Abstract:
This thesis presents a study on the way of thinking and way of design of the Czech born architect Antonin Raymond (1888-1976). The data used for this study was a series of lectures and articles written by Raymond between 1935 and 1967 and original architectural drawings and photographs. These documents were all collected personally by the author at Raymond’s former studio in Karuizawa and Architectural Office in Tokyo. These documents provide a new source of information on Raymond’s residential work and have been compiled in an electronic database available with the thesis. The database includes architectural drawings, original and contemporary photographs, and general information on a majority of the residential works designed by Raymond between 1920 and 1938. The aim of this thesis is to answer the following question: what is the core quality or concept that identifies a work of architecture as Raymond’s? In order to answer this question, the thesis presents a study on the identity of Antonin Raymond as an architect, which the author has chosen to refer to as “Architectural Identity”. The essential quality of Raymond’s “Architectural Identity” is defined through the study of the architect’s way of thinking, way of design, and the relationship between the two. These three elements are considered by the author as the three components of “Architectural Identity”. For the study of Raymond’s way of design, the thesis focuses on one residential project, which is Raymond’s own summer house, built in Karuizawa in 1933.

Smith, Liam Arthur. "Instruments of Memory: The Architect as Archivist." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/25285.

Full text
Abstract:
The mental space in which the architect formulates, tests, and cultivates an idea is deformed by memory, so that nothing projected into this space is bereft of association. However, neither is this space constrained by physical reality, allowing the architect a certain freedom to visualize the totality of an object and the world in which it is projected, simultaneously and in suspension: a space between memory and imagination. Memories and experiences layer richness upon this inner world and form the context for its manifestation; its realization. The deliberate and conscientious curation of this inner world-- the architect as archivist of memory and experience-- is an essential practice for the development of the architect and the worlds in which they operate.

Abstract:
The increasing use of solar energy technologies in the residential sector brings new challenges to professionals who work in the field of design, such as the need to restructure their mindset regarding to the conception and to the development of design, in order to ensure the performance and the efficiency of safe building systems. In this context, this thesis main goal is to propose a conceptual model for the identification and qualification of risk within residential architecture that uses solar energy technologies based on systemography. It\'s an investigative and experimental research, considering aspects related to: meet the demands of safety in use, the knowledge construction and how those could be managed. The experimental development was carried out during the process of design, production, assembly, use and operation of a prototype named Ekó House. The applied method has encompassed four stages: 1) Exploratory - bibliographic research about technologies, codes, rules and design practices; 2) Definitions - the choice of the theoretical basis to ground the model; 3) Development - propositions and experiments and 4) Proofing and consolidation. In order to verify the model it was carried out a test wherewith is possible to perform a validation by analytical generalization, that is, expand and generalize the theory. The proposed model, which represents an innovation in sistemography field, was based on LE MOIGNES\'s Systemic Theory. This Theory enabled the implementation in complex systems, using information, decision and operating processors which condition the design systemic integration. The results obtained by the research show that the model: a) incorporates knowledge, thus, being helpful along the decision-making process; b) eases the understanding and the overview of the diverse information needed by the design; c) formalizes a logic of design conception and development; d) xvii organizes and prioritizes the design technical recommendations [rules and manufacturers]; e) is able to promote an interference in the system\'s organization and coordination in space and also in its relation to functionality and aesthetics; it also f) guides the use of more suitable configurations to the design development. The model presents itself as a tool that is capable of reducing misuse of standards, conflicts between building systems, Technologies and architecture, as well as design failures that compromise safety in use.

"The Transformation of the Modern American Kitchen from 1901 through 1964: From Hell on Earth to the Warmest Room in the House." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.20868.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Many of the scholars that have chronicled the creation of the modern American kitchen have written about how the technological, societal, and cultural revolutions of the twentieth century played a role in dramatically changing its structure and design. More recently, some scholarly research has focused on the evolution of the kitchen and its meaning over time. In several of these research publications scholars profess that the modern American kitchen, more than any other room, has come to symbolize the center or heart of the home, and the warmest room in the house. However, they are quick to acknowledge that, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the kitchen was not so fondly regarded. Little research exists regarding why individuals increasingly became attached to the kitchen or how that attachment influenced the layout, size, objects, and activities conducted in the kitchen. This thesis fills this void by exploring the implications of place attachment on the evolution of the American kitchen from 1901 through 1964. By approaching this research from a combination of design history and environmental psychology, this thesis provides a new perspective to our understanding of the evolution of kitchen design. Using this two-pronged approach, this study contributes to our understanding of the evolution of the kitchen. This study traces the evolution of the modern American kitchen using two qualitative methodologies: material culture and phenomenology. Drawing from a variety of floor plans, advertisements, and articles contained in the House Beautiful magazine 1901 through 1964, as well as writings from popular domestic advisors of the period, this thesis charts the transformation of the modern American kitchen from a "hell on earth" into the "heart and soul of the home." By combining place attachment theory and kitchen design research this thesis provides interior designers new insight into designing kitchens that foster endearing emotional attachment for our clients.

Traditional heyuan are closely related to our memories and histories. Without appropriate renovation and restoration, these houses fade away as time elapses, with such memory and history coming to an end with the structure. In response to changes in living conditions and time development, traditional houses have evolved into sanheyuan, and quadrangle. To prolong their lifecycles, those heyuan have been rebuilt as personal residences, business areas, exhibition halls, or accommodations, with an aim to renovate traditional heyuan and make them to enter another lifecycle. However, how traditional heyuan fit for changes in the modern living environment has been a major concern for related researchers, interior designers, and proprietors. The current study, therefore, aimed to carry out fieldwork on cases related to traditional heyuan reuse, and proceeded with architectural drawings with computer graphics. The results were as follows: 1.Cases of traditional heyuan renovation in Tainan City and Kaohsiung City were mainly located in mountainous or suburban areas. 2.Based on current renovations, related techniques were divided into three types: keeping the structure intact, juxtaposing the old and the new, and building a brand-new heyuan structure. 3.Floor layout of heyuan structures were mainly for providing business-related customer services.

Pfretzschner, Kathryn S. "Practical modeling for load paths in a realistic, light-frame wood house." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/34042.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to develop and validate practical modeling methods for investigating load paths and system behavior in a realistic, light-frame wood structure. The modeling methods were validated against full-scale tests on subassemblies and an L-shaped house. The model of the L-shaped house was then modified and used to investigate the effects of re-entrant corners, wall openings and gable-end retrofits on system behavior and load paths. Results from this study showed that the effects of adding re-entrant corners and wall openings on uplift load distributions were dependent on the orientation of the trusses with respect to the walls. Openings added to walls parallel to the trusses had the least effect on loads carried by the remaining walls in the building. Varying re-entrant corner dimensions of the L-shaped house under ASCE 7-05 (ASCE 2005) design wind loads caused increasing degrees of torsion throughout the house, depending on the relative location and stiffness of the in-plane walls (parallel to the applied wind loads) as well as the assumed direction of the wind loads. Balancing the stiffness of the walls on either side of the house with the largest re-entrant corner helped to decrease torsion in the structure somewhat. Finally, although previous full-scale tests on gable-end sections verified the effectiveness of the gable-end retrofit that was recently adopted into the 2010 Florida building code, questions remained about the effects of the retrofit on torsion in a full building. The current study found that adding the gable-end retrofits to the L-shaped house did not cause additional torsion.

Eloff, Corné. "Spatial technology as a tool to analyse and combat crime." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1193.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the utilisation of spatial technologies as a tool to analyse and combat crime. The study deals specifically with remote sensing and its potential for being integrated with geographical information systems (GIS). The integrated spatial approach resulted in the understanding of land use class behaviour over time and its relationship to specific crime incidents per police precinct area. The incorporation of spatial technologies to test criminological theories in practice, such as the ecological theories of criminology, provides the science with strategic value. It proves the value of combining multi-disciplinary scientific fields to create a more advanced platform to understand land use behaviour and its relationship to crime. Crime in South Africa is a serious concern and it impacts negatively on so many lives. The fear of crime, the loss of life, the socio-economic impact of crime, etc. create the impression that the battle against crime has been lost. The limited knowledge base within the law enforcement agencies, limited logistical resources and low retention rate of critical staff all contribute to making the reduction of crime more difficult to achieve. A practical procedure of using remote sensing technology integrated with geographical information systems (GIS), overlaid with geo-coded crime data to provide a spatial technological basis to analyse and combat crime, is illustrated by a practical study of the Tshwane municipality area. The methodology applied in this study required multi-skilled resources incorporating GIS and the understanding of crime to integrate the diverse scientific fields into a consolidated process that can contribute to the combating of crime in general. The existence of informal settlement areas in South Africa stresses the socio-economic problems that need to be addressed as there is a clear correlation of land use data with serious crime incidents in these areas. The fact that no formal cadastre exists for these areas, combined with a great diversity in densification and growth of the periphery, makes analysis very difficult without remote sensing imagery. Revisits over time to assess changes in these areas in order to adapt policing strategies will create an improved information layer for responding to crime. Final computerised maps generated from remote sensing and GIS layers are not the only information that can be used to prevent and combat crime. An important recipe for ultimately successfully managing and controlling crime in South Africa is to strategically combine training of the law enforcement agencies in the use of spatial information with police science. The researcher concludes with the hope that this study will contribute to the improved utilisation of spatial technology to analyse and combat crime in South Africa. The ultimate vision is the expansion of the science of criminology by adding an advanced spatial technology module to its curriculum.
