Abstract:
Architectures in Indonesia are often identified as 'unique' compared to European and American constructions. They are referred to as Wastuwidya by Mangunwijaya and Nusantara by Prijotomo. This paper, therefore, aimed to examine the reasons for the perceived similar principles between the Indonesian architectures and those in Europe or America and also reviewed the architecture in the country beyond the identity. This involved the application of a historical approach with synchronous-diachronic methods to determine the significance of a historical timeline and its architectural content. The results showed the country’s modern architecture is associated with the foreign entry, its climate, and socio-cultural conditions, and also perceived as a sign of certain political powers presented during the Daendels and Sukarno era. Indonesian and European/American architectural designs were also observed to have different entry processes. Therefore, modern architecture should be perceived as a process rather than a product. © 2020 Johannes Adiyanto

Abstract:
Modern architecture in its golden age has given a lot of influences to many architectures around the world. The spread of modern architecture at that time could not be stopped and became a style that is widely used throughout the world including IndonesiaThe influence of modern architecture emerged in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial occupation. European architects at that time introduced classical European architecture and modern architecture to Indonesian society. During the Colonial occupation and at the beginning of Indonesian independence, European architects designed public buildings such as government buildings, places of worship( like mosques and churches) and commercial buildings as well as several residences using classical European architectural and modern architecture. As the example that we can still see now is the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia, which was designed by architect Friedrich Silaban who self-taught modern architecture. The design of the Istiqlal mosque at a glance looks very much influenced by modern architecture, although domes and tower as a characteristic of Middle East architecture is still been used. The mosque as a whole is designed to look monumental which emphasized the used of a mixture of modern architecture styles.

Abstract:
Modern architecture and Modern furniture originated almost during the same period of time. Modern architects needed furniture compatible with their architecture and because it was not available on the market, architects had to design it themselves. This does not only apply for the period between 1920 and 1940, as other ambitious architectures had tried before to present their buildings as a unit both on the inside and on the outside. For example one can think of projects by Berlage, Gaudí, Mackintosh or Horta or the architectures of Czech Cubism and the Amsterdam School. This phenomenon originated in the 19th century and the furniture designs were usually developed for the architect’s own building designs and later offered to the broader consumer market, sometimes through specialized companies. This is the reason for which an agreement between the architect and the commissioner was needed, something which was not always taken for granted.

Abstract:
It is known that traditional architectures are a product of human conception full of culture and philosophy, while modern architectural concepts prioritize functionality and simplicity that tends to be simple or quick. Now the architectural concept slowly changes according to the conditions of time, then so is the existence of works of architecture that also changes. This condition can be found in almost major cities in Indonesia, where many houses or buildings built still in traditional architecture theme but combined and matched with modern architecture concept. One of many diverse cultures of Indonesia archipelago architecture that has evolved is West Java. There are a lot of people trying to apply the concept of Sundanese traditional house in their residence. Shifting sacred values in traditional concept seems indeed to be lost along with the differences in modern human civilization.

Abstract:
The influence of modern architecture became more visible in Thailand after the country shifted from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy in 1932 and also as a result of economic circumstances and world trends. The first generation of Thai Modernist architects (or the pioneers of modern architecture in Thailand) had their education in Europe because of the necessity to modernize Thailand. The second generation were Thai architects who received their architectural education in Thailand as well as some continuing their studies in the USA. Their works reflect the International Style with a concern for a tropical architecture vocabulary and local material utilization based on economics. As the architectural profession was declared a protected profession in 1965 for Thai architects only, there was very little modern architecture in Thailand designed by foreign architects.

Abstract:
Architecture is the arena on which man's life unfolds, due to the constant changes taking place in life, deformability is demanded to increase the adaptability of modern Architecture. Thus, to achieve such deformability, research on the systematic hierarchy of architectures is carried out; indicating that the hierarchies are the intermediary of the inner transformation of the architecture and the formation process of architecture system is a process of gradual differentiation. With the development of the gradual differentiation process, the flexibility of architecture begins to fail while increasing its determinacy. The key point determining the adaptability of architectures lies in the inter-transformation between the various levels of sub-hierarchy systems. According to the complexity and hierarchy of the transformation, categorization and analysis with future study on the performance manifestation of architectural adaptability design are implemented.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the new field of philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition. The research presented in this paper is part of an ongoing doctoral research concerning the connection between ethics and aesthetics in architecture. The connection between architecture and philosophy is not a novelty. Architectural theory has always looked up to philosophy for inspiration but only recently philosophers have started to study architecture in detail. Architectural theory is still a field that is in search of a better conceptual frame after the failure of the theoretical premises of the Modern Movement and the rise of the "theory speak". Architecture's features as a public art ask for a certain amount of objectivity. The philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition can contribute to a more objective conceptual frame. The principal concerns are familiar to those acquainted with continental philosophy: What makes architecture special among the arts? What is the essence of an architectural work? How we can better define architecture's social mission? But the way of answering them is different. The ethical dimension of architecture is one of the most debated subjects among architects in recent years. There are several contributions on the connection between ethics and aesthetics in the philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition. They have the potential to have an impact on architectural theory and practice.

Does Giles Oliver (letters, arq 5/3) mean to connect the success of the Tate Modern in ‘sucking in huge crowds’ with the success of architectural education? Both in his view seem suspect achievements. The Tate is not proper architecture — it is too brutish and poorly lit — while current architectural education avoids all that is proper to architecture. His message is that both public and consumer opinion counteth for nought in these matters. But what else have professionals ever said? Particularly the generations brought up to believe that unpopularity was architecture's native condition. Frankly I am rather encouraged by the popularity of supposedly arcane subjects like modern art, modern architecture and architectural education. At least we seem to be getting one thing right. Not that I am advocating complacency. Keeping anything alive in our management sodden culture is tricky, particularly the kind of creative team spirit required to make projects work.

William Braham writes that this book has been conceived as a genealogy of modern architectural colour, explaining that he uses the term ‘genealogy’ in the (Deleuzean) sense of it automatically bringing one to an understanding of the distance travelled since the particular origins under research. Such an analysis is useful to Braham who wants to bring to the practising architect an informed view of the use of colour in architecture by investigating the discussions that have surrounded it since the 1830s.

Abstract:
The primary contention of this study is that there are ways to orient architecture other than technological concerns. By studying the nature of architectural machines and their changes through history, their reduction to instrumental and aesthetic concerns is shown to be problematic. These aspects have dominated architectural thinking and making since modernity; however, this history also shows the limits and possibilities of these technological concerns. But modernism has not been homogeneous. During this period, the literary and theatrical works of Alfred Jarry and his science of pataphysics offered a significant approach to engage and resist the machine. His work challenged technological practices through the machine itself. I explore this relative to the human will, knowledge, and creative practices. Modernist architectural machines by Pierre Chareau, Eileen Gray, and Paul Nelson are then studied with respect to this intentionality. Ultimately, these works attempted in various ways to reconcile poetics and ethics in the design of pataphysical machines for living in.

Abstract:
One's way of travel dictates one's perception of the surroundings; People's mode of transportation has also evolved greatly throughout the ages. From foot traffic to carriages, to cars and trains, we tend to travel in faster paces, on increasingly linear paths, and with less freedom to wander. In my opinion, it is starting to become difficult to appeal to this emerging group of moving spectators with traditional ways of building. In my thesis, I explore ways to design buildings that focus on creating perspectival images for the moving spectators who are traveling on modern transportation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the stylistic development of the Italian architect Aldo Rossi from Modern to Post-Modern design. A summary of the Modern architectural movement is presented along with an analysis of the developments in Post-Modern architecture since 1960. The influence of Italian culture on Rossi's career is discussed through a brief survey of Ancient Roman archetypal motifs and Italian architecture of the early 20th century. Several key buildings proposed or constructed by Rossi from 1960-1990 are discussed based on his concepts of analogy, typology, morphology and rationalism.

Full text
Abstract:
The Taiwanese people have suffered severe challenges and several changes to their national imaginations and cultural identifications during the country’s period of modernisation since the late 19th century. In particular, following the political liberalisation process in the 1990s, nationalism and national identity has become a rising and controversial issue in Taiwanese society. This thesis explores the relations between architectural production and the formation of national identity in Taiwan’s modernisation history. By putting Taiwan and its people as the research subjects, this thesis examines how different political authorities propagandised the imagined communities and promoted national identities to people through architectural production and disciplined spaces. Influenced by ideas derived from semiotics and postcolonialism, this research sees the formation of national identity as a signification process in creating myths, and as a power struggle between the authority and the people. Architecture, as the symbolic representation of national identity, needs other cultural references and discursive narratives to gain its meanings; and, as the spatial construction of national identity, it also needs functional programmes and social contexts to discipline people’s living and activities. By exposing the power structure of the signification process and the spatial administration, this research de-mystifies the authenticity of national identity. Based on different power authorities that dominated the construction of national identity, this thesis explores four national identities and imaginations which appeared in Taiwan from 1895 to 2008: first is colonial identity under Japanese colonisation; second is Chinese identity under the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) administration; third is the prevalence of the American influenced modernist ideology; and fourth is the rise of Taiwanese nationalism. This thesis thus undertakes a comprehensive historical examination of how the state powers manipulated national imaginations and constructed national identities through architectural production and people’s daily lives.

Abstract:
Architects and designers are obligated to think comprehensively to create aesthetically pleasing buildings together with functional features. The modern movement of architecture represents a dramatic movement in the buildings design to create a different functional and new architecture. There is a debate about the priority of beauty (aesthetics) and functionality (ethics) in this architectural style and leads to ambiguity in evaluating ethics and aesthetics. Hence, the study aims to understand the relationship between ethics and aesthetics value in architecture's modern movement. This study hypothesizes that there is a significant relationship between ethical and aesthetical values through the functionality of modern architecture. The study has proposed a conceptual model to be applied in future studies on different case studies. This is through assessment tools to evaluate the presence of ethics and aesthetics in modern architectural style.

Abstract:
Abstract: This study is to focus on the relationship between Le Corbusier and Turkish Architecture and the main question of the study is what Le Corbusier means for Turkish architecture. The method chosen in the research is to seek out answer this question over two main axes (architectural education and architectural practice). Besides a general overview in the section where Le Corbusier is examined within Turkey’s architectural education, it was consulted to student opinions and it was mentioned about the topics of master’s and doctorate theses conducted as directly related to Le Corbusier. Within Turkey’s architectural practice, the projects performed by being inspired of him in Turkey were included and these projects were examined in relation with Le Corbusier’s five main principles. The projects examined show that Le Corbusier has become an important guiding spirit in modern Turkish architecture and additionally, the architectural products arising as a conclusion of inspirations are qualified products verifying Turkey’s architectural medium. Besides, there is a sub-section titled as Le Corbusier’s experiences in Turkey in this section. In this section, by showing reference to Le Corbusier’s travels in Turkey and the things engrossed as a result of his travels (with drawings and writings), it is emphasized that the relationship between Le Corbusier and Turkish architecture can be interpreted as a two-way interaction. Abstract:
As an emerging field, Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) aims to reduce or eliminate manual operations that require expertise in machine learning. In this paper, a graph-based architecture is employed to represent flexible combinations of ML models, which provides a large searching space compared to tree-based and stacking-based architectures. Based on this, an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to search for the best architecture, where the mutation and heredity operators are the key for architecture evolution. With Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization, the proposed approach can automate the workflow of machine learning. On the PMLB dataset, the proposed approach shows the state-of-the-art performance compared with TPOT, Autostacker, and auto-sklearn. Some of the optimized models are with complex structures which are difficult to obtain in manual design.
