Full textReading the project of the Modern and its constructive cultures in relation to the historical conditions and the technology, allows exploring some aspects of Modern Architecture in Europe. Besides the traditional, more studied and known triad of "moderns" materials, steel, concrete and glass, the stone also played an important role, in the definition both of "modern construction and modern style". The construction in stone was always associated with the tradition and then forgotten by the Modern Movement, during the crucial phase of society’s "modernization" and therefore its architecture and construction. The stone however explains this delicate transition from the traditional art of building in stone to the new technologies. The research studies this evolution of construction techniques in stone in France and Italy during the '20s and '30s, related to the new industrialized construction and the avant-garde languages. It begins with the study of technical manuals, the reviews and the projects presented on its pages. The stone cladding, in Italy and France, grows as a model of constructive rationality, where "modern" building techniques slowly converge toward to new solutions. The modern cladding in stone during the '20s '30s has a central role, where the dialogue is possible, without contradiction, between the materials so-called "modern" and the stone. The evolution from traditional techniques to new technological systems determined a new construction in stone that is the basis of modernity and that doesn’t reject this traditional material, but transforms it according to the new aesthetic principles.

Abstract: This work examines the Pedro Nava's Memorias as a late product of the Modernist movement. In this sense, we study the relationship of this text with the Modernism conceived by Mario de Andrade (whose ideas have influenced a lot Nava in the 20s). Subsequently, the analysis aims to demonstrate the peculiarities of Nava's Memorias, highlighting the importance of Symbolist-Decadent movement and the peculiar concept of time proposed in this memorial narrative. In the latter case, the Memorias are compared with other modernist works: late memoirists as Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Murilo Mendes (besides, in another chapter, Oswald de Andrade's poems) illustrate this critical path. In the "Conclusion", this peculiar conception of time is important to understand this memories as late work (according to the ideas of Edward Said in his book On Late Style). This is intended to describe the insular position of Nava's Memorias in the context of Brazilian Modernism

Full textFrom Bauhaus to De Stijl, from Constructivism to the International Style or the Modern Movement, historical modernism has kept more than architecture and design historians busy. In fact, in the last twenty years, it has become a focus of investment in its own right for a large number of artists from all walks of life. At the turn of the century, this phenomenon of references, evocations, displacements, reappropriations, distancing or celebrations took on such a magnitude that many exhibitions in Europe and North America addressed it. However, it was primarily reduced to a ruinist movement, full of nostalgia, which is not discerned by a careful study of the works. Without pretense of being exhaustive, our research has chosen to focus on the works. At the risk of being slightly myopic, where a global consciousness of the historical phenomenon treated might seem lost, we seek to analyze individual practices. The study of the various cases selected leads to different hypotheses and readings, which we hope are novel. If the common thread of all the analyzed works is to refer to modernism, to take it as object through one or other of its achievements, we will see that it is impossible to confer a unitary meaning on such tropism. The indispensable proximity to the works will thus make it possible to take not the exclusive but the plural measures of a phenomenon that will undoubtedly mark the artistic creation of the last decades, and continues to mark it

Full textThe thesis titled “Eduard Maria Balcells Buïgas. A latest-generation modernist architect in the Vallès Occidental region” intends to approach the architect's production and set it in a context from a double perspective, emphasising the relevance he had both from a local and regional aspect in connection with the spreading of modernism and the subsequent architectural movements. The study of his career, his works, and the various typologies and fields he devoted himself to should also allow to define the possible contributions by Balcells, the interest in his production and his role in Catalan architecture. In this respect, the stained glass window is of great importance and the acknowledgement of Balcells as the author of very relevant works is one of the main aims of this thesis. Eduard M. Balcells Buïgas (Barcelona 1877-1965) belongs to the latest generation of modernist architects. He graduated in 1905, and he got selected by competitive examination for the post of Council Architect in Cerdanyola in the same year. He focused his production on the city of Barcelona and the Vallès region, mainly on the towns of Cerdanyola and Sabadell. Balcells witnessed the different early 20th-century architectural trends that were becoming popular in Catalonia. His production may be divided in five periods marked by well distinguished stylistic options: the first modernist period (1905-1910), from the burst into the Central European scene to the emergence of Noucentisme (1910-1919), Noucentisme, Regionalism and Modernity (1920-1936), and Monumentalism and Post-War Eclectic Academicism (1939-1959). Over the modernist period Balcells was characterised by synthesising international models, and the maturity period represents a break with his beginnings and the recovery of local architecture and classicism. The most personal period of his career coincides with the modernist period, and he integrates within the latest generation of that movement. His first years are distinguished by a great deal of originality, a wealth of decorative resources and a certain orientalism. Balcells assimilates the language used by the Catalan architects that preceded him, adding a series of very personal features that characterise his most outstanding production. Some of his most distinguished works are Casa Tosquella, Casa Mestres, Casa Gual and Casa Lluch, most of them within the summer house typology. Balcells's production over the second decade of the 20th century denotes a great influence of Central European models, which leads him to definitely abandon the personal interpretation of Gothic art in order to go in depth into a modernism based on geometric simplification. Over this period, and as a result of his marriage to Eugènia Gorina, he carries out numerous industrial buildings and mausoleums in Sabadell. We may highlight Lawn Tennis del Turó, the set of stain glass pieces of Casa López (current Cerdanyola Art Museum), Casa Carles Balcells, the Sampere Factory, the Sallarés Deu Factory, the Genís i Pont offices, the “La Pureza” Factory, Carol Mausoleum and Rocabruna Castle. Around 1920, Balcells's works experience a great change due to the adoption of classicising proposals from Noucentisme. Balcells opts for a modern classicism over the first years of this period. Besides, between the late 20s and early 30s, the influence of rationalism and art déco is evident in works such as the Rocalla Factory, the Caixa de Sabadell Library project and the Benages apartments. While making the Cattle-breeders Association Pavilion built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition, he joins the recovery of traditional architecture and regionalism. After the Spanish Civil War he shows plenty of examples of an eclectic architecture that looks back in history and is marked by academicism and monumental architecture. By the end of his career, Balcells recommends his son using a classicism that does not go out of fashion, while regretting his youth's most ground-breaking works.

Magma, poetic genesis of the writer João Guimarães Rosa, constitutes the solid foundation of this doctoral thesis in Literary Theory. There have as corps poems that make up the collection, which despite awarded in 1937, did not get the deserved reception, and this, perhaps, hindered the development of researches on / from it, that situated within the context of Brazilian Modernism. Researches that show at the same time, the extent to which collection moves away from that same literary context, since the poems are linked by a discourse that tenses the very idea of Modernism, responsible for ensuring the originality of the work. The in-depth study of the poems shows that primitivism / nationalism, playful, philosophical, lyrical are crucial aspects in its composition. Unsurprisingly link to Rosa's production to Modernism, what is new is to approach an initial work as Magma, in view of the previous aspects. We decided to use an approach that includes (I) the analysis of the critical fortune; (II) the context of production, linking the poetic genesis of João Guimarães Rosa to other modernist poetic productions, especially the first and second times; (III) the analysis of poems. For the construction of the thesis we start from the study of criticism of Magma fortune, especially the study of Maria Célia Leonel (2000), being guided by the receipt of the same and the analyzes of the work they were made. The theoretical and critical support for the realization of this thesis it is adhered to studies of Brazilian modernism, including Affonso Avila, studies aimed at understanding the poetic text as Octavio Paz (1982). In addition, we seek to contextualize Magma in the universe of Brazilian modernism, in order to establish points of approximation and distancing between what is João Guimarães Rosa and what do the Modernists. Then we organized the poems of the work areas: primitivist / nationalist, lyrical, playful and philosophical. The boundaries between the strands are not firmly defined, but we believe that there is an analytical gain in book organization according to this view, because the themes run throughout the collection, too, all the subsequent work of the author. Finally, we investigate to what extent these issues, which are present in the work with little fluid boundaries, articulate, from a modernist discourse approaching them. That is, from the tools provided by the previous steps seek to answer the following question: to what extent modernist aspects are articulated in Magma to ensure dialogue between the identified aspects and to also ensure the originality and richness of work poetic of João Guimarães Rosa?.

Based on postulates of comparative literature, that places itself between the objects analyzed, and new readings of traditional works, so dear to Modernity, this thesis aims at establishing relations between Mario de Andrade's (1893-1945) novel "Amar, verbo intransitivo" (1927), subtitle "Idílio", and works from Teocritus, Gessner and B. de Saint Pierre belonging to the same literary gender, at the same time that considers the questions involving this specific gender. This procedure aims at verifying not only why literary criticism has been so skeptical in relation to the subtitle "Idílio", but also the author's reasons in giving and mantaining it even in the final version of the work. In this way, also the literary gender "Idyll" becomes the object of study of the present thesis, as the works cited above reveal not only an active gender evolving from the Antiquity until the XXth century, but also a gender represented both in poetry and prose, in this case in the novel.

Full textThis thesis aims at updating Plàcid Vidal’s presence (Alcover, 1881- Barcelona, 1938) and revealing the importance of his work within the Catalan literary field, either from the history of literature perspective as well as from the memoirs genre perspective. Plàcid Vidal, being aware of the difficulty in achieving prestige within the literary world, did not stop searching for the right place, he thought, he deserved. That is the reason why in his work he is eager to show some experiences related to the Catalan cultural and intellectual sectors within the period that goes from late XIX century to the first decades of the XX century –until 1934. Vidal, having written poetry, narrative, cultural articles and some drama, wants to get into the literary genre called “literatura del jo” or self literature, which had, at that time, a poor tradition in Catalonia; nevertheless it was the ideal field to carry out his task of rescuing some writers from oblivion, and specially himself, since all of them had to tackle with an intellectual, hegemonic sector that despised them all. Between 1970 and 1980 this author’s revision process was carried out by Josep Iglésies and Centre d’Estudis Alcoverencs, and monitored by the philologist Joan Cavallé. A process which prepared the ground to go on raising the value of his work, a task which involved not only visiting newspaper libraries archives searching for his published texts in both a great number of newspapers and magazines but also consulting the well preserved material at Centre d’Estudis Alcoverencs. However, many documents kept by Vidal –especially mail correspondence– were destroyed by his family after the Spanish Civil War therefore it was necessary to find epistolary documents from other private sources. The interest in the study of the reception of his work has to be remarked, both at the time of its publishing and in later periods –taking into account the way understanding literature has developed and the progressive consolidation of the memoirs genre. This investigation has to favour the reconstruction of the writer’s biography and propose an objective, updated and free-of-prejudice reading of his work, which confirms its historicist and instrumental value.

Abstract: This work intends to unmask the importance of the trips in the life and the workmanship of Mario and Oswald de Andrade in the decade of 1920. Even more, as the trips had revealed to an importante formation and transforming force of the modernism of these two authors ¿ and in fact the paulistano and Brazilian modernism ¿ in the same period and how they had been determinative for the ways of Mario and Oswald in the following decade. These questions are tacked from the delicate event of the contact with the other ¿ understood here, basically, as reevaluation possibility and contact with oneself. The analysis is made from letters changed between Mario de Andrade and Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Manuel Bandeira e Camara Cascudo, and also from articles and interviews of Oswald de Andrade. The depositions of the two modernists are crossed with the workmanship of its authorship conceived in the decada of 1920, everything analyzed to the light of the trips and the attempts of whitewashing of primitive elements undestaken by the modernism

Full textYou can trace back the theory of architecture restoration to Winckelmann: his \"Art History\", published in Dresden in 1764, presents a level of detail in the descriptions and even about the Greek and Roman construction processes, transcending the explicit concern with Art History. His thinking is that the remainings are the documents necessary to tell the evolution of architecture - in between the lines, stays the need for its preservation. However, Ruskin is accepted as the starter of the reflection and theorization. He practiced during his days a preservation without insurance criteria that in his understanding compromised the documentary and historical value of monuments: the ruins were preferable to those works, bringing an obvious and strong component of the current romanticism. In this sense, his thoughts were opposed to Violet-le-Duc who advocated for the theoretical proposal of the the stylistic restoration. Camillo Boito is who actually started the theory that, evolving, is the one accepted today: it formulates criteria and guidelines to think about the restoration process. His ideas are developed by G.Giovanoni, preparing the way for the letters of Athens and finally to Venice, even the restores \"spelling book\". These ideas that have their theoretical formulation more precise and developed in Cesare Brandi, in his \"Theory of Restoration.\" The rapid technological developments of the 20th century - as well as the entry of the Modernism works in the list of assets - made it necessary to extend the application of theoretical concepts to new technologies: - Which principles should guide the restorative interventions in Modern Architecture, when it is focused as cultural heritage? - What are the theoretical positions, which reflections must structure the thoughts before the technical procedures by the architect before the new problems posed by the expansion of the assets universe, encompassing the modernist architecture? In this paper, we try to contribute to these reflections and theories, leading to a method we have deemed necessary before the restoration work approach. While befitting that the works from any period or technology have a priority individuality, there is always a common basis that should be considered and from which the architect procedures evolve. It is for training / formatting of that common ground we want to contribute our experience in two important works of the net assets of Brazilian modernism.

Full textThe research subject of this doctoral thesis was the crisis scenario that involves the development of architecture, urbanism and urban planning in Brazil in the period between the second half of the twentieth century and the early years of Century XXI. This finding originated in the analysis of the contradictions between the goals envisioned by the Brazilian Modern Architecture, a school that would define the course of this production, and its results. One of the main points of its central program was the defense of human emancipation through the transformation of its space. However, its production would express critical limits from the time when the characteristics assumed by the modernization of Brazil, resulting from its way of development at the present stage of capitalism, would make the desired emancipation and would have cities marked by material and social precariousness. The central hypothesis developed in this thesis deals with the relations between the critical nature - to manifest itself as a perennial state of crisis - of the architecture, urbanism and urban planning production in Brazil and the particular forms of the modernization crisis development in the country.

Full textThe aim of this work is to present how translation became a poetics for the American poet Ezra Pound and the Brazilian Poet Haroldo de Campos. Both poets employed translation to expand their understandings about poetry but, at the same time, to create a new approach to the literary phenomenon by bringing together works of authors from many different geographies, epochs and languages. Pound started to write poetry following the rhythm of the Anglo-Saxon and then he took a different direction producing books with comments on his translations like Provençal troubadours and Chinese poetry. He spent almost 25 years translating the entire work of Confucius and after that period he published his last translations of Greek and Egyptian poems. Haroldo was an admirer of Pound and he shared his translation passion. He founded the Avant-garde movement of Concrete Poetry in Brazil and he did collective translations with the members of the movement. His specialization in languages prompted him to translate Avant-garde poetry from many different languages and then he moved to the classics like Dante, Goethe, Homer and the Bible. De Campos benefited from his academic position to obtain specialized advising for his translations. Furthermore, he elaborated a theory on translation following philosophical texts, that he called “transcreation.” He was convinced that the best poetry in all times is essentially Avant-garde

The foundation of Marília / SP goes back to the end of 1920’s decade, being part of one of the last coffee plantation regions of São Paulo State. The growth of the municipality followed the agricultural production and the subsequent industrial implementation, which occurred during the decades of 1940 to 1970, a period of significant economic growth and political ascendancy. Among all the architectural languages we can point to Art Decó, from the middle of the 1930s, announcing next, with prominence, good examples of modernism, which will be the main object of analysis of this work. Among them, a great discovery, the residence of the Avenida Sampaio Vidal, designed by Gregori Warchavchik. The influence of the leading modernist architects, although seen in numerous works and studies in countryside of São Paulo State, was rarely analyzed in the town of Marília, and still less related to its urban development. In this way, this research proposes, as main methodology, to identify, classify and analyze the first modernist projects in the town, through the City Hall Project Archive(APPMM), highlighting the predominant architectural features that compose the modernist ideals and precepts and their relationship with the political preaching of developmentalism. Through these projects analyzed, three distinct phases of the introduction of modernism in the municipality were evident: From 1929 to 1935, with the beginnings of Art Déco to the pioneering project of Warchavchik; the long period of modern absence between 1935 and 1947 and the consolidation of language throughout the 1950s. In addition, the work brings to light the particularities of several modernist projects, known and unpublished by renowned architects, who acted in the municipality.

The years between 1959 and 1962 are considered as Bossa Nova period, an ep-och on which the musical style flourished and settled as a distinctive brand. It is known that the term Bossa Nova was used soon to label the most varied fan of activities, objects and situations. Due to its suggestive strength related to dynamism and novelty, the label BN integrated the imaginary and representations of a time to which Brazil came up as a young country, modern and promising. This research holds such bossanovistic move-ment in its non-musical expression. This way, the weekly magazine O Cruzeiro is used as source of material and object of study in itself, regarding the substantial quantity of references and uses on Bossa Nova term. Several senses referring to the neologism and the function of music polarizing such representations are analyzed hereby. Nevertheless, special attention is given to a peculiar type of graphic design explored by the magazine in 1959 and 1960, named Bossa Nova pages. The issues thus configurated are charac-terized by the geometry, economy of elements and wide use of photomontage. In addi-tion, an interesting mingle among social article, biography, humor, experiment and manifestation for the updating of the graphic form was proposed according to the con-structivists thoughts which were coming out in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro at the time. Such new formats of reports are both analyzed and based upon the history of the illustrative journalism as well as in the interchanges that there have been between the periodical press and fields dedicated to a purer formal research. Eventually, it is demon-strated how some artists, intellectuals and Brazilian reporters situated in the transition between fifties and sixties joined similar ideals of modernity, widespreading them as tools for the construction of mentalities and social representations.

Full textThe reading of the products left by a trip tell us many stories, more than journey details, the way the record was elaborated tell us more about the author, their time, their ideas, their ties. The pursuit for learning an age, its contribuitions for the architecture history, for arts, for the cities, for the perspectives formed in a space of time finds many clues in the trip narratives left by their characters. The travelogues are understood not only as causality, but as moment of forming prospects, of transformation and history invention. The record is not interpreted as an aseptic note não, but in their whole facture, their representatives choices and expressions. Among these trips, the research touches the brazilian experience of modernity and otherness. One trip for many travellers. It was elected the year of 1924, the trip to Minas Gerais, taken by a writer, an intelectual, an painter and an architect, that have a common view which marks the beginning of a research trajectory that has been present in the Blaise Cendrarss, Mário de Andrades, Tarsila do Amarals and and Lucio Costas htrips for many years after these. This common mark begins forming differents views of a same Brazil, propelling either new experiences, repeating the same method, or by the memory way, by the reflexive process, wich is notting but also a trip. Interpret the peculiarities and the formation of a somewhat cohesive group from the four characters participation, through the mediation that each one does about the system: space-recording-experience.

Full textThis thesis investigates the reasons of the dialogue interruption or at least the silence between Brazilian and Portuguese modernist authors. Engaged to a common problematic, the renovation of artistic languages, both Brazilian and Portuguese authors were situated in a shared level to establish a more direct confrontation towards a renewed language that had effects which exceeded the limits of literature. The project developed in Brazil and in Portugal combined the renovation of the artistic language and the modernization of each nation, thus articulating the modernist movement to a modernity proposition. Consequently, the idea of modernity that could emerge of both modernist movements presents a nationalist aspect that is absent in the modernism developed in central Europe. Considering the social specificities in which each one of these movements were inserted, the nationalist aspect is mobilized in the perspective of the multiple Modernities that could be formulated by each one of these modernist projects. Despite the shared problematic that has concerned both movements, the textual solutions found by each one of them were different. The Brazilian case was based on the affirmation of the national autonomy by erasing its past and constituting a structured autonomous literary canon, as if the Brazilian culture had been originated in itself in an autochthonous perspective. In the Portuguese case, authors abdicated the denial of the past as one of the most fundamental aspects of Modernism. It was through past that the image of a modernized Portugal arose. Hence, the incompatibility that prevented the establishment of a proficuous intellectual debate among those authors was originated precisely from these different solutions managed by each one of the movements to compass themselves to other central European vanguards: as part of the past denied by Brazilian modernism, Portugal is considered obsolete and left aside, despite the anteriority of its modernist movement; as a figure that disregards the myth of the Portuguese heroism in exploring and tracing the modern world map, Brazil becomes a less important interlocutor. Thus, this thesis discusses the proximity and distancing of these two movements.

The author José Pereira da Graça Aranha, born in 1868, graduated in Law School by the Escola de Recife and died in 1931. He had his first book - the novel Chanaan - published in 1902; he also had diplomatic duties in Europe and was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, which he later broke apart with; He participated in the Week of Modern Art making an opening speech and published different works in genres and styles. He does however receive little attention by the literary historiography. Beyond the need to fill this gap, this research couldn’t find a richer material for what it proposes: to discuss the diverse formulations of nation present throughout the Brazilian territory during the early twentieth century, marked by the still young Republic and by the discussions around the First World War. In these works, where he deliberately creates or adopts specifics aesthetical choices for certain discourses, three formulations are pronounced in advance: Germanism, Latinity and nationalism. However, among seemingly disparate positions, permanencies are found, such as Aranha's admiration for German literature, for Nietzschean ideas and a concern for universalism. To do so, this research discusses theoretical concepts and perspectives about the cultural production in which Graça Aranha is inserted, questioning a notion of "premodernism" and a recent adoption of "Belle Époque literature", and trying exercises such as that of José Paulo Paes in recognizing an art nouveau in literature. Around those points, the research brings another two important aspects: the use of literature by History and working with a persona/author that leads us to discussions on narratives and therefore languages. Inspired by Mikhail Bakhtin's premise in which form and content are indissociable in the composition of a discourse and the notion of trajectory adopted by Pierre Bourdieu, the present research focuses on "the nation" as a non-unison construct, modified over time but also plural in coexistent discourses, sometimes interbreeding antagonistic, sometimes consonant formulations, and identifying Aranha as not being an exception.

Varney, Jennifer. "H.d. And the translation of classical greek literature." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/80714.
Full textThroughout her career, the American poet H.D. (1886-1961) engaged with classical myth. Despite the numerous translations from Greek tragedy that H.D. produced, very little research has been carried out into this area of the poet’s work. In order to identify the influences and power relations that fed into H.D.’s translations and shaped her activity as translator, this thesis analyses not only the translations that H.D. produced during the early stages of her career (1913-1920), but also the contexts in which these translations were rendered. The driving force behind this study is the desire to interrogate H.D.’s treatment of gender in her translations and the extent to which questions of gender were relevant to her role as translator.

Full textIn common contexts of wars and scientific revolutions, the representations that melt, and sometimes haunt, the imaginary of writers of the Baroque and early twentieth century are similar. Images of an inverted world, where spaces, beings and moments are reflected, where instability and mutability are laws governing everything, the scenes and scenery of the three works of the corpus replace the harmony of the world that of the Creator, as the Bible describes it.Space, characters, lived time appear through a prism that refers to their double, diffracted, reflected first in the machine of involuntary memory. Reality is then changed into realities, places into impressions of an elsewhere, friends in chimeras, all subject to studies and interpretations constantly reevaluated. In a writing where views accumulate and overlap, Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf endlessly prolong the impressions, convolutions, arabesques that constantly differ the conclusion of the story, in favor of the spectacle of sensitive events and hero journeys through the strata of lived time.Characters in motion, Orlando and the Narrator run in search of the flesh of time, which they seem to find in their shadow and in the thrill of a moment, according to ecstatic modalities that Bernini or Caravaggio represented in their art respective.Facts of worlds of appearances, of illusions, Sodom and Gomorrah, The Time found or Orlando are not however texts making the apology of the skepticism and the renunciation of a certain form of essence: it is still necessary that it be brilliant and come into the beauty of an image that reflects the coincidence of an ephemeral vision and a poetic creation offered to the times to come

Full textThis dissertation studies two important authors from portuguese language at modern literature: Mário de Sá Carneiro (portuguese) and João do Rio (brazilian). Both of them have lived the many changes suffered by ocidental society in the end of 19Ћ century and the beggining of the 20Ћ century. At this time the relations between Brazil and Portugal were disturbed, but there were an approach movement between these countries, but Portugal would never let being the birthplace of Brazil, there was no reason to deny the affinities. What seems approach the written of Sá Carneiro and Joao do Rio are the changes, in general scope, suffered in the mentioned time. Both were influenced by tendencies that were originated in the cultural center of that period: France. These tendencies called vanguards, they gave origin to the Modernist Movement in Brazil and Portugal. In Portugal, Mario de Sá Carneiro participated of the creation of this new literary movement with the magazine Orpheu. In Rio de Janeiro, there was a growing modernization at politics, social and cultural life, was the real belle époque of the city, wich Joao do Rio participated, helping the growing of the criticism and journalism in general. We analyze here some tales from Sa Carneiro and some chronicles from Joao do Rio. We find into them lot from the modern crisis lived by them, produce through that corpus approaches between both authors. In this process of comparison, we emphasize some modernists aspects, making troubles with the differences and the similarities, intending to identify the influences and the circumstances that took those writers to written the way they saw and lived the city, the life, the history from their countries as background, presenting wich way these two contemporary characters of cultural artistic life introduced in their papers the presence of the routine, the day by day of the city, and the contradiction with the currents of that period

Full textThe subject of this thesis is Nancy Frasers attempt to overcome the tension between post-modernism and modernism in the feminist political theory, known as the paradigm war. This attempt is analysed though her debate with Judith Butler and Seyla Benhabib about the theoretical consequences of dealing with the problem of exclusion within the feminist movement. Nancy Fraser intends to combine Judith Butlers conception of the subject with Benhabibs conception of equality. For her, this is the only way to integrate power and autonomy in feminist political theory. This discussion leads to three theoretical tensions: contextualization of the subject and autonomy; identity and recognition of difference, and equality and plurality. My conclusion is that this combination is not possible because the post modern subjet challenges any conception of autonomy that is strong enough to explain and motivate social criticsm. Nevertheless, in Benhabibs conception of self narrative, inspired in the reluctant modernism of Hannah Arendt, we can find a theoretical model that is more adequate to fight the exclusion in feminist movement without abandoning its colletive identity.
Sullivan, Kelly Elissa. "Epistolary Modernism." Thesis, Boston College, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:104185.
Full textEpistolary Modernism reads British and Irish writing of the 1920s through the 1950s with a focus on the way authors use fictional letters and verse epistles to communicate a renewed sense of literature as public speech, even as they saw privacy curtailed and surveillance increased. Letters enable late modernist writers to call attention to the way literature straddles the gap between private experience and public declaration. Virginia Woolf, W.H. Auden, Louis MacNeice, Graham Greene and Elizabeth Bowen all use letters to reveal a late modernist belief in literature as an exchange between an author and a reader -- a bridge between times and perspectives -- even as they trouble the possibility of any clear communication or meaning. The implied exchange in letters requires a sense of correspondence: a letter demands both interpretation and a reply. But a letter is always already too late. Epistolary Modernism reads letters as a stand-in for the literary period of late modernism itself, an epoch of writing characterized by a sense of coming too late to history and to literary tradition. The project considers fiction and poetry published in the 1920s through the 1950s in relation to historical and cultural events of the period, arguing that the sense of belatedness and temporal disjuncture letters create fundamentally links the structure and materiality of the text to the social and political concerns of its author. These writers composed literature attuned to historical events and the simultaneously occurring ordinary moment, leading to an increasingly interconnected, and socially-responsible art borne from the historical impasse of the thirties, the Second World War and its political legacy. Letters enable these writers to continue aesthetic experiments while simultaneously addressing politics, society, and the purpose of literature itself

Full textThis research deals with the discussions about the appropriation of the furniture called modern, from 1930 to 1955, from articles and advertising published in the illustrated magazines A Cigarra and O Cruzeiro, and in the architecture magazines Acrópole and A Casa. Using texts and images published by these journals, we have the purpose of presenting aesthetic and functional questions regarding the use of domestic furniture, including their arrangement in the home space. We analyze the social phenomenon of diffusion of modern furniture, bringing up the diversity of appropriations of modernist precepts and the constitution of related notions such as comfort, domesticity and decorative taste.

Abstract: This essay has as the central aim the investigation of the novel Memórias sentimentais de João Miramar, by Oswald de Andrade. We start with the hypothesis that the fictional letters of the protagonist's relatives constitute an important support to the comprehension of the plot. For this, we do, in first place, a brief analysis of the work's structure, and after that, we detain ourselves at the particularities of the letters. We hope to show that João Miramar's relatives carry out an outline criticism to the customs of the society of the XX century.

Full textThe present work deals with the life of the artist Amedeo Clemente Modigliani, an unorthodox Jew, who has always sought artistic and philosophical knowledge and who has launched the quest for Jewish art and mysticism: the Kabbalah. This study reveals how mystical questions are exposed in their works in a barely perceptible way. In order to reach the proposed objectives, a bibliographical and exploratory research was carried out, in search of a theoretical and practical reference for the understanding and elucidation of the facts and the demonstration of how this artist opened up to the world without losing its roots based on the Jewish tradition.

Full textThe central objective of this dissertation is a reading of the novel Orlando: A biography (1928) by Virginia Woolf from an interpretative hypothesis of its construction process. Basically, it seeks to investigate how the selection, organisation and articulation of the social and aesthetic materials involved in its production takes place, in a such a way that it is possible to reconstruct the work\'s key moments as well as to propose interpretative codes. In the first chapter there is an extensive analysis of the formal devices that constitute the narrative; in chapter two it is identified in the novel\'s dialectics of form and content two antagonist ideological formations: the figuration of capitalist patriarchy which organises colective experience in an authoritarian way and the aesthetic of cultural modernisation that rises in opposition to the former. Finally, in the conclusion, all the main points discussed in the previous chapters are summarized and it proposes that Woolf\'s project thematizes the human interiority\'s amplitude in order to create a symbolic compensation for the increasing dehumanization of social life in the interwar period. Thus, we identify two modernist paths: one that places centrality on subjectivization and another on objectivization of the artistic process. This dissertation supposes that Woolf belongs to the first lineage.
