PurposeWith the initial focus on the extreme end of the work conditions continuum where, in the last decade, legislation has been introduced to combat illegal and illegitimate practices, this issue's lead paper provides an overview on key topics of extreme work conditions of modern slavery and accounting. The paper introduces the Special Issue on “Accounting for modern slavery, employees and work conditions in business” and its selected papers.Design/methodology/approachThe method adopted is a wide-ranging literature review exploring the continuum of work conditions and their relationship to accounting, especially extreme exploitation of workers through modern slavery.FindingsEmployment and workplace conditions and practices in business can be viewed as a continuum ranging from the illegal and illegitimate practices of modern slavery, through unethical and often illegal practices such as wages theft, to decent work. Given this continuum, in this Special Issue avenues are identified for accounting research to provide an account of the effectiveness of actions taken to eliminate modern slavery and overcome grey areas of work conditions.Practical implicationsThe paper helps to create an improved understanding of different types of exploitation in work conditions in different industries and the role accounting might play in research and practice.Social implicationsSlavery did not end with abolition in the 19th century. Instead, it changed its forms and continues to harm people in every country in the world especially in certain industries, of which several are discussed and accounting advice proffered. Likewise, as reflected in Special Issue papers, the role of accounting in reducing less extreme forms of poor work conditions is also considered.Originality/valueThe paper provides an overview of different forms and degrees of exploitation in work conditions and identifies the need for and areas of accounting research in this emerging area.

Information literacy as a set of techniques and methods to work with diverse types of information is a necessary condition for s person to exist in the modern world, because it helps to develop personal, professional and educational skills. The concept of information literacy firstly appeared in the United States in the 1970th. It was a response to the development of information society. Up to now the idea has not lost its relevance, due to the intensive growth of information technologies, an increase in information volumes and the emergence of new educational paradigms. Since the 1990th libraries began to actively develop programs and implement methods of increasing information literacy, systematically train users in rational methods of search, analytical and synthetic information processing, extraction, evaluation and transformation, as well as in the grounds of information security. The purpose of this article is to identify current advanced practices of libraries on various training forms to develop users’ information literacy, taking into account the increase in information flows and the emergence of large amounts of misinformation, the expansion of information types, the capabilities of education technologies, including online, library directions of work activities. To get information use was made of the Scopus database (the selection criterion: journal publications from 2015 to 2019 on the topic “information literacy”). The publication analysis has shown that libraries choose various ways and methods to teach information literacy their users: embedding programs in the educational process (academic libraries); through game, interactive forms (public libraries), individual methods of work of subject librarians with readers, as well as online instructions that allow formation of skills for effective search and information processing in any format.

Implication to Theory, Practice and Policy: Nevertheless, the paper does not argue against pay as a whole, but emphasizes that meaningfulness in nonpaid work is often undermined in economic-oriented discourses, theories and practices. While the present analysis recognizes the criticality of imported models in people management at work, it reiterates that work in pre-colonial Africa was life, and life was work and did not exclude management practices. While recognizing the perception of work as modern and economic driven, the paper advocates the intrinsic benefits of work in traditional occupations that are synonymous to lifestyle and their integration into mainstream people management practices. Critical lessons are drawn with implications to human resources policy, theory building with indigenous inputs and contingent practices in both modern and traditional sectors.

AbstractThis essay follows recent work in environmental history to explore the history of recycling in physical sciences in Britain and North America since the seventeenth century. The term ‘recycling’ is here used broadly to refer to a variety of practices that extended the life of material resources for doing science in the early modern period. These included practices associated with maintenance, repair, exchange and the adaptation or reuse of material culture. The essay argues that such practices were common in early modern science, and informed experimental spaces and techniques and the ideas that they generated. The essay considers some of the varied motivations that led to such practices, and concludes by examining the endurance of recycling in science since the end of the eighteenth century, particularly in recent efforts to create sustainable scientific research practices.

The article is devoted to consideration of modern trends and practices of career management, which are implemented by leading domestic and foreign companies for effective development and realization of the career potential of their employees. The authors emphasize that career management is an important component of effective personnel management aimed at continuous professional growth and optimal use of the abilities, knowledge and experience of employees in accordance with the goals of the organization. Among the key trends that lead to the need to implement effective career management practices, the growth of mobility and flexibility of the workforce, the strengthening of the role of continuous training and adaptability, the emphasis on the development of soft skills, increasing the importance of the balance between work and personal life of employees. It is noted that to attract and retain highly professional specialists, leading companies actively use career management practices such as organizational career management (OKM), career coaching, individual career development plans, mentoring and mentoring programs, as well as modern technologies. In particular, OKM has a positive effect on self-perception of employment and reduces professional burnout, career coaching contributes to the disclosure of internal potential and professional improvement, and individual career development plans provide flexibility and personalization of career management approaches. The use of modern technologies, such as cloud computing, allows you to increase the availability and flexibility of career management. The article notes that in domestic business there is a gradual introduction of modern career management practices, but the level of their systematization and efficiency is still lower compared to foreign companies. For the effective implementation of career management, it is necessary to take into account the principles of corporate social responsibility in personnel management, which are grouped on the consistency of the interests of management and employees. This article touches upon the problem of the effectiveness of the educational process, as well as the format of entrance examinations in vocational education, where gamification is a new tool for admission to educational institutions. The author shows in this work that this gaming technology can be successfully applied not only in the field of medicine, business, politics, but also in the field of education. The introduction of gamification contributes to the fact that students assume the role of active players in the educational process. The game system is able to develop students' logical thinking, it can teach them how to plan their own activities and improve the quality of the results they achieve. It is important to remember that gamification cannot completely replace traditional methods of education and admission to higher education. An example of the use of gaming technology in the educational institution "Alabuga Polytechnic" is given, and a sociological survey was conducted among applicants about the knowledge of this technology and the need for its introduction into the educational process. The purpose of the study: to study an example of the use of gamification technology in education in order to consolidate the acquired knowledge of students and attract more applicants to educational institutions.

The goal of this article consists in the analysis of Eastern psychosomatic techniques for determining the possibility of their use in modern psychological practices. The growing interest in the Eastern psychosomatic Buddhist and Taoist practices is observed in the humanities; they are actively implemented in correction of psychological problems that arise among the residents of urban agglomerations. The author demonstrates the interaction between the Russian culture and Eastern civilizations, as well as formulates a thesis on the continuity of cultures of the Eurasian region. The examples of interrelation of the methods of Eastern psychosomatic techniques in the correction of psychological problems of modern individual are described. The article provides the results of empirical study to prove the hypothesis of the possible correlation of psychological problems of an individual by Eastern psychosomatic practices. For acquisition of statistically significant data, the author employs psychosemantic technique, and for verification of the statistical hypothesis &amp;ndash; &amp;chi;2 criterion. The sampling consists of practicing psychologists with over 10 years of experience. In the course of the study, the hypothesis has been proven correct. Practicing psychologists do not have sufficient information for implementing Eastern practices in counseling; however, getting familiar with such practices, consider it promising to synthesize Eastern practices in their work, and indicate psychological effectiveness for solution of the problems of modern individual. Integration of the principles and methods of Eastern practices into psychotherapeutic activity would prompt versatile and comprehensive understanding of the existential problems of personality, as well allow using the acquired knowledge in counseling.

The article analyzes the modern researchers theoretical ideas regarding the concept of professional competencies. The problem of professional competencies formation and development is essential under the current circumstances, as competition among production organizations increases every day. Moreover, employers are interested in highly qualified workers who are ready to achieve effective production results and contribute to the prosperity of companies via the implementation of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The purpose of the article is to analyze the process of formation of professional competencies among employees. In this article, special attention is paid to the analysis of the most important competencies and skills of employees necessary for the full functioning of labor relations in the production process. Also, in this article, the competence-based approach to the implementation of practice-oriented training at the university for the preparation of potential employees, who are able to compete and adapt to the emergence of the latest modern technologies, has been examined and analyzed. The introduction of a competence-based approach into the higher education system is a new step in the training of highly qualified personnel who has not only a set of theoretical knowledge, but is also ready to implement the practical skills to solve various production tasks. An employee, who has received a high-quality higher education, a rich theoretical set of knowledge and practical skills, will apply his / her abilities in his work, demonstrating high efficiency. The article is devoted to the interaction between humans and music in the modern world. The Integral Musical Personality Model is a new approach to the study of the impact of music on human consciousness. In this work, it is proposed to consider music as a tool for self-knowledge, which allows people to better understand themselves, their values, and goals. The personality model is based on the idea that a person is a complex system consisting of different levels of consciousness. Each level is responsible for certain functions and experiences. For example, the cognitive level is responsible for thinking and rational thinking, the value level is responsible for emotions and feelings, and the spiritual level is responsible for higher spiritual experiences. Music can influence these levels of consciousness and activate them. For example, certain musical pieces can activate the cognitive level, promoting creative thinking and problem-solving. Other musical pieces can activate the value level, causing emotional and spiritual experiences. Individual musical collections can help people to better understand themselves, raise their level of consciousness and achieve spiritual growth - this is shown in the form of integral practices that a person can use today. This practice is based on the work of Ken Wilber, who developed a theory of integral consciousness.It has been applied to a variety of settings, including education, therapy, and personal development.It has the potential to be a valuable tool for understanding and using music in our lives.

This study aims to determine the impact of transformational leadership, organizational culture, and work-life balance on the performance of lecturers and teaching staff, as regulated by academic supervision. Using an associative approach, the research sampled one hundred lecturers and utilized questionnaires and observations as research instruments. The findings reveal that academic supervision does not moderate the effect of transformational leadership on performance. However, it can moderate the effect of organizational culture on performance, while it does not moderate the effect of work-life balance on performance. This indicates that academic supervision does not entirely attenuate the impacts of transformational leadership, work-life balance, and organizational culture on the performance of lecturers at various tertiary institutions within LLDIKTI III. The implications of these findings are significant for the management and administration of tertiary institutions. Institutions should recognize that while academic supervision is a valuable tool for enhancing performance, its effectiveness is contingent upon the broader organizational context. Tailoring academic supervision practices to align with the specific cultural dynamics of the institution can maximize its positive impact on performance. Moreover, ensuring that lecturers maintain a healthy work-life balance is crucial for sustaining high performance, independent of supervisory practices.

Abstract:
Background and Aim: Human Resource Management (HRM) is crucial for enhancing the efficiency of academic work in educational institutions. This study focuses on modern HRM practices at Rajabhat University in Bangkok, aiming to identify strategies that contribute to improved academic performance and operational effectiveness. The research specifically investigates teachers’ perceptions of HRM strategies and their impact on academic efficiency. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 237 teachers at Rajabhat University during the 2024 academic year. A stratified random sampling method was employed to ensure a representative selection of participants. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, yielding a reliability value of 0.92. Data analysis included descriptive statistics (percentages, means, and standard deviations) and hypothesis testing using multiple regression analysis, conducted in a systematic, step-by-step manner. Results: Findings indicate that modern HRM practices are perceived positively by teachers, with discipline and maintaining order receiving the highest average ratings. Furthermore, the perceived efficiency of academic work was also rated highly, particularly in the area of learning process development. Hypothesis testing confirmed that modern HRM practices—specifically in areas such as attrition management, recruitment, personnel appointments, planning, and strategic positioning—significantly influence the efficiency of academic work at Rajabhat University, with a statistical significance level of 0.05. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of modern HRM practices in enhancing academic work efficiency at Rajabhat University in Bangkok. The positive perceptions of teachers regarding HRM strategies highlight the necessity for continued investment in human resource development to further elevate academic performance and foster organizational success.

Abstract:
Mindfulness has been applied differently since its emergence in the modern world. This paper sheds light on the recontextualization and simplification of mindfulness and mindfulness-based applications, particularly with the rise of ‘Work from Home’ during and after the COVID19 pandemic. This review contributes to the conversation on and understanding of how mindfulness practices have been infused into day-to-day life and simplified to accommodate the fast-paced modern working life. This paper first reviews the definitions of mindfulness over the years from dictionaries and research papers, then covers the emergence of critiques on the contemporary secular context of mindfulness. Lastly it examines the modern application of mindfulness and how digitalizing the practices has supported in time their expansion during times of crisis. The review concludes that the recontextualization of mindfulness seemed necessary to increase accessibility to its theories and practices, even though it has faced its own share of criticism depending on where and how mindfulness was introduced.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the innovative organization dimensions and the adoption of modern management accounting (MA).Design: A sample of 79 companies, obtained through a survey, was submitted to descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis and logistic regression.Originality: The studies that evaluated the relationship between innovation and management accounting sought to verify how MA practices influenced the innovation capacity of organizations. This work seeks a relationship in another sense, based on the premise that innovations influence the way in which MA is designed.Findings: The results indicate a more intense usage of the traditional second stage MA practices. Regarding to modern MA practices, it has been identified that the innovation dimensions that influence its adoption are people, environment, team work and organizational structure, and these dimensions are those that have a significant relationship with the adoption of these practices, indicating that innovation may be a factor influencing the adoption of modern MA practices.Theoretical contributions: Research on the topic has identified factors that may influence the adoption or diffusion of modern MA practices, such as decentralization and the size of the company. In this regard, it is possible to see that in addition to these factors already identified, innovation, through the dimensions analyzed, may be another factor that influences the adoption of modern MA practices.

Using data from the 30th wave of the “The Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey - Higher School of Economics (RLMS-HSE)”, the involvement of modern parents in raising children is analysed. Involvement practices are presented in the form of a construct that includes: preparing lessons, attending parent-teacher meetings, reading, playing sports, visiting a doctor, spending vacations, creative activities, additional classes in school subjects, and studying information about care and education. The analysis is carried out taking into account three groups of indicators: family (number of children and the presence of other relatives in the family), individual indicators of parents (education, length of time spent at work) and individual indicators of children (gender, age). A fairly high level of parental involvement and significant differences in the indicators of mothers and fathers are shown - the involvement of fathers is rather complementary in nature. Physical activity with children is the only type of practice in which fathers participate almost equally with mothers. The nature of the transformation of practices as the child grows up is analysed. It is noted that if the child’s younger age requires the involvement of at least two adults, then starting from school age, most practices are assigned to only one of them, while vacation is a practice in which parents most often participate jointly. The contribution of other relatives is assessed. It has been shown that the presence of grandparents in the household significantly reduces the workload of mothers. An increase in the number of children in a family has virtually no effect on the level of involvement in general, but it changes the structure of its practices, while the level of involvement of other relatives decreases. The greatest influence on involvement is exerted by the individual indicators of parents, especially education - a mother’s higher education increases the number of hours devoted to children; Most of parental time is spent preparing lessons with children, which in turn affects academic performance. It is noteworthy that the number of hours parents work is positively related to the level of involvement. The conclusion is made about the stability of maternal and vulnerability of paternal involvement.

The article examines the genesis of the volunteer movement since its inception in Russia, the development of volunteerism in tsarist Russia, in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods and, finally, in modern Russia. The unified network of infrastructure to support volunteerism in the subjects of the Russian Federation is the basis for comfortable participation in volunteering by all citizens of our country. Support of volunteerism at the state level has turned it into a dynamic social trend across the country, in which volunteers are becoming an important tool for solving social problems. It is volunteerism that can be called the basis for the development of civil society in modern Russia, aimed at solving social problems by the people united by common interests and goals.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use an inter-disciplinary approach to examine the relevance of F.W. Taylor’s principles to modern shop-floor practices in the context of a manufacturing organization. Design/methodology/approach Standard time study guidelines laid out by the ILO were adopted and random observations made between two operators independently performing an identical operation in the shop-floor premises of a particular factory. Findings It was evident from the study that modern management has developed the science for each element of the operator’s manual work, as postulated and proposed by F.W. Taylor. It was also evident that completion of the operation on time was necessary for the operators but not as important as the total number of jobs performed during the duration of the shift. These empirical findings highlighted the high relevance of F.W. Taylor’s principles to modern shop-floor practices. Research limitations/implications The authors adopted time study observation as the single method to collect real data from real practices but this could be considered as a biased approach. Since the time study observation is a slow, time consuming, and expensive process of obtaining data, the authors restricted the study to only two operators. Further, the study was carried out in a real setting under several assumptions that may limit its wider applications and practical implications. The study findings suggest that measuring the operator’s performance in terms of time consumption and resource utilization is necessary but not sufficient to evaluate and improve his/her productivity because operators evaluate their performance in terms of the total number of jobs completed during the duration of the shift. Therefore, it is suggested that the managers on the modern shop-floor measure the output at the aggregate level for the given input, while developing new work methods as well as devising performance management and reward systems. Originality/value The study has contributed to the body of knowledge by conducting a complete assessment of F.W. Taylor’s first principle from its origin to its application in modern shop-floor practices. Also, the authors empirically examined the relevance of Taylor’s principles to modern shop-floor practices in the context of a manufacturing organization. The study supports the descriptive work of Freeman (1996), who envisaged the relevance of Taylor’s ideas to modern management practices; also, it gives a few directions to test behavioral operations theory in terms of using real operational data to examine an established organization theory (Gino and Pisano, 2008).

In today’s rapidly evolving work environments, effectively addressing employee well-being through strategic working policies and robust Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) practices has become increasingly crucial. Hence, this study explores the impact of working policies and OSH practices on employee well-being, aiming to understand how these factors contribute to job satisfaction, stress reduction, and overall health. Utilizing a cross-sectional survey design, the research involved 200 employees from various sectors in Malaysia, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected via an online survey, which included validated questionnaires to assess working policies, OSH practices, and employee well-being. The analysis, performed using SPSS, employed descriptive and inferential statistics to examine the relationships among these variables. The findings reveal that effective working policies, such as flexible work arrangements, and comprehensive OSH practices directly enhance employee well-being by reducing stress and preventing injuries. Moreover, working policies moderate the relationship between OSH practices and employee well-being, especially in remote and hybrid work settings. Employee well-being also mediates the impact of working policies on organizational productivity, suggesting that healthier employees contribute to better organizational performance. The study highlighting the importance of integrating supportive work environments and safety measures to improve employee outcomes. The implications of these findings are significant for organizations aiming to enhance employee satisfaction and productivity. By prioritizing flexible working policies and comprehensive OSH practices, organizations can foster a more supportive work environment. However, the study’s limitations, including its cross-sectional design and sample size, indicate the need for future research to explore these relationships longitudinally and across diverse contexts. This study contributes valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners committed to optimizing work environments for better employee well-being.

This study uses evidence from central Europe to address open questions about the Consumer and Industrious Revolutions. Did they happen outside the North Atlantic economies? Were they shaped by the “social capital” of traditional institutions? How were they affected by social constraints on women? It finds that people in central Europe did desire to increase market work and consumption. But elites used the social capital of traditional institutions to oppose new work and consumption practices, especially by women, migrants, and the poor. Although they seldom blocked new practices wholly, they delayed them, limited them socially, and increased their costs.

Purpose Modern age witnessed an exponential growth of high performance work practices (HPWPs) at workplace. This phenomenal increase in quest of performance excellence has fascinated both researchers and practitioners. The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual model of HPWPs for insurance companies of India. Design/methodology/approach A structured questionnaire comprising of 35 HPWPs with a five-point rating scale has been used. Model is based on two important paradigm of HR practices – employees’ awareness and perception for HPWPs. Factor analysis is followed by confirmatory factor analysis to build a model of HPWPs for insurance industry in India. Findings Of the 35 practices 17 get reduced to most applicable practices constituting high performance work system (HPWS) for insurance industry. The paper arrives at appropriate model of HPWPs. Research limitations/implications Paper has successfully developed model for insurance companies. Taking clue from findings, insurance practitioners could deal with various HR related challenges in their respective companies. Originality/value The paper uses primary data collected using structured questionnaire to develop HPWS.

The functioning of society and its institutions is manifested in various practices that embody both officially established and a wide variety of socio-cultural norms. The subject of the study of this work includes systems of interactions and relationships in networks of intellectuals, which are formed in the process of habitualization of mechanisms of informal practices in the context of modern social development. The formal normative foundations of modern societies that ensure their stability and development prospects are studied. Guided by the concept of R. Merton, the authors emphasize the recognition of the permissibility of deviations from ideal normative designs. The object of the study is the processes of institutionalization of informal practices in the current conditions of social existence. The specifics of the design of intersubjective interactions between participants in networks of intellectuals in various informal institutions are presented, according to which their elements become generally accepted practice and in fact confirm their importance in the emerging relations, directing the development of modern social systems. The methodological foundations of the research are works on social philosophy, sociology, history and political science. The authors also addressed the methods and principles of the institutional, praxiological, network and system approach, as well as the theory of social interaction. The scientific novelty of the conducted research consists in identifying the ultimate foundations of informal practices, substantiating their heuristic advantages for modern social development in the theoretical and applied aspect, analyzing the regulatory capabilities of intelligent networks in relation to the normative foundations of specific spheres of social existence. The main conclusions drawn by the authors allow us to see that informal practices, including such socio-cultural concepts as activity orientations and attitudes, values and expectations, along with officially fixed and socially approved behavioral patterns, determine the effectiveness of intersubjective interactions and the attraction of additional resources. It is emphasized that in the realities of modern society on a global scale, the spheres of life are regulated by both formal norms and ideas introduced by intellectual networks, which contain informal rules.

This essay provides a historical context to the office interiors, describing its capacity to enchant the sphere of work and to transform the subjectivities of workers. Focusing on Florence Knoll and Robert Propst, American designers who contributed to the modern aesthetic in the postwar, I highlight how the sale of offices conveyed a fantasy of information work. Knoll and Propst had marketed their ideas using showrooms, textiles, seminars, and informational materials. These communicative practices emphasized the sensate quality of information work, which coached workers to recognize and interpret the visual, aural, and tactile quality of work environments. By doing so, it tied sensations of pleasure to the prospect of self-transformation, which provides basis for the modern attachment to beautified workspaces.

This visual essay shows the relationship between urban analysis and the use of archival images. Firstly, the research process for the realization of this work will be explained, in which photography is an important tool to understand the urban morphology and help to complete and document the theoretical part of my master thesis Inhabiting Water, Public Wash-houses of Oporto: an experience of women in modern city (2020) - which is a theoretical-practical work. Secondly, the historical dimension of the public wash-houses construction will be discussed, showing the invisibility of women in urban and public space - and in the history of urbanism. This invisibility has motivated the search for areas related to the experience of women in the modern city (19th and 20th centuries), assuming that wash-houses are an observatory of urban hospitality (Perrot 1997, 160) and also of women’s practices on the territory. We will see that, in the contemporary urban space, the wash-houses are abandoned and form a network of places in the city. These ruins are potential cultural facilities to be brought out of oblivion. The photographic work carried out during the master thesis took shape in an interactive map (https://maphub.net/chldmn/lavoirspublicsporto) that shows a selection of photographs from 1940 - with women in red to identify their presence in the washhouses - and photographs taken during the summer of 2020. The integration of these wash-houses in the Oporto Water Heritage Park, protected by the UNESCO Global Network of Water Museums, is one of the outcomes of this research.

English abstract: In the 1930s and 1940s an all-black team from the segregated rural South dominated American women’s track and field. Representing Tuskegee Institute (Alabama), a renowned historically black college, the female student-athletes captured multiple championship titles and trophies. Their sporting success story culminated in Alice Coachman’s performance at the 1948 Olympic Games when she became the first black woman to win a gold medal. The article decenters and deconstructs this impressive track record. In so doing, sport history is linked to the history of the body and the self. It therefore explores a multilayered regime of embodied work that was designed to regulate black female bodies to engender socially responsible selves. At the same time, it perceives bodily practices as techniques of the self and emphasizes the agency of black sportswomen. Analyzing a particular historical configuration the article shines a light on the nexus of modern sport and embodied subject formation.

This study aims to explore how families understand and organize their work in agriculture in the midst of modern production challenges and changing agricultural practices, specifically in Madura, Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative research methodology with a phenomenological approach. This study analyzes the responses of informants to understand the lived experiences of farming families. Using the theory of symbolic interactionism, this research shows how farmers negotiate their work and family roles through the active construction and prioritization of shared meanings related to togetherness. These principles include a) a simple way of thinking, b) owning a traditional small farm, and c) not being primarily market oriented. Farmers foster a sense of work-related togetherness by forming strong family ties, resulting in a division of labor and wages based on family relationships. In the Madurese context, traditional agricultural practices are not only a means of livelihood, but also an integral part of the family's cultural identity and social structure. The findings of this study underscore the crucial role of shared meanings related to togetherness and family solidarity in sustaining traditional agriculture in the modern era. It also provides insights into the importance of family cohesion as a fundamental element of the resilience of traditional agricultural practices in Madura, Indonesia.

В статье на примере сельского обряда Учук рассмотрена проблема трансформации современных ритуальных практик чувашей в условиях модернизации общества и под влиянием глобализационных процессов современности. Цель исследования — определение характера, форм и причин трансформации обряда, задачи — характеристика процесса трансформации обряда, его локальных проявлений в различных регионах проживания некрещеных чувашей, роли в религиозной жизни сообщества. Методология исследования основана на понимании обряда как социально обусловленного явления, подверженного изменениям вместе с общественными трансформациями. Работа основана на полевых материалах авторов, собранных в 2001–2022 гг. в селениях некрещеных чувашей в Самарской области, Татарстане и Башкортостане. Результаты исследования показали существенную трансформацию (редукцию, фестивизацию, меморизацию) обряда за последнее двадцатилетие вследствие изменения условий его функционирования и религиозного сознания его участников, а сохранение и дальнейшее развитие Учук оказались возможны при условии сохранения смысла обряда как жизненно важного ритуала для его участников. Возрожденный Учук показал свою востребованность в современных условиях, в нем сошлись традиции и новации как взаимопроникающие стороны культуры. Традиции заключены в его вербальном, акциональном, числовом кодах, в пространстве и времени совершения ритуала. Новая традиция — обряд-фестиваль служит одновременно цели консолидации сельского сообщества и его презентации в поликультурной среде. This article examines the transformation of the Chuvash ritual practice of Uchuk — a field prayer, held in the summer during the ripening of the harvest — in the conditions of social modernization and under the influence of globalization. The purpose of the study is to determine the precise nature, forms and reasons for this transformation of the ritual, and to examine its local manifestations in different regions of the unbaptized Chuvash, and the role of the Uchuk ritual in the religious life of the community. The research approaches the ritual as a socially conditioned phenomenon subject to changes caused by social transformations. The work is based on the authors’ field materials collected in 2001–2022 in the villages of unbaptized Chuvash in the Samara region, Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. The results of the study show a significant transformation of the ritual (its reduction, festivalization, memorialzation) over the past twenty years due to changes in the conditions of its functioning and the religious identity of its participants. This period has seen the preservation and further development of Uchuk; its revitalization has turned out to be possible because the meaning of the ritual is significant for its participants. The revived Uchuk has shown its relevance in modern conditions; here traditions and innovations have converged as interpenetrating aspects of culture. Traditions are maintained in their verbal, actional, and numerical codes, and in the space and time of the ritual. The new aspect of Uchuk is as a ritual-festival which serves both the purpose of consolidating the rural community and presenting it in a multicultural environment.

This article is devoted to historization of scientific practices as one of the central points in problem field of modern science studies. The subject of our article is scientific observation as one of the epistemic practices. Historization of scientific observation in modern scientific studies is possible, because of material practices and social relations begin to problematize in the scientific field. Science is no longer characterized only by a propositional order of representations. It is an assemblage of connections and relations between different agents and network of things, people and practices. This network is complexly arranged and branched, but in the same time it is coordinated in a certain optics and it is producing the visual closure to constructed object. This new optics, that makes visible the material and routine practices, puts in a new way the task to understand, how to work with heterogeneous and historically changeable field of practices and different “ways to do science”. There is a rethinking of the self-evident epistemic categories and particularly scientific observation. As an epistemic genre and scientific practice observation begins to take shape relatively late – only in the XVII century, when there is a complication and multiplication of practices of production of the visual images, that are making concrete from abstract and visible from invisible. To historicize scientific observation is to show how it has become a self-evident epistemic category and an integral scientific function. Scientific observation can be historicized as a set of practices that emerged and spread throughout a particular historical period, on the one hand, as practices of production, coordination, presentation and description of observational data. And on the other hand, it can be historicized as practices of production of “scientific self” as instances of observation. This article attempts to show that observation as a practice and as historically varied object of science is characterized, on the one hand, by the production of “that is visible” and, on the other hand, by “scientific self”.

The purpose of this article is to find out the peculiarities of the application of algorithmic methods of the artistic and scientific experiment in modern practices of visual art; to identify the role of algorithmic methods in creating new aesthetics, stylistics, and artistic language through art history analysis of the work of leading groups of contemporary art and design. The research methodology includes generalization, systematization, and comparison, which contribute to the identification of the leading algorithmic methods in modern art and project practices; art description and analysis of experimental art projects were used to identify the role and principles of application of algorithmic methods in the scientific and artistic experiment. The scientific novelty of the study is to determine the typology, possibilities, and prospects for the application of algorithmic methods in conducting artistic and scientific experiments in modern design. The study reveals the varieties of algorithmic methods and, with the help of art history analysis, their role in the creation of &ldquo;new aesthetics&rdquo; and digital images in intersectoral art and design experiments; description of the technology and principles of application of parametrism as a promising stylistic and linguistic direction for the development of visual art and design. Conclusions. Algorithmic methods are actively used in scientific and artistic experimental practices of modern visual art. They create a &ldquo;new aesthetic&rdquo; through a variety of digital images and principles of parametric modelling. Algorithmic methods are based on mathematically generalized and reproducible laws of nature, which determine their application in the practices of biodesign and biomorphism. The review of modern art and design practice shows the growing interest in the new artistic stylistics and the use of algorithmic methods in the experimental creative work, which makes research in this area relevant and promising.

The answer of these questions will determine the significance of the Practices of the Prophet in our era and in the future. The subject of research in this article is the artistic practices of modern Russian Germans, implemented within the framework of the cultural festival “German Sloboda”. It is proved that festival artistic practices belong to the “culture of ethnos” (according to V. G. Babakov’s classification), that is, they are a combination of ethnic and externally introduced components. The latter are the artistic practices of postmodernism, such as performance, happenings, environment and their varieties. The scientific novelty of this work is the consideration of the traditional culture of Russian Germans in the context of artistic forms, methods and techniques of modern times. The objectives of the work include: an analysis of the artistic practices of the cultural festival of Russian Germans “German Sloboda” from the point of view of correlating ethnic content and modern forms of its presentation, as well as the development of the above-mentioned artistic practices in the history of the festival. To achieve the set goals and objectives, a historical-genetic method is used, which allows us to trace the relationship between ethnic traditional and modern innovation in artistic practices, as well as a structural-functional method that demonstrates the artistic practices of modern Russian Germans as an integral part of their spiritual culture. As a result of the analysis of the artistic practices of the cultural festival of Russian Germans “German Sloboda”, a conclusion is made about the culture of modern Russian Germans as a synthesis of the immanent and transcendent, as a combination of following the sociocultural experience of previous generations – traditions – and the desire of the current generation for changes – innovations. The “culture of ethnos” of modern Russian Germans is in the stage of modification and transformation of its forms, creative experimentation, search for an individual-personal beginning with constant reliance on the collective traditional experience of the past. The seven-year history of the cultural festival of Russian Germans “German Sloboda” clearly demonstrates the active use of postmodern artistic practices, in which art leaves traditional spaces (galleries, museums, concert or theater halls) and conquers new spaces that are not necessarily associated with art.

We identified existing applications of ML in colorectal surgery. Additionally, we discuss the benefits, risks, and safety issues. Conclusions: A better, more sustainable, and more efficient method, with useful applications, for ML in surgery is possible if we and data scientists work together to address the drawbacks of the current approach. Potential problems related to patients’ perspectives also need to be resolved. The development of accurate technologies alone will not solve the problem of perceived unreliability from the patients’ end. Confidence can only be developed within society if more research with precise results is carried out.

Traditional forms of education contribute to the acquisition of an information base by students, but do not form the necessary skills for future activities. Therefore, today, attempts are increasingly being made to integrate technologies used in the practical activities of business structures and the public sector into the educational process. These include Agile technology, gamification, the “inverted class”, which principles are flexibility, balanced teamwork, cooperation, initiative, transparency. The indicated approaches and tools are used by the authors of the article in the educational process for future engineers and managers.Analyzing the work of students in the classroom using flexible and gaming technologies, as well as surveys based on class results, the authors draw a number of conclusions. Positive results include the ability to increase motivation to learn through such factors as recognition, self-realization, social connections, curiosity, and others.The use of new approaches and tools in the educational process allows the teacher to design an educational environment that contributes to the formation of universal and personal competencies of students. A prerequisite for a wider and more active use of the considered approaches and tools at the university is the adoption of this concept by the teaching staff and confidence in its effectiveness.

AbstractThis review introduces the broad themes and methods of Maarten Prak's Citizens without Nations and focuses on the author's portrait of actual practices of citizenship in early modern cities of Europe. It highlights the strengths of Prak's study in formidable archival work and broad comparative reading. It points out the central place of practices of poor relief to the building of urban networks of citizenship, drawing out the importance of women in participating in these informal yet critical practices of citizenship. Taking the relationship between provisioning for the poor and community building seriously, and building on Prak's view of Britain's relatively smooth transition from early modern to modern practices of citizenship, the essay speculates on whether England's unusual nationwide poor law (born in the early modern period and exemplifying ideals of citizenship usually associated with “urban republicanism”) played its own critical role in the rise of an integrated nation there.

Virgil Bierbauer is known as perhaps the foremost champion of international modernism in architecture writing in Hungary between the wars. He was editor of the journal Tér és Forma (Space and Form) in the 1920s and 1930, which he used as a platform for disseminating awareness of debates and practices in contemporary architecture not only in Hungary but elsewhere in Europe and North America. Yet his work is almost entirely unknown, primarily because he wrote only in Hungarian. This group of four essays by Bierbauer from Tér és Forma has been translated into English to address this deficit of awareness. The essays are representative of different ideas and positions he took from 1928, the earliest he wrote, to 1946, when the latest of the four was published. The translations are prefaced with an Introduction that puts Bierbauer's work into an historical and intellectual context, as well as outlining some of his key ideas about architecture.
