Abstract:
Among the early medals made by Pisanello (Antonio Pisano, c. 1395–c. 1455), considered as the “inventor of the modern medal”, there are two of mercenary captains, Niccolò Piccinino and Francesco Sforza (the future duke of Milan). At the alleged moment of the medals’ execution both condottieri were in the service of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan, who appears to have been the most probable commissioner. The pairing of these two captains was not coincidental – they were successors to the leaders of the two greatest Italian military companies, the bracceschi (led by Braccio da Montone) and the sforzeschi (of Muzio Attendolo Sforza), whose juxtaposition soon became a topos among contemporary chroniclers and biographers. The article outlines the political background of the commission and discusses the content and iconography of the two medals.

Abstract:
Abstract While in modern times excellence in science is often acknowledged with a prize medal, this was not the case in the Renaissance. Despite the fact that the Italian Renaissance saw a remarkable revival of medal casting, there were no medals to be won in the Renaissance for originality and scientific priority. Rather, professional success was determined by the ability to win public disputations and debate contested topics. This article illustrates how this mode of knowledge production, which reached its peak in the second half of the sixteenth century, was deeply rooted in the culture of verbal and physical duelling that developed in Italy around that time. Transforming the culture of academic disputation into one of public spectacle, the sixteenth century saw scientific practitioners make careers out of controversy and polemical exchange. From the mid-seventeenth century onwards, this model of knowledge production was slowly superseded by more moderate exchanges and collaborations.

Abstract:
The branch of historical science of numismatics (from the Latin "numisma" - coin) originated in the 19th century and became closely connected with economics, politics, culture and law, it includes a thematic study of coins, medals and plaque. Best of all, the history of uronephrology is illustrated by various forms of the medalist educational art (exonum or paranumismatics), and the medal became the prototype of the memorial coin. This work presents a catalog of more than 400 numismatic materials (including some unique, first cited), reflects the stages of development of the study of the structure and function of the kidneys, methods for diagnosing and treating diseases, there are links to significant historical events, brief biographies of physicians who have made an invaluable contribution are mentioned into the formation of this scientific discipline. The development of urology over 520 years of historical epochs of the New and Modern times were presented, portraits on 60 numismatic materials of well-known specialists-urologists and kidney transplantologists were presented, scientific forums of urologists were reflected on commemorative medals.

Abstract:
In 2015, during archaeological research conducted around the church in Gniew (Pomerania Province), a small fragment of a metal plate was found. After it was cleaned as part of restoration it turned out to be a cross. The excavation was located outside, near the chancel wall. Research conducted there confirmed the conclusions drawn in previous years, i.e. that the church grounds had been used as a graveyard. The fact that the graveyard had been used for a long time was proved by numerous burials, overlapping grave pits and ossuaries, meaning places where human remains were gathered after earlier burials in the graveyard and the church had been emptied. Devotional items, including medals, crucifixes, scapulars, and prayer ropes, have been long connected with the Christian tradition. The fact that they are found during excavations in churches and graveyards may indicate that they were popular in Late Middle Ages and in the Modern Era. Unfortunately, the cross has not been preserved whole. It is difficult to determine whether the missing loop and two fragments of the horizontal bar were damaged when it was used by its owner or as a result of corrosion taking place after it had been deposited in the ground. The first written sources concerning the medal itself come from an information leaflet dated to 1664. It depicts Saint Benedict in a gesture of benediction and a medal with a characteristic cross and letters. One of the most important works on the Saint Benedict Medal is the work by Prosper Guèranger from 1862. Saint Benedict medals and crucifixes are also known from many inventories of artefacts compiled during research conducted in graveyards, mostly from the Modern Era. Saint Benedict crosses in a form resembling a knight’s cross were found in, among others, Maniowy in Podhale, Gliwice, Lubiń near Kościan, Wrocław, and Częstochowa. Despite the three and a half centuries that have passed since the first information about the medal appeared, and the six centuries since the first mention of its symbolism, it is still very popular among Christians. Most probably, information about the miracles happening thanks to it are no longer the main reason why it is worn but it can be a kind of an amulet protecting against evil. Despite rather scarce literature on Saint Benedict devotional items found at archaeological sites, one should expect that as research progresses, doubts about the manufacturing places or more detailed relationships between the appearance of crosses and medals will be dispelled.

Abstract:
The world largest specialized international agricultural exhibition AGRITECHNICA-2019 took place in Germany on 10-16th of November, 2019 at the Deutsche Messe exhibition hall in Hannover. The exhibition hall covered an area of over 320,000 m² and included 28 sites. All the world-leading companies in the industry were represented at the exhibition. Around 600 new companies used this international market platform to introduce their products. The slogan of the exhibition AGRITECHNICA-2019 is: Global Farming – Local Responsibility. About 300 new products were registered during the exhibition. The electromechanical gearbox EAutoPower was awarded by gold medal. Other 39 winners were awarded by silver medals. The exposition mostly included models of self-propelled traction and harvesting machinery, as well as machinery for tillage and crop care. Special attention was paid to improvement of the undercarriage systems and particularly to remova-ble tracked running systems for tractors and other self-propelled vehicles with its tracked and wheeled-tracked embodiment versions. Almost every company showed different kinds of automa-tion and robotization solutions for partial operations in agriculture, both for basic tillage and weed control. The big attention is drawn to the significant contribution of the results of cooperation of individual manufacturers to the formation of the overall image of the exhibition. Labor decentraliza-tion tendencies to achieve the best results by both complete machines production and separate com-ponents release were noted. The domestic manufacturer Rostselmash received particular acknowl-edgment by winning a silver medal for the development of night vision system RSM Night Vision. Everything mentioned above allows us to conclude that, undoubtedly, the level of technical and technological preparation of agricultural machinery and equipment is increasing, which entails an expansion of the technological component of agricultural work.

Abstract:
Sport represents a domain where various functions and effects can be manifested. The sports industry today is characterized by modern technology, especially in the sphere of manufacturing sports props and equipment, which significantly helps its development and progress. The sports industry today exists within the social-economic achievements and power of a society. In essence, it should adapt to the new living conditions, work conditions and the conditions in which business is being conducted. Today, it is necessary to invest more in the offer of the sports industry (athletes, results, equipment, equipment, facilities, diagnostics ...), in order to be more efficient in the form of the final product on the market. The industry must adapt to the conditions of the world market (supply and demand). That is why it is sometimes necessary to also expand the range of constituents in order to win a medal – achieve a top sports result. This article will analyze the phenomenon of the modern sports industry as a business model, its production and the realization of the necessary conditions for achieving top sports results and winning medals at big competitions. Naturally, without unity between numerous external and internal factors no top sports results can be achieved. The authors also deal with an analysis of the factors of the sports industry.

Abstract:
Purpose: to analyze the performances of the national Greco-Roman wrestling team of Ukraine at cadet and junior competitions from 1993 to the present. Material and methods. The research used the following methods: analysis of scientific and methodological information and Internet sources; analysis of the official protocols of the competition; retrospective analysis; methods of mathematical statistics. The performances of the athletes of the Greco-Roman wrestling national team of Ukraine at the European and world championships among cadets and juniors from 1993 to the present are analyzed. The number of participants, the number of medals earned, and the number of gold medals were counted. Results: based on the analysis of scientific and methodological information and generalization of advanced practical experience, it was found that the problem of analyzing competitive activity in modern sports is one of the most urgent. During the period under review, 209 athletes of the Ukrainian national team took part in the European Championships, of which 13 (6,2 %) became winners of the competition, and 55 (26,3 %) wrestlers took prizes. While 199 wrestlers have taken part in the European Championships among juniors since 1993, 71 (35,7 %) medals were won, of which 19 (9,5 %) were gold. In the period under review, 136 athletes took part in the world championships among cadets, and 12 (8,8 %) gold medals were won. Making comparisons, 192 athletes of the Ukrainian national team took part in the world championships among juniors, 10 (5,2 %) gold and 41 (21,4 %) medals in general were won. The analysis of the results showed that the largest number of athletes took the second, the third and the fifth places (more than 30 wrestlers for each place) at international competitions among cadets. The largest number of Greco-Roman style junior wrestlers of the Ukrainian national team took the following places: the third place (46 wrestlers), the fifth place (40 wrestlers) and the second place (37 wrestlers). Conclusions. The athletes of the Ukrainian national team show good results and occupy high places, however, there is a negative trend towards a decrease in the number of awards over time. Keywords: Greco-Roman wrestling, competitive activity, cadets, juniors, analysis.

Abstract:
Enclosed in a 1673 letter to Henry Oldenburg were two drawings of a series of astrological sigils, coins and amulets from the collection of Strasbourg mathematician Julius Reichelt (1637–1719). As portrayals of particular medieval and early modern sigils are relatively rare, this paper will analyse the role of these medals in medieval and early modern medicine, the logic behind their perceived efficacy, and their significance in early modern astrological and cabalistic practice. I shall also demonstrate their change in status in the late seventeenth century from potent magical healing amulets tied to the mysteries of the heavens to objects kept in a cabinet for curiosos. The evolving perception of the purpose of sigils mirrored changing early modern beliefs in the occult influences of the heavens upon the body and the natural world, as well as the growing interests among virtuosi in collecting, numismatics and antiquities.

Abstract:
Integrating new-media nonfiction into secondary-level English provides an efficient and effective resource in teaching modern literacy, which requires an understanding of the participatory element of communication today. Messages can be consumed and created among multimodalities and multimedia. The form and interactivity of a publication can affect its interpretation. Technology extends students' publishing capabilities and their reach to a bounty of discourse communities. This thesis, which is available in conventional hard copy and electronic forms, explores the definitions of New Media and modern literacy, how teachers can adopt the use of New Media nonfiction, and the resources needed to do so. A case study stands as a practical example. The Participatory Element Cone measures a publication's interactivity and sensory stimulation. The thesis is broken into modules, rather than chapters, so that the reader can choose to follow it linearly or to use the paper more as a manual and enter it at any point.

Abstract:
High-level cognitive abilities such as memory, navigation, and decision making rely on the communication between the hippocampal formation and the neocortex. At the interface between these two brain regions is the entorhinal cortex, a multimodal association area where neurons with remarkable representations of self-location have been discovered: the grid cells. Grid cells are neurons that fire according to the position of an animal in its environment and whose firing fields form a periodic triangular pattern. Grid cells are thought to support animal's navigation and spatial memory, but the cellular mechanisms that generate their tuning are still unknown. In this thesis, I study computational models of neural circuits to explain the emergence, inheritance, and amplification of grid-cell activity. In the first part of the thesis, I focus on the initial formation of grid-cell tuning. I embrace the idea that periodic representations of space could emerge via a competition between persistently-active spatial inputs and the reluctance of a neuron to fire for long stretches of time. Building upon previous theoretical work, I propose a single-cell model that generates grid-like activity solely form spatially-irregular inputs, spike-rate adaptation, and Hebbian synaptic plasticity. In the second part of the thesis, I study the inheritance and amplification of grid-cell activity. Motivated by the architecture of entorhinal microcircuits, I investigate how feed-forward and recurrent connections affect grid-cell tuning. I show that grids can be inherited across neuronal populations, and that both feed-forward and recurrent connections can improve the regularity of spatial firing. Finally, I show that a connectivity supporting these functions could self-organize in an unsupervised manner. Altogether, this thesis contributes to a better understanding of the principles governing the neuronal representation of space in the medial entorhinal cortex.

Full text
Abstract:
By examining the current Swedish debate on surrogacy, this thesis explores how the phenomenon of surrogacy can be understood in its complexity, through the use of an intersectional analysis, and a focus on the position of the surrogate mother. By using a qualitative textual analysis as a method, an analysis of 34 articles in six of Sweden’s largest newspapers under the time period of 2018-04-25 to 2021-04-25 was conducted. The material resulted in four themes: The logic of the freedom of self-determination, Surpassing and breaking norms, The subordination of the subject, Commodification of body and meaning. This study shows that by separating the altruistic surrogacy from the commercial surrogacy, and by favoring the reasons for choosing to be a surrogate mother as primarily altruistic, the potential risks of surrogacy as exploitation are disguised. While at the same time the image of the woman as a self-sacrificing and nurturing subject is manifested as an ideal. Those who oppose surrogacy, present it as a phenomenon in which the surrogate mother cannot be separated from exploration. The commodification of the body reduces the woman and the child to objects in a system of exchange controlled by the powers of market. In this process the values contributed to the process of giving birth and the emotional labors attributed to it, are in this view, regarded as lost. The study also shows, based on analysis of other studies, that surrogate mothers from India and USA, who partake in commercial surrogacy, do not primarily regard surrogacy as a labor but as something linked to a higher form of experience. It is the conclusion of this essay that these narratives are strategies by which the surrogate mother demands to be seen as a subject in her own right despite the exploitative logic of the global market and the commodification of the body.

Abstract:
We consider the use of medial surfaces to represent symmetries of 3-D objects. This allows for a qualitative abstraction based on a directed acyclic graph (DAG) of components and also a degree of invariance to a variety of transformations including the articulation and deformation of parts. We demonstrate the use of this representation for both indexing and matching 3-D object models. Our formulation uses the geometric information associated with each node along with an eigenvalue labeling of the adjacency matrix of the subgraph rooted at that node. We compare our algorithm with the techniques of harmonic spheres (Kazhdan et al., 2003c) and shape distributions (Osada et al., 2002). The results demonstrate the significant potential of medial surface-based representations and their graph spectra in the context of 3-D model retrieval in computer graphics.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The challenge of representing movement in literary texts involves not only a knowledge of the physical, affective, and cognitive aspects of motion, it also needs to engage with movement’s medial transformation in the act of writing. Thus, this article draws attention to the largely unnoticed importance of writing in its visual and spatial dimensions within the field of literary movement studies. The article explores the dynamic aspects of the concept of the ›figure‹ and traces its relation to the literary ›scene‹ or ›scenario‹. Drawing on contemporary literary and cultural theories of the ›scene‹ as a cognitive operation (Rancière) and engaging with examples of texts on movement (Pierre Rameau’s ‚Le Maître à Danser‘ and Jean- Georges Noverre’s ‚Lettres sur la danse‘), the aim of this article is to introduce the concept of the ›scene‹ as a (transdisciplinary) hermeneutic category for literary studies of movement in modernity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Desertification is one of the major problems affecting our environment in the 21st century. Indeed, it threatens more than 1.5 million people worldwide and affects a quarter of the land in less than 100 countries, it spreads over half a billion hectares per year and reduces the surface water and groundwater. Thus, according to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation written in 1993, the direct and visible impacts of desertification are the damage on crops, on livestock, on the electricity productivity, etc. Indirect impacts are lack of food production, poverty, social upheaval, rural exodus to cities. In this paper, our work consists in modelling the degradation process of land whose advanced level leads to the desertification. The first step consists in assessing the degradation of land with the MEDALUS model developed by the MEDALUS project of the commission of the European Union. This model assesses desertification by its sensitivity index which is the geometric mean of four quality factor indexes of soil, vegetation, climate and management (land use). This assessment method uses the major part of the parameters influencing the land degradation process. The second step is to model the land degradation process using cellular automata (CA) approach. For that purpose, the study area will be divided into a regular grid of cells. Initially, each cell has a state (desertification sensitivity index) whose evolution at each discrete time step depends on the states of its neighbours through a built transition function. As a result, this study allows to introduce a dynamical process in MEDALUS model. Indeed, from an initial configuration of an area, the model can predict its evolution over time and space according to a continuous state transition function that extend the classical CA approach and fit to the MEDALUS model parameters.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2018: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2018-76148.

Abstract:
Engine subsystem models are not commonly used in design optimization studies as it is computationally expensive to solve these models for a large number of iterations. To reduce the computational cost of such optimizations, a novel multi-fidelity Kriging-based optimization approach is proposed that uses shell FEMs to provide a low-fidelity response and solid FEMs to provide a high-fidelity response. This marks the first time that shell and solid models are used together in a multi-fidelity surrogate modelling approach. The shell FEMs are generated from medial surfaces that are extracted from solid component geometries in a semi-automatic manner. This approach is applied to a case study for optimizing the intercasing subsystem from the CRESCENDO whole engine model. The results show that the optimum design found by the multi-fidelity Kriging approach was on par with the optimum design found by a single-fidelity Kriging approach using only solid FEMs which is more than twice as expensive to run. The shell and solid FEMs were also shown to be well-correlated such that optimization studies employing only the shell FEMs by themselves could generate designs that are feasible with respect to the design constraints imposed on the solid model.

Zambrano, Omar, and Hugo Hernández. Inter-American Development Bank, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003067.
