By the means of a questionnaire survey performed in a Swedish compulsory school, the present work examines the attitudes towards studies in the French, Spanish and German languages amongst pupils in the 7th, 8th and 9th forms. Questions essential to the survey are: what are the pupils’ feelings towards studying languages; how do they choose which language to study; what motivates them to keep studying; what refrains them from further studies? The answers given by the pupils show that the majority enjoys their language studies; that the pupils are deterred from studying when the burden of studies gets too heavy, the lessons become too tedious or the subject too difficult; that the choice of language to a great extent is governed by coincidence, yet that a large number of the pupils do see the advantage of learning another language.

Full textThe survey's results show that assessment is a natural component of learning and language teaching. The informants face both opportunities and challenges in their assessment work in modern languages. They use formative and summative assessment as a complement to one another. The complexity of the language learning process and the unclear knowledge requirements of modern languages in the curriculum mean that some teachers expressed the need to clarify and interpret the assessment matrices so that students can understand what and how they should be assessed. Another aspect that the result reflects is the positive effects of feedback on student learning, although lack of time prevents teachers from being able to assess the four communication skills at all times. Summative and formative assessment as well as implementation of other assessment strategies are needed so that teacher assessment is not a heavy burden.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to analyse the differences in students’ motivations in modern language Spanish between two critical points: when they start reading the language in grade 6 and in their last year of compulsory school in grade 9, from the student’s perspective. The research questions used to achieve this purpose are: (i) what appears to be central in the students’ motivation in their language studies for grades 6 and 9?, (ii) in what ways and in what aspects can one see that motivation differs between the two groups? and (iii) what pedagogical consequences does this difference in motivation lead to for subject didactics of Spanish between the two groups? The study is based on semi-structured interviews to students from grade 6 and 9, aiming to collect information regarding their experience in their Spanish learning, their expectations and goals and what motivates them. Regarding the theoretic frame, this study is grounded on the fields of Self-efficacy, Self-determination theory (SDT) and The ideal multilingual self. The main finding of this study is that students’ motivation changes from grade 6 to grade 9 from resting on an intrinsic motivational basis to resting on an extrinsic motivational basis. From a subject didactics perspective, this result indicates the need for finding strategies and working methods to stimulate students’ inner motivation, and to co-create the student’s L3 self, that is the image the student creates of himself as a Spanish speaker and as a part of a Spanish speaking community.
