Abstract:
This thesis examines the rise of modern Chinese libraries between the1840s and the 1930s in the context of educational reform, intellectual development, national regeneration and state building. It focuses on how educational reform and other factors influenced the way in which modern libraries came into being in China. It argues that the establishment of modern libraries in China was a complicated and long process, as China followed neither the “industrialisation and democracy” model of the United States nor the “modernisation” model of Meiji Japan. Modern libraries were introduced into China in the closing years of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) to facilitate educational reform and national regeneration. The Nationalist government, established in 1928, further stimulated the expansion of Chinese libraries as part of the government’s state building efforts. This thesis examines the Chinese case in the emergence of modern libraries: the case of “underdevelopment” with distinctive Chinese characteristics. To explore the factors that contributed to the underdevelopment of modern Chinese libraries as they emerged, this thesis employs a case study of the Metropolitan Library of Beijing—the predecessor of the National Library of China—between 1909 and 1937 in terms of its formation, early development, and problems. This analysis reveals that both the macro and micro factors conducive to library development were not present in China before the 1920s. Even when the conditions improved during the 1920s and the 1930s, especially during the Nanjing Decade, the development of modern Chinese libraries was far from satisfactory for various reasons, with low library consciousness being an important one. The Conclusion of this thesis outlines the continuing impediment of low library consciousness in China today.

Abstract:
With the purpose to investigate policies within long-term preservation of digital media in the modern world of Open Access institutional repository, this two year's master thesis was conducted through a qualitative study with quantitative overtures. The main objectives of this thesis centre on the criteria for long-term digital preservation, preservation in relation to institutional repositories, the issues cropping up within the field of institutional repositories, and the essential components of a preservation policy. The theoretical framework is constructed around a model based upon scholarly communication, with its aspects of dissemination, acquisition, preservation, discovery and access, and with the facet of preservation at its centre. The methodology of this study is cued to content analysis and its in-depth investigative process, which was conducted on a sample of ten preservation policies within Open Access institutional repositories that were compared to a standardised expert set of policy categorisation. The results show that a perfect preservation policy does not appear to exist in the current world, based exclusively on the selected sample. This gives a strong indication of a need for further research within the field of Open Access institutional repositories preservation policies.<br>I syfte att undersöka policyer inom långsiktigt bevarande av digitala medier i den moderna världen av Open Access institutionella arkiv, genomfördes denna tvååriga masteruppsats genom en kvalitativ studie med kvantitativa uvertyrer.

Abstract:
What did it mean to be a Catholic elite in Protestant England? The relationship between the Protestant crown and its Catholic subjects may be examined fruitfully through a study of an individual and his world. This thesis examines this relationship through the example of Sir Thomas Tresham, who has often been seen as the archetypal Catholic loyalist. It is argued that the notion of Catholic loyalism must be reconfigured to account for the complexities inherent in the relationship between Catholics and the government. The duty to honour the monarch's authority was bound up with social and national sentiment, but it often accompanied criticisms of the practice of that authority, and the ways in which it encroached on personal experience. Intractable tensions lay behind expressions of loyalty, and this thesis travels in these undercurrents of cultural, social, religious, and political conflict to investigate the nuanced relationship between English Catholics and English society. Political resistance as classically understood - actions which directly opposed and undermined government policy - risks the exclusion of culture and identity, through which resistance was redefined. It is argued that Tresham's participation in elite activities became vehicles for resistance in the Catholic context. Book-collecting, reading, and the donation of books to an institutional library are framed as forms of resistance which countered the spirit of government legislation, and provided for the continuation of a robust tradition of Catholic scholarship on English soil. Through artistic and architectural projects, Tresham found ways to participate in elite culture which were not closed off to him, and in which Catholicism and gentility could sit side by side. These activities were also avenues for resistance, whereby the erection of stone testaments to Tresham's faith defied the government's attempts to redefine Englishness and gentility in Protestant terms, to the devastation of Catholicism. These artistic works combined piety, gentility, and resistance, and, together with Tresham's two Catholic libraries, they were to be his legacy.

Abstract:
Because academic libraries are primarily staffed by women and are relatively autonomous entities in colleges and universities, they offer a unique model of workplace gendering and feminism. This qualitative, ethnographic study examined 3 small college libraries in 3 regions of the United States and explored issues of bureaucracy and gendering in these libraries. Feminist challenges to bureaucracy emerged in the areas of hierarchy, division of labor, competition and collaboration, decision-making, and communication. Feminine practice in the libraries reflected private sphere attitudes toward work (values of community, emotionality, and caring) and an affirmation of feminine roles in the workplace. The organizational cultures of these libraries affirmed flexible scheduling, emotions and friendship at work, and parenting talk and behaviors. The library workers also engaged in an ethic of care for library users and colleagues. Individuals in the organizations expressed motivations for work not based in monetary or status gain and endorsed women's power in leadership roles. The gendering of libraries also placed strong masculinity outside of the norm, creating expectations for men to engage in androgynous or feminine behavior. Overall, the study gives voice to feminine and feminist practice in the workplace.

Abstract:
An unusual amount of manuscripts that belonged to the Cathedral library of Lyons in the IXth century has been preserved, among which a number were firsthand used or produced by its prominent intellectual figure, the deacon Florus (floruit ca. 825—855). As we also know several large compilations that were gathered by the very same, Florus represents a rare double opportunity to investigate both a Carolingian cathedral library and the work methods of a Carolingian scholar. Numerous comparisons and crosscheckings can strengthen and supply informations regarding the books that were used and circulated at the time, but also regarding the men that read and circulated them, and clarify how Florus’s work on the Fathers has spread in the manuscript tradition (first part). Such analyses depict Florus as a man of his time, who was educated in a certain environment and to use certain methods; but who was then driven, all along his career, by his own experience and taste, to evolve his own methods in the pursuing of his own projects (second part). A historiography study is also held, which was never undertaken before, and reveals the how and why of Florus’s rediscovery in the XVIIth century, and then again in the XXth. Florus’s part and his work library’s, in the intellectual history and in the history of ancient texts transmission, is thus better circumscribed and more precisely described, as is unvailed the course of his own intellectual evolution

Mhlongo, Siyabonga. "Flexible Packaging Methodologies for Rapid Deployment of Customisable Component-based Digital Libraries." Thesis, University of Cape Town, 2006. http://pubs.cs.uct.ac.za/archive/00000320/.

Abstract:
Software engineering is a discipline concerned with manufacturing or developing software. Software plays a pivotal role in everyday life, an absence of which will be devastating to a number of governmental, recreational and financial activities, amongst many others. One of the latest branches of software engineering, component-based software engineering, is concerned with the development of software systems using already existing components which speculatively will ensure rapid and inexpensive software development processes. Parallel with the advances in software engineering, the field of digital libraries — a field dealing with Web-based access to and management of structured digital content — has adopted this development model from software engineering to shift focus from developing and using traditionally monolithic software systems to developing and using more flexible component-oriented software systems. Since componentised development approaches are relatively recent, other areas such as packaging and managing component-based software systems still remain unattended to. This dissertation presents research on techniques and methodologies for packaging customisable component-based digital libraries such that deployment is rapid and flexibility is not compromised. Although the reference point of this research was that of component-based digital library systems, it is believed that this research can be generalised across the family of Web-based component-based software systems. An outcome of this research was a prototype packaging system consisting of a pair of tools: a package builder tool and a package installer tool. This packaging system was developed to model the ideas and methodologies that were identified as important to the processes of packaging and installing component-based digital library systems. These tools consequently underwent a user evaluation study whereby they were evaluated for understandability, usability and usefulness to the processes of packaging and installing component-based digital libraries. A key contribution of this research was identifying requirements for a generic component packaging framework. For a component to be seen as ”fit-to-package”, it must posses the following at the very least: the component must be configurable automatically; the component must have a formal description of its dependency software; there must be formal descriptions that describe individual components as well as systems composed of components; and there must be a way whereby installation questions are formally encoded such that components are able to correctly receive configuration information. In totality, this research has shown that component-oriented software development approaches can benefit from an infrastructure which allows for component-based software systems to be composed, distributed and installed effortlessly.

Abstract:
”The modern library in the network society” A study of cultural politicians and librarians opinions about libraries' use of social media Social media is becoming more and more interacted in our daily lives and Carlsson (2013) argues that today's libraries have undergone major challenges in the digital information technology's entry in the library arena. The new technology has led to sum up in one question: how a library should relate to the digital information technology, the issue has applied in particular the social communications media, such as Facebook, Twitter and more. The purpose of this paper is to examine the culture of politicians and librarians 'perceptions of public libraries' use of social media linked to the libraries and their democracy promotion efforts. This is analyzed from Castells theories about the network society and the digital divide. In summary, the study concluded that the majority of the culture politicians and librarians believe that social media is a part of the future of the library. But they have different views on how to get there, cultural politicians describe the ideas for the library and the use of social media more visionary, while the librarians descriptions are more closely with the business. The possibility of dual communication instead of one-way communication took many respondents as an important part of the library's presence on social media. The importance of the library's democracy promotion efforts to reach out to everyone even those as defined by or at risk of falling into the digital divide is also discussed in the study.

Orsi, Maia. "Population synthesis models for IMF studies." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2014. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4525/.

Full text
Abstract:
Population synthesis models (PSMs) are fundamental tools to study the star formation history and IMF of unresolved stellar populations using spectral features. This work presents a new set of PSMs constructed using theoretical isochrones and two state-ofthe- art synthetic spectral libraries. The BT-Settl and Munari libraries were chosen for their ability to predict the observed values of Lick-type and IMF-sensitive indices in individual stars of the solar neighbourhood. The BT-Settl library was used to sample the cool main sequence stars and the Munari library for the rest of the evolutionary phases. The PSMs cover a range of metallicities with [Fe/H]= 0, -1.31 and -1.81 for scaled-solar and α-enhanced metal mixtures. The models were used to study the behaviour of the IMF indices defined in the literature and the results are in good agreement with what other PSMs have determined. The PSMs in this work predict a strong degeneracy between age, metallicity and IMF. I used the models to study which are the main evolutionary phases contributing to each IMF-sensitive index and found that most indices reach their final integrated values before the turn off. The post-main sequence stars contribute mainly to the continuum of these bands. Uncertainties in the the effective temperature of the isochrones can affect IMF estimates. The PSMs were applied to extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) and early-type galaxies (ETGs) using data from the literature. I determined the ages, metallicities and IMFs of these systems using index combinations in the optical and infrared. I explored how the morphology of the Horizontal Branch (HB) and dynamical evolution (which are key uncertainties in the modelling of GCs) can affect the IMF predictions. In a population with a Milky Way IMF, dynamical evolution can make the IMF indices mimic a bottom-light IMF. HB morphology has no impact on the IMF estimates at low [Fe/H]. In the IMF index-index diagrams for GCs, the results are significantly affected by the unknown sodium abundances of these systems. Using the PSMs in this work the best index combination to determine the IMF is CaH1 and TiO2. The ETGs and the [Fe/H]=0 GCs appear to have a bottom-heavy IMF with x ~ 3:0. These results are discussed in the work.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is that of contributing to improve the knowledge of the cultural history of Sardinia, with a particular focus on book circulation during a time of great intellectual, political and social change, such as the end of the XV and VI Century. Through the analysis of notary deeds, and particularly post mortem inventories, the first part of the study has reconstructed the structure and content of sixty-two private libraries, ten belonging to Church representatives, seven to lawyers, four to doctors or other categories related to public health, ten to women, seven to aricstocratic families and seven to other categories. The total number of volumes in this census exceeds 5000 units, while the different authors come up to almost 1260. In a number of cases the analysis conducted has allowed the investigator to outline brief biographical profiles, reconstructing family and professional relations as well as to bring to light the cultural context whereby Sardinian society evolved in those years. The second part of the dissertation has been devoted to the editorial production of the city of Cagliari between 1566 and 1600, with an emphasis on technical aspects of the typographic processes as well as on the circulation of the editions produced. Starting from 190 items and from archival sources, 86 editions have been described, 68 of which of secure identification and 18 for which ownership is probable or possible, two loose papers, which still today represents the only prove of draft printing.

Abstract:
DNA-encoded chemical libraries (DEL) allows an exhaustive chemical space sampling with a large-scale data consisting of compounds produced through combinatorial synthesis. This novel technology was utilized in the early drug discovery stages for robust hit identification and lead optimization. In this project, the aim was to build a Machine Learning- based QSAR model with conformal prediction for hit identification on two different target proteins, the DEL was assayed on. An initial investigation was conducted on a pilot project with 1000 compounds and the analyses and the conclusions drawn from this part were later applied to a larger dataset with 1.2 million compounds. With this classification model, the prediction of the compound activity in the DEL as well as in an external dataset was aimed to be analyzed with identification of the top hits to evaluate model’s performance and applicability. Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) models were built on both the pilot and the main datasets with different descriptor sets of Signature Fingerprints, RDKIT and CDK. In addition, an Autoencoder was used to supply data-driven descriptors on the pilot data as well. The Libsvm and the Liblinear implementations were explored and compared based on the models’ performances. The comparisons were made by considering the key concepts of conformal prediction such as the trade-off between validity and efficiency, observed fuzziness and the calibration against a range of significance levels. The top hits were determined by two sorting methods, credibility and p-value differences between the binary classes. The assignment of correct single-labels to the true actives over a wide range of significance levels regardless of the similarity of the test compounds to the training set was confirmed for the models. Furthermore, an accumulation of these true actives in the models’ top hit selections was observed according to the latter sorting method and additional investigations on the similarity and the building block enrichments in the top 50 and 100 compounds were conducted. The Tanimoto similarity demonstrated the model’s predictive power in selecting structurally dissimilar compounds while the building block enrichment analysis showed the selectivity of the binding pocket where the target protein B was determined to be more selective. All of these comparison methods enabled an extensive study on the model evaluation and performance. In conclusion, the Liblinear model with the Signature Fingerprints was concluded to give the best model performance for both the pilot and the main datasets with the considerations of the model performances and the computational power requirements. However, an external set prediction was not successful due to the low structural diversity in the DEL which the model was trained on.

Johansen, Michelle. "The public librarian in modern London (1890-1914) : the case of Charles Goss at the Bishopsgate Institute." Thesis, University of East London, 2006. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3404/.

Full text
Abstract:
Charles Goss (1864-1946) was one among the pioneering set of librarians in charge of London's first wave of public libraries in the 1890s and early 1900s. He was chief librarian of Lewisham rate-assisted library in south-east London from 1891 until 1897 when he moved to the Bishopsgate Institute, a charitable library and cultural institution situated on the border of the City and the East End. Goss remained in charge at the Institute until 1941. In 1895, he co-founded the Society of Public Librarians (SPL), a group of thirty-plus London Chief and Deputy Public Librarians who met monthly until 1930 to discuss professional issues and offer mutual support and friendship. Using the writings of Goss, the SPL archive, public library records and library journals, this thesis describes the occupational experience of this set of librarians. It also examines their treatment in the secondary material on public library development. Because of their stance during an intraprofessional dispute over how readers should access the material on the library shelves (the socalled open access debates), Goss and his SPL colleagues have been marginalised in library historiography. The thesis revisits and assesses their standpoint during the open access contest. It then uses their professional experience as a means of accessing wider historical debates around social class and identity. According to profession and income, this group of men were lower-middle class. Expressed more precisely, however, Goss and his SPL colleagues were at the mid-point of a journey from the working to the middle class. The thesis attends to the duality of their class location. Informed by the occupational identity they collectively favoured, it provides a nuanced assessment of 'lower middle', an assessment which accommodates elements of working-class comradeship and modes of expression alongside the middle-class attributes more usually associated with this subaltern class fraction.

Abstract:
Based on an epistemological reflection, the digital library is conceptually elucidated and a model of national character is projected. To reaffirm this initiative, the most relevant projects that gave rise to the digital libraries in the USA and Europe, as well as the research and development accomplished by the International Federation of Digital Libraries, will be taken into consideration and studied. Based on these studies, there will be a review to determine the potential that Colombia has to support the project including a study of state policies and institutional resources in the fields of information systems, public and private telecommunications systems, and the people with the ability to access the services of a digital library of national character. Subsequently the user of a digital library is characterized and the relationship between the user and the technological components is typified, analyzing how the user acts and participates in this capacity. All the above arguments contribute elements to define what sort of library should be set up, its intent, its goals, and the strategic directions for its development, which are complemented by the formulation of the vision, mission and scope of the same. Based on the comparison of different national digital libraries in America and Europe, particularly the Virtual Library Miguel de Cervantes, the foundation for the organizational model of the Digital Library of Colombia is provided, set to comply with Colombian legislation and the administrative models of public and private entities. The organizational structure proposed is that of a Foundation, describing government bodies, operational components, and the required internal administrative and technical configuration. The study of the technological component of the library will be determined after the fulfillment of all legal and administrative requirements, starting with the system's architecture and basing the decision on four studies: 1) conceptualization of the system's architecture; 2) to define the model of the system's architecture; 3) selecting the application software; and 4) proposing the logical and physical model of the platform and the associated software for scanning documents. After the technological platform of the system's architecture is known, there will be a study of what potential collections will compose the library, using the National Library of Colombia, of which there is an analysis and detailed description, as its basic collection. Subsequently, a study will be conducted to determine the relationships between user-environments-services, and based on Web sites of leading digital libraries in the world, a set of potential services will be proposed. The procedures and rules, as well as the macro processes of the digital library, will be defined and described, taking into consideration that the technical organization of digital libraries is founded on procedures and rules of international character. Finally, the participatory national system, which is the exogenous component of the Digital Library of Colombia, is proposed in the structure and operation of the library; the development of the system is currently at the preliminary design level, since its implementation and operation is subject to the fulfillment of the stages of creation, organization and operation of the library, and in particular issues relating to the services, the collections' policies, the system's architecture, and the adoption of procedures and standards.

In March 2020, the Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University found itself in the same position as most academic libraries across the country: making a rapid shift from a face-to-face model of service to an online model. All classes moved online and all employees worked remotely. Join Sherrod instruction librarians as we discuss how we maneuvered through this shift and came out the other end with a more robust model of service and a new perspective. Participants will come away with tips for establishing an online service model from the ground up as well as tools for assessment and collaboration.

Abstract:
The aim of the research was to develop a training course that inculcated infonnation literacy that could be implemented by staff at the University of Dar es Salaam library (Tanzania), in order to provide students with appropriate infonnation literacy skills to meet their educational goals. The course was developed from an integration of knowledge from infonnation behaviour research and educational theory with current perspectives of infonnation literacy from Infonnation and Library Science (ILS). The ultimate goal of the research was to create a framework that would be used by public university libraries in Tanzania to teach infonnation literacy courses. The study was carried out in two parts. In the first implementation "pilot" programme, the course was tested by involving librarians who took the entire course, in order to see whether the same course structure could be used to implement to the Masters of Education students. Following adaptations made on the first course, a second course programme was implemented to Masters of Education students by two librarians who attended the first implementation "pilot" programme. Therefore, the success of the course was partly judged on whether it effectively enabled knowledge transfer from the librarians to students. Data collection methods were predominantly qualitative, although quantitative methods in tenns of diagnostic tests were also used. The tests were used to evaluate trainees' knowledge ofinfonnation literacy before and after the course to provide an indication of changes in knowledge. Qualitative methods used included semistructured interviews with librarians and academic staff at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania in order to make sure that assumptions made about students' knowledge of infonnation literacy and the kind of problems experienced by students were correct. Other methods included quizzes, exercises, group reflection and presentations that related to each stage in the course. These methods served to indicate trainees' understanding of what was taught, reflections on the leaming process and provided feedback for improvements on the course. The major findings showed that there was a recognized need for infonnation literacy and that problems such as unfamiliarity with categories of infonnation sources, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and use, were experienced in Tanzania as was the case in other "Western" countries. In addition, librarians were able to transfer skills learned to students, who in turn used the same course materials to teach fellow students who did not participate in the course. Furthermore, the design of the course was facilitated by the integration of Information and library science (ILS) approaches to information literacy with the knowledge of information behaviour and pedagogic theory. The thesis provides recommendations for the library and information curricula to introduce information literacy, teaching information literacy in a holistic way and with librarians participating in teaching and research. In addition, the study recommended that librarians should facilitate the development of information literacy in primary and secondary schools.

Abstract:
Polygonal meshes are a common way of representing 3D surface models in many different areas of computer graphics and geometry processing. However, these models are becoming more and more complex which increases the cost of processing these models. In order to reduce this cost, mesh simplification algorithms are developed. Another important property of a polygonal mesh model is that whether it is regular or not. Regular meshes have many advantages over the irregular ones in terms of memory requirements, efficient processing, rendering etc. In this thesis work, both mesh simplification and regular remeshing algorithms are studied. Moreover, some of the popular mesh libraries are compared with respect to their approaches and performance to the mesh simplification. In addition, mesh models with disk topology are remeshed and converted to regular ones.

Abstract:
The role of information technology as a critical agent of change in public library information services, in the environment of infornation society, is studied, considering the redefinition of libraries social functions and services. First of all, it's presents a terminological survey of modern libraries trends (digital library, electronic library, virtual library, hybrid library). Hybrid library is selected as a valid conceptual framework for this work: library services in digital context. Library automation and technologies concepts and applications are reviewed, focusing in library systems, which match into a classic model of library automation. Information retrieval and public information features (Opac) are studied in-depth, in order to compare it with recent development in the information market for libraries and significant digital ibraries projects. The strategic role of information technologies management is presented as a requirement for understanding the complex interrelation between services and technologies. It's also analysed the two technological context that have a greater potential of influence in library systems: In one hand the Groupware and Workflow, and in the aher hand internet virtual communities and portals. Also is described the different points of view about digital information systems architecture, introducing the concept of Net-Library, as an organizational view of libraries in interaction inside an infomation and social environment. A new conceptual framework of library systems is defined, with extended functionalities derived of social and technological changes about information services, denominated Extended Library System. It's structured in two leve ls: application and product. The first level describes the modules of an library management and infonnation system application. The second one is dedicated to fue public information project requirements of a library portal. Finally it presents structured indicators to evaluate extended automation, as well as elements to model hybrid libraries information technologies project

Abstract:
The Reference Service in public libraries in Portugal. Development model from international guidelines. Incorporating in its organization, procedures and communication with the users a set of tools brought by technology, Reference Service (RS) plays a key role in the struggle against inequality and digital illiteracy, promoting information literacy and creating knowledge. The perception of the value of RS and the weaknesses in public libraries in Portugal raise the question on how to contribute to its development. In order to build RS foundations on an evolutionary perspective, this research analyzes RUSA / ALA (Reference and User Services Association / American Library Association) and IFLA (International Federation of Library Association) international guidelines and the structural characteristics of the Portuguese National Public Library Network (RNBP), with the objective of creating a solution for the development of that service to be applied to this reality. Following an inductive comprehensive paradigm, with an orientation based on Grounded Theory, this research focuses on the context of discovery and the construction of a theory. Empirically it fulfils complementary qualitative and quantitative techniques, using a methodological triangulation. The field of analysis covers Portuguese public libraries integrating the RNBP. Aiming at functional and material aspects, direct observation techniques and a survey by questionnaire are applied. Targeting social aspects, six semistructured interviews are carried out. The results point to a situation of stagnation in the RNBP as well as the unstructured and informal performance of the SR, which justifies the need for evolution and investment. A model is constructed, following a strategy based on levels, flexible and adaptable to the needs and resources of each library, with the perspective of an incremental and consistent development of this service.

Silvello, Gianmaria. "A Set-Based Approach to Deal with Hierarchical Structures." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3425324.

Full text
Abstract:
Hierarchical structures are pervasive in computer science because they are a fundamental means for modeling many aspects of reality and for representing and managing a wide corpus of data and digital resources. One of the most important hierarchical structures is the tree, which has been widely studied, analyzed and adopted in several contexts and scientific fields over time. Our work takes into major consideration the role and impact of the tree in computer science and investigates its applications starting from the following pivotal question: "Is the tree always the most advantageous choice for modeling, representing and managing hierarchies?" Our aim is to analyze the nature and use of hierarchical structures and determine the most suitable way of employing them in different contexts of interests. We concentrate our work mainly on the scientific field of Digital Libraries. Digital Libraries are the compound and complex systems which manage digital resources from our cultural heritage – belonging to different cultural organizations such as libraries, archives and museums – and which provide advanced services over these digital resources. In particular, we point out a focal use case within this scientific field based on the modeling, representation, management and exchange of archival resources in a distributed environment. We take into consideration the hierarchical inner structure of archives by considering the solutions proposed in the literature for modeling, representing, managing and sharing the archival resources. Archives are usually modeled by means of a tree structure; furthermore, the standard de facto for digital encoding of digital cultural resources – described and represented by means of metadata – is the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) that supports a tree representation. The problem often affecting this approach is that the model used to represent the hierarchies is bounded by the specific technology of choice adopted for its instantiation – e.g. the XML. In the archival context the tree structure is commonly instantiated by means of a unique XML file which mixes up the hierarchical structure elements with the content elements, without a clear distinction between the two; it is then not straightforward to determine how to access and exchange a specific subset of data without navigating the whole hierarchy or without losing meaningful hierarchical relationships. To address the problems exemplified in the previous scenario we propose the NEsted SeT for Object hieRarchies (NESTOR) Framework which is composed of two main components: the NESTOR Model and the NESTOR Prototype. The NESTOR Model is the core of the NESTOR Framework because it defines the set data models on which every component of the framework relies. It defines two set data models that we have called the "Nested Set Model (NS-M)" and the "Inverse Nested Set Model (INS-M)". We formally define these two set data models by showing how we can model and represent hierarchies throughout collections of nested sets. We show how these models add some features with respect to the tree while maintaining its full expressive power. We formally prove several properties of these models and show the correspondences with the tree. Furthermore, we define four distance measures for the the NS-M and the INS-M and we prove them to be metric spaces. The NESTOR Model is presented from a formal point-of-view and then envisioned in a practical application context defined by the NESTOR Prototype. In order to describe the prototype we rely on the archive use case, and propose an application for modeling, representing, managing and sharing of archival resources. The expressive power of the archive modeled by means of a tree and the set data models are compared. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of our approach when data management and exchange in distributed environments have to be faced. We provide a concrete implementation of the described models in the context of the informative system called SIAR (Sistema Informativo Archivistico Regionale) that we designed and developed for the management of the archival resources of the Italian Veneto Region. Furthermore, we show how the NESTOR Framework can be used in conjunction with well-established and widely-used Digital Libraries technological advances.<br>Le strutture gerarchiche sono largamente utilizzate in informatica in quanto mezzi fondamentali per modellare molti aspetti della realtà e per rappresentare nonché gestire una grande varietà di dati e risorse digitali.

Full text
Abstract:
The hypothesis in this thesis is that the use of software agents can improve the processes involved in the management of interlibrary loan (ILL) in Spanish university libraries.   The thesis have two main objectives: first, to analyze the processes involved in the management of ILL, comparing the Spanish model with international standards; second, to analyze the functionality of software agents in the field of libraries, assessing their feasibility and performance in the management of ILL, in order to ascertain its usefulness.   To achieve these objectives, two types of methodologies are applied: on the one hand a review of current literature and standards, and on the other an experimental methodology based on observation of the performance of computer agents in the management of ILL transactions. The use of three types of agents have been studied: agents that enable verification of administrative and bibliographic data of the requests, search agents who complete bibliographic references to minimize errors in the subsequent localization, and agents for synchronization status of requests from different ILL management systems. The tests for this compatibility have been tested among Spanish university libraries using GTBib ILL system and OCLC WorldShare integrated LMS.   As results of the literature and standards review we have profiled the characteristics and idiosyncrasies of the Spanish universities ILL model, in comparison to other countries like the US or UK. While in Spain a decentralized model prevails, in which each university library has its own management program (GTbib the prevalent one, with a 95% share), in other countries predominate centralized models, associated in most cases with a union catalog, as it is the case with OCLC in the US, or in other cases like UK where the model is based in a huge lending library and document supply center such as the British Library.   The results obtained after applying agents to ILL management systems have been very useful for some reasons: agents perform tasks efficiently and that improves the overall performance, with a reduced process time for the requests. That at the end gives to the user and the librarians a greater satisfaction and a timely control of the process.

This study focuses on access to information by people with disabilities in university libraries, specifically in the library system of the Federal University of Bahia (SIBI/UFBA). The objective is to investigate the mediating role performed by these libraries and professional librarians who work in them. The research was based on the significant absence of these users in libraries and has been engaged in the observation of the service given by Service Reference (SR) of two libraries: Reitor Macedo Costa University Library and University Library of Health. The theoretical foundation came from Disability Studies, formulated by British theorists of the 1960s, whose concepts have structured the movement for the rights of people with disabilities, intensified worldwide. Displays the Social Model of Disability, as well as the historical aspects related to the disability, addressing issues of preconception, segregation and human rights. Also addresses the concept of mediation of information, the importance of the SR and practice related to information literacy, of librarians. We conducted a exploratory research, in order to know the relationship that the university library has with its users with disabilities to contribute to the improvement of this service. We used the interview as an instrument of data collection, considering not only the sample size, but also the subjective characteristics of the questions, which show the essentially qualitative nature of the research. Results were obtained by analyzing the responses of two groups of librarians SIBI/UFBA: the first formed by the managers and the second by librarians who work in SR. These results confirmed the initial assumptions of the research, noting the absence of users with disabilities in libraries and also the lack of institutional policies focused on serving these people in the SIBI/UFBA libraries. The results also point to the need for further discussion on disability and on mediation aimed at these users. It is suggested that changes in the education of librarians are needed, in addition to the development of policies and actions by the SIBI / UFBA, enabling closer approach to that specific public.

This work performs social network analysis of the scientific collaborations extracted from bibliographic data bases. Их реализация предусматривает выполнение комплекса задач: от модернизации системы управления библиотекой и построения библиотечного портала до развития адвокационной деятельности, краудсорсинга и формирования системы критериального измерения результатов внедрения новой коммуникационной модели.<br>EN: ABSTRACT The thesis deals with the establishment of progress tendencies of communicative models of higher educational institution libraries’ activity under the influence of informatization. Conditions of forming of new models in libraries’ communicative activity are characterized. The peculiarities of such models consist in possibility of unification of linear and unlinear presenting of information. It is investigated in the process of evolution the linear (documentary and communication level) communication model of higher educational institution libraries’ activity changes to interactive (information and communication level), and further – to integral (cognitive and communicative level). It is proved that the use of unlinear communication models increases the possibility of qualitative changes in the continuous changes of the parameters of the higher educational institution libraries’ activity and information space of education and science. The state is considered and periods of university libraries informatization in Ukraine are specified. The reasonable application of the communication model of a particular library activity in different periods of their informatization is proved.<br>Харківська державна академія культури

Abstract:
博士<br>中興大學<br>歷史學系所<br>103<br>Libraries are the product of civilization from thousands of years ago. They play different roles in different ages, however, the main function which is ordering knowledge and information and inheriting cultures has been the same. Besides, libraries are the symbol of cultural business. The way it goes up or down reflects political, economic and socially classical situation of a nation. Libraries are the very important index to evaluate a civilized nation. This article is about a historical research of library development in modern Taiwan. I put Taiwanese library business as a sequence of Taiwanese historical development, and make the business as an individual subject to be analyzed. It is found that how libraries developed relates to the political, social, economic, and cultural situation of a nation. The whole environment influences even more on the operational ideas, administrational system, and concreted execution of developing libraries. When the time Taiwan was governed under Ching Dynasty, we knew that there were no library conceptions and facilities in the Han society like those in the western society based on the understanding of officially compiled annals of local history. Only the book collections from Confucianism or an academy of classical learning regarded as sort of libraries. In the modern times of Taiwan, library development started from Japanese ruled period. At the first beginning of the period, the civil proposed to establish libraries. It was the origin of Taiwanese library business. The main idea of the library in this time was to transform social traditions. The purpose of running library was to promote local education and to inspire folks’ intelligence. Later of the time, the authority set up “Library of Taiwanese Presidential Palace”. It was the only one library governed directly under Presidential Palace. It was filled with sufficient resources in human, finance, and collections, and became the most well established library gradually. It also held an important position of counselling libraries all around Taiwan. It could be called the center of Taiwanese libraries. It was thought that libraries were an effective social educational tool in the post Japanese ruled period. The background of the purpose by building libraries’ facilities as social education was to colonize the society and to use libraries as cultural political tool of Japanese Imperialism The first beginning of postwar, Taiwan was situated under the policies of “de-Japanimation” and “in-Sinicization”, there were problems for re-establishing libraries like budget–short, librarian-supply, and organization-subordination. It went through comprehensive consideration and scheme, but only focused on receiving buildings and destroying Japanese collections. There were no practical steps or programs for follow-up administration. This caused potential hard breaking through difficulties and crisis by running Taiwanese libraries after. The library development of the time was the worst and no contribution. After Korean War, the dispirited library business was at the stage of transform and key development for American support. It gained a great deal of financial support and American advisors. The most important key point was to help holding library workshop and to develop professional education of library. The last was the long-term influence to Taiwanese library business. What had done during the time American support was to store energy to Taiwanese library growing for next step. It was the first stage work of post cultural establishments and made stable foundations. It could be the biggest transition and change in history of Taiwanese library business. With establishing Chinese library associate, re-opening National Central Library in Taiwan, and reviving movements of Chinese culture, the cultural administration of Taiwan at this time frame was basically going with government’s policies which were counterattacking and reviving Chinese culture. The cultural development was deeply controlled and influenced by the government. In 1970’s, when the time Chiang, Ching-Kuo was the premier, he completed the ten major construction projects and kept promoting the twelve major construction projects. The twelfth project was cultural establishments and focused on libraries. Cultural centers were built in every county and city. The core of cultural establishments was building libraries expanding in hardware and software from the central government to the local governments. This was regarded as a new milestone of Taiwanese library business. After, building libraries developed further to the basic level, to further away, and to village and town levels which needed libraries. It presented the prosperity of Taiwanese library business and a new expecting opportunity. Running library business is not a temporary hard construction; it is a long-term and sustainable investment, a continually long-range cultural business. Finally, this research addresses that it needs to be in accord with every subjective and objective situation to develop Taiwanese library business sustainably. For outside objective situations, the government has to make mature policies of developing libraries and to provide stable and sufficient budget-support. General people like to use the information from libraries for the atmosphere of libraries made by the whole social environment. For the subjective situations, libraries become important institution with feature collections to provide all service and professional information as core value through professional librarians’ good attitudes and in proper buildings for running libraries sustainably to upgrade culture and to promote social education.

The Conclusion of this thesis outlines the continuing impediment of low library consciousness in China today.<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Abstract:
CASTLE LIBRARY OF OTTO JR. OF NOSTITZ IN JAWOR The library of Otto Jr. of Nostitz was founded in the beginning of the 1650's in the Lower Silesian castle Jawor. It consists approximately of 5 000 volumes and its structure as well as its history makes it unique and elevates the Jawor library among the most interesting book collections of early modern Europe. Shortly after death of its founder, the library was bought by Otto's brother Johann Hartwig of Nostitz and moved to the newly built palace in Malá Strana in Prague where it laid the foundations of the new family library of the house of Nostitz. The library is placed in two rooms on the second floor till today. The thesis tries to introduce the personality of the founder of the Jawor library Otto Jr. of Nostitz, his tastes in the book purchase as well as the topical structure of his book collection and its future fates. Notwithstanding, the main point of the doctor thesis is to present the issues of the thorough provenance research of the oldest part of the library. The terminus ante quem for the year of edition of the books relevant for the provenance research marks out the death of Otto Jr. in the year 1665. The most recent and complete catalogue of the Nostitz library in the present use dates back to the 19th century and shows remarkable leaks and...

Knudsen, Cindy. "Simulation and queuing models for resoource allocation in the UBC Libraries." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/16524.

Abstract:
This thesis describes two projects completed at the Centre for Operations Excellence (COE) for Darrell Bailie Manager, Finance and Facilities, and Dwight Tanner, Administrator, Special Projects of UBC Libraries. The cost of maintaining a sizable collection of reference material facilitates the need for UBC Library branches to be more cost effective. This thesis studies two services the library offers with this goal in mind. The first study considers the photocopier service available at Koerner Library. There are copy rooms on four floors of the library with different levels of demand. Furthermore, the peak demand for the photocopiers occurs for only a short period. Queueing theory and simulation are used to model the system to determine the optimal number of photocopiers needed in each copy room to meet the peak demand, while still maintaining an acceptable service level. This thesis shows a reduction in photocopiers is feasible for Koerner Library and offers two types of charts to use when making decisions on size and allocation of the photocopier fleet. The first chart quantifies changes in the mean time in the system (i.e. the mean waiting time and service time), the mean time in the queue, the mean queue length, and the utilization of the photocopiers when the number of photocopiers on a floor is decreased or increased from the current number of photocopiers. The second chart indicates how many photocopiers are needed to meet a certain level of customer service, for each Copy room. The second study considers the services offered at circulation desks in Koerner Library, Woodward Biomedical Library, and David Lam Library and the self-charge machines at Koerner Library. The demand for their circulation desks is variable not only throughout the day, but also throughout the week and the year. Demand is assessed and grouped into similar periods. Queueing theory is used to determine a staffing schedule to satisfy the demand for each of these periods, while still maintaining an acceptable service level. With the selfcharge machine, a patron can check out his/her own material, thereby circumventing the circulation desk. This thesis shows the reliability of the machines is very limited and a large number of patrons will have to continue their transactions at the circulation desk.<br>Business, Sauder School of<br>Operations and Logistics (OPLOG), Division of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
碩士<br>淡江大學<br>資訊與圖書館學系<br>92<br>The prevalence of the human race is contributed by the accumulation of our knowledge and experience and public libraries have played a central role in providing these services. Recent development of information and communication technologies also declares a new era for information services to the people’s life-long learning. However, as computer and networking technologies become popular and sources of information retrieval diversify, the public libraries in our country are unable to keep up with the trend due to the reductions of government funds. Suffered from global depression and reduction of government financing, the San Francisco Public Library has an alternative solution to raise funds more aggressively from private sectors to support its operations and new services. This study proposes the idea for public libraries to be operated on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) manner which may provide a way for effective use of available resources from the government and private sectors. In addition, spare-space reuse has recently became a field of intensive research after successfully renovation of the Art Site of Chia-Yih Railroad Warehouse and the Hwa-Shan Special District for Art and Culture. Spare-space reuse not only saves government funding by avoiding reconstruction, it also re-vitalizes the function of existing buildings and spaces. Thus, spare-space reuse is one of the mainstream administrative policies for the Council for Cultural Affairs of current administration. The Council for Cultural Affairs has budgeted over one hundred million in the 2001 fiscal year for spare-space reuse and local governments also propose many spare-space reuse plans. Spare-space reuse is now not only a new direction in cultural event plans, it also represents the growth of Taiwanese cultural development and a new possibility for Taiwanese cultural environment. This study explores current status of both domestic and foreign spare-space reuse projects and applications of BOT operations in spare-space reuse projects. These information are compiled into a new model of BOT operations that may be applicable for public library projects in the future.

Chung-chin, Lai, and 賴忠勤. "A Study of the Automation Intersystem Integrated Models for Public Libraries in Taiwan Area." Thesis, 2003. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/23786248875936199720.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立政治大學<br>圖書資訊研究所<br>91<br>The main connective model of the public libraries automation system in Taiwan area is an integrated model connected between the municipal and county cultural bureaus (cultural centers) and rural libraries with one mutually automated system. Since its setup in 1996, the model has provided library patrons of all cities and counties with services of the union bibliographic database and one library card to be used at all libraries. Some counties and cities have also prepared to advance the interlibrary loan service and utilize the functions of the common library automation system. The motive of the study is to find out the integration of the public library automation in every county and city, to the provision of the intersystem information exchange, the promotion of the public library cooperation, and the expansion of the cross utilization of collections resources of public libraries all over Taiwan when the public library automation system has been completed in every county and city. The purposes of the study are: to investigate and find out the state of art of the operation of library automation systems of public libraries in Taiwan area and the interlibrary exchange problems, to collect and generalize functions, structures and related standards of interlibrary processes of the library automation system, and to analyze advantages and shortcomings and feasible methods of each intersystem integrated model, so as to work out a union model of public libraries integrated automation system in Taiwan area for reference by public libraries, government institutions and factories in their decision making and system development. Forthermore, the study tries to make an outline of the future development trends of the library automation system and offer some proposals on the basis of other information related technology and conceptions. The document analysis, questionnaires, information system analysis and other approaches are used for the research. The questionnaires are collected mainly from the library system management staffs or chiefs including national libraries and municipal and county public libraries. In addition, similar questions are also asked to system librarians, information system factories and college system librarians in order to make the data more accurate and objective. The conclusions of this study suggest three intersystem integrated structures of the public library automation system: “one” system, one “central system” set up for connecting with other uniform systems, and one system to connecting non-uniform systems (with at least one of the connected libraries available with a “central system”). The applicable area range of the integration is preferably life circle area, and may be expanded to the whole Taiwan area in the future. As to functions of the integration system, in addition to promoting factories, developing the system on the basis of the relative standards, suggestions are made for applications of information technology in other domains and in compliance with patron-oriented needs. Public libraries can also consider information outsourcing and adopt ASP (Application Service Provider) mode for the library automation system, so as to help out the lack of information management professional staffs.
