Abstract:
Postcolonial Publishing and Indigenous Publishing, like Hegel's Africa, are Often Imagined to be Without a History. Indeed, in A Companion to the History of the Book, published by Wiley Blackwell in 2009 and heralded by Adrian Johns as particularly exemplary in that the editors “take the term book in a broad sense to include not only codex volumes and scrolls, but also periodicals, ephemera, and even ancient Babylonian clay tablets” (Review of Companion 782), no region of the global South gets a chapter to itself, and Africa gets only two entries in the index: in a one-sentence remark about Middle Eastern and North African Islamic book production before 1100 and in a parenthetical reference to slavery in a chapter on libraries that mentions colonization. Johns himself has written a huge work on “the book”—that is, about early modern Britain (Nature). In David Finkelstein and Alistair MacCleery's recently reprinted An Introduction to Book History, “the book” is unapologetically introduced as a Western form: the introduction makes it clear that the topic of the volume is overwhelmingly “Western European traditions of social communication through writing …” (30). The definite article is fearless in book history and occludes the history and travels of the book elsewhere, reinstalling it, time after time, in the North Atlantic regions that seem to be its natural habitat.

Abstract:
The research on acupuncture has increased steadily over the years and regular review and revision of the direction of future acupuncture research are necessary. This paper aims to review and explore the significance of acupuncture depth in modern acupuncture research. Searches conducted in Science Direct and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases reflected a lack of focus on depth of acupuncture. We propose that the research trends of acupuncture should progress to the depth of insertion. It is suggested that future acupuncture research, especially randomized controlled trials (RCTs), should take into consideration the depth of insertion. Comparison between databases using different language of medium suggests the need for international collaboration of researchers from the same field. It is also crucial to inherit and innovate traditional medicine (TM) through modern technology. The use of bibliometric method is also suitable for development of TM research trends. Acupuncture and depth should be considered as one of the future directions of acupuncture research.

The following article draws on research that I carried out as part of a master’s degree in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in University College Cork (UCC) between 2015-2016. I teach Irish language and literature in the Modern Irish Dept. of UCC. The intervention I used with my students was role-play which is not generally used in the teaching of Irish Literature. My research was an investigation into the learning students associate with the use of role-play in literature lectures. The findings show that while students reported learning many different things from role-play, there was no consensus as to what one could learn from the use of role-play in literature lectures. I am encouraged by the findings and will continue to use role-play in the future.1

This study examined the simultaneous effects of L2 individual difference (ID) variables (aptitude, motivation, strategy use, language processing experience, and gender) on English as a foreign language (EFL) breadth and depth of L2 vocabulary knowledge of 492 Korean university–level learners. Independent variable measures included the (a) Korean version of the Modern Language Aptitude Test, (b) L2 Attitude/Motivation Battery, (c) L2 Vocabulary Learning Strategies Survey, and (d) L2 Language Processing Experience Survey. The dependent variables (i.e., vocabulary breadth and depth) were assessed via the Vocabulary Levels Test and Word Associates Test, respectively. Employing multigroup structural equation modeling (SEM), results revealed positive significant effects of (a) aptitude on vocabulary breadth and depth, (b) motivation on strategy use, and (c) motivation on both dependent variables, however mediated by a significant direct effect of language processing experience on the dependent variables. There were no effects obtained for L2 strategy use nor for participant gender in the model.

The agricultural IoT can be combined with Zigbee, a short-range wireless network technology for monitoring systems, to solve the excessively large planting area and other defects in agricultural production. Meanwhile, the modernization of planting and harvesting has set the stage for deep learning. Unlike the artificial neural network, the deep learning is an important intelligent algorithm, capable of solving many real-world problems. Therefore, this paper probes into the problems of modern automatic agriculture. First, the routing allocation technology and transmission mode were optimized to solve the energy consumption problem. Second, the classification model based on deep learning algorithm was put forward according to the application of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) in continuous monitoring of soil temperature and humidity. Despite the lack of upper soil humidity sensor in agriculture, the model can still classify the soil moisture of the nodes, and derive the main soil moisture content. Finally, a solution was presented based on agricultural ZigBee WSN technology. In addition to cheap cost and low power consumption, the solution has the functions of reminding and recognition due to the adoption of artificial intelligence algorithm. Suffice it to say that the solution is a successful attempt to integrate artificial intelligence and sensor technology into agricultural modernization.</span>

Abstract:

Abstract:
The starting point of this research is the question, may reading acquisition be more or less effective depending on the language in which it is perform? Two categories for classifying the languages have been developed. First the notion of linguistic family is employed to describe the languages from a cultural and historical perspective. Secondly, the notion of orthographic depth is used for differentiating the languages according to the correspondence between orthography and phonetic. These categories have been related to the databases PIRLS 2001 and 2006 (international assessments about reading developed by the IEA), the aim being to connect reading achievement to the language in which students answered the test. However, it is clear that the language is not an isolated factor, but part of a complex structure of determinants of reading. Therefore, factors related to students and schools have also been incorporated to this research. Moreover, the multidimensionality of the reading process has been taken into account by distinguishing in the analysis the different aspects that made the process according to PIRLS: informative reading, literary reading, process comprehension of high and low order. To answer to the questions proposed by this research a hierarchical statistical model (multilevel) was developed, it was able to account for the connection between reading achievement, language and other associated factors. As a result, contextual factors (home and school) were more significant than language. Moreover, determinacy may vary if taking into account educational systems.

Abstract:
This essay concerns the portrayals of creole women in the poems of Charles Baudelaire and how these specific portrayals show connotations to the colonial project and the modernity in which Baudelaire himself lived and worked. By using a hermeneutic method of viewing and reading the poems and essay, written by Charles Baudelaire, through a postcolonial theoretical perspective. By doing this we wish to examine closely the portrayal of creole women in relation to postcolonial theories and its links to modernity as a sociocultural phenomenon. This essay also tries to show how these kinds of literary analyses can in fact be didactically relevant in educational work. In conclusion we can argue that Baudelaire was in fact heavily influenced by the colonial and modern projects of his time.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay is based on my own translation from French to Swedish of parts of the play Hôtel Pacifiqueby the Québécois author Fanny Britt. The purpose of the essay, apart from creating a text performable in its target language context, is to discuss and analyze the specialized nature of translating drama. The essay also aims to provide new perspectives on Québécois French and problems related to translating language varieties. The spoken word is the focal point: i.e. the lines of the drama and the characteristic oral features of Québécois French. Newmark's communicative translation method is used as the main translation principle. The method proves to be compatible with the text type despite certain exceptions. The result was a modern Swedish play with colloquial and idiomatic language. However, in order to determine if the text is performable, the drama must be presented on stage, which is a future goal.

Almeida, Rui Nuno de. "Portuguese sign language recognition via computer vision and depth sensor." Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/8231.

Full text
Abstract:
Sign languages are used worldwide by a multitude of individuals. They are mostly used by the deaf communities and their teachers, or people associated with them by ties of friendship or family. Speakers are a minority of citizens, often segregated, and over the years not much attention has been given to this form of communication, even by the scientific community. In fact, in Computer Science there is some, but limited, research and development in this area. In the particular case of sign Portuguese Sign Language-PSL that fact is more evident and, to our knowledge there isn’t yet an efficient system to perform the automatic recognition of PSL signs. With the advent and wide spreading of devices such as depth sensors, there are new possibilities to address this problem. In this thesis, we have specified, developed, tested and preliminary evaluated, solutions that we think will bring valuable contributions to the problem of Automatic Gesture Recognition, applied to Sign Languages, such as the case of Portuguese Sign Language. In the context of this work, Computer Vision techniques were adapted to the case of Depth Sensors. A proper gesture taxonomy for this problem was proposed, and techniques for feature extraction, representation, storing and classification were presented. Two novel algorithms to solve the problem of real-time recognition of isolated static poses were specified, developed, tested and evaluated. Two other algorithms for isolated dynamic movements for gesture recognition (one of them novel), have been also specified, developed, tested and evaluated. Analyzed results compare well with the literature.

(9148919), Marsalene E. Robbins. ""The Breadth, and Length, and Depth, and Height" of Early Modern English Biblical Translations." Thesis, 2020.

Find full text
Abstract:

The significance of early modern Bible translation cannot be overstated, but its “breadth, and length, and depth, and height” have often been understated (King James Version, Ephesians 3.18). In this study, I use three representative case studies of very different types of translation to create a more dynamic understanding of actual Bible translation practices in early modern England. These studies examine not only the translations themselves but also the ways that the translation choices they contain interacted with early modern readers.

The introductory Chapter One outlines the history of translation and of Bible translation more specifically. It also summarizes the states of the fields into which this work falls, Translation Studies and Religion and Literature. It articulates the overall scope and goals of the project, which are not to do something entirely new, per se, but rather to use a new framework to update the work that has already been done on early modern English Bible translation. Chapter Two presents a case study in formal interlingual translation that analyzes a specific word-level translation choice in the King James Version (KJV) to demonstrate the politics involved even in seemingly minor translation choices. Chapter Three treats the intermedial translation of the Book of Psalms in the Sternhold and Hopkins psalter. By using the language and meter of the populace and using specific translation choices to accommodate the singing rather than reading of the Psalms, the Sternhold and Hopkins psalter facilitates a more active and participatory experience for popular worshippers in early modern England. Finally, Chapter Four analyzes John Milton’s literary translation in Paradise Lost and establishes it as a spiritual and cultural authority along the lines of formal interlingual translations. If we consider this translation as an authoritative one, Milton’s personal theology expressed therein becomes a potential theological model for readers as well.

By creating a more flexible understanding of what constitutes an authoritative translation in early modern England, this study expands the possibilities for the theological, interpretive, and practical applications of biblical texts, which touched not only early modern readers but left their legacies for modern readers of all kinds as well.

Abstract:
As spoken natural language dialog systems technology continues to make great strides, numerous issues regarding dialog processing still need to be resolved. This book presents an exciting new dialog processing architecture that allows for a number of behaviors required for effective human-machine interactions, including: problem-solving to help the user carry out a task, coherent subdialog movement during the problem-solving process, user model usage, expectation usage for contextual interpretation and error correction, and variable initiative behavior for interacting with users of differing expertise. The book also details how different dialog problems in processing can be handled simultaneously, and provides instructions and in-depth result from pertinent experiments. Researchers and professionals in natural language systems will find this important new book an invaluable addition to their libraries.

Abstract:
This volume aims to provide an unprecedented breadth of analysis on the development of modern Greek politics, especially from the restoration of democracy in 1974 to the present day. Over forty-three chapters, contributors provide authoritative accounts of what is known about a particular area. Never before has such a volume been produced, in any language. This is not intended as a student textbook, but as a scholarly reference for all who are interested in contemporary Greece. As such, it provides a depth of analysis couched within comparative and conceptual frames, to link the case of Greece to a wider audience, especially those already familiar with a broader political science literature. In its authoritative and reflective essays, it is hoped that the volume may serve as a point of common reference for some time to come. Its essays are structured across a set of inter-connecting themes: conceptual frames by which to understand modern Greek politics; political institutions; party political traditions; political and social interests; public policy; external relations; and political leaders. With this breadth, the volume takes an eclectic approach in terms of historical, conceptual, and methodological interpretation. Its breadth offers analyses relevant not only to political science, but also economics, international relations, law, sociology, and social policy.

Abstract:
This book takes an in-depth look at the widespread language of violence and abjection in early modern European love poetry. Beginning in fourteenth-century Italy, the book shows how Petrarch established a pattern of inequality between suffering poet and exalted Beloved rooted in political parrhēsia. Sixteenth-and early seventeenth-century French and English poets reshaped Petrarch's model into an idiom of extravagant brutality coded to their own historical circumstances. The book argues that these poets exaggerated the posture of the downtrodden lover, adapting the rhetoric of powerless desire to forge a new “countersovereignty” from within the heart of vulnerability—a potentially revolutionary position through which to challenge cultural, religious, and political authority. Creating a secular equivalent to the martyr, early modern sonneteers crafted a voice that was both critical and unstoppable because it suffered. The book tracks the development of the counter-sovereign voice from Francesco Petrarca to Maurice Scève, Joachim du Bellay, Théodore-Agrippa d'Aubigné, Edmund Spenser, and William Shakespeare. Through interdisciplinary and transnational analyses, the text reads early modern sonnets as sites of contestation and collaboration and rewrites the relationship between early modern literary forms.

Abstract:
AbstractThe paper proposes a novel theory of the categorization of acts and applies it to the semantics of action verbs, with fundamental consequences for semantic theory and beyond. The theory is based on Goldman’s (Theory of human action. Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ, 1970) multilevel theory of action which is taken here as a theory of categorization. Goldman’s central notion is level-generation: acts of a type may under circumstances generate acts of other, more abstract types. The acts form a hierarchical structure which Goldman calls an act-tree. Level-generation results in a conceptual relation called c-constitution here, i.e. constitution under the given circumstances; I also introduce the more general term cascade for act-trees. In the second part, multilevel cascade-structure categorization is combined with a cognitive semantics that models meanings with Barsalou frames. A multilevel analysis of the concept of writing is discussed in depth and detail in order to illustrate the potential and the consequences of a cascade approach to verb semantics. It is shown that the concept of c-constitution can be generalized as to cover the roles of persons and objects across levels in a cascade. The generalization suggests that multilevel categorization may be a very general and fundamental phenomenon in the psychology of categorization.

Abstract:
Sign languages, structurally different from oral languages, are based on gestures and involve their own grammars and repertoires of lexical units (signals or signs), and they play an important role in establishing communication among deaf people around the world. This chapter primarily focuses on the development of dictionaries for Libras (an acronym for Língua Brasileira de Sinais, or ‘Brazilian Language of Signs’), the natural language of the Brazilian deaf community. It traces the influence of the first dictionary of the deaf in Brazil, Iconographia dos Signaes dos Surdos-Mudos (‘Iconography of Signs of Deaf-Mutes’), which was published in 1875 by the National Institute of Education of the Deaf (INES) and authored by Flausino José da Gama, a student at the Institute. In their demonstration of the influence and inspiration this dictionary gave to lexicographers who followed da Gama, Bidarra and Martins outline the historical trajectory of sign languages up to the present, considering different and parallel paths for sign languages in different countries, forms of stigmatization of sign language, and barriers to its use. Incorporating this historical and transnational analysis, Bidarra and Martins present both a broad discussion of the various models of sign language dictionaries that have been used around the world and an in-depth analysis of the development of Libras dictionaries in Brazil to the modern day.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the use of indigenous languages during antenatal care (ANC) sessions among mothers in Lagos state. Authors investigate factors that influence the use of indigenous languages, the most preferred mode of presentation, and how the languages affect reception, participation, and knowledge of mothers on safe motherhood practices. Using in-depth interviews with nurses and observations during the ANC sessions, the study found that indigenous languages engender participation and are effective in building self-esteem, trust, and confidence of mothers. Songs in the indigenous language, particularly Yoruba language, help mothers retain and recall safe motherhood messages easily. Mothers generally demonstrate their understanding during the question and answer sessions, while also serving as agents of information reinforcement among themselves using indigenous languages. In view of the occasional need for interpreters, the study recommends that health workers should be encouraged to take courses in indigenous languages within their region as a second language.

Abstract:
This chapter considers Charles Lamb's deviation from eighteenth-century social and literary conventions. It reads together Lamb's tactful persona of Elia with his fellow essayists and contemporaneous debates about social change. Here, tact is a product of the modern city: never before had so many different people lived in such close proximity to one another, in a situation that required new forms of relating to difference and a reform of established, absolutist systems of status evaluation. Lamb's essays resist coercive claims to truth, keep meaning on the move, and preserve desire and possibility within social relations. Elia's language makes use of the possibilities of the essay form in order to provide the conditions for a phenomenology of tactful relation, a virtual reality, or what Lamb calls “illusion:” the cultivation of a neutral and impersonal space existing between people.

Abstract:
In this chapter, a sequential modeling approach has been applied for modeling of laser transmission welding process using finite element method (FEM) and artificial neural network (ANN) technique to predict the weld pool dimensions in a shorter time frame. The scripting language, APDL (ANSYS® Parametric Design Language), is used to develop the three-dimensional FE model. During preprocessing, all the major physical phenomena of laser transmission welding process are incorporated into the model physics. Based on the temperature field predicted by the model, the weld pool dimensions (i.e., weld width and weld penetration depth) are calculated. The weld dimensions predicted by the developed FE model are further used for training a neural network model. It is found from the results of test data sets that the developed ANN model can predict the outputs with significant accuracy and takes less prediction time, which in turn saves time, cost, and the efforts for performing experiments.

A parallel programming model is an abstraction of a parallel system that allows expression of both algorithms and shared data structures. To accommodate the diversity in parallel system architectures and user requirements, there are a variety of programming models including the models providing a shared memory view or a distributed memory view of the system. The programming models are implemented as libraries, language extensions, or compiler directives. This chapter provides a discussion on programming models and its implementations aimed at application developers, system software researchers, and hardware architects. The first part provides an overview of the programming models. The second part is an in-depth discussion on high-performance networking interface to implement the programming model. The last part of the chapter discusses implementation of a programming model with a case study. Each part of the chapter concludes with a discussion on current research trends and its impact on future architectures.

Abstract:
Detecting buffer overruns from a source code is one of the most common and yet challenging tasks in program analysis. Current approaches based on rigid rules and handcrafted features are limited in terms of flexible applicability and robustness due to diverse bug patterns and characteristics existing in sophisticated real-world software programs. In this paper, we propose a novel, data-driven approach that is completely end-to-end without requiring any hand-crafted features, thus free from any program language-specific structural limitations. In particular, our approach leverages a recently proposed neural network model called memory networks that have shown the state-of-the-art performances mainly in question-answering tasks. Our experimental results using source code samples demonstrate that our proposed model is capable of accurately detecting different types of buffer overruns. We also present in-depth analyses on how a memory network can learn to understand the semantics in programming languages solely from raw source codes, such as tracing variables of interest, identifying numerical values, and performing their quantitative comparisons.

Abstract:
Multi-modal fusion has been widely involved in focuses of the modern artificial intelligence research, e.g., from visual content to languages and backward. Common-used multi-modal fusion methods mainly include element-wise product, element-wise sum, or even simply concatenation between different types of features, which are somewhat straightforward but lack in-depth analysis. Recent studies have shown fully exploiting interactions among elements of multi-modal features will lead to a further performance gain. In this paper, we put forward a new approach of multi-modal fusion, namely Multi-modal Circulant Fusion (MCF). Particularly, after reshaping feature vectors into circulant matrices, we define two types of interaction operations between vectors and matrices. As each row of the circulant matrix shifts one elements, with newly-defined interaction operations, we almost explore all possible interactions between vectors of different modalities. Moreover, as only regular operations are involved and defined a priori, MCF avoids increasing parameters or computational costs for multi-modal fusion. We evaluate MCF with tasks of video captioning and temporal activity localization via language (TALL). Experiments on MSVD and MSRVTT show our method obtains the state-of-the-art for video captioning. For TALL, by plugging into MCF, we achieve a performance gain of roughly 4.2% on TACoS.

Abstract:
Previous research has demonstrated the power of leveraging prior knowledge to improve the performance of deep models in natural language processing. However, traditional methods neglect the fact that redundant and irrelevant knowledge exists in external knowledge bases. In this study, we launched an in-depth empirical investigation into downstream tasks and found that knowledge-enhanced approaches do not always exhibit satisfactory improvements. To this end, we investigate the fundamental reasons for ineffective knowledge infusion and present selective injection for language pretraining, which constitutes a model-agnostic method and is readily pluggable into previous approaches. Experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate that our approach can enhance state-of-the-art knowledge injection methods.

Despite a multitude of empirical studies, little consensus exists on whether neural networks are able to generalise compositionally. As a response to this controversy, we present a set of tests that provide a bridge between, on the one hand, the vast amount of linguistic and philosophical theory about compositionality of language and, on the other, the successful neural models of language. We collect different interpretations of compositionality and translate them into five theoretically grounded tests for models that are formulated on a task-independent level. To demonstrate the usefulness of this evaluation paradigm, we instantiate these five tests on a highly compositional data set which we dub PCFG SET, apply the resulting tests to three popular sequence-to-sequence models and provide an in-depth analysis of the results.

Abstract:
With the advent of new digital media technologies offering immersive virtual environments have emerged new modes of architectural representation. How, in turn, can these technologies shape the less visible, and visual, aspects of architectural production? This paper considers such digital, immersive technologies as Mixed, Virtual, and Augmented Reality within the historical and theoretical context of digital media to better understand their function in charting a frontier for the three dimensional representation of architecture. I propose the notion of the hypermodel, a “hypertext version” of digital models that contains and “opens up” to more than the physical parts of a building. Hyper model is a connector of digital space and the physical world— represented via multiple forms of media—revealing the temporal expanse and informational depth of the virtual beyond the bounds of an architectural artifact. In this sense, the new medium also hints at and allows for novel collaborative methods. The new language of design and communication at work in the mixed reality medium is itself interconnected — it reflects and reinforces the inter-disciplinary and inter-media nature of architectural production today.

Abstract:
For detecting potential problems of a cutter path, cutting force simulation in the NC milling process is necessary prior to actual machining. A milling operation is geometrically equivalent to a Boolean subtraction of the swept volume of a cutter moving along a path from a solid model representing the stock shape. In order to precisely estimate the cutting force, the subtraction operation must be executed for every small motion of the cutter. The performance and the cost of the polygon rendering LSI called GPU are dramatically improved these days. By using GPU, the required time for critical computations in the geometric milling simulation can be drastically reduced. In this paper, the computation speed of two known GPU accelerated milling simulation methods, which are the depth buffer based method and the parallel processing based method with CUDA language, are compared. Computational experiments with complex milling simulations show that the implementation with CUDA is several times faster than the depth buffer based method when the cutter motion in the simulation process is sufficiently small.

Abstract:
Precise vertical positioning has a very significant impact on the accuracy and reliability of the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) working process. This paper establishes an experimental system which is capable of controlling and measuring the vertical position of ROV. The control signal output system is developed by integrating certain modules such as video recording, image-analog-digital signal converting, timing depth calculating and force signal outputting modules. The effects of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) method on ROV depth control in still water and under various regular waves was tested and compared. The causes of difference of control effect between in still water and in waves were analyzed. Giving insight into the hydrodynamic characteristics and consequent movement of ROV, a practical underwater vehicle maneuvering mathematical model was established. The space motion equations were set up to solve the underwater vehicle maneuvering problem. The effects acted on the carrier by the waves were analyzed in order to develop a feasible control strategy that is applicable to the practical operation. Unsatisfactory effects of thrust output are optimized with MATLAB simulation based on ITAE criterion, using the simplex method for re-tuning PID parameters. Experimental results show that the system for measuring and controlling the vertical position of the ROV is successful. With an appropriate time interval for data collecting, the ROV model’s vertical depth can be effectively determined by the program written in VB language in the still water and small wave height situation. While the wave height increases or the wave period changes, the program needs to be adjusted. Simulation results also show that the wave frequency response abates as the wave period decreases. Compared to the original PID parameters, the new ones can rapidly give response to the vertical position change and guarantee the stability of ROV depth controlling. It is of obvious importance to actual control of the underwater vehicles’ vertical movement with the help of mathematical optimization method for the controller parameters. The proposed controlling algorithm can be an alternative for other similar working conditions.

Abstract:
In this work, in-depth considerations about FPGA-CPU architectures design methods are presented together with some possible plant applications. FPGAs are used because of their potentials in guaranteeing parallelism, synchronism and high reliability tasks; on the other hand CPUs are crucial to higher precision computations and to reproduce data and results on a graphical interface, thus resulting in an improvement in the human-machine-interface (HMI). Design choices are here reported to justify the benefits from the use of both CPU-FPGA approaches. Taking advantage of these features, the LabVIEW environment and its digital platform is expanded in order to develop a novel tool able to support designers during the fundamental phases of a supervision and control tool realization: from the model development to the digital hardware implementation and testing. LabVIEW is able to communicate with several languages like Matlab or Scilab for a theoretical model study and simulation, and VHDL for a digital implementation, taking the advantages from both development environments. Main results have been reported concerning studies of control systems in nuclear plant facilities, showing how a full-digital platform can be very useful in developing monitoring and control instrumentation. This new tool is thought to improve the so-called hardware in the loop (HIL) simulations and to accelerate the process of prototypes implementation and testing, using a more accurate and reliable environment in terms of performance and safety.
