Abstract:
The Architect's first drawn line marks a significant moment where alteration to the site is conceived and intervention with nature is beset. Equilibrium of the natural order; vegetative, habitat, hydrology, and geology are all in a vulnerable state. Rarely do these develop into harmonious balances. More often they are imposed instances. The Industrial Revolution forever changed the relationship between humans and nature, tilting the weight of power towards man. While humans capacity for innovation and destruction have grown enormously, our dependence on the natural cycles and resources of the planet remain and grow more voracious. Yet simultaneously, modern progress has facilitated the physical and psychological detachment of that interdependence. The fundamental elements of our existence are veiled through the efficiency of urbanization and its derivatives of specialization, mass-production, and globalization. This project is an examination of the interrelationship between humans and nature through the lens of civic architecture within a naturalistic setting. The fundamental thesis of this project is that there is a primal biological thread that connects human beings to the natural order, whether on a visceral or conscious level. This project explores the belief that humans intrinsically yearn to reinforce that bond - awakening primordial instincts developed over millions of years of evolutionary survival that have been suppressed by the artifice of modern life. Through a process of retreat and contemplation, this project offers the opportunity of individuals to evaluate and rebalance their own scales with nature and find their own accord and harmony.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the troubled relationship between Hispanic-American Modernism and modernity through the close study of a representative array of authors (José Martí, Rubén Darío, Enrique Gómez Carrillo, Augusto Dhalmar and Pedro Prado). My analysis departs from the revisionist theories of Angel Rama and Ivan A. Schulman, which changed the traditional views about the movement towards a more complete vision of its role as a literature that is highly subversive. During the XIX century, America experienced a vigorous cultural awakening unsupported by an incomplete modernization whose more fundamental principles are challenged by the systematic use of primitivism by these authors. I propose that by analyzing how primitivism is used as an essential tool for criticism, a deeper understanding of a highly codified literature and its importance as precursor of the Vanguard may be reached.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Belgian painter Léon Frederic (1856-1940), nicknamed the “gothique moderne”, played a key role at the turn of the 20th century as one of the main actors of Belgian modern art, both on the national and international artistic scene. Based on a rigorous examination of a studio collection of several thousand pieces, archives and unpublished correspondence, as well as on the realization of the catalogue raisonné of the work, this study aims to reconstruct the trajectory of an omnipresent painter, forgotten faced with the "mythology of rupture" of the avant-garde. If the history of art has retained the image of a mystical painter recluse in the countryside, the comprehension of his career enabled to reconstruct the portrait of a “faux-naïf” aware of the promotional stakes. Frederic belongs to a new Belgian elite who was at the origin of the intense cultural life in Brussels. Throughout his career, he has developed a new image of the "people", worker and peasant, both as a point of convergence of the necessary and moral image, wanted by the supporters of the social art, and as a projection of a cultural imagination, specific to an elite in search of a better future for the underprivileged classes. Stylistically, his art, approaching the "archaïsme moderne" theorized by Emile Verhaeren, imposes it in the new international and modernist field of the Secessions as the ideal and sought-after ethnotype of the "Flemish" artist. A bourgeois and marginal painter, elite and social, national and cosmopolitan, Frederic appeared as one of the heralds of the modernity and invites us to question the binarity of the conception of art at the end of the 19th century

Williams, Ben H. "Extracting motion primitives from natural handwriting data." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3221.

Full text
Abstract:
Humans and animals can plan and execute movements much more adaptably and reliably than current computers can calculate robotic limb trajectories. Over recent decades, it has been suggested that our brains use motor primitives as blocks to build up movements. In broad terms a primitive is a segment of pre-optimised movement allowing a simplified movement planning solution. This thesis explores a generative model of handwriting based upon the concept of motor primitives. Unlike most primitive extraction studies, the primitives here are time extended blocks that are superimposed with character specific offsets to create a pen trajectory. This thesis shows how handwriting can be represented using a simple fixed function superposition model, where the variation in the handwriting arises from timing variation in the onset of the functions. Furthermore, it is shown how handwriting style variations could be due to primitive function differences between individuals, and how the timing code could provide a style invariant representation of the handwriting. The spike timing representation of the pen movements provides an extremely compact code, which could resemble internal spiking neural representations in the brain. The model proposes an novel way to infer primitives in data, and the proposed formalised probabilistic model allows informative priors to be introduced providing a more accurate inference of primitive shape and timing.

Abstract: We evaluated in this work the effects of Royal Jelly (RJ) on growth and differentiation of bone marrow and spleen hematopoietics progenitors in Listeria monocytogenes (LM) infected mice. We also evaluated serum colonystimulating activity, alterations in spleen weight and animal resistance front to the infection. In such way, BALB/c mice were profilacticly treated with RJ by gavage for 7 consecutive days with doses at 125, 250, 500 and 750 mg/Kg. Three hours after the last treating day the animais were infected intraperitoneally with a sublethal dose of the bacteria (1x103 LM/animal). To evaluate animal resistance front to the infection we carried out a survival analysis with a lethal dose of the bacteria (1x105 LM/animal). Our results demonstrated significant decrease on the hematopoietic progenitor numbers in LM bearing mice and significant extramedullar hematopoiesis as consequence. In the other hand, myelossupression induced by listeriosis was reverted when bearing mice were treated profilacticly with ali doses of RJ, resulting in normal levels of CFU-GM. Another important aspect regards colony-stimulating factor production by hematopoietic cells. In this direction, we observed that the infected animais presented higher serum colony-stimulating activity. Previous administration of RJ at ali doses in infected mice significantly increased serum stimulatory activity as well as CFU-GM number when compared to non-treated bearing groups. We also observed spleen weight increase in the non-treated infected group at ali doses, which contrasted with normal values obtained in previously treated bearing mice. In addition, the administration of RJ at 125, 250, 500 and 750 mg/Kg increased animal resistance front to listeriosis to 37,5%, 37,5%, 25% and 12,5%, respectively. Our results have demonstrated that RJ has a stimulating effect on the modulation of the immuno-hematopoietic response in mice infected with LM. Moreover, the treatment with RJ increased survival rate in infected mice with lethal dose of the bacteria. We demonstrated that RJ presents extensive therapeutic dose range since the adminisitration of ali evaluated doses (125, 250, 500 and 750 mg/Kg) presented similar results

Abstract:
The Fauves and the Brücke enlightened the art of "the Primitive Artists" from Oceania, Africa and America. Transforming the western vision of art, they activated a crisis among the prevailing usual artistic manners in Europe which, according to them, were just another way to depict the Nature. In that distance they revealed the Art's Other : they imposed by their creations a new aesthetic and cultural vision and they did create and moreover added the word "Primitivism" when they discoursed on the Modern art. Thereby these Artists represented a certain way of feeling and the following expressions such as, "Negro art", "Primitive Art", "Orient", corresponding to imaginary categories used to put a label on the Art's Other. They nonetheless contributed to change their contemporarie's mentalities in showing that art was not the privilege of the sole western countries, and in placing on an equal level European and "Primitive" cultures. On the one hand, these artistic transfers were helped by "boatmen" such as Aby Warburg, Franz Boas, Leo Frobenius or Augustin Krämer who brought these objects to Europe and studied art of the "Primitive" peoples, the birth of ethnology being linked to the colonial context. The Fauves and the artists of die Brücke shared a common way to look at African Art while their perspectives crossed concerning Oceanian Art, but the German were the only one to recognize Native American Art as an Art before 1914. On the other hand their artistic creation shows an hybridization of cultural transmissions, noticeable their stylistic borrowings, in their artistic practices and even in their way of life as far as die Brücke is concerned

Abstract: This work anaIyzed tbe immunomodulating effect of Agaricus blazei Murrill (ABM) dried extract on growth and differentiation of hematopoietic precursors of granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM) in the bone marrow and spIeen of BALB/c mice infected witb Lisleria monocylogenes. We aIso evaluated the colony stimulating activity of the serum, changes in spleen weigh, and the animals resistance to infection. To conduct the research, BALB/c mice were treated prior to the infection with three difeerent doses of ABM (500, 1000 and 1500mg/Kg), via gavage during seven consecutive days. After that the animals were infected intraperitoneally with a subletha1 dose (1x10 3 bacterial animaI) of Listeria monocytogenes to evaIuate tbe hematopoietic parameters. The animaIs were likely infected with a lethal dose (6x ] 04bacteria/animaI) 10 evaIuate their resistance 10 infection in a survivaI curve. The results showed a significant decrease in the hematopoietc precursors of the bone marrow, a significant increase in extramedular hematopoiesis and consequent spleenmegaly, and an increase in the production of colony stimulating factors in the non-treates infected animaIs. When the animaIs were previously treated with 1000 and 1500mg1Kg of ABM we observed a significant reversion of infection-induced mielosupression, to normal levels, spleenmegaly inhibition and extramedular hematopoiesis in the infected and pretreated groups with all the doses. A significant increase in the serum stimulating activity was also observed in the pretreated infected animais with na adicional increase in a period of 48hs after the infection with 1000 and 1500mg/Kg of the extract. The treatment with ABM increased animal resistance to listeriosis, and the probability of survival for the 1000 and 1500mg/Kg doses was 50% and 80% respectively. These results suggested that ABM is a powerful immunomodulator capable of increasing the survival of animals mfected with a lethal dose of Listeria monocytogenes, possibly due to this extract capacity of restoring marrow and splenic hematopoesis

Abstract:
The resulting urban expansion from the rapid development of cities is a major challenge for sustainable development. Thus, the design of appropriate computational models that enable the simulation, spatialized visualization and analysis of the process of urban growth is critical. Neighborhood Management policies and types of urban growth are made up of equipment represented by different types of permits or concessions for opening and business operation. Also for road systems, transportation systems, political and administrative boundaries, zoning and street layout. It can be demonstrated in a spatial database by (a) georeferenced open data, a term that characterizes human elements, demographic, socio-economic, infrastructure, environmental and historical conditions, (b) different geometries (point, line and polygon) and (c) use of spatial functions for topological relations, directional or metrics between devices. Construction and implementation of the proposed model in this paper are used the above items (a, b, c) and a set of questions prepared by experts in the planning area, identified as primordial concepts to urban growth area. In relation to the goal and modeling the most relevant contributions are: (1) the representation by means of a small set of primitives in a database with spatial extension, (2) the development of a vocabulary or assigning a semantic the model, (3) the interaction between different concepts associated with the process of urban growth, (4) the possibility of expansion and integration of other areas of georeferenced data and open and (5) in the lower run time to 10 seconds to 70% spatial queries. Contributions in relation to the experiment with users, considered the web interface developed in this work: (1) on the fact that the tool covers the needs as regards the generation and spatialized visualization of data for 4 of 5 users, (2 ) interacting with georeferenced data of business licenses, neighborhoods and streets boundary and (3) in the data visualization from the historical and spatial point of view.

Paris 11, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999PA112030.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study intends to investigate and clarify the links between the Early Netherlandish pictorial tradition (15th and 16th centuries) and mystical literature as exemplified by Ruysbroeck the Admirable and the authors associated with the Modern Devotion (devotio moderna). Focusing on a corpus of works by Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Petrus Christus, Hans Memling, Hugo van der Goes, the Master of the View of St Gudule, the Master of 1499, the Master of Alkmaar, Hieronymus Bosch, Gerard David and Jan Mostaert, this analysis brings to light that painting and writing enrich each other’s meaning. In the first part, we shall observe the ways in which the painters captured the dynamic progression of the various types of vision (active, internal and contemplative) as well as the ways in which they addressed the phenomenon of disimagination. The second part of this study will highlight the fact that the image supports the spiritual and meditative practices of the faithful through various processes and techniques (mnemonic, participative etc.). The third part of the analysis will focus on the visual treatment of a key idea defined by Ruysbroeck the Admirable, and adapted by the authors of the Modern Devotion: dat ghemeine leven (the common life)

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is on facial biometrics; specifically in the problems of face detection and face recognition. Despite intensive research over the last 20 years, the technology is not foolproof, which is why we do not see use of face recognition systems in critical sectors such as banking. In this thesis, we focus on three sub-problems in these two areas of research. Firstly, we propose methods to improve the speed-accuracy trade-off of the state-of-the-art face detector. Secondly, we consider a problem that is often ignored in the literature: to decrease the training time of the detectors. We propose two techniques to this end. Thirdly, we present a detailed large-scale study on self-updating face recognition systems in an attempt to answer if continuously changing facial appearance can be learnt automatically.

"Constantin Brancusi's Primitivism." Master's thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.27436.

Abstract:
abstract: The Romanian avant-garde artist Constantin Brancusi is considered one of the most significant artists of modern sculpture. This is due to his innovative use of materials, such as wood and marble, and his reduction and precision of form. Brancusi developed his abstraction with "primitive" sources of art in mind. This thesis examines how and to what extent primitivism played a central role in Brancusi's sculptures and his construction as a primitive artist. Romanian folk art and African art were the two main sources of influence on Brancusi's primitivism. Brancusi identified himself with the Romanian peasantry and its folk culture. Romanian folk culture embraces woodcarving and folk literary fables--both of which Brancusi incorporated in his sculptures. In my opinion, Brancusi's wood pedestals, such as the Endless Column, are based on wood funerary, decorative, and architectural motifs from Romanian villages. Brancusi was exposed to African art through his relationship with the New York avant-garde. The art dealers Alfred Stieglitz, Marius de Zayas, and Joseph Brummer exhibited Brancusi's sculptures in their galleries, in addition to exhibiting African art. Meanwhile, Brancusi's main patron John Quinn also collected African art. His interaction with the New York avant-garde led him to incorporate formal features of African sculpture, such as the oval forms of African masks, into his abstract sculptures. Brancusi also used African art to expose the racial prejudice of his time. African art, along with Romanian folk art, informed Brancusi's primitivism consistently throughout his long career as a modern sculptor.

Abstract:
The topic of this diploma thesis is body modification culture phenomenon called 'suspension'. It is a voluntary act of suspending a human body from hooks or piercings that have been temporarily pierced through the skin. Suspension is an age-old technique practiced for example by North American Indian Mandan tribe. It has been brought to the modern era and body modification culture by modern primitives. The part of the thesis is a placement of suspension to the broader sociocultural and historical context, there will be also space for development of concept of body, embodiment and pain in the western word and ritual aspect of suspension. The source for this work is mainly accessible literature, internet pages dedicated to body modifications and participant observation completed with interviews with people who had been suspended.

Abstract:
History of Tattooing: The Postmodern Era meets Archaism. The Culture of "Modern Primitives" dr. Martin Rychlík The presented dissertation concerns tattooing as the main theme - its history, functions, techniques, media presentations, individual motivation and general human attitudes towards decorating (and mutilating) the body. The author, ethnology / social anthropology student Martin Rychlik (Department of Ethnology Charles University in Prague), provides a comprehensive overview of many aspects of tattooing - considered as an universal cultural custom, so far poorely mapped in the Czech republic. Tattooing is a very complex and archaic phenomenon that has roots in the ancient Stone Age. The first direct archaeological proof was found in 1991, in Soelden near the Austro-Italian boarder. The mummified remains of a 5300 year-old hunter/shepherd emerged from a melting glacier and got nickname "Oetzi". Other well known tattooed mummies are the Egyptian Middle kingdom priestess Hathor and the frozen Scythian chief from Pazyryk. Many "primitive" tribes worldwide have adopted tattooing as a means of expression. Among the best documented are those of the Maori, Ainu, Samoans, Dayak, Tahiti islanders, Inuit, South American Indians and nomadic Siberian groups. The first so-called renaissance of tattoo is associated...

Abstract:
This dissertation is based on my research into distinction processes (Calhoun, 1994; Cerulo 1997) between tourists and inhabitants of West Sumba in Eastern Indonesia. The imaginiaries (Castoriadis, 1987; Strauss, 2006; Lacan, 1977; Anderson, 1991; Salazar, 2012) of West Sumbanese people about foreigners also emerge from diving rumors (Bysow, 1928; Allport and Postman, 1947/1965). Their origins, dissemination, and sharpening processes, as well as their consequences will be analysed herein. This case study demonstrates how mental models of otherness are formed and reified, how they clash, and for what purposes they may be utilized. It will also analyze how imaginaries influence behavior and may lead to miscommunication in West Sumba.
