Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractIn this paper we propose the design of a new control strategy for dynamic systems based on human emotions. Since psychologists and neuroscientists have demonstrated that emotions are indispensable in the Decision-Making-Process, and decision-making is the work of every controller, it is our desire to emulate emotions in the systems design. Here we deal with four areas of application for this invention in which autonomy and adaptability are essential. As well, eight emotion computational models are referenced. Given that these involve cognition, it is concluded as necessary to make adjustments to include one of these in a control strategy. For this reason, this article formulates the use of the Circumplex Model of Affect, a model which labels a human emotion as a variable. Keywords: Human Emotion Models, Decision-Making Processes, Circumplex Model of Affect, Autonomous Control.

Abstract:

Summary: Participants (n = 168) rated acquaintances' personality using the NEO Personality Inventory - Revised (NEO-PI-R; Peer Rating Form) and the Impact Message Inventory (IMI) to examine the relationship between the interpersonal circumplex and Big Five models of personality. Results support the predicted finding that the NEO scales of Extraversion and Agreeableness load most strongly on the circumplex regions of Friendly-Dominance and Friendly-Submissiveness, respectively. Unexpectedly, the NEO domains of Neuroticism, Conscientiousness and Openness (to a lesser extent) also show projections onto circular structure.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Family Satisfaction Scale (Olson, 2010). Family satisfaction has been evaluated by clinicians and researchers, particularly in relation to the Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems. Despite its widespread use, there are few adaptations to Spanish. Based on the translation process and preliminary reliability data, an instrumental study was conducted with a sample of 385 families from the general population, with the aim of obtaining evidence supporting the validity and reliability of the scale. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis show a good adjustment of the data to a one-dimensional structure, with a high reliability index. The external validity analyzes were performed with the rest of the FACES IV scales, with expected results according to the theoretical model. To obtain criterion validity data, we compared the results obtained in a clinical sample (N = 77) with an equivalent subsample of the participants, finding significant differences between the two groups. It is concluded that the Family Satisfaction Scale is a valid and reliable technique for the assessment of satisfaction in Uruguayan families.

Abstract:
PurposeHomicide is the most severe form of crime and one that imposes the greatest societal costs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the homicide circumplex, a set of traits, behaviors, psychological and psychiatric features that are associated with greater homicidal ideation, homicidal social cognitive biases, homicide offending and victimization, and psychopathology that is facilitative of homicide.Design/methodology/approachUsing the data from a near population of federal supervised release offenders from the Midwestern USA, ANOVA, multinomial logistic, Poisson and negative binomial regression models were developed.FindingsGreater homicidal ideation is associated with homicide offending, attempted homicide offending and attempted homicide victimization and predicted by gang activity, alias usage, antisocial personality disorder and intermittent explosive disorder. These behavioral disorders, more extensive criminal careers, African American status and gang activity also exhibited significant associations with dimensions of the homicide circumplex.Originality/valueDeveloping behavioral profiles of offenders that exhibit homicidal ideation and behaviors are critical for identifying clients at greatest risk for lethal violence. The homicide circumplex is an innovation toward the goal that requires additional empirical validation.

Abstract:
Abstract. Circular data is different from linear data and its analysis also requires methods different from conventional methods. In this study a Bayesian embedding approach to estimating circular regression models is investigated, by means of simulation studies, in terms of performance, efficiency, and flexibility. A new Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling method is proposed and contrasted to an existing method. An empirical example of a regression model predicting teachers’ scores on the interpersonal circumplex will be used throughout. Performance and efficiency are better for the newly proposed sampler and reasonable to good in most situations. Furthermore, the method in general is deemed very flexible. Additional research should be done that provides an overview of what circular data looks like in practice, investigates the interpretation of the circular effects and examines how we might conduct a way of hypothesis testing or model checking for the embedding approach.

The recent history of personality psychology is rapidly reviewed with the aim of indicating significant cues of the progress which has taken place and of the problems which are still pending. In this regard, a three‐stage model of progress provides the arguments which introduce personality psychology into the domain of ‘complexity’. Readmission of individual differences in the investigation of basic processes, attention to marginal perturbances in between non‐significant deviations, and use of circumplex models to make sense of multiple facets of phenomena are indicated as viable avenues to the complexity of personality psychology.

Abstract:
Circumplex models have organized interpersonal behavior along 2 orthogonal dimensions-communion (which emphasizes connection between people) and agency (which emphasizes one person's influence over the other). However, many empirical studies have disconfirmed certain predictions from these models. We therefore revised the model in 4 ways that highlight interpersonal motives. In our revision: (a) the negative pole of communion is indifference, not hostility; (b) a given behavior invites (not evokes) a desired reaction from the partner; (c) the complement of a behavior is a reaction that would satisfy the motive behind that behavior; (d) noncomplementary reactions induce negative affect. If the motive is unclear, the meaning of the behavior is ambiguous. This ambiguity helps explain failures in social support, miscommunications in everyday life, and features of most personality disorders. The model emphasizes measurable individual differences: Reactions that are complementary for one person need not be complementary for another.

Abstract:
Over the past two decades psychological models of affect have changed from valence (one-dimensional) models to multiple-dimensional models. The most recent models, circumplex models, are two-dimensional. Feeling thermometer measures, which derive their theoretical logic from earlier (valence) models of emotional appraisal, are shown to be confounded. Underlying the variation obtained using feeling thermometer measures are two dimensions of emotional response, mastery (positive emotionality) and threat (negative emotionality). Analysis of the 1984 NES survey suggests that positive emotional response is twice as influential as negative emotional response in predicting presidential candidate vote disposition to the presidential candidates. Reliance on emotional response is shown to be uniformly influential across various strata of the electorate.Policy considerations have little direct influence on vote disposition, though policy considerations are indirectly related to vote disposition through the influence of issues on the degree of feelings of threat evoked by the candidates.

Abstract:
This study focused on social desirability in family members' self-reports. 32 clinical families (93 family members) were given self-report measures from the McMaster and Circumplex family-assessment models and a measure of social desirability. Clinicians assessed these families on clinical rating scales from the same models. Regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between self-reports, social desirability scores, and clinicians' ratings. It was expected that social desirability would be a suppressor variable (i.e., when accounted for, the similarity between clinicians' and family members' ratings would be enhanced). This did not occur; instead, social desirability was significantly but negatively correlated with ratings of pathology. Results provide evidence that correcting for social desirability on clinical pencil-and-paper tests is not supported.

The current research is an assessment of both the psychometric properties and circumplex structure of the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ; Schwartz, Melech, Lehmann, Burgess, & Harris, 2001 ). First, the hypothesized 10-factor structure was examined within the framework of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Next, we assessed the circular structure postulated by the human values theory through constrained CFA. Data were obtained from 9,847 participants. Findings corroborated the distinctiveness of the 10 basic value types and their quasicircular arrangement: Factors derived from the PVQ scale were arranged in a circle similar to the theorized structure of values, although some differences emerged between empirical and theoretical models.

Abstract:
The voice plays a crucial role in expressing emotion in popular music. However, the importance of the voice in this context has not been systematically assessed. This study investigates the emotional effect of vocal features in popular music. In particular, it focuses on nonverbal characteristics, including vocal melody and rhythm. To determine the efficacy of these features, they are used to construct a computational Music Emotion Recognition (MER) system. The system is based on the circumplex model that expresses emotion in terms of arousal and valence. Two independent studies were used to develop the system. The first study established models for predicting arousal and valence based on a range of acoustical and nonverbal vocal features. The second study was used for independent validation of these models. Results show that features describing rhythmic qualities of the vocal line produce emotion models with a high level of generalizability. In particular these models reliably predict emotional valence, a well-known issue in existing Music Emotion Recognition systems.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to extend the attitudinal approach to entrepreneurial intentions by using a structural analysis to explore overlooked personal values as the antecedents of entrepreneurial attitude. Based on the widely adopted value system proposed by Schwartz, this study argues that while one cluster of personal values is positively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude that leads to entrepreneurial intention, another cluster of personal values is negatively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude. Design/methodology/approach – Questionnaire responses obtained from a sample of 276 MBA were analyzed using structural equation models to examine the influences of values on entrepreneurial intentions via entrepreneurial attitude. Findings – The results of this study demonstrate that personal values of self-direction, stimulation, achievement, and universalism are all positively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude, which together constitute a comfort zone for entrepreneurship, whereas values in the opposite end of the circumplex including benevolence, tradition, conformity, security, and power are negatively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude. The values that discourage the formation of an entrepreneurial attitude also counter the positive effect of entrepreneurial attitude on intention, making the relationship between entrepreneurial attitude and intention contingent upon value conflicts. Originality/value – This study regards entrepreneurship as a career development and contributes to the entrepreneurship study by differentiating the influences of a vital construct, i.e., personal values, which should not be regarded as a universalism. The value circumplex with a comfort and discomfort zone developed by this study can serve as a platform to help build the view on entrepreneurial intentions in terms of personal values.

Abstract:
Abstract. Using the theoretical framework of circumplex models, we investigated how the actual nonverbal behaviors of interviewers can hinder female applicants’ performance in simulated job interviews. Fifty-seven dyads conducted mock job interviews for a managerial position. Applicants were always women, whereas interviewers were either men or women. Interviewers’ nonverbal dominance (visual dominance, speaking interruptions) and friendliness (smiling, nodding) were coded based on videotapes. Male interviewers’ dominance (but not friendliness) predicted lower self-evaluations of female applicants and lower evaluations made by the interviewers. Female interviewers’ nonverbal behavior did not predict outcomes. Implications for the advancement of women in the workplace are discussed, such as the importance of acknowledging and changing nonverbal dynamics to improve women’s performance in job interviews.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Seven studies involving 1,343 participants showed how circumplex models of social motives can help explain individual differences in preferences for status (having others’ admiration) versus power (controlling valuable resources). Studies 1 to 3 and 7 concerned interpersonal motives in workplace contexts, and found that stronger communal motives (to have mutual trust, support, and cooperation) predicted being more attracted to status (but not power) and achieving more workplace status, while stronger agentic motives (to be firm, decisive, and influential) predicted being more attracted to and achieving more workplace power, and experiencing a stronger connection between workplace power and job satisfaction. Studies 4 to 6 found similar effects for intergroup motives: Stronger communal motives predicted wanting one’s ingroup (e.g., country) to have status—but not power—relative to other groups. Finally, most people preferred status over power, and this was especially true for women, which was partially explained by women having stronger communal motives.

Abstract:
Listening to music makes us move in various ways. Several factors can affect the characteristics of these movements, including individual factors and musical features. Additionally, music-induced movement may also be shaped by the emotional content of the music, since emotions are an important element of musical expression. This study investigates possible relationships between emotional characteristics of music and music-induced, quasi-spontaneous movement. We recorded music-induced movement of 60 individuals, and computationally extracted features from the movement data. Additionally, the emotional content of the stimuli was assessed in a perceptual experiment. A subsequent correlational analysis revealed characteristic movement features for each emotion, suggesting that the body reflects emotional qualities of music. The results show similarities to movements of professional musicians and dancers, and to emotion-specific nonverbal behavior in general, and could furthermore be linked to notions of embodied music cognition. The valence and arousal ratings were subsequently projected onto polar coordinates to further investigate connections between the emotions of Russell’s (1980) circumplex models and the movement features

Abstract:
BackgroundThere are no randomised clinical trials comparing the outcomes of short- with long-term psychodynamic group psychotherapy.AimsTo compare differences in outcome during and after short-and long-term group psychotherapy.MethodIn total, 167 out-patients with mood, anxiety and personality disorders were randomised to short- or long-term group therapy (20 or 80 weekly, 90 min sessions). Outcome measures were: symptoms (Symptom Checklist 90 – Revised), interpersonal problems (Inventory of Interpersonal Problems – Circumplex) and psychosocial functioning (Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) split version: GAF-Symptom and GAF-Function). Change over the 3-year study period was assessed using linear mixed models. The study was registered in clinicalTrials.gov as NCT00521417.ResultsPatients in both groups made significant gains. A significantly larger symptomatic change over time was found for long-term compared with short-term therapy, but no significant differences were detected for the three remaining outcome variables. There was a higher number of premature terminations in the long-term (33.3%) compared with the short-term group (8.6%).ConclusionsShort- and long-term therapy seem equally effective for typical out-patients seeking group psychotherapy, except for symptomatic distress.

Z kolei sztywność wartości i cech interpersonalnych koreluje z ekstrawersją, ugodowością, stabilnością emocjonalną, intelektem, Alfą / Stabilnością, Betą / Plastycznością oraz Ogólnym Czynnikiem Osobowości.

Abstract:
In this article we pursue two goals. The first is a further articulation of the dimensionality of the Dutch trait domain. The second is a detailed mapping of the factorial trait structure, one which includes intelligible and proper niches for various nuances of the trait language and for different interpretations of the main factors of personality language. In realizing these goals, we discuss the reliance on theory in structuring and modelling the domain in question, the type of model to be used, and the comprehensiveness versus the economy of domain representation. The advantages and disadvantages of the simple structure model and the circumplex model are commented upon, and a new framework that integrates these two models is presented. The present results provide confirmation of the existence of five major dimensions that cover the trait domain: (I) Extraversion or Surgency, (II) Agreeableness, (III) Conscientiousness, (IV) Emotional Stability, and (V) Intellect or Openness to Experience. The newly developed representational model, revealing a refined structure of personality characteristics, not only clarifies some of the problems faced in interpreting the Big Five factors, but also forms a starting point for applications.

Abstract:
The emotional effects of music have a cross-cultural component that can be explained through the tonal and non-tonal properties of musical pieces. To investigate the relationship between music and the emotions it arouses, we have built a composite neural network with the aim of predicting both the emotional categorization and the emotional valence and activation of Vieillard et al.’s (2008) musical stimuli. Our neural network uses two Adalines in the first level of the structure to predict activation and emotional valence from a minimal set of temporal and tonal properties of the stimuli (rhythm, tempo, time signature, mode, absolute tonal range and the frequency of the lowest note). In the second level, the network uses a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) network to classify the stimuli into four emotional categories (calm, happiness, fear and sadness). The results have allowed us to replicate the features of the Circumplex Model of Emotion. The percentage of explained variance obtained for activation is satisfactory and higher than in previous research for emotional valence. The percentage of music pieces correctly classified by the SOM was also very high (87%). We discuss the results in relation to competing models of music and emotion.

Abstract:
Emotions are a critical aspect of human behavior. One widely used technique for research in emotion measurement is based on the use of EEG signals. In general terms, the first step of signal processing is the elimination of noise, which can be done in manual or automatic terms. The next step is determining the feature vector using, for example, entropy calculation and its variations to generate a classification model. It is possible to use this approach to classify theoretical models such as the Circumplex model. This model proposes that emotions are distributed in a two-dimensional circular space. However, methods to determine the feature vector are highly susceptible to noise that may exist in the signal. In this article, a new method to adjust the classifier is proposed using metaheuristics based on the black hole algorithm. The method is aimed at obtaining results similar to those obtained with manual noise elimination methods. In order to evaluate the proposed method, the MAHNOB HCI Tagging Database was used. Results show that using the black hole algorithm to optimize the feature vector of the Support Vector Machine we obtained an accuracy of 92.56% over 30 executions.
