number of sensors deployed. The model is simulated in CST MWS and the hardware is fabricated.

Abstract:
The work presented in this document is part of the project AutoFocus: Adaptive Self-Improving Multi-Agent Systems' that is being developed at the research unit LabMAg, which objective is the implementation of multi-agent systems based on autonomous entities capable of self-optimized and adaptive behaviors. The notion of autonomic computation, like other notions that also imply pro-active computation, is based on autonomous entities that actively work to achieve their objectives and have the ability to dynamically adjust to changes in their environment, constrained by time and resource limits. In the approach used by the AutoFocus project, that adaptation to change and the regulation of the agent's capabilities, result from the combination of cognitive aspects with emotional based aspects. The agent model defined and used by the AutoFocus project is the Agent Flow Model. The task that corresponded to the work presented in this document was to develop a platform for the Agent Flow Model. It was intended, with this platform, to provide a tool that enables the rapid deployment and monitoring of agents based on this model. The developed work consisted in the analysis and design, oriented to objects, implementation and testing of components of this platform

Abstract:
In the Master Thesis research is carried out into the influence of national culture on the implementation of knowledge management (KM) systems, as well as providing the actions which should be carried out for successful implementation. Research was conducted in the Ukraine and the Czech Republic. The Master thesis starts with an explanation of the problem area, a review of the main definitions necessary for understanding the studied field: foundation of national culture and knowledge management are reviewed. Relevance of the topic is explained by the fact that usually more attention is paid to knowledge sharing than its creation, and if we ignore the fact of national culture, the used theories may lead to a collapse of the system of knowledge management, as they should be modified from country to country. Theoretical framework contains a literature review with information about the concept of knowledge and how to create it within an organization, properties of the knowledge base from which stems knowledge management system and its development. Aspects of national culture and organizational models are also described. Typology of culture proposed by Geert Hofstede, is presented, which is taken as a basis for conducting the research. Individualism and Collectivism dimension from his typology are descried in detail. Because of widespread criticism of Hofstede’s work, the main arguments “against” it were provided. Typologies of such researchers as Triandis, Kim, Kagitcibasi and Berry were reviewed to explain why they are not applicable to this study. Soft System Methodology, rich picture, is used to describe the process of implementing Knowledge Management Systems, as well as the processes required for solving problems and eliminating the identified barriers. Through Kotter's 8-Step Change Model reflected actions for implementing of Knowledge Management System and they are showing in rich picture what in addition with concomitant actions creates complete model for KM system implementation. As a philosophical worldview of the research, Social Constructivism was selected. For data collection, it was decided to create a survey which gave qualitative and quantitative data. Steps of survey creation and how it was delivered to respondents are explained, as well as data analysis and sampling methods. Paper provides practical application of gained knowledge. It explains identified barriers to the implementation of KM system, comparison of Ukrainian and Czech Republic companies in the context of KM, as well as KM on a national level. Described in detail is the creation of rich pictures which reflects the model of implementing KM System. While conducting the research it was proved that national culture affects the style of doing business and the process of implementing a knowledge management system in particular. In order to go deeper into the details of the differences that can exist between countries, the discussion talks about features of the national cultures in Europe, where research has been conducted, and Asia, as Chinese culture is one of the most influential countries. In conclusion, different levels of individualism are found in the studied countries. According to the results of the study and received data, it is safe to say that the question of the influence of national culture on the process of implementing a KM System exists and plays an important role. Opportunities for further research are given.

Martin, Ramaldo S. "Implementation and validation of a computational model of the feline forelimb." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50293.

Abstract:
Postural control incorporates multiple neural and mechanical systems at various levels of the motor control system, yet the question of how all these systems interact remains unanswered. This dissertation describes development of a biologically based, three-dimensional mathematical model of the forelimb of the domestic cat that integrates skeletal anatomy, muscular architecture, and neural control. Previous work has shown that muscle architecture profoundly affects its function. However, even though the forelimbs of quadrupeds contribute to posture and locomotion differently from hindlimbs, most models of quadruped motion are based upon hindlimb mechanics. The proposed work consists of three main steps: (1) architectural and anatomical characterization, which involves acquisition of muscle attachment data, measurement of whole muscle and muscle fiber properties, and estimation of limb kinematic parameters; (2) model development and implementation, wherein the data will be integrated into a mathematical model using special-purpose software; and (3) model validation, including verification of model estimates against experimentally obtained measurements of muscle moment arms, and prediction of limb kinetics, namely end-point forces arising from perturbations to the limb. It was found that the forelimb does indeed possess structure, particularly at the shoulder and antebrachium, that allows for more diverse movements. The neural wiring in these regions is more complex than in the hindlimb, and there exists substantial muscular structure in place for non-sagittal motion and object suppression and retrieval. Other results showed that the kinematics of the limb alone produce a restorative response to postural disturbance but that the magnitude is reduced, indicating that neural input acts as a modulatory influence on top of the intrinsic mechanism of limb architecture. Furthermore the model demonstrated many of the essential features found in the experiments. This study represents the implementation of the first forelimb model of the cat incorporating mechanical properties and serves as a key component of a full quadruped model to explore posture and locomotion.

Chen, Xi Computer Science &amp Engineering Faculty of Engineering UNSW. "Toward a CMMI specific practice implementation planning reference model." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. Computer Science & Engineering, 2008. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/42595.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past two decades, software engineering researchers and practitioners have developed, studied, and used standards and models for software process improvement and assessment. CMMI ("Capability Maturity Model Integration") is a widely known software process maturity model that describes the practices that should be performed by mature organizations. However, there is also no clear mapping between process improvement and business goals, and few authors provide guidance on how to implement the CMMI Specific Practices (SPs) within a Process Area or Maturity Level. This thesis proposes an SP implementation reference model that maps inter-dependent SPs to particular improvement outcomes. The CMMI specification is interpreted using qualitative textual analysis to develop schemes to frame CMMI SPs from the perspectives of outcomes, activities, and work products. The first scheme is an SP classification model, defined by four outcome areas (organization, process, project and product) and four activity groups (plan, do, check and improve). The SPs in Maturity Level 2 are assigned to one or more of sixteen outcome/activity categories and are analyzed in terms of those categories. The second scheme is an SP dependencies model, created by identifying work products used and produced by SPs, and by graphically visualizing their relationships. The SPs in Maturity Level 2 are analysed using the scheme to provide a reference model of their order of implementation, given the identified relationships. The third scheme is a goal-directed SP implementation planning reference model constructed by combining the two earlier schemes. This scheme uses an algorithm to search for all the dependency precedents of SPs in a given outcome/activity category. Conditions are also defined to reduce some of the dependencies. The output shows the SPs required to achieve the goal that the given category represents, and shows the order of implementation for those SPs, respecting the dependency constraints. This model is intended to guide practitioners in prioritizing and sequencing the implementation of SPs. The three schemes contribute to the CMMI research community by increasing understanding about what can be improved by CMMI SPs, with reference to the outcomes of implementing SPs, and about how software processes can be improved using CMMI, with reference to the implementation order of SPs. They also contribute an analytical approach to interpret the practices in SPI specifications. The SP classification model is used to reinterpret previous research to show that SMEs tend to focus on planning and doing project-related and product-related practices, but not on checking or improving project-related or product-related practices. When planning and developing products, SMEs try to ensure that the project progresses as planned to meet the deadline. However, practices that support this are lacking within CMMI, especially for estimation, evaluation, verification, and validation. The thesis also contributes to the CMMI community by identifying points of ambiguity, inconsistency and incompleteness in the CMMI standard.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the factors that influence rapid prototyping innovation implementation. Research was conducted to develop a qualitative, descriptive model of factors influencing user acceptance and organization implementation. The model reflected a review of the literature on innovation acceptance, implementation of change, human factors in technology transfer, and organizational development; a review of related Navy-specific findings and the elements of rapid prototyping; a case study of International Research Institute's Joint Operational Tactical System evolution as a real world example; and interviews and correspondence with personnel representing "players" in the development and utilization process. This model is useful in structuring thinking about the problems of innovation implementation, identifying areas where future research on the acceptance process may have the greatest impact, and may be extended to provide direction for timely integration of future innovative efforts through rapid prototyping

McVicar, J. Scott G. "A generic tilt-rotor simulation model with parallel implementation." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1993. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4952/.

Full text
Abstract:
The unique capabilities of the tilt-rotor configuration are generally accepted to provide significant potential when applied to numerous civil and military operations. A vital stage in the development of any tilt-rotor design is the simulation of its basic flying qualities which are essentially defined by the vehicle's response to a range of control inputs and the trim states it adopts. In order to carry out this simulation satisfactorily, an accurate generic mathematical model is required, however, the author is unaware of any existing tilt-rotor simulations which utilise the latest modelling techniques. A generic tilt-rotor simulation model (GTILT) which includes individual blade modelling to describe the behaviour of the rotor has been developed during this research. One of the most significant attributes of individual blade models is that they portray the oscillatory nature of the forces and moments produced by a lifting rotor. The resulting trimmed flight path of the vehicle is periodic rather than steady in nature and consequently existing trimming algorithms, formulated for use with rotor disc representations, are inappropriate when applied to individual blade simulations. A specialised trimming algorithm capable of rapidly trimming rotorcraft simulations to a specified periodic trim state has been developed and incorporated into the GTILT model. Individual blade modelling provides a higher level of fidelity than is possible when using a rotor disc representation but this benefit is obtained at the expense of computational burden. Hence, most sequential computing facilities are unable to provide the performance necessary to make such models practical. In order to reduce computational run-times to an acceptable level GTILT has been parallelised and implemented on a custom designed transputer network. GTILT has been configured using XV-IS data in order to investigate the fidelity of its predicted trim states and vehicle response to a range of control inputs. During the course of this investigation, the trim algorithm is shown to be robust and capable of producing rapid convergence to a wide range of trim states. Longitudinal trims predicted by GTILT are verified against those of the similarly configured Bell C81 for a range of nacelle incidences and good correlation obtained in all cases. A qualitative verification of the trim states adopted in turning flight reveals no anomalies and the results obtained are very encouraging. The dynamic response of the vehicle is demonstrated to be qualitatively valid when a range of control inputs are applied at various nacelle incidences with the behaviour of the vehicle being explicable in all cases.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this thesis is to develop an implementation model to an Andon system, which makes the implementation efficient and effective on a vehicle manufacturing assembly line. In order to conduct this, the purpose was broken down to three research questions.  1. How can the Andon system at an assembly line be designed?  2. What are the contemporary models for implementing systems?  3. How can an efficient and effective implementation model for an Andon system be designed? Method – To find an answer to the first research question four case studies with interviews and observations have been made. A literature study was also conducted in order to understand the subject. The following question was answered from literature studies and collected empirical data.  Findings – Through case studies, empirical qualitative data about the Andon implementation were collected. This was later analysed by the authors by dividing the collected data into three parts. The first part is about how an Andon system can be designed using different layouts and how to decide a particular layout considering the different possibilities. The second part is how the implementation model PDCA can be used as a base of the implementation project for the implementation team. Finally, the last part describes the whole model and how to start and finish it.   Limitations – The case companies that were chosen are only those who already have done the Andon implementation on their assembly line. In order to see alternative solutions to otherwise similar problems, authors have chosen to study vehicle manufacturers as well as manufacturers outside of the vehicles branch. Only the implementations phase is in focus to investigate. Further more the thesis will however not include any economic aspects or any aspects regarding software. Further Research – During the study of research question one, six different layout features were highlighted. From the authors’ knowledge, these six layout features are the most essential features to consider designing an Andon system. However, it is important to state that this study do not mention all of the affecting features to design an Andon system. Further research on other features in an Andon System is therefore recommended. Secondly, as the authors are relying on the interviewed person’s feedback of the differences in the output of an Andon system, the authors recommend self- observations in order to raise the validation of the result.

Jardine, James. "An examination and implementation of the libor market model." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/6402.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.<br>The relatively young field of quantitative finance has grown over the past thirty years with the cherry-picking of a wide variety of techniques from the disciplines of finance, mathematics and computer science. The Libor Market Model, a model for pricing and risk-managing interest rate derivatives, is a prime example of this cherry-picking, requiring an understanding of the interest rate markets to understand the problem to be modelled, requiring some deep mathematics from probability theory and stochastic calculus to build the model, and requiring a level of computer expertise to efficiently implement the computationally demanding requirments of the model. This dissertation intends to draw from a wide literature to bring into one body of work a treatment of the Libor Market Model from start to finish.

Maze, Sheldon. "Efficient implementation of the Heston-Hull & White model." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8521.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.<br>A model with a stochastic interest rate process correlated to a stochastic volatility process is needed to accurately price long- dated contingent claims. Such a model should also price claims efficiently in order to allow for fast calibration. This dissertation explores the approximations for the characteristic function of the Heston-Hull&White model introduced by Grzelak and Oost- erlee (2011). Fourier-Cosine expansion pricing, due to Fang and Oosterlee (2008), is then used to price contingent claims under this model, which is implemented in MATLAB. We find that the model is efficient, accurate and has a relatively simple calibration procedure. In back-tests, it is determined that the Heston- Hull&White model produces better hedging profit and loss results than a Heston (1993) or a Black and Scholes (1973) model.

Abstract:
Querying non-conventional data is recognized as a major issue in new environments and applications such as those occurring in pervasive computing. A key issue is the ability to query data, streams and services in a declarative way in order to make the development of pervasive applications easier. In this thesis, we define a data-centric view of pervasive environments: the classical notion of database is extended to come up with a broader notion, the relational pervasive environment. We then define the so-called Serena algebra that enables the expression of one-shot or continuous queries homogeneously handling data, streams and services. A prototype of Pervasive Environment Management System has been implemented and experiments have been conducted in order to validate our approach<br>Interroger des sources de données non-conventionnelles est reconnu comme une problématique majeure dans les nouveaux environnements comme ceux de l'informatique pervasive.

Liu, Ying. "Multicriterion Market Segmentation: A Unified Model, Implementation and Evaluation." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/193867.

Full text
Abstract:
Market segmentation is a multicriterion problem. This dissertation addresses the multicriterion nature of market segmentation with a new unified segmentation model that is derived from multiobjective conceptual framework. The unified model elegantly solves the intrinsic antagonistic problem of market segmentation by generating a set of Pareto optimal solutions that represents different tradeoffs among multiple conflicting objectives. This dissertation develops an innovative implementation named Multicriterion Market Segmentation using Evolutionary Algorithm (MMSEA). Based on multiobjective evolutionary algorithms, MMSEA overcomes many limitations and disadvantages of existing methods by optimizing multiple objectives simultaneously, searching for globally optimal solutions and generating a set of Pareto optimal solutions. It also suggests the interesting solutions based on the geometric characteristics of Pareto front. The method was applied to customer value and benefit segmentation for the cell phone service market (a descriptive segmentation model) and customer response segmentation for a national retailer (two predictive segmentation models). The empirical evaluation shows that the proposed unified market segmentation model and solution techniques provide the decision makers with many insights and enhanced flexibility that are missing in existing market segmentation methods.

Fouche, Pierre. "A competitive intelligence implementation model." Diss., 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1095.

Abstract:
Today companies are competing on the basis of what they know, how fast they learn it, and how well they use what they learn. At the heart of this knowledge-based competition lie knowledge and even more important intelligence. Competitive Intelligence, as a discipline, is increasingly being viewed as a critical enabler to reach competitive advantage. Previous research, however, suggest that South African com¬panies showed a general lack of appropriate pro¬cesses or structures for competitive intelligence compared to their international counterparts. The research aims to demonstrate, through a case study, how the theoretical concepts associated with competitive intelligence can be translated into practice so as to ensure efficient and cost effective competitive intelligence practices and thus contribute to the future success of competitive intelligence programmes in South Africa.<br>Information Science<br>M. Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>資訊管理學研究所<br>107<br>Modeling volatility becomes crucial in financial applications ranging from risk management, asset allocation to option pricing. Stochastic volatility (SV) models are one of the volatility models that treat the variances as an unobserved component following a stochastic process. In this paper, we focus on the discrete time stochastic volatility (SV) models. We provide an R package, logsv, which implements the basic log SV model with the estimation of the Markov chain Monte Carlo approach and disclose all the implementation details. We fit the model to simulated datasets and real world datasets to test the fitness and correctness of our implementation. The experiment results with all datasets show that the estimation procedure works well on both parameter and volatility estimation. With the estimation results of the basic log SV model, we discuss some period of high volatility and highlight the financial crises and events that are potentially related.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>電機工程學系研究所<br>106<br>In software engineering, data model is an abstract modeltoexpress data organization andassociate the relationship among data. It is also used to express the attributes of things and relationships in the real world. It shows the structure and access of all data. Since data composition itself is an abstract concept, data models can be used to support realization into program data structure. Our research team designed a data model transformation method based on model-driven architecture.Programmers canwrite high-level data model description and give data structure transformation decisions. They can beconverted to physical data model, and then be generated into real codesof selected program language.Programmers can also use a pattern language towrite high-level data access description. The method can be used to transform the data access model into physical model and real code according the transformed result. In this research, the design method was implemented in software. We also carried out experiments, given various decision of data structure transformation. It can generate correct codes of physical data structure and data access to verify the correctness of the implemented software of this thesis research.
