Abstract:
This thesis studies the argument structure and formation of the very productive and frequent complex verbal structures in Modern Farsi (MF), i.e., Persian, known as compound verbs or Complex Predicates (CP). CPs are complex verbal structures made up of a preverbal element (PV) and a verb. The verbal element is normally a light, bleached, and/or backgrounded verb (LV). The PVs may belong to any of the lexical categories nouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, or to prepositional phrases (PP). The combinations of PVs and LVs form single semantic and syntactic verbal predicates that constitute

Abstract:
The dissertation investigates syntactic and semantic aspects of the indefinite pronoun system in Modern Hebrew and consists of an experimental part and a theoretical part. The experimental part presents the grammaticality judgment task conducted to test three theoretical questions: (1) the relation between negation and the licensing of AF `any' and KOL `any'; (2) the contrast between EYZE `some' and EYZESEHU `some' in terms of specificity; and (3) the correlation between syntactic position and free choice readings. Three main theoretical findings are contributed by this work. First, it is sho

Abstract:
Deprived urban areas regeneration is one of the most important challenges of our cities, which interest is recognised by International Urban Guidelines (ONU), as well as Leipzig Charter and Toledo Declaration (European Union). At this respect, systematic analysis of built city obsolescence is crucial to propose improvement strategies. In particular, mass housing estates, characteristic urban form from modern urbanism, have been detected by several studies as one of the most vulnerable urban forms. Moreover, several studies had determined the systemic nature of problems that this urban form has

Abstract:
Abstract Behaviors of many engineering systems are described by lumped parameter models that encapsulate the spatially distributed nature of the system into networks of lumped elements; the dynamics of such a network is governed by a system of ordinary differential and algebraic equations. Languages and simulation tools for modeling such systems differ in syntax, informal semantics, and in the methods by which such systems of equations are generated and simulated, leading to numerous interoperability challenges. We propose to unify semantics of all such systems using standard notions from alge

Abstract:
I propose a simple Unicode-based lexical syntax for programming language identifiers using characters from international scripts (currently Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Math). Such cosmopolitan identifiers are designed to achieve much of the simplicity of Fortran identifiers while acknowledging a modern international outlook. This seems particularly advantageous in contexts where such identifiers are not (only) used by professional programmers, but are exposed to normal users, for example through scriptable applications.
