Abstract:
Libraries today are coping with change and searching for tools to assist them to deal with it, as well as creatingstrategic partnerships with other libraries. Cooperation appears to be the key to library survival. Cooperationefforts vary depending on geographic areas and cultural traditions, but they appear to be present around theworld: on the one hand, nations with strong libraries that are used to strengthen cooperation and sharing haveseen a flourishing of new cooperative initiatives and formal consortia; on the other hand, nations, where thiscollaborative practise was not within their culture, have received a boast towards it. The first libraries wererepositories for the earliest sort of writing, clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in Sumer, some datingback to 2600 BC. These written records mark the end of prehistory and the start of history. In the 1980s, theintroduction of online searching, i.e. digital databases, began to replace the library's print indexes andabstracting reference tools. While expensive and difficult to use, such resources were frequently mediated byhighly skilled librarians to provide broader access to print library materials (at least for the untrained).Although this finding was touted as revolutionary once more, it simply represented a more efficient and effectivemethod of offering basic library services.

Abstract:
Many organisations, including libraries and information centres are struggling to manage their records. Effective management of records ensures the public library’s ability to function effectively and provides documentary evidence of scholars and citizens. Recently, modern technologies such as blockchain, cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT) have increasingly been adopted by various organisations to manage records while other organisations are slow to adopt them. Public libraries are positioning themselves to take this advantage by implementing innovative technologies to manage their records. This study utilised literature review to investigate the application of modern technologies in managing records in public libraries with the view to highlight how these technologies can revolutionise library practices. The study established that although public libraries acknowledge the importance of modern technologies such as blockchain, cloud computing and Internet of Things in managing their records, these technologies are being slowly adopted due to lack of information technology infrastructure, technical support, and knowledge and skills. Therefore, all these challenges made it difficult for librarians and information professionals to maximise the benefits of these technologies and they struggle to see how these technologies can be incorporated into their institutions. Public libraries thus need to better understand best practices for records management, which may go a long way in influencing library policy to support records-management processes. The study recommends that public libraries consider exploring collaborating with other sectors such as archival services to implement modern technologies for the purpose of managing records.

Abstract:
To what extent do academic and research libraries contribute to the work of their mother organizations, i.e. research institutes and universities? What is the role of libraries in scientific research? Which problems do hinder the development of librarianship? These and related questions were in the focus of an analytical study conducted in 2018 by Springer Nature, which sent many questionnaires to the libraries around the world with a supplementary limiting interview of 20 librarians. Some part of the responses was quite predictable, and respondents specified the library problems as lacking money, underestimation of the library services and libraries themselves, toughening requirements of university community, and expanding needs of research teams. The respondents often mentioned new, positive approaches in the work of libraries – support of researchers willing to publishing their papers, building and maintaining repositories, increasing independence of libraries in acquisition process and collection development. The study findings offer some solutions to the dispute about the status of libraries and their prospects, which is held by our reputable experts, e.g. V. K. Stepanov, Yu. N. Stolyarov, etc.

Abstract:
The article examines the formation and development of the library system in Japan. The article analyzes the genesis of Japanese libraries from the oldest to modern libraries. It is noted that the “law on public libraries” proclaims the modern concept of public libraries as free institutions that serve the needs of the community and are funded from the budget. One of its main principles was the freedom of libraries from external pressure and the affirmation of the importance of professional qualifications of librarians. The article also notes that thanks to the rise of industry, it became possible to replenish and improve library collections. It is noted that for several decades now, Japan has deservedly enjoyed fame as a world leader in high technologies. One of the most important post-war developments in Japanese librarianship was the digitization of library resources. Today, the libraries of Japanese prefectures are connected by internet networks with the largest academic and national libraries. The change in the role and purpose of modern libraries affects the library's relationship with society, leads to the transformation of methods and technologies for organizing services, the formation of various types and types of communicative competence, and the ability to constantly improve There is no perfect library system in the world, but every library strives for its own ideal. The advantage of studying the experience of foreign libraries is that it is possible to trace the ways and stages of their development, as well as see errors that can be obtained during transformations.

Abstract:
The authors examine the possibilities of bibliometrics enhancing and complementing information and library processes to support scientific research: applying bibliometric analysis of science organizations’ document flows to monitor publication activities; using bibliometric methods to design and support scientific research in various subjects, and to organize certain library processes, e.g. collection development and user information demand study; and dating ofrelevant information. The authors focus on the bibliometrics fundamental importance for exploring processes of document information flows. They argue that the introduction of bibliometric procedures in scientific libraries would increase their status and make them actors of academic communication system. The examples are given of using bibliometrics for detecting fraud and adulteration schemes in science practice. The key methods and procedures of bibliometric research in scientific libraries are characterized. Main risks due to the introduction of bibliometrics into scientific research are defined. The authors emphasize the scientific libraries’ need for competent librarians which means developing continuous professional education system; within this context workshops and training courses, instructional aids and recommendations, training professionals at universities are also important.

Abstract:
Practical work was the primary method for gaining professional competency as a librarian in Serbia prior to the foundation of formal education. The education level of librarians ranged from a short training to attending of specialized high schools (1948/1987), up to an academic level, which had establishment failures (1963/65, 1980/89) but became readily available since 1991. Today, the study programs for informatics and librarianship grant graduates the initial required competencies for employment in libraries (modern or otherwise), as well as a general readiness for continuous professional development. Employees who are graduates of other sectors will find that the professional exam serves as an extension of qualification for specialized librarian positions. In the 21. Century, the employment structure in Serbia's public libraries has shifted towards the highly-educated (around 45% in Serbia, around 58% in the Zlatibor district, around 95% In Public library Uzice). The constant professional refinement results in competencies which librarians wield to meet the demands of modern customers, and the acceptance of achievements made with non-formal and informal educations results in an increased motivation for participation in these programs.

Abstract:
University libraries have undergone significant changes in recent years, with the advent of new technologies and the increased use of electronic services. These services have revolutionized the way libraries support educational and scientific processes in universities. One of the most important electronic services offered by modern libraries is online access to a wide range of academic journals, books, and other scholarly materials. This allows students and faculty members to access the latest research and information in their fields, regardless of their physical location. Another important electronic service is the use of digital databases, which allow users to search for and access a wide range of information on a variety of topics. These databases can be used for research, writing papers, and other academic projects. In addition to providing access to electronic resources, libraries also offer a wide range of services to support the use of these resources. For example, many libraries have reference librarians who can help users navigate the digital resources and find the information they need. Libraries play an essential role in supporting educational and scientific processes in universities by providing access to a wide range of electronic resources and services. These resources and services include online access to academic journals and books, digital databases, reference assistance. With the evolution of technology, libraries are also adapting and providing services such as e-books, digital library cards, and online library account management. In this article we describe and analyze new digital services which was implemented in Scientific Library of Lviv Polytechnic National University.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the rise of modern Chinese libraries between the1840s and the 1930s in the context of educational reform, intellectual development, national regeneration and state building. It focuses on how educational reform and other factors influenced the way in which modern libraries came into being in China. It argues that the establishment of modern libraries in China was a complicated and long process, as China followed neither the “industrialisation and democracy” model of the United States nor the “modernisation” model of Meiji Japan. Modern libraries were introduced into China in the closing years of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) to facilitate educational reform and national regeneration. The Nationalist government, established in 1928, further stimulated the expansion of Chinese libraries as part of the government’s state building efforts. This thesis examines the Chinese case in the emergence of modern libraries: the case of “underdevelopment” with distinctive Chinese characteristics. To explore the factors that contributed to the underdevelopment of modern Chinese libraries as they emerged, this thesis employs a case study of the Metropolitan Library of Beijing—the predecessor of the National Library of China—between 1909 and 1937 in terms of its formation, early development, and problems. This analysis reveals that both the macro and micro factors conducive to library development were not present in China before the 1920s. Even when the conditions improved during the 1920s and the 1930s, especially during the Nanjing Decade, the development of modern Chinese libraries was far from satisfactory for various reasons, with low library consciousness being an important one. The Conclusion of this thesis outlines the continuing impediment of low library consciousness in China today.

Abstract:
With the purpose to investigate policies within long-term preservation of digital media in the modern world of Open Access institutional repository, this two year's master thesis was conducted through a qualitative study with quantitative overtures. The main objectives of this thesis centre on the criteria for long-term digital preservation, preservation in relation to institutional repositories, the issues cropping up within the field of institutional repositories, and the essential components of a preservation policy. The theoretical framework is constructed around a model based upon scholarly communication, with its aspects of dissemination, acquisition, preservation, discovery and access, and with the facet of preservation at its centre. The methodology of this study is cued to content analysis and its in-depth investigative process, which was conducted on a sample of ten preservation policies within Open Access institutional repositories that were compared to a standardised expert set of policy categorisation. The results show that a perfect preservation policy does not appear to exist in the current world, based exclusively on the selected sample. This gives a strong indication of a need for further research within the field of Open Access institutional repositories preservation policies.<br>I syfte att undersöka policyer inom långsiktigt bevarande av digitala medier i den moderna världen av Open Access institutionella arkiv, genomfördes denna tvååriga masteruppsats genom en kvalitativ studie med kvantitativa uvertyrer.

Abstract:
What did it mean to be a Catholic elite in Protestant England? The relationship between the Protestant crown and its Catholic subjects may be examined fruitfully through a study of an individual and his world. This thesis examines this relationship through the example of Sir Thomas Tresham, who has often been seen as the archetypal Catholic loyalist. It is argued that the notion of Catholic loyalism must be reconfigured to account for the complexities inherent in the relationship between Catholics and the government. The duty to honour the monarch's authority was bound up with social and national sentiment, but it often accompanied criticisms of the practice of that authority, and the ways in which it encroached on personal experience. Intractable tensions lay behind expressions of loyalty, and this thesis travels in these undercurrents of cultural, social, religious, and political conflict to investigate the nuanced relationship between English Catholics and English society. Political resistance as classically understood - actions which directly opposed and undermined government policy - risks the exclusion of culture and identity, through which resistance was redefined. It is argued that Tresham's participation in elite activities became vehicles for resistance in the Catholic context. Book-collecting, reading, and the donation of books to an institutional library are framed as forms of resistance which countered the spirit of government legislation, and provided for the continuation of a robust tradition of Catholic scholarship on English soil. Through artistic and architectural projects, Tresham found ways to participate in elite culture which were not closed off to him, and in which Catholicism and gentility could sit side by side. These activities were also avenues for resistance, whereby the erection of stone testaments to Tresham's faith defied the government's attempts to redefine Englishness and gentility in Protestant terms, to the devastation of Catholicism. These artistic works combined piety, gentility, and resistance, and, together with Tresham's two Catholic libraries, they were to be his legacy.

Abstract:
Because academic libraries are primarily staffed by women and are relatively autonomous entities in colleges and universities, they offer a unique model of workplace gendering and feminism. This qualitative, ethnographic study examined 3 small college libraries in 3 regions of the United States and explored issues of bureaucracy and gendering in these libraries. Feminist challenges to bureaucracy emerged in the areas of hierarchy, division of labor, competition and collaboration, decision-making, and communication. Feminine practice in the libraries reflected private sphere attitudes toward work (values of community, emotionality, and caring) and an affirmation of feminine roles in the workplace. The organizational cultures of these libraries affirmed flexible scheduling, emotions and friendship at work, and parenting talk and behaviors. The library workers also engaged in an ethic of care for library users and colleagues. Individuals in the organizations expressed motivations for work not based in monetary or status gain and endorsed women's power in leadership roles. The gendering of libraries also placed strong masculinity outside of the norm, creating expectations for men to engage in androgynous or feminine behavior. Overall, the study gives voice to feminine and feminist practice in the workplace.

Abstract:
An unusual amount of manuscripts that belonged to the Cathedral library of Lyons in the IXth century has been preserved, among which a number were firsthand used or produced by its prominent intellectual figure, the deacon Florus (floruit ca. 825—855). As we also know several large compilations that were gathered by the very same, Florus represents a rare double opportunity to investigate both a Carolingian cathedral library and the work methods of a Carolingian scholar. Numerous comparisons and crosscheckings can strengthen and supply informations regarding the books that were used and circulated at the time, but also regarding the men that read and circulated them, and clarify how Florus’s work on the Fathers has spread in the manuscript tradition (first part). Such analyses depict Florus as a man of his time, who was educated in a certain environment and to use certain methods; but who was then driven, all along his career, by his own experience and taste, to evolve his own methods in the pursuing of his own projects (second part). A historiography study is also held, which was never undertaken before, and reveals the how and why of Florus’s rediscovery in the XVIIth century, and then again in the XXth. Florus’s part and his work library’s, in the intellectual history and in the history of ancient texts transmission, is thus better circumscribed and more precisely described, as is unvailed the course of his own intellectual evolution

Mhlongo, Siyabonga. "Flexible Packaging Methodologies for Rapid Deployment of Customisable Component-based Digital Libraries." Thesis, University of Cape Town, 2006. http://pubs.cs.uct.ac.za/archive/00000320/.

Full text
Abstract:
Software engineering is a discipline concerned with manufacturing or developing software. Software plays a pivotal role in everyday life, an absence of which will be devastating to a number of governmental, recreational and financial activities, amongst many others. One of the latest branches of software engineering, component-based software engineering, is concerned with the development of software systems using already existing components which speculatively will ensure rapid and inexpensive software development processes. Parallel with the advances in software engineering, the field of digital libraries — a field dealing with Web-based access to and management of structured digital content — has adopted this development model from software engineering to shift focus from developing and using traditionally monolithic software systems to developing and using more flexible component-oriented software systems. Since componentised development approaches are relatively recent, other areas such as packaging and managing component-based software systems still remain unattended to. This dissertation presents research on techniques and methodologies for packaging customisable component-based digital libraries such that deployment is rapid and flexibility is not compromised. Although the reference point of this research was that of component-based digital library systems, it is believed that this research can be generalised across the family of Web-based component-based software systems. An outcome of this research was a prototype packaging system consisting of a pair of tools: a package builder tool and a package installer tool. This packaging system was developed to model the ideas and methodologies that were identified as important to the processes of packaging and installing component-based digital library systems. These tools consequently underwent a user evaluation study whereby they were evaluated for understandability, usability and usefulness to the processes of packaging and installing component-based digital libraries. A key contribution of this research was identifying requirements for a generic component packaging framework. For a component to be seen as ”fit-to-package”, it must posses the following at the very least: the component must be configurable automatically; the component must have a formal description of its dependency software; there must be formal descriptions that describe individual components as well as systems composed of components; and there must be a way whereby installation questions are formally encoded such that components are able to correctly receive configuration information. In totality, this research has shown that component-oriented software development approaches can benefit from an infrastructure which allows for component-based software systems to be composed, distributed and installed effortlessly.

Abstract:
The systems librarian, subject librarian, culture animator, data librarian, data steward… Digitization of libraries, transformation of their users expectations, and evolution of functions performed by libraries resulted in significant changes in the profession of a librarian. Traditional division of librarians into employees of the circulation sections, cataloguing and classification sections, or – following a different classification – teachers librarians, librarians as employees of public or scientific institutions, has been significantly modified and enriched with new professions. The aim of this article is to review the nomenclature of librarian job positions using selected examples, with particular emphasis on research and public libraries. The diversity of nomenclature within the profession demonstrates the transformation that modern librarianship has undergone – and is still undergoing.

Abstract:
The Informational Society has imposed a set of rules on the professionals from various domains but, for the information based librarians, even a broader set of rules applies. Together, the diversification of public services, the hybrid library and the digital literacy contribute to forming new ways of cultivating professional development. Library professionals now have a vast area of attributes to fulfill, having to combine both the traditional librarian tasks with the use of the latest technologies and equipment regarding IT&amp;C, project management, trainings, sociology or STEM. Continuous professional training is one of the attributes of an efficient management. Even since hiring, it is important to correctly identify an employee's skills, evaluate them regularly and add new ones through professional training. Only highly trained librarians can deliver quality services. In this context, knowledge management has a fundamental role. With its help we can create new collective tools for professional development. On the other hand, knowledge is based on learning, therefore, this articles will present the methods through which those concepts can be applied in the Romanian libraries by the use of modern technologies and high quality management of human resources. In this articles, in order to train good specialists in the Information Science, we propose modern e-learning and e-evaluation models and, based on their intrinsic advantages, we have them recommended to our associations and to the Library and Information Science education forms, but also to the library managers. Starting from the existing realities in a library, a plan will be presented which will be based on the identification of the skills and abilities necessary for the modern librarian profession. Certainly, implementing these methods would lead to a greater efficiency in training with much lower costs for institutions.

Abstract:
The goals of this project were to develop essential genomic tools for modern chickpea genetics and genomics research, map the genes and quantitative traits of importance to chickpea production and generate DNA markers that are well-suited for enhanced chickpea germplasm analysis and breeding. To achieve these research goals, we proposed the following research objectives in this period of the project: 1) Develop an ordered BAC library with an average insert size of 150 - 200 kb (USA); 2) Develop 300 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers with an aid of the BAC library (USA); 3) Develop SSR marker tags for Ascochyta response, flowering date and grain weight (USA); 4) Develop a molecular genetic map consisting of at least 200 SSR markers (Israel and USA); 5) Map genes and QTLs most important to chickpea production in the U.S. and Israel: Ascochyta response, flowering and seed set date, grain weight, and grain yield under extreme dryland conditions (Israel); and 6) Determine the genetic correlation between the above four traits (Israel). Chickpea is the third most important pulse crop in the world and ranks the first in the Middle East. Chickpea seeds are a good source of plant protein (12.4-31.5%) and carbohydrates (52.4-70.9%). Although it has been demonstrated in other major crops that the modern genetics and genomics research is essential to enhance our capacity for crop genetic improvement and breeding, little work was pursued in these research areas for chickpea. It was absent in resources, tools and infrastructure that are essential for chickpea genomics and modern genetics research. For instance, there were no large-insert BAC and BIBAC libraries, no sufficient and user- friendly DNA markers, and no intraspecific genetic map. Grain sizes, flowering time and Ascochyta response are three main constraints to chickpea production in drylands. Combination of large seeds, early flowering time and Ascochyta blight resistance is desirable and of significance for further genetic improvement of chickpea. However, it was unknown how many genes and/or loci contribute to each of the traits and what correlations occur among them, making breeders difficult to combine these desirable traits. In this period of the project, we developed the resources, tools and infrastructure that are essential for chickpea genomics and modern genetics research. In particular, we constructed the proposed large-insert BAC library and an additional plant-transformation-competent BIBAC library from an Israeli advanced chickpea cultivar, Hadas. The BAC library contains 30,720 clones and has an average insert size of 151 kb, equivalent to 6.3 x chickpea haploid genomes. The BIBAC library contains 18,432 clones and has an average insert size of 135 kb, equivalent to 3.4 x chickpea haploid genomes. The combined libraries contain 49,152 clones, equivalent to 10.7 x chickpea haploid genomes. We identified all SSR loci-containing clones from the chickpea BAC library, generated sequences for 536 SSR loci from a part of the SSR-containing BACs and developed 310 new SSR markers. From the new SSR markers and selected existing SSR markers, we developed a SSR marker-based molecular genetic map of the chickpea genome. The BAC and BIBAC libraries, SSR markers and the molecular genetic map have provided essential resources and tools for modern genetic and genomic analyses of the chickpea genome. Using the SSR markers and genetic map, we mapped the genes and loci for flowering time and Ascochyta responses; one major QTL and a few minor QTLs have been identified for Ascochyta response and one major QTL has been identified for flowering time. The genetic correlations between flowering time, grain weight and Ascochyta response have been established. These results have provided essential tools and knowledge for effective manipulation and enhanced breeding of the traits in chickpea.

Abstract:
Chickpea is the third most important pulse crop in the world and ranks first in the Middle East; however, it has been subjected to only limited research in modern genomics. In the first period of this project (US-3034-98R) we constructed two large-insert BAC and BIBAC libraries, developed 325 SSR markers and mapped QTLs controlling ascochyta blight resistance (ABR) and days to first flower (DTF). Nevertheless, the utilities of these tools and results in gene discovery and marker-assisted breeding are limited due to the absence of an essential platform. The goals of this period of the project were to use the resources and tools developed in the first period of the project to develop a BAC/BIBAC physical map for chickpea and using it to identify BAC/BIBACcontigs containing agronomic genes of interest, with an emphasis on ABR and DTF, and develop DNA markers suitable for marker-assisted breeding. Toward these goals, we proposed: 1) Fingerprint ~50,000 (10x) BACs from the BAC and BIBAC libraries, assemble the clones into a genome-wide BAC/BIBAC physical map, and integrate the BAC/BIBAC map with the existing chickpea genetic maps (Zhang, USA); 2) fine-map ABR and DTFQTLs and enhance molecular tools for chickpea genetics and breeding (Shahal, Sherman and DaniShtienberg, Israel; Chen and Muehlbauer; USA); and 3) integrate the BAC/BIBAC map with the existing chickpea genetic maps (Sherman, Israel; Zhang and Chen, USA). For these objectives, a total of $460,000 was requested originally, but a total of $300,000 was awarded to the project. We first developed two new BAC and BIBAC libraries, Chickpea-CME and Chickpea- CHV. The chickpea-CMEBAC library contains 22,272 clones, with an average insert size of 130 kb and equivalent to 4.0 fold of the chickpea genome. The chickpea-CHVBIBAC library contains 38,400 clones, with an average insert size of 140 kb and equivalent to 7.5 fold of the chickpea genome. The two new libraries (11.5 x), along with the two BAC (Chickpea-CHI) and BIBAC (Chickpea-CBV) libraries (7.1 x) constructed in the first period of the project, provide libraries essential for chickpea genome physical mapping and many other genomics researches. Using these four libraries we then developed the proposed BAC/BIBAC physical map of chickpea. A total of 67,584 clones were fingerprinted, and 64,211 (~11.6 x) of the fingerprints validated and used in the physical map assembly. The physical map consists of 1,945 BAC/BIBACcontigs, with each containing an average of 39.2 clones and having an average physical length of 559 kb. The contigs collectively span ~1,088 Mb, being 1.49 fold of the 740- Mb chickpea genome. Third, we integrated the physical map with the two existing chickpea genetic maps using a total of 172 (124 + 48) SSR markers. Fourth, we identified tightly linked markers for ABR-QTL1, increased marker density at ABR-QTL2 and studied the genetic basis of resistance to pod abortion, a major problem in the east Mediterranean, caused by heat stress. Finally, we, using the integrated map, isolated the BAC/BIBACcontigs containing or closely linked to QTL4.1, QTL4.2 and QTL8 for ABR and QTL8 for DTF. The integrated BAC/BIBAC map resulted from the project will provide a powerful platform and tools essential for many aspects of advanced genomics and genetics research of this crop and related species. These includes, but are not limited to, targeted development of SNP, InDel and SSR markers, high-resolution mapping of the chickpea genome and its agronomic genes and QTLs, sequencing and decoding of all genes of the genome using the next-generation sequencing technology, and comparative genome analysis of chickpea versus other legumes. The DNA markers and BAC/BIBACcontigs containing or closely linked to ABR and DTF provide essential tools to develop SSR and SNP markers well-suited for marker-assisted breeding of the traits and clone their corresponding genes. The development of the tools and knowledge will thus promote enhanced and substantial genetic improvement of the crop and related legumes.

Abstract:
The author of the study analyzes and determines the features of the introduction of new forms of education in the highest historical pedagogical institutions of Ukraine in the early twentieth century. In particular: colloquiums, excursions, rehearsals, the organization of scientific sections of students and societies. Colloquiums were held to discuss the creative work of students. Proseminars prepared students for participation in seminars. Excursions prepared students for scientific work and taught them to collect information about historical monuments. Interviews and rehearsals took an important place in the revitalization of academic activity of students in universities. During the interviews, students learned to express their thoughts freely. Rehearsals were used as a means of monitoring the progress of students. An important component of the preparation of the future teacher of history was the organization of scientific student sections and societies. The main forms of their work were: the discussion of scientific reports, the publication of periodicals, the creation of libraries, museums, etc. The most talented students took part in scientific sections and societies. Thus, higher education institutions created prerequisites for the education of gifted young people. The publication also reveals the specifics of the practical training of students. The practical component included not only pedagogical, but also museum practice. In addition, pedagogical institutions of higher education conducted educational excursions, literary and musical evenings, organized social, sanitary and charitable activities. The author of the publication not only explores the features of various forms of education, but also the possibility of using them in the practice of the modern higher pedagogical institution in Ukraine.

Abstract:
The Association of Research Libraries (ARL)/Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) Joint Task Force on Research Data Services formed in 2020 with a two-fold purpose: (1) to demonstrate and commit to the roles research libraries have in stewarding research data and as part of institution-wide research support services and (2) to guide the development of resources for the ARL and CARL memberships in advancing their organizations as collaborative partners with respect to research data services in the context of FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data principles and the US National Academies’ Open Science by Design framework. Research libraries will be successful in meeting these objectives if they act collectively and are deeply engaged with disciplinary communities. The task force formed three working groups of data practitioners, representing a wealth of expertise, to research the institutional landscape and policy environment in both the US and Canada. This report presents the task force’s recommendations for the roles of research libraries with regard to research data principles, policies, and approaches to managing research data. The report also offers strategies for discipline-specific research data approaches, priorities for automation of processes, economic models to scale and sustain shared resources, prioritization of research data to steward, and decision-making rubrics.
