In the broadest sense this paper exhibits an existentialist impulse in Byron's poetry. More particularly, I examine four of Byron's major works to analyze the similar ways in which his characters become alert to their being through the emotion of despair, and as a result I contend that Byron can be read anticipating the existentialist aim to explore being in terms of angst. Previous work links early modern England with modern Ireland solely through the figure of Shakespeare.
