In this report we evaluate modern mobile development technologies by producing criteria for the evaluation. We gathered the criteria by conducting a study of popular applications already developed. From these criteria we decided to evaluate development for Android, iOS as well as for web applications. The evaluation was made by making a simple application fetching data from an API of the courses available at KTH, as well as course information and schedule for the courses. Our conclusions were that if the application is simple, it may not be worth actually making it a native application.

Full text
Abstract:
The last decade, electronic voting has evolved from being a mean of counting votes to also offer the possibility of electronically casting votes. From recording votes using punch cards and optical scan systems, electronic voting has evolved into the use of direct-recording-electronic machines. Voting over the Internet has also become a hot research topic, and some implementation and testing have been done. Internet voting systems are significantly more vulnerable to threats from external attackers, than systems to cast ballots in controlled environments. Mechanisms to provide security, accuracy and verification are critical, and issues with coercion and usability also arise. In the first part of this thesis we give a theoretical study about existing electronic voting techniques, as well as requirements and security issues of modern electronic voting systems. We also give a brief background theory of some cryptographic mechanisms and systems. Secondly, we present two modern voting solutions in development. We have included security functionalities provided by the system, the cryptographic techniques used and some threats and attacks to the systems. These systems can be exposed to compromised computers, ballot stuffing, and corrupt infrastructure players, but are using cryptographic proofs to ensure accuracy and counter attacks. In the third part, we create a procedure and perform a usability test on one of these modern voting solutions. Our findings emphasize the fact that there is a tension between verifiable elections and usability. The voters have trust in the privacy and accuracy of such a voting systems if more guidance to utilize the means of verification is included, and a trusted third party verifies the system security. The advantages of electronic voting outweigh the risks. Internet voting is a term of further discussion and testing, but considering coercion and the insecure aspects of the medium, Internet voting will never be 100% safe. It is a question of trade off between the advantages and threats.

Abstract:
The thesis is an empirical case study to predict or estimate the performance and variability of contemporary software frameworks used for web application development. Thesis can be mainly divided into 3 phases. In Phase I, we theoretically try to explore and analyze PHP, EJB 3.0 and ASP.NET considering quality attributes or ilitis of mentioned technologies. In Phase II, we develop two identical web applications i.e. online component’s webstore (applications to purchase components online) in PHP and ASP.NET. In phase III, we conduct automated testing to determine and analyze applications’ performance. We developed web applications in PHP 5.3.0 and Visual Studio 2008 using ASP.NET 3.5 to practically measure and compare the applications’ performance. We used SQL Server 2005 with ASP.NET 3.5 and MySql 5.1.36 with PHP as database servers. Software architecture, CSS, database design, database constraints were tried to keep simple and same for both applications i.e.  Applications developed in PHP and ASP.NET. This similarity helps to establish realistic comparison of applications performance and variability. The applications’ performance and variability is measured with help of automated scripts. These scripts were used to generate thousands of requests on application servers and downloading components simultaneously. More details of performance testing can be found in chapter 6, 7 and 8.
We have gain alot of knowledge from this thesis. We are very happy to finish our Software Engineering.

Abstract:
Various different software tools are used when planning and executing spacecraft operations. European Space Agency’s Cluster II mission utilizes a web portal called “Cluster Web” for scheduling and overviewing mission events. A new version of this tool called “OpsWeb” is being developed using modern web techologies to improve usability and to make the tool adaptable to other missions in the future. A comparative user experience evaluation was done between Cluster Web and OpsWeb to find out how usability was improved. The results indicate that OpsWeb allows users to complete tasks faster and with less effort than Cluster Web, although some issues were discovered. Users also reported that they had a more positive experience using OpsWeb than Cluster Web. Feedback gathered from the evaluation includes some ideas for future development of OpsWeb

Particular attention has recently been paid to too large constant emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, which have a detrimental effect on the ozone layer, which in turn is becoming a major cause of climate change on the planet. Thus, humanity suffers from the negative effects of carbon dioxide, especially Ukraine suffers from this. Based on statistics, in 2018 in Ukraine CO2 emissions amounted to more than 225 thousand tons, and Kyiv as of March 2021 ranks 12th in the ranking of cities in the world in terms of air pollution. Undoubtedly, the logistics sector is involved in increasing these emissions, which account for about 15% of total CO2 emissions.

Abstract:
Modern large telescopes such as TAO, LSST, TMT and EELT require 0.9m-4m monolithic convex secondary mirrors. The fabrication and testing of these large convex secondary mirrors of astronomical telescopes is getting challenging as the aperture of the mirror is getting bigger. The biggest challenge to fabricate these large convex aspheric mirrors is to measure the surface figure to a few nanometers, while maintaining the testing and fabrication cycle to be efficient to minimize the downtime. For the last a couple of decades there was huge advancement in the metrology and fabrication of large aspheric secondary mirrors. College of Optical Sciences in the University Arizona developed a full fabrication and metrology process with extremely high accuracy and efficiency for manufacturing the large convex secondary mirrors. In this paper modern metrology systems including Swing-Arm Optical Coordinate Measuring System (SOCMM) which is comparable to Interferometry and a Sub-aperture stitching interferometry scalable to a several meters have been presented. Also a Computer Controlled Fabrication Process which produces extremely fine surface figure and finish has been demonstrated. These most recent development has been applied to the fabrication and testing of 0.9m aspheric convex secondary mirror for the Tokyo Atacama Observatory's 6.5m telescope and the result has been presented.

Hergueta, Santos-Olmo Cruz. "Modern fuels and catalytic technologies for low emissions in gasoline direct injection engines." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8432/.

Full text
Abstract:
The requirements for controlling Particulate Matter (PM) and gaseous emissions emitted from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, especially under cold start conditions, and the introduction of bio-alcohols fuels in the market demands the development of novel efficient aftertreatment technologies. Understanding the PM characteristics from the combustion of different fuels it is a key step in the design of next generation of catalysts and aftertreatment systems, including three-way catalyst (TWC) and catalyst coated or not gasoline particulate filters (GPFs). The research study presented in this thesis provides a detailed understanding of the synergies between bio-alcohols derived fuels combustion in GDI engines and novel aftertreatment technologies on the control of PM and gaseous emissions. The effect of the physico-chemical properties of bio-alcohol fuel blends on combustion and emissions at warm steady-state and cold start engine conditions has been investigated. Bio-butanol fuel blend has been further explored at different engine loads in combination with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology. An extensive characterization of the PM emissions has been carried out using several methodologies and techniques such as high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The combustion of bio-alcohols resulted in a significant reduction of 60% - 80% of PM emissions with the modification in their structural characteristics, leading to agglomerates with smaller primary particles (≈1-3 nm) and fractal dimensions and, soot with higher tortuosity (≈3.1 %) as TEM revealed. Under cold start event, bioalcohols emitted more reactive and less mature soot (i.e. higher organic content and impurities) as found from TGA and Raman analysis compared to soot emitted from gasoline fuel combustion. The TWC activity was improved between 4.3% and 1.5% in the exhaust stream from the bio-alcohols combustion. The aftertreatment architectures, including either coated GPFs or not and arrangement in the exhaust (i.e. upstream or downstream of the TWC) has shown a significantly impact on the TWC activity, reducing light-off temperatures up to 20°C. Catalytic GPF showed high performance to efficiently filter PM and removed gaseous emissions from GDI combustion with acceptable pressure drop.

Full text
Abstract:
Content: The toxicity and unpleasant smell of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas is an issue for the leather industry that has been contained rather than eliminated in tannery practice. Completely eliminating H2S from tanneries while maintaining practical and economically feasible processing is still a big challenge to be addressed. Significant progress has, though, been made by introducing robust and reliable low sulphide unhairing systems based on selective soaking and specific enzymatic liming auxiliaries. These systems allow the reduction of sodium sulphide offers from the typical 2.5% to 1% of pelt weight. These lower levels reduce the amount of hydrogen sulphide gas released into the environment from the liming float, as well as the amount of sulphide that is carried over in the hide to subsequent processing steps. Overall, the H2S problem is not eliminated, but significantly reduced with this technology. In a further evolution of the technology, organic thio compounds can be used to fully or partially replace the already low levels of sulphide required, and thus allow to operate with offers well below 1%, or even completely without inorganic sulphide. Due to their reductive power, the organic thio compounds react with keratin in a similar way as inorganic sulphides, but they are oxidized much faster, which is advantageous for the effluent load. Alternatively to, or in combination with organic thio compounds, H2S scavengers can be used to reduce or eliminate hyrogen sulphide released from liming floats. Different types of scavengers are available, but the selection is limited for technical and economic reasons. The paper on hand shows how the release of hydrogen sulphide from beamhouse operations can be effectively controlled by a combination of technologies involving more effective unhairing with lower amounts of reductive agents, replacement of inorganic sulphide by organic thio compound and the use of H2S scavengers. Take-Away: - The release of toxic H2S from Beamhouse operations can be effectively controlled using modern unhairing technologies allowing to use no or low sulphide. - These modern unhairing systems are based on a combination of selective soaking, unhairing assisted by enzymes with specific activity and the use of organic thio compounds.

Abstract:
Issue tracking is one of the vital parts in maintaining computer  systems.  It is utilized in anything from small independent companies to large enterprises. The tracking does not just provide developers and other personnel with crucial information regarding their systems current state, but additionally stores useful documentation if any error reoccurs in the future. However, if the tracking issue would be deficient in some way, the complete process of developing or maintaining a system could affected negatively in great extent. This thesis work has looked into a scenario where the tool has been to slow, overly complicated and obsolete. It has made a large negative impact on the work force that uses the tool and made tracking issue to a discouragement. The thesis work has thence investigated features of the existing tool, suggested a better solution to use based upon these findings, followed by the development of a web application. When the application was finished, its usability was tested by the intended staff and performance tests were conducted. The test results showed that the application had been implemented successfully in many aspects. Unfortunately, due to deficient technical choices, the project did struggle with implementing all features as expected. The thesis work did consequently learn the hard way the importance of a choosing development techniques very thoroughly.

Abstract:
A new high-level language is sought after for implementing and mocking functional-ity on the Axis Communications platform. We analyze what impact the Node.js run-time environment has regarding performance and its ability to perform functionality. The performance refers to metrics on CPU, memory, free disk space and responsetimes and what effect an added Node.js runtime has on the platform. The functional-ity is based on Axis’ ideas about having Node.js run high-level services. A test planvalidates the functionality of a JavaScript service implemented as an API with JSONobjects as a POST and GET methods. To test the performance a test suite that sam-ples the data on a device and saves it like log files on a client. The variable is threedifferent stages, where the current device serves as the baseline. Secondly, to findout what impact Node.js itself has the second stage is with Node.js present and thethird stage represents a device where Node.js and the JavaScript service is put underload. The results show that it is possible to implement a JavaScript service runningunder Node.js since the test plan with its assertions passed on all tests. Regardingperformance and response time we did see a decrease in CPU idle time and memoryand an increase in the response time compared to the baseline.

Abstract:
How was the Mubarak regime overcome? Moreover, what role did technology play in social consolidation and mobilization in Egypt? Is this unique to 2011? This paper proposes that in Egypt, ICT socialization—meaning the process where individuals rely on technology to accommodate norms and values with behaviors that help manage one’s identity—enabled a political self-awareness to occur in each cycle of change, from the Kefaya movement to the April 6th movement to the 2011 Revolution, and evolved political activism into a social force capable of organic mobilization. Accordingly, this study examines correlations among the Egyptian Movement for change, better known as Kefaya, the April 6th movement, and the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 in order to locate causality for large movement consolidation and effective political mobilization in Egypt.

Okal, Ahmet, and Ahmet Okal. "Turkish Global Simulation: A Modern Strategy for Teaching Language and Culture Using Web Technologies." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625549.

Full text
Abstract:
In spite of the increased emphasis since being designated by the United States National Security Language Initiative (NSLI) as one of the sixteen critical languages, the number of students studying Turkish at the university level is small (MLA, 2015). During implementation of this project, several problems unique to Turkish arose. According to the Defense Language Institute (DLI), the degree of difficulty for English language speakers to learn Turkish is greater than that of most European languages because of the vast cultural differences between the United States and Turkey. There is one commonly used textbook at the university level across the United States (Öztopçu) which succeeds in delivering the teaching materials suitable for a traditional classroom but fails to provide opportunities for students to develop cultural and communicative competence. Additionally, it fails to offer digital technology, such as online study materials, which many students would prefer to have included in their academic studies (ECAR, 2014). The Turkish Global Simulation (TGS) project offers a solution: the development of effective teaching materials that would provide students access to the Turkish language and culture using the latest technologies that students already use and enjoy. The TGS was based on the French Apartment Building (Dupuy, 2006a, 2006b), which exemplifies relevant task-based instruction. The French Apartment Building project helps students attain communicative competence and cultural literacy through books and web resources, and focuses on improving students' reading and writing skills. The TGS allows students to experience a virtual life as a tenant in an apartment building in Istanbul. This is accomplished with the use of web applications (Facebook, Google Earth, Google Docs, Google Voice, emails, Blogger, chats, text messages, podcasting, audio-video files, 3-D maps, and Google Bookmarks), and authentic materials (e.g. movie/music clips). I delivered the tasks and the materials—in accordance with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards—through the TGS project, which was first piloted and run successfully for several years to teach second-year second-semester university Turkish learners. The project involves a semester-long simulated life in a Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) environment, and promotes cultural and communicative competence while motivating students to be virtually connected to a new culture, autonomous, and lifelong learners. The specific research questions address: 1. How does the TGS project affect student’s cultural competence? 2. How effective is the TGS project as a context for language learning? 3. How do students compare the TGS with more traditional learning methods? How do teachers evaluate the Turkish textbook? 4. How effective is Internet technology in the TGS project? A number of different instruments were used to measure the effectiveness of global simulation in promoting cultural competence: oral interviews, ACTFL standards textbook evaluations, Flashlight surveys, teacher-course evaluations, and the TGS final exams. The results revealed that the success of global simulation in Turkish has clear implications for teaching not only Turkish, but also other less commonly taught languages, for which the classroom is the predominant method for American university students to learn a foreign language and culture.

Abstract:
We have seen only 13 years of human existence into the 21st century thus far, yet the impact and pace of advancements in computing technologieshave never been more rapid and widespread than in the last 10 years. The world has moved from connected to hyper-connected. Between March 2003 and March 2013, the number of internet connected devices has risen 352% from 608 million to 2.749 billion connected devices according to data from the Internet Usage Statistics and International Telecommunication Union. We are moving from use of relatively heavy, static “top” computers (desktops and laptops) to lighter, mobile form factors. As consumer electronics and information technology landscapes dramatically change the way people live, businesses have not been without challenges to respond to the changes or impacted by the shifting landscape; therein also exist massive opportunities. The workplace in large, geographically dispersed corporations has been witnessing intriguing transformations as well. As companies scale in operational size and become more distributed to meet the global market needs with a local approach, management of internal business processes and customer relationships across geographies, using the most reliable and costeffective enterprise-class technology solutions stands critical to driving business goals. Around that need, several recurring themes and trends have emerged within the past decade some of which are: Telecommuting (virtual office), Mobility, and Big Data management.

Van, der Westhuizen Nicolaas Jackie. "The integration of railway condition monitoring technologies to establish continuous track asset management improvement." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26193.

Full text
Abstract:
The view of the author presented in this dissertation is that the integration of modern railway technologies and information technology systems establishes effective maintenance management and ensures continuous asset management improvement. In conjunction with the integration of different technologies is the requirement to implement these technologies and strategies in a systematic process according to a prioritised order of value adding, to improve the required service objectives (Mitchell et al., 2007; Woodhouse, 2001). The dissertation describes the planning of maintenance activities on railway assets. It involves various aspects through the asset management life cycle from asset inventory and condition data acquisitioning methods and the utilization of maintenance history to assist in the work identification, planning and work execution of maintenance activities. The challenge in the railways includes a large geographic area resulting in challenges to minimize maintenance visits and resulting costs. It further provides details on the integration and efficient utilisation of information and presents the value it adds to ensure maintenance effectiveness. The study focuses on methods for data collection and a systematic process for decision-making analysis with the ultimate aim of producing an effective maintenance plan (specifically for mechanised tamping) based on all available infrastructure management data including operational requirements. Lastly the effect of condition-based maintenance is illustrated, demonstrating that this strategy increases maintenance effectiveness (doing the right things), resulting in a decrease in maintenance cost and an increase in capacity.

Liu, Wen. "Design, Characterization and Analysis of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Protection Solutions in Emerging and Modern Technologies." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5404.

Full text
Abstract:
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is a significant hazard to electronic components and systems. Based on a specific processing technology, a given circuit application requires a customized ESD consideration that includes the devices' operating voltage, leakage current, breakdown constraints, and footprint. As new technology nodes mature every 3-5 years, design of effective ESD protection solutions has become more and more challenging due to the narrowed design window, elevated electric field and current density, as well as new failure mechanisms that are not well understood. The endeavor of this research is to develop novel, effective and robust ESD protection solutions for both emerging technologies and modern complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technologies. The Si nanowire field-effect transistors are projected by the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors as promising next-generation CMOS devices due to their superior DC and RF performances, as well as ease of fabrication in existing Silicon processing. Aiming at proposing ESD protection solutions for nanowire based circuits, the dimension parameters, fabrication process, and layout dependency of such devices under Human Body Mode (HBM) ESD stresses are studied experimentally in company with failure analysis revealing the failure mechanism induced by ESD. The findings, including design methodologies, failure mechanism, and technology comparisons should provide practical knowhow of the development of ESD protection schemes for the nanowire based integrated circuits. Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) are the basic elements for the emerging flexible, printable, large-area, and low-cost organic electronic circuits. Although there are plentiful studies focusing on the DC stress induced reliability degradation, the operation mechanism of OTFTs subject to ESD is not yet available in the literature and are urgently needed before the organic technology can be pushed into consumer market. In this work, the ESD operation mechanism of OTFT depending on gate biasing condition and dimension parameters are investigated by extensive characterization and thorough evaluation. The device degradation evolution and failure mechanism under ESD are also investigated by specially designed experiments. In addition to the exploration of ESD protection solutions in emerging technologies, efforts have also been placed in the design and analysis of a major ESD protection device, diode-triggered-silicon-controlled-rectifier (DTSCR), in modern CMOS technology (90nm bulk). On the one hand, a new type DTSCR having bi-directional conduction capability, optimized design window, high HBM robustness and low parasitic capacitance are developed utilizing the combination of a bi-directional silicon-controlled-rectifier and bi-directional diode strings. On the other hand, the HBM and Charged Device Mode (CDM) ESD robustness of DTSCRs using four typical layout topologies are compared and analyzed in terms of trigger voltage, holding voltage, failure current density, turn-on time, and overshoot voltage. The advantages and drawbacks of each layout are summarized and those offering the best overall performance are suggested at the end.

Ridoutt, Paul. "Improving the development and implementation of modern tourism information and communication technologies in the Caribbean." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2008. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/2089/.

Full text
Abstract:
To these developing tourism destinations, the role of technology is becoming more influential, and technological initiatives are sometimes included as part of a tourism development ‘aid package’ by many donors including the European Union (EU), World Bank and UNWTO. The outcomes of such aid projects have often dictated the development pace of individual countries’ tourism industry. Sometimes the outcomes reflect the political and economic priorities and social requirements of the aid donor itself, and may not always meet the prime needs of the beneficiary country as a first requirement. Initial research shows that attempts to develop and implement IT into the developing countries of the Caribbean, as part of a regional aid funded tourism development project, have not been a total success. The reasons for failure may vary from country to country, but this project shows there is a common thread running through the different projects; the human issues. These range from senior management’s understanding of the mportance of technology, through the development, management and allocation of sufficient resources to a national tourism destination, to the use of technology and the empowerment of management and staff to implement the IT strategies. The increasingly extensive use of dynamic IT in global tourism, by a labour force experienced in creative technology, has seen the introduction of new and dynamic technologies and associated operational system and management requirements. These require developing countries to cope with changing skills and organisational requirements that some cannot accomplish. As a result, they must change and adjust to new staff and skills, or the IT Implementation fails, from a technological point of view. Respondents find that managing this dynamic change, even with the benefit of organisational systems and new staff, is a challenging task. From my fieldwork I found that some Directors of Tourism and senior managers feel pressured to choose between two managerial dimensions – rationalism and humanism. Collins and Porras (1994) propose that this is a trap for managers, as they may succumb to the ‘tyranny of the or – managers can be either rationalistic or humanistic. However, I found that experienced senior managers harness what Collins and Porras call the ‘genius of the and’. That is, they are not trapped by this polarity and have both mastered and utilised systems and married this with building a new organisation, retaining and training their key experienced staff to work with new technologies, recruiting new skills as the situation demands. The paradox for the tourism industry is that, with experienced directors of tourism and senior managers being few in number and difficult to recruit, losing them risks damaging the organisational knowledge base and social framework. Ultimately, this damage influences the way in which new technologies are assimilated into the organisation, and how resources, both financial and human, are managed or mismanaged. The key practical message for directors of tourism and senior managers involved in today’s rapidly changing, technology-driven, tourism marketplace is this. It is essential for them to be more aware of the need to develop an organisation and skill base with the resources to assimilate and use the new technology tools. Failure to recognise and practically support this vision will restrict the benefits of implementing tourism technologies, the achievement of business objectives, and the organisation’s chance of competing in the global tourism marketplace. As well as this project report, the full EU-funded CRSTDP Management Information System (MIS) Project Report (Phase 1 – Development and Phase 2 – Implementation) are submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement of Doctor of Professional Studies

Abstract:
The previous Head of Digital at Tate, John Stack, argues that digital transformation and the audience’s increasing expectation of participation are the two major changes during the last ten years (Mitchell 2014). This thesis addresses Tate Modern’s use of digital technologies with focus on how audience interaction and participation is facilitated through the affordances of digital technology. Additionally, this thesis examines how Tate’s digital policies corresponds with Tate Modern’s actual practices, online and onsite, regarding audience participation and interaction.  Discrepancies regarding Tate Modern’s practical approach to audience interaction and participation in relation to its policies were identified. The audience was not genuinely invited to participate through digital technologies during the examined period.  Tate Modern, although being a leader in its field, still has some way to go in its digital development and its approach towards the audience before becoming a truly participatory museum.
