Raubenheimer, Heidi. "Contributions to modern portfolio theory." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/9741.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.<br>Fund managers and investors are confronted with the problem of selecting a single investment portfolio from a large number of possible combinations of available assets. In South Africa the set of possible portfolios has become even larger with the gradual relaxing of the constraints on foreign investment from 1995 to the present day, thereby expanding the investment universe for South African investors. Moreover, portfolio selection in South Africa is being transformed increasingly from being the exclusive domain of high net worth individuals, trustees and their investment managers to being the domain and responsibility of the man on the street. The Unit Trust industry started in South Africa in 1965 and gave the lower net worth individual a vehicle with which to invest in a diverse investment portfolio. This industry has proved very popular and has expanded from only 8 funds in 1980 to 338 funds and 136 billion rands under management in November 2000. Moreover the past two years, 1999 and 2000, has seen a change in the pension fund industry from defined benefit (DB) to defined contribution (DC) pension funds, transferring more of the risk and the responsibility of portfolio selection onto pension fund members. With increasing demand for fund management and investment advice by pension fund members and individual investors alike, the financial services industry in South Africa has also expanded. The consequent competition for assets of all descriptions have led, one hopes, to a more efficient market in equity, fixed income and derivative products. Thus modern portfolio theory has come a long way and will have to go further in meeting the demand to assist investors in their decision making.

Georgescu, Andreea S. M. Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Inventory positioning in modern retail." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/130727.

Abstract:
Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Operations Research Center, February, 2021<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 119-122).<br>Modern retail has been significantly affected by the surge in online platforms and product options. Customers have comfortably settled into an omni-channel model, in which they buy different products through different channels. While customers expect a seamless process in getting the products they are looking for, they are also more influenced by the selection offered when unsure of what to buy. For retailers, the transition to omnichannel means more complex problems of inventory positioning and demand fulfillment, but also an opportunity to influence their customers through the assortments they offer, especially online. In this thesis, we study two main challenges related to inventory positioning in omni-channel and provide new models and algorithms. First, we study the problem of choice modeling and assortment optimization. Choice models aim to capture customer preferences across products and have been extensively studied.<br>Whereas numerous models have been proposed, few are tractable, and many have been shown to be limited in capturing customer preferences, due to their underlying assumptions on consumer behavior. In the first part of this thesis, we introduce a new class of models, which we call synergistic, and show both theoretically and empirically, that these models dominate all existing ones in capturing consumer preferences. We show the associated optimization problems for the synergistic models are NP-hard, but provide IP-based algorithms, which are reasonably tractable in practice. Finally, we show that these models can be represented as ReLU activated neural networks. Therefore, state of the art methods in the neural networks field can be leveraged to efficiently estimate these models and optimize over them, to inform assortment optimization decisions.<br>In the second part of the thesis, we focus on inventory planning for a physical retailer, considering the complex dynamics in the store involving the backroom, and the need to minimize its use. The question is motivated by our collaborator, a large US retail chain, striving to leverage their store assets as shipping hubs. We present a case study of working with real data to understand the complexities of this question and identify steps a retailer can take to become leaner.<br>by Andreea Georgescu.<br>S.M.<br>S.M. King, Angela Ph D. Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Regression under a modern optimization lens." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/98719.

Abstract:
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Operations Research Center, 2015.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 131-139).<br>In the last twenty-five years (1990-2014), algorithmic advances in integer optimization combined with hardware improvements have resulted in an astonishing 200 billion factor speedup in solving mixed integer optimization (MIO) problems. The common mindset of MIO as theoretically elegant but practically irrelevant is no longer justified. In this thesis, we propose a methodology for regression modeling that is based on optimization techniques and centered around MIO. In Part I we propose a method to select a subset of variables to include in a linear regression model using continuous and integer optimization. Despite the natural formulation of subset selection as an optimization problem with an lo-norm constraint, current methods for subset selection do not attempt to use integer optimization to select the best subset. We show that, although this problem is non-convex and NP-hard, it can be practically solved for large scale problems. We numerically demonstrate that our approach outperforms other sparse learning procedures. In Part II of the thesis, we build off of Part I to modify the objective function and include constraints that will produce linear regression models with other desirable properties, in addition to sparsity. We develop a unified framework based on MIO which aims to algorithmize the process of building a high-quality linear regression model. This is the only methodology we are aware of to construct models that imposes statistical properties simultaneously rather than sequentially. Finally, we turn our attention to logistic regression modeling. It is the goal of Part III of the thesis to efficiently solve the mixed integer convex optimization problem of logistic regression with cardinality constraints to provable optimality. We develop a tailored algorithm to solve this challenging problem and demonstrate its speed and performance. We then show how this method can be used within the framework of Part II, thereby also creating an algorithmic approach to fitting high-quality logistic regression models. In each part of the thesis, we illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach on both real and synthetic datasets.<br>by Angela King.<br>Ph. D.

Copenhaver, Martin Steven. "Sparsity and robustness in modern statistical estimation." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/119279.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Operations Research Center, 2018.<br>This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 219-230).<br>Two principles at the forefront of modern machine learning and statistics are sparse modeling and robustness. Sparse modeling enables the construction of simpler statistical models, with examples including the Lasso and matrix completion. At the same time, statistical models need to be robust--they should perform well when data is noisy--in order to make reliable decisions. While sparsity and robustness are often closely related, the exact relationship and subsequent trade-offs are not always transparent. For example, convex penalties like the Lasso are often motivated by sparsity considerations, yet the success of these methods is also driven by their robustness. In this thesis, we develop new statistical methods for sparse and robust modeling and clarify the relationship between these two principles. The first portion of the thesis focuses on a new methodological approach to the old multivariate statistical problem of Factor Analysis: finding a low-dimensional description of covariance structure among a set of random variables. Here we propose and analyze a practically tractable family of estimators for this problem. Our approach allows us to exploit bilinearities and eigenvalue structure and thereby show that convex heuristics obtain optimal estimators in many instances. In the latter portion of the thesis, we focus on developing a unified perspective on various penalty methods employed throughout statistical learning. In doing so, we provide a precise characterization of the relationship between robust optimization and a more traditional penalization approach. Further, we show how the threads of optimization under uncertainty and sparse modeling come together by focusing on the trimmed Lasso, a penalization approach to the best subset selection problem. We also contextualize the trimmed Lasso within the broader penalty methods literature by characterizing the relationship with usual separable penalty approaches; as a result, we show that this estimation scheme leads to a richer class of models.<br>by Martin Steven Copenhaver.<br>Ph. Manale, Blake. "The State and Place of Mindfulness in Modern Research." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2018. https://scholarworks.uno.edu/honors_theses/110.

Abstract:
Originally derived from Eastern religions, the concept of mindfulness has been adapted and validated by psychology and medical science within recent decades. This project describes some of the religious viewpoints associated with mindfulness and its related practices, such as meditation. The primary focus however, are the forays into scientific study using validated methodology to understand what mindfulness can and cannot affect as it relates to physical and mental health. The initial studies serve as proof of concept and cover simple reductions in symptomology and suffering for conditions like anxiety and depression. The scope of mindfulness application grew as research progressed, leading to more focused studies involving the extreme stress of medical students, the lifespan of the elderly, and autobiographical memory for those in remission who had depression. Like all respectable scientific experimentation, having the ability to quantify the results and observations seen is accounted for by these studies. Furthermore, a cohesive model and adapted measurement scale are discussed to denote the clout carried by mindfulness and related practices. In closing, discussion of current research directions are given along with a re-emphasis of conclusions established in the literature.

Abstract:
Modern chemistry has reached the level of molecular research, which made it possible to reveal the mechanisms of many processes in a living organism, synthesize substances that do not exist in nature, and decipher the genetic mechanisms of heredity. The development of the production of both biologically derived and biodegradable polymers cannot be stopped. Nowadays biopolymers in many areas represent a serious alternative to traditional polymeric materials. The notion that they are not competitive will not hold out for a long time. What is more, they certainly will not become a panacea for all environmental problems. The concept of biopolymers as 100% resource conserving agents is also premature. However, they open up new prospects in the post-oil era.

Anttila, T. (Tero). "The power of antiquity:the Hyperborean research tradition in early modern Swedish research on national antiquity." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2015. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526207148.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract My thesis focuses on the incorporation of Hyperboreans, a mythical classical race, into the prevailing Gothic or Geatic narrative of national history in seventeenth and eighteenth century Swedish historiography. The beatific Hyperboreans were identified with ancient Swedes to emphasise that the Gothic ancestors of Sweden’s rulers had not been mere mediaeval barbarians. The most extreme proponents of this Hyperborean research tradition claimed that a high culture had thrived in Sweden before classical antiquity. They asserted that traces of this highly-developed northern civilisation could be found in the Bible, classical writings and mediaeval historiography, as well as the domestic antiquities such as runestones and Old Norse writings. By close-reading published and unpublished writings of historians and antiquaries, I examined the overarching and shared distinctive features within this Hyperborean research tradition. This involved an analysis of the main content of this research tradition in its learned, mostly Western European historiographical setting. I focused especially on understanding the Hyperborean research tradition within the intellectual traditions of constructing fabulous pasts. The seventeenth century was a period of institutionalisation of historical and antiquarian research in Sweden and Europe. Hence, I also studied the role of specific politico-historical and institutional conditions in the emergence, development and decline of the Hyperborean research tradition. By combining these two approaches, I attempted to strike a balance between research on long-term intellectual traditions and short-term immediate situations in which the ideas about the Hyperboreans were developed and used. Ultimately my thesis illustrates that the Hyperborean research tradition was a fairly coherent tradition of research. It arose in the early seventeenth century as part of the political pursuits and problems of Swedish monarchs in the domestic front and the Baltics. The tradition dominated Swedish historiography during the period of Swedish absolutism (1690–1720), before gradually crumbling from 1730s onwards. The emergence, development and decline of the Hyperborean research tradition were all a result of complex historiographical and politico-institutional factors<br>Tiivistelmä Keskityn väitöskirjassani 1600- ja 1700-lukujen ruotsalaisen historiankirjoituksen ilmiöön, jossa antiikin kirjoitusten myyttiset hyperborealaiset sisällytettiin niin kutsuttuun goottilaiseen historianarratiiviin.

Abstract:
Introduction Placebos have been used in medical treatments since the dawn of medicine. The placeboeffect is referred to as a beneficial effect of a treatment which cannot be attributed to thepharmacological component of the treatment given. Aim and Method We attempt to understand the current research regarding the placebo effect, its mechanismsand driving factors. We utilize hermeneutics, text-based analytics and argument analysis toanswer our ethical questions regarding the usage of placebo and the placebo effect. Results Classical conditioning and expectation have been accredited as the two most prominentfactors driving a placebo effect. Recent research focuses on identifying minor factorsinfluencing these prominent factors. Through modern imaging techniques researchers haveidentified physiological responses to the placebo effect. We pose four different ways in which a placebo treatment option could be considered ineveryday medicine. We also discuss whether the placebo effect should be used for itsbeneficial effects in all medical treatments, and how this could affect medicine and healthcarepractitioners. Conclusion Current research provides us with substantial evidence that the placebo effect has aphysiological component. It also provides us with explanations as to how this effect can beutilized in every day medical care. The placebo effect can even be utilized without deceivingthe patient which has always been the biggest argument against incorporating it in day to daymedicine. However, there is still lacking evidence of when a placebo effect can be utilized toits full potential which limits its current clinical applications.

Abstract:
After the completion of the human genome project in April 2003, the continuous flow of sequencing data and the development of new databases began to transform the field of genomics into data-driven science. Bioinformatics analyses raw experimental data with the aim to obtain information describing biological processes, thus providing a powerful tool to investigate specific molecular and genetic mechanisms. This domain knowledge in combination with genomics allows to decipher the interrelationships between genes, regulatory elements, metabolic pathways, and protein interactions. Deep learning, a subdiscipline of machine learning, has been recently applied to the field of genomics, leading to remarkable results. The two main objectives of this study were: the development and application of bioinformatic tools for the study of the genetic basis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, and the usage of deep learning techniques for the identification of small non-coding RNA elements in the human genome. This dissertation provides a comprehensive overview of the recent evolution of genomics as an interdisciplinary field of research strongly associated with computer science and data analysis.

Full text
Abstract:
Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is an attractive approach for mycobacteria diagnosis and epidemiological studies. It provides the potential for a rapid method that produces detailed information and could theoretically be used as a routine tool in clinical settings. This thesis focuses on the benefits and challenges involved in transforming molecular approaches into practical clinical mycobacteriology in general, and in particular WGS, as well as examining how it might be implemented. We first set out to improve the quantification of viable mycobacteria cells in vitro and make the molecular bacterial load assay (MBLA) sensitive enough to use in future clinical trials that monitor treatment response. The results showed the assay is rapid and accurate in its detection and count of viable bacteria. WGS was tested with different types of mycobacteria species to address different epidemiological questions. WGS not only provides a higher resolution result than traditional epidemiological methods but it can rapidly identify an outbreak, thus simplifying the investigation and reducing the cost. WGS accurately identified the sources of TB recurrence and could therefore have a potential role in determining the endpoints for clinical trials. Rapid genotyping of species in this way has been demonstrated in our studies. In addition, WGS has the ability to, in most circumstances, predict TB drug resistance. This could also prove very beneficial from a clinical standpoint. We used different approaches in our studies; for example, single nucleotide polymorphism threshold methods and the creation of a putative outbreak reference genome, which can be used in future outbreak investigations. WGS is a cost-effective, high-resolution method with a short turnaround. This makes it potentially usable as a routine tool in clinical settings and reference laboratories. Future studies are needed to improve the mycobacterial genome sequencing procedure, analysis and bioinformatics in order to implement WGS in clinical practice.

Abstract:
Modern enterprises are constantly under change in the effort to enhance their internal operations and become more competitive in the market. A change process is always a challenge, and its success needs to consider multi-angled approaches, as it affects all involved stakeholders. The way changes are tack- led is fundamental to the success and survivability of an enterprise. Change is interwoven with risks, and therefore it has to be effectively managed in order to be successful. This work presents an effort to identify the key factors that should be con- sidered in order to lead to effective change management in modern enter- prises, and quantify their relationship to it. The theoretical investigation re- veals that key factors often considered, both in theory and in practical change management strategies, include Employee, Leadership, Training &amp; Develop- ment, Reward &amp; Recognition, Culture, Politics, Information Systems. Driven by these findings, a model is proposed that depicts their correlation towards effective change management. Subsequently, a survey is conducted, and sta- tistical analysis is performed to the empirical data collected, in order to eval- uate the proposed model and its hypotheses. The empirical results indicate that all selected key factors, contribute towards achieving effective change management as hypothesized. The results of this work, may benefit enterprise managers planning, exe- cuting and assessing change processes, as proper considerations of the factors discussed throughout this work may increase the chances of the change pro- cess success, resulting in a better performing and competitive enterprise.

Wallace, Leonelle. "Tryst Tropique: Pacific Texts, Modern Sexualities." Thesis, University of Auckland, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/2279.

Full text
Abstract:
Tryst Tropique questions some of the assumptions that have been made about the heterosexual trajectory described by European desire as it has informed literary, artistic and anthropological representation of the South Pacific. It reads a series of contact encounters and Pacific residencies for their unfolding of European sexual inscription and discovers their inevitable entanglement with problematics of homosexual definition. This thesis arcs between two readings wherein the sexual conduct of Polynesian men both requires and escapes European definition. The first, which settles on the documents of Cook's third voyage, uses British indifference to Hawaiian sodomitical desire to help measure a representational space from whence the European homosexual will emerge (Chapter Two). The next reading considers the erotics of male visibility legible across a number of Marquesan contact texts including Herman Melville's Typee (Chapter Three). Chapter Four discovers that the suspicion of sodomitical misconduct which clouded the career of William Yate, an early nineteenth-century New Zealand missionary, continues to involve twentieth-century commentators in the interpretative dynamics of sexual entrapment. Chapter Five turns to Gauguin's Tahitian writings and paintings to engage with the place of ambivalence in contemporary analyses of colonial discourse. Chapter Six extends the parameters of the thesis in terms of gender and of geography, taking up the controversy generated by Derek Freeman around the early Samoan fieldwork of Margaret Mead. It argues that in the example of Mead's career, we can observe the way in which female sexuality acts as the cipher by which culture multiplies and maintains ignorances and knowledges across the discursive field of sex in both cosmopolitan and primitive locations. The final chapter, which analyses a contemporary documentary representation of Samoan fa'afafine, finds the pertinence or applicability of European sexual description to Polynesian behaviour again at stake, though now we find that the liberal gesture of cultural relativism is co-optable to a homophobia already drilled and proficient in erecting a difference without to forestall a difference within. Reading against the grain of much postcolonial work on the South Pacific, Tryst Tropique finds that it is the male body-whether native or European-not the female, which provides the sexual vanishing point which structures many of these narratives. In each of these Pacific moments a privileged figuration occurs: the body which stands as a placemarker for erotic capacities-both indulged and forsworn-is indicatively male. These inscriptions of masculinity betray a certain amplifying anxiety; the discrepant sexual availabilities recorded in each text break with increasing urgency on the shore of heterosexual and homosexual definition. Even as these Pacific journal keepers, these writers and artists, map identity more and more ferociously onto the known grid of gender, it seems as if the horizon of sexual certainty further and further recedes.

Abstract:
The Pacific is the part of the world that was last settled by humans. The colonization occurred in different stages which can be discerned through various methods, one of them DNA analysis of humans as well as other species of animals and plants associated with human settlement. The direction of human migration is traditionally believed to have taken a west-eastern direction, originating in the area near Taiwan and spreading eastward until reaching the islands of Remote Oceania. However, there are also strong indications of an east-western route of interaction, with recent DNA studies confirming prehistoric human contact between South American and Polynesian peoples. The aim of this paper is to investigate the current research on human settlement of the Pacific focusing on the genetic analyses of humans as well as animals and plants believed to have accompanied the human settlers. It is to be hoped that this research survey will shed new light on the subject of geographical origins of Pacific migration and the early interactions and settlement patterns that ensued.<br>Oceanien blev den sista världsdelen att befolkas av människan.

Valverde, Sarah Hatheway. "THE MODERN SEX DOLL-OWNER: A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2012. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/849.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last fifteen years, the sex doll industry has grown from producing inexpensive novelty items to creating a multimillion-dollar global industry featuring high- quality, realistic love dolls. These dolls are designed and advertised for sexual stimulation, companionship, artistic representations of human fantasy, and other creative pursuits, such as photography. Made of flesh-like silicone, modern sex dolls sell from $3,500-$10,000. The use of human simulacra for sexual stimulation is an enduring practice. However, the psychological community has said little on the subject. Early sexologists briefly reference Agalmatophilia or Statuphilia, a rare sexual attachment to statues. Today, the sex doll phenomenon appears increasingly prevalent across the globe. Media coverage of this phenomenon has been featured in online magazines, television programs, music, documentaries and major motion pictures. More often than not, sex doll-ownership is portrayed as pathological. Sex doll-owners are members of a marginalized population, and accessing the population is challenging as many members of the community wish to remain anonymous for fear of judgment, persecution, and psychiatric labeling. The purpose of this study was to increase psychology’s understanding of this interesting and growing population. Specifically, a 45-item online survey addressing demographics was constructed and assessed. Additionally, participants were asked to describe their relationship status, doll-ownership status, and satisfaction with human and sex doll partners, including sexual satisfaction and performance. Quality of life was also assessed via the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Sixty-one participants were recruited from an online doll-owner community forum. It was hypothesized that most doll-owners sampled would be middle-aged, White, single, heterosexual males who are neither significantly better nor worse in terms of psycho-sexual functioning and life satisfaction than the general population. Descriptive data and statistical analysis partially supported the hypotheses. Implications and future direction are discussed, as are methodological considerations.

Cui, Xiaojuan. "Research of trace gases detection methods based on mid-infrared modern photonic instruments." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Littoral, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011DUNK0519.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis includes two parts: Development and application of a continuous-wave quantum cascade laser (CW-QCL) based instrument for measurements and study of nitrous acid (HONO) and a broadly tunable mid-infrared laser system based on difference frequency generation (DFG) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) for trace gas ( HCl, CH2O, HONO) monitoring. The OH radical is one of the key species in photochemical cycles responsible for ozone formation, which can lead to the so-called "photochemical smog" pollution. The hydroxyl radical also drives the oxidation of hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. Gaseous nitrous acid (HONO) is a major source of the OH radical in the early morning and daytime. So HONO directly affects the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere and indirectly contributes to secondary pollutants which are products of that oxidation. High accurate and precise concentration measurement of the atmospheric HONO requires high sensitivity and stability, good temporal and spatial resolution. One part of this thesis has been firstly devoted to the design of an optical instrument based on a continuous-wave (CW) quantum cascade laser (QCL) operating at 8 μm (~1255 cm ֿ ¹) for HONO detection. The sensitivity and specificity of the instrument were evaluated and described using HONO sample generated by chemical reaction of H₂SO₄ and NaNO₂. The generated HONO concentration was quantified by means of a denuder system associated with a conventional NOX analyzer. Moreover, within the limits of the QCL frequency, only 5 absorption line intensities of HONO can be found from the reference, so we measured the relative frequencies and line intensities of the remaining absorption lines especially the one which was used to do trace gas measurement. Line strengths of 19 stronger absorption lines observed are found to be around (3-90)×10-21 cm. Direct absorption spectroscopy technique combined with a 125 m multi-pass cell was applied to develop trace gas detection of HONO. In order to improve the sensitivity, wavelength modulation technique was applied, the minimum detectable HONO concentration resulting in a noise-equivalent signal was found to be about 400 ppt in 1 second integration time and fit for field measurements. HONO losses resulted from the optical cell wall was experimentally investigated. The rate constant of HONO determined in the present work might be helpful for field measurements of HONO, especially the measurements using absorption cell. Finally, the QCL-based instrument developed in the present work has been evaluated with in-door simultaneous measurements of HONO and i i CH4. The concentration of the two species obtained in the laboratory were 116 ppb and 1.5 ppm, and the corresponding 1 σ minimum detectable concentrations (MDC) in 1-second integration time are 396 ppt and 6 ppb for HONO and CH4, respectively. The other part of this thesis is focused on highly sensitive trace gas detection employing a room-temperature, broadly tunable and narrow linewidth mid-infrared difference frequency generation laser source. The mid-infrared laser system is based on quasi-phase-matched (QPM) and DFG with a multi-grating temperature-controlled periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) crystal employing two near-infrared diode lasers as pump sources. The mid-infrared coherent radiation is tunable from 3.2 μm to 3.7 μm. Detection of HCl, CH2O has been carried out. According to the absorption band (3590 cm-1) of HONO from references, another DFG laser sources employing a Ti: Sapphire laser and an Yb fiber laser as pump sources was developed, and the output frequency calibration was carried out using pure CO2 gas. HONO measurement in this wavelength range will be performed in the next work<br>本论文主要包括两个部分:一是基于室温连续波量子级联激光器光源,设 计并搭建了一套测量HONO 气体的系统,然后用该系统进行了HONO 气体的 探测和研究。

Abstract:
Despite the extensive research conducted on second language (L2) learning over the years, there is no emerging distinct choice of L2 learning approach or strategy that single-handedly facilitates beginning second language learning. Research that seek to find out how beginning L2 learning is best facilitated could make language learning more effective and help retain students who drop-out. This investigation was undertaken as an action research study. It sought to investigate which L2 learning strategy, oral or writing, is a better introduction of French as a L2. Participants involved in the study were beginning students in an Oral class and in a Writing class. Language performance tests, attitude surveys, interview, and journals were used to collect data. The study involved qualitative, quantitative, and a case study. No significant difference was found between oral and writing strategy introduction of L2 French for beginners in reading, vocabulary, and composition. However, learners in the Oral class did slightly better than the Writing class in listening activities. Role-playing and interviewing were two distinct positive teaching approaches that emerged after the treatment.

Full text
Abstract:
This socio-linguistic study investigates attitudes of French speakers of English to using English for academic purposes. The study is situated within the post-Fioraso Law period (2013), which sees France joining the process described as the ‘internationalisation' of Higher Education in Europe. This study confirms that rather than encouraging multiple languages in academia, the term ‘internationalisation' implies ‘Englishisation' in Europe by contributing to studies which show how English is instrumental to academic identity in Europe. Through the use of complementary qualitative methods (questionnaires, interviews, visual methods and classroom observations), the narratives of 164 academics working at the science faculties of Nantes University were analysed for how they positioned their professional identities in relation to the use of English for professional purposes (such as writing research papers, presenting at conferences, and teaching in English as a medium of instruction, EMI). The major divisions regarding the attitudes towards English as a medium of academic identity in France are to be found in the issues relating to the legitimacy and authority of French speakers of English within the wider international academic community. The principal arguments are based on beliefs concerning the ownership of the English language and whether it is possible for L2 speakers of English to ever identify themselves as being anything other than ‘learners of English', despite repeated proof of their language expertise. The study concludes that within French Higher Education in 2016, English is a strategic medium through which to access research and teaching communities. Ownership of the English language as an identifying feature comes second to the emerging bilingual identities of the participants who are competing in the global market of Higher Education.

Abstract:
By taking learning as the axis of scholarship, personal and social epistemologies have a common ground: experience and reflective action. I am not considering learning as a vehicle whose success is measured to the extent that a portion of the external world is appropriated, but as a qualitatively different way to see, understand and handle experience. A scholarship of learning is tightly bound to the experiential roots of objects of study that keep on changing in individual and collective histories. Therefore, a scholarship of learning is not a set of context-free skills but a complex process of transformation of its practitioners’ identity and agency over themselves and their object of study. Such two-fold construction orientates a discipline no less than the ways of knowing, acting and being of those engaged in its investigation. I propose that the object of study of Modern Languages and Cultures should be literacy in the multilayered symbolic codes (some of which are tacit) that make intercultural interchanges intelligible and effective. The scope of this dissertation, however, is restricted to the investigation of deep learning in literacy. My thesis is that Modern Languages and Cultures should not be limited to objects of study, such as language, discourse, texts, films, etc. but has to include the processes of agentification of the learner and making sense of his or her experience in a foreign language and culture. I advocate the investigation of the experiential roots of language and culture in a scholarship of learning which seeks to integrate research and education, on the one hand, and language and content, on the other. Experience and learning are subjective-objective processes, and so I advise the epistemological revaluation of subjectivity. I propose that subjectification (i.e. the construction of the subject) is not only relevant for human development and social well-being, but is a source of knowledge in the Humanities.

Abstract:
A number of philosophical questions, all connected to modern research in quantum gravity, are discussed in this dissertation. The goal of research in quantum gravity is to find a quantum theory for gravitation; the other fundamental forces are already understood in terms of quantum physics. Quantum gravity is studied within a number of different research programmes. The most popular are string theory and loop quantum gravity; besides these a number of other approaches are pursued. Due to the lack of empirical support, it is relevant to assess the scientific status of this research. This is done from four different points of view, namely the ones held by: logical positivists, Popper, Kuhn and Lakatos. It is then argued that research in quantum gravity may be considered scientific, conditional on scientists being open with the tentative and speculative nature of their pursuits. Given the lack of empirical progress, in all approaches to quantum gravity, a pluralistic strategy is advised. In string theory there are different theoretical formulations, or dualities, which are physically equivalent. This is relevant for the problem of underdetermination of theories by data, and the debate on scientific realism. Different views on the dualities are possible. It is argued that a more empiricist view on the semantics of theories, than what has been popular lately, ought to be adopted. This is of importance for our understanding of what the theories tell us about space and time. In physics and philosophy, the idea that there are worlds or universes other than our own, has appeared in different contexts. It is discussed how we should understand these different suggestions; how they are similar and how they are different. A discussion on, how and when theoretical multiverse scenarios can be empirically testable, is also given. The reliability of thought experiments in physics in general and in quantum gravity in particular is evaluated. Thought experiments can be important for heuristic purposes, but in the case of quantum gravity, conclusions based on thoght experiments are not very reliable.

In Tafuri''s critical history philosophy and criticism, "architecture" is not only the fragile constructure technician, the experience of sight, form and style, but also include the whole culture, history, the process of social symbolization, convert of mythology, style, characteristic, fashion etc, the most point of architecture criticism is to rebuild and disbuild the continuous plan of imaginable process. However, "architecture criticism" is a process of recognization, also is objective execution of subjective ideology. Most people can understand the work due to bring inborn sense , meanwhile, by experence accumulation, most people can achieve objective criticism using comparative analysis due to the difference between sense background and thoughtful culture cause the pluralistic development of criticism thought. Therefore, architecture criticism of subjective ideology will face emptiness of none definite opinion, I think, only rely upon reflection and considerations of historical philosophy can face emptiness. Although few scholar considered that statement of architecture criticism always can not complete with everthing and without enough satisfactory and limitation. However, I think that architecture criticism can remove human thoughful shackles and achieve communication between social strata. This kind of critical historical opion and dialectic consideration are continuous reformatory modernism. Concerning condition and essence of modern architecture, I think which can not define to any type, every period has modern concept and technician, which are smash and detached ideology and productive process, also are a kind of continuous, laborious, multiply endlessly, random critical modernity. Current development of modern architecture is a revolution which is dependent on modernity. Therefore, architecture criticism is the modern statement under review different space representation and distinguish, communication, criticism and reverse of space culture type. According to abstract acknowledge build and concrete space practice, research objective foundation in pluralistic ideology.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中興大學<br>都市計劃研究所<br>87<br>With the globalization and internationalization in Taiwan, the economic structure of Taiwan has changed dramatically. In the beginning, there were more E.O.I. in Taiwan, but nowadays there are more strategic industries. While the public and private sectors are working on High-Technical Industry, there are other industries booming at the same time─“Service” and “Modern Cultural Industry (M.C.I.)”. According to related research, “Service” and “M.C.I.” are growing and will become an important role on the stage of economic development. There are some significant achievements about “Service” research, but there are not so much research about “M.C.I.”. Furthermore, there are just little research about the interaction between the M.C.I. and space. Therefore, this thesis analyzes the M.C.I. of Taiwan from 1981 till now to realize their development, location, and interaction, then point out the planning meaning. This research paper studies the meaning of M.C.I. and the related article about the relationship between this industry and the development of city and region to build the thinking structure and logic, and be the theoretical foundation of later sections. The second part mainly analyze the “Cultural Industry Production System (C.I.P.S.)” in Taiwan area. After the clarification and analysis of the general statistic data, we discuss the situation of M.C.I. and the general status of location, and find out more about the phenomena of the development of this industry in Taiwan. The third part gives us an example of Taipei metropolis to discuss M.C.I.’s different situation in Taipei metropolis. Through the result of statistic and interviews, discover the interaction relationship of C.I.P.S. The last part focuses on the result and points out the meaning of space planning to provide relative sectors suggestion about the environment planning of M.C.I. Finally, we can get some important conclusions: 1. The M.C.I. have become an important role in the economic development of Taiwan. 2. The M.C.I. almost locate in main cities of Taiwan., especially in Taipei metropolis. The percentage of M.C.I. is above 40. 3. Because Taipei metropolis plays the leader role of M.C.I., the M.C.I. of Taiwan still centralizes in Taipei metropolis. 4. The C.I.P.S. groups keep an “beneficial and dependent relationship”. Reflection on the space level , this kind of relationship makes the M.C.I. become more rely on each other. Thus, it cannot be away from Taipei metropolis.

碩士<br>國立臺南藝術大學<br>民族音樂學研究所<br>99<br>The thesis is dedicated to the studies of Japanese shakuhachi, offering the historical overview ranging from some point prior to the Meiji era to modern Kinko Ryu, Myoan Ryu, and Tozan Ryu in the Meiji era to thoroughly understand Japanese shakuhachi from the pathway of the shakuhachi making techniques. The content of this thesis is comprised in three parts. The first part is the literature review of ancient shakuhachi, hitoyogiri shakuhachi, fuke shakuhachi and the socio-cultural background of the Japanese society. The second part deals with the historical transition of fuke shakuhachi from a sacred instrument to a secular musical instrument in 1871 in wake of Fuke Zen being banned in Japan. A rather significant change hence occurred in the making techniques and the temperament of shakuhachi in order to meet the need of playing profane shakuhachi. This thesis aims to analyze through the notation the rise of three main schools of shakuhachi performance and the relevant techniques of shakuhachi making during the Meiji era. The third part focuses on the postwar composition of shakuhachi music, trying to explore its infusion with other types of music. Several fieldworks are conducted to interview some contemporary shakuhachi makers/players to understand the playing skills of three main schools and shakuhachi making and, more importantly, craftsman’s expertise and the relevant social function.

碩士<br>國立臺北教育大學<br>文化創意產業經營學系<br>100<br>Abstract Taiwanese performing arts companies not only face the market competition from domestic and foreign related companies, but also assiduously withstand the fierce strikes from the economic atmosphere as a whole. Even with government support and corporate sponsorship, only a more proactive, ambitious expansion of the market as well as an increased level of service, can the Taiwanese performing arts companies minimize the risk and develop sustainable business opportunities. Gerrand, Priscilla. "An African community's attitude towards modern, western adoption." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/7189.

Full text
Abstract:
M.A.<br>South Africa has thousands of destitute children without families to care for them. The bulk of such children are, at this time, born to impoverished and destitute African women. Many such children have been abandoned. In the years to come we must in addition expect a huge influx of children whose parents have died from or become incapacitated by Aids. These children will also need families to care for them. Adoption is an effective way of creating permanent homes for these children. However, there is currently a dearth of prospective African adopters in the Gauteng Province. Numerous assumptions have been put forward to explain this problemsituation. Some people think that it may be related to traditional norms of the African culture which emphasize the importance of blood ties when it comes to family building. In traditional African culture it was inconceivable that blood ties could be extinguished, or that someone totally strange, let alone someone from a different clan, could parent your child. The majority of modern, western adoptions, involve the legal adoption of children who are not related in any way to the people adopting them. An adoption order vests the parental rights and duties in the adopters and is irrevocable. The adoption order extinguishes natural parental rights with respect to any other person vis-a'-vis the child. Mother cause for concern, is the fact that when African adopters legally adopt children, the majority tend to very secretative about the whole affair. They usually do not acknowledge the adopted child's biological origins because they wish to protect the child and themselves from a negative response by the general community. It is important to tell children they are adopted because children have a right to the truth about themselves. Enduring relationships are built on honesty, not deception. When there has been secrecy in a family about adoption, everyone suffers. The community has a responsibility to provide support and resources to families formed by adoption. Recognizing that support from the community for an adoption service will not be forthcoming unless the community is positively oriented towards such a service, this study seeks to explore and describe the contemporary attitudes of an African community towards the concept of modern, western adoption. The Soweto community is the largest African community in South African. In order to explore the attitudes of people in this community towards the concept of modern, western adoption, a descriptive survey has been conducted. A sample of 163 people was drawn from the Vista University and the Soweto Home for the Aged. A selfadministered questionnaire was used as the method for data collection. Although generalizations to the greater African population cannot be made because a non-probability sampling method was used in this study, findings indicate that the majority of community members in Soweto probably have a positive attitude towards the concept of modern, western adoption. It is hoped that this attitude will have a directive influence on their future behaviour. There must thus be an ongoing effort to expand adoption opportunities for African children in need of permanent homes and members of the community must be directly involved in these efforts.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>建築系<br>95<br>Architect C. Y. Lee, who is famous for his architectural interpretations which incorporate Chinese cultural identity, can be described as one of the most representative architects in Taiwan’s history of contemporary architecture. He is the most prolific and aggressive architect to address the issue of “Chinese identity” in architectural design. Unlike other contemporary Taiwanese architects who focus on interpretations of public projects, he interprets modern Chinese architecture in buildings in both the public and private sector with similar enthusiasm and lays particular stress on commercial buildings. His recent designs of “Chinese skyscraper” have transformed commercial buildings as media of making a cultural manifesto. He is also one of the few architects trying to build an architectural treatise for modern Chinese architectural design. However, there is no thorough discussion on his architectural presentations so far; which engenders the motive of this research. This dissertation is an attempt to reveal Lee’s ideas and design strategies in modern Chinese architectural design. The framework of discussion is constructed on the context of the interaction between Western and Chinese architectural thoughts and on the development of modern Chinese architecture to investigate Lee’s development in both practice and architectural treatise. The dissertation is developed in six chapters. The first chapter summarizes research objects, study methods, the general outlines, and the development of modern Chinese architectural trends. The second chapter discusses C.Y. Lee’s personal background regarding family, education, and practices. The third chapter makes a thorough discussion of Lee’s development of modern Chinese architecture in both theoretical argumentation and architectural practice. The fourth chapter presents a detailed investigation on his interpretations of office buildings and skyscrapers. The fifth chapter takes the communication of cultural identity as a key issue to investigate the employment of architectural signs in Lee’s Taipei 101. The last chapter concludes Lee’s presentations of modern Chinese architecture by singling out how Lee’s particularity differs from other contemporary Chinese architects. Lee’s interpretations show distinct characteristics of transforming tradition: including the variety of employing tradition, the definition of traditional space as a dual spatial system (formal and informal), the vertical transformation of traditional spaces, and the development of idealistic interpretation and personal motifs. There is a dilemma of communicating cultural identity with the public in modern Chinese architectural designs. Lee has chosen a formalistic way to achieve the goal.
